i'm going to have to color this one at some point

Oh almighty napkin arm with googly eyes, I humble peregrin dare come forth with a request... could you make some character design breakdowns for some more realistic characters? Like your power ranger fanart? I tried to break them down on my own, but I'm not sure I did it that well... it's incredibly useful and interesting... Keep being awesome, and thanks for how you already helped me anyway!

Thanks for the patience, had to mull this one over. The more complex a design gets, the more difficult it is to break down. Basic character design tips may not be enough…so let’s delve into:

Character Design Tips Part 2!

Before we start, it’ll help to read my last character design post, where I laid out four concepts: shapes, silhouettes, colors, and inspiration. In this post, I aim to build on and rephrase these in a way that hopefully makes it easier to apply them. I’ll be drawing examples from my Power Rangers (2017) fanart to illustrate my points.

(Disclaimers:)

  • (Ideally, you should already be comfortable with drawing people. If not, look into figure drawing, gesture drawing, etc.)
  • (Whereas my previous tips were more tried and true, the tips here are more my own thoughts, so they may be half-formed.)
  • (Again, these are not rules. They’re just tips to add to your toolbox; the more tools you have, the more versatile you’ll become.)

Without further ado, let’s start!

Based off what we know about shapes, silhouettes, colors and inspiration, I want to cover: lines and angles, external and internal silhouettes, values, and references.

1. Shapes => Lines and Angles

Last time, I laid out three basic shapes:round, box, and triangle.

Problem: limiting yourself to these 3 shapes can be useful and fun for simpler designs, but they may be too simple or look out of place on more complex designs.

Solution: let’s go to the next level! Instead of shapes, shift your thinking to lines and angles!

Lines can be curved, straight, or diagonal.
Angles can range from obtuse to acute angles.
Follow your intuition: what feeling do you get from each line or angle?
If I follow my own intuition, I see that:

  • curved lines = natural, soft
  • straight lines = balanced, grounded
  • diagonal lines = off-balance, in motion
  • obtuse angles = broad, relaxed
  • right angles = rigid, unnatural
  • acute angles = slim, dynamic

If this sounds familiar, you’re right! It’s just the shapes all over again:

  • curved lines make round shapes
  • straight lines with obtuse/right angles make boxy shapes
  • diagonal lines with acute angles make triangular shapes

But lo! Since we broke the shapes into their smaller components, it’s much more flexible! Now we can use lines and angles for more complex designs:

2. Silhouette => External and Internal Silhouettes

Last time, I explained the silhouette test: if you black out the figure, it should still be readable.

Problem: blacking out the figure only tests the outline of the design, i.e. the external silhouette. But what about the inside of the design?

Solution: block in the figure and test for the internal silhouette!

If you want not just an interesting outline, but an interesting costume, block in the major components of your design to see if it has a readable internal silhouette. This test can help you avoid boring or cluttered costumes and makes your design stand out. If your internal silhouette is too empty, try adding props or designs. If it’s too busy, simplify it.

3. Colors => Values

Last time, I talked about the 60-30-10 and 70-30 rules for color.

Problem: those rules work on the assumption that you’re only using 2 to 3 colors. But what if I want to use more colors?

Solution: good news! The same idea applies if you split your palette into 3 major values: shadows, midtones, and highlights.

Balance your palette by converting your colors to grayscale and applying the 60-30-10 rule to the values. This is related to the idea of silhouettes; if you get a nice internal silhouette, you’ll probably end up with a nicely balanced set of palette values, and vice versa.

(Fun fact! You can split your palette in different ways. In a watercolor tutorial, Miyazaki splits the palette into bright, dark, black, green 1, green 2, blue 1, and blue 2.)

4. Inspiration => References

“Good artists copy, great artists steal!” -Picasso

Problem: Coming up with something 100% original is tedious and doesn’t always give great results. It saps the inspiration right out of you!

Solution: It’s a lot easier to steal ideas from references!

Note: don’t just copy, steal! Cherry-pick/massage the aspects of the reference you find the most appealing and work them into your design. Ditch anything that you don’t care about. Make it your own! Make it something you can put your own name on! Below is the reference image I used for my designs:

And below is my fanart:

(so I sent this before, but I don't think it send correctly.) I'm writing an IronPanther one shot, and I'm trying to describe T'Challa in a way that isn't fetishizing. Do you have any tips for ways I can describe him that is very appreciative of the way he looks without being hella creepy? What are some dos and don'ts?

Hi!  Thanks for your question :)  It’s very responsible of you to be mindful of this issue.  I’ll try to cover the bases, but I’m not a person of color, so this is only based on reading and research…

Writing Characters of Color: Dos and Don’ts

First things first: I would suggest to anyone writing characters of color that you should follow @writingwithcolor.  It’s my absolute favorite blog on the topic of diverse writing, and includes plenty of resources for most races and cultures.  I’ll probably link you to a couple of their posts in this guide, so keep an eye out!  So here we go…

Do: Make their race clear.

In fact, clearly designate the race of all characters!  Even if a majority of your characters are white, you should state this in their description – otherwise, you’re painting the image that white is Baseline and Normal, while black/brown/beige are Divergent and Strange.  Understand that many readers will assume White Until Proven Otherwise.  This means that if you shy away from stating a character’s color in the fear of offending PoC readers, you’re actually just erasing the character’s race altogether.  (Personal note: obviously your readers will know what color T’Challa is, so this is a point for the future.)

Don’t: Use descriptors that make me hungry.

“Chocolate,” “caramel,” “coffee,” “brown sugar,” “cinnamon,” “honey” – you get the idea.  Anything that could also be used to describe my dessert is probably a terrible idea.  Not only is this not at all how white characters are described, which is unfair, but the reduction of adult, three-dimensional people to grocery items has racially-aggressive roots.  This is where I’m gonna link you to Writing With Color’s guide on how (and how not) to describe characters of color.

Do: Familiarize yourself with the harmful stereotypes.

This means a little research, no matter what race you’re writing.  A lot of the racist mistakes made in literature/fanfiction come from a place of ignorance, sometimes willfully.  People avoid learning the dirty past of racial representation in media, because they’re afraid they’ll subconsciously absorb them.  It’s a weird complex and I advise you, and all writers, to take the time to glance over the most offensive stereotypes for people of color, women, LGBT, trans/nonbinary, autistic, mentally ill, and disabled people.  This will not only keep you from hurting anyone, but it also makes your writing more unpredictable and interesting!  Plus, it makes you not-one-of-those-douchebags-who-write-two-dimensional-exotic-chocolate-brown-mistresses and all that 👍

Don’t: Desexualize your characters.

This is a common mistake that can come from good intentions.  You’re try so hard not to fetishize a character of color and then it reduces them to a non-sexual, non-attractive broom in the corner.  Characters of color – all characters really – god, especially women – should be three-dimensional and fully developed people, who are not sold to readers on their looks and sexual appeal.  BUT this doesn’t mean you should exclude all sexuality in writing.  T’Challa, for example, is a damn handsome man – you can’t possibly write him and ignore how nice he looks!  So don’t be afraid to describe him physically.  You can describe his eyes and his lips and his muscles and we will read happily.  Go ahead and talk about how smooth and warm and rich his skin is.  As long as sexuality is described through a lens of admiration, rather than objectification – and as long as their sexuality exists in accompaniment to their full, developed personality, and not instead of it – then there’s nothing wrong with making a character bangin’ hot.  So do it.  And lastly…

Do: Consider collaborating with a beta-reader.

You said in your previous ask that this was one of your first attempts at writing characters of color, so I’d suggest that if you feel nervous about it, partner up with a beta-reader who has enough experience to keep you in check.  It’s our responsibility as writers (especially for white, privileged writers such as myself) to learn to look at ourselves and assess whether or not we’ve crossed the line.  Having someone beta-read for you will show you the critical thinking process to go through, so eventually, you’ll be able to do it without thinking about it!  Maybe a few people here would be interested in a betaship.

Those are my top Dos and Don’ts, but as always, this is limited to my experience.  Be sure to check out @writingwithcolor and do your research – and remember that no matter how much research you do, you’re bound to make a mistake or two.  If it happens and a reader points it out to you, don’t beat yourself up about it or get defensive.  Just apologize, correct the mistake, and move on.

Thanks again, and good luck :)  Happy writing!

If you need advice on general writing or NaNoWriMo, you should maybe ask me!

Soulmate AU where your soulmark doesn't only symbolise your soulmate, but also how you'll realise that they are your soulmate. (because unlike the romace novels it isn't always "bond" at first sight, sometimes it takes YEARS to discover what was there all along). Now imagine Stiles so obsessed with his very-much everlasting state of virginity because of his bite mark on his chest and HELLO what else could that mean. (part 2 in the next ask)

Part 2: Or imagine derek trying everything to get rid of his mark, because the bullet shaped mark was the reason his young naive self approached the argents, and KATE, in the first place. And we all know how that went.

The water was cold as it splashed on his face – cold and refreshing – and his hands stayed pressed against his face for a long minute, his eyes closed and a tired sigh leaving him. Slowly, Derek dropped his hands from his face and grabbed the edges of the sink. He hesitated before finally lifting his gaze to the mirror in front of him.

His eyes, blank with a hint of sadness and bags heavy underneath them, found the bullet shaped mark slightly to the left of the center of his chest immediately.

Derek had been five when his mom had sat him down and told him about soulmates and soulmarks for the first time. And because of his soulmark, it had also been when he was told of hunters and how he needed to be careful. More careful than any of his siblings and any of his friends.

He had been five and hadn’t listened. He hadn’t listened when he was thirteen either, nor when he was sixteen and approached the woman he thought he was his soulmate.

It had been years – long and painful years – and he had yet to forgive himself for that. He doubted he ever would, and looking at his soulmark made him feel sick to his stomach.

My dear newbie yarn benders,

I love you. You’re wonderful and fabulous and energized about seeing a cool project on the inter-webs and have finally said “yes! I think I could do that! This is the one that will get me into knitting/crochet” With all the excitement and joy in the world you go to the craft store, grab the coolest looking yarn (in the best color, duh) and the cheapest needles/hook you can find (If if needles are too intimidating, you opt for the knitting loom. It comes in a 3 pack! score!). You follow the instructions as best you can with dreams of your project turning out exactly like the professionally taken photograph. Oh my naive, beautiful newbie yarn bender, you are on a craft high. Head so far in the clouds that you don’t realize what has happened until it’s done. We’ve all been here at some point, no matter how skilled a person is.

My lovelies. Please learn from the mistakes that have already happened. Take the time to learn about gauge and value the materials needed. I am most definitely NOT saying buy the most expensive stuff. I am saying that skien of yarn that is one dollar more will likely make you enjoy the finished product bounties more than the value of one dollar.

Take the top picture. This was most definitely made on a knitting loom. Im personally not a huge advocate of these. They’re great for learning how knitting works. Not great for endless feats of creativity. You’re limited by the size of the loom which limits you to the size of the yarn as well as the size of the object you make. For something that will not ladder (the long horizontal bits between the “V” stitches) you need yarn thick enough to touch the stitch next to it when wrapped around the loom. In the case of the photo, yarn far too thin was used.

The next picture looks like it could be arm knitting. Which was a fad I loved. Can we bring this back instead of those pony tail hats? The larger the needle, in this case your arm, the larger yarn you need. The original appears to have multiple yarns being used. Perhaps our newbie knitter didn’t realize that’s an option? Lesson here: Larger needles, larger yarn. Smaller needles, smaller yarn.

The last picture. This crocheted hippo went through the stretcher! oh no! This is a case of right yarn, wrong size hook. When your needle/hook is larger than your yarn and you put it under tension (in this case, stuffing it) the created fabric will stretch (more-so demonstrated in the first picture). Amigurumi is also hard as shit. The people who do it very well are incredible talented. We should all bow before their prowess. Please don’t try an amigurumi (small figurine knitting/crochet) as your first or even 5th project!

General rule of thumb: if you don’t want holes in your work look for yarn and needle/hook approx same size in diameter.

Alas, you have returned for the craft store. Heading the advice you’ve gotten complimentary yarn and needle/hook. TIME TO START THE CRAFT JUICE!

NO.

NOT YET.

“but whyyyy?” you whine

Because we must first test the yarn.

“But tests are boooooring” says the yarn.

I agree, talking yarn. Tests are boring and terrible and holy crap tell you if you’re doing something right or wrong. This is useful information to know before creating something beautiful with your HANDS

Also my dear newbie yarn bender, practice makes a better yarn bender. Resist the urge to pump out something fast. Pinterst lied to you. It’s not going to take 1 hour. It will take at least 3 hours and two trips to the craft store. Accept this now. Knitting/crochet is slow ASF. Accept this now. Or find a different hobby.

So loop on some stitches and knit or crochet your joyous heart out. Then measure it once you get around 5 inches. Count the stitches horizontally and vertically. Then refer to the chart above and make sure everything agrees. Got 12 stitches per 4 inches and using DK (3) yarn? Time to change needles sizes or get your gorgeous self some bulky yarn. Or get yourself some bulky yarn anyhow. Treat yo’self.

i love you newbie yarn benders! Go forth and create and learn

hi- I was wondering if u had any process gifs of your background art? like how do you go about adding the textures? is it at the final stage that you do it? I'm also interested in working as a bg artist after I graduate and you're a really big source of inspiration!

hello! i dont have any process gifs but i put together a little tut for you, i feel like im overdue for a proper one :8) i want to make a more in depth tutorial on background painting (maybe a video?!!?!) but for right now i’ll just address your questions on texture if that’s okay!

here is an ultra basic bg we’re gonna spruce up. keep in mind i’m not going to talk about lighting and composition really so, try to put that out of your mind for now. anyway, there is no texture or edge difference in this yet. everything is smooth and samey (but there is a little bit of atmospheric perspective in the color). the most important thing at this stage is that every unique shape or plane is on its own layer. this is because all texture and lighting will be clipped to the corresponding layer.

sorry this is kind of ugly but this is how i arrange my layers LOL. everything is arranged on planes. i think of it like cut paper stacked on top of each other.

make a clipping mask for the texture you’ll put on each shape. i talk a bit about clipping masks and how to use them here. normally i’d have a clipping mask for texture, shadow, and light, so it can get a little crazy when you have a lot of layers but it’s invaluable for experimenting and getting things just right.

ALRIGHT SO LETS TALK ABOUT ACTUAL TEXTURE. i think about texture as having two functions: 1. to draw the viewer’s eye to where you want it to be, and 2. to describe the material/feel of objects. for our very first texture, we’re going to put some snow on the front tree. im using a variety of brushes, please check my FAQ for a full list. since i want the viewer to focus mostly on the front tree, i’m going to put the most texture on it. to answer your question about when i add texture, i usually just kind of follow my intuition and use it when i feel it’s needed. i will almost definitely go back and add/take away throughout the process of the image. a lot of things change and it’s cool to change your mind throughout. i don’t really follow solid “steps” for every piece, they’re always different for me!

now i am just continuing to add texture here and there. the middle ground trees get a bit of snow, but it’s subdued enough to not be the focal point. as well, i added some texture to the snow because i wanted the front plane to be the one you look at the most. everything behind the middle ground trees is wholly untouched. now we have a nice contrast between smooth/textured going on! and contrast/opposites is the key to guiding a viewer’s eye.

after all that i decided at last minute that the front plane could use some texture to differentiate it. but looking at it now, i’d probably go back and rethink it. that’s life.

finally! i added some color corrections and some gradients to push back the mountains and trees. i also added some falling snow and an overall paper texture to simulate a snowy feel without having to paint it all. the paper texture is behind the front plane, again to push everything behind it back. i would be very careful about putting a texture over everything, it can really flatten everything or make it look fake/gimmicky. clip it to shapes or erase where necessary.

lastly, a short word about more contrast. here, i am trying to push the contrast between soft and sharp. the only difference between this image and the last step is that i blurred and sharpened some planes. there are multiple ways to think about this, but for me, the photographic approach is easiest to understand and it’s just how i like my art to look. basically, i try to always make my focal point sharp and in focus, and blur other elements.

this felt a bit all over the place….sorry!! but, i hope it helped. i would like to do more in-depth tutorials in the future so please hang with me til then. thanks for the ask!!

Mermaids

Take a moment and think about mermaids. Think about mermaid who live in the waters of Hawaii, with eyelashes made of sea-foam and tails the color of the sun. Think about mermaids sitting on the bottom of the ocean, watching the surfers above them in fascination and pointing out the patterns and designs on the bottom of their boards like children pointing out stars.

Think about mermaids in the Mediterranean being able to ‘speak human’ but they can only speak the dead languages. Think about Mediterranean mermaids still following old trade routes that ships from thousands of years followed to get from one place to the next.

Think about mermaids from the deep sea, odd colors illuminating off of their skin and tails. Think about them with skin nearly transparent and eerie smiles of teeth like needles and claws. Think about deep sea mermaids with bioluminescent tails three times the length of man.

Think about mermaids the size of whales, their upper body seeming like that of giant. Think about these mermaids swimming in large pods and helping out the smaller mermaids, fascinated by their loose, feathery tails in contrast to their relatively short stiff ones. Think about these mermaids trying to copy the smaller mermaid’s swimming patterns with quick flicks of their tails and instead sending a large splash at a nearby boat.

Think about mermaids in the tropics, with fancy fins that seem to ripple and blow in the current, creating illusions of movement to people above. Think about mermaids with fins that look like feathers who like to jump out of the water as if they’re flying before diving back into the sea in giggles. Think about topical mermaids with tails that reflect the colors of the sky and color the ocean with colors that people never thought the ocean could turn.

Think about mermaids in rivers who slither across the floor of the water like snakes and pinch at peoples toes like crayfish. Think about these mermaids living by huge waterfalls, the ones with dams built over them having long since been abandoned in favor for some other point of the river, even if it isn’t a traditional waterfall home. Think about river mermaids meeting with river spirits and nymphs and discussing daily events while listening to motorboats jet past above them.

Think about mermaids who live in creeks made from inland glacial melt in places like Glacier. Think about them sitting contentedly under a long thin waterfall, watching as cars march across the windy road far far above. Think about them writing messages on the cliff walls with the rocks from the bottom of their creeks. Think about them with short but pliable tails that they use to flit over rapids and jump playfully over bridges surpassing their domain.

Think about mermaids who live in streams of glacial melt in places like Greenland. Think about them being able to watch the stars above them in fascination through the clear blue water. Think about them dodging through the inside of large icy glaciers, sleeping on thick sheets of ice that seem to just barely be holding onto the glacier but which their family has slept on for years. Think about them with tails so blue that they seem to glow even when they’re twenty feet underwater, a melody of pastels.

Think about mermaids in the far north, with eyelashes frosted over and lips as blue as the water around them. Think about mermaids in the far north with tails of dark blues, purples and silvers. Imagine them breaking through the ice whenever their waters freeze over and rolling around the top of it in jest, laughing as they skid and slide across the ice. Think about mermaids in the far north who speak in tongues to trolls who live in caves in cliff-faces.

Think about mermaids in the north so old they remember vikings and teach the young Old Norse, believing it to still be the language of the people in the region. Think of mermaids in the Mediterranean that remember the epics that they heard rhapsodes sing of back in the fifth century.

Think about jellyfish mermaids with trailing tentacles instead of tails. Think about them with large umbrella-shaped bells wrapped around their waists like skirts. Think about these mermaids using their tentacles to jokingly sting each other, but never going towards a fish-mermaid in fear of stinging them. Think about jellyfish mermaids with bioluminescent bells and skin with patterns and designs unique to each one of them.

Think about mermaids who live in lava. Because, you know, why not? Think about them with tails of liquid precious metals. Mermaids with tails of liquid gold, nickel, diamonds, and obsidian; their tails not having a definite form and bits and pieces of them flying out into the lava. Think about their tails solidifying as soon as they make contact with water, pulling them down to the bottom of the ocean where they’re forced to live until they die. Think about them daring each other to flip their tails out into the air, seeing who can stay out of the lava the longest and not have their tails solidify.

Think about space mermaids. Think about mermaids who live in the seas of Titan, living in a sea of methane and ethane while watching the thick orange clouds circle above their heads. Think about mermaids on Enceladus, living deep in the interior next to the warm water. Think about adventurous mermaids swimming up into the cooler waters to try to see the ice fountains on the planet’s icy surface, most of them being sucked out and launched into space.

Think about mermaids on Europa. Think about them living in the ocean between the icy surface and the rocky interior. Think about the mermaids grabbing rocks from the interior and scratching long lines across the surface so as to play games and replicate the linear fractures on the surface. Think about these mermaids who live in the deep black darkness of the ocean, but swim up to the thinner parts of the ice sheet of the planet to watch the stars and galaxies light up around them when they aren’t facing Jupiter. Think about these mermaids having different constellations that they point out to others, different myths based off of them and how they arrived in the sky.

Just think about mermaids.

Do you have any tips for composition?? I'm a beginner on that and I really love the way you do it

thank you! (again ive never had any real training in any of this) but i would say! know your basic composition rules/template things- golden ratio, golden spiral, etc, first of all. For me personally, i draw a lot of wide open spaces/backgrounds so MOST of my composition are rule-of-thirds ( i really should try the spiral more often).

second, think about line balances/unbalance. it’s about the mood you want to set. for example, with the first drawing i wanted a very laid-back tranquil mood, so i wanted a sense of balance with my composition with the upward slope of one hill being canceled out with the downward slope of the second. for the second one, however, i wanted some energy, so i sought to create an upset with the lines.

third, i’d consider color balances/ imbalances. colors have SO much say in where your eye travels around the picture (and also im a color FREAK). you can use darker colors to frame a picture if your piece feels too big and empty and you want the focus to narrow down without actually making the canvas smaller:

if you want the viewer’s eyes to just travel around the picture and take the whole thing in, distribute colors evenly throughout the canvas. (sorry it’s so messy, but you get the point) think about the distribution of hue, saturation, and darkness/lightness.

if you want them to focus on that ONE thing, you can concentrate saturation, brightness, warmness etc to make the area pop. i used all three in these drawings!

also! @genicetea has some NEEAATT stuff on drawing the viewer’s eye and contrasts and composition on her twitter so if you want something that actually makes sense go there!

hope that helps a little! and sorry for the long post but you all should really expect that by now :’)

Hi! I love your blog so much! If it's not too much trouble, could I request RFA (+ Saeran if possible?) after the RFA party? I'm dying for fluff ;0;

Hope this helps your fluff craving~ Enjoy!

Zen:

  • He wanted to take you away from the press and reporters
  • So, Zen takes you downtown to a secluded cafe
  • But instead of sitting down to drink the coffee, he takes you around the little town
  • You two walk into little shops and see all the items
  • He takes you to a bridge nearby to see the cityscape
  • You two spend most of the time talking and right before you’re about to leave, he pulls out on of those locks
  • You write both of your name in sharpies and attach it to the bridge
  • He brings you back to his place and you order some take out
  • You’re really tired so you crash on the couch
  • He slides next to you and buries his face in your shoulder
  • You’re running your fingers through his hair and next thing you know, you had both fallen asleep
  • You almost missed the food delivery
  • Despite being exhausted, you two talk late into the night until you fall asleep on the couch again
  • He just carries you gently into the guest room before returning to his own

Yoosung:

  • He wasn’t exactly supposed to be at the party for that long
  • So, once it was over, you and the rest of the members forced him to go back to the hospital to finish his treatment
  • He only has to stay until evening
  • You decided to stay with him the rest of the day
  • He doesn’t have any video games, so you go down to the gift shop and get a pack of cards and a few boardgames
  • You’re mostly talking while playing, and it’s really nice
  • He keeps commenting on all your little habits and quirks, since this is the first day he’s actually seen you
  • When he’s finally discharged, you drive him home and he invites you inside for some coffee
  • Even though you insist he needs rest, you eventually give in
  • As soon as you walk in, it smells like lemon cleaner and vanilla candles, which is so like him
  • He shows you around his place and you find it cute when he gets flustered if you point out one of his collectibles or cute knick knacks
  • Despite his eye, he makes you a cup of coffee and you two talk in the kitchen
  • You can’t stay late and he needs rest, so you eventually have to call it a night
  • But he walks you to his car and gives you a few more soft kisses
  • The sweet taste of coffee accompanies your smile all the way back to your apartment that night

Jaehee:

  • The party was a success and the buzz of all the people made you giddy
  • And besides that, the fact that you and Jaehee were going to be partners for the cafe was beyond exciting
  • Seeing you so ecstatic, Jaehee surprised you by taking you to the cafe she bought right after the party
  • Your enthusiasm was contagious and you two spent your time looking at the empty spot, imagining how you would redecorate the place
  • Afterwards, you drag her to a home improvement store so you can look at paint and color schemes
  • You get a bunch of samples to look at later
  • By the time you’re done there, your extra energy is worn out and Jaehee is also crashing from the day’s activities
  • You invite her back to the apartment since it’s closer than her place
  • You guys pick up some food on the way back and eat up a storm
  • You’re talking about so many things, sometimes funny and silly moments of your favorite singers and other times very deep and serious conversations about your lives and future
  • In the end, you lose track of time and it’s already past midnight
  • Trying to get Jaehee a little more out of her shell, you tell her just to stay the night
  • She’s hesitant at first, but she’s so comfortable with you now she agrees
  • You bring out extra pillows and blankets and you two continue your conversation over a DVD of Zen’s latest musical
  • Eventually, you get tuckered out and you both fall asleep on the couch

Jumin:

  • The last eleven days had been a rollercoaster of events with the party and with Jumin sorting out his own emotions
  • So, Jumin hoped to take you on a calmer outing after the party
  • At first, he suggested a high end fancy restaurant, but you asked if he wanted to take a stroll in the park first
  • You both change into more comfortable clothes
  • Turns out Jumin has three outfits that aren’t part of a suit
  • He’s a bit stiff at first, since he’s not used to just walking and talking casually
  • But then you slip your hand in his and you feel him relax
  • He’s intrigued by the small vendors selling ice cream or cotton candy
  • He buys you both some shaved ice and you find a quiet bench
  • He takes some blurry photos of you and the lake and even some of the ducks
  • Once dinner rolls around, he gets his wish and takes you to a nice restaurant
  • You can’t help but love the contrast between the two outings, but somehow it brings out the best of Jumin
  • After the meal, he takes you onto a secluded balcony on the top floor of the restaurant
  • He takes your hands and thanks you for everything in the past few days
  • You say a few loving words of your own
  • For the first time, everything is slow and beautiful and you take in every second
  • At the end of the night, he accompanies you as far as he can to return you safely to the apartment
  • And as you lay down in bed that night, you can’t help but feel a shift in your life for the better

Seven:

  • You two didn’t get to go to the first RFA party, so the second one is very exciting for you both
  • But afterwards, you were both a little drained from all the guests and interactions
  • So, he takes you to a nice diner to get some milkshakes and discuss what happened
  • You both exchange stories of awkward moments or funny incidents during the party until you’re laughing so hard your sides hurt
  • Feeling a bit more energized, you both want to do something else before you head home
  • Impromptu trip to the nearest planetarium it is
  • It’s actually rather peaceful and sentimental for you both since it’s something you two talked about doing the first time you met
  • Since it’s still the middle of the day, there aren’t a lot of people there
  • You and Seven get to share some private moments where you’re just holding hands or resting your head on his shoulder as the show plays
  • When it comes to the other displays, you two start taking stupid pictures next to them and adding funny captions and filters on Clapchat
  • You stay there longer than necessary
  • Mostly because you both have a blast in the gift shop looking and hundreds of quirky space themed things before choosing one thing to buy
  • Around dinner, you two head to his place since you thought it might be nice to cook a meal and share it with Saeran as well
  • Only, you made the mistake of laying on his couch for a few minutes to scroll through your phone after such a long trip…and Seven made the mistake of joining you
  • Saeran is waking you both up a few hours later with some take out he ordered already waiting in the kitchen

Saeran:

  • He didn’t feel comfortable coming to an RFA party until it was about the third one you planned
  • Everything was really great, and he even talked to a few guests
  • But the crowd got overwhelming and you found him in the hallway by the time the party was over
  • You could tell he was drained so you drag him to the ice cream shop
  • He was expecting to stay there and eat it, but instead you take his hand and start walking
  • He thinks you have a plan, but halfway through town and realizes you don’t
  • So he just goes along with you as you grab his hand and swing it back and forth
  • He surprises you when he pulls you into a bus that travels to the town over
  • He’s not used to being “spontaneous” but he wanted to try
  • You guys find a small little bakery where you grab something to eat
  • Then as you’re wandering, you pass by a cat cafe and you can’t resist going in
  • At first, Saeran is super jumpy with all the cats around, but there’s one reddish kitten that calmly jumps onto his lap and sits there
  • You watch as a small smile grows on his lips when he pets it
  • At one point, you even lost him in the place because he was following the one cat around
  • He’s reluctant to leave, finding the cats therapeutic by the end
  • You guys catch a bus to take you back home, and thankfully get some seats in the back
  • You rest your head on his shoulder and end up falling asleep
  • He hesitantly wraps his arm around you and pulls you close as he looks through the window at the passing scenery
  • For the first time in a very long time, he feels at peace and he’s even a little sad when the bus comes to your stop

Hi. I'm having some concerns about my main character. I have the vision of making her darker skinned but I don't want to upset anyone over the representation. I'm worried that since I am white as a vampire people will criticizes against the character. I have read many reviewers of books and it's a big worry, a reason I can't move forward with my boom.

This is a good question, and not one I am qualified to answer for you, but I will link you to some very good articles written by people of color that may point you in the right direction.

Some general tips I can give you are:

  • “darker skinned” will not be enough to build a character off of, and if you are going to write a POC, make sure you know their heritage and culture and research thoroughly what it is like to to grow up and live in whatever country (whether it be the US or not) that they live in and how they will be treated because of their skin color, heritage culture, etc, in that society. You will have to do extensive research on institutionalized racism, white privilege, and intersectionality with sexualities, gender, and other parts of a person’s identity. You cannot simply describe their skin color and think you are done with it.
  • Be open and receptive and listen. If you are going to write what you don’t know, you better make sure you are ready to actually learn and do more than the bare minimum. You don’t have to be a bad and evil person to be racist; many racists ideas and attitudes are so ingrained our society, we don’t realize that we are perpetuating them, and don’t realize their affect. Be open to discussing privilege, own what you don’t know, and always strive to learn more and correct your behavior. Being good intentioned doesn’t mean you won’t make mistakes, and it is a constant learning process, so don’t let your good intentions or white guilt stop you from learning. Don’t go into this research process with your defenses up.

Here are some articles to take a look at:

  • “Oh! That’s him right now” you grin at your bully’s gaping mouth
  • Seven rolls down the window and taps his fingers on his sunglasses
  • You’re about to walk up to him when he raises up a pack of Honey Buddha Chips
  • “Look who got a discount on another box!”
  • He’s grinning ear to ear
  • You chuckle nervously. “Nevermind…I don’t know him.”
  • Seven calls your name and opens the door
  • Your bully is still shook
  • You walk up to him and sigh
  • “You’re such a dork, but I love you.”

Saeran:

  • You two were at the park together
  • You notice your old bully taking a walk nearby
  • You point them out to Saeran and explain
  • The bully sees you and starts walking towards you with a smug smile
  • You groan, knowing what’s coming
  • But then suddenly, your bully pivots on his heel and walks in the opposite direction
  • You turn to Saeran who’s smiling innocently at you
  • You still don’t know what happened…but you’re still thankful you avoided the awkward situation

V:

  • He took you to the museum for a date
  • He steps aside for a few moments to take some photos of the exhibit
  • While you’re waiting, your bully comes up to you
  • He doesn’t brag too much about himself
  • Instead, his comments start to become degrading
  • You can barely get a word in edge-wise, and the comments were pretty hurtful
  • V steps in between you guys, almost shielding you
  • He gives the guy a polite smile, though there’s an edge in his voice
  • “I don’t think that’s how you talk a lady.”
  • The bully is taken aback since barely anyone stood up to him before he backs away
  • V asks if you’re alright

Hi Hi! I've been interested in secular witchcraft for a long time, but i'm finally starting to stop just researching, and I want to try and start practicing! I've collected a bunch of resources, but what are some of the first things you'd suggest picking up from the store? Candles, herbs, oils, etc? Also, any beginner posts you could link me to would be wonderful. I'm all ears! Have a wonderful day <3

Hey, congrats on deciding to practice and doing your research! Are you excited? Nervous? Enjoying what you’ve seen so far? Is Tumblr your primary resource? :)

I wanna learn so much from new witches omg. (There’s irony in there.)

Well, it honestly depends on what you wanna do and use yourself. Because personally, I picked up a few of each - I got some tealights from WalMart, bought some cheap incense from somewhere else, picked up some dried herbs from the grocery store that I didn’t already have in the kitchen, and found like five or six crystals I liked from Green Earth. I spent maybe like twenty bucks. That was my beginner’s witch kit.

But, again, it all comes down to what you want to use. Are you more interested in working with candles in magic? Candle magic *is* a really easy but effective method of magic, and candles are everywhere, and really cheap. Most spells use candles in them, not necessarily as the focal point of the spell, but they also do wonders for boosting energies. A bag of 100 tea lights goes a long way in witchcraft. Color correspondences can help, but isn’t necessarily required.

Or maybe crystals are where you wanna go. Crystals have amazing energy, but are a bit more on the pricey side. It can also be hard for people who don’t know a lot about them to tell them apart - the “danger” in this is being swindled by people claiming their crystals are something they’re not. Doesn’t mean they won’t work for their “declared” intent, necessarily, but it means you just dropped a lot of money on something worth a tenth of that.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t worthwhile to work with them, though. Because they’re an amazing tool, really - you just gotta do some more research, and be confident in where you’re buying from. Finding a reliable dealer with decent prices is where it’s at. But then, once you’ve got some crystals, they’re really versatile. They can be used on their own, or in conjunction with other spells, put them in jars and sachets, or in poppets, make grids, use them to charge other things, just stick like ten of them in your pockets - boom, witchcraft.

Oils aren’t something I necessarily recommend, to be honest. Not because they aren’t useful, because they are, just like any other tool can be (just gotta know how to use them). I just don’t know a lot about essential oils. xD If that is the area you wanna go in, however, it’s worthwhile to know that you’re gonna want to do some more research on the topic, and be wary of any allergies you may have, and for the love of god don’t put a crapton of pure oil straight on your skin.

Herbs is a little bit of a tricky area too, especially when using them as medicine. It requires a lot of research and safety if you plan on ingesting herbs for actual remedial purposes. If you just want to use dried herbs in, like, jars and spell bags, it isn’t nearly as bad, but you still want to keep an eye out for any poisonous / toxic plants and allergies. The stuff you can get pre-dried from grocery stores and dollar stores are honestly enough in most cases, and there’s lots of substitutes for more expensive or exotic plants, depending on intent.

If you wanna grow your own herbs too, that’s an option, but another area I don’t know a lot about, so I can’t give you any more advice on that besides do some more research. (It seriously never ends, so I hope you like studying.)

I guess this sort of answers your questions, but not really in the way you wanted. So, long story short, what you pick up depends on what and how you want to practice. However, I’ll give you a list of items I would recommend, purely based on my own craft, but I feel they’re pretty good staples to have all around.

  • candles - versatile as all hell; can be used on their own or in any other spell; bags of white tea lights are super cheap and easy to find; worry about colors later; scents can be used as correspondences as well but don’t hinder in any way
    • also, if you can’t have open flames for whatever reason, they have LED / battery powered candles in some dollar stores now; not to mention, tech magic?!
  • matches - they smell nice, and can light candles; suuuper cheap, but in bulk; unless you’re allergic to sulphur, then just a lighter will work
  • herbs - dried herbs from the grocery store seriously do the trick just as well as fresh / organic stuff; Bulk Barn / Barrel has a lot of awesome stuff for super cheap too; start off with just a few general / all-purpose ones, and then add to your collection as you go along; it starts to build up over time, trust me
    • sea salt - cleansing and protection; can be used as a base for most herbal mixtures
    • rosemary - considered a substitute for most other herbs
    • basil - has like a shit ton of correspondences
    • cinnamon is useful to have too
    • if you wanna curse, pepper flakes, paprika, or cayanne pepper should do the trick
  • jars - do I even need to explain?; dollar store, man; even thrift stores have some pretty amazing and cool looking bottles and stuff
  • notebooks - not something necessarily overly witchy, but more so to write down what you learn; trust me, you’ll wanna do that, especially with correspondences; also, sigils
    • also, though, keeping a blog can be a great way to have a magical book; can be password detected / kept secret; tags are useful for organiazation; and then you have us assholes in the community to hang out with too xD
    • writing utensils are also kinda required to, you know, write in books; black Sharpies are useful for actually drawing on stuff - candles, sachets, etc.; good for sigil work
  • scrap fabric - but some cool patterns from thrift stores or whatever; useful for making sachets and poppets
    • sealable plastic bags can do in a pinch though, really; also can be drawn on with Sharpie for easy sigil application
  • string / thread - tie up bags, herb bundles; make sachets and poppets; also useful for bindings, and that’s a good skill to know
  • mini sewing kit - super useful to have in general, and all parts of it can be used for something, somewhere
  • tea bags - seriously, tea has magical properties too; super discreet; and easy as hell; play around with different flavors for intents
  • crystals - clear quartz is super cheap and all-purpose; buy like five of them and just use them over and over; again, another thing it might be useful to have like three or four basic ones and then build your collection over time; that’s how most of us get our arsenal of supplies
    • clear quartz - substitutes for any other crystal
    • amethyst - super cheap and easy to find; variant of quartz; good for sleep and peace and divination; also purple
    • tiger’s eye - I’m biased because this is my favorite crystal; good for protection and courage; did I mention it’s awesome to look at?
  • incense - not necessarily required, but I like to have it; smells nice, useful; so many scents; can be found pretty cheap all over too
    • again, if you can’t have open flames in your place, you can try those wax melters; definitely pricier, but versatile for magic as well; and I mean, they just smell, so, good; my mom has one with like sugar cookie wax cubes; and I come home and think she’s baking, and I get super excited; but it’s a lie

So, yeah, that’s my list, and reasons for what I wrote. That’s just some ideas to get you started. If you choose a path that doesn’t need those things in them, obviously don’t bother then. And depending on what “type of magic” you wanna do, your basic supply list might be very different. For instance, a sea witch probably won’t care so much about kitchen herbs, and stock up on sand and seaweed, sea shells and salt water.

Since you asked for beginner’s posts, too, you can have my whole list:

I did it! I made a post that wasn’t mostly links! :o Anyway, sorry for my smartass mouth, I was having fun with this. I hope you enjoyed reading, and I hope it gave you some ideas, and helped you out! Good luck! And if you need any more clarification or have more questions, you know where to find me. :D

100% agree on your analysis of Jimin as a Slytherin!!! I know a lot of people (including myself) are shocked Namjoon put himself in Griffindoor over Ravenclaw though. I'm dying to hear your thoughts on this!!

HELLO and thank you! I’m glad you agree! And if anyone is curious here is a link to my thoughts on why jimin is the perfect slytherin. EDIT: And here is why Jungkook is a Ravenclaw!

//cracks knuckles MY TIME HAS COME

So… Namjoon. I, like you and a ton of other people, was really confused about him being in Gryffindor. But, the more I thought about it, the more I really came to not only accept it, but believe that he is a Gryffindor through and through. And please be advised this is going to devolve in to me gawking over how great of a human being Namjoon is, so if you don’t want to read about that please close your browser and think about why you don’t agree that he’s better than everyone else. okay?

okay.

Namjoon is a Gryffindor to the core, not a Ravenclaw

First of all, Namjoon supposedly sorted everyone else, but I have a small sneaking suspicion that he may not have sorted himself. We know he’s a fan of the movies at least, and he’s fluent in English, so if he’s a fan and he has access to sorting quizzes on Pottermore and other sites, is it so hard to believe that he hasn’t at least tried a few? Seriously, even the most casual of fans have tried getting sorted. It’s not that crazy of a thought. So… What if they put him in Gryffindor over Ravenclaw?

(I mean, when asked to do a British accent the first thing that he quotes was “Shut up Malfoy!”. If that ain’t the most Gryffindor thing…)

Also, Namjoon is a really humble guy. If he DID sort himself, I feel like he’d be the type of person who would shy away from saying “I’m smart, so I should be in Ravenclaw”. He’s always been pretty modest about his intelligence. And just because he is, doesn’t mean we should be. Seriously, Namjoon can be a goof but if you’re ever in doubt about how crazy smart he is, please watch this.

He has no problems recognizing the intelligence of others though – he raves about Jungkook being good at everything he does, and even gave him the nickname “Golden Maknae”,  so is it such a wonder he put Jungkook in Ravenclaw? (It should be noted that Ravenclaws also have a reputation for being eccentric and quirky. Prime example, Luna. If that isn’t a perfect descriptor for Jungkook idk what is)

So let’s look at what the common traits of Gryffindor are, shall we?

Such character traits of students sorted into Gryffindor are courage, chivalry, and determination. They can also be short-tempered. [x]

Okay so, courage. I could go on and on about how brave Namjoon is but like… we’ll be here all day. So let me keep this short and point you in the direction of one thing in particular that he has done. THIS TWEET.

It’s Rap Monster. A song about homosexuality. I heard this song before but I didn’t know the lyrics, now I know them and I like the song twice as much. I recommend Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Same Love. http://hiphople.com/subtitle/619392

I have a lot of feelings about this tweet. And a lot of theories about WHY he tweeted that too – but no one wants to hear about those so that’s for another life post.

First – speaking out in support of homosexuality in Korea is a pretty huge deal, because homosexuality isn’t a really accepted lifestyle there. (It isn’t really accepted anywhere, truly, but you all know that.)

Here’s a pretty recent list on idols who support LGBT communities.  It’s a pretty god damn short list. I use the term ‘support’ loosely bc this article seems to equate ‘having gay friends’ as being a supportive ally. But Namjoon stands out pretty hard in this list because he doesn’t just say ‘i love my gay friends!’, he outright spoke out in support of homosexuality.

But Kiki, you say… Namjoon is hugely popular. He’s one of the biggest stars in Kpop. He could say whatever he wants now, right?

Well yeah, he can. But here’s the kicker! Look at the timestamp on that tweet. He tweeted that before they debuted

Namjoon was months away from launching his dream career, something he’d worked his entire life for. He was from a pretty small unknown company whose only claim to fame before that was that group that had two members blackmail an actor over something or another. He couldn’t afford bad press, and yet here comes Kim fucking Namjoon with his balls of steel willing to throw that all down the drain because god dammit he was going to tell the entire world about how much he supported the LGBT community and anyone who wanted to stand in his way of doing so could eat a fuckin dick. He could have kept his heckin mouth shut but he didn’t???

????

moving on.

Chivalry.

Chivalry is defined as:

1.the combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, esp courage, honour, justice, and a readiness to help the weak

2.courteous behaviour, esp towards women

Courage, honor, justice, what I just talked about describes those things pretty perfectly.

I’d like to talk about honor for a sec though. Let’s look at a pretty famous Gryffindor – Ron. Ron was one of a shitload of children in his family. He outwardly always grumbled about not getting attention or whatever, but as a person, he was all about family. He put his family first, he didn’t gripe too hard about hand-me-downs to his parents because he knew they were trying their best, and he defends people he cares about.

There’s that famous scene (that I’m still salty they changed in the movies) where Hermione wants to answer a question and Snape gets mad at her for it. And he defends her – why ask the question if you’re not looking for an answer?

Ron always, always put his family first. So does Namjoon.

Take this gifset for example. The whole set is great and shows how much he really takes care of his members, his family, but this is what he does when he’s around them and also in front of people. Not all that surprsiing.

But please, please please please pay attention to the first gif. For people who don’t know the context, he was asked if he’d choose going solo or bangtan. He DID NOT KNOW HE WAS BEING FILMED. He could have shown his true colors and said that he preferred a solo career and all the glory, but even when given the chance to be completely open, his heart was still with Bangtan.

Another great example of Namjoon being completely selfless. Everyone here is praising themselves (and they have a right too, don’t get me wrong, you’re all great four for all of you) but when it gets to him, Namjoon says “We’ve always been pretty good.” We. Not I, not me, we. Everyone else is giving themselves some much deserved praise, but Namjoon is stuck on we are good, we’ve always been good.

Also don’t forget how important blood-related family is to him too.

And don’t you dare forget how important you, his extended family, is to him either.

Readiness to help the weak. I mean this goes without saying right?

And if you want to take courteous behaviour, esp towards women, literally, look at their glass-ceiling line in Not Today, that they said they used specifically knowing what it meant. and look who is credited for writing the lyrics! What’s that? It’s Namjoon? Wow, I did not see that one coming.

Speaking of lyrics – talk about having courage. Look at the lyrics he wrote for Reflection and Always.

They can also be short-tempered.

Okay so this doesn’t really apply to Namjoon. But I wanted to include it in there because it fittingly applies to another Gryffindor we know of… Namjoon wasn’t playing around when he sorted these guys. Bonus, here you can observe a hufflepuff and (fond) gryffindor in their natural habitat.

So let’s recap. Namjoon is pretty selfless, extremely caring of his friends and family, a feminist, an outspoken ally for those who are mistreated, and is so god damn intelligent everyone REALLY thought he belonged in Ravenclaw.

Wait a minute, I feel like I’ve heard about this person before… There was another Gryffindor like this, I’m sure of it… it’s on the tip of my tongue…

Ah right.

I’m not saying Namjoon is our version Hermione Granger, but… that’s exactly what I’m saying.

The Tale Of How A Girl Scout Stole From Me

So listen–

My roommate in college is a Girl Scout leader, and her scouts really wanted to explore a dorm room because they think it’s cool, being in college and all. So I let these girls in my room, just kind of smiling and them being really excited and thinking it was rad and such. Now I was sitting in my lofted bed the entire time, so I wasn’t really paying that much attention when they were looking at my stuff underneath me. One was crouching below me, while another one was talking to me, distracting me (we’ll get to her later), and then the other one came back up, and she stopped talking to me. After they leave, I get out of the bed to close our blinds. The cord is right by where I keep all my gems and rocks that I collect, and I noticed my palm-size citrine was missing. I looked on the floor, around it and everything and could not find any shards from a fall or anything. It wouldn’t have been that big a deal had I not just got it a week ago from my aunt who got it for me because of the meanings and spiritual stuff surrounding it, so it means a lot to me.

I didn’t want to jump to conclusions, but I texted my roommate asking if by any chance one of the girls had accidentally picked it up or something, and I didn’t get a response.

Now I was on a time limit because if the meeting ended and all the girls went their separate ways, I would probably lose this rock forever. It shouldn’t have been that big a deal, but at this point I just needed to know if a ten year old stole from me.

I called my roommate after she didn’t respond for about fifteen minutes, and finally she answered and said she read the texts and she was asking them at that exact moment. None were ‘fessing up. But then one said “I have one exactly like that, that size, that color, but I brought it from home.” My roommate immediately knew there was some shady shit going on there, so she asked to see it. This kid opens up this flimsy little folder and had stuffed my rock away into the little pocket. My roommate took picture of it, and me, being oblivious to what the situation was, confirmed that was my rock and I was so glad it was found. Even after that, she kept with the story, kept saying it was hers, got it from home, so on. And THE OTHER GIRL FROM EARLIER was defending her saying “Yea, that’s her rock, she showed me earlier” and I feel so used??? By ten year olds?? Bamboozled?? They plotted against me to take my rock, they had a plan and everything? I had so much shit underneath my bed and on the window sill, tsum tsum’s, hello kitty stuff, candy, things I wouldn’t notice were missing, but they had to pull the ultimate heist. Thinking they can get away with it. I think not.

It gets better.

Then her dad shows up. She immediately twisted her story into that she had gotten from school. Where from school? Her locker. How’d it get into her locker? She said she didn’t know, it just showed up one day. The dad kept interrogating her, but she was not budging. My roommate said that she would bring the rock to have me look at it, and that we would look to make sure that I hadn’t just misplaced mine, and she would bring it back if it was not mine, trying to be like a good leader, like she is, but the little girl responded with “Well it’s mine, but she can have it” trying make me look bad.

Now, it’s been a few hours since then, and we just got an email from one of the parents saying she had confessed and her reason was because she has low self-esteem. The subject line was “‘Her name’ and the Rock” and I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in a while.

TL;DR: Lesson learned, don’t trust Girl Scouts, don’t bring them into your home. You will be ROBBED and you’ll never want to buy another girl scout cookie in your life.

ACNL Witchcraft

I’ve gotten back into playing acnl recently and been noticing so much witchy stuff you can do!! A lot of it is up to your own interpretation & you have to make your own correspondences but I wanted to post about it so here ya go

-divination based on which gem you get from the gem rock each day
-could also do this with fossils or gyroids but gems already have correspondence resources so they’re easier
-seashell divination!!
-Katrina is literally a fortune teller built into the game, USE HER
-you could especially use the lucky clothing piece of the day in a luck spell if you have a similar thing irl!!
-using villagers as tarot of some sort, coming up with correspondences for each and depending on if they’re moving out, in, or staying, use that for divination(ie if a lazy villager is moving out it could mean nows your chance to get shit done)
-for the correspondences you could base it on their looks(color, clothing style), language(catchphrase, quote), species, personality(lazy, cranky, etc) & more, it should be easy to discover your own correspondences! (:
-you could also time travel to do this faster/get readings as many times as you want per day
-altars for deities in rooms!! You could even have specific characters for specific deities
-eating fruit/anything else edible like cake in honor of deities or as an offering of sorts
-ik I have a lot of divination on this post as is but divining with flowers!! based on the colors of them and/or what kind of flower it is!! you can even do this based on placement of the flowers(ie if it’s near a river it can be linked to water correspondences, or specifically river correspondences)
-I SWEAR THIS IS THE LAST DIVINATION ONE divining with letters received from villagers,, gifts are bonus points
-like sending them a letter with a question(gift included or not) and using the letter they send back as an answer to the question, the paper they used can also be relevant(lotus, firework, etc), and any gifts they give you
-doing spells IN GAME!! like you can set up everything!! you have access to crystals, flowers, seashells(sea witchcraft anyone?), fruits(kitchen witchcraft!!), it’s a cool way to do low budget witchcraft!!
-you can also use fish and bugs in spells!! and literally anything really there’s a ton of furniture and clothes and oh boy think of the possibilities?? amazing
-candles are in the game too but you don’t have a wide selection
-if you don’t have all the materials for a spell irl finish it in game!!
-using lucky items as a boost in spells!!
-the emotion things you can get(idr what they’re called or w/e) for intent in spellwork
-you could do things like curses by burying an object representing a person then burying pitfalls all around them
-or a blessing but with crystals itself of pitfalls or something
-you get the idea
-SIGILS USING RELEVANT ITEMS. money sigil? place money bags(or anything else in the game you can get corresponding to money) in the shape of the sigil. love sigil? there’s so many rose options and each color can mean different things, go for it
-sigil fireworks
-need to bury something in a spell but for example it’s not biodegradable, or you can’t bury something for some reason? just do it in game!! you could put it behind a house or something if you don’t wanna ruin the aesthetic of your town
-disposing of spellwork items by selling them to Reese
-or by mailing them away
-public works projects have so much potential i don’t know where to start, I might come up with some specific ideas later but for now just think about it yourself, it ain’t hard to figure out(fire pits, fountains, wind turbines, flower arches, there’s stuff for all the elements and more)
-yknow that thing where you can “report” villagers for being problematic? use that in curses, problematic language for a silence curse for example
-transformation spell? go to shampoodles and get a makeover
-turnips for anything money related as they are a popular source of money in the game
-using npcs themselves in spells. need something to represent crafting? Cyrus. fashion? any of the able sisters or Gracie. anything youth or children related? Timmy & Tommy. so much more but I’ll stop here.
-you can customize so much furniture to have your own patterns, use this!! sigils, color correspondences, there’s so many possibilities!!
-sleep/dream spell? Dream suite. You could even perform spells while in the dream town and have it be kind of like the astral!
-K.K. songs for any music magic, the names themselves can lead to correspondences
-with the added option of the amiibo it makes it possible to make acnl magic more physical and present in this world. you could use the amiibo like a wand of sorts!
-island tours as a base for spells
-doing different initiatives in honor of deities(plant a tree for Demeter for example)
-emoji spells but instead using the extra symbols you have access to in game(heart, star, etc)
-multiple ways to implement this, for example have it be a villagers greeting/catchphrase and every time they say it in activates, you could send a letter to future you with it, put it on the bulletin board, etc
-making a sigil pattern then displaying it at able sisters and for every villagers that starts wearing it, more power for the sigil

I never intended for this post to get so long but you can obviously see how much potential there is! This list was compiled over a couple of days, imagine how much more I could come up with if I spent longer on this!!
If anyone wants me to make a correspondence list for anything acnl(especially villagers/npcs) lmk and I’ll try to do it. (: If you want me to go in depth about any of the ideas above just ask and I can make a separate post about it.
If you do anything based on these ideas please lmk!! I’d love to see what you did!! :D I might post about some of the things I do. ^-^
Some of these ideas could work in other versions of animal crossing but this is intended for acnl. do what works for you

Hi! Your blog is so great! I'm smiling whole day after reading it. Please make a scenario where mc finds out about rfa + v + saeran secret hobby (like collecting super cute hairpins or sewing soft toys:) ) which he/she is ashamed of 'cause thinks that it is unproper for his/her age, sex, life style or for any other reason and doesn't want to show mc this uncool side of his/herself. I think it may be funny:) Thanks in advance!

Sorry it took so long! Hope you like them^^

Zen:

  • You were on your way back home from somewhere, and Zen’s house was on the way
  • So you decided to stop by to say hi
  • When you arrive, he’s walking back into his house from taking out the garbage
  • He’s only wearing slippers, and you can see his long, bright orange socks with racecars on them
  • “Whoa! You got a party on your feet,” you chuckle
  • He yelps and gets super flustered.
  • “MC! Don’t look!”
  • He runs into his room and emerges with plain black socks
  • But the damage is already done
  • You tell him that you think the socks were pretty cute
  • He admits that he’s collected bright, silly socks over the years
  • They add a little spice to his normally hectic schedule–only around the house though
  • When you keep gushing about them, he finally shows you the different ones
  • He’ll make an exception and wear them around you sometimes

Yoosung:

  • Finals call for all nighters
  • He usually wears his little hairpin to keep his bangs out of his eyes
  • But, when he has late nights like this, he pulls out his collection…
  • He has these cute scrunchies and pins to put his hair up in
  • That particular night, he fell asleep with them on
  • In the morning, he remembered he was supposed to meet with you and rushed over to your place
  • You see the cute bunny ear scrunchies tying up his hair in various ponytails and start giggling
  • When he realizes, he’s mortified and starts yanking them out
  • You ask why he didn’t tell you before…or change his pin once in awhile
  • “You might think me childish!”
  • You promise you only think it’s cute and you’ll keep it a secret
  • As long as you can borrow some and you two can get matching ones

Jaehee:

  • You were visiting her one Saturday afternoon
  • You offered to make you both some coffee or tea as she was finishing up some last minute paperwork
  • She recently moved things around so you’re a bit confused where the mugs are
  • You find a huge assortment of them in the back of a cabinet
  • “MC! No, not those!”
  • She’s really embarrassed and tries to shuffle you out of the kitchen
  • But you actually show interest at all the unique mugs she’s collected
  • When she finds this out, she lights up and starts explaining the story of each one
  • You start a tradition where you buy her a mug yearly to add to her collection

Jumin:

  • Elizabeth meows loudly from another room in the penthouse
  • You go to check it out and find that tangled in blue yarn
  • You try to help her as you wonder where all the yarn is coming from
  • Jumin comes in to see the commotion and silently starts wrapping it up again
  • You realize he’s especially quiet
  • When you see the crocheting needle, you start to put two and two together
  • “Jumin…you crochet? You never told me!”
  • “….It’s not exactly something one brags about.”
  • True
  • He explains that it relaxes him on particularly stressful days
  • He showed you a few pieces that he’s made, like scarves and headbands
  • You ask if he could teach you a few things

Seven:

  • He was finally moving out to a place with windows
  • But he has so much junk to sort through first, so he calls you for back up
  • You’re in the process of going through his junk closet when you find a bunch of boxes with different dates on them
  • When you open them, you see so many game consoles…Xbox, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance…
  • When he finds you stumbled upon them, he freaks out
  • You thought his was obsessed with collecting cars? Ha.
  • You ask if he actually needs that many of the old consoles….in different colors
  • “Just trade them in for some cash!”
  • “They’re of sentimental value!”
  • You eventually just let him have his way, compromising to put them in the same box though
  • He makes you pinky swear not to tell Yoosung
  • He’d never hear the end of it

Saeran:

  • You’re writing out a to-do list and your pen runs out of ink
  • You ask Saeran if you can borrow a pencil, as he always seems to have one
  • He nods and tells you to look for a bag on his desk
  • You find a rather large one and open it
  • “No! Not that bag–”
  • But it’s too late
  • You stumble across a bunch of number 2 pencils with cute designs on them
  • Some have turtles on clouds, some have ice cream erasers, and there were so many…
  • He gets super defensive about, that those were the only cheap pencils
  • After a bit of coaxing, you get him to admit that he likes collecting them
  • They make him feel warm inside…especially when he’s doodling
  • You make a point to buy him pencils whenever you’re out shopping now

V:

  • Jumin had once again mentioned something about V’s 20 spoons in the chatroom
  • After visiting V a few times, you know he only has a few forks and knives
  • So, you ask him about the extra spoons
  • He gets a little blushy, but decides to show them to you
  • Each spoon has an intricate design on the handle
  • He says that he picks one up every time he travels to a new country or city
  • He thinks it’s weird because…they’re just utensils
  • But you actually think it’s really cute

I'm sure this will be answered in canon at some point, but for now, do you have any thoughts on Haggar's deal?

I mean, that’s a pretty general topic here.

I think the main mysteries behind Haggar right now are:

  • What caused her to break with Altea the way she did?
  • Who was she before that?
  • What is she to Zarkon?
  • Why is she so abnormally, terrifyingly powerful- and is that a common thread between her and Allura?
  • What happened to her face marks- were they always like that? They’re a completely different color and shape from the rest of the Alteans, which is peculiar considering the fact that both Coran and Allura have their marks as infants would tell us it’s biological.

At this point, I have some theories, but one of the main ones is: I think that Haggar at some point saved Zarkon’s life.

I'm a black writer of sff and I'm feeling really discouraged because I can't find a community of other black folks writing similar stuff. Do you have any advice or recommendations on this topic? I'd really appreciate it!

Building a Community for Fellow Sci-Fi/Fantasy [Black] Writers of Color

Build it and they will come. Sometimes when you can’t find the community you’re looking for, you have to create it.

The Small Details

  • If you’re going to do the preparations in starting a community, made sure you’ve got a place to meet, like an unoccupied classroom, a library room, coffee shop, a closed group page, etc.
  • It’s important to figure out what you want from this community. Is it for exchanging writing and providing constructive criticism? Sharing your woes? Helping each other with publishing resources? A little bit of it all? Again, gather ideas of what people want from the club and set your sights small then expand as you can handle.
  • Be prepared for the time and labor that comes with it. It may be a labor of love, certainly, and comes with many benefits, but if time is tight, do assure you can scoop up adequate time to dedicate to such a group before starting. Perhaps frequency of meeting will be monthly or bi-weekly vs. weekly. Also, get help if you need to, like a backup or co-chair. You don’t have to run the whole show.

Starting a writing community

Start an online, or local community for Black Science Fiction/Fantasy writers. It may be easier to start aiming at a specific community and gaining traction there, vs. say gathering folks in the whole state.

Places to start a community:

  • For an online community, there’s website such as Goodreads, Tumblr, Facebook, Reddit, other forum sites…
  • If you’re in school and it’s allowed, starting a group within the school is a start, or just advertising it as a separate from school deal while welcoming your community as fellow students as members.
  • There’s also your neighborhood and neighboring ones, and expanding with need or if you have the capacity.

Getting the word out:

  • Advertise your group in the right places, when appropriate/allowed. Such as Diverse SF/F forums on Goodreads, libraries, free bulletin boards, or buying a small classified space.
  • On that last point, if you’ve got a community newspaper that is “friendly” towards diversity, see if they would want to write a story about your group. You may have to have one established first, but an article would definitely help build traction.
  • Additionally, It might be useful to gather interest before making any big decisions. See if folks would want to join this community and give them a contact email to reach out and express their interest and what they’d want from the community if they’d join.
  • If it’s an online community you’re building: you may have to be a bit of a spammer and namedrop your community website and details when appropriate and welcome. You could also do this on online pages for local places, but again when allowed and where it’ll be welcome and not annoying.
  • Social Media Recommendations:
  • FiyahLitMag is speculative fiction for Black writers. If you use Twitter, perhaps you should start following Black writers you meet via these connections. -Jess
  • There’s also a Twitter account called Blerds (Black nerds) that might be a resource as well. -Shira

Search harder.

  • The group you’re looking for may already be out there and you just haven’t found it yet. It’ll be easier to join than start one. Get creative and persistent in your search terminology and flip through forums and websites with active communities.
  • Have you tried Meetups.com or similar meetup forums and sites? Are you looking at the community boards, local classes being offered? (Note: Meetup might also be a good place to post and organize your club)
  • If you’re not interested in starting your own thing, you may decide to be more open to SF/F communities that are for Writers of Color and add that into your search too. There’s likely to be Black authors within the group if you still wish to connection with mainly them, too.

I know there’s more helpful advice out there on starting a writing community than I can provide, so give some more searching a go. Good luck!

Most original Dramione stories you've ever read. I'm talking the ones with a unique premise or twist you didn't see coming. Something that isn't usual in this fandom. Can be dark, fluffy, romantic. Whatever. I just want to read something that is like, WOW THAT'S DIFFERENT!

Well, here are some I can think of off the top of my head. I’m only posting the stories that are completed, not the WIPs (there are SO MANY good WIPs out there!):

This turns out to get very confusing very fast, as Hermione finds herself becoming attracted to the wrong person…

Decomposition Of The Soul by hiddenhibernian - Rated: T - 3 Chapters (COMPLETE) - Not all prisoners serve out their sentence in Azkaban. Her steady, sober gaze told me that she knew her only purpose was to be used by me and that she had accepted this.”

Eyes Open by Day Met the Night - Rated: T - 1 Chapter (COMPLETE) - “He’s let the envelope fall into his palm. Peter Pan and the Lost Boy by wicked_lovely (6,323)

Hoseok is cast as Peter Pan in the school play, and all he wants is someone to practice his lines with. Little did he know, he would find his own lost boy this way.

Medicated by sixtieshairdo (1,893)

As they were not allowed to have their mobile phones with them while attending a music show, they were only aware of the stream of ridiculous tweets Yoongi had posted only after the show ended, which led him to frantically worry that Yoongi had gotten himself drunk from their stash of alcohol in the house. Yoongi had not only taken photos of their televised performance and posted them with random captions, he’d also insisted that he loved them all twice, but the icing of the cake was his tweet that he was washing cherry tomatoes, ending it with his iconic Cypher part 3 closing line, “chop chop chop”.

The others had simultaneously groaned and cackled upon reading Yoongi’s tweet-vomit, but Hoseok was out of his mind worried that the stubborn little fool had gotten sick from alcohol poisoning and that he’d find Yoongi lying in a pool of sick once they entered their house.

He didn’t find Yoongi surrounded by his vomit on his bed. In fact, he didn’t find Yoongi on his bed at all.

The Still Point (Of The Turning World) by inkingbrushes (74,943)

Because Yoongi doesn’t know how this started, or how this will end, but he knows this simple fact: he knows that there is a love between them that is much fiercer than the burning sun. There is that love then, and there is that love now, and surely there will be that same love the next time.

(Or: the one where they’re reincarnated over and over again and Yoongi meets a different version of Hoseok every time but Yoongi is the only one that remembers.)

selene, interrupted at his music by jellyprince (tricycleamoving) (1,516)

“I want to look for my mother.” Yoongi blurts out. The weight of his choker suddenly feels more obvious, the crescent moon pendant heavy at the hollow of his throat.

In which Yoongi is a son of Selene, and Hoseok is the son of Dionysus that keeps him grounded.

Bright Light by signifying_nothing (6,288)

in which yoongi’s ridiculousness is hilarious, until it isn’t anymore.

Bitter & Sweet by soranosuzu (10,021)

Yoongi has been going to the same coffee shop every day for over a year now. He enjoys everything about his morning routine until Hoseok shows up and turns everything upside down. (In which Hoseok is a barista and Yoongi is a salty little shit)

color ring by jisoos (1,178)

hoseok swears he’s going to strangle his soulmate the second he meets him because are you serious? mint green? who the hell dyes their hair mint green? au where your hair changes color whenever your soulmate changes theirs.

And all this devotion (I never knew at all) by inkingbrushes (8,574)

Maybe Yoongi is actually really kind of fucking gone for his best friend.

(Also: Hoseok can’t sit on a secret for very long because he’s terrible at keeping secrets, which is only ironic because he loves Yoongi, too, and Yoongi hasn’t figured it out yet.)

Assembly Required by idyllicblue (6,851)

Hoseok finally moves out to live on his own but is all thumbs when it comes to putting furniture together. Thank god for a certain mint haired Ikea employee.

a question of luck by bazooklets (bazooka) (4,654)

It all started, Hoseok was pretty sure, when he was in his last year of college - and his body had gone on strike after way too many years of abusing it through cram school and tests and all nighters to finish papers at the last minute. It all started when he’d had six hours of sleep over five days and fell into bed and stared at the ceiling. It all started, Hoseok was pretty damn sure, with The Guy.

In which Hoseok has insomnia, and Yoongi has a really really nice voice.
