Get In Losers, We’re Going Curse Breaking.

I’ve been doing some research today (I can neither confirm nor deny I’m writing the sequel chapter to Dial Tone) and I just found out that Draco Malfoy’s wife Astoria supposedly dies really young due to a curse placed on her ancestor, which leaves both Scorpius and Malfoy devastated and I’m just…are you fucking kidding me????

Are you telling me that instead of the shitheap of fiction that was The Cursed Child, we could have instead had a story about young Scorpius Malfoy finding out about the curse laid on his mother, and being the Slytherin child that he is, deciding to find a way to break it. 

Like the possibilities, I can’t even, my brain is just…running away with the idea of what you could do with a story like that. Scorpius Malfoy finds out about his mother’s curse, and how his birth shortens her life, I mean…it’s like…there, in the title??? The Cursed Child???!?

And then you have Albus “Al” Potter being sorted into Slytherin but that doesn’t make him any less like his dad so when he finds out what his friend is trying to do he’s there, he’s 100% there to help, whatever his friend needs, Albus Severus Potter is there. His dad gave him the invisibility cloak after all, what’s to stop them using it to get into the Library and reading all the books. They get caught of course, and Professor McGonagall has this surreal moment of not quite déjà vu, at having a Potter and a Malfoy breaking the rules in front of her again, but as friends??? And they’re…they’re reading about healing magic and protection spells at 3am??? Slytherins??? Is…is it too soon to consider early retirement??? Asking for a friend???

And because Al is the precious little Slytherin that he is, he has absolutely no qualms about breaking into his Dad’s office, aka Harry Fucking Potter’s Office, at the ministry and finding out all he can about the most powerful ways to break curses. But first he needs to get there and maybe a few years ago asking his dad if he could come visit on the weekend might not have been weird but it’s weird now. Everything’s been weird since he got sorted into Slytherin but that’s not important now. What is important is he’s pretty sure he remembers a giant book chained to his dad’s office desk and he needs to get to it, but he’s a bit of a squib when it comes to flying, and apparition is still beyond him, but Rose can fly. 

And even though she’s been sorted into Gryfindor and they don’t talk as often as they used to it’s worth a shot right? And initially she calls him mad for wanting to do what he wants to do (just, a moment of pure Hermione shines through, “no, absolutely not, you’re going to get us expelled or worse”) but as she listens to him, the more he pleads adamantly and vocally on behalf of his friend who is just staring at the floor, the more she realizes, they’re serious. Scorpius hasn’t even attempted to flirt with her yet…or…at all really, not recently…and she can’t help but notice he looks a little thinner, a little paler, and the dark circles under his eyes look like bruises, and when he looks up there’s a look of harrowing sorrow behind those bright eyes and Rose Granger-Weasley says slowly, “No, I’m not stealing a broom just so I can fly Albus to the Ministry…” takes a deep breath and licks her lips, determination settling over her shoulders like a well-fitted cloak. “We’re all going. But first we need to get to the Burrow.”

“The Burrow?” Al frowns, doing that weird hopping skip of a run he does to keep up with Rose’s long strides as she turns. “Why are we going to the Burrow?”

“Because, you can fit more in the trunk of a Ford Anglia.”

But no, that’s fine I guess. We’ll just get some muddled bullshit about Bad Parenting, time turners and alternate universes, feat the deranged lovechild of HimWithoutANose and RacistLeStrange. Sure. Great.

Why I Quit German

WARNINGS: This story is really gross and/or horrifying but also hilarious imho.  Your health always comes first, so mind the tags:  Violence, Cannibalism Mention, Suicidal Ideation, Feces, Sleep Deprivation, Airplanes, I generally had a really bad time but now it’s hysterical.  Most of the story is under the cut because it’s eight miles long.


In August of 2009 I flew back to Honolulu to do my sophomore year of college with the intention of entering 400-level german. What happened instead is the closest I’ve ever come to personally dying or actually murdering someone.

The problem started the day before my flight, when I attended a birthday party for a very dear cousin in Denver, and due to be in 1 of 2 adults present, ended up driving a bunch of teenagers home and didn’t get home until 12:30 that night.  Oh well, my flight’s at 6AM anyway, I’ll just stay up. I can sleep on the plane, I thought, like a complete fucking fool.

  • Chainsmokers were the first to ask for a collab with BTS. After BTS accepted they were sent 10 beats right away.

  • The MC said that BTS will probably be in history books to let people know more about South Korea. BTS humbly thanked him.
  • Jhope said the choreography for this album is the hardest they had so far.
  • Suga said all their content get translated fast (in the second) so BTS and himself are amazed whenever tahta happens.

  • Jimin buttoned his shirt and someone texted the station asking “Jimin why did you button up”.  Jimin said it was just too much. Then the host thanked Jimin for doing so and Suga said “but mine is unbuttoned too” (He was wearing a shirt underneath lol)
  • The host asked them what are they majored in high school. Jimin said contemporary dance and the MC said “yeah your face look like contemporary dance). V said dancing and singing.
  • A fan asked that she wanted to hear Tahyung and Jungkook more. The MC asked if they don’t talk much to which Jimin answered "No they talk the most” and JK added, “I don’t know when to come in/get into the convo”.
  • Suga and JK got a cold.
  • The MC said Jimin looks like he was naturally born with blonde hair (it suits him so well)
  • Jimin: we all cried when we first performed at the Olympic Gymnasium. there were chills all throughout our bodies

real talk though

i think the thing with harry potter - why it’s so loved, why it’s so derided, all by people who grew up reading the books - is just that. a lot of the people on sites like this who are reading it and critiquing it and analysing it are people who were kids reading these books, and grew up reading them. (mostly because we’re a large age demographic on these sorts of social media) i know i was four or five when i read them for the first time; i think they might have been the first novels i read independently like that. and i loved them! of course i did, i was four or five, and already an up-and-coming urban fantasy fan. they were full of magic, and kids who were sort of like me, and i loved them.

of course, i’m not four or five now. and neither are any of the people who grew up with the books when they were released. we’re all in our late teens and twenties, and when we look back, we’re looking back with an adult’s critical eye.

because when you’re nine years old, as i was when half-blood prince came out, or eleven, as i was when deathly hallows was released, the idea of harry going into the cave with dumbledore, or snape’s past with lily, don’t seem all that bad. after all, harry’s sixteen, and that’s way old - and snape’s past totally absolves him of any wrongdoing, right? it’s so romantic

and then we got older, and we read that series we’d loved when we’re kids, but we’re older and more critical. we look at it as adults, and see where it’s lacking. how there’s maybe five people of colour in harry’s year, how the only lgbt+ character was revealed to be so outside the books and it was never mentioned inside them, how messed up it is that harry did all this stuff and lived through so much when he was just a kid. even silly stuff - holes in the worldbuilding, little details that make no sense when you look at them twice.

now i’m twenty one and wondering why dumbledore couldn’t have put more adult wizards on harry’s case to help and protect him; why jk rowling imagines a world that seems to be white and straight and cis in its makeup. because i’m older, i understand these things a little more. and i can critique them, because why not? all media is flawed, in some way or other. 

but at the same time, i’m still that four or five year old reading these books for the first time and imagining myself with harry, ron, and hermione. having magical adventures in a land far more interesting than mine.

and i think that’s what i, personally, got from harry potter. it inspired me to write my own stories, the kind of stories i want to see. and on its flaws and failings, i want to build my own worlds, building on the things that annoyed me about the worldbuilding to make my own thing.

and it’s gonna be flawed, too. in different ways. but if i can make one person feel the way i felt, sitting up past my bedtime devouring philosopher’s stone like a starving person at a banquet, it’ll all be worth it.

I'm really interested in learning Japanese but I'm not really sure where to start with it.

It’s amazing how someone can teach themselves a whole new language by themselves. I self-studied Japanese and never used a textbook. There are so many resources for learning, online and free. You can learn just using the online or free resources listed here and beyond. But where do you start?


First, start with hiragana. There are many ways to learn it.

Next understand more about hiragana like long vowel sounds, muddied sounds, The Small や、ゆ、and よ, the small つ、the long vowel sound with Tae Kim.

Then more with katakana. Learn the long vowel sound and the small ア イ ウ エ オ with Tae Kim again.

Then additional sounds using whatever method helped you learn hiragana and katakana.

Done with all that?  Now, drop romaji. It’s dead to you. A little reluctant? Practice more.

Learn grammar next with vocab and kanji on the side. It’s hard to learn grammar without vocab and it’s hard to learn words without understanding some kanji. I know it’s tough but once you ride it out through grammar learning Japanese becomes much smoother and easier. It’s not as frustrating. It’s so fun.

After all that just keep practicing. Go to your best free resource, your public library and find books in your level, watch videos in Japanese, read manga, watch a film in Japanese etc.

Here’s some miscellaneous advice I want to give beforehand I really hope you'll take:

  • Try using the Japanese dictionary the most, not the Japanese-English one but the completely in Japanese definitions of words one. Use Japanese-English when you can’t understand the Japanese definition to help yourself. I found English words given to define Japanese words seem to be similar words or/and words the Japanese word is usually translated in. It’s hard to really understand the word exactly. To really understand the word I find myself having to read the Japanese definitions. This is literally what I give the most credit for my progress in Japanese. ( some good ones are kotobank and goo辞書 as well as the iPhone one.)
  • Learn loan words. Sometimes they aren’t used like the language it originally came from uses it.
  • Understand what radicals are so you use them to look up kanji. Lots of Japanese dictionaries let you look up by radical.
  • Practice stroke order. I mean my handwriting is messy but a least it’s legible and not as messy as it could be.
  • learn Dialects!
  • Some words use a couple different kanjis. Learn the nuances of using those different kanjis in the word.
  • Read news in Japanese
  • learn the culture. It’s impossible to learn Japanese without understanding the culture.
  • learn kanji by learning how its used and vocab. Here’s a post I made about that. It’s the same one above.
  • Change your phone into Japanese.
  • follow Japanese people’s accounts on social media, whether that’s here on Tumblr, Twitter or Instagram.
  • And lastly, Don’t lose yourself to discouragement. Keep going. I can’t tell you how good it felt to watch Jdrama completely in Japanese or read a whole adult novel in Japanese. I could see anyone getting there too. It takes time but it’s very possible.

i just made this announcement over on twitter, but like, let’s be real, i’ve been on this horrible blue hell site since i was 16 - and i’m turning 24 on sunday, so that’s essentially a third of my life, yikes - and you guys are wonderful and i love you and you deserve to hear it here first. so.

as most of you know, i finished my first manuscript earlier this year, and i’ve been reservedly liveblogging the absurdly nerve-wracking process of querying agents and throwing my novel out to the wolves. 

and i’m so happy to finally be able to tell you that i’ve accepted an offer of literary representation from brooks sherman of janklow & nesbit associates.

i first became aware of brooks a couple of years ago when my best friend lena, who was loyally and devotedly beta-reading one of my early drafts, suggested i check out becky albertalli’s “simon vs. the homo sapiens agenda.” she thought simon was an exemplary gay ya romance, exactly the kind of thing i was hoping to do. and she was right: simon instantly became one of my favourite books, and becky became one of my favourite authors. i pledged to myself that when i finally worked up the nerve to start talking to agents, i would talk to the guy who helped make simon happen.

but it took a long time. like, a long time. i started writing “teenage victory song” - the name of my novel, a contemporary gay YA love story, hopefully coming soon to a bookstore near you! - back in 2013. specifically, during an 11:30 PM gchat with grace on wednesday, december 11, 2013, which i have archived for historical preservation. so grace is getting the dedication when this thing goes out, naturally. but, yeah, i started writing it in 2013, and only just finished it this spring, and only with the help of some truly incredible people and loyal friends and family - way too many to name here, but you know who you are, and thank you. i love you. if i hadn’t had your love and your support to battle the little grey cloud of depression and trauma and persistent economic instability that hangs over me 24/7, i’d never have gotten this far. writing this book, and keeping myself mentally healthy and happy enough to finish it, is the hardest thing i’ve ever had to do. 

i also need to thank benjamin alire saenz, andre alexis, dennis bock, anne michaels, and mallory ortberg for reading various permutations of this manuscript and believing in it and giving me their writerly advice on it. i love all y’all. and, of course, major, major thanks to the lambda literary association, who do so much incredible work for so many lgbt authors, and to whom i will be forever in debt.

i just don’t have words for the fact that brooks read my manuscript and said yes, that he said wow, that he believes in me and in what i’m trying to do with my writing. he represents so many authors whose work i’ve been continually blown away by, and it is patently ridiculous and surreal that i get to stand next to them now? i’ve already mentioned becky albertalli, whose work has done so much to humanize young lgbt people and to normalize gay love for a mainstream audience. or adam silvera, who just put queer boys of colour on the new york times bestsellers list with “they both die at the end,” which i am presently reading and crying over and having my internal organs ripped out by. and last, but definitely not fucking least, angie thomas, who wrote “the hate u give,” very possibly the most important young adult novel of the last twenty years, a heartbreaking and compassionate and warmly funny complete and total masterwork that i inhaled in less than two days. like, i really don’t. have words. these are people who have been heroes of mine for so long. i just started actually crying so i’m going to have to wrap this up lmao.

i grew up in an intensely homophobic and conservative christian household, and when i was probably eleven or twelve i somehow came into possession of a copy of “a great and terrible beauty” by libba bray. i don’t remember anything about it except that it had a subplot involving two girls who kissed each other on the mouth, and when they kissed each other on the mouth, i was so viscerally horrified that i started bawling, and i stood up, walked upstairs to the garbage disposal, and tore the book apart with my bare hands. watched the pages filter down into the garbage. and i don’t, like. i don’t like to damage books. i don’t even fold corners because i don’t like to crease the pages. i still remember it all these years later because my first reaction upon recognizing myself in that kiss was to literally destroy it. and i had to keep that part of myself buried for so many years. reading lgbt ya and fanfiction was some of the only escape i had. i wasn’t able to come out until i was eighteen years old, and when i did, it ultimately meant becoming estranged from my mother forever.

i have so much love and tenderness and compassion for all those previous, wounded versions of me, who went through so much, who hated themselves so much, who spent so much of their teens and early twenties being depressed and closeted and suicidal and dreaming of the day when they might get to be an author. you fucking did it, buddy. i love you so much and i am so proud of everything you did to survive and keep creating.

Do you have any advice if someone wants to create an entirely new mythology for their story?

Mythology is a human creation which serves as a way to make sense to the world, surroundings and, mostly, natural events. Mythology tells the story of origins of the world, of people, of elements, and such. My approach to the creation of new mythology will have the geography as the foundation for mythology. The reason for this is that we try to explain, or find a reason, to what we see, hear, or sense. I can not explain, even with a myth, snow if I have never seen it, or heard about it. I can not explain the Aurora Borealis if I don’t know it exists. This might be reductionist since mythology relies on more than meets the eye (aka symbolism, rites, traditions, roles, kinship, among others), but it is a starting point.

Geography
When creating a new mythology you have to know where the story will take place and the conditions of said place. The weather, the animals, the flora, the natural events, and so. How do the people of your story understand and perceive the sunrise, the sunset, the waves, the rivers, the eclipses, the storms. Is there a story behind the shape of the mountains, are the animals a representation of gods and godessess. What about the stars, do they mean something to them? Compile the geography of your setting, use mythology to explain what your characters can see, the vital elements to their survival, and natural events that can happen from time to time. The geography itself can play an important role in the developing of the story, take for example a city surrounded by mountains, the sun rises from the mountains and sets behind them. There are no hurricanes, no tornados, no tsunamis, nothing that can harm the population to a big extent. What role do the mountains play here? Are they protectors of the city? How do the people feel when they travel to a place where there are no mountains? On its counterpart, what about people living on an island, how do they feel about the ocean? What it means to them?

Creation
How did things begin for the people in your story? What’s the beginning of their world. What are the elements arround it? Did a powerful entity created it, was it because of a natural, yet untraceable event. How did the rivers become rivers, who or what created the moon, or is i tan entity on its own?

Life
Is life given or is it created? If so, who, or what, gives it; who, or what, creates it? What is the definition of life to the people of your story? Is the ocean alive? Do the mountains speak to the people who can understand them? Is life a synonym of movement? Is the wind an influx of life? Are living organisms separated into body-mind, body-mind-soul, body-soul?

Destruction
Some natural events can fall into the destruction category, such as volcano eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, among others. For your people, is the creator also a destroyer, or are there other entities besides the creator. Is the destruction seen as something bad or as something natural and even necessary?

Death
Is death the opposite of life? What do the people of your story consider death? Is it given, is it earned? Who can die, who can live forever? Does the sun dies after it sets? What happens to the body after death? Is there an afterlife people can look up to?

Time
Is time linear or circular? How is it measured by the people on your story? Do the days turn into weeks or do they remain days forever? How do people differentiate one season from another? Is there an entity that controls the time, or is it time an entity on its own?

Symbols
Do the entities have a correspondece here on earth, are specific symbols associated to them? Are certain events a warning for something bigger?  Do the people wear objects that resemble the entities they worship? Is there any iconography for these entities?

Prophecies
Are there any prophecies in your mythology? It could be about the end of the world, about the arrival of a different group of people, about a natural event, among others.

Heroes
Mythology also relies on heroes who have accomplished great tasks in order to prove themselves worthy of something. They are usually portrayed as role models for the society, as they embody the values of it.

Rites (also involved in religion)
Are there any rites involved in your mythology? This could be before eating, before hunting, before a birth, or after those above. A rite is usually a sacred act that allows people to go from one state to another within their society.

Traditions (like rites, they respond to a diferent structure)
These are a less sacred form of rites. Traditions carry the past on them as they rememorate an event of importance to society, to a family, ore ven to a single person. A birthday celebration can be labeled as a tradition.

Below you’ll find a list of books written by anthropologists and such, about mythology. Not all of them are explicit about it. Also this books were written by people outside the societies they wrote about, so read them with a critical eye.

  • Pierre Clastres - Chronicle of the Guayaki India
  • Claude Levi-Strauss - Mythologiques / How myths die / Many of his work
  • Mircea Eliade - Many of his work
  • Louis-Vincent Thomas - Anthropologie de la mort
  • Joseph Campbell - Transformations of Myths through time
  • Fernando Santos-Granero - Writing history into the landscape: Space, Myth, and Ritual in Contemporary Amazonia

Advice

  • Define what is sacred and what is profane for the people in your story.
  • The same goes for values and moral expectations. Think of archetypes here.
  • In many cultures, as well as in many mythologies, you can find a universal flood and universal fire myth. This is because both elements have cleansing properties. There can be mythological creatures associated to them or not. As well, these myths can be replicated when someone is born or when someone dies.
  • Mythology is part of the worldbuilding, and it plays an important role in society since it permeates to daily life.
  • As time passes, myths change, or are changed, to keep them alive. At the same time, they can be transformed to fit societal changes.
  • Mythology is not the same as religion. This being said, monoteism is not a higher or more advanced state than animism or polyteism.

Phil loved everything about Dan.

He loved the way he smiled, those dimples caving in on his cheeks, his entire face brightening up as though he was the happiest man alive. Phil had no doubt that, for a while, he was the happiest man alive. He was always grinning whenever Phil was around and then he would look at him with those gorgeous chocolate eyes, ones so soft and filled with fondness that it took Phil’s breath away.

He loved the way Dan had started to wear his hair curly, showing a confidence that didn’t used to be there. But it was there now, shining in a way that made him look like an entirely different person. He held himself taller, spoke loudly, and his hair was wild and so soft that Phil loved to run his hands through it.

“Phil, you’re messing up my hair,” Dan would complain when he did this, but he wouldn’t push Phil away and just let him twirl a curl around his fingers.

It was now Monday morning and Eddie felt his numb fingertips jitter at the seams of his jumper, feeling the weaves under his senseless skin without his pulse guiding him. 

The pills were messing him up. Bad.

His doctor had prescribed the soft pink and white capsules in order to stop being gay, as if what he had was some sick mental illness. Eddie’s mother thought he was twisted, that the rumours weren’t true and that people were lying about her pride and joy. Several days later she realised that Eddie was in fact a homosexual boy. However, she refused to believe it and dragged him to every therapist and doctor in order to ‘save’ him.

He didn’t need saving, he was gay and that was that. He had only told Bill, Ben, Mike and Stan but somehow the word got around school, eventually a teacher had confronted his mother about the matter. He didn’t mean for everyone to know, but now that everyone did- the reaction he got towards his sexuality choice was repulsive.

The Incredibly Moronic Prat Who Lived

Harry frowned when he looked down at the counter and was faced with his own biography, Harry Potter, The Incredibly Heroic Boy Who Lived (Twice!). When he accepted the job at Flourish and Blotts he never considered that he might have to sell books that were written about himself. Harry’s frown turned into a grimace when he realized that the customer buying this book would probably be starstruck when they realized that the one and only Harry Potter was standing on the other side of the counter.

But when Harry looked up to see the customer, he was the one who was starstruck. Because standing in front of him was Draco Malfoy. Unbearably attractive, adorably flustered Draco Malfoy.

“Potter,” Draco said, shocked.

Harry was too busy staring at the blond, memorizing every perfect detail of his face, to respond. He hadn’t seen Draco since his trial two years ago, and the last he heard Draco was in France studying to be a Healer. France has been good for Draco, Harry thought as he admired Draco’s no longer skinny, but fit body. Draco was also silently appreciating Harry’s appearance, but the blond had been taught that it was impolite to stare, so he broke the silence by clearing his throat. Harry’s eyes immediately flew to Draco’s face.

“Malfoy,” Harry said, his voice hoarse. “How have you been?”

“Spectacular as always,” Draco answered dryly. “And you?”

“I’ve been…” Harry searched for a casual way to say completely lost. “Fine.”

Draco nodded. Both boys seemed at a loss for words and Harry looked back down at the book on the counter. The book about him. That Draco was buying, for some reason.

“Draco, you’re zoning out again.” Snape was talking to him about the task he was set by the Dark Lord yet again. Frankly, Draco didn’t care. When he was first told about the task he had been frightened and scared, but now didn’t give a shit about anything.

“I don’t care anymore!” He blurted out. Snape looked taken aback by his sudden outburst. “I’m not going to kill dumbledore and I’m not fixing your bloody cabinet anymore!” He stood up and walked toward the door.

“Draco, you must! The Dark Lord ordered it. He’ll kill you if you don’t.” His voice sounded greatly worried.

“The war will kill me anyway. What’s the point?” He pulled up his sleeve to reveal his Dark Mark. “I got this ruddy mark because that’s what everyone expected me to do. When do I get to have a say in what happens to me?”

“I made the Unbreakable Vow. I promised to help you.”

“That’s not my problem.” He said harshly and walked out of Snape’s office, slamming the door shut as he walked out.

The next day Draco stalked into the Great Hall with bright blue hair. He felt everyone’s gaze on him, but ignored them. Draco plonked himself down and ate a proper meal for the first time in weeks. He quite liked this not caring thing.

Once he had finished, he got up and walk out to head to his first class of the day. He didn’t notice that Harry Potter had been staring at him all throughout breakfast, his eyes wide with shock when he first saw him. He was intrigued and wondered what the sudden change in mood was caused by.

The next time Harry saw him was in Care of Magical Creatures. Draco was walking down the hill and Harry watched him come nearer and nearer until he realised he was walking toward them. He quickly averted his eyes so he didn’t look like he was staring.

“Granger.” Draco called out and Hermione swiveled around, stopping the conversation she was having with Ron, to face Malfoy.

“What do you want.” She said plainly.

“I saw you reading this book earlier.” He held up a book that Harry had seen Hermione read religiously a few days ago. Hermione crossed her arms and waited for him to continue. “I wanted to discuss it with you.” He stated.

Harry could see the conflict in her eyes as she debated whether or not to do so. He knew how much she loved that book, seeing as she never shut up about it. “Why do you want to discuss it with me?”

“Well, you liked it, didn’t you?” Hermione nodded again. “You’re the only person I know who has read it.” He said like it was obvious.

Hermione was silent for a moment. “Alright.” She gave in and jumped into a heated conversation about the book. Harry stared at Malfoy once again and couldn’t help but notice how nice his smiled was.

“Yes! Exactly!” Draco exclaimed when one of the slytherins yelled over to him.

“Hey, Draco! What are you doing talking to the mudblood!”

Draco whipped around and took his wand out of his pocket. He cast a jelly legs jinx at the one who shouted. “It’ll be a lot worse if I hear you saying that word again!”

“Thanks.” Hermione mumbled as Ron laughed so hard he doubled over. Harry found himself smiling as well.

After the lesson had concluded, Draco walked up to Hagrid who was cleaning up dung with Harry helping him as usual. Hagrid looked up when he stopped in front of him. He looked quite confused and probably assumed that Malfoy was going to insult him as he had done in previous years. However, it came as quite the shock when Draco began apologising.

“I was stupid and arrogant and didn’t realise that I wasn’t my father. I’ve always found your lessons quite interesting, if I’m being honest.” He said sincerely.

Hagrid looked like he was on the verge of tears when he brought Draco into a bone crushing hug. Draco laughed. It wasn’t a cruel or evil one. It was genuine and heartfelt.

“Thank you, Malfoy.” He muttered when he let go of Draco.

He smiled up at him. “You’re welcome. Do you need any help cleaning up?” He asked.

Hagrid smiled and handed him a shovel which Draco gracefully accepted. Harry looked at him in disbelief as he started cleaning. When Harry caught his eyes he just shrugged, a small smile playing on his lips.

Harry was sure that Malfoy could no longer shock him after everything that has happened today. Oh how wrong he was.

Him, Hermione, and Ron walked into the Great Hall for dinner and were just about to sit down when Draco walked through the door dramatically and strode up to Harry.

“Mal-”

Before he could finish his sentence, Draco grabbed him by the front of his robes and pulled him into a kiss. The entirety of the Hall went silent and he was sure he heard some people exchanging money. Draco pulled away before he could kiss back, which resulted in Harry pulling Draco into another kiss.

The prophecy has spoken and I’m going to go through a training montage and become really badass really quickly even though I was against being the chosen one in the first place but now I have a black belt after a month of punching bags of sand and now I’m ready to save the world. And guess what. At the end of the book…………. I save the world.”

Taurus: The “you don’t know think you’re beautiful until a boy tells you so / not like the other girls” average looking protagonist~ “Hi. My name is Tookiewisp Flowerspark. I’ve got mousy brown hair and bright brown eyes. I’m tall and thin and I don’t have boobs yet. I love to wear my worn out high top converse and skinny jeans. Maybe if I wore a dress, boys my age would notice me. But to be honest, I’m just not into girly stuff like most other girls are. You could say I’m different.”

Gemini: Crush throughout the entire novel turns out to be an asshole~ “He’d never notice a girl like me. He doesn’t even know my name!’ *sudden makeover transformation where she takes her hair out of a ponytail and takes off her glasses* Boy: ‘Wow, Winteria Snow. I never realized how pretty you were until you put on makeup and put in some contacts. Will you be my girlfriend?’”

Cancer: Instant love~ “That’s when a saw her, walking down the street. She was coming my way. Her hair blew in the wind like a majestic mane of gold. The way she walked made my heart skip a beat. I started sweating and I couldn’t stop my heart from racing. I stared at her as she walked past and I tried to say hello, but my words came out in a jumble. She gave me a weird look and walked away. It was at that moment that I knew I had fallen in love and found my soulmate. Also, by the end of this book she falls in love with me even though I basically obsessively stalk her throughout the entire novel and have no redeeming qualities.”

Leo: The Queen Bee~ “That’s Brooke Richardsworth. She’s the coolest, most popular girl in school. She’s got long, straight blonde hair and wears pink skirts, pink cardigans and pink headbands. Those are her two slightly less attractive friends, Chelsea and Paige. Brooke is also dating my crush. We used to be friends, but ever since I accidentally spilled my chocolate milk on her back in the third grade, she’s done everything she can to make my life miserable.”

Virgo: Problematic parents~ “My parents recently got divorced, so now on the weekends I hang out with my dad, and during the week I hang out with my mom. It gets pretty tiring going back and forth after a while, but every other Saturday my dad (who is also a professor at a university) takes me camping and we roast hotdogs over a campfire which really makes up for it. Recently though, he’s been hanging around a new young blonde woman named Tamara Blake. He’s been spending all of his time with her. We haven’t even gone camping since they met!”

Then on the other hand, there’s Theodore- the quiet sensitive one who reads books and drinks tea and I always catch him watching me from behind a bookshelf in the library! This is the hardest choice I’ve ever had to make in my life. I HAVE to choose one of them. But… who?”

Scorpio: The dystopian society~ “Hi, I’m Bland McBore. In our society, the rich and the poor are divided into two groups and all the rich people are evil and live in a city where there are floating vehicles and all the buildings are white marble and/or chrome, and all the poor people live in mud huts and have to eat bugs and also everything is a weird shade of gray to represent sadness or something. I am going to start a revolution and overthrow the government with the help of my two best friends and once we start to cause trouble with our rebellion, the leader who is probably an old white guy with a pointed beard will offer us riches that we originally fought against in the beginning but don’t worry we will heroically reject them and fight for equality and won’t stop until society is no longer divided. Also people will definitely die but it will all only be people we are conveniently close to. Me and my two best friends get to live until the very end because we move the plot forward.”

Sagittarius: Protagonist just moved to a new school~ “My dad got a new job so we had to move across the country. I’m really shy and quiet and dorky so I know that my first day is going to be horrible. The teacher will make me stand up at the front of the class and then I’ll cry because I’ll be thinking about my life in my old town. Then as I sit back down at my desk, the teacher will keep on teaching instead of addressing that one of her students is visibly upset and crying. Then, the boy behind me will tap on my shoulder and introduce himself- this boy will be the guy I keep as my friend until the end of the novel where, plot twist, he ends up being my perfect match all along.”

Capricorn: The Intellectual~ “My favorite past time is to go to this tree up on a hill where my mom is buried that is also conveniently in the middle of the woods but also within a short walking distance from my house. I go there and I just think. Not of a lot of kids from school do that these days. Everyone is so obsessed with the latest gossip or the latest trend that it seems like everyone forgot how to, well, think. Sometimes I wish I was like them. I wish I could turn off my brain and mindlessly walk around without a care in the world. But I can’t because I’m different and smarter than everyone else and I also like to read and I love the smell of old books and reading and did I mention that I also love to read.”

Aquarius: Really weird “quirky” names~ “Hi, I’m Ingridagelica Applewindbalmkettlefish and this is my story. I know, I know, my name is pretty strange. My parents picked it because they said that when I was born they knew I was going to grow up and do something really great and unique and they also said that it means “not like the other girls” when spoken in Latin.” 

Pisces: The “nice guy” guy friend who turns out to be The One all along~ “I just can’t believe my crush won’t notice me! Tell me Carter, what am I doing wrong?” “Nothing, Skylightquia. If it’s worth anything, I think you’re pretty…. uh, pretty awesome, I mean.” *Skylightquia sighs and looks up at the stars from the rooftop they got onto somefuckinghow* “The stars are really beautiful, aren’t they?” *Carter looks at her meaningfully* “Yeah they are”

Lysandra and Falkan

We aren’t talking enough about these two. And we need to because I don’t know about you but this part:

This part absolutely destroyed me. I was crying for at least ten minutes and had to reread it several times and then had to message someone who had already read the book to make sure he wasn’t going to die or I wouldn’t be able to keep reading. More than anything else in this entire book, I could not handle this moment, for many reasons. 

First of all, I knew from the moment Falkan entered that he was important and would probably be related to Lysandra in some way because she is the only other shapeshifter we know of and thats how books work. Him confirming it though just made me so excited.

Second of all, because of all of this confession, we know that Lysandra has a family. After being abandoned by her father (who we know now definitely knew that she was born) and disowned by her mother and being forced into a brothel, this is so meaningful. And not only does she have a family, but he loves her and wants her and has been searching for her for years.

And Falkan’s line, which he was planning to be the last thing he ever said – and you know he must have been thinking this for years now – “I may have failed her in this life. But not in my death.” That is so freaking powerful and amazing and sacrificial and it truly shatters my heart that he was going to give up the years he’s been searching but he needed to make sure someone found her and gave her what he’s been saving up all these years for them – for them to use together to have a life. And as these words are spoken, as this task is handed off, Falkan knows that he will never meet her, never know her name, never be with his niece who is all he has left.

And then he survives, and Nesryn tells him about Lysandra and:

This part also definitely ended me because he is so happy and relieved and overjoyed to hear that yes, his niece is alive. And he decides to join their cause and come back to the Northern Continent and I cannot wait for their reunion in TOG7, I really don’t think I’ll survive it. 

Side note: Falkan’s last name is Ennar so that means it’s Lysandra Ennar (as long as Lys decides to take her father’s last name which I bet she will) and that makes me really happy because we finally have a last name, yay. 

TL;DR We need to talk about Falkan and Lysandra Ennar more because they are precious and their relationship is going to kill me.

How To Attract What You Desire

Before you begin:

• Know what you want. What you really want. And don’t think of “how” you’ll get it.
• Write the desire in present tense on a card. It is now your goal card.
• Carry this card with you and read it often. This is putting the desire into your subconscious mind.
• Check if your goal is really what you want. Can you imagine bigger? Are you letting fear stop you? Are you answering your soul’s calling with this?

Night:

• How you fall asleep determines what shows up in your life. Everytime. Without fail. So we start our day how we fell asleep the night before, actually. Ask your self one question before you sleep: “If my wishes were fulfilled, how would I feel?” Fall asleep to that question satisfied.
• Record an MP3 or voice note of your OWN voice, reciting positive affirmations. Get examples online but personalize them. Your subconscious mind trusts your own voice. Use it.
• Never ever let yourself fall asleep feeling stress or failure. Don’t invite it in.

Morning:

• When your eyes open, set your intention for the day.
• Did you have any dreams last night? Write them down.
• Write 5 things you’re grateful for. Increase to 10 after a while and begin to include wishes that are yet to manifest e.g. “I’m grateful I now weigh __”

Day:

• Read Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. (PDF’s online) Read slowly and reflectively.
• Read Feeling Is The Secret by Neville Goddard (PDF’s online)
• The Secret book/DVD is great for beginners but you’re going to have to dig deeper to pull this off.
• Do what makes you smile. Read, play your music, call a friend, go for walks. Do whatever you can to lighten your mood.
Write about your desire as if it’s already happened.
Visualize your life ASSUMING the desire has already happened. How do you feel? What are you wearing? Where are you? Was manifesting easy and fun?

Remember:

TOP TIPS FOR YOUR PERSONAL STATEMENT

Hello! I’m about to start uni in a few weeks so I thought now would be a good time to share my top tips for writing a good personal statement. There is no ‘special formula’ for writing a good one but these are some tips I picked up from family, friends, online articles, teachers and universities themselves:

WHAT SHOULD I WRITE ABOUT?

  • you need to say why you want to study that course - how your interest developed, how you’ve pursued it (e.g. extracurricular activities), how you’ve drawn inspiration - basically demonstrate a lot of enthusiasm but be specific
  • give evidence that you’re right for the course - demonstrate with examples that you have researched it, understand what it entails and have the correct skills
  • say what you’ve done outside of the classroom - further reading and opinions (but try to be original - don’t talk about books that are really well-known in your subject)
  • explain why your experiences are relevant to the course and to a future career - reflect on experiences, don’t describe them!
  • give examples of transferable skills - teamwork, time management, problem solving, etc. and then expand on the most relevant skills - success in projects, how you grew from particular experiences, biggest challenges you’ve faced, etc.
  • also show you’re a critical thinker and mention long term plans

AN EXAMPLE:

as an example, here’s what I wrote about in my personal statement:

  • a public lecture I’d been to at a local university and how this inspired me (you could watch a TED talk online and discuss it)
  • how I was interested by the lab equipment and research I’d seen at a university when I went on a taster day
  • hobbies I have and how I was interested in my subject outside of school (books, magazines, podcasts I like and why)
  • a line about my EPQ and how this follows on from a podcast I listened to
  • how I’m finding my A level subjects (e.g. I enjoy science practicals)
  • how my AS levels helped me (e.g. AS history really helped me with essay writing)
  • what I learned from tutoring some GCSE students and volunteering at a charity shop
  • how I found shadowing a PhD student at a local university - how this inspired me and motivated me in my chosen subject

TRY TO INCLUDE:

  • paragraphs and GOOD GRAMMAR!!!!!
  • balance of academic and extra-curricular 
  • evidence you’ve done research
  • show genuine engagement 
  • lateral thinking - link to a more obscure theme that you find interesting 
  • honesty and a desire to study 
  • what you want from course 
  • positivity
  • CURIOSITY! 
  • make it interesting, thoughtful and personal - say what inspires you

DON’T INCLUDE:

  • academic achievements - unis know what qualifications you have and which grades you’re predicted so don’t waste your characters! 
  • quotes - this is YOUR personal statement, not Winston Churchill’s!! 
  • lists - you need detail and explanations 
  • clichés - you have not wanted to be a doctor for as long as you can remember! 
  • sweeping statements 
  • ‘passion’ and other commonly-used words 
  • stilted vocabulary - use language that you actually use (but not slang)
  • exaggeration 
  • humour - it’s a dangerous move to use humour 
  • negativity 
  • irrelevant facts - it’s not a school essay!

OVERALL:

  • show not tell - “I’ve been able to develop my communication skills by tutoring three GCSE science students” is better than saying “I’m a good communicator” 
  • DRAFT!!!! you will not be able to write a good personal statement in one go - it took me months of regular drafting and re-writing to get mine even close to being finished! 
  • get help! ask friends, family, teachers, etc. to read it and give feedback
  • don’t be too precious about it - you will have to cut bits out, shorten sentences, lengthen sentences, delete words, re-arrange the structure, etc. so try to stay open minded!
  • one uni I visited on an open day suggested using the ABC formula: A is for Activity (say what you did), B is for Benefit (say the skills you gained from the activity) and then C is for Course (relate it to the course and say how it prepares you) - I didn’t use this myself but I have friends who found it useful!
  • be specific! don’t say “I love French” - say “I love how learning new languages helps me to understand the world around me….”

little things that can help you if you have bpd (part 2)

  • Learn how to tolerate the distress; Usually, people with BPD suffer from suffocating situations on their daily life, due to mood swings, constant anxiety, dissociation symptoms, etc. If you want to get help with that, self-soothing techquines are commonly used on DBT. Okay, but how can I learn how to self-soothe?
  1. First, control your breath; If you look into the part one, I gave some tips about it, but here are some new things: breathe through your nose for three seconds. Hold your breath for five seconds and let the air out of your nose for three seconds. Take the air out of your diaphragm (stomach region) and not just out of your chest. After controlling your breath, release the tension on your shoulders, slowly rotating them to the back for three/four times. Then, rotate them forward. Repeat as necessary. After all of this, if you can, please take a rest, just close your eyes and lay in your bed or in a comfortable place.
  2. Look for something that distracts you; I talked about having a list about what makes you happy in the part one, so if you could use it for this, that would be great, but if you can’t, that’s okay too, there are other distraction options. Please remember that you need HEALTHY distractions, so please stay away from junk food, drugs, self-harm and others. For some people, it helps to count numbers till 100, but not everyone has patience or can really get distracted when they do it, so here are some activities that may help you: cleaning your house (a suggestion by a lot of therapists to people who suffer from anxiety or depression, it’s not just some “neurotypical useless advice”, it really helps and some studies and people can prove it). Read a book or write something; usually, we get distracted in our daily life by daydreaming about things, so when you actually need to stop paying too much attention to the world around you, it’s great to bring your creative part if you can. Reading a book and writing can help you to create images in your head, you can even write or draw about what is bothering you, so your violent thoughts will be on a paper, not on your actions. (also, there is nothing wrong about having violent thoughts, since you don’t act like them, you can’t control your feelings or your mind and that’s okay). Look at what is around you and challenge yourself to small games; sometimes when I go out, I like to count how many red/blue/green cars I can see, or what combinations I can create with their plates, for example, a plate with letters and numbers: what word can I remember with every letter? or call a friend or someone in your family and try to talk with them, if you think it will distract you.
  3. Accept the reality and your current problem; Even unconsciously, people with BPD tend to escape the reality during a stressful situation, specially by dissociating, that’s okay if you do it sometimes to distract, but doing it often can affect your everyday life. Instead of freaking about a problem, sit down and try to think about it rationally, for example, if your friend is not replying you, you can stop for a moment and think “Okay. They’re not replying right now, but maybe x thing is happening and I can deal with it.”. When you accept the reality, in that case, that your friend is not replying to you, you avoid paranoid thoughts. “Okay, my friend told me to meet them right now, they’re a little bit late. That’s it and it’s okay, I’ll deal with it.”. Encourage yourself by your thoughts telling yourself you will deal with the situation, it will give you more confidence. Also, accept that not everything is perfect, I know that’s VERY hard, because people with BPD tend to overeact to every minor incovinience, but it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Study your current situation and see the negative points, talk to other people about it, research about people that went through the same things. Everything has negative and positive points.
  • Practice mindfullness; There are some videos online, but it’s better if you look for a professional. It makes it easy to develop a wise mind, but you have big problems with dissociation, please research about it, because I’ve seen that it may cause problems.
  • Pay attention to your relationships; People with BPD have a lot of troubles with relationships, which is something that affects our mental health. The fact is that relationships are very important to everyone, since we are social animals and if you pay attention on how you act with people and how they act with you, you can have a better regulation on your emotions. First, identify what are your triggers, for example, self-harm, when someone ignores you, abuse… Tell the other person about it, so they’ll avoid these things. ALWAYS talk about something the other person did that hurt you, don’t keep things to yourself, it’s more likely to create problems if you don’t talk than if you talk. If the person really cares about you, they will cope. In the end, you will have a better knowledge about what makes you happy and what makes you feel bad.
  • Try to find a hobby; I know that is one of the main things someone you will tell if you say you have a disorder, but this is really important, specially for people with BPD and I’ll tell you why. This is something I’ve been discussing with my therapist and the thing is: if you don’t keep your mind busy during a time (not all the time, that’s not healthy) it will create a sensation of void and BPD makes us feel empty sometimes. BPD never let us feel things slightly, so a simply feeling of boredom can become a sensation of completely void. Keeping your mind busy will help you to entertain you and avoid those empty feelings. If you don’t like anything, please try new things, there are a billion of things out there to try.

remember that everything here is theoretical and it’s hard to apply these tips in your life, things will not suddenly change. but i believe in you and things take time, so don’t give up on getting better.
