Yo, so about that post I just reblogged, about Voldemort in other languages (x) - I actually know a bit about that, but it was a chat post, so I couldn’t add on to it!

  • Of course, in English, “Tom Marvolo Riddle” becomes “I am Lord Voldemort”.
  • Likewise, in Spanish, they have the slightly clunky looking “Tom Sorvolo Ryddle” for “Soy Lord Voldemort”.
  • In German, there’s “Tom Vorlost Riddle” for “Ist Lord Riddle”.
  • In Iceland, “Trevor Delgome” becomes “Eg er Voldemort” - interestingly enough, the full name is still “Trevor Marvolo Delgome”, but the middle name is not included for the anagram.
  • In Norway, “Tom Dredolo Venster” becomes “Voldemort den store”, which means not “I am Lord Voldemort”, but rather the more egotistical “Voldemort the Great”.
  • In an odd linguistic move, the Swedish version has “Tom Gus Mervolo Dolder” rearrange itself into “Ego sum Lord Voldemort”, which is not Swedish, but Latin for “I am Lord Voldemort”.
  • And in my favorite case, in France, “Tom Elvis Jedusor” becomes “Je suis Voldemort”, which is, of course, “I am Voldemort”. While the translation is nothing special, the last name “Jedusor” is phonetically similar with the phrases “jet du sort”, a blow with a spell, or “jeu du sort”, a game of spells. Plus, the name has “Elvis” in it, so that’s cool.
