The Social Construction of Reality
(Peter Berger, Thomas Luckmann, 1966)

“Consciousness is always intentional; it always intends or is directed towards objects.

We can never apprehend some putative substratum of consciousness as such, only consciousness of something or other.

This is so regardless of whether the object of consciousness is experienced as belonging to an external physical world or apprehended as an element of an inward subjective reality.

Whether I (the first person singular, here as in the following illustrations, standing for ordinary self-consciousness in everyday life) am viewing the panorama of New York City or whether I become conscious of an inner anxiety, the processes of consciousness involved are intentional in both instances. (…)

Different objects present themselves to consciousness as constituents of different spheres of reality.

I recognize the fellowmen I must deal with in the course of everyday life as pertaining to a reality quite different from the disembodied figures that appear in my dreams.

The two sets of objects introduce quite different tensions into my consciousness and I am attentive to them in quite different ways.

My consciousness, then, is capable of moving through different spheres of reality. Put differently, I am conscious of the world as consisting of multiple realities.

As I move from one reality to another, I experience the transition as a kind of shock.

This shock is to be understood as caused by the shift in attentiveness that the transition entails. Waking up from a dream illustrates this shift most simply.”

I wish abled people put the same amount of effort and enthusiasm into making sure we have equal access to everything as they put into trying to “cure” us.

They have fundraisers and marathons to raise money for research for finding cures the conditions that may take decades or may never be successfully cured, but not a single activity to fight for accommodations or non-discrimination or accessibility, things that could become realities in a matter of months if the effort was made.

anyone else still sometimes catch themselves thinking about how after all those years of idolizing dave strider and after all that time in the void session wondering and anticipating and nervously awaiting this theoretical possibility that he might get the chance to meet him, dirk finally fucking sits down with dave one on one hours from the final battle and like wow fucking surprise motherfucker

he gets to find out his literal worst fears were ACTUALLY true! the version of him that dave knew actually did, in fact, do his level best to ruin dave’s life and was an abusive, toxic influence from day one and throughout to the point where dave can’t even look at him without flinching!

this coming at a time when dirk is already horrendously low on himself, his relationship with Jake literally just blew up like 3 hours ago and if the AR thing went down even remotely the same way there was also that and holy hell dude what a time to be informed about the existence of Bro Strider. Dirk is sitting there thinking he was a toxic influence to Jake from moment one and probably all of his friends the whole time and here Dave is confirming everything from a parallel perspective?

you can just see this horrible gut clenching moment when this utterly defeated Dirk just meekly accepts that this other version of himself is reflective of his true innermost self and has justifiably ruined any chance he ever had of impressing or even knowing Dave

– and then you see Dave just immediately lift it off him, even get kinda angry at him for having the audacity to even try accepting it that way, you can FEEL Dave’s fucking confusion because he went in guns blazing expecting a confrontation with someone as impossible and inscrutable as Bro was. Dave went in expecting to punch a brick wall and get nowhere, and instead he got Dirk “you’re absolutely right and I’m so fucking sorry I ruined your life” Strider

and from Dirk’s pov, listening to this, watching this, having this realization that this dave isn’t an untouchable, aloof, mysterious and mythical heroic figure of legend at all, but that only makes him MORE worthy of idolization in all the ways that genuinely matter – and simultaneously thinking that he’s already sabotaged himself out of the chance to know him at all.

It’s like, god, you know those hyperrealistic nightmares people have sometimes that are so fucking scary because they’re indistinguishable from real life, the ones where after you wake up it takes a long time for the understanding that it was actually just a dream to hit you and then you want to cry with relief?

For Dirk this had to have been so much like that, the whiplash between being 100% sure that Dave was just going to say what he needed to say and then never speak to him again (and knowing Dirk would have considered it completely justified and never questioned his right to do so jesus christ) followed IMMEDIATELY by Dave just being like no you don’t get it, THIS you, this version of you, what I am looking for deep down in my fucking SOUL is for this you that you are right now to be a person that I can have in my life to tell me that I’m okay, that you’re okay, that WE’RE okay – and after fifteen minutes talking to you I can already immediately tell that you ARE that person.

Dirk’s friends were always only interested in denying the possibility that Dirk could ever truly become a monster, they could never have possibly understood just how DARK Dirk is at his most self destructive, and that’s part of why their reassurances were always hollow for him – they didn’t GET IT, right, they never could have followed the rabbit hole all the way down, so what did they know? But this guy, Dave Strider, has literally seen Dirk at his worst, has lived through the actual reality of the worst things living inside the full-picture potential of Dirk Strider, has dealt with that to great personal detriment and is fucking STILL sitting here telling him “I can tell that you are different, I can tell that you are better, and I am willing to trust you and help you to become a better person than the guy I knew because at the end of the fucking day, you are too important to me to give up on”

like yeah confronting dirk with all of that was what dave needed absolutely but BEING confronted and ultimately forgiven by dave was what dirk needed too, just as much

in conclusion homestuck is good

Ending of Carboys Theory

A saw a comment on youtube mention this and I have been obsessing over it for a while now.

First of all, if you haven’t seen the Carboys latest episode yet. check it out.

But the theory basically goes like this:

The ending we see before the credits and the ending we see after the credits are not the same ending. When they entered the time portal their timeline split in two creating two parallel realities. In the first reality (the one before the credits) Griffon and Nick are separated and spend eternity alone.

In this timeline Nick becomes Busto1.0. He knowingly sacrificed himself to save reality and upon becoming Bust1.0 he goes back to the time before this all to try to warn past Nick and Griffon about the dangers of the blob and prevent this all from happening.

In the very same timeline, Griffon wasn’t given a choice about sacrificing himself. (as learned in the second timeline) and as such never had a chance to say his goodbyes to his loved ones like Nick could. Stricken with this grief and loneliness Griffons chaotic side slowly eats away at him and turns him into Busto2.0.

If you recall to the fan-animation “Car Boys Animated - Some Sort of Digital Heaven” (which was stated by Polygon as being canon) at the end of it you see Busto2.0 opening his arms to welcome and embrace Busto1.0. That's Griffon being reunited with Nick.

Which leaves one finale question. Who or what is “Busto3.0” aka The Blob? Well little is known about the blob, but if following the pattern of how the Bustos are created, then it can be assumed that the Blob’s origins are similar.  For starters lets talk about what we know about the blob. 1) It hates water. 2) its physics are fairly complex. 3) There are people who love it, and more specifically Griffon is one of the people who has to constantly fight against his love for The Blob.

Now then who fits all three of these points AND was brought into the time portal with Nick and Griffon? Ball. Ball would constantly spring out of any water it was put in. Ball has a very similar level of complexity to its physical properties. and Griffon absolutely loves ball. Both of them do. Everyone loves Ball. In fact it was Griffon’s love for Ball that created The Blob. When they were entering the time portal Griffon stated, “I’m scared, can I have Ball? I love ball! ” To which Nick complied and brought Ball (as well as The Blob) into the time portal thus damming them to a repeating cycle.

Ball was dragged into the portal and as a result ended up getting stuck their forever, Griffon didn’t like seeing Ball be trapped in forever and they were forced to leave ball behind. Thus, just like Nick and Griffon, Ball was left all alone for eternity thus forcing Ball to change into The Blob. Who only ever tried to reunite with the boys, but in its changed state, it ended up consuming everything.

After all, the Blob itself wouldn’t hurt the boys and as Griffon said “-if it detects malice… it will activate the protocols ” meaning it only attacked them when they attacked it first.

Now I could be looking into this too much, after all its a video game series about two good soft boys playing a physics based car game. But they did such an amazing job creating a whole story around this series, it only seems fitting we continue to honor it by having these overly complicated theories of our own.

TL;DR

Nick = Busto1.0
Griffon = Busto2.0
Ball = Blob

In your high school and college years, you are going to find someone and you’ll fall in love, deeper than you ever imagined. You are going to feel something you have never felt before and you’ll swear it’s meant to be. But it will end. The heartbreak that you always read about and saw in the movies will become reality. And I am telling you that it will be okay. It’s not the end of the world. You will find someone that loves you for who you are. Yes it will be really hard, but I will leave you with one word.. Patience. Be patient and know that no matter what happens, it will be okay.

yoongi really was desperate to debut

he came into bighit as a rapper- an underground rapper from daegu who only performed for crowds of two and made a couple of cents off of his tracks, which came up to not even be enough to buy ramen.

and when he began training at bighit, he didn’t want to burden his parents either so he paid for everything himself by getting a part time job even though he was a busy trainee/student. sometimes he would have to make the choice between eating that day or not having enough money to pay for the bus fare and being forced to walk two hours to get to where he needed to be. he went to school with wealthy students who would get foreign-made cars for their graduation present and he would have to swallow down his jealousy after seeing them get what they wanted so easily. and he fought with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and compulsion since he was eighteen years old.

yoongi came into bighit thinking that he was going to be in a hip hop group with namjoon and some of the original members of bts, but even though the group concept changed- he still stuck with it because he desperately wanted a chance to be on stage and create his own music. he learned to dance and even acted as a backdancer/mv extra for a little bit despite originally having the intentions of just being a simple rapper and even when he shattered his shoulders from an accident during his part time job as a delivery boy, he still persevered and worked hard to improve himself and prepare for debut.

and the only point where he wanted to truly give up was when he thought that the day of his debut was never going to come. like, this man has been through so many physical/mental difficulties and changes- he literally gripped onto the thought of a chance to be on stage to survive and the only point where he wanted to give up was when he thought that he was never going to get that chance.

I don’t know how to even put this in words and I don’t want to come across as simply using his life story for attention, but yoongi’s life is the ultimate example of hardwork and determination. I have no idea how he was able to handle all of b-free’s demeaning comments so well and I have no idea how people can say that b-free “got it right”.

and just knowing that yoongi still works himself to the bone till this day- working on his music and bringing his equipment wherever he goes ( whether it be during his vacation or on the airplane or in the waiting room) and staying in his studio until the very early morning- and still dealt with battles with his mental health and physical health  after his debut just amazes me because he never lets it show or he never lets it take him aback and somehow we still have the audacity to just label him as “lazy” and “coldhearted”.

yoongi truly is a symbol of persistence and dreams and he really is a role model for me. his lyric “though the beginning may be humble, the end will be prosperous” really did become a reality for him and it only came to him because he never gave up despite all what life threw at him. he motivates me to keep on moving forward in my life and I really do hope that all of you guys see and love him for all that he stands for.

“BAD VIBES FOREVER”
I don’t know what hurts more, losing people or losing myself,

I hear things ya know? and talk to myself, I try not to be crazy, keep my composure and be strong, I am strong, but weak at the same time, if that even makes sense, the mystery behind me isn’t anything cool, or exciting it’s depressing, it’s sad, I’ll always be alone in my mind, with my actions, lies, motives,

I’ll always lose people because I’m at never ending war with myself, I lean on people to save me from myself, when in reality the only way to save me is to kill me,

my depressions comforted me for so long, I’ve to some degree become fond or even used to it, I can’t blame my mom , or the girls who loved me for leaving, in the end all there is, is me, it’s not rewarding or suprising , this character I’ve become , is it even me? is this what I wanted? I’m not sure,

the nightmares, sleepless nights, crazy thoughts, they all play a role, I had someone who could ease it ya know? and I made it my goal to ruin it, literally, she was so good to me, she was my heroin, or “heroine” I broke her, completely, but not only to ruin her, to build her, and she hung on , for so long, for so fucking long,

now I’ve reached a point where I can no longer progress, I’m in a pond with a canoe rather than in the ocean around me in a sailboat,

nothing excites me, nothing will give me joy for to long, only pain and sorrow is what has made me feel or comforted me,

being suicidal dosent exactly help these habits either, I had a drug stage where I would pop pills on pills, just to not feel anything at all, I’d get lost, and than create a motive,

the problem now is that my motives are always surrounded with these evil intentions, I’ve come to think I’m literally a villain at heart,

the thing is , villains are necessary for a story to go about, but, they never find love, or comfort in reasonable motive, just the craziest the things, when im good im sad, when im bad I feel alive, but than I hate myself after,

my insanity has been feeding on me since I could walk, I’d only prayed I’d found someone who figured it out and had the patience to keep me, to disregard the pain and only feed me love, it’s selfish of me, I know, but where are you, angel, my wing ridden angel,

save me – xxx

Actual things that happened in the Kingdom Hearts manga:

• The dusks like to fuck with Roxas as he sleeps. They draw shit on his face and tie up his hair.

• Kairi escapes from jail in the world that never was because Demyx was too lazy to watch over her

• Kairi escapes by communicating with Dusks through wiggling

• Kairi is caught by Demyx, to which she punches him in the face repeatedly. She then proceeds to allow herself to get caught again so Saïx wont kill Demyx.

• Xion and Axel find a stray Pluto and beg to keep him. Saïx allows this.

• Luxord becomes tiny in wonderland and questions reality. He then becomes giant and proceeds to flirt with the queen of hearts.

• Luxord can no longer enter the Castle that Never Was because he’s too huge

• Vexen makes a shit ton of clones of himself, most of which kind of just hang out in Castle Oblivion and harass the Riku clone.

• One of the clones goes back to TWTNW to get revenge against the organization, and ends up killing Xaldin.

• Yen Sid makes a sock for Sora’s Keyblade. It looks like Mickey Mouse.

• Xaldin has an existential crisis about dried fruit.

• Demyx and Xion play Twister

• No one pays attention to Xemnas during his monologueing.

• Xaldin eats a fruit that makes him laugh uncontrollably.

• Xigbar getting a cold is conflict

• Saïx is basically the entire Organization’s babysitter

• Marluxia and Larxene get KFC for lunch

• Sora smushes cotton candy in Seifer’s face

• Vexen, Zexion, and Lexaeus have a chore chart

• Luxord is legitimately upset that he didn’t get a dramatic entrance to reveal himself to Sora

• Marluxia has a cloud of flowers that perpetually floats behind him. The dusks hate him because they have to clean up the petals.

Just to name a few

I think there is some misunderstanding around the AHCA and preexisting conditions.

There is not a specific list of illnesses and whatnot in the bill that’d become declinable or eligible for increased premiums. (for example, there is no mention of sexual assault as a preexisting condition).

what the bill DOES contain is the ability for states to opt-in to changes that would bring us back to the era before the affordable care act/obamacare.

all the info you are seeing on what would be denied or what increased premiums could be is based on the pre-2010 reality in America.

this is important, because I’ve seen a lot of commentary saying things like “it’ll never pass while ____ is listed as a preexisting condition, they’ll have to change it”, and that’s not accurate.

if this bill (or any other that weakens preexisting conditions) passes it’ll be all or nothing.
there is no cherry-picking the things we think should or should not count as a preexisting condition.
anything you tell your doctor will be fair game.

this is why we have to be outraged.

this is why we have to stand firm in our belief that it doesn’t matter how expensive a disease is to treat- it’s a human life at stake, and that human shouldn’t have to pay more because they had the bad luck of needing more than tylenol to stay alive.

we have to defend the gains made by the ACA like our lives depend on it– because they do.

every single american will be at risk if a bill like this passes.
nobody will be safe.

WE CANNOT GO BACK.

my fear is that alex ovechkin will never win a cup and i need this fear not to become a reality because this man has done so much for this team, this sport, etc and is such an amazing person and player and its unfortunate that people try to use the lack of a cup to discredit his accomplishments/ability as a player

some notes on dear chill heathers or whatever it is

Please, don’t let what happened to Hamilton happen to these musicals, most specifically, Dear Evan Hansen. Like many other people, I was able to see myself in all of the DEH characters. I’ve never seen a more accurate depiction of mental illness and the realities that people with mental illnesses face on a daily basis. DEH has become a voice for so many people, a message to keep pushing for just one more day because there are so many people that care. Don’t let Dear Evan Hansen get lost to people who don’t understand how important these messages are. It breaks my heart to see this happen to a show that has been such a light for me in so many dark places. Dear Evan Hansen helped me realize that there are other people who feel the way I do, and that I am not alone. And I don’t want to be forced to abandon this piece of art just because the “cringey” side of tumblr decided to ruin it. So please, learn from superwholock. Don’t let this happen again.

Now Presenting: Brujos

BRUJOS IS A QUEER-OF-COLOR, RADICALLY POLITICIZED WEB SERIES FOLLOWING FOUR GAY LATINO DOCTORAL CANDIDATES–THAT ARE ALSO WITCHES. THEY NAVIGATE MAGIC, SEXUALITY, AND SURVIVING A WITCH-HUNT LED BY A SECRET SOCIETY OF WHITE HETERONORMATIVE MALE DESCENDENTS OF THE FIRST NEW WORLD COLONIZERS.

Installment 1: The Devil

Episode 1: Aries

Episode 2: Taurus

Episode 3: Gemini

Episode 4: Cancer

TV can be art. TV can be revolutionary. TV can be popular entertainment AND incite critical dialogue. Audiences are hungry and intelligent enough for challenging work. This describes the philosophy behind BRUJOS, a counter-hegehmonic web series. Produced by Open TV (beta), conceived, written and directed by Ricardo Gamboa and to be shot by cinematographer Ben Kolak, BRUJOS is a queer-of-color web series.

BRUJOS blends the Latin American soap opera, American sitcom, and critical theory as it follows a coven of four queer Latino doctoral candidates as they learn magic, indulge in nightlife, navigate intimate relationships, and write seminar papers all while trying to survive a witch-hunt. These young protagonists confront histories and realities of racial and gendered inequality as they battle the secret society of white, heteronormative male descendants of the first New World colonizers behind the witch-hunt. Twelve, seven-minute episodes corresponding to signs of the zodiac cycle have been developed through queer men of color testimony; interviews with actual practitioners of divination and magic, i.e. psychics, santeras, tarot readers, etc.; and with academics of cultural studies, performance studies, and queer theory.

BRUJOS addresses the current the landscape of television: Gay men and people of color are more apparent than ever in mainstream television. Sitcoms like “Blackish” and “Fresh Off The Boat” depict families of color attaining the American dream. Programs such as “Looking” and “Modern Family” feature middle and upper class white gay men searching for love or functioning as an all-American family. While these shows are representational achievements, they are not revolutionary ones.

In these cases, ethnic, racial and sexual minorities are portrayed in ways that support dominant culture, narratives, values and relationality. Commercial television studios and networks preoccupied with “scale” and “big data” seldom produce aesthetically or politically challenging work to secure mass viewership. This only further marginalizes non-normative people who’s lives, realities, and stories do not fit within their depictions and who devise new ways of being under the pressures of inequality that are never affirmed.

Moreover, Chicago has become a hotbed for television production. However, series such as Chicago P.D. reiterate stereotypes of people of color as criminals. Mega-hit EMPIRE provides more complex portrayals but it’s get-rich-or-die-trying messaging is consistent with popular culture. Too often work that offers alternative images, narratives, and values is not seen as viable by mainstream producers.

For such reasons, Stephanie Jeter moved from big budget television producing to assume a critical and creative approach to television production. Jeter’s commitment to working with independent artists led her to BRUJOS. BRUJOS was conceived by Ricardo Gamboa, an award-winning “artivist” committed to creating work outside institutional frameworks. Gamboa began development for BRUJOS in 2014 through informal interviews with queer Latino men and healers and psychics.

What the Signs Need to Hear

Aries: That single homework assignment you forgot to turn in? Those tests you just couldn’t seem to pass? You’ll wake up 10 years from now and wonder why you ever even worried in the first place

Taurus: Of course it’s ok to be cheerful, to smile, to pretend that everything’s fine. But it’s also ok to break down, to cry, to feel inadequate because that only reminds us of our humanity

Gemini: It’s ok to compromise, but only do it when you can. If you believe in something, stand by it! Somewhere along the way you’ll discover someone who’s on the same boat

Cancer: Don’t worry so much about finding yourself so quickly, one day you’ll eventually realize who you really are and come to appreciate yourself as much as I do

Leo: Insecurities, no matter how much others try to trivialize them, always affect us in a big way don’t they? But even with all of them, I wouldn’t consider you any less of a person

Virgo: Never settle for what could have been, you’re worth more than second place

Libra: Although it’s ok to listen to others, always know yourself first. What you want to become and what other people want you to become are two completely different realities

Scorpio: If you don’t succeed now, succeed later. Try again. There’s no shame in that, and I believe in you more than you’ll ever care to know

Sagittarius: Don’t feel like there’s too much to do and not enough time to do it. Catch your breath. It may not look it but it’s going to be alright

Capricorn: It’s not always about numbers and deadlines and quantifiable competence. Stripped of these things you still matter, you are valued, and you are loved

Aquarius: Let your ideas flourish, don’t keep it all to yourself. Sure, there will always be people who don’t care, but your voice matters, and anyone who says it doesn’t is dead wrong, make some noise

Pisces: Stop feeling sorry for things that were never your fault, and apologizing for problems that you never caused, the things that you’ve had to go through are not always who you are

Look at your Sun 🌞and Moon 🌑

[Oh! Strong Focus] Growing BTS, Their Movement Itself Is A New Record

The rebellious boys that sang about the unreasonable contradictions in society. Growing from adolescence as they told the fiery story of youth, now they’ve come to show a considerably mature side to them. The story of BTS who is still growing with no end in sight.

Since before their debut, they spoke about the endless reality those in their age group faced. By converting their inner thoughts into music, they garnered response and cheers before their fandom grew substantially.

As they grew from adolescents who sang about “youth” regarding those in their teens, the fandom who’d watched over them and cheered for them grew stronger and formed a connection. “Growth” was the key ingredient.

Now that very growth is becoming a new record.

Released on February 13th, the title track “Spring Day” from the BTS album “WINGS A Supplementary Story: You Never Walk Alone” reached 1st place real-time on all 8 music sites, as well as having multiple of their other tracks rank consecutively on the digital charts. The album sales volume is definitely overwhelming.

It wasn’t long before it went beyond domestic ground. Their title track “Spring Day” also reached 8th place on the iTunes Song Chart in America. The only other time a Korean track has appeared on the American iTunes main song chart was in 2012, with PSY’s “Gangnam Style”, which held 1st place.

Along with “Spring Day”, BTS also showed considerable rankings on the American iTunes chart with “Not Today” ranking 11th, “A Supplementary Story: You Never Alone” ranking 20th, and “Outro: Wings” ranking 30th.

In addition, based on criteria on February 13th at 16:00 (KST), their title track “Spring Day” landed 1st place on the iTunes Top Song Chart in Brunei, Finland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The group landed 1st place in the iTunes Top Album Chart for Armenia, Brunei, Finland, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Their music video has also set a new record. After the music video for “Spring Day” was released under the office BigHit Entertainment channel on Youtube at midnight on February 13th, the video raked up 10,219,692 views within 26 hours and 36 minutes, setting a record upon surpassing 10 million views. This is the fastest record set by a male K-POP idol group.

As of February 14th at 7 P.M., the “Spring Day” music video continues to be 1st place among videos with the most hits after 24 hours.

BTS is showing that they are continuing to develop as they tell these daunting and heavy stories. Although they’re still currently focusing on “youth”, they will surely grow further in both physical and mental aspects to talk about even more diverse materials and subjects. One can wonder how far their “growth” will go.

Sell the raven cycle to me. Why should i read it? What's so good about it?

man that’s a tall order lemme do my best here

1. The characters are very difficult jigsaw puzzle people. They’re wedged in the middle of adulthood and childhood, and magical realism is sprinkled over top of that awkwardness so that we feel very situated in that exact space and time of lost & messing up & family not being enough anymore/friendship being all you can see. And it’s not just the main characters, it’s a spectrum of cameos from people so vivid that you could hitch a ride to a whole other series on their backs. It’s this mass of interconnected lovers and churchgoers and rich boys and school-haters and hard-asses and scared kids and witches and characters that don’t quite know whether to be alive or dead.

Every person is lovingly invented to be difficult to parse upon first glance. they’re magic-eye people. You know when you’re at the optometrist and they put down slides on their big ol’ eye contraption and ask you to tell them when things get clear? it’s kind of like that. You’ve gotta keep accumulating lenses and when it’s finally clear you realize you don’t know where or how the difference set in. And better yet, the characters feel that way too – you’ve got unreliable points of view from everyone from villains to leads to sentient forests, figuring each other out, growing and misunderstanding and loving from afar. Everything has a voice, even birds and trees. This book is made of too many voices in too many languages and all you can do is sit down and be very still and listen (jot that down)

2. The plot/magic in this book are compelling as all hell, and they wind and trip and fall, but it’s worth climbing in and letting the car speed so your head rattles or the magical forest turn you around until you get lost. It’s just the right balance of relatable teenaged disasters and wholly un-relatable living nightmares and hitmen and possession via nature and ghosts and old old old magicians. Somehow pizza with the gang transmutes quietly into burying the carcass of a monster, tennis during the day becomes deadly streaking car racing until someone wins or dies. The books never let up, they go and go and talk about how much they’re going and throw too much at you.

It’s frustrating actually, the way you’re breathless for four entire novels. There are so many loose ends that you start writing ways to tie them together in your head before you’ve even finished. Impossible things represent gritty reality at every turn, you have manifestations of real depression, escapism from real abuse, resentment of real neglectful parents. You have a mosaic of things that hurt so much that they’ve become magic so that we can stand to look at them. trc wants you to look at a kissing curse and a dead king and quietly put them aside until you need them again. If you only read the back of the book, you’re brushing fingers against a scapegoat for a host of things that are much realer.

3. The writing knows what it’s doing. It needles its way into pretentious territory, but I can’t pretend that trc didn’t burrow into my writing style and rearrange things. The writing feels like.. i don’t know man like you’re holding a beating heart in your hand and watching it sputter and try to keep going, and it’s fucking amazing to witness even though you know it can’t last forever. You can see the mechanism of it and gore of it, but you keep watching and waiting. There are so many plain little to the point sentences that fit into the grand scheme of things so perfectly that you just. sob. and there are so many intricate metaphors and frank magical descriptions and charming, human ways of saying something that isn’t charming or human.

It’s a hell of a series. It knows when to open the door, it trusts that you’ll come through it. It makes you hurt so bad for a friendship that hurtles down like an asteroid and ruins everything but you. It makes you feel a little better about whatever ancient welsh king you’re looking for, whatever night horror is ripping up your head space. It makes you dog-ear every other page because the dialogue is so unnecessarily clever and the descriptions sit right in your throat where you almost choke on them.

It’s not perfect. But it singlehandedly made me start reading again (heart in mouth 4 am reading, buying the ebook the second it comes out reading, crying at lines that shouldn’t be cried at reading), what put things in motion for me to make a funny little book blog called ravenvsfox

I can’t promise that you’ll like it, but I think the mess is beautiful & youthful and there are miles of slack to make it whatever you’d like. I hope you pick The Raven Boys up and see where they drive you in their stupid orange car.

Do you think it would help mental illness become more accepted if there were more media (books, shows, etc) showing it as a normal and not negative thing?

YES YES YES. A thousand times yes. Because this is the reality: it is a normal thing. 42.5 million Americans experience mental illness in a given year. That’s one in 5. It is four times more common than all cancers combined; it is twice as common as heart disease. And yet, while we’d never feel strange talking to people we love about those health problems, we feel so vulnerable talking about these ones.

Personally, I take so much comfort from reading/hearing/watching the experiences of others. Because even though my brain wants to tell me that it’s just me, that no one else is like this and I shouldn’t even bother getting out of bed … well, I can know that not only is it so common, but many of my favorite authors and comedians are right there with me.

A few faves: Lady Dynamite and pretty much anything from Maria Bamford, Hyperbole and a Half from Allie Brosh, Blackout from Sarah Heppola, A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki, and I CANNOT RECOMMEND THE HILARIOUS WORLD OF DEPRESSION PODCAST HIGHLY ENOUGH!
