anyway i don’t know what y’all’s motivations in voting in these things are but if it’s just your love for malec then i don’t really think that’s enough tbh so i propose what seems to me to be the best fuel and driving force and that’s anger. pls get angry that magnus being a bisexual asian man is a too unique and too important character to be overlooked like this (again), or get angry that poc in shadowhunters fandom have to watch malec, an interracial couple, losing to a white ship for the second year in a row, or be angry because ev//ak, as wonderful as they are, being a new white couple, never should have become so much more popular then the already well-known and interracial malec in such a short time, because none of this is a coincidence and it’s not fair and we shouldn’t just be satisfied with whatever ship wining just because they are both m/m and we still have hours before the poll closes and we can win this so pls
Maybe at once upon a time this was about whether he was innocent, or y’know, some sort of psycho murderer. But that ship sailed a long time ago, along with your career at Nelson and Murdock. So why do you still care?
Aside from Sara, who in the dctv universe do you think len would be attracted to/consider pursuing something with?
That’s really hard to say?
And attraction is very different from genuinely considering pursuing something. Who he’s attracted to could be any number of characters and we’d never really know, because most people don’t act on every (or even most) passing attraction(s)?
So I’m approaching this from the angle of “who would he genuinely consider pursuing or try to pursue” and my answer is coming up pretty short (sticking to canon, that is, because I can ship a lot in fandom).
Because with Sara, a few preconditions (after basic attraction) were also met? She’s single, she’s a badass who can hold her own in a fight, she’s more morally grey than most of the heroes he’s met so far, and she has her own checkered past and demons that she wrestles with. They’re working together closely and he knows he can trust her to have his back and that she has a huge loyalty to all of the team. She demonstrates (in S1) great emotional insight into others and cuts right through (his) bullshit but she’s typically non-judgemental about it. She doesn’t try to change him but she does expect him to be authentic and a better version of himself.
Aside from shipping coldwave (which I think is super canon-plausible), I can’t really see him pursuing anyone else on the Legends voyage. Jax is too young and too much like a younger brother (or son, given their ages…), Stein is married and their personalities would clash, Len and Rip are too at odds and Len doesn’t trust him, same with Ray tbh?, and Kendra seems pretty uninterested in Len and Mick and sees them as the dangerous criminals on the team. I think Len would find her too sweet for him? And he’d fine Nate too frustrating/annoying.
Of all the Legends, I can see him maybe having a thing for Amaya, to be honest, once he got to know her. Once she showed her (moral) flexibility a bit and they found a way to joke with each other. But I think he’d find her a bit strict? And maybe not easy to connect with or open up to.
For Arrow…it would be hard to me to see him with any of the Arrow ladies. Thea is too young and he would not at all be her type. Felicity is too… earnest? And would need more from him emotionally than he’s ready to give. Laurel comes the closest, but her moral compass and her being a DA make me think they might not actually get along much.
For the men… haha, I can’t decide if it would work perfect or be a complete and utter trainwreck to have him and Oliver together. I feel like they are too similar in certain regards, which would leave them often at odds and in competition. And by another token, Oliver has done a lot of killing (low-level) criminals and I think Len would see him as a deadly agent of justice and it would take a while to get around that reputation. And Digg wouldn’t put up with Len’s shit in the slightest (plus Digg is [was?] with Lyla) so… idk.
Which leaves us with Flash characters. Caitlin is an immediate ‘no’ because she wouldn’t be attracted to a guy like him at all. She likes guys who work out and who compliment and spoil her a little, guys that make her feel safe and protected and talk softly to her and she wouldn’t be comfortable with Len and his coldness. (And yes I ship her and Mick…). Iris seems unlikely because she was pretty scathing of him, and she needs honesty in a relationship, like a lot (with Eddie and now with Barry) and I don’t see that as something Len could really provide her with, and he’d be exhausted even trying to. I can see her lecturing him a lot and him not having any of it.
I can see Len being compatible with either Barry or Cisco though, to be honest. Not that he’d ever genuinely pursue anything with either of them, based on canon. Barry is his enemy, but he’s got most of the same checklist as Sara does: badass, surprisingly morally grey and has plenty of personal demons, has worked with Len and can see through and cut through his bullshit but does so while having rapport instead of being preachy. With Cisco… Len’s straight up admitted he likes Cisco, and he loved the alias Cisco gave him. Cisco is badass, clever, gorgeous, and has his own moral greys that crop up sometimes. He’s also funny and I think Len would really enjoy having him around. I can’t say if it would ever end up in flirting and romance territory, but I can just see them hitting it off.
But yeah, sorry dude, if we’re sticking hard to canon, the answer is pretty much that he wouldn’t genuinely try to pursue any of them (except Mick, who is already his husband).
((ooc! ok but honestly thank u everyone who follows/reblogs posts/sends asks to this blog/interacts w the blog at all, it’s partly the reason i haven’t jumped ship yet lmao. also because this blog gives my (otherwise obnoxiously self-indulgent) hotgami drawings some purpose. so like.. real true shoutout to u guys for being cool and interested i am feeling the Love))
I probably seem a little hypocritical saying this, since when Maya said that Riley saw Lucas as a brother in Girl Meets Yearbook I was convinced she was an unreliable narrator and that this was not true at all, but now after Girl Meets Texas I’m starting to feel like that goes the other way. After all, in Yearbook Katy first said that you might learn something about the person you’re impersonating, but then later on, she said that you can’t impersonate the people you’re closest to, and that you might actually learn something about yourself. Now that it’s been clearly established that RIley does NOT see him as a brother… that leaves Maya.
It’s not just that convoluted comment being tipped on its head that makes me feel like Maya and Lucas do not have an actual romantic connection, though. There’s lots of other stuff that, for me, points to it. First of all, as soon as Riley started treating Lucas like a brother… she imitated Maya. She started calling him names, hitting him, generally imitating her best friend to try and force that “brother” dynamic she was so hellbent on maintaining with him.
(Side note: ever since Semi-Formal, I’ve been convinced Riley was going to use Maya’s brother theory as an excuse to put her romance with Lucas on hold. Talking to Jack, she seemed very concerned that he and Rachel lost touch and were no longer in each other’s lives. I didn’t think her romantic feelings for Lucas were gone, but it seemed obvious that she cared more about keeping him as her friend the way Eric has done with Rachel instead, which is why she seemed to pause and seem so thoughtful about their statements despite the fact that she still seemed interested in Lucas).
Back to Maya and Lucas, though. I really think Maya is just confused about her feelings. There is a common thread in the people that she really cares about, and that’s that they are “good”. Like Riley. She’s said she loves Riley, and she loves her family, because they’re good people. When she declared her feelings for Josh, she talked about what a good guy he was, and how he’s like Riley. And then, in Yearbook… “We’re so much alike.” This is what she said to Lucas when she was pretending to be Riley, citing that they are both similar, and in Texas she reiterated the notion that he’s a good guy when Topanga asked her about thinking she liked Lucas.
I think that Maya is someone who is not used to having people stick around in her life and care about her, yet no matter how much she has teased Lucas and given him a hard time, he’s stuck around. And she did say he was cute from the get go, which is why I think right now she’s confused about her feelings. She has this person who has become a constant in her life, who she’s finally let her guard down around, but I don’t think it’s romantic. I think that in Yearbook when she got confused and thought Riley and Lucas were brother and sister, since she’s been rejected in the past, she let herself think that all those people thinking she and Lucas made a good couple were right, and that she could let her “feelings” for Lucas be something more than platonic.
I think Maya has had affection for Lucas this whole time, or at least since they had to work together in Girl Meets Crazy Hat, but I don’t think they’ve always been romantic, and I really think she’s confused about them being romantic now? She just wants to be loved and have something consistent, and when she believed that she might lose him to the bull, she panicked. And she believed that Riley might not feel that way about him anymore, so she let herself get more attached to him than she had been previously.
But honestly, based on the things said in Texas part 3, I don’t think it’s going to last as a romantic thing. No one is taking Lucas’s feelings into account; in season 1, I was under the impression that Rucas might not last and that Riley liked him more than he liked her, right up until the First Date ep. But throughout season 2, it’s been Lucas who has seemed more sure of his feelings for her. Yes, he’s gotten closer to Maya platonically, but the writers even confirmed in their August Q&A that Lucas likes Riley and his feelings hadn’t changed up to that point.
On top of that, Zay said Maya seemed to like it better when she was yelling at Lucas all the time than when she was dating him. Farkle said he doesn’t know how Maya feels. Topanga asked “You THINK you like Lucas?” Riley mimicked Lucas and Maya’s dynamic to try and act like siblings with Lucas. Maya herself admitted that she didn’t like talking about serious things with him or hearing her stories, and that that’s what he needs Riley for. She claimed that her role in his life is to make fun of him and give him a hard time. That certainly seems less like a romance and more like a sibling relationship or at least just a very strong brotp.
I know people sense chemistry between Lucas and Maya, but chemistry doesn’t always have to be romantic. I think the comments in Yearbook where they talked about those 2 being like “fire” were mirroring what people have said about them on the internet and was showing fans that maybe that’s a popular idea, people having fire and chemistry, but that’s not what they’re going for. After all, Maya cut herself off during her speech as Riley and said “We don’t care what you say, we’re not crashing our ships.” That was one of many things in that episode that felt like they were quite meta and like the writers were addressing the audience and letting them know that they were going to continue with their story, their way, and not give into the pressure to make Lucas and Maya the endgame couple.
And lastly, this isn’t quite about how I don’t think Lucas and Maya work as a couple, but more about people saying that “Riley and Lucas aren’t the new Cory and Topanga” meaning that Riley and Lucas won’t end up together. I don’t think that’s concrete evidence that they can’t be together, especially when there’s no other Cory and Topanga in the middle school crowd; Michael Jacobs has said that the new Cory and Topanga are Auggie and Ava. There can’t be TWO new Cory and Topanga’s. Cory and Topanga also met as little kids and grew up from there; Riley didn’t even meet Lucas until middle school. They can have a different story and still have the end result of being together with their first love when the show ends; just because they’re not exact copies of the old character’s doesn’t mean that they can’t have the same ending. Also, old interviews called Lucas “Riley’s Topanga,” so while together they might not have a Cory and Topanga love story, Lucas could still fill that role in Riley’s live of being her true love. (Although who knows what will happen; Riley could end up with Zay or Farkle or Maya and I’d still be happy. Really the only two couple dynamics I don’t enjoy at all are Lucas/Maya and Riley/Charlie).
Also I’m rambling but LAST THING is that I really would like to know where Josh fits into all of this. No one thought to mention Josh in the Texas episodes at all; if I had been Riley, the second thing I would have said after “You like him?” would have been “What about Josh?” I’m looking forward to seeing him back in the New Year’s and Graduation episodes, because I’ve always been excited to see Maya play the long game with him and watch them get closer as friends only to ultimately end up together when she’s old enough. That’s the story I want to see; Maya and Josh, Riley and Lucas. Not Lucas and Maya, I just found their campfire scene so awkward and forced. I thought maybe once I saw them try to be a couple I’d like them more, but they’re “a couple” now and I like them even less, if that’s possible.
TLDR; Why bother with the brother comment if no one sees Lucas as a brother? After Texas I think Maya sees him that way and just isn’t used to caring about people so is confusing it with romantic feelings. I still believe in Rucas. Also I WANT TO SEE JOSH AGAIN.
