I never thought it would last, truth be told. The Wolverine school for gifted youngsters. Sounded to me like a disaster in the making. But look at this place now. Look at you. [Wolverine and the X-men #42]
I can (finally) present to you the finished fic for my fic giveaway, which @bananannabeth won!!! Big thanks to her for a really interesting prompt (which was Percabeth going to highschool in canonverse) and also for just generally being an awesome person.
Disclaimer: I know very little of the American schooling system. Please forgive any inaccuracies. Also, this is set after Blood of Olympus, before MCGA or ToA. Percy still goes to Goode! Other than that, I hope you enjoy this oneshot!!
“Is that Percy Jackson?”
“Who’s that girl with him?”
Whispers filled the hall as Percy strolled down the familiar corridor of Goode with Annabeth. Heads turned as he walked past, leaving a trail of confusion and whispering in his wake.
Percy’s mind was filled with all his old school friends and memories. He felt Annabeth squeeze his hand and he smiled at her reassuringly. Once again, Percy felt so glad that he and Annabeth were going to spend a year of high school together, especially after the year they’d just had: facing giants, finding new camps…and they’d spent most of it separated.
“Percy Jackson,” someone exclaimed, striding towards him.
Percy looked over at him, trying to place him. For a second Percy didn’t recognise him. But then a casual smile lit up Percy’s face, as Percy’s eyes brightened in recognition.
“Terry?” Percy asked. He clapped Terry on the back as he approached Percy and they embraced shortly.
“Percy,” Terry answered, “long time no see!” He grinned. “It’s great to see you. How long’s it been–a year now?”
“Yeah, must be, mustn’t it?” Percy replied uneasily, messing up his hair unwittingly. He knew this would be the worst bit. “Stuff… happened.”
Terry’s eyes betrayed his confusion and suspicion, but he didn’t press the matter, for which Percy was glad.
“Glad to see you back Percy. How are you, man?”
“Great, thanks. A bit worse now that I’m back at Goode with you though,” Percy joked.
Terry chuckled. “Thanks. I see you’ve brought a friend along too?”
“Yup. Terry, this is Annabeth; Annabeth, this is my friend Terry,” he said, introducing them.
“Nice to meet you, Terry,” Annabeth said, stretching out her hand.
Terry smiled at her then turned to Percy. “This is the same Annabeth? The Annabeth you talked about?” Percy nodded, resulting in Terry grinning broadly. “Well, it’s nice to know she’s real.”
Annabeth raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t think I was real?”
Terry blushed. “Well, you see, he was always talking about you, and–”
“I was not always talking about her!” Percy protested. It was his turn to blush.
Annabeth just laughed. “Well, I’m definitely real.”
“So how come you’re at Goode?” Terry asked. “Did you move?”
Annabeth shared a smile with Percy, a brief but meaningful look passing between them. “We decided to spend our senior year together,” Annabeth said, “so for the first time I’m trying out high school with this Seaweed Brain.” She bumped shoulders with Percy.
@markrosewater recently answered an ask about teaser cards in sets and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. What I’m referring to as a teaser card is a card the makes reference to something that’s in the pipeline but which hasn’t been printed yet. It’s a card (or cards) that will come in a later set or block.
I believe there’s a right and a wrong way to do these. Read on to see how Wizards blew it in the past and find out if Hour of Devastation will repeat the failure or deliver on the promise.
I got sucked into Daiya, so when I had like 5 episodes of HQ to catch up on last week, I was like oh yeah, he Sawamura too. Let’s just pretend their ‘sawa’ kanji aren’t different. (澤村 for Daichi and 沢村 for Eijun)
I remember miraculous ladybug really well because I watched it and then immediately rewatched it and I blogged about it pretty intensely for a few months and it even got me reading fanfiction again and then really fast I lost absolutely any interest in it and dropped it. I have utterly no emotional reaction when I think about it these days.
• She loved Tyler (not that I was surprised, she’s got a type)
• every time Ryan appeared “no nOO NOT YOU AGAIN”
• Helen lost a lot of cookie points in the last few episodes but by the end she was loving her again
• Gabe as BestFatherOfTheYear™
• “Tony I love you but for fuck’s sake sTOP GIVING OUT CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION TO PEOPLE!”
• during the finale: “Anne no no no nOO”
• “Lukas’ hair was so fake honestly please let him have his natural hair colour next time”
• during the sex scene: “oh my god they’re..? They’re doing it??? Isn’t Lukas in pain??? Stop! Guys no, no, ahi, painful, stop trying to take his shirt off he jUST GOT SHOT!”
• “ok I love this tv show and I’m gonna scream if we don’t get season 2
• BLACK AND WHITE?????
• who was in charge?? Why did they decide the show needed to be this grey blob???”
So all in all I can say she loved it and she is now a true eyewitness fan.
Hey so you said you liked prompts and I saw a post that said "tis the season to violently fire mistletoe out of a cannon at your otp" I was thinking Delgado would maybe enjoy that
Delgado violently fires mistletoe at Graves every year in an attempt to catch Graves in it. He even spells them with contact-activated freezing charms to give people a chance, because Graves is a slippery bugger and is likely to apparate away before anyone gets a chance to plant one on him.
It’s yet to work. He’s tried silencing charms on the cannon, releasing the mistletoe from a neighbouring room with tracking charms to hone in on Graves, he’s even tried weaving the mistletoe into a net and releasing it over the whole damn room and oh look, Graves has performed a spontaneous shrinking charm on himself and managed to escape through the holes. Bastard.
So this year, Delgado tries something different. He fires the mistletoe at Graves at the office Christmas party as usual, because to do otherwise would be suspicious, but the real kicker comes just over a week later on New Year’s eve.
Specifically, on New Year’s eve at approximately two minutes to midnight.
He enlists Tina’s help to get Graves, and he swears, he honestly swears it was her idea to put the portkey on a timer, shrink it down to microscopic sizes and slip it into Graves’ drink because holy shit that’s terrifying. Slipping portkeys into someone’s drink? Goldstein what the fuck. Delgado will never eat anything she brings in ever again just in case it transports him to the Himalayas or somewhere equally far away. Drinks are for spiking with alcohol not with potential death, good god Tina.
Delgado gets Newt though and he goes down the traditional canon route because Delgado loves his traditional canon route. And Newt, poor little lost lamb, does not have Graves’ experience when it comes to (a) sensing a Delgado plot afoot and (b) dodging it, so he gets hit with a faceful of glitter and a portkey square to the chest.
And, maybe, Delgado doesn’t quite have Tina’s skill with portkeys, so Newt’s wasn’t timed and the wide eyed magizoologist is whisked away in a cloud of gold smoke. And, maybe, Delgado was a bit over excited and fired his canon early which means that Graves’ killer death drink portkey hasn’t yet activated and holy shit, Graves, please don’t kill him, oh god Tina retreat hide now.
In the sort of dramatic climax that really ought to be reserved for b horror movies, Graves has got as far as cornering the pair of them and has his wand drawn on Delgado with one hand while the other slams Delgado’s shield so far into oblivion that he doubts he’ll ever be able to cast a shield charm again.
He’s one syllable into god only knows what spell and Delgado has given up on all pretence and is cowering behind Tina when the timer finally kicks in and whisks Graves away.
Delgado gibbers a bit and starts clutching at the floor. Tina kicks and tries to pretend that she’d had everything under control and hadn’t been fearing for her life. Everyone else politely tries to pretend they don’t exist.
But where did the portkeys take Newt and Graves, you might ask? Well. It’s New Year’s eve. Two minutes - a minute and a half, now - to midnight. There’s only one place to be.
Newt and Graves are deposited on top of the Times Square Big Ball, overlooking a cheering throng of people in the square. It’s the best place for a midnight kiss, surely? Delgado’s even charmed a tiny piece of mistletoe to hover over Newt’s head. What could be more perfect?
(The weather, for one - it was fairly warm inside and Newt had only been wearing his shirt and waistcoat. He’s shivering by the time Graves appears, and Graves wastes no time in shrugging off his jacket to wrap around Newt’s shoulders.
Also the location, because, Delgado, the big ball drops and holy fucking shit do you have any idea how unromantic it is to be standing on top of it, desperately gripping with sticking charms on your shoes as you hurtle towards the ground?
Very. Very unromantic.
But the rush of adrenalin makes Newt giggle as he wobbles to his feet after the ball has landed, and he clutches at Graves’ arms for balance. Fireworks fill the sky with light and colour and the mistletoe glitters hopefully above them, and, well.
Graves’ hand is warm against Newt’s back and the flick of his eyes down to Newt’s lips is slow. His mouth opens, tongue darting out as though to lick, to taste, and Newt leans closer without even meaning to. They press their foreheads together and stay like that for a single moment on the cusp of eternity, gazes locked and an infinity of words filling the silence.
A firework goes off directly overhead, red and gold raining down above them, and Newt closes his eyes and tilts his head. Graves’ lips are soft beneath his, the kiss is slow and sweet and the playful wind presses them in closer.
soooooo, I’ve been working on this Fantasy!AU right????
It’s still kinda in construction, but basically, Haru comes from a line of ‘water people’ and it gives him the power to bring water to life. He can’t control it, he can talk to it, but he can never force it to act against its will
Meanwhile you got Makoto who comes from a normal family, but he’s one of those who was born with the Light and that gives certain healing powers. He will be sent to a special academy later to learn how to use them and potentially become a healer. He is still afraid of water and his own powers, but Haru is working really hard to make him understand that ‘water would never hurt him’.
So anyway, I’m having a lot of fun with this so you can expect more of it~ And I have like hundreds of really cute headcanons for this so I gotta find a way to share them all
un do you mind if i ask smth like this but what instruments do u play? (i read the rant on sewoon's tuning and got curious so) and... why do ppl tune strings differently than regular tuning? is it for ease of playing or special effects or smth else?
hi hi hi!! thank u so much for sending this in btw <3333
i’ll answer the music part first and put my personal instrument thing under a read more :)
there could be a lot of reasons why ppl tune strings differently! the reasons you have stated are some of them! ease of playing is definitely a consideration. i’m not sure what you mean by special effects, but I think i may have an example of “special effects” in my read more ramble maybe.
but i’m not a guitarist so i can’t really say much about guitar ppl. I went back and listened to sewoons intro and it does look like he tuned down the entire guitar down a half step (not just the low e string). i looked it up and apparently its a real musical thing (called e flat tuning) and according to stuff online it could be to accommodate for his vocal range.
i’m not sewoon so idk what was going through his brain, but he does end up singing happy right? the original song has G#4s at the part that goes “sunshine she’s here you can take a break”, which is the highest note he has to sing in the song. but with tuning it down, he ends up only having to sing an F#4, down two semitones or 1 whole step. even going down one semitone can be relief to a singer (case in point: sunggyu singing 60 seconds live in a key that made every note exactly one semitone lower than in the originally, which his high note in the song from an a4 to a g#4). as a tenor, G#4s are, i don’t want to say high, but it’s not low. with poor technique its not a note that can be easily sung however it’s not impossible and it is definitely feasible for tenors to sing that high if they train properly. Sewoon has shown that he has trouble with notes as low as f4s. in the company audition when he sang his “don’t misunderstand” he strained quite a bit for f4s and for g4s that were in the song (f4s are when he says ‘neo’ and g4 when he says ‘-pujima’). so i’m not sure if he’s going to want to stay in a key where he has the sing G#4s, when he has trouble with g4s but this is all speculation he could have just been like “ooh this is cool let me do this i like how this songs” and just went with it and it might not have to do with his vocal range at all *shrugs*
fun fact: he actually tunes down his guitar for his solo song too! he does “c” tuning (you can hear him tune down the e string to a c string) which is also apparently a thing for guitar players but there are different types too and I think he only tuned down his e string (but there are other common ways too).
tl;dr sewoon is quite a versatile guitar player…i think. i’m not sure how common tuning guitar strings differently is bc again not my area of expertise but i still find it super cool that he does it relatively often. I knew guitar players used capos but i didnt know they actively tuned their instruments differently (idk how often other guitar players do it bc for different “tunings” of strings i’ve only really seen capos, which is this like little clip thingie that ppl put over their guitar strings instead of individually tuning each string to a different note and i’ve seen that usually for ease of chord playing. i’m not sure if i’ve seen sewoon with one, he tends to use his entire finger to act as a capo instead almost? its weird to explain. u can see sewoon do it here for a split second. his index finger goes and covers all the strings at one time; thats what a capo does in essence)
in my read more is the answer to how many instruments i can play and in what context i have used different tunings on my instrument to offer maybe another reason why ppl might choose to tune down their instruments
