I'm actually really concerned about Keith in s4? Like, he's reckless yeah but he's not /suicidal/ - the times where he rushes into danger he at least knows he has a fighting chance. But this.... this time he was absolutely certain he was going to die. (And he didn't even bother saying anything to the team sob, he was just going to go out silently) Ahh I need s5 I'm so concerned about my babies (I'll just watch the Voltron Show on repeat to feel better)
YEAH. this season took pragmatic!keith and ran it to its natural conclusion. he’s obviously extremely unhappy and it seems like a natural arc from where he was in s3. he’s not in a good spot, and he hasn’t been since shiro disappeared, but i think it does him a discredit to see his decisions only in that light.
the episode code of honor was about how keith’s code conflicts with the demands of being on team voltron. in this episode, he’s uncomfortable with the showboating and feels like the blade of marmora needs him more. he’s concerned with the greater good to an almost fatal degree. the team calls him “cold” for it in season 1. in season 2, when he thinks he might be what zarkon is tracking, he never brings it up. he just leaves.
and while this pragmatism is a great character trait and i love him for it, it’s a double edged sword, like most traits are. it doesn’t leave much room to be himself. pidge calls him the loner of the team at the start of s3, and it strikes as false in that moment. it’s not borne out by canon because we see that he has an incredibly close relationship to shiro. but…
