#aesthetic

I’m crocheting a scarf. Two scarves, actually. One’s pastel baby colors: blue, pink, yellow, and white. The other one is the one in the picture above. I chose the first ball of yarn because it was soft and pretty. I chose the second because it looked like a solarpunk color scheme.

Look, the clothing/fashion industry has problems. Cheap clothes rely on underpaid, sometimes underage workers. Fashion itself sells an image of very white, very thin beauty. It would be very much within the solarpunk ideal to dismantle this industry by encouraging  homemade clothes and style.

Yet this doesn’t seem to be the reason we do it.

I’m not shaming people who are just trying to enjoy designing and making nice clothes. Nearly everything is problematic and nobody can fight all the battles all the time. And as T. X. Watson says, there’s no proper way to do solarpunk.

I bring this topic up because it illustrates the line between solarpunk-as-aesthetic and solarpunk-as-political-movement, and each influences the other.

One aspect of DIY is that it empowers individuals. Their creations are unique to the producer. Ideally, this means there is no pressure on the designer to make something cheap and fast, nor on the wearer to fit a premade category in order to buy products.

In this way, celebrating DIY fashion is a positive form of protest. It creates a counter-culture, one that fits squarely within the solarpunk ideal.

something paradise

cs au. ‘there’s something about breaking an engagement and leaving the man you thought you were going to spend the rest of your life with and finding yourself roommate-ing with the man who’s loved you through years and boyfriends and breakups and uncertainties that makes a person a little weepy, a little off balance, a little unsure.’

(i’ve been working on this for at least six weeks, and it’s finally, finally finished, and i’m something like pleased with it. (thanks to swallowedsong for looking over it and helping me and stuff.) so, enjoy whatever this is. (really long, among other things. just a head’s up.)

She leaves him on a Tuesday.

Packs up her share of the apartment instead of going to work, keeps Henry home from school so he can help. Wraps picture frames in scarves and sweaters, shoves books and DVDs into boxes, throws pots and pans and casserole dishes into the back seat. One trip to unload these small bits, another for Henry’s bed and dresser and nightstand.

It takes just over 6 hours to remove every trace of them from this apartment that was supposed to be theirs and is now just his, but she doesn’t cry as she sweeps through one last time. As she takes her key off the chain, locking the door behind her and slipping it underneath. She doesn’t feel broken or empty. Isn’t sure what it is pulsing through her, something that tastes like regret or maybe failure.

“Sorry, kid,” she says, eyes still dry, once they reach the car. He just shrugs. Smiles a small, sad thing.

            “It’s okay.”

            It’s not.

            But maybe it will be.

Dedicating my Melanin Monday post to my lovely great grandma Annye.

Just looking at the first picture, know exactly where I get my “shade” from lmao. But, besides the shade, she’s the most understanding, encouraging, hard working woman ever. She’s always styling with her hats and scarves & still dresses to impress. My favorite lines she always says that made a big impact on my life is “you do right because it’s right to do right” and “treat others how you’d like to be treated.” She’s 82 years young, still keeping busy & constantly helping people. Although we may have our disagreements at times, she’s really helped make me become the woman I am today & for that, I’m forever grateful. (she swears I’m always trying take pictures of her for a bad reason, so these were taken off guard lmao) bonitaapplebelle

I was looking at a Pinterest page of “blanket scarves” and most of the models were wearing riding boots, a puffy vest, and a giant plaid scarf while holding a coffee in one hand and carrying a giant purse off of their arm.  You know exactly what I’m talking about.

Anyways, as I’m scrolling through and rolling my eyes and thinking, “ugh the basic girl fall uniform is too real” Patrick points at my screen and says, “Look at all those pictures of my mommy.”  So…
