idk what to tag this as i don't want this in the main tags

Six of Crows lock screens

Kaz: he wasn’t going to customize it much, because y’know, keep em guessing, but he wanted to get rid of the default screen, so he went to see if any of the pre-loaded options were a darker color. then he saw that one of them was a black bird’s wing and he was like “oh shit. that’s my #aesthetic” and it’s pretty much been that ever since

Inej: a group selfie of her, Nina, and Jesper doing Blue Steel-esque faces. in the corner of the photo is a fuzzy black blur that is Kaz, completely ignoring Jesper’s “Kaz!! selfie! look up!!” (it’s prior to Wylan and Matthias’s addition to the group but she loves that photo so much, it would be a bummer to change it.)

Nina: she changes it all the time. some favorites include: her and Inej wearing sunglasses and too-cool-for-you expressions; an unflattering photo of Matthias caught off guard; a cup of hot chocolate being held by hands engulfed in the cuffs of a bulky sweater; a flowery background with “i do what i want” in a digital speech bubble on top.

Matthias: it used to be that his lock screen and home screen were both a snowy mountain landscape view; Nina bugged him about being boring, and after a while he changed it so the lock screen was a sweet picture of her smiling (he did not show her for like a week)

Wylan: a picture of him making an exaggerated surprised/happy face when Jesper kisses his cheek. Inej sees it first and actually groans out loud because it’s so cute; the noise catches Jesper’s attention so he looks over at it and says “oh my god you’re so fucking gay.”

Jesper: it used to be like a really good selfie of himself. like, the kind of selfie that is flattering and also shows of your personality, the kind you post to three different social media apps and reblog if it doesn’t get enough notes. (“oh my god, your lock screen is yourself?” inej scoffs.  “that’s so vain.”/“but look how good this selfie is.”/“damn. you’re right.”) but then one day he takes a photo of Wylan doing something that captures his full attention (flute? equation? something sciencey? idk), and he looks at it and is like “goddamnit, this is such a great photo.” he puts a bunch of heart eyes/heart/gay couple emojis on top and sets that as his lock screen instead.

(part 1) ur gonna roast me for this but im legit curious why mafia AUs are so bad? im asking in a non confrontational way, i get it romanticizing mafia is wrong, but i also believe that 1)most mafia AUs are a really toned down type of mafia;2)they do make for some interesting kinds of dynamics with fanart and with fics; 3)in a fic specifically u can create your own world and call something mafia and still make it so they don't kill innocent people but only idk members of other gangs or sth

(part 2) plus theyre a way to put ur charas in a completely diff context and see what theyll do. i mean i dont believe that writing ships in a certain context (like mafia) equals romanticizing that context. mafia AUs arent even my fav things to read (in fact i almost never do), im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

I’m not gonna roast you don’t worry xD okay wait let me check if I replied to this already if yes I’m gonna c/p because it’s half past midnight otherwise I’ll just go at it again wait *checks tags* fff obviously I don’t have a general post but anyway pls read this after you’ve done with my post and then this which is also choke-full of links. plus for a (not nice) laugh: here. AH WAIT I FOUND THE POST.

okay, so, let’s have it out of the way: I have nothing against mob aus or crime aus. I have a problem against calling them mafia AUs because in the US mafia = organized crime at large, in Italy mafia = ACTUAL EXISTING ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE ACTIVELY HARMFUL. now that I introduced the topic I’ll c/p you the reply I gave to another anon who while discussing the issue pointed out that most writers don’t even know Italian mafia is a thing, which is pretty much on the same discourse so…

*The thing is - in the US it might not be enough of a deal anymore and I honestly do get why people make the mafia = regular mobsters, since the mafia was the first foreign organized crime being exported to the US via italian immigrants (sorry if this sounds horrible in English but I just woke up and I still didn’t have coffee) so I understand that mafia became the umbrella term. But the thing is that - as you said, these people don’t even know that there’s a mafia in Italy anymore or where the word comes from.

I’m going to link to italiansreclaimingitaly’s tag about the mafia and its perception outside Italy because they posted about this extensively and it’s an excellent resource, but meanwhile I’m gonna do a very short bullet point list and about the topic:

  • Mafia might not be a big deal in the US, but it still is here. We have the beauty of four different mafias (Cosa Nostra - the Sicilian one, camorra which is the one in Campania but has tendrils spread everywhere, the ‘ndrangheta which is in Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia) which are all active [especially camorra and 'ndrangheta] and whose actions have direct impact (negative) on our economy and on our society. Actually mafias are one of the main reasons we’re currently economically fucked up, and if I start talking about how mafia culture keeps some areas literally backwards I could talk about it for three months.
  • There are still people who are killed for standing up against them. These days the most prominent personality is Roberto Saviano who is a writer who dared to put together a book documenting minutely the way camorra works and he’s been living under protection for years by this point. Like, they want him dead because he wrote a book. And I’m sorta sure that he was talking about leaving Italy and going to the US after years of sticking with it here because he can’t take it anymore but I don’t know if it was a taken decision or if it’s still debating it.
  • It wasn’t even thirty years ago that we had the stragi di mafia - in english it’d be something like the mafia slaughters, basically around the beginning of the nineties there were a number of bombs planted by the mafia targeting people who were trying to oppose it including judges Falcone and Borsellino, actually the anniversary of Falcone’s death is like… tomorrow. And they’ve killed people for way longer than that. Here is a list of only Cosa Nostra victims including the ones from the eighties/nineties. And people are still dying because of it. The slaughters I’m referring to are just the ones in the nineties which are enough of a number.
  • They also perpetuate a culture where if you testify against your mafia-employed relatives you’ll be shunned forever. There are women who testified against their families and couldn’t see their children anymore never mind that they weren’t automatically considered a relative anymore the moment they sided against the mafia. Some people have committed suicide after becoming witnesses also because our police force/justice system can be terribly non-supportive in this kind of situation so they got left on their own. Never mind that back in the day - it was the beginning of the nineties? - I recall at least a particular story of - I think, correct me if I remember wrong but I can’t remember the names for the life of me - where this guy testified against the local mafia when he either used to work for them or was forced to pay them the pizzo and in retaliation his six-year old (or five? Anyway he had a son younger than ten for sure) got kidnapped, killed and thrown into acid to dispose of the body. That happened in what, 1993? 1994? It’s pretty much yesterday. And now the camorra is doing the same - there’s a list here of camorra victims among which accidental passerbys that got killed because they were in the way which I can tell just by glancing is not complete. And I’m not even going into the 'ndrangheta. That is to say, here mafia still kills people and cripples our country.

Now, I get that it’s a word, but the point was: let’s say that instead of the Italians the Japanese came to the US first and the umbrella word for organized crime was yakuza rather than mafia and let’s say yakuza was still what it was originally in Japan while in the US it stopped being a big deal and people write yakuza!AU instead of mafia AU. Let’s say someone Japanese gets angry at that and goes like 'listen the yakuza is a real deal it does this this this and that and it’s a plague in our country so can you please at least look it up before writing your fanfic’, which is what had happened way back then when this whole mafia and fanfic thing blew up. A bunch of people told us to get over it because it’s just a word and if it’s a problem in Italy it’s not in the US so why should they care? Now, if we had been Japanese (or Chinese or Russian or Mexican) would they have said the same thing? Considering the general tumblr attitude I’m pretty sure they would have received either an apology or 'this is an important deal let’s keep that in mind’ with signal boost reblogs and stuff.

It’s the fact that we should get over people not knowing that it’s still a real problem for us and that they can’t take five seconds to google it that is the problem imo. Especially when instead of mafia au you can just say mobsters au or tag it as organized crime and everyone is a lot happier, mostly because as the tag above explains romanticising the mafia is a good thing for them because it means they can act outside Italy with less stigma because everyone thinks that the mafia is dead or not relevant anymore, if I’m explaining myself. (And it’s active outside Italy - like, there was a mafia kill in Germany in 2007 where six people died (sorry the link is in Italian but there isn’t an English wiki page, if you look the city up you’ll find something probably) and it was because of the 'ndrangheta.

I’d really like to not get worked over it because it meant it was a thing of the past y'know, but the problem is that it isn’t and I’d rather spread some awareness in hope some of these writers look it up (because it’s a good thing that people know what mafia is since as stated they have tendrils everywhere - if you read Saviano’s book the entire first chapter is about how camorra regularly deals with Chinese import/export in Italy for one) than shrug and figure that since they’ll think everything is good for fanfic then it’s not even worth my time.*

Now, ^^^ that was the c/p-ed reply that should answer most of your doubts. What I didn’t address was:

im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

aaaand as we say here in Italy, this is where the donkey falls (sorry we have weird sayings), because in theory there’s nothing wrong with that… except that in 99% of the mafia aus I’ve seen around the thing is that they’re supposed to be cute.

like, I see a lot of shit with TINY MAFIA BOSS STEVE ROGERS with RUSSIAN ENFORCER BUCKY (????? bucky isn’t even russian???) and the yoi thing I saw before had the japanese character being the leader of a russian mafia gang which is… like… guys it doesn’t happen it really doesn’t, and a lot of them re-use wrongly terminology taken from the godfather without context or knowing what the hell it means, and it’s always from the criminals’ pov and they’re somehow seen as criminals doing justice where the police can’t (???) and like… no. mafia bosses/enforcers/employees are bad people period, and at least here if you try to leave or repent they kill your family in retribution. like, not even ten years ago there’s been a woman who used to belong to a mafia family (or one colluded with the mafia) who testified and her entire town/family shunned her and she couldn’t take it anymore and… killed herself drinking acid if I don’t recall wrong. it’s not even special cases. this shit is not funny, it’s not cute, it’s not adorable and it’s not good fodder for your imagine your otp scenario (srsly I saw one like.. let me find it,

LIKE. just look at this shit. in a regular context, the enforcer goes to the show owner to force them to pay a monthly sum to their boss lest they destroy their shop and their lives and their family’s life never mind that mafia culture is deeply homophobic so the mafia enforcer flirting with the shopkeeper is like completely fucking out of the question. I mean, people here like to shit on the sopranos but that show was actually excellent representation of Horrid Criminals Who Were Never Supposed To Be Good People and the small arc that happened when one of tony’s friends turned out to be gay (closeted) was REALLY well done. btw, it ended that when they found out he was gay most of the crowd rejected him and thought badly of him until I think they killed him also for other reasons, but that spiraled from finding out he liked dick. and that’s american mafia that they actually based on well-done research of the culture in Italy it came from, I assure you that here it doesn’t work that differently. like. the shit above is so inaccurate and frankly offensive, it’s like… I get people romanticizing problematic stuff but the thing is that when you tell them that it’s actually offensive you get brushed off as ‘ah well you’re being too sensitive it’s just a word u__u’. now, I’m all for exploring shit we wouldn’t be into, but not like THAT, because that’s like mafia romantic comedy and that’s not how it works. now, you wanna do a fic where the mafia characters are deeply flawed and bad people and the police tries to catch them? fine, great, go ahead. you wanna do a fic where the enforcer above deals with dunno an entire life of internalized homophobia when he finds the shopkeeper attractive and feels conflicted over having to con money out of him and doing horrible shit for a living and maybe understanding that crime isn’t worth it and then he actually collaborates with the police and gets shit from about everyone he knows and loves for that? okay, awesome, go ahead. nothing bad in that.

but the shit above is not exploring things we wouldn’t/writing darkfic, it’s THINKING THAT A CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION WHICH IS STILL A THING IN OUR PART OF THE WORLD IS CUTE AND ADORABLE. and that only plays in their favor because it takes the bad aura out of the word and we really should not let that happen. like. that is what is bad about mafia aus and mafia discourse, that people don’t realize the mafia is alive and well and thriving and not a thing that doesn’t exist or a generic word for organized crime.

you wanna write the shit above? okay, CALL IT CRIME AU or mob au, not mafia au.

btw, add-on: idk if I mentioned it in the above post or not, but in case I didn’t, I said that people would balk at the idea of a mexican cartel au. sadly since then I’ve found out a fandom where not only there is one but it’s also extra cutesy and people apparently love it and it has a bunch of kudos/comments and idek I’m not even touching that with a ten foot pole but like… I’ve avoided it and everything that author wrote because to me it’s just… nope. like, nope. if you do mafia aus don’t make them fucking cute. (also: in the same fandom I had to mute a v. famous fanartist whose art I actually liked but did cutesy mafia aus and.. like… haahahhaahahahahaha nah sorry. can’t go there. nope.)

anonymous asked:

hi arc can i ask a question that seems a bit silly even as i write it? how do you keep being so brave about your fanwork? i used to post a lot of fic when i was younger before all the like holier than thou purity politics stuff happened. but the purity politics stuff sort of... made me scared to interact with fandom? like i want to write and post the fics i have ideas for but i'm SCARED and i don't really know how to?? stop being scared i guess? idk i can't really get my thoughts down now sorry

(scared anon) i just guess i was wondering if you had any advice on like pushing past that fear and just doing fanwork without being scared of how people might react?

Oh, honey.

Christ, lemme think about it….

1. I flat out do not follow any “main” tags. In RT, I never followed #ragehappy. In Borderlands, I never followed #rhack or anything. In HS, I don’t follow any ship tag. So I literally do not see most negativity. This is helpful because people like being dicks in tags and to put their shitty vagueblogging in there, but are often too fucking cowardly to come at you personally.

90% of the time, my awareness that people resent me for having “””impure””” popular fics comes from friends giving me a heads up that someone is talking shit. And when they do, I block that person.

2. Relevant to the above: It took me a long time to understand that people resent my fics being popular, not their actual subject matter. It’s a jealousy thing. I have written some filth that never got really popular, and no one gave a shit. It’s only when I start getting a lot of comments and kudos that suddenly I’m the Great Satan. Keeping in mind that bitches be jealous super helps.

Most recent example: people didn’t start to talk shit about ASAFAF until I started to see fanart based on the story. C’mon.

3. I genuinely believe in the diversity of stories we tell. Like, gushing gold is a great example of a fic I deeply enjoyed writing and sharing, but that I also knew was not for everyone. But it was for some people.

When you are writing a subject matter that you are passionate about, understand that other people are going to be passionate about it too. There are people who need difficult or uncomfortable stories told to affirm they aren’t alone, to help work through rare subject matter, to just enjoy in a world that doesn’t offer them much media.

No story is for everyone, but every story is for someone. Take pride in that.

4. No, really. Block people. Block anyone who makes you uncomfortable, and never look back.

I know it’s apparently a Thing, to block someone, then check in on them? I don’t do this. Once someone is blocked, they no longer exist in my universe.

5. Avoid younger fans. This obviously applies to older fen like me, but broadly speaking, this purity politics culture comes from younger fans attacking older fans, and a lack of understanding that Fandom is a place for a wide group of people with disparate experiences and interests.

Not all young fans are part of that, obviously, but… if someone young enjoys my stuff, I’m glad. I hope they like it. But I avoid deep discussion and interaction and attempts to befriend me, because I am 27 years old and write porn on the internet and shouldn’t be talking to young folks. If anyone doesn’t understand the logic of that, for my protection and for theirs, that is genuinely not my problem and I’m sure they’ll figure it out later.

Boundaries: they are important for adults as much as kids. Enforce them.

6. …

A lot of it is that I’ve been in fandom for over half my life now. I’ve seen a lot of shit. I’ve been through a lot of shit. (Anyone remember that pissant who tried to report me to the government because I told them to stop harassing me after +6 months of bullshit? lol) I’ve had great fandom experiences and I’ve had ones I would love to hit Undo on.

There are amazing people in fandom and there are fucking hilariously awful shitheads in fandom. The majority of people are decent, and they enjoy what I do, and if you start making content and sharing it, you will find people who enjoy what you do. There are people who follow me who shoot me out of the blue supportive Asks on bad days, who read my fic even when they don’t know the source material, who encouraged me to write my book and then bought the damn thing.

The purity police are scary, abusive fuckers. But they are not the majority, and the less you interact with them, the less they can affect you. They want an opponent, they want someone to fight so they can play victim, they want to be the Valiant Warrior Of Purity.

Ignore ‘em. Make them take their boring pedantic morality play elsewhere.

ETA: 7. Don’t fight the purity police and don’t try to convince them or win them over. It literally never works. These are people who are in a bad place and you cannot move them from that place. Only they can, when they grow the fuck up. Don’t do it. You will not win, you will expend energy on people who gobble it up to fuel their shitstirring and vagueblogging, and they will just know they can successfully antagonize you.

Take that annoyance and frustration. Channel it into writing more rad shit.

I hope this helps at all, anon. Remember, also, that the AO3 is your friend, and you can keep your tumblr and your AO3 a little bit separated. That can help.

Tadashi knew the day Hiro was born that it was his job to protect his little brother. But what is the line between protection and destruction? If he was being honest with himself, it didn’t matter. He’d kill for Hiro. Quite literally.

Words: 2,625 (or something i don’t remember but around there)

Warnings: Eventual hidashi and yandere!Tadashi as well as a screwed up Hiro, but in this chapter alone there’s vomiting and a car crash leading to death. I’ll add more as I go along!!

Okay! So this is my first fic on Tumblr and of Big Hero 6. ;v; I’m really hesitant in posting it because I’m a big baby who’d rather lurk but simultaneously wants to be noticed because everyone in this fandom is my senpai *lies down*

So, yeah.

Enjoy! (or not, idk :D;;;)

The Morality of Incest Shipping (More Specifically: Why It’s Okay To Ship Wincest)

This has been an ongoing debate on Tumblr for as long as I’ve been on here and shipping wincest, which is a long enough time to say that this post is way overdue. I just spur of the moment decided to outline some points that anti-wincest shippers make against wincest and it’s shippers and why these are invalid.

anonymous asked:

I'm a Bellarke shipper and have been since S1. I didn't mind CL and feel for the shippers that are heartbroken right now, yet I keep seeing posts telling me that I'm not a 'true Bellarke fan' if I reblog Bellarke stuff at the moment or if I'm excited for what might come for them this season. This is making me feel guilty and I'm not really sure that I should be. I'm not tagging my posts incorrectly or hating on anyone. I'm just enjoying what I enjoy. What are your thoughts on that?

Well, hi there anon! I am so glad you brought this up because I have been seeing this too and I have Thoughts.

(I am also pulling in all of this ‘we must get the show cancelled/you are a bad person if you still support it’ nonsense because I have had enough)

To everyone saying it is disrespectful to support The 100/bellarke after 3x07:

There is a massive difference between celebrating something you love and being an asshole and as far as I’m concerned, if you’re tagging your shit appropriately, you do you. Put your shipper love in the ship tag, put your hate in the anti tags. It’s fucking simple.

Personally? I still love The 100. I still love Bellarke. I am actively rooting for them to get together. I want them to make out so bad it burns. No one is going to shame me for that. While I haven’t been here since the beginning, I have been here since season 2 shipping the shit out of them long before CL appeared on the horizon and that hasn’t changed and I’m not going to pretend it did.

I feel for the CL/L fandom, I really do. But at the same time, people knew this was going to happen. I’m sorry if it was a shock to you but there is such a thing as denial (which I totally understand, do not talk to me about Lincoln I will scream HE’S GOING TO BE FINE HE’S JUST GOING TO TAKE A NAP at you until you go away, but I also will not cry MY GOD WE WERE TOTALLY MISLEAD after whatever happens happens because hello, the signs are all there).

I’m sorry if you had a harsh awakening to the fact that JR is, in all likelihood, a massive asshole. I’d like to direct you to the people who have been in this fandom since season one, they have bullet lists of reasons and supporting evidence and would love to rage with you about it. This is not news. You can love a thing without supporting everything about it including the showrunner. You can love a thing in spite of its showrunner and want to support ALL OF THE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE INVOLVED IN MAKING A SHOW. JR is not The 100 and by demanding it get cancelled solely because of him you’re in effect demanding to take work away from other people because he is not the entire fucking show.

I’m sorry if you feel like the show has taken away your representation and you can no longer support it. I’m not going to say I don’t think JR did L fans incredibly dirty bc that would be a lie. But I am floored by all of this ‘The 100 killed off it’s LGBTIA+ rep’ bullshit. Let me please direct your attention to Clarke Griffin, the BISEXUAL main character (among others and not to mention all of the other communities who find representation on this show). I’m sorry if L was your representation but she wasn’t mine and she wasn’t many others’ and please please please stop perpetuating the idea that she was the be all end all for all the letters in the queer spectrum and representation in general (looking at you ‘Bellamy is no one’s representation’ anon you asshole) because that’s incredibly fucking shitty and not true.

I don’t want the show to end. It has so much going for it that I love and I want it to stick around. And finally, this is personal and selfish but I want the fucking bellarke tag back. It used to be my happy place and I haven’t gone in it for months.

So, basically, do not be ashamed to love and support Bellarke. Reblog to your heart’s content, post spec, post meta, post fic, celebrate the fuck out of your ship. Idk about you but my love for bellarke had nothing to do with my feelings for CL and that hasn’t changed. Let’s make the bellarke tag the wonderful place it was back in the beginning.

tl;dr: don’t be a fucking asshole, don’t shame people for liking things, don’t demand that every person share your views and act accordingly. If you want to hate, go ahead and hate but don’t expect everyone else to. Now excuse me, I’m going to go back to reblogging the fuck out of every bellarke gifset that gives me feelings and taking that tag back because I love what I love. You do you.

Fandom and Rachel Duncan

aka: time for charlotte to make everyone mad again. (i mean, hopefully not. if anyone disagrees, i’m interested to hear your take!) thanks to cummingftleaf for talking all this out with me yesterday.

cw: discussion of abuse, brief rape mention

So there have been a lot of discussions of how to treat Rachel in this fandom. I accidentally started one much larger than I intended a few months ago after making a (probably poorly thought out) post that ended with something like “Rachel Duncan has forged herself into a blade; please stop calling her your baby.” Some people reacted really angrily to that, and there has been a lot of discussion over the past few months that has gotten me thinking about the ways in which I treat her as a character. But some specific fandom ways of talking about Rachel have never stopped bothering me, and I think I finally figured out why.
