if this is true then everything good is a lie

“…tell me, do not you think me very ugly?”
“That is true,” said Beauty, “for I cannot tell a lie, but I believe you are very good natured.”

“So I am,” said the monster, “but then, besides my ugliness, I have no sense; I know very well, that I am a poor, silly, stupid creature.”

“‘Tis no sign of folly to think so,” replied Beauty, “for never did fool know this, or had so humble a conceit of his own understanding.”

“Eat then, Beauty,” said the monster, “and endeavor to amuse yourself in your palace, for everything here is yours, and I should be very uneasy, if you were not happy.”

—  Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, Beauty and the Beast

Now that the OVA is translated, I still think it’s awesome!!!!

Komaeda’s feelings make me feel so sad, like…

Were there no talent, everyone would be able to lead modest lives… find a modest amount of happiness…

He’s saying that everything would be better if there were no talent, and he said this a few times…

So, in fact, he really despises talent.

Even so…

Thank goodness. I can’t believe I actually said I wanted a world without any talent if it meant everyone could find happiness. That’s just not who I am.

He denies being his true self during the dream and I felt kind of disappointed because… Komaeda… You can’t lie to us!

And then…

That world, and the people inhabiting it, were a reflection of your own desires.

This also means that everything that happened were reflections of things he wanted, even he wasn’t aware of that. So…

There’re a lot of things to analyse here.

“Você diz que me ama, mas realmente sou eu quem você ama?”

“Please know my true heart, my true feelings. Believe that it’s not a lie.”

“숨 죽여서 지켜볼 수 밖에 난 [I can only watch you while holding my breath]”

heroes and the morality of lies

I wrote this in response to a Karamel blogger who directed their post at people they think are haters probably to stir us up..  But I thought I’d post it on its own.

I think Cat made a speech in s1 where she explained that Kara is a hero and an icon, so she doesn’t get to be human and fail.  That wasn’t true of say Greek heroes.  They were just powerful and worthy of stories.  They weren’t benevolent.  But it’s true of modern heroes.  These heroes are archetypes situated in a battle between good and evil, and they represent everything that’s best in humanity in an exaggerated and iconic way.  They get to be the moral compass while other people disappoint them.  The consequences are different if/when these heroes fail.  There are more postmodern heroes.  Anti-heroes and characters at the forefront of shows that are not heroes at all.

There’s a difference between a character’s heroism and whether or not they will lie.  Kara’s entire life rests on duplicity, on a central lie that Kara Danvers is not Supergirl.  That doesn’t undermine Kara’s morality, because that duplicity protects her and her family.  Likewise, J’onn lied, because he was the last survivor of a race subjected to genocide, and he was being hunted by the DEO. In a world where you will be subjected to social alienation and systematic oppression by powerful governments if you live the truth of your identity openly, your duplicity and/or privacy is not your moral failure.

The show established Alex and J’onn’s reasons for lying about killing Astra.  They were wrong.  And they told her the truth.  She empathized immediately and forgave them both.  She hugged Alex as she wept and held her hand out to J’onn.  Kara was not so lost in her lofty moral ideals or superior in her mind that she rejected her sister or J’onn. She saw how terrified and broken Alex was, and she saw that what they were doing was a panicked attempt to show her love.  They were wrong.  There were consequences.  And Kara understood.

The show also established – although this feels patchy still – Jeremiah’s reasons for lying to his family.  We’ve seen Lillian Luthor openly threaten to wage war on his family.  And we have seen him change sides and fight alongside Alex.  He’s very confused, and this storyline feels confused.

James lied to keep his identity hidden from the public and establish himself as a vigilante hero.  He wanted to risk his life to save other people.  He kept the truth from Kara, and that was presented as a struggle for him.  He was outed, and there were consequences.  But no one ever questioned his intentions.  Kara only questioned whether he would get himself killed.  (Which doesn’t actually make since for her character and was mostly and bad storytelling, honestly.  She lets DEO agents, her sister, her sister’s partner, and everyone else take risks for what’s right all the time).

Obviously, the show will validate Mon-El, and there won’t be any lasting consequences for his lying, no real loss to him.  Mon-El will be forgiven.  He will get back with Kara.  And eventually, I imagine they will present him as a hero.  Still, his lies did not protect anyone.  Neither he nor anyone he loved was at risk.  He did not have a moral struggle with his own duplicity.  He did not even tell the secret on his own.  His lying is unique on this show.

He lied to present a false self in order to appear desirable to Kara.  That is canon.  He was not afraid or morally conflicted.  He felt entitled to withhold the truth in order to try to get what he wanted.  That’s what entitled people do all the time:  They exert subtle dominance over people to get the affection, acceptance, ease, and lack of accountability that they want while withholding the truth and undermining those people’s consent and their safety.  It’s a form of psychological dominance to lie to get what does not rightfully belong to you.  Safety from government oppression rightfully belongs to you.  A girlfriend does not.

But this show obviously believes that Mon-El has a right to Kara’s love and validation as a hero.  The only double standard in this show is how little Mon-El has to do to win the investment of the show and a segment of the audience.  We are all of us hoping that he will compensate for his lies by somehow magically becoming who he pretended to be.  Faith in that transformation seems to be buoying a lot of people.  Many of us believe that will be deeply fake, while he represents much of what is real and damaging in this culture.  And we don’t see him as a suitable hero figure at all.

Hi there Juliet/Chris whomever you are trying to disguise yourself as a simple butthurt anon

“Dear Lord are you guys serious? Everything that comes out of Juliets mouth is a lie to you but when she makes a JOKE about peeing on stage you think that’s true? That she peed on herself while doing a performance? Really? Half of what you are discussing here were jokes. Also some of the stuff Chris B. said. No good jokes or funny ones, but obviously jokes (for example her “hand-job” pic and Chris saying she’s a lady and would never do such things ore something like that –> joke)“

I’d like to adress something,If you truly had a leak down there and peed a little please don’t inform us thats not really a joking matter,If this was all purly a joke and you didn’t have a leak…SHAME ON YOU!!

Think of the people who have NO,ZIP,ZADDA,ZILCH,ZERO,CERO,NADDA,NONE,NAH,NINE! control over their bladder. That kind of joke could have hurt someone’s feelings.
and with the sexual jokes, okay in small doeses they can be funny especially if they are done right.so i have nothing against that one…well not much anyways my only problem with that is that you and your "hubby bubby rubby” are supposibly “secretive and private” about your relationship while you cling to him as if he is literally a walking embodiment of a life line that your metephorical career wise comatos ass needs to have in order to live.Like a parasite you feed off of him…disgusting you do all that and say you two are private…him maybe you NAH!

Chris she ain’t got class at all….
she is rude, disgusting, selfish and a liar whom BEAT your son!! how can you be so blinde.

SHAME ON YOU AS A FATHER!! I HOPE ANDY WAKES UP AND REALIZES ALL YOU ARE IS NOTHING MORE THAN AN ASSHOLE WHO IS LIVING HIS DREAM THROUGH HIS KID AND DISOWNS YOU.

YOU ARE JUST LIKE JULIET CLASSLESS,DISGUSTING,STUPID,VILE AND a LIAR!!! screw you!!

how you lie
  • Aries: Aries aren’t big into lying. It doesn’t serve a purpose to them. They have no patience for the drama that ensues if they’re caught in a lie. And when they do lie, it’s not a big deal to them.
  • Taurus: Tauruses are the stubborn ones, and they prefer things going their way. If it means that they have to tell a little white lie to have things done according to what they want, they would do it.
  • Gemini: Geminis are mischievous and love the attention from people. They have wild imaginations, so they can make stuff up on a whim, and people believe them! They’re so good at it that you end up not caring if it’s true or not.
  • Cancer: Loyal and caring, Cancer will only lie to protect you, whether it’s from someone else or from your own feelings. For them, it’s more of a way to reassure you that everything is fine even though it isn’t, and it’s out of the goodness of their hearts.
  • Leo: Like Geminis, Leos love the attention from people around them. So when they tell you a story, it may start off as truth, but a very exaggerated truth. The more amazed their audience is, the more exaggerated their stories will become.
  • Virgo: As much as possible, analytical Virgo doesn’t lie. Like Aries, they find it too bothersome and they’d rather focus on the situation at hand. However, the exception is if the truth stands in the way of resolving a situation. But even then, they’re considering all the pros and cons, and whether it’s really worth it.
  • Libra: Libras are the diplomats of the zodiac, so in the name of what they believe is best for everyone, lying is a necessity. Unlike Geminis and Leos, their lies are somewhat believable; people don’t even realize that they’re lying until it’s too late.
  • Scorpio: Suspicious and sometimes manipulative, lying is a game that Scorpios know all too well. This is because of their observant nature, which allows them to analyze every angle of a situation and come up with the best lie to go with it.
  • Sagittarius: The friendly and outgoing Sagittarius doesn’t lie. They value their friendships and the people around them too much to ever lie. But if they have to lie out of necessity, they don’ play around and it will be the biggest lie known to man, usually for a worthy cost.
  • Capricorn: Out of all the signs, Capricorns hate lying. They won’t do it and they refuse to do it. Because of their distrustful nature, it’s no wonder they’re against lying of any form. But if they do lie, it’s not hidden for very long. They’ll feel too guilty and end up telling the truth anyway.
  • Aquarius: Like Geminis, Aquarians are creative and witty storytellers. Their lies may be too good to be true, but they deliver it so flawlessly that people end up believing them.
  • Pisces: The most sensitive of the signs, Pisces don’t lie. But when they do, it’s only for a good cause. It’s either to protect you from being hurt or to protect themselves. Either way, they’re so sensitive that people can’t even be angry at them when their lie is found out.

Looks like we'll have to slog through another season of Larry Lannisturd. I don't think I've ever been less excited for something in my life, bravo D&D. Much as I would like to believe that Nikolaj is just pulling our leg I don't think that's the case. Why didn't Arya just kill him at the Twins? It would've saved us all this fucking torture.😡

Yeah I feel ya. I’m heading into the season more excited for other aspects of the show that don’t involve my favorite characters, which is sad. I always believed that Jaime was gonna stick by Cersei’s side if he headed back to King’s Landing, and after everything I’ve heard, that much is true. I’m not excited to see any part of it, and I’m sorry, it’s not good storyteling or televison for that matter, at least to me. It’s incredibly dull and predictable at this point. Still excited for the show to return though, can’t lie, I want to see the other cool shit they have in store for us, but as far as Jaime (and probably Brienne’s) story arcs go, I’m incredibly less enthused.

Why didn’t Arya just kill him at the Twins? It would’ve saved us all this fucking torture.😡

Lol, I mean they could’ve definitely saved us the pain.

~le sighs~

I shall always remember them like this. And I choose to totally ignore whatever’s happened after Catherine was introduced as one of the leading cast. Mostly because I gave a flying fuck about her when she was Steve’s booty-call girl. But also because I hate when the producers just get out of their skin to shove some stupid “everything about their relationship was a lie! See, here is the HETEROSEXUAL love interest! And now there’s a HETEROSEXUAL love story no one actually believes in” down your throat somewhere in the middle of a perfectly good show, ruining everything with a forced OOC story-line.

Besides, did they really think that after this

or this

or this

or this

or many other moments really, anyone would believe it wan’t true?!

I’m not the first one and definitely not the last one who brought up the “gay-baiting’ thing in the modern fiction. Just every time I come across one,it makes me feel sad – how something very good, something that never even needed any kind of confirmation except the subtext, would be turned into something ugly, illogical and broken.

You ever lie awake and think: Bilbo Baggins actually dropped everything and ran off into the blue with a legend? Thorin is quite literally legendary exiled royalty, the Company his last few true companions, and they’re off on some fantastical journey to defeat a dragon. It’d be like if King Arthur showed up on your doorstep with all his knights and asked you to help in their quest for the Grail.

I’d forget my pocket handkerchiefs as well.

Advice for a college freshman tryna move out to L.A.? Schools that are good for law at a somewhat reasonable price?

Don’t come to LA….we already packed asf…traffic sucks….everything you see on social media a lie. Leave LA for the true OG residents. That’s my advice. Stay in school doe, rent is most likely 2000+ here :)

The Man in the High Castle: Joe Blake [ISTP]

OFFICIAL TYPING by Charity / The Mod.

Introverted Thinking (Ti): If Joe was not a fast thinker on his feet, he would have been dead a long time ago – give him a few seconds and he can come up with logical solutions to his problems, way out of sticky situations, and what measure to take to ensure his own survival and the protection of those he cares about. He has a restless nature to him, which is not satisfied merely “following orders,” but desires to fully understand everything he’s doing and committed to; he’s intelligent enough to lie to everyone at all times, and plays things very close to his chest.

Extroverted Sensing (Se): He is also a risk taker, and inclined to act quickly in situations, for good or ill; he sometimes is so quick to leap on an opportunity that he endangers his true identity or his life (trying to steal and read files from his boss inside his own house, for example). Joe’s ability to think fast helps him fool the resistance and Nazis alike. He is aggressive and never leaves without what he came for, even if it means slamming a door shut, grabbing someone else’s weapon, and shooting two people in the head to reclaim what he was sent to get.

Introverted Intuition (Ni): His gut tells him there’s more to the films than first appears, and that Juliana is important; it also clues him into her true motivations late in their arc, which enables him to recognize what is actually going on … maybe too late. The fact that he became a Nazi speaks to his lower desire to have some greater vision for the future, and a larger purpose in his life – but as he goes along, he begins to see the larger picture and the flaws in the idealistic vision.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe): He can charm other people when he wants to, and has no problem comforting Juliana, but doesn’t easily open up about his feelings – and then, he does so in a tearful way (“I’m a better man for having met you”). He’s also prone to the influence of other people, and to taking on their cause as his own.

Ok I need to talk about this before I explode all over my bedroom walls

THERE WILL BE SPOILERS THROUGH SEASON 3 WHAT HAS AIRED SO FAR (episode 4) OK ??????????????

SPOILERS

OK ????????????

SPOIIIIILERS

SO STOP.

Okay.

I’ve marathoned this show (Season 1- episode 4 of season 3) in two days. So it’s all FRESH as day in my head at the moment, I’ve had a good long bit to think about everything.

Flint and Silver.

Yes, you knew this was coming.

Season 1 was interesting. They were so very wary of each other. Always had one eye on the other. But what I find so INTERESTING is Silver’s protectiveness. I think it’s subconsciously. At first I was like, meh it’s because Silver just wants to survive. Which is TRUE. 100% true. He is out for himself and will do whatever he can, make up what ever lie he can to survive what comes next. But in the finale of the first season when Flint kills Gates (THAT SCENE, UGH KILL ME FLINT BB I WANT TO GIVE YOU A HUG) << clearly I’m disturbed because he murdered someone and I was like AWWWW and wanted to give him a hug…jfc

Anyway

When Flint murdered Gates, Silver walked in, and we all know how smart Silver is. He’s a fucking snarky sassy genius. He walks in on Flint being vulnerable, Flint in emotional distress and he chooses to comfort him in that moment, saying what he knew Flint needed to hear. I believe Silver is aware that he is probably the only person (besides Gates) to see Flint like this with his guard down. And I think it intrigued him. I’d be curious to know Luke Arnold (actor who plays John Silver)’s thought about it. Because the way he played it, it seemed there on from the finale of season 1, that he became much more aware of Flint and his state. And as much as didn’t want to, he cared.

Season 2. Something is happening and they’re drawn to each other slowly. Idk if it’s just their personalities, or what. Silver is by Flint’s side more and more and I’m not the only one who noticed that. They’re gravitating towards each other. They still don’t necessarily like each other, per se, but that is not stopping them from just floating in the other’s space. As the episodes go on, it became more clear to me that Silver was attaching himself to Flint. Not emotionally or anything, but I think he knew that Flint was the guy he had to cling to for the best chance of surviving whatever came next. Which is what he always does. And that’s where this dynamic really kicked off. When Silver realized that.

He offers more guidance than usual, makes comments on Flint’s own personality to Flint’s face (like when he studied Flint’s face at that table they were sitting at together in the fight against Vane in the fort and said out loud that Flint does care how he’s seen and he’s bothered by being seen as a villian. He sat there across from him, and just by like, Flint twitching his brow and moving his lip, Silver knew exactly what he was feeling.). And Flint shuts these attempts down, sees that Silver is trying to get to him and see who he is and he does NOT like that.

Ok. HOLY SHIT.

Season 3. You guys. They are…I can’t even describe what’s happening. So many things have happened in the first 4 episodes and it’s hard to explain. They are both emotionally and mentally attaching to the other. In episode 1, Silver knows Flint is getting worse, can see it when no one else can the second Flint steps off that boat (”He’s getting worse). He wants other crew members to sweep the decks of opposing ships before Flint does. Of course I always try to debunk and take off my slash goggles. I thought that maybe Silver sees how important Flint is to the crew and he must be acting like this because he’s finally starting to care for the crew and be a part of something.

He opposed Flint in the room with Billy and Flint said not to go against him (”Not in this state.”) And somehow they both knew Flint didn’t mean the situation. He meant in the state of mind and emotional state of mind he was in. Don’t fuck with him in this state of mind. It was unspoken and Billy didn’t get it. And these two are on the same wavelength, but are still fighting it. Which is my favorite aspect of it.

It’s so interesting.

The scene where he approaches a seemingly sleeping Flint, watches him sleep for a moment (WHAT). They start talking and Silver studies his face again. Watches his body language and then goes for it. Tells him he knows how hard it is for him after Barlow’s death and even when Flint is clearly made vulnerable by this statement, he keeps going. Tries to press on a button somewhere to make Flint reveal some part of himself. And Flint shuts it down, literally says “Stop. You may have wormed your way into the heads of the men out there. And they grant you authority over them because of it, but in my head, your’e not welcome.”

Flint is aware, he’s aware that Silver is trying to get into his head, to understand him, and he doesn’t want that. Toby Stevens (actor who plays Flint) said in multiple interviews for season 3 press that Flint has shut himself down. He does not want emotional connection to anyone because he feels that whoever he shares an emotional connection with either dies or betrays him. And he can’t bear the pain anymore, so he shuts down and tries to cast aside his humanity and just exist as a monster in his Captain Flint persona with nothing but rage. But he CAN’T. He can’t cast away the humanity like that when he already had it as James McGraw. But he’s in pain and he’s alone because no Gates. No Miranda Barlow. No Thomas. And so he’s suffering emotionally alone by choice because he can’t bear the pain of caring for someone else/having someone care for him.

That’s some deep shit.

But Silver keeps trying. And he’s slowly breaking through. That scene when he’s talking to Billy? (”I’m clearheaded, Billy. I can see him.) So amazing. He sits there, looking sad and longing as he tells Billy how Flint is feeling, because he KNOWS! How Flint is in pain and the only way he’ll stop raging and end it all “is when none of us are left to witness it.” He’s aware that Flint is in pain right now. And that he’s trying to hide it. Ugh it was so great and so…..UGH. But now they’re talking by episode 4.

Really talking, Flint is talking to him, opens up to him when they’re locked in that cage. (UGH when Silver tried to move to see Flint’s face and asked him “Where are you?” UGHHHHHH PERFECT). And Flint bears himself to Silver and when I saw that scene I thought it was so beautiful and so sad and so brave of Flint. And Silver looked so shocked and so sad for Flint. And I’m so eager to see the next episode because I feel like their threads finally connected. Silver opened up to Flint in episode 3 when they were in the boat. An act of desperation in hopes to connect emotionally to Flint to make him see him as his equal.

And it worked, Flint opened up too. And I want to think that is solidifying it. Both Luke and Toby (and the creators) said these two are going to become co dependent, that the only person the other thinks they have to go to is each other. And seeing their emotional journey and seeing these two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MEN can get to that place….gravitate to each other against their will. And ultimately attach to each other…

I do ship them, but in a completely different way.

Their dynamic is one of the most compelling things on television that I’ve ever seen.

I wrote a Michiru and Hotaru drabble??

JW and I are both working on writing together for fun, fashion, and self-confidence, and anyway my random draw of the day was Michiru and Hotaru at the zoo and this is what I came up with–I hated it, but JW was really encouraging and this isn’t TOO off blog topic, so here

It should have been, she supposed, a pleasant day with mother and child at the zoo. This was true, divorced from several relevant facts: That Michiru was barely out of being a child herself; that she and Haruka’s relationship was still on the mend after everything that happened in the cathedral and every lie she had ever told; that Hotaru was both 6 months, and, she guessed, 7 years old, but also 13, for good measure.

But the most relevant fact, floating away on the sound of a lion’s roar, was that Michiru was not done lying, that none of them were done lying, and that they had all tried to kill this little girl to save the world entire, and now they posed as parents to the child prone to unusual growth spurts and odd declarations of death and suffering. Michiru had simply leapt from one lie to the next.

The English garden was a beautiful place for them to breakfast, and Hotaru grinned brightly at the formal tea she and Michiru were enjoying, both of them decked in fine tea dresses and wide-brimmed hats. It was easy to be jolly on a day like today, when the sun was soft and warm, and the grass fresh as Eden. It was a bit early, Michiru thought, for a formal tea, but none of that mattered to Hotaru, who cautiously stirred her tea just as Michiru had taught her, careful not to let the teaspoon hit the sides of the rose-patterned china.

Hotaru sat forward in her chair and tilted her face up at Michiru, eyes full of excitement. But she kept her voice measured and polite. “Michiru-mama, would you be so kind as to pass a cucumber sandwich?”

Michiru smiled at Hotaru’s careful mirroring of her own speech. “Why yes of course, my dear.” She picked up the tongs and placed a cucumber sandwich on Hotaru’s small plate, with a radish one for good measure. Hotaru settled back into her seat, happily eating the soft delight, her hat casting a shadow across her face.

Haruka had tucked peonies into the brims, ‘blossoms for my beautiful blossoms.’ Michiru frowned at the memory. However beautiful and domestic their lives might prove, it could only ever be for now, and it worried Michiru that she was the only one who seemed to know it. Haruka had thrown herself into motherhood, a chance to do things better than her childhood had been, and Setsuna relished this small ersatz family they had created, teaching Hotaru everything she knew about history and math and science, Hotaru could not hope for a better teacher.

But Michiru knew it would all come to an end. Hotaru was already beginning to ask questions about why she grew as she did, and why she couldn’t go to school. She was a clever girl, and Michiru wished that she was not. She could already see the pain etched on Haruka and Setsuna’s faces when the game of playing house came to a close.

But not Michiru. Michiru never let herself get too close, she had not been taken in at all, and no matter how dear this little girl was sitting at her vanity and making herself up to be as her elegant and beautiful mama, Michiru reminded herself that Hotaru was a little girl, but not her little girl, and never could be. It was foolish oneself to get so involved, as the other two did.

Hotaru struggled with the Devonshire cream, and Michiru quickly helped her dip the small spoon into the cream and dabble some on her scone.

“Thank you, Michiru-mama.”

“You’re welcome, Hotaru.” She nodded. “You’re doing wonderfully. Did you want to go see the parrots, perhaps?”

Hotaru looked down at her scone for a moment. “Can we stay here for awhile? I like it here.”

“Then we shall stay here so long as they allow. I promise.”

So if you can’t read any of this here you go and don’t lie I know you can see who they are

If the Christian gospel is true, everything else is a lie. If Christ alone saves, those who do not believe in Him are doomed. The church can’t lead sinners to salvation if it presents one road as being as good as another. Yet I hear this inclusivism all the time from so-called Christians. If you’re afraid of causing discord by upholding the narrow exclusivity of Jesus’ message, that is the same as choosing the broad way. The gospel is exclusive. Jesus is the only way. The gate is that narrow. - John MacArthur
