Honestly, people who haven’t watched Daniel Radcliffe in anything other than the Harry Potter movies are doing themselves a disservice. It comes through in his acting that he is choosing movies he really wants to do and is giving it his all.
When I first saw the image of the gem, I saw it paired with captions expressing the impact it had on black folks so I immediately saw the connection they were making it to being an example of stereotypical racist imagery (e.g. black face, g*lliw*g, m*mmy etc.) - the description (“can’t read :(”) next to the original image shared certainly didn’t make it any better.
I haven’t been able to keep track of everything that’s been said, and I haven’t been able to finish this video by two black SU fans (SwaggyThunder and SliceOfOtaku) who I watch on occasion, but the first post I saw about it was enough to make me listen (and learn from it).
Honestly, I’m bewildered by how many people are trying to defend and/or dismiss the drawing - or rather, why’d you want to defend it. (mind you… internalised racism and the constant learnt dismissal of it is probably ‘how’ and ‘why’)
In my opinion, and this doesn’t just apply to this issue that’s risen, it doesn’t matter what the intention behind it was, the impact is enough and even if I’m, a white person, am not personally impacted by it, that doesn’t mean others aren’t. It’s our place, as white people/people who aren’t black, to listen to those deeply negatively impacted and to empathise/listen!
I would say ‘spread the word’ as well, but I feel that would be hypocritical of me as regrettably I didn’t share posts discussing the issue (I am very sorry for that) but fortunately, the crewniverse (specifically Lamar Abrams) and Rebecca Sugar have recently spoken up, apologised on their twitter/tumblr profiles and taken immediate action (after their apology was made) in making sure the drawing is removed from future printings of the Arts & origin book it was featured in - people’s genuine concerns were listened to, and I’ve seen folks like SliceOfOtaku expressed he was glad for a compassionate response and I am also glad the crewniverse did so and changes are happening because of it!
I know the SU Critical side of the fandom has gotten to the nerves of a lot of people (I must admit I can be agitated by it too) but when it comes to racism or anything discriminatory/prejudice like that, it’s important to listen, to empathise, to have compassion, to try and make a change for the better - in order to benefit everybody.
It will continue to confuse me how, a show that reinforces all those lessons, can have such a toxic fandom that continues to go against those lessons (and even intersectionality).
Even if I disagree with some points made by SU critical on other matters, I still believe it’s okay to call out/criticise the shows/films/people/etc. you like. It can result in better things, again, that can benefit everybody.
I think that’s all I’ve got to say on the matter. I probably won’t discuss this further as I don’t want my voice to be heard over those who are directly impacted by such issues.
if i said anything insensitive or rude please let me know/correct me ahh
Yo, I'm black. I HAVE used the n-word, as have my friends, but we don't normally. It's just not how we relate to each other on the daily. It's almost like (overwhelmingly white) writers for TV, movies, etc. have decided they need a quick shorthand for establishing a character, so they have them drop n-bombs every 30 seconds, so we are at home then say, "Gee, that fellow must REALLY be black!"
How about some romantic Grell, Soma, and Agni headcanons please ? - Asked by anonymous
She does a fair bit of traveling with her job. Though she doesn’t go insanely far, she ventures to new cities at least, and she has made it a habit to get her lover a little souvenir at each stop. She’ll be in the middle of a dramatic chase and be completely distracted when she remembers she hasn’t bought them the traditional key chain or card yet.
She had a phase when she was really, really into sewing and knitting. She would buy new fabrics with cute designs and make her partner bags, clothes, gloves, scarves, and anything else she thought they would appreciate. She got over it after a while, but she also acquired some skill from all the practice and will occasionally make more things for her partner if she’s in the right mood. Her favorite creations tend to have flower print.
He loves finishing boring, tiring activities so he is free to look for his partner, walk into their arms without saying a single word and just cuddle with them for the next long while. He falls asleep almost instantly after they wrap him in a hug, trapping them under him for what will probably be a few hours
He openly admits to loving it when his partner gushes over him, so he often tries impress. He’ll wear his outfits that they complimented before and try way too hard to get their attention. He’ll ask them goofy questions, offer to help with everything, and when he gets desperate enough, he’ll even resort to the ‘dropping something in front of them and bending over seductively’ technique. However, he always drops things too close to them without making them aware of his presence, so when they turn around, they trip over him, and the two stumble to the floor. These failures cause Soma to pout and mope for a while, but his persistence most definitely gets noticed, and he receives the kisses he yearned for, so all is right in the end.
He always looks for ways to get closer to his partner, and one of his favorite ways is with a ‘hobby exchange’. Once a week he will participate in an activity that his lover really enjoys, and the next week the two do what Agni finds fun, which usually consists of him trying to teach them how to make a unique dish.
He has a fascination with clouds and the colors that paint the sky, especially around the afternoon. When he has extra time he asks his sweetheart if they want to accompany him to admire them for a little while before they return home to sleep. They usually stare in silence, Agni caressing their arms and nuzzling into the nape of their neck, slowly growing more tired and overwhelmed with the world’s beauty as time passes.
