Yuri!!!on Ice officially became the First Anime Ever That Isn’t Labeled as Yaoi/Shouen Ai but has a Gay Couple in it.
Thank You Studio Mappa for this.
Let’s hope your bravery will reach other studios that may in the future represent more Same Sex Couples
Are you excited about the m|m representation in YOI without it being labeled yaoi/BL?
Do you think this is the first time it’s ever been done in recent anime history?
I know Yuri on Ice!!! is the first to do it in the sports anime sphere. But in all this excitement about YOI, I really wanted to give a shoutout to a series that is still very freaking dear to my heart. No.6 is m|m representation done SO right. It’s a sci-fi anime that takes place in a dystopian future where two boys try to desperately survive, and fall deeply in love with each other in the process. Heart-wrenching, profound, serious, real, and passionate—this series was so damn ground breaking in every way possible. I suggest you see it if you haven’t, and if you fall as in love with it as I did, make sure to read the original light novels the anime adapted!
Follow Victor Nikiforov’s epic journey in finding his one true love, starting from a drunken request to love on ice. For the first time, he shares his life changing moments with the world, his heart revealed. A history maker.
Victor and Yuri are preparing for the Grand Prix series. As Victor teaches and advices Yuri day by day, he notices, that no matter what, the state Yuri is in right now, he will not be able to win. Yuris performance is perfect yet it is still lacking something…this something…will Victor be able to discover it and how will it influence Yuris performance? Will everything turn out well, or will Victor and Yuri have to face a situation, neither of them did expect to happen. Will it put them both for a choice, whether to go on and risk everything, or to be satisfied with how things are and try their best to make sure things won’t become worse…
It’s all been happening so fast. Yuuri breezed through the Four Continents and the World Championships, staking his claim on gold for both events. It’s the night of the exhibition gala and he and Viktor have quite the surprise planned for the audience.
2011-2015 Japanese National Championships: Men’s Retrospective
Everyone watch this. It’s the perfect summary of what happened in the men’s field since 2011:
2011: Daisuke Takahashi lands a surprise quad in his SP and wins; 17 year old Yuzuru Hanyu makes the podium for the first time and 14 year old Shoma Uno competes at his first senior Nationals
2012: Yuzuru Hanyu beats an almost perfect Daisuke Takahashi for his first National title
2013: The toughest competition (#bloodbath) in history. Six men are trying to make it to the Olympics.Tatsuki Machida shines, Yuzuru Hanyu wins his second title while Daisuke Takahashi and Nobunari Oda compete at their last Nationals. Machida, Hanyu and Takahashi are chosen as the representatives for the Sochi Olympics
2014: The abrupt and emotion filled retirement of Tatsuki Machida; Daisuke Takahashi comments: “I was shocked [by his retirement] because I thought he would go on to excel.”
2015: Yuzuru Hanyu wins his 4th consecutive National title
Okay, so I’ve been thinking about the results of the Grand Prix Final and I think we can already assume that the first two places will be taken by
1. Yuuri 2. Yurio
(Just an assumption, we can leave the discussion on that for a later time.)
But what about third place?
Will it be Phichit, winning glory for Thailand for the first time in history?
Will it be Otabek, Yurio’s new boyfriend who’s had a really good season and seems to have likely chances of winning?
Will it be Chris, a long-time experienced skater who’s also been doing well and is known to reach his ‘peak’ later in the season? (take that ‘peak’ as you will)
I can tell you that it won’t be JJ because this season’s been going too well for him and something’s gonna have to go badly.
I want to say it’ll be Chris because he’s been on the podium for the past few years, but then there’s also Phichit who’s finally showing the world his true potential and it seems like Otabek has fought long and hard and he must also be relevant as more than just Yurio’s friend.
Do you see how difficult it is to decide? They all have fair chances, plot-wise!
this is the first time i translated a song into ASL. im an ASL II student and i submitted this song to my professor for my final which I got a 90 for. that is the highest grade I have ever gotten in that class because my prof is a tough grader. because of yoi im happier and getting better grades! what kind of magic?????
the different signs i use for “born to make history” is -live to set a new record -live to influence everyone -live to become famous -live to be remembered -live to surprise the world
Hi, I need some good vibes right now haha, I turned 21 Monday and my friends made me some really really cool fanarts of Yuri on ice yeah (and I’ll be in a very cool fanzine too @born-to-make-history-zine so happy to be in it)
And also a little drawing to make my coming out as a proud Hufflepuff ! and my patronus a little weasel. I have a lot to do with school, my next short film etc…
Sometimes I wish I had more time, or draw faster.
The morning of my birthday was the first snowfall of the season in Paris, so I felt lucky.
And a lot of people asked me recently if I had a store, AND YES I have one, on Redbubble, BUT i don’t really like the platform. SO I’m really planning to open a tictail to preoders some prints of my illustrations/fanarts/inktobers/originals maybe.
Thank’s for your patience (and if you’re interested please send me a message or just a sign, it helps a lot ;) for the motivation ! )
Continuing from my last post and staying on the topic of seiyuus’ BL history, I’d like to mention 2 particularly interesting cases from Yuri!!! on Ice.
So first we have this unfortunate skater who ejaculates at the touch of the ice
and who has uttered out some of the most inappropriate (and frankly uncomfortable) noises and words ever in the history of mainstream non-BL anime. Turns out his voice actor has had a long and sturdy relationship with making BLCDs and is probably one of the most recognisable seme voies that any avid fan of the medium would have come across at some point (at least around the time when he was still active in the market). As someone who has listened to more than one BLCD starring Yasumoto Hiroki, I stg every single time Chris makes his “Ikuzou~~” noise I just can’t help but burst out laughing because never has the thought of being able to hear such risque sounds, which are usually associated with a niche market, in an anime at this level of exposure occurred to me before. And yet here we are. I guess they really meant to “make history” the pun is already so tired by now but I can’t stop myself
Another rather ridiculous and over-the-top character from the show I want to bring up is this drama-queen
who did not exactly intrigue my interest in him or his back story, which I know is not a popular opinion in the fandom, but meh. What I do care about, though, is the fact that the voice behind him is Hatano Wataru, who somehow is even more prominent than Angen in the BL industry and is known for his incredible versatility. He has delivered consistent performance after performance, and imo Waccha is among the only few seiyuus who could believably act as both an uke and a seme without noticeable effort, but no matter what role is thrown his way you can always count on his dedication and passion and responsibility for his job, especially when he always sounds really enthusiastic in his BLCDs too lol (if you know what I mean ;) )
Which is a shame because he doesn’t get to showcase his talent in more prominent anime roles very often, and for the ones that he does get, I wish they could have been a taaad bit more interesting or likeable so that both his fan base and resume repertoire could have a chance to expand. But still, I’m glad his singing career seems to have taken off at a steady pace over the years and you could find his singing right in the anime! You know that YOLO ending you’ve been jamming to since episode 1, the one you never skip despite how much you want to get right to the preview of the next episode?
Yeah that’s right, you’ve been listening to Georgi’s singing voice this whole time, and you’re welcome for that knowledge now :D
I find it interesting to compare these two seiyuus’ deliveries with those from the rest of the YoI cast, some of whom has never been involved with more mature and sexual lines of work. When you think of Yuuri (Tosshi), angry Yuri (Ucchi), Phichit (OnoKen) or Minami (Ayumu), your brain doesn’t immediately draw the connection between them and erotic scenarios, does it? Well a) these seiyuus are contracted with talent agencies that don’t venture out to the BL industry, and b) your sentiment is also probably formed due to casting decisions from the directors and producers, who have without a doubt nailed it this time, and chosen the perfect seiyuus for both categories: innocent, naive balls of sunshine AND sultry, mature divas on ice like the two mentioned above. And of course we can’t forget our bombshell of a hunk who is in another league of charisma and charm, who has a killer voice from a stellar seiyuu and oozes out sex appeal every time he appears on screen and yet still has a delicate and sophisticated side to him
But that’s enough ranting for now. Viktor’s beauty is not a topic I could justify in just a few lines and pics; it needs its own blog examining every single scene and look of his in details, ie. I should not go there here. This post has got long enough as it is, so I’m just going to leave you with this celebratory pic amid the Viktuuri of the fandom (get it?.. Vikturi.. victory…. No?….. Yeahh I’ll let myself out) and hopefully will tune in again after some distant days
Hello everyone! First of all, I apologize that my music blog has been lacking updates; I have been working on music but slow on the uploading part. I’m aiming to get some uploaded this week. In the mean time, because I really love this series, I hope you enjoy my cover of History Maker from Yuri!!! On Ice.
Since I’ve read so many times about these two anime are the first with same sex couple, I want to say that:
Yes, No.6 is the first in the anime’s history with gay ship.
Yes, NezuShi is canon.
Yes, Yuri on Ice is the first SPORT anime with gay ship canon.
Yes, Victuri is canon.
What it’s extraordinary in Victuri/Yuri on Ice?
1. Yuri on Ice’s surroundings are “real”, well it’s a sport anime so it’s given. (Except for KnB or PoT(anime) where sometimes irrational moves happen lol - I love all the spokon, don’t hate me but admit it there’s “magic”)
While NezuShi/No.6 is set in a perfect-created/invented city, so as it is labeled is a science fiction.
So we can say Victuri is in this society of reality that normally is surprised by gay couples, but not in Yuri on Ice because it’s treated like normal?
Yes, it would be considered even in No.6 but the different surroundings makes YoI greater.
2. In YoI, Victor and Yuri are sportsmen, so even if their bond is justified as coach-student or two skaters who both loves skating, their relationship is more than that as it was shown in the last episode.
In No.6, Nezumi fell in love with Shion immediately when he shouted, and then Shion fell in love too with Nezumi. Their relationship is a bit for survival or is like it seems to me. I know there’s so much to say about No.6, I’ve seen anime and read manga, so it’s not like I don’t know what I’m talking about but they were together to survive and to fight then No.6 so they got to know each other and lived together like a real couple. I think in these situations it happens be in love with your important person.
Two different anime, two different genres, two different relationships.
In a chronological view, yes, the first is No.6 (labeled as Science fiction and dystopia - italian wiki) but if we want to make it in a “reality context” then the first is Yuri on Ice (labeled as Sport - italian wiki).
Both anime are so good, and not only for the ships but even for the plots so watch both~!
Okay, so I’ve
just gotten up of my bed to write this, so if you find some incoherence, well,
I’m sorry. I still have my eyes foggy.
Okay so let’s
start talking about Yuri on ICE. The song, not the anime. When this song is
referred in the show, every time they say it’s Yuuri’s history, how he felt
alone at first but little by little he begins to find love around him and how
that affects him. More exactly, it talks about how Yuuri changed when Viktor
came to his life. (You might like to look for the song and listen to it while
you read this. You can experience it better that way. That’s what I’m doing rn)
And what I’ve
noticed is that if we put the song alongside the episodes, they fit perfectly. At
first, we have Yuuri at his lowest point of his life, when everything looked
grey and depressing, and when he desperately needed someone to hold onto. That is
can hear the song change subtly, and the story keeps going, at how he’s
surprised to find Viktor, and the song explains the beginning of their
relationship, and how, despite Viktor not being the best of coaches, he tries
for Yuuri. He messes up, but he keeps on fighting for him, and we can see how
the love they have for each other increases with the crescendo. That’s episode
2 to 7 before he performs Yuri on Ice.
music suddenly changes, and the crescendo stops to cue in a calming melody. That
represents when he performed Yuri on ICE. When everything fell in place with
such clarity and Yuuri could only think of Viktor and Viktor alone, and how he
realized his love for him and let it finally show with his body.
Then we get
to another crescendo, that is how their relationship gets closer and closer,
despite everything in their way. How they belong to each other alone, and their
love is the most important thing between them, and they won’t let anyone be in
their way. You can feel the rush, the exhilaration as the music goes by, the
thrill of discovering every day more things of the person you love,.
another calm part, when it shows how Yuuri feels about Viktor. How his mere
presence is calming, how he knows he can overcome anything when he has him by
his side. We can also interpret it like the end of episode 9, when Yuuri learns
that, after all Viktor feels the same way as he does.
another crescendo, and we reach Barcelona, and how it seems like their love can’t
be deeper than what we see. We can
feel how they feel for each other, how they would sacrifice anything for the
And then we
reach to the end. People may be wondering why Yuuri hasn’t performed this song
perfectly in any of their competitions, but that’s because his story hasn’t ended yet. Their story wasn’t finished in episode
7, their story wasn’t finished in episode 9. The peak will come at episode 12, the
last performance for the GPF. I don’t know how the competition will end, and I’m
not exactly bothered by it either. But what I need to see is Yuuri finishing
his performance perfectly, because it shows his life, his story all this time.
The end is
calming, sweet, and you can feel so much love in it, and I really believe that
that’s how this anime is going to end. Viktor and Yuuri will be alright,
because their song already told us.
be okay. More than okay.
all, I believe. Thank you for reading my rant about Yuri!!! On Ice, I very much
appreciate it. And don’t hesitate telling me your thoughts about it.
If you are one of the people talking about how the YOI fandom should “calm down, it’s just an anime”, fuck you. I will not calm down, not only is this the first time a ship of mine has been actually shown as canon, but it also makes a mark for me because I’ve only seen canon gay relationships in anime in yaoi, but this is a sports anime! Yuri!!! on Ice is literally making history! Anime history, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less important!
Even though they’re fictional characters, you can just see the love and passion in their eyes. And oh my god. I have never fangirled over a BL ship before. Until now, I’ve always fangirled over GL ships. History was made. I fangirled over a BL ship for the first time. Good job Yuri On Ice. Good job. Such a beautiful Anime.
Summary: A look at life through the eyes of Otabek Altin from his first love to his last love and all the trials between.
*Option D. I’d say it’s also Option A because Otabek is one of my favorite characters, but I have so many favorites characters. How am I supposed to pick just one? So difficult. Also, no dialogue returns. Enjoy!
