i'm afraid i honestly don't know

Hey marcia:) sorry to bother but I needed to ask...How do you establish commission prices?Lately I've been thinking of opening them myself but I don't really know how much it is okay to charge? I know it's supposed to be according to the amount of time taken per drawing, among other things. I'm not sure anyone would be interested, so I'm afraid it won't work, but at the same time I feel like I should just go for it(?)Like, I dont have the courage to start.. Thanks for reading this♡have a nice day

Hi! I’ll be happy to help :)

Honestly, this topic is one of the hardest and the most subjective things in the semi-private sector of art industry. Basically, you’re forced to ask yourself “how much is my work actually worth in the terms of money?” and this can be tricky. Obviously, no one wants to underprice their art and bring themselves down but overpricing will discourage the potential clients - achieving equilibrium is necessary. And difficult.

Here are some things to consider:

  • How long have you been drawing?
If you’re rather an inexperienced artist/commisionee, you shouldn’t go for relatively high prices. One of the functions of price is informing the client of the quality of the service they can expect from you and the brand value. A new shop selling shoes cannot charge as much as Nike, you get the idea.

  • What is the service you can provide?
In other words, what can you really draw? People will come to you demanding different things: their  OCs, favourite ships, fursonas etc. and you gotta know what you are able to draw. If someone wanted a dragon in a forest, you can’t just not announce that “you don’t know how to draw trees in perspective” by the end of the commission process! This goes back to experience - the less confident you are about your skills the less you should charge.

  • How long does it take you to make one piece?
Usually, the longer you draw the more you can charge for a picture, but! Remember that time taking accidents such as “I cant get this hand right, I drew it 5 times and it still does not look ok” don’t count! That would be the effect of your lack of experience rather than you making the piece more detailed. We’re talking about a theoretically smooth process here.

  • How much time are you willing to spend on a particular commission?
This is a little bit different from the previous point. The questions asks: how much time are you willing to spend to satisfy your client fully? Are you willing to make several value sketches? Colour compositions? How many times will you go back and redraw something because the client informed you they didn’t like it?
The more you’re ready to do for your client the more you can charge. However, remember!! Each sketch/idea has to be of the same quality!! You can’t suddenly stop caring halfway through or decide that “this composition sucks, the client won’t choose it anyway, so I can half-ass it”
You don’t get to decide that, the client does.

  • How much would you spend on your own art?
Be honest and do not be greedy. You’re only starting and since art is surely your hobby, low prices will not hurt at the time being. First, you have to dip your toe in the water and decide if it’s okay, then make changes and eventually rise prices.

  • Check prices of other artists!
You gotta know what your competition is serving :) This should be your starting point, but!! Take as a reference several people with relatively similar art styles/experience to yours, and again, be honest with yourself. Adjust these prices to the criteria I mentioned above.

Additional commission related tips:

  • be as informative and neutral as you can be during the commission process; you can throw in suggestions but never any uncomfortable opinions
  • remember that it is you who has to put effort into pleasing the client,
  • it is not the client’s obligation to jump around you,
  • you can refuse to draw something, moreover, you can refuse the whole service if the client is eg. acting shady,
  • in your commission info state your contact, price info, way of paying and when it happens (before/middle/after work), how the commissioning process looks, how much time it takes, your preferences/info about your abilities (not necessary) and what you expect from the client,
  • the more information you provide the more confident the client will feel, it rises the chances of them commissioning you
  • be professional, be serious; surprise surprise - it is your job! :)

I think that’s all, hope I covered the topic fully and it helped! Now go rock the art industry <3

I'm really getting sick of animentality's anti ereri posts. They're the reason I'm afraid of looking up the tag for my favorite ship. Yes, eremin has undoubtedly more canon evidence than ereri, and I understand the frustration of having a ship that's obviously more meaningful than the more popular one, but to cross tag and rub it in the faces of shippers who don't outright lash at other ships involving Levi and Eren....? I honestly feel like shit rn.

I’m sorry, Anon. I know it’s hard to keep from lashing right back at them for hating on a ship that’s not particularly hurting them, but the only thing we can do is stay silent. It makes me sad and frustrated when even Ereri/Riren shippers do the same to others by saying things like, “Ereri is more canon than yours” or “The only ship that’s canon is Ereri” and I want to tell them, no I’m sorry, it’s not. Every ship in Attack on Titan has a possibility, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be canon. Everyone has the right to ship whoever they want because they can. And as much as I hate to say it, everyone is entitled to their own opinion as well. If people could understand that you don’t have to send hate and force your opinion on someone else, maybe everyone in the snk fandom would get along, but that’s just wishful thinking. We just have to suck it up and be responsible adults. Getting angry at others would only make things worse for the Ereri and Riren fanbase.

Don’t worry, I know exactly how you feel, Anon. There were times when I just wanted to blow up and tell them that if Eren and Levi were to ever get together, that they would not be an abusive relationship, but rather a relationship dependent on constant physical contact. Contrary to popular belief, Levi and Eren would be perfectly compatible with one another. They have been through the same exact past and present. The only thing that separates them is that Eren has experienced all this at such a young age and Levi sees that. He understands. If anything, Levi is like a father/mentor of sorts to Eren. We all know it won’t be canon, but is that going to stop us from reading between the lines and wanting to warp reality into a fantasy? No.

Just stay strong, Anon. It’ll only get harder from here. Especially once the second season comes out and the Ereri/Riren haters make a comeback after being in subtle hiding for so long. I mean, we’re already witnessing it unfold. Like you said, people are sending more hate into the tags than they have been in quite a while and it’s making each and every one of us feel like shit. It’s unfair. Their ship has the same possibility of becoming a reality just like ours (except Ymir and Christa,  they’re canon) and that hurts. To know that your ship will most likely never happen, hurts, it hurts a lot. But we’re lucky enough to change that perception. We’re fortunate enough to piece and ship characters together in loving relationships, and that’s a very beautiful thing to have. And because of that, what is even remotely beautiful or innocent to one person or a group of people, is instantly ugly and disgusting to someone else. And that’s the harsh truth. The only problem is, is that no one wants to accept what has clearly been put into their hands.

There will always be people who won’t respect a person’s ship because something about it either offends or terrifies them in someway to the point that they want to tell the world about it. And I can understand that, but telling others to kill themselves and to feel like shit for shipping two characters together? That needs to fucking stop. Now, I know there are other haters who are decent enough to keep quiet about their opinion for private conversations, and that’s awesome. Keep it up. Go rant to a friend or family member about it, just don’t threaten or attack someone individually or as a whole simply because you want to rub your “canon” ship in someone else’s face because it makes your ship feel “superior” over another. What really frustrates me and gets me going is why do people keep sending so much hate to others if they, themselves, don’t particularly like getting hate either? I don’t know. It frustrates me.

Anyways, as someone who ships literally anything and everything, there are some ships that I don’t particularly like in the snk fandom, but that doesn’t mean that I like to shove my opinion down their throats. To be honest, even if I don’t like it, I still low-key ship them because I can understand why others do. I just won’t go read and write fanfictions about them. But once I see fanart or cosplay, I’m like “I don’t ship it, but that’s some awesome fanart/cosplay”.

I’m sorry for going on a rant :’) I always get carried away with this kind of stuff, but just know that I’m here if you ever wanna talk about it, okay?

I hope you have an amazing day, Anon 😊

Hi, I've been diagnosed for a couple years now, and my teachers/counselors/parents all can understand the innatentiveness, and the forgetfulness, but they don't seem to understand that it's hard for me to complete assignments because it takes a LOT of emotional effort to get myself to even start doing the assignment. I've tried explaining the feeling to my mom, but she thought I was using my diagnosis to be lazy, and honestly, sometimes I'm afraid that she's right.

Initiation is an executive function. It’s a common problem for us—one that I struggle with! You might find some assistance in this tag.

Please know that you are not being lazy. When you want to do something and cannot make it happen, that is not lazy. It takes a lot of effort to do things that non-ADHDers find simple. Your mom and your teachers might learn a lot from watching Russell Barkley’s lecture about how ADHD is a disorder of intention, meaning that we mean to do things and want to do things, but we just never get to them somehow. It’s on YouTube. Barkley is an ADHD expert who actually understands what we’re dealing with and doesn’t sugarcoat things.

So I've been wanting to set up a study blog but I'm kind of afraid to because my handwriting is really big and horrible, and I'm horrible at organizing. I just don't know, every studyblr (that's what it's called right?) is super duper organized and has the neatest handwriting like yours and ???

Nah honestly don’t even worry about that aspect of it because sure the majority of the output you see from the studyblr community is this #aesthetic shit that I myself am guilty of trying way too hard to achieve when it’s really not necessary and detracts from the actual purpose of the studyblr community: to encourage productivity and self improvement and helping others. Behind every single “perfect” studyblr photo is 30 minutes spent writing a fucking title the right way, aching hands and wrists from writing unnaturally tidily, 637 deleted photos that were taken prior to you nailing that perfect shot, time spent manipulating the lighting so it’s just right and then manipulating the image further with exposure and filter settings to make it look even more perfect. Like honestly that shit might get you notes but that’s not what studyblr is about in my opinion. You don’t have to play into that aspect of the studyblr community in order to reap rewards from it. You can learn so much here without needing to pander to that kind of thing. I say go for it and don’t get disheartened when people have better handwriting/tidier notes than you/ more organised desks than you because that says nothing about them as a person or their intelligence.

I understand it. Don't be afraid, I support you." I cried. He's 11. (Tbh, I didn't know he knew what a bi person was)

I really love your analyses of Harry's vocal health. I too worry about him.. I'm afraid he'll go the Steven Tyler route and sound totally different if he doesn't take care of his voice. Like, rasp is cool, but nodes and limited range are not! Do you wonder if he does it intentionally? I don't know enough to know if it's possible to have a "controlled scream" or not. Also, just basing this on the other guys' vocal styles, what genre do you think is best suited for the rest of Ot4? Thanks!!

yeahhh exactly. And I mean, look, he’s going the rock and roll route so rasp is TOTALLY fine.  And honestly he probably WILL have to have surgery somewhere down the line just because that’s how it is.  When you’re using your voice that much in that way even if it IS in a healthier manner, there’s just a lot of wear and tear.  I mentioned in another ask the other day about how it’s similar to professional athletes and their knees…eventually it give them problems, but is it worth it to them to go as hard as they can while they can?  Absolutely.  Buuuut you wanna try and do all you can to try to wait until you’re older to have to do that.

As for Controlled Scream……ehhhh there are different schools of thought about this.  Technically not really?  but there are ways to do it that are easier on your voice than others.  and again, it just boils down to making a decision- is it worth it for you as an artist knowing what it may cause.

As for the other guys- honestly, I think they’re all totally smart and going the correct route for them.  Louis’ voice adds such a cool texture to edm, Niall has the perfect confessional singer/songwriter sound, and Liam has that smooth af sound that would be great for R&B.  :)

i’ve said this once, but i’ll say it again

@orphanblack and OBwriters, for season 5, please don’t let romantic cosima/delphine overtake platonic sarah/cosima. or platonic sarah/alison. or platonic cosima/alison. or platonic sarah/helena. please don’t let these beautiful sisterly relationships you’ve built over the past 5 seasons be overtaken by a romance. because orphan black has given viewers something that is really rare in the portrayal of these relationships between the clones and i would be so hurt to see that go to waste, for the sake of a romance. cophine is beautiful in its own right, but healthy familial bonds, chosen familial bonds i should add, is something i have really rarely seen on TV. and they’ve been built so beautifully over the past 4 seasons. don’t forget about them at the end of the series.

ok i am trash but i need a skulduggery pleasant cop!au like i need air so....
  • Valkyrie is the new hotshot rookie straight out of school and she comes into the precinct and is assigned as detective pleasant’s new partner. neither of them are amused.
  • (mostly it’s just Skul being like “guys. guys seriously. this is a joke right? she is a child. she’s like. 12 years old. what the fuCk” and Val being like “u wot m8?”)
  • they’ve been literally kicked out of the station for their pointless bickering/battles of wit on multiple occasions and are notorious Starters-Of-Shit
  • Skul is like. really. really super attached to his cruiser. Val doesn’t get it (“skul it’s identical to all the others” “i don’t expect you to understand”)
  • Ghastly is chief officer, who totally has a big disgusting crush on Chief Officer Tanith Low from the next precinct over. he’s always making excuses to send her files or try and combine forces or whatever the hell. he thinks he’s being subtle. he is not.
  • he is also certifiably able to Fuck Your Shit Up and there are tons of rumors circling about how he got his scars. skulduggery is 1000% not improving the situation
  • Skul and Val have a penchant for finding the Weirdest Cases Ever and when they bring them to Ghastly he just like, looks at the file in complete defeat. (“how hard is it for you guys to bring me a fucking normal homicide. one. just one time. that’s all i want.”)
  • Scapegrace and Thrasher are the janitors, Nye and Clarabelle work at the morgue, and China is a code breaking consultant
  • Skul and the rest of the Dead Men are famous and/or infamous for their time in school and some of them work at the precinct with Skul and Val. The rest are scattered throughout the city or have gone on to other careers.
  • Ravel actually used to be chief officer until he defected to a different borough. Skulduggery refers to him and the other officers there as “a bunch of spider fuckers” and Val doesn’t know why and is honestly afraid to ask at this point
  • Saracen and Dexter are partners but also partners u feel?

mostly i just need rambunctious cop shenanigans and car chases and late nights at the precinct and all of them just being utter goons together please pleASE

Honestly I was hoping that Leia was going get her inner Jedi out in this trilogy especially to confront her own son. Now with Carrie passing, I'm afraid that's not possible or that they're not willing to let it be possible through cgi, I don't know, I just hoped for so much more for Leia than whatever they might have now in store for her. The love of her life is dead, her brother is sulking somewhere, her son is evil, it would have been perfect to see her fight FOR everyone.

LISTEN Jedi Leia is what dreams are made of, okay. Jedi Leia would fucking terrify any opponent way more than any Jedi before her

Post your iplier.  Don’t let anyone who says otherwise stop you.  The only requirement is to keep it PG-13 for the things that you post in Mark’s tag.  Other than that it’s total freedom.  It might be a little hard to get the feedback or interaction you want at first, but keep doing it provided it’s what you enjoy doing.  And in regards to people liking him or not, I’ll have you know that no iplier is stupid.  Ever.  Every one of them is unique in their own way.  Even if for some reason or another you can’t see him as an iplier character, he is still your oc.  You’ve put time and effort into creating him.    Don’t be afraid to ask the other muns for interactions with your iplier too.  Most of us are pretty chill with this as far as I can tell XD

So go for it.  And most importantly, have fun.

Hey I'm really sorry, but I honestly don't know anything about what's going on with the Charlie Hebdo thing. I keep seeing the name and people talking about all these complexities of it, but I'm still not entirely sure what it is? Could you maybe give me a quick explanation/send me a link to something that explains it in a non biased way? I'm afraid if I just start googling with no previous knowledge I'll end up with a really bad, one-sided portrayal of it.

Of course, no problem whatsoever!

Charlie Hebdo is a French satirical left-wing magazine that’s been around for some fifty years by now and which relied on heavy-handed satire to drive points across. Meaning that they usually target right-wing idiots, religious extremists and political institutions belonging to every kind. They had come under attack a while ago because they had published some comics making fun of Muslim religious extremists that depicted Mohammed, which said Muslim religious extremists didn’t like because Islam forbids depicting the prophet and so they were committing blasphemy and *disrespecting their religion*, when in truth they were just disrespecting fanatics. What happened on Wednesday is that three terrorists got into the magazine’s building and killed twelve people, among which the director, most of the cartoonists, an editor, a psychologist who collaborated with the magazine, an economist who was there because he financed it and they were having the weekly reunion, the porter, a handyman who was just fixing stuff in the hallway and the two policemen who were there to protect the building as the cartoonists were under threat as they had been targeted long before now. Then two of the terrorists ran out and yesterday there was the fallout - they holed up in a press outside Paris and then were killed after one day in there. A third one (which I think was the third shooter in the massacre?) had killed a policewoman along with his girlfriend on Jan. 8th, then on the 9th he took seventeen hostages in a Jewish supermarket and killed four of them, then there was a blitz and they saved the others and he died as well. The girlfriend is still on the run last I heard of. And now Al Quaeda is saying it was them and they did it because they dared disrespect Islam and all their usual drivel.

The controversy - which shouldn’t even exist, but never mind - is that some people went and looked up the comics/covers of the newspaper and decided that they were racist/offensive/hate speech and so started saying that the attack wasn’t so bad since the cartoonists basically called it upon themselves, that after all if you always target minorities you should expect them to snap back (!) and they proceeded on saying that it was a trash racist islamphobic magazine and to basically imply that the terrorists had a justification to go in there and kill twelve people just because they didn’t agree with them. And then they go like ‘freedom of speech shouldn’t cover hate speech’.

The thing is that they had a very heavy-handed humor that isn’t to every taste, but these people got the interpretation wrong because a) if you don’t know the context aka local French politics you can’t grasp what’s behind the comics, b) those people were left-wing atheists, and they poked fun at actual racists/bigots/extremists, so if you say that they were being racist you’re basically accusing them of being the exact kind of person they loathed, and considering that there haven’t even been funerals it’s incredibly disrespectful as far as I’m concerned - like, sixteen people died for this and half of them didn’t even work for the newspaper in the first place and that’s what people think about? Never mind that people have kept on speaking over actual French people trying to teach them why the magazine was actually hate speech according to them, which was veeeery much uncalled for as far as I’m concerned. That said, I’m going to give some links as well, all posts written by French people explaining the situation.

This gives context on some of the comics that were used as an example of 'that newspaper promoted hate speech’.

This gives some more context about some of the comics above plus a run-down of the facts.

More context and explanation of the French cultural context

More history of the actual magazine and of its role in the French society, since it is actually quite an institution

More explanation about the magazine

Some more explanation with different kinds of vignettes and links to other sites

This gives legal context about how free speech is regulated in France vs hate speech (because they punish actual hate speech)

About how those cartoons are generally perceived in France and still more context about the magazine’s content

This explains the basic issue with people trying to silence them for having stated their opinion and getting this reaction

Recap post that sums up the situation on the 7th plus gives context

These are all posts by French people who actually read the magazine and knew it so I’d trust them over anyone who’s not French and thinks that the content is offensive regardless according to their standards and not to French standards, which is what is at matter here. All of these should also provide a fairly good explanation of the cultural context and why in France that kind of humor was seen as heavy-handed satire but it wouldn’t qualify as hate speech, also because as stated they targeted everyone from the France president (whoever it was) to the Pope to right wingers to Gerard Depardieu whoever have you. If you want more info after reading this I’m glad to provide. But mostly beware of most posts made by non-French people around who keep on saying that it was some piece of trash magazine that doesn’t deserve support - especially there’s one where they blatantly omit info while commenting the covers which is really completely ridiculous.

Never mind that there’s the problem at hand of terrorists killing a bunch of people in the middle of Paris in 2015. Even if it had been a right wing newspaper or what have you it’s pretty damn fucking worrying, since it means they could do pretty much anything at this point.

Scout! Your work is so lovely I just want to stare at it all day and wink at it all day. I was wondering if you had any advice about being afraid of making ugly art? Sometimes I'm afraid to try new things (like anatomy) because I don't know what I'm doing and I'm sure it'll look like a pile of turds. I end up falling back on the same ol' same ol'. Do you have any advice to get over this?

hey, thank you so so much! it means a lot!

AND HONESTLY ugly art is a part of growing as an artist. i’ve been posting art online for 10+ years, and it’s shown my progression. here are some of the oldest examples of my own wretched pieces from 2007:

i considered these finished. FINISHED PIECES OF ART!! and they are. and i did not think i could get any better than this. but i thought it was fun. and that’s really the key. because now,

i consider these to be unfinished sketches. was i particularly proud of what i produced in 2007 at the time? not really–i knew i wasn’t where i wanted to be, but i remember being really proud of myself for doing what i considered to be “finishing two pieces to absolute completion”

as you learn and develop your own skill, your understanding of what you think is and isn’t ugly is going to grow with it. there are a lot of pieces you’re going to create that you will think are gorgeous, but they all have to start out somewhere!! (•̀o•́)ง

If he leaves you or keeps pushing you into having sex, then leave him because you deserve better than a guy who only cares about your body more than your personality and soul

hello. don’t ever be afraid to tell people that you’re scared, it’s the first step in addressing your problems. when i started hurting myself again i ended up calling my therapist crying because i was so scared of hitting that point again where i didn’t want to try anymore. even typing that sentence now makes my eyes well up because the fear comes from such a personal place when you realize the monster that you’re running away from lives inside you.

don’t be afraid to get help, though. and never tear yourself apart over a bad day. recovery isn’t a straight line. it goes up and down in such a messy and unpredictable way. sometimes you have breakthroughs, sometimes you take steps back. this is a step back, that’s all it is.

with THAT said you’re a very smart lil flower pedal for even recognizing this as a mistake and i’m very very very proud of you !
