From Izumi-ku, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. After attending Sendai Municipal Nanakita Elementary School, Sendai Municipal Nanakita Junior High School, Tohoku High School, he now attends to Waseda and studies Human Informatics and Cognitive Science (E school). His blood type is B. He was named by his father, and his name means a bowstring which is pulled tight, symbolizing confidence, strength and straightness, wanting him to live a simple life, but be dignified, powerful and graceful. His favorite artists are Porno Graffiti, Hi-Fi Camp (A band from his home city Sendai), BUMP OF CHICKEN, The Sketchbook, etc. He always has earphones around so he could listen to music anytime, and collects them. He is a fan of the baseball team Hiroshima Toyo Carp, and his favorite player is Kenta Maeda.
The figure skaters he respect are Evgeni Plushenko, Johnny Weir, and Shizuka Arakawa. Shizuka Arakawa and him have raised up at the same rink, Tohoku High School, Waseda University, and have a relationship as Senpai - Kouhai (Senior - Junior). He also has put lay-back Ina Bauer in his program, which Arakawa was good at. He has written about Plushenko in his autobiography “Blue Flames”. After seeing him perform at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 when he was 7, he was so amazed he imitated Plushenko’s mushroom cut hair. He’s seen his video many times and learned new tricks, and the reason why he started to do the Biellmann spin was because Plushenko had did it. For a time, he had to stop doing it for his health, but he now is doing it again, though his coach says that it would be a burden to his body and he shouldn’t do it anymore. In 2012, when Plushenko was asked about a rival in Japan, Yuzuru Hanyu, he answered “He’s a very good skater, and an artist, and has great jumps. He reminds me of when I was young. He’s still 17, but I think he’s number one.” At the interviews in 2009 at an ice show and a 2013 interview he has remarked well about him. At an interview at the Sochi Olympics, he has said “I could have been a hero of him, but he’s my hero now.”. After Yuzuru’s free program, he has tweeted “You’re my idol. You did well. He’s a genius” and praised Yuzuru.
