ic memories

The Jackals have been finding ancient stone tablets etched in runes, as well as a large chocobo statue carved from jade, for well over a cycle now. Hidden deep in ruins, each tablet, once translated, gave them clues as to where the next one could be found and how to defeat the traps therein. Tonight, they ventured forth with a recently translated tablet to Coerthas Central Highlands.

Verdant hills and leaves of green,
Turn to cold and barren misery.
Frozen roads will lead you keen,
But ware the light of memory.
Ice steadfast in burning heat,
Gives way at your sacrifice.
Awaken fields of golden wheat,
With all death comes new life.

Glowing orbs of light emitted shocking pulses and filled their minds with haunting memories not their own, whilst an enormous ice wall needed to be gifted a bloody sacrifice before it allowed them to pass. In the end, a seed from the nearby blooming flowers brought forth treasure, but vegetation grew at an alarming rate until the Jackals were forced to retreat.

Who knows what the next entry in the Legend of the Jade Chocobo will reveal?

History of YOI fandom

As a YOI fandom grandparent, I felt it was my duty to write out all the fandom explosions for the newer fans who weren’t there to witness the big bang and gradual week-by-week creation of this universe. All the arguments, people blowing things out of proportion, blaming characters, death theories, awesome fans clearing up miscommunications, YOI breaking the internet…

This isn’t a post to call out specific people on their arguments and theories - I’ll stay respectfully away from restarting flames and picking fights, thankyouverymuch. Rather, this is an overview of the topics and conflicting views that swept across hundreds and thousands of people and prompted strong reactions. I’m doing this now, because I know that 6 months later, 1 year later, 3 years later, etc. there will be new fans who will have many of the same exact arguments. We’ve been there and done that. I see fans now who say things without knowing where the spelling/quote comes from, or who don’t realize how much has changed, or don’t know why there are certain perceptions of characters. So here’s a little bit of passing down history.

I also don’t want to forget the crazy ride this was. Laugh with me at the silly theories; smile with me at how deeply YOI has impacted our lives.
For those of us old-timers, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Remember when…

(Large arguments will be italicized or bold. Special thanks to @sachiro for reminding me of a bunch of stuff I missed, and looking over the draft in its various stages of being written and edited.)

  • Idea that there would be a love triangle (Yuri P.–Yuri K.–Victor)
  • Some fans started spelling Yuri Katsuki with two “u” in order to tell them apart.
  • Victuri ship name created for Victor x Yuri K. (in a comment to the PV)
  • The title
    • “lol ‘Yuri’ on Ice? Where are all the lesbians?”
    • “When it said Yuri on Ice, I thought we would get girls. Y’know what I mean?”
    • “Yuri on Ice? More like Yaoi on Ice! amiright?”
    • etc.
  • J.J. misspelling (English spelling “Jean Jack” instead of French Canadian “Jean-Jacques”)
    • you can see the remnants of this in the audience banners during the episodes, but it was corrected to “Jean-Jacques” on the official website and the in-show text
  • Phichit x Seung-gil ship created (there was more art for this than for Victor x Yuuri)

Episode 1

  • Victor vs. Viktor spelling arguments
    • Although “Victor” is the official spelling and seen in-show, people argued that the creators are wrong and that we fans know better than them about Russian culture - thus the “Viktor” spelling was born.
    • People argued back that spelling is subjective and you can spell a name multiple ways and still be correct - thus transliterating his Russian name into English as “Victor” would be just as acceptable.
    • The YOI wiki held fast for a time on using official spellings and information from the official website, but the transition of power led to a new team that started using agreed-upon info rather than solely using official info. “Viktor” replaced “Victor” on the website.
      • this change from “Victor” to “Viktor” on the wiki happened around episode 2~3, but the arguments were in the page comments since episode 1 – with moderators explaining their reasoning with sticking to official sources.
  • Victor is a flirtatious over-the-top character who will seduce Yuuri
  • Victor is the overwhelming seme and Yuuri is the shy whimpering uke.

I’m not saying this show doesn’t play with your emotions, because it does, and good TV shows always do, but that doesn’t mean the characters don’t mean something

I came across this short documentary in an ice show and through this, we can see how much the disaster affected Yuzu (this cut is from yusu01207′s video, thank you so much for uploading it)

Earlier part for context:

He went to Ishinomaki, Miyagi (an area that was hit really hard in 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami) in June 2014 to thank the junior high schoolers there for their support for him during Sochi.

Narr: He decided to go there after much hesitation

Y: I was wondering if I should go. I’ve been thinking a lot whether anything would change if I go. It feels like (going) would be trampling all over people’s feelings.

Narr: His sensitive heart continues to shake/waver

[He went to a hill where you can see how the disaster destroyed a very big area where there used to be many houses and people.]

Y: I wonder if they made it up this far (to the hill to escape)…

Rough translation of this cut:

[talking with local people who recognized him]

Woman: You look great now that I see in person, your face is so small, and you look really smart….

Man: So you get recognized everywhere you go?

Yuzu: Just recently….*laughs*

Man: Everything, from my wife, my house, my dog, to my cabin, prefab,… everything and everyone were washed away, there was nothing left.

Woman: Even his wife were washed away…

Narr: the harsh reality of Ishinomaki, the harsh reality of the earthquake disaster

Woman: Thank you very much!

Man: Please keep doing your best! I will be watching you from TV.

Yuzu: Thank you very much! (after parting with them) It’s heart-breaking, so painful! Though I’m happy that (my performances) pleased them, afterall, it’s hard/painful! Though they are smiling right now, to come this far, how much troubles they had to suffer through,… when I think about it, I feel so guilty *laughs* This is hard, so painful, it’s so painful I tell you *laughing while holding his chest and wiping his nose*

[when he walked down the path where many houses were washed away; it is reported that 3529 people died and 436 are still missing]

Yuzu: When I think that there used be real houses here, at night everyone slept here, the weight of those numbers is just… (too much)

Personally this is just so heartbreaking for me. Also, you can see how hard it is for Yuzuru, his body language clearly showed he was suffering: he keeps blinking, wiping his nose, and tried to laugh it off while holding his chest.

Still, the latter part of the video is actually much more positive so if please watch more of it in the link guys!

[edit] I made some correction in the translation. Thank you so much to @tadakixd for pointing out my mistakes. Please message me if you guys see any mistake in this as well, mistakes are a part of learning afterall :D

so, when i was a kid, i absolutely loved jrpgs. and, as it tends to happen, i naturally gravitated towards the final fantasy series. i simply adored it.

the thing is, though: i never liked level grinding. ever. which is kind of ironic, considering that jrpg’s are famous for that, but, yeah. the final fantasy games were definitely more forgiving than, say, the dragon quest games, but still, i’ve always seen level grinding as repetitive and utterly boring, especially as a kid.

fortunately, i always played those games with my brother, who, in fact, actually likes level grinding and all that jazz. he always made a point in getting the most powerful secret items, defeat bonus bosses, reach the full potential of a character of his choice. so, i never had to worry much about that while playing, because i knew that my brother would back me up in the boring bits, since he liked that, and soon i would be able to return to the juicy stuff in peace.

except that when i started playing final fantasy 5, my brother had no interest in the game. at all. i still really wanted to play it, so i was left alone to do the boring stuff. but i was a lazy ass 8 year old, so i did the barest of the barest minimum, only just enough to get by the bosses.

but more often than not, it was not enough. i would get my ass handed to me multiple times, but i still refused to grind and pulled desperate strategies out of my ass to win.

anyway, this is all to say that i reached the final boss of final fantasy 5 with a party all at level 25-30, much to my brother’s horror.

Then & Now // redbubble

(I haven’t done anything like this since 2010… )

anonymous asked:

tbh i actually heard that a couple of times about Danny Phantom, but never really understood it. Then again, I'm the yes-man trashcan that liked the show's sappy ending as a kid and it wasn't until 10(?) years later did i hear other people complain about it (then again, i haven't rewatched it as an adult - maybe i should after finals). Could you elaborate on the lost potential? i'd honestly love to see your thoughts.

i haven’t watched the show in a good while, too, but yeah. i share the same opinion as many: the concept was great, the execution lacked.

i mean, the story of a half human half ghost boy leading a double life and hiding his secret identity from his parents, who are die hard ghost hunters? good. feels familiar enough to fit the classic superhero stories, but it’s also bizarre enough to be something quite fresh and unique.

i know a lot of people say things started to go downhill on the last season, and while i can see that, my opinion is that the show was never quite great to begin with. i mean, it was good, i enjoyed it a lot as a kid, but i always felt like something was missing, you know? the elements were all there and i appreciated them, but overall, they didn’t work for me.

and personally, i feel that it was because hartman’s style didn’t quite fit the show. and i mean both his art and writing style. i know, it’s ironic to say that, considering that it’s his fucking show, but, yeah, it’s how i feel.

i think his style works very well with shows like fairly odd parents, that are extremely episodic by nature, and very cute and funny. danny phantom, on the other hand, was supposed to be more like a superhero story, but it was still given a fop-like treatment, and that ultimately severed the show’s potential, imo.

which isn’t to say that it needed to be gritty and edgy, no. silliness is always a nice and even essential part of superhero stories, especially ones that are centered around teenagers. no, my issue with it is that it seems very… sitcom-y? both the pacing and the development of the plot. which is not a bad thing on it’s own, but for a show with a premise like danny phantom’s, it’s not the best approach, imo.
