It had been several weeks since the incident in Glasgow. Jack had made sure the kid had gotten most of the sedatives out of his system before leaving, and had since nearly forgotten the whole incident. There had been several incidents in and around Cardiff that had taken his focus. It wasn’t until he started seeing Cam around Cardiff that he began to think something might be amiss.
The first time, it was at a bus station. Just a glimpse, and then the boy was gone. Jack hadn’t even been sure he had really seen him. The second time, he was headed back from a mission and spotted the boy skulking around the plaza. He told himself he was imagining it. But when he turned up on the boardwalk outside of the main access point for the Hub, Jack knew something was up.
He stopped and turned to look directly at the boy, making sure he had Cam’s attention before he asked, “Are you following me?”
“Have you ever had a day where you are at the ATM and you are in a hurry because you’re running late but the person in front of you doesn’t know how to use the ATM and they’re taking forever? Now imagine what it must be like to spend every day surrounded by people who don’t know how to use the ATM.”
