The Lost City of Z (2016)

I hope The Lost City of Z gets the attention it deserves. It’s one of the biggest, and most pleasant surprises 2017′s offered so far.

Based on true events, Charlie Hunnam plays British explorer Percy Fawcett who, after finding the origin of the Heath River in 1910, becomes obsessed with unearthing an ancient, lost city deep in the Amazon. No amount of ridicule, failure, or personal hardship manages to shoo away the obsession he calls “Zed”.

The film benefits immensely from Charlie Hunnam. I’ve liked him before (in Pacific Rim for example), but he’s never shined like he does here. Normally, you’d join the ones who mock his obsession, but as a professional, forward-thinking (in his views of wildlife, women and aboriginals) and determined explorer that is also intelligent, resourceful and brave, Fawcett is so compelling you cheer him on all the way, even when you start to doubt the city’s existence. The rest of the cast shines as well. Robert Pattinson is unrecognizable as Percy’s first-hand man Henry Costlin, Sienna Miller as Percy’s wife Nina has many good moments to herself (something I did not expect out of a film that features mostly all-male explorations teams in the jungle) and Tom Holland as Percy’s son Jack also fairs very well.

This film has a special quality. I’m going to credit writer/director James Gray, who adapts the story from the book by David Grann. It immerses you so perfectly in the mindset of Fawcett that whenever you’re not in the jungle, it feels alien. You crave that green foliage. When people are standing around being polite, discussing whether or not they should go back to the jungle you want to scream out loud so they know how important this trip is! When they do you’re quickly reminded of how dangerous the endeavor is. Today, the jungle is seen as a beautiful place, a treasure to be preserved. Back then, it was a place crawling with horrifying beasts, cannibals, diseases, and innumerable kinds of death. In this film, it’s both. I was genuinely terrified at numerous points, but no matter what I kept wanting Fawcett to return. You’re pulled in both directions and I loved it. The story is so well paced and intriguing you won’t even notice the 140-minute running time until it’s all over.

There are so many good moments in The Lost City of Z that it’d take too long to enumerate them all. Angus Macfadyen as explorer James Murray is a great character. He adds so much to the story. And the ending is absolutely perfect. It wraps up the story and compels you to dig for more. It creates an obsession within you. The direction, the cinematography, the mood and the performances, particularly from Charlie Hunnam, make The Lost City of Z well worth your time.
