Ewer depicting a charioteer and three mourners between geometric patterns. Kavousi. Geometric Period. 9th-8th century B.C.

The mountainous environs of Kavousi, Hierapetra, were inhabited from the 12th to the 6th century B.C. The remote settlement of Kastri is associated with two tholos tombs, one of which was discovered intact, but looted, underneath a wine press installation inside a farm house.

I remember reading somewhere about the establishment of games like chariot races as part of the funerary services around this time…but I can’t remember where…was it in the museum…was it in a book?
