I would LOVE to know what you think are the best, high quality, in-character, well-written fics out there. Other than LMAL and Feniknussen (too lazy to look up how to spell that author). I'm in desperate need of something incredible to read!!

Girl, I know that feel! Sometimes you just need a really good fic to read.

I’m happy to tell you about my go-to fics, but I get the feeling you’ve probably read (or heard of) most of them already. ^^; Hopefully there’ll be one or two in here that are new to you. (Also, please note that my InuKag bias is really obvious with this list, because they’re all InuKag-oriented.)

  • Surprising absolutely no one, I must lead off with Sachi by Quillwing717. It’s still the best fanfic I’ve ever read. The quality of the writing is A++, the characterization is on point, and the slow burn is fucking phenomenal. Waiting on a Wish is also amazing, and I reread that one pretty frequently. She’s also written a one-shot called Holding Them that is super sweet and lovely.
  • Nice Things by Bread Head is a oneshot I recently found that blew me away. Inuyasha and Kagome are very, very in-character, and the whole piece is bittersweet and adorable. (The author also has a multi-chapter fic, In the Shade of the Sacred Tree, that you might want to check out; the writing is excellent, but I’ll admit that I bailed on it because it made me too sad. But if you’re in the mood for sad, that should really hit the spot.)
  • Basically anything written by Reinamy will be wonderful, but I particularly love Mistletoe Tales and Speed Dating for Dummies. This author’s writing style is awesome—the characters just come alive.
  • The Half Breed’s Wife by Gypsyn is basically everything I ever want in a fic. Her other stuff is great too, though. I particularly enjoy Shattered and Remade for its imagery and symbolism; and A Story for Shippo is hella cute and guaranteed to make you smile.
  • I don’t know how she did it, but I Hear Your Silence by KeiChanz is pretty much InuKag perfection. Like I don’t even know what else to say about it. A+ fluff, to die for, 10/10 will absolutely read again.
  • The writer bluepianos has some great Inuyasha fics—refreshingly well-written and well-characterized—and I especially enjoyed the one titled ふたりごと.
  • I just recently read I Have a Confession to Make by kimiko888 and I love it. Humor can be hard to write well, but this author totally nails it. Not to mention the fact that it’s chalk-full of InuKag cute. The chapters are stand-alone pieces, and some are more in-character than others; overall, though, I think it’s a really good collection.
  • Folktale by HoneyBee31. Like, honestly? This fic does so many things really, really well. Pacing, world-building, characterization, romantic development… it’s a little gem of a fic that I reread a lot.
  • Elemental: A Feudal Soap Opera by Xi Hou Jun is just quality writing. As the title suggests, it’s full of that good, good drama. The characterization is kinda up for debate, depending on how you interpret the characters; personally I think the characterization is good, particularly Inuyasha’s perspective.
  • You’ve probably seen me recommend this fic before, but I have to include Therapeutic by everstar. It’s a perfect little snapshot of InuKag. Grade-A characterization, flawless writing, 10/10, wish there was a sequel. I also love this author’s (sadly unfinished) multi-chapter fic, Pieces of Me
  • Remember when I said that humor can be hard to write well? Shikigami by Elvirus knocks it outta the park. I swear, this fic reads like canon. It could be an episode from the anime or a chapter from the manga.
  • The Hunt for the Perfect Man by CharmedReality is an excellent, funny, light-hearted read.
  • I’m 100% sure most everyone in the fandom has heard of, if not already read, the following fic, but I’ve gotta include it in any list of well-written, well-characterized fics. Behind the Silk Screen by eien-no-basho is a top tier fic, ain’t no mistake. The amount of detail and historical research is wonderful, and the story itself is a joy to read.
  • Again, I feel like I’m preaching to the choir with this rec, but I gotta, I just gotta: Phony Digits by our very own StoatsandWeasels is 100% worth the read. She nails Kagome’s character, and I love how she writes Sango.

Okay, I think I’d better stop before I bury you alive. I’m sorry if these are all fics you’ve already read—if so, maybe a couple of them are due for a reread? XD

Happy reading!

hi! first of all i love your art and i've been super inspired by your animations!! i'm an animation student too and i'd like to know more about your school if you don't mind? it's in denmark right? what is the level for entering? the cost? i just have one year left to get my bachelors degree in 2d/3d animation and im looking for 2d oriented schools... otherwise, how is it going for you? (sorry if im asking too much! i'm very lost)

Hi! Thank you! and yeah sure!

First of all, here is a link to the schools website: http://www.animwork.dk/en/

It is in Denmark, Viborg. To enter you must have finished high school (or our nordic equivalent gymnasium), you have to prepare a portfolio according to the requirements on the website, write a personal letter. Then, if you pass the first round, you have to do a test and an interview (the test can be done here or via skype).

In Nordic countries, tutition is not a thing, I don’t pay anything. We do have a material fee, which includes programs, computer at school, drawing tablet, pens, sketchbooks, papers, school trips etc. It is 2200 danish kr/month.

I don’t know how it works if you come from outside Eu, if you have to pay, but I’m pretty sure you don’t (since we do have a couple of students that are, and I’ve never heard them mentioning it)

The school is not 2d oriented though. 1st year is 2d only, 2nd year is 3d only (though the last couple of assignments can be in 2d if you ask nicely), 3rd year is dedicated to creating the bachelor film in teams of around 10 people, and you choose which film you want to work on yourself. 4th year is internship.

The character animation program is a Bachelor, with 3 years + at least 3 months internship, graduating january your 4th year.

For me it’s going okay! I like 2d better, I don’t think I can…. live? Without drawing? so 3d can be fun but I just can’t love it the same way.

High school is supposed to prepare students for college, but there is no dress code in college. So if you remove a girl from a class room because you think she’s too much of a distraction to boys, you are really doing a disservice to the boys because once they get to college their classes are going to be full of girls wearing crop tops and short shorts and they’ll have no idea what to do.

Hey so!! I've been seeing the responses you've been giving to some other questions and they seem pretty thorough, so here's my question. I have been in marching since 6th grade, and I am now continuing marching band as a college freshman. I get anxiety going to new places and meeting new people, no matter what. I've been drum major my last two years of high school, I know what I'm doing, but I'm still nervous. Tips? (sorry this is broad lmao anything will help!!)

hi! sorry it’s taken me a little while to answer this! it’s amazing that you are continuing marching in college! here is my advice:

1. think about the friends you currently have. they were once strangers too! think about how many more amazing people you’ll meet, especially the ones that also share an interest in band with you! meeting new people is always bit frightening. but it will be worth it in the end.

2. imagine how many cool things you’ll see. i’m not sure where your college is or where it goes for marching, but there will be so many fascinating places you’ll get to see. you’ll be able to expand your horizons, and explore more of this world! sure it will seem scary, but think about all the fun experiences you’ll gain from visiting new areas.

3. you already have experience! you won’t even have to worry about figuring everything out again (especially since you were drum major for two years. congrats!) you’ll know what you’re doing, and that already gives you a head start for college band!

4. college is a time for change! it’s a place for you to try new things, meet new people, and learn more about yourself. college may seem a bit unnerving, especially since it will be quite different from regular schooling. but you gain freedom in college, and i’m sure whatever life throws at you, you’ll overcome.

5. college bands are fun! sure they are a lot more professional compared to the typical high school band, but they have the same energetic energy to them! people join band because they love the activity. you’ll be surrounded by people with the same interests as you! you might even share some courses or your major with some of them!

whatever happens, you’ll always have a band family to be a part of. i’m sure you’re gonna be a fantastic college marcher. i wish you the best!

The Time I Accidentally Set Myself on Fire

(it kind of speaks for itself, but just in case…. tw for fire)

  • So in my family I’m the one who cooks
  • (Partly because I like it, partly because when I was 13 or so I said to my mum ‘I want to learn how to cook’ and she went ITS YOUR JOB NOW SUCKAAAA and ollied out of the kitchen)
  • And in our old house
  • (‘The hell house’, we call it, not fondly)
  • that meant using the old school spark lit gas stoves.
  • Now I had been using those stoves for about seven years and had never had a problem
  • Until the day I did have a problem
  • (and in case you don’t know by now, when this stuff happens to me it freaking HAPPENS. ‘how bad do you want it to be?’ the personification of misfortune asks. ‘just fuck me up’, i reply)
  • So it’s 2012, June - which is the coldest time of year for us
  • My brother is outside playing with sticks
  • (He’s 14. He has no excuse. Sometimes he uses sticks from the enormous, carefully cultivated twig collection he kept in the backyard, and sometimes he uses foosball sticks from a set my mother bought and promised to put together but never did, and have long since rusted from my brother using them as makeshift lightsabres and then leaving them outside come rain or shine.)
  • so I go into the kitchen and start to make dinner
  • (Pork and sage ragu)
  • (I’ll never forget)
  • (It was a memorable night)
  • I get out the ingredients and the pots and frying pan
  • I’m wearing at home clothes, which includes a multicolored, fraying cotton top with sequins all over
  • (It was actually a really nice top. The only reason it got segregated into staying at home clothes was because of a huge tear on the right side)
  • So I go to turn the gas stove on
  • (As I have done a thousand times before)
  • And to this day I couldn’t tell you if the flames were just really high, or I was standing too close, or if it was the wind factor
  • But for whatever reason, the flame lifts and catches onto the tear in my shirt
  • Out of the corner of my eye, I see the flame is incredibly bright
  • And then I look down and think,
  • Oh.
  • I’m on fire.
  • I try to pat it out
  • Doesn’t work
  • Its been about two seconds of flame on
  • The flames have caught to the rest of my top
  • I fucking
  • SCREAM
  • I have never in my life, before or since, screamed like that
  • So I’m not thinking much besides FUCK FUCK FUCK STOP DROP ROLL FUCK
  • but for some reason, my ON FIRE fight or flight mentality has time to register
  • DONT RUIN THE FUCKING CARPET
  • i BOLT outside
  • the door is, by some goddamn miracle, open
  • I look like Denethor in return of the king
  • I’m diving for the grass when my brother, terrified, throws a bucket of water at me
  • (THE BUCKET. So we had this pipe on the outside of our house that was corroding and leaking water, and the noise was bothering my mum in a telltale heart kind of way, so she put a bucket out there to catch the water)
  • (Note: it is actually probably a really good idea for you to have a random bucket full of water sitting in your backyard)
  • So I’m half lying, soaking wet, in the grass in my backyard
  • I’m crying
  • My brother’s crying
  • My throat hurts from all the screaming
  • My heart Is thundering like crazy
  • Pretty sure I’m in shock
  • I start laughing a little manically
  • (Kind of sound like the joker)
  • Definitely in shock
  • The neighbors are shouting over the fence asking if everything is alright
  • Their pet geese are sqwaking
  • My mother opens her bathroom window and pokes her head out
  • ‘What is it?!? Is it a snake?!?!’
  • NO, MOTHER
  • I’VE BEEN ON FIRE
  • 'A sNAKE?’ I say, still laughing a little, because really now. We live in Australia, yes, but it’s the goddamn suburbs, everyone knows snakes stick to empty lots and fields
  • So the shock is wearing off and I’m still soaking wet, and my mother is outside now telling the neighbors we’re okay, even though my brother is still crying and I’m deep fried extra crispy
  • She’s telling me to get off the grass
  • I don’t want to get off the grass
  • She wants to have a look
  • I don’t want her to have a look
  • 'you have to get up now okay’
  • I get up
  • It’s dark out so we go inside and as soon as my mum sees my side she says ‘wee have to go to the hospital’
  • there are a lot of things I’ll do
  • But I fucking hate
  • The
  • God
  • Damn
  • Hospital

I've started taking medicine after years of ADD left without meds. I really struggled in school and finished my first year of college really badly. Now I've started medication but I usually don't eat unless i'm high. I want to be okay and do well but I don't know how I can do it. I'm a smart kid but if its not hands on learning I won't get too far. I've been making a habit of smoking weed and idk what that's doing to me. I know i'm probably not going to stop. Idk here my head should be.

Well, I can make some suggestions but I think you’re going to have to decide what’s really important to you and then put in some work to achieve it.

So here are my suggestions.

Think about what you really want to do with your life. You say that you do best with hands-on learning, so maybe a trade school or even an apprenticeship is the way to go.

I’m not going to tell you that you have to stop smoking weed; that’s something you need to decide for yourself. Think about whether or not it’s really having a positive effect on your life and then choose what you feel is best for you.

Try to start eating more healthfully and regularly, without the assistance of pot. Think about what foods you like and make sure you have them. Figure out a breakfast you like to eat (I have two scrambled eggs every morning), a lunch you’re usually happy with (my son loves peanut butter and jam sandwiches or pancakes and hot dogs), and a couple of different dinner things that are easy to make. Stock up on what you need to make those things.

Consider adding regular cardio exercise to your routine. This is really good for brain function!

Assess your sleep patterns. You need to be in bed, trying to sleep, for at least seven hours a night for best results. Sleep is really important for brain function.

Another thing to consider: find friends who will support you in your efforts to better yourself, and drop (or limit contact with) those who drag you down. You can find new friends by joining a group that shares one of your special interests and going to all of their meetings.

I hope that you are able to make positive changes and see the progress and success that you want in your life. You can do this.

Heyo, med student advice pretty please! I have an exam in a month from now and need to study (essentially) all of internal medicine... I'm really struggling to retain information (maybe I'm burning out - I don't know how I passed the first 3 years of med school) Any tips? Should I focus on the high yield things? Should I go by system? I feel so overwhelmed since internal medicine is so broad! Thanks so much!!!

Hello!

Firstly, everyone studies differently. I usually stay back from giving too much study advice (even to friends because in the end each of us take our own risks when we choose exactly what to cover and what to skip; it’s our risk, so it’s best if we can’t externalise that blame onto someone else.

That said, you need to have a system Here are some tips on what to learn:

  • Most universities have assessment objectives which need to be covered. Find this list, and plan your studies accordingly. Going by the lectures is usually a fairly safe way of covering most of the important stuff.
  • Covering high yield stuff is a good idea, but don’t just dive into a textbook(because let’s be honest, those are also full of itneresting and distracting things you don’t have the time to learn); I’m a fan of doing most of your base learning from lectures, or from ‘short notes’ kinds of textbooks because they are concise if you are in a time pinch.
  • You can supplement this with info from journals, textbooks, internet etc as required. But remember, keep things relevant.
  • Don’t focus on learning everything (that has neer happened for anybody) but on learning as much useful stuff as you can.

So that’s what to study. Now, about how. Firstly, I have to warn you that I’m rather old-school in my study technique. Anyhow:

  • You need to plan a revision timetable. See my old post for my description of how I used to timetable my subjects. Don’t get distracted into  spending too much time on what you like (or avoiding what you dislike). You can give harder topics slightly more time and topics you are good at less time, but don’t let the hard topics take up more time than you can afford, either.
  • Make sure you have a good study space. Somewhere with as few distractions as possible. Where you can control your environment to be optimal for you. You want somewhere with a decent amount of light, somewhere with enough space for your book or computer, and your notes. Sit comfortably, but not too comfortably; don’t get back pain from poor posture but don’t sit in a way that is just going to make you sleepy (i.e tucked into bed).
  • Contrary to popular belief, coffee shops are not a good place to study. Especially if you are working with limited time. They are noisy, busy and full of distractions. This time of year they are full of other students pretending to study. If you don’t have internet at home or live in the same room as 3 siblings I’d understand, but I stand by my belief that most students ‘studying’ in coffee shops are doing their focus/concentration no favours.
  • Have minimal distractions. Close all your internet tabs. Open one only for your research. Don’t get sucked into other stuff. If they help, use those ‘if you open your phone the tree dies’ apps. Whatever helps you focus
  • This also includes music. Relaxing, non-distracting music is OK, but songs with lyrics (especially music you love enough to distract you or make you sing along) is for breaks. It shouldn’t be interrupting your flow of study too much.
  • Mute all your social media. Turn your phone on silent (or allocate a ringtone to important calls like your mum).
  • For the love of studying, forget the idea of pretty notes. That’s for people who have time to spend all day crafting one perfect page. You’re cramming for an exam not illuminating a scroll. You will study equally well if your notes look like chicken scratches. Whatever helps you learn; highlighting, writing out only key words, etc…
  • Take walks. Rather than ‘studying’ in a packed coffee shop, visit it on your break and reward yourself. Or just take in some sunshine.
  • You need little things to keep you going. Plan little ‘rewards’ for a good job done.
  • Give yourself short breaks every hour or so. Drink some water, eat some fruit, take a walk to refill your glass; do something that gets you refreshed.

I’ve written a lot of stuff in the seond section because making full use of our time isn’t just about what we’re throwing ourselves into, but how we do it. You still have lots of time to pick up a lot of the basic essentials for your exam, so don’t panic and try your best.

Good luck and I hope it goes well!

my mom told me that calling myself autistic is really ableist and offensive to "people with the real developmental disorder autism" and i don't know what she means and i'm really scared that i'm too "high functioning" to call myself autistic? i don't want to hurt anybody.

I, Brother Cat, official Person With The Real Developmental Disorder Autism, hereby proclaim that there is no such thing as high functioning and present to you the Golden Seal of Autism.

You can tell it’s legit ‘cause of the holographic cats, no forgeries here. Henceforth, you now have full permission to call yourself autistic. Now go tell your mom that the autistic community says what’s really offensive and ableist is speaking over us and that she should probably stop doing that.
