i'm not talking about the bear

hunk: hey have you ever thought who shiros favorite is?

lance: oh hunk. oh my hunky honey bear. you do NOT want to know my thoughts on THAT whole situation

hunk: oh boy. ok I’ll bite, who is shiros favorite?

lance: fine you asked for it. it’s pidge.

hunk: …..huh. I would’ve thought you might have said keith.

lance: oh yeah he is too

hunk: ok you lost me

lance: look the way i see it is, pidge is the favorite the way the baby of the family is always the favorite. Keith is like the eldest son, born to take over the family business or whatever.

hunk: alright….so where do we fall in all of this?

lance: well pidge is first with keith running a close second so while keith may not get more desert at the table or get away with murder like pidge does, he’s given more responsibilities and will ultimately gain more of the inheritance. after him comes allura who’s sort of like the hot girl next door shiro has a crush on but he’s too shy to ever ask out. then it’d be you, the cuddly middle child who’s kind of left to his own devices cause your can obviously take care of yourself, then coran, alluras whacky uncle, then the Lions who are the family pets, then me

hunk:

lance: the other middle child who’s the obnoxious class clown only there to get a cheap laugh out of the audience and kind of just there to make shiro angry or exasperated and give him more personality otherwise he’ll look boring

hunk: ….lance

lance: but then again I’m not the last one anymore cause now slavs in the picture and HE’S the one who makes shiro angry and annoyed…..although, he is a lot smarter than i am and he brings out an even funnier side of shiro so I’m probably still the least favorite…….what were we talking about again?

hunk getting up and hugging lance from behind: lance you know you can always talk to me about stuff right?

lance trying not to tear up: uh yeah hunky bear i know that why wouldn’t i know that

hunk: us ignored middle children need to stick together

lance: heh yeah

Tis’ is unbearable!!!

Considering I’ve received a bunch of awesome Persona 5 mutuals lately, I’d like to point out Katsuya is technically around in Tokyo at the time, if this TV cameo (where he’s featured with Akihiko) is anything to go by. Considering Katsuya would be in his forties by canon’s timeline, we can deduce that Katsuya is a DILF has become an established force of justice.

Okay gang, bear with me because I'm going to talk to you about a glorious dumpster fire of a Shakespeare play called Henry VI part 3 and why I love it.

This is a boring sounding title, but it is SO NOT a boring play.

This thing is almost unperformable. It has more battle scenes than any other Shakespeare play. It has the longest soliloquy in all of his plays. It has over 40 characters in it. Many of them die. The characters and events depicted in it are indecipherable to American audiences, who probably have never really learned about the Wars of the Roses. The same two guys keep getting crowned and kicked off the throne in dizzying succession. I just saw a fittingly wack rendition of it performed in a pub with actors openly drinking beer onstage and changing name tags and hats to indicate which characters they were playing, which I think is fully in the spirit of the play, and I want to talk about why I’m so fond of it.

Anyway, you all know that I am obsessed with Richard III. I directed the play. I wrote a NaNoWriMo novel based on it. WELL, that play makes a whole lot more sense, and several of the characters have more depth, if you’ve also read Henry VI part 3… like, yeah, there are two other parts before that, but if your aim is understanding Richard’s role in the story, this play is the ‘villain origin story’ that brings him to the point of his famous opening speech in the play named after him– the speech in which he plots to murder his way to the throne, eliminating any family members standing in his way without a second thought.

But near the very end of this very raw, rough early play of his, Shakespeare manages to condense Richard’s self-loathing, rejection of family ties, and motivation into a few short lines that, in my mind, are even more effective than the entire 'Now is the winter of our discontent’ speech:

“Then, since the heavens have shaped my body so,
Let hell make crook’d my mind to answer it.
I have no brother, I am like no brother;
And this word 'love,’ which graybeards call divine,
Be resident in men like one another
And not in me: I am myself alone.”

The 'rejection of family’ thing is especially powerful because, having read and seen Richard III first, I had certain preconceived notions of Richard’s family dynamics. I had assumed that Richard was treated like an outcast and inferior by his family because of his deformity, and that his older brothers, Edward and George, were portrayed as virtuous compared to him, based on the way characters talk about them in Richard III.

Instead, when Richard bursts onstage in the first scene of 3HenryVI, it is to impress his father with a trophy of war, who compliments him and says “Richard hath best deserved of all my sons.” His older brother, Edward, who will later become Edward IV, brought a comparatively meager relic of war, and George isn’t even there.

Throughout the early scenes, Richard consistently impresses us with his bravery, wit, daring, and combat skill. He is… cool. Compared to him, Edward looks weak, whiny, unprincipled, useless (he gets captured and needs to be rescued by Richard) and a total skeeze who puts his personal life ahead of battles and grants mercy at the wrong times. George looks like a double-crossing, weak-willed, indecisive, and materialistic crybaby who barely appears in battle. In such a time of brutal war, Richard’s incredibly cruel and violent personality makes him look HEROIC. The three brothers may disagree, but they also support each other and seem to care about each other. Richard is in no way excluded- he leads the way. All three brothers equally participate in the murder of the Lancaster crown prince– one that Richard is blamed for in “Richard III.” He claims the prince was slain by Edward, which is played as a lie, but if you look at Henry VI part 3, Edward did strike first. This makes more sense as to why all three brothers are cursed by Queen Margaret in the next play.

And what’s more, nobody in his family ever draws attention to his disability, even when squabbling with him. It’s only the people on the opposing side of the battle who bring it up, constantly taunting him for his deformities. If he comes to see himself as an irredeemable monster whose body reflects his mind, it wasn’t brought on by how his family treated him. There’s sadistic behavior on both sides of the war, but Richard is the only major player who is physically unhandsome, and therefore the easiest to demonize.

We also see a young Richard deal with serious trauma from the horrifying murder of his brother Rutland (portrayed as a little brother and a child in the play, though he was older in history) and his father. When he gets revenge on the people who did these deeds, we feel good about it. He even angrily confronts the man who did it for being a murderer of children– ironic if you know what he’s going to get up to in the future.

It’s when his brother Edward becomes king that the real divide happens between the York brothers. The bond of war that united them instead divides them, as Edward and George become preoccupied with matters of love, sex, and money, and Richard realizes that the world holds no potential pleasures for him except for angling for power.

Killing is all he is really good at– he’s been fighting since he was a kid and has been praised for it, but those qualities that made him an admirable warrior are distasteful in peacetime, especially when civil wars have been tentatively smoothed over. In court, the disfigured little brother has no real place to shine. He was a kid who was totally desensitized to violence very, very early in life.

Also? Queen Margaret, who I played in Richard III, has a much bigger role in this play– and much more sadistic than she appears in Richard III. She’s SUPER vile, and the only character to appear in all four Wars of the Roses plays. And she wears armor and commands armies. I love her. At one point, a character says to her incompetent king husband, “I would your highness would depart the field: The queen hath best success when you are absent.” It’s a pity Shakespeare used his most formidable female character this early in his career.

This play is totally wack, but there’s so much great stuff going on with it, and I really urge people to read it if they’re interested in Richard III. The Hollow Crown did a shortened version of it (Though it’s called Part 2 there), and I really want to see the American Shakespeare Center’s production of it this fall.

What do you think the twins would be like if the director had not been pulling that shit? Like what is the purpose of an experiment to break about twins?

From what we can gather, it was essentially a psychological experiment. See what happens when one twin gets things that the other one doesn’t, and how that affects the relationship. Why they felt the need to do this? God knows. Honestly, god knows. That’s the answer to half of PFL’s ‘experiments’, there’s like no purpose to half of them except to fuck shit up good.

If the Director hadn’t fucked with them, they’d most likely have continued just as we saw them in their first season 9 appearance. Their relationship was never perfect; North was too patronising and overbearing, South was bitey and mean sometimes etc etc, but their jabs at each other before were likely never actually meant to hurt long-term. Their relationship was playfully antagonistic, brother and sister causing nuisances for each other, getting annoyed at each other. They were close, very close. They worked perfectly together in a fight.

If the Director wasn’t being an asshole, they could have been one of the Project’s greatest assets because of how well they worked together. Their relationship wouldn’t have fallen apart as dramatically as it did. If they were treated with the same respect, been allowed to work together, they could have achieved a lot.

okay but

I don’t Discourse, but I get so angry when people dismiss asexual’s people’s problems as something like “Boohoo, you don’t want to fuck, no one gives a shit”.

But it’s so much more than that. Obviously it’s not homophobia, never was and never will be. It doesn’t even compare, it’s not the same thing at all.

But there are issues asexual people face like - there is pressure, part of it from society, and a lot of it come for ourselves. And that kind of self-hate and self-loathing and thinking you’re broken and unloveable, developping unhealthy sexual behaviour and self-harm - it’s a thing, it’s definitely a thing, not something 14-year-old kids on tumblr made up for attention. It can really mess you up, mess your relationships up, and people are so afraid to talk about it - I read words of older people - and I don’t mean people my age, I mean people in their 50s, their 60s - probably they don’t even know asexuality is even a thing, they got married and had kids and always felt wrong, because they hate sex and they never wanted it and never felt comfortable around it but they did it, quietly, never said a fucking word, and hated themselves a bit more every single time because they never understood why they felt they were missing what they were always told was supposed to be a fundamental part of themselves. They spent their entire life thinking they were broken.

and. it’s not homophobia, it’s not bigotry from an entire society keeping you from jobs and housing, etc. there’s no stats or anything. And maybe a lot of non-asexual people relate to this self-loathing, too. Things are never completely clear cut - there is always some overlapping. It doesn’t make it any less important. It’s still a thing that most asexual people go through, at least for part of their life, and it can really, really mess someone up. And there’s no need to get into discourse or into any (useless and frankly asinine) comparisons - it just needs to be taken seriously for what it is, because people’s health and happiness are what’s at play and it matters, too.

Prepare Yourselves

… Cos I’m writing Jumin’s “To Promise” and it’s hitting 4k and… they still haven’t done anything close to smutty. WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME EVERY TIME JUJU?! WHAT DID I DO TO YOU?! WHY YOU GOTTA SET THE PLOT BUNNIES ON ME?!?!?

Hi, help me I watch Woman Wonder and my friend says that is biphobic (???) w these arguments: "there is no talk of about love w women on the island and everything Diana knows about sex is bc she has read it in a book " "she only beats the bad guy bc she sees the boy dies so she doesn't care about war only about him " "censored her bisexuality w women and racialized women are the ones who take the worst blows" I'm not good w words help me to counterargument bc we have seen two different movies.

Oh boy…. Alright so as requested, I come bearing counter arguments.

(And by that I mean, mostly the amazing @kara-danvers-lena-luthor comes bearing them. This is mostly her with commentary and backup arguments from me because like 95% of this is her pure genius and I love her). Ahem! So tell your friend to pull up a chair.

1) “There’s no talk about love with women on the island and everything Diana knows about sex is because she has read it in a book.”

Okay, but there’s no talk about hetero sex either. Even though it’s IMPLIED that Diana slept with Steve, they never EXPLICITLY talk about it. Also, which is more important to the story of Diana becoming the GREATEST WARRIOR of all times? Showing her growing up and training? Or showing her growing up and sleeping with women? I guess the answer is obvious, don’t you think?

Diana’s sexuality was not the focus of the film. Why would it be? Love and sex were not the elements that made these incredible women who they are. And just as it is implied that she slept with Steve, it can be just as easily implied that she and/or the Amazons were sexually involved with women. (More on this in a bit).

2) “She only beats the bad guy because she sees Steve dying.”

Hon, sweetheart, pal, buddy… If your friend thinks that, they truly don’t know WW. Diana, in the comics, literally blinded herself to defeat Medusa. Do you really think she would have stopped fighting Ares? The entire movie is about Diana completing the Amazon’s mission, which is defeating Ares! Believe me, even if Steve hadn’t died, she would have found a way to defeat him. Losing Steve just gave her an extra push to finish him faster.

I argued in a previous post against the outlandish notion that Steve is the singular hero of this film. He helped save the day, she saved the world. It was Diana’s fight and strong faith in humanity that helped contribute to her victory over Ares. In her fight, she never gave up, she had a moment where some would say that hope seemed lost, but she searched within herself and fought for what she believed in. She didn’t just defeat Ares with her brute strength, just as she didn’t defeat him because the man she loved died. Ares attempted to use that against her – her anger and heartbreak. He almost succeeded but in the end she was superior because of how she was able to rise above that. Defeating him because she was angry (which was not the case) would have served your friend’s argument, but that’s simply not what happened. Next.

3) “Censored her bisexuality.”

First of all, we need to stop with this notion that in order for us to believe someone is bisexual their dating history has to be 50% women, 50% men! (THIS!!!). Secondly, Diana herself says that men are unnecessary for pleasure! What more does your friend want?? But yes, they had to be careful, because there was a lot riding on this project: the first solo female superhero movie, the first superhero movie directed by a woman, first movie directed by a woman with over $100 million budget… so they needed to make bank!!! They needed to make sure they wouldn’t anger bigoted people, and they did an wonderful job, okay? They made it clear that Diana knows women give each other pleasure, and that she also can fall for men. It’s not erasure, it’s called playing it smart!

I’m just going to throw in the idea of the double standard here, because with arguments that get thrown around on here, we would have seen it. So stay with me. Yes, we would all love to see a wlw Wonder Woman in the movies. And it’s not too late! Who knows, maybe we will! But let’s be real here, if they threw in something really quickly about Diana actually being with a woman, or if she were in a relationship with a woman before leaving Themyscira, that would have received backlash as well. Because it would have been quick and probably only implied in the background of everything else going on. If executed poorly, it could have contributed to the stigma and one of the primary stereotypes against bisexual people! She’s in love with a woman, she meets Steve, has her canon interactions with him, leaves Themyscira (and thus the woman she loves) behind and falls in love with Steve in the short amount of time they have together? Fact: There would have been complaints there too. Sadly, you can’t satisfy all the people, all the time.

4) “Women of color are the ones who take the worst blows.”

What???? I’m sorry, but from all your friend’s arguments, this point is the most ridiculous one to me… Seriously, take your friend to the movie again. After the battle at the beach, an Amazon suggests killing Steve to be done with it, but it’s a black Amazon who is the voice of reason and tells the Queen herself that they should listen to what he has to say.

A black Amazon, Artemis, is portrayed as the strongest among them. She’s the one who hits Diana in the face during Diana’s last training. She’s the one that you see in the first scene of the Amazon’s training shaking off her attackers like they’re nothing. That’s the point! She’s a brick wall! The one to beat. And that isn’t racist. Honey that’s goals. As a black woman I was proud to see that bit! (Not to mention, Artemis was white in her original comic book appearances. She was portrayed as a black woman, I believe in later editions and in a 2009 film. The issue would have been making Artemis the pony-tailed redhead we see originally, but instead we got the amazing Ann Wolfe. So~)

Also after they listen to Steve, and Diana asks her mom to send the Amazons back with him, one of them asks, “What are you talking about, child?” To which Diana replies, “Forgive me, Senator” and guess what? That Amazon is black as well, meaning that they hold high ranks in their society. So I really don’t know what your friend is going on about.

This is a good segue to return to the issue of erasing the Amazon’s sexuality and still tying it in with issues of race. Fun little fact that I learned today:

Why is this important? Who is Phillipus?

☝☝She is☝☝

Queen Hippolyta and Phillipus are lovers in the comics. Anyone that knew that probably would have been looking for it after finding out Phillipus was in the film. I know I would have been if I knew this sooner. Now it is true, that it is not blatantly obvious that the two are involved in the film. But complete erasure would have been ignoring Phillipus altogether. Instead, they had her, she was STILL a WOC, and in a position that would have more or less kept her at Hippolyta’s side. See where I’m taking this?

So anyway, woc were not just there to take the heavy hits. They show a woman of color with brute strength, they show a woman of color being the voice of reason, they show a woman of color in a high ranking position. It was multifaceted.

So there it is. Anything else? Did we help? 😃

TL;DR: NO. Literally no to everything your friend said. Just… no. kbye

I just want to talk about Regency court dress for a minute

It’s been discussed here before, but good lord. I love seeing pictures of English court dress from the Regency era. I mean look at this

This happened because the ageing Queen Charlotte just could not BEAR to part with her 18th century hoops when the fashions started changing. And since the Queen was the deciding factor in what ladies of the court wore..

What is this supposed to…What?

Someone stop this I feel ill

LET IT DIE CHARLOTTE
