autistic studying advice

by an autistic undergrad

1) Don’t trust all study guides by NTs

Their brains are wired differently and some things that work for them won’t work for us. There’s a chance those tips and tricks won’t do anything for you, which might make you feel like a failure. You aren’t! If something doesn’t work, move on. It’s okay.

2) If you have executive dysfunction, laziness and lack of motivation is not your problem

When you struggle with executing tasks it may feel like you are lazy and aren’t motivated enough, but that’s not necessarily true! You might be hella motivated and still not be able to do a task. Trying to motivate yourself in that case will only make you more frustrated.

3) Get distractions out of the way

Little things that would not distract a neurotypical person might distract you, in which case you won’t be able to work to your full capacity. Build a sensory friendly environment with no noises, bright lights, bad smells, etc. Use ear plugs or music if you need to. Get stim toys if you stim a lot to concentrate. Good environment is very important and is probably the reason why you struggle at school/college/uni where your senses might be overstimulated.

4) If you tend to hyperfocus, learn when it happens

Hyperfocus can be incredibly useful for studying, so if it happens to you, try to identify when it happens. For me I tend to hyperfocus when there are absolutely no distractions (for me that often means when I have headphones on and I’m alone). Then replicate those factors to get more done.

5) Learn ways around executive dysfunction and limited energy

This is the most difficult part. Studying when you have problems with executing tasks and limited spoons (energy resources) is tough. Here’s how you can deal with it.

6) Understand your priorities

You will not be able to do as much as NTs do in one day. Deal with it now. Understand that simple tasks such as brushing your teeth or talking on the phone also require energy. So prioritize. Assume you can only do one thing today, the most important/urgent one, and do that first. Then the less important thing. And so on.

7) “Don’t half-ass things” is a lie

Half-ass things. Quarter-ass things. If you can only do one math problem today, do it. That will be one less math problem later. If you can only read a few pages of a textbook today, do it. It’s also easy to think “if I can’t write the essay and finish that project today, might as well do nothing”. That’s a lie too. Do a small thing but do something. Do something badly but still do it. You might be able to fix it later. There’s no shame in being disabled, no matter what society makes you think.

8) Do the most complicated thing first

If you have several tasks and one requires more executive functioning, do that first. Your planning skills are probably at best right after you wake up, before you have time to spend any energy. So that’s the best time to do tasks with many steps or to plan tasks ahead.

9) Rest and take breaks right

It’s important to take breaks in between work, but you have to do it right. You might be tempted to do something useful for a break to be productive - like take a walk or read a book or talk to someone. Do not, or at least do not unless you are absolutely sure. Switching to another task requires mental energy, so that will only deplete your energy sources.

For breaks, do something ridiculously easy. Go on social media. Listen to a song and sing along. Watch a YouTube video. Stim. Daydream. Even lay down and close your eyes for five minutes. Just don’t switch to tasks that also require energy.

10) Don’t try to learn by repetition

Studies show that learning by repetition doesn’t work for us. It will not help you make more connections in your brain. Instead, do different tasks. Read from a book. Write down important points from the book. Read them out loud. Try to repeat them without looking. Pretend to explain it to someone. Answer questions related to the material. Draw it. Watch a video about it. Make a mnemonic for it. Whatever. Just don’t sit there reading it again and again.

11) Be kind to yourself

Your energy levels and capabilities will fluctuate from day to day, and you can’t always know how it will turn out. On some days I can write an essay from scratch in one sitting. On others I struggle to make myself a cup of tea. That’s normal, and it’s not your fault. Blaming yourself for it will only upset you and make it less likely that you do at least something today.

Imagine it like this: you are playing a game, and the difficulty setting randomly switches every day. On some days it’s on easy and you get through five levels with no problems. On some days it’s on very difficult and you can’t even get to the first checkpoint. That’s okay. Say to yourself, “my abilities haven’t changed, the difficulty changed”. Today, just get to that checkpoint. Tomorrow you might get through five levels.

12) Learn from other autistic people

For any other problem you might come across, other autistic people are the best source of knowledge. Allistic parents, teachers, friends, mentors, etc are likely to not understand your problem at all, or give you bad advice. Instead consult the real autism experts - actually autistic people. There are plenty of us who got through school, college and/or uni. Reach out to them. They will help.

Good luck!

Anybody in adoption au telling momma May that they're not straight

“anybody” B)

from the Let Us Love series

~1500 words

read on AO3

Eleven-year-old Jemma paces back and forth in the living room, her breathing measured, her hands wringing. She thought about just telling May first, or telling Fitz, but she wants this out in the open. It’s easiest to just rip it off like a bandaid.

“Is it something bad?” Skye asks nervously, sat between May and Fitz on the couch. Antoine is sitting in the recliner, rocking it back and forth.

“No,” Jemma quickly says, then stops, winces, and keeps pacing. “I mean, I- I don’t think so.”

“Whatever it is,” May says, “we’ll deal with it as a family.”

“I don’t know if it’s something to be ‘dealt with’ per se.”

“It’s just- I’m just a little nervous, that’s all.”

“Spit it out, Jem,” Skye whines, sliding down into a slump. “Fairly OddParents is about to come on.”

Fitz smacks her lightly. “Sh-She can take her time.”

Jemma shoots him a grateful smile, and then stops pacing, facing them all. “Okay. Okay, well, see—” She lets out a small huff, gives a decisive nod, and then continues, “There’s this girl I like.”

She’s met with blank stares, and she shakes her head and starts again.

“I mean- Really like.” She motions with her hands. “Like like.”

“Oh,” May says.

Jemma continues before anyone can say any more, “And it hasn’t just been a one-time thing. It’s happened before, this isn’t just an isolated incident or anything. I put the evidence together and I came to the conclusion that I like girls.”

“So—” May starts.

“So you’re gay?” Antoine asks.

“No,” Jemma says. “I like boys, too. I’m- um—” She puffs herself up a bit, ready to take whatever might come. “I’m bi.”

“What’s that mean?” Fitz asks, his brows scrunching together.

Life Doesn’t Always Turn Out the Way You Plan

I was trying to post this on AO3, because it’s going to be a multi-parter. But AO3 is being grouchy tonight. So the first part will go up here, and get put up over there when the database starts behaving itself again. Then the rest of the chapters will go up over there too.

“While You Were Sleeping” is one of my all-time favorite movies ever. It just doesn’t feel like Christmas unless I’ve watched it at least once. And because I love it so much, I won’t be able to resist slipping verbatim quotes in here and there. So, watch out for those. Also, I know this is a Valentine’s challenge, but this movie is so wrapped up with Christmas for me that I had to set it then.

I’ll be honest - after this chapter, the rest of this so far is pretty much an outline interspersed with scene scraps. I’m hoping to post at least twice a week, but the schedule may be, ummmm, flexible. I’ll still try to get it all done in the month deadline.

That said, enjoy!

Life Doesn’t Always Turn Out the Way You Plan

My dad used to say something to me all the time when I was growing up. He would get this distant look in his eyes and he would tell me, “Iris, baby, life doesn’t always turn out the way you plan.”

l just wish I’d realized at the time he was talking about my life.

13. Klaroline, canon and smutty if possible 💕 These prompts are amazing!

Okay so I haven’t written smut in ages, and a drabble feels too short to do it properly but this is my sorry attempt! This drabble happens in the future with established Klaroline. All TVD/TO canon happened which yes includes the children.

Smut under the read more.

KC + “Looks like we’re gonna be stuck here for a while.”

Klaus stares at the door like he can magically glare it open. The remains of a broken chair lie next to him, while Caroline sits on the sofa, looking entirely too entertained at his tantrum.

“Well it looks like we’re going to be stuck here for a while,” Caroline announces while she jumps up and pours herself a glass of wine.

“This is amusing to you?” Klaus turns to her and throws his hands in the air, “My daughter just locked us in my house so she can go who knows where!” he exclaims.

“She’s a teenager,” Caroline shrugs. “You told her that she wasn’t allowed to go to the party, so she snuck out. It’s completely normal teenager behavior. She just had to be a little more creative because she knows you would have made a spectacle and dragged her back home if she didn’t stop you.”

“So you would be okay if the twins do the same when they’re old enough?” Klaus challenges her while he sits back. He knew he should have just let Hayley and Elijah take care of Hope for the weekend. They had already argued a bunch of times over that stupid party and now… now she was going anyway and he couldn’t leave and get her.

“Oh I doubt they would,” Caroline laughs, “I mean not the sneaking out part, I did that all the time as a kid as well. But I assume they know I would be mad that they snuck out, but I wouldn’t embarrass them and show up at the party to drag them home like you would.”

“So you’re saying this is my fault?”

“Kinda,” she shrugs. “Besides I don’t know what you’re worried about. I already texted Josh and he’s keeping an eye on her.” She turned towards Klaus and hoped he would see reason. “She just wants to be normal, Klaus. Parties other teenagers go to? They are a big part of that.”

“So you’re saying I overreacted?” he moves towards Caroline, who is finishing her wine on the sofa. He knows he tends to react strongly when it concerns the safety of those he loves, but he just wants them in one piece.

“Massively,” Caroline agrees, gesturing to the broken furniture around them.

“So I should just let her do this and walk away scot-free?” Klaus asks for clarification. He might be Hope’s parent, but Caroline is a lot more familiar with parenting in modern times than he is.

“Definitely not,” Caroline laughs, “She deserves some type of punishment, especially since she used her magic on us, but it can wait till tomorrow. Let her have one night of fun before she’s grounded for the next couple of weeks.”

“You’re way too reasonable about this,” Klaus argues and pauses before her. He reaches out and hoists her from the sofa.

“Well someone has to,” she winks at him and smiles, “So… what are we going to do now that we have the whole place to ourselves?”

“I have some ideas,” Klaus murmurs and he flashes forward.

Like Old Times

For @audreycritter You challenged me with this and I hope you enjoy it.

Words: 1,700

Rating: Fluffy

Summary: Dick and Bruce bonding over crepes.

Matches Malone sneezed, his nose wrinkling up just before and after the act, the first time to hold back the inevitable, the second to hold back his flopping mustache. Dick had to hold back laughter as his mentor discreetly pushed it back into place and glared at him over his sunglasses.

“Not a word.” Bruce threatened.

“Wasn’t going to say anything.” Dick said, popping a strawberry into his mouth to chew on.

They were seated across from each other at one of Wayne Enterprises hotel’s enjoying a breakfast of crepes and orange juice. They were outside for two reasons: it was sunny, and their mark was eating two tables down from them.

Bruce’s mobster costume, and the whole setting were making Dick imagine old movies and tv shows from the 60s and 70s. He was tempted to pretend they were the Men from UNCLE or spies on an impossible mission. Not that it wasn’t close enough to the truth, they were following a drug kingpin, and at some point, they would be suiting up to take him down.

Dick should be bored, they’d been there hours before the man had showed up and still another hour as he ordered and ate, and in all that time Bruce had said less than fifty words. Instead of being bored, Dick found he was enjoying the day. He hadn’t sat across from Bruce on a stakeout like this almost since he’d been in pixy boots.

He missed time alone with Bruce. Missed missions being just the two of them, Dick cracking jokes and Bruce being too serious for his own good. On impulse, he reached out with his fork and snatched the last banana slice from Bruce’s plate, adding it to his own.

“That wasn’t yours.” There was that look again, over the sunglasses, but this time there was a smile. Yes, he’d missed this.

Could you do Makoto, Rin, and Haru's reaction to hearing their crush's best friend suddenly blurting out that their crush likes them? ((Please and thank you!))

(ahaha of course!! i’ve seen this request before but i didn’t think i would get it! here we go!  (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧)

Makoto: His crush would be slapping their best friend to get them to shut up, but he’d still be shocked from head to toe and glued to the floor the moment their sentence finished. His mouth would kind of hang open for a moment, but no words would come out. He knew he couldn’t assume things like feelings so easily, but he couldn’t help but hope a little that it was true judging from their reaction. He wouldn’t know what else to say as the duo stumbled down the hallway, so all that would come out was, “I-I’ll see you tomorrow!” with a bright red on his face.

Haruka: He’d jump a little from the sudden turn of events, from his crush waving to him to their best friend blurting out “____ likes you, Nanase!” to his crush then letting out some sort of flustered screech and pushing them away from him. Not once had he even considered either of them confessing since he began to like them, so the indirect confession was something he was having a lot of trouble wrapping his head around. He’d give an awkward wave until they finally disappeared from view, but would then stare at his feet and hope the hair hanging in front of his face would hide the blush spreading across his cheeks and ears.

Rin: Rin wouldn’t be able to respond properly for the first few seconds, as he’d be choking on his drink and needing to cough all the water out of his throat before gaping at his crush and their best friend. “Wh-What? What’d you say?” His crush wouldn’t even be listening, since they were busy yelling at their best friend and pushing them down the hallway and away from him. “H-Hey!” He’d call out one more time, but in the end all he could do was groan and grasp at his hair in exasperation. He’d missed his chance again, but how was he supposed to face them now? It made him go red just thinking about it, and the “confession” definitely would have him distracted for a good day or two.

I'll Take Care of You- A Sammy Wilk Imagine (Requested)

“Come on Mia, it’s time for bed!” I cooed as I carried my one year old daughter to her bedroom.

“Daddy?” She mumbled in my chest and I sighed.

“Daddy will be home soon, you’ll see him tomorrow. I promise baby.” I said as I laid her down.

I watched her as she drifted off into a peaceful sleep. I loved being a mom it was the best thing to ever happen to me, and I couldn’t wait for another baby.

I headed back to the kitchen to clean things up before my husband Sam Wilkinson got home. He usually ran late the nights he had to be at the studio, it was difficult but expected.
After cleaning up Mia’s mess, I went into my office to do a few things for work before bed. I was too wrapped up in my email to hear the front door open and close.

As I typed the email, I felt a pair of large hands begin to massage my shoulders. I immediately knew this was Sam as he loved giving me massages, something I was so grateful for.

“Hey baby. I missed you.” He whispered in my ear, which still sent shivers down my body. Even after being together for as long as we have, he still had the power to drive me wild. He then kissed my cheek.

“Hey Sam, I missed you too but I need to finish this email.” I sighed.

“Finish it later, let’s do some catching up.” He whispered in my ear once more.

“Sam.” I warned.

“Y/N come on, you need to unwind. Let me take care of you tonight.” Sam insisted.

I turned around in my chair, looking up at Sam who looked so irresistible that I wanted to have him right here in my office chair.

“Only because I love you.” I said giving in.

We headed quietly into our bedroom. Mia was a heavy sleeper, so we knew she wouldn’t hear anything. Once in our room, Sam kissed me with such passion. I swear each kiss, felt like the first.

The kiss deepened, our hands roaming each others bodies like it was a new experience. I pushed Sam back to our bed, until he fell back on it. Before I crawled on top of him, I decided to give him a little show. I stripped for Sam, until nothing was left. Sam’s eyes widened with each article of clothing removed. As I took off my clothes, he took off his. If I had learned anything from being with Sam it was that we both wanted to get right to it.

I slowly crawled over Sam, my lips meeting his once more. My hands were tangled in his hair, while his were exploring my body. My hips rolled against his hardening member, causing him to moan. My lips traveled down to his neck, making sure to leave marks. Sam took the chance to flip us over. His lips now traveling down my body, inching closer and closer to where I wanted his lips on me most.

He flicked his tongue on my area, like he always did and like always I was a moaning mess. Sam hadn’t shaved in days, so his face was stubbly and rubbing against my inner thighs, only adding to the pleasure. My hands gripped onto the sheets, I’d probably make him bleed if they dug into his back.

“Fuck Sam, I’m gonna come.” I yelled as my entire body trembled.

“Mmmm sweet as always.” he mumbled as he crawled up kissing my lips so I could taste myself.

I attempted to push Sam on his back, so I could have my fun with him, but he stopped me.

“Nah ah, this is all about you. I want to take care of my Princess.” Sam said with a smiling as he kissed me passionately, ready to make love.

3 months later

“Holy shit.” I mumbled staring at the two positive pregnancy tests in front of me. I had a suspicion I was pregnant again, I started feeling sick like I was when I was pregnant with Mia. I felt so overjoyed to be having another baby and could not wait to tell Sam the news.

I decided the best and cutest way to tell Sam would be to have a “baby” themed dinner. This meant, baby back ribs, baby corn, and baby carrots.

Sam arrived home on time and greeted Mia who was in the living room and me in the kitchen.

“What’s for dinner?” Sam asked, licking his lips.

“Baby back ribs, baby corn and some baby carrots.” I said nonchalantly.

“Wow, a lot of baby foods.” Sam laughed.

“Wellllll.” I said dragging out the word, as I placed the food on the table.

“Wait, Y/N. You aren’t pregnant are you?” Sam asked, his jaw dropped.

“Found out today!” I said smiling.

“Oh my goodness! This is amazing, we’ve wanted another one for awhile now. It’s perfect!” Sam said overjoyed as he wrapped me up in his arms.

“I’m so happy, that you’re happy.” I said smiling up at Sam.

“How could I not be happy!? I have the best wife and mother for my children in the world!” Sam said giving me a sweet kiss.

“Thank you for being so supportive in all of this.” I said overjoyed Sam wasn’t freaked out for another child.

“You know I’ll always be there to take care of you and our children. Our family means the absolute world to me.” Sam said kissing me once more.
