Ways to Cheer Yourself Up (When wanting to be alone) - 50 top things to do
  • 1. Go ON Tumblr, believe it or not, we don't care where you're from, what you do, how you're being you, as long as you are being you, you're pretty much welcomed on here. That's why i love it. Unless of course you are homophobic or judgemental or ignorant - then the people will speak for themselves, we look out for each other here.
  • 2. Read Books; escapism is a wonderful thing
  • 3. Listen to music; and no - not the sad, 'ALL BY MYSELF' type music, but the kickass songs like 'I will Survive' or 'Loser Like Me' just celebrate yourself for being awesome, because we know you are; even if others don't; especially then actually.
  • 4. Become your own superhero. Every single one of you have a talent or a dream. Follow up on that talent/dream. YOU ARE WORTH IT, and you can be whoever you want to be.
  • 5. DISNEY MOVIES. Unless you absolutely hate bursting out into song - better cut of highschool musical and glee while were at this, then Disney is the best pick me up ever.
  • 6. Watch your favourite TV shows. Remind yourself why life can be awesome. Watching your fav characters usually means you can relate to them.
  • 7. Go on walks - it's very pretty outside, and sometimes our heads can be overloaded with information or stress, I advise calming music and a nice walk outside in comfortable clothes.
  • 8. Have a diary. A friend of mine recently bought me one, and it's a godsend because all the anger, or emotions I feel, I try to put in the diary rather than putting it out on others. It also calms you down. I feel better when I write.
  • 9. Speaking of writing...if you enjoy it- WRITE. Writing is a wonderful way to escape. You can put all your emotions into your characters and they just come to life. I tend to do that when I'm stressed.
  • 10. If writing is not your thing then bake. I've actually ironically read in a fan fiction where a character would bake when stressed and try out new recipes, this character tried making butterbeer; maybe be adventurous; have a food blog or something to keep you occupied.
  • 11. Be With Your Pets - Pets are loyal creatures, and they love you, even when you're being a pain in the ass, and I hear they're very good listeners.
  • 12. Now I don't know about you, but I LOVE Musicals. If you are a musical fanatic like me and you're feeling a little down, my dears; listen to those awesome voices, because sometimes we just - need - a break (Also, if you haven't watched RENT, watch it - NODAYBUT TODAY...or Starkid...Starkid make the most funniest musical parodies, even if you don't like musicals I suggest it, and if you're not enjoying their YouTube Channel, then I'll eat my own hat).
  • 13. ASK ME ANYTHING. If you really want to talk to somebody but you don't want to talk to people you know and you just want to get things out, my ASK box is always open.
  • 14. Find a hobby. If you don't really want to talk to anybody, that's okay, sometimes we need to just have some 'me time'. In my me times, I usually deactivate from Facebook, and just focus on things that make me happy. Like; Puzzles, Sudoku, Games, writing, cooking, singing, whatever it is...travelling even. Enjoy yourself.
  • 15. Travel. Maybe being stuck in the same place is the problem, maybe you're head wants to be in a place where it can ACTUALLY THINK.
  • 16. Go Hiking. I suppose Hiking is similar to walking but if you're an outdoor person, this is a great way to clear your head and to feel fresh.
  • 17. Hit The Gym. Or even do your own exercises. I like to walk - do crunches, and I love Zumba. I love dancing. If you love being active, this is also another way to clear your mind from negative things.
  • 18. GO SEE A MOVIE!!! When was the last time you had fun? Even if it's just by yourself. You're allowed to treat yourself. Go, enjoy, be surrounded by people, even if they're strangers.
  • 19. If you like coffee, treat yourself for one at a local cafe. Who knows, you might meet your coffee soulmate in a cafe one day.
  • 20. STOP thinking Negative. Have a Pros/Cons List. Try not to outweight the Pros list with the Cons. Please?
  • You are good enough.
  • 21. Write down a bucket List, and start ticking them off. Having goals and dreams is healthy. If you have dreams, then you have a direction of where you're going.
  • 22. Get help. It's okay, if you're head is in a really bad place to reach out to people. It really is okay.
  • 23. Help others. If you're not sure what to do with yourself at all, be useful to other people less fortunate than you. Volunteer! Work with Charity, Feed the homeless, help the guide dogs association.
  • 24. Smile more. It looks good on you, believe me. Spend time with your guilty pleasures, my guilty pleasure is binge watching glee
  • 25. Please DO NOT go to a pub to drink to ease your mind, if you are going to do that, do it with a friend, or somebody close.
  • 26. Eat Chocolate. Okay yes while society says NO DON'T EAT THE FATTY FOOD. Hey; screw them. If you feel better eating a bit of junk go for it. There's nothing wrong with eating a whole pizza or tub of ben and jerry ice cream when feeling upset - just try not to make TOO much of a habit : p
  • 27. REBLOG YOUR FOLLOWERS POSTS, you might be surprised that you aren't the only one feeling the way you're feeling, you might be surprised by how much you're forgetting that hey - it's gonna be alright.
  • 28. Do something nice for your neighbour. Ah who knows, have you ever actually talked to them? Maybe they might be lonely too.
  • 29. Have a GAMES Night. A very good friend of mine loves Games. If You LOVE Games, then hell have a marathon of them. Play the sims, be in control.
  • 30. Speaking of marathons...dun dun dun - MOVIE MARATHON, I Don't Know About You Guys, But Having A Harry Potter Movie Marathon always cheers me Up. WITH FOOD Of course, and good company, but this is about cheering yourself up, so if you don't want company, that's okay.
  • 31. Draw. I love drawing too. I suppose I'm more of the creative person. There are a lot of different types of people out there, maybe you like solving things - do those fancy cube things Idk what they're called. If you are like my brother and you love Maths, then maybe you can tutor someone. On one hand you're helping someone, and doing something you like doing, just like I'm drawing because I like drawing.
  • 32.Be with kids. believe it or not, kids are the most innocent little munchkins, and they honestly don't care what you look like, if you play hide and seek with them they'll be thrilled, so long as you're nice to them, they're generally nice to you... but be warned, they tell it how it is too. I talk a bit different. The most popular thing they've said to me was "Is that why you talk funny, because of the things in your teeth?" (They've also never really seen braces before) I even had one kid determined to get me to sing 'Everything is awesome' I'll never forget that because this kid clearly didn't care how I sounded, and just wanted me to sing with her. I felt great.
  • 33. If you're into Fairy Tales, Please Please Read Chris Colfer's The Land Of Stories series 1-4. It's an amazing series, and you almost forget what world you're in once you start reading. Plus, there's more coming (I'm a little excited)
  • 34. Watch Pixar Movies. You can't go wrong.
  • 35. GO TO HOGWARTS. Harry Potter Fan? Visit - Platform 9 3/4s in London, or go to the Harry Potter World, or if you can't actually visit these sites, go on Pottermore.
  • 36. Read Fan Fiction, you might not be a harry potter fan, but whatever fandom you are in, believe me sometimes Fan Fictfion Cheer me up. I adore Glee *Don't Judge Me* and Dalton is the best thing ever. Or Little Numbers...or Both. They cheer me up big time.
  • 37. Role play. If you like superheroes or characters, go be with the crowd. I believe they have events like Comic Con, and on Facebook they even have Events for such things, go be with strangers! So long as it's safe of course.
  • 38. Write a letter to the person who inspires you most and send it. You might be surprised by an answer.
  • 39. Pick up your instrument. Don't ignore your musical talent if you do have a musical talent. Remember, you're worth it. I don't care what you've done. Pick, It Up.
  • 40. Maybe go visit your family? I know this is about 'quality me time' but if you haven't seen your family in such a long time or are at a distance. Maybe being surrounded by something familiar is what you need.
  • 41. Change Careers. If you're not enjoying what you're doing or studying, change it. I remember in highschool a teacher said you might change your job 10 - 12 times before getting it right. It'okay, you just haven't found where you're meant to be yet.
  • 42. Enter a competition - Who knows what will come from it, take risks.
  • 43. If you're a risk-taker, challenge yourself. IDK how you're going to do that, but google has some pretty good answers. Even ask your tumblr followers, they follow you for a reason after all.
  • 44. Go on a boat. Go Fishing! I don't know, it's not my thing, but if you like fishing, then hell - go out there and fish.
  • 45. Find time for yourself, are you working too much? Maybe you are working too much. You know life doesn't stop for nobody, and if you keep pushing yourself so hard, time will go so fast and you won't realise how much of that time you could have spent on your own self.
  • The world is not going to end if you treat yourself.
  • 46. You ARE Good Enough. Listen to my words. Sometimes encouragement is all we need, when people feel hopeless, or like everything's gone wrong. It's gonna be okay. I promise, just hang in there.
  • 47. Write Down Quotes that Inspire You. I have a wall of these, and of people that inspire me too, and it reminds me of the good things in life when I'm in a crappy mood.
  • 48. Find something to do. If you're not doing anything, go take up a course, research things that interest you, you might be surprised by what comes from it. Join a community that enjoys doing things you do.
  • 49. Go To The Beach - If you live in Australia like me, visiting the beach is actually really calming and me and my best friend always would go on a random drive, and drive up to a beach or a look out, and it was always calming. Enchanting too sometimes. Maybe we forget about the place we live in, and what's exciting about the place. If you're in New York, visit Broadway or The Statue Of Liberty, or if you're in London, go to the London Bridge, or the Eye, visit the Eiffel Tower if you're in Paris...just go Anywhere.
  • 50. Take a random journey. Go on a train to somewhere new, go on a road trip. You never know what's around the corner.

my moms trying to guilt trip me into living with her after graduation. I already made up my mind and I'm moving out. I'll probably stay with her for like a year so I can work and get money but that's it. she's thing to scare me into staying and it's working... how the fuck am I supposed to pay for insurance, food, medicine, house shit, an actual apartment? I can't do it

Hi darling, xx

I totally understand where you’re coming from. As someone who’s trying to move out, I feel your pain about feeling like parents are attempting to guilt trip you into staying at home.

Moving out is a scary thing to do, my brother was actually kicked out because of anger and other reasons. & from what I’ve gathered from him, he wishes he would have stayed at home and make the best of living at home. My brother is 21 and he has a job and he’s also going to school. He’s got his own apartment and such.

I personally struggle with the whole thought of moving out, I mean, I may not like living at home but I think about the following things and it makes me feel a tad bit better.

  • Your parents go grocery shopping
  • You have a washed & dryer that you can use for free (plus you’ll always have clean clothes.)
  • You’ll get to see your pets all time (if you’ve got pets that is.)
  • Benefits such as being on your parents healthcare and insurance
  • Rides to places if you don’t drive yet
  • Help with anything you’re going though
  • Your own room where you can do what you please
  • You wont have to pay for your own internet/cable or phone bills (well, at least I don’t)

Hun moving out is something that you need to be ready for and from your ask, it doesn’t seem like you’re reading yet and that’s totally okay. I can admit I’m not ready to move out, even though I would love to. I know that I’m not going to be able to take care of myself without my mom. As hard as it was to say that, its true.

Job Hunting

Once you’ve checked out those links, I have some general advice for you on how you can cope with how you’re feeling.

  • Talk to your parents. Let me know how you’re feeling & what’s going on.
  • Give them examples of how you’re feeling
  • SHOW your parents that you’re ready to move out by being more independent
  • Allow yourself to express how you’re feeling in a healthy manner
  • Ask your parents for more freedom around the house or even just small things such as saying you’ll do the dishes tonight because you love your parents.
  • Do some kind things for your friends and family, show them that you’re ready to be on your own :)
  • Keep an open mind about everything, being an adult isn’t the funnest things I’ve done.

the human-shaped emptiness inside

excerpt: they have the coming out conversation over skype, four months in. phil says, i just wanna show you off, and dan says, you can. they talk about work experience, after, and kind of forget.

note: my coming out headcanon - or, to be more accurate, the lack thereof -  put into 1.5k words. there are a hundred versions of their potential coming out and none of them fits inside my head. there is a reason for this.

also: please excuse the lowercase. i have a capitalized version sitting around waiting for someone to complain, but i have been informed this fits the style better. suspend belief. also read on ao3.

1. they have the coming out conversation over skype, four months in. phil says, i just wanna show you off, and dan says, you can. they talk about work experience, after, and kind of forget.

2. dan doesn’t tell his mum but does tell phil’s, standing barefoot in her kitchen making two cups of tea. she asks while rummaging through drawers and he tells her with shaking fingers against porcelain mugs, finds that it’s not that big of a deal. he doesn’t tell his own mum, but he thinks she already knows.

3. in the supermarket phil buys too much food for only one person and an elderly woman in aisle three asks. he says, my boyfriend’s visiting, and pretends it’s not for the first time.

I'm trying to get into digital painting and I was wondering if you have any tips on how you draw those amazing speed paintings? Any works I've tried end up totally screwed in proportions and it takes forever to do 😳 Thank you for your beautiful art it's a gift 💕😌

Good Morrow Nonny Bobs.

Thank you very much for the ask and your lovely words, I hope I can provide some kind of useful or actionable advice. I can only offer accounts from personal experience of what I found helpful.

If you’re struggling with proportions, that might not be something to take to task in a speed painting format. That might be something that you dedicate more time and labour to and learn the principles of thoroughly before trying to paint them quickly. Fundamentals are worth the investment.

The key to doing anything competently, at speed or otherwise, is repetition. The more you do something the more efficient you become.
I know I go on about Noah Bradley’s 21 days to become a better artist challenge a lot, but honestly, I think that’s when I really started to get a better handle on speed painting and effective, bolder mark making. The challenge is to spend one hour everyday practising. I spent most of my 21 days painting Master-studies.

Limiting yourself to a shorter time frame really forces your brain to make decisions at speed, analysing and prioritising the most important elements of a piece. The reason I suggest the masters is because they have actually done a lot of the hard work for you. They’ve already translated the image into brushstrokes. Painting is all about suggestion, if you’re going to learn representative mark making, you might as well learn from the best. Here is an example of a Sargent Master study I did from the challenge last year :

You can see that the only part of the image to have any real detailing is the focal point, in this case the face. The rest of the image is very crude, representational mark making done at speed. It creates the illusion of a far more complete image. Be objective and pick paintings that are going to teach you something. Look at your weaknesses and choose paintings that will help you solve the problems you are having in your own work.

Another thing to bear in mind is the actual function of speed painting itself. Why are you painting them at all? First and foremost, they’re about practice. They’re about learning. They’re not all going to look like you wanted them too, they’re not all going to be successes or masterpieces. They’re training exercises and that’s not always pretty, in fact sometimes, it’s downright ugly but that’s a huge part of the journey to improvement - failure.

Try not to put tonnes of pressure on yourself to perform. If an hour isn’t enough time for you yet, that’s absolutely fine. Find a period of time that does work for you. If you’re not learning because you’re clock watching, the exercise is redundant anyway.  It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing your progress or results to someone else’s but try and remember we all learn at different rates, we all have different time commitments and some people have just been on the road for a lot longer. In some cases, you’re seeing an image for the first time without the context of the 20+ years prior commitment. In almost all cases, you’re only seeing highlight reels from artists, people don’t tend to celebrate a perceived failure which is a shame really, we should, those pieces are just as important and integral to the process … but the ego quite simply does not allow it.

I hope that didn’t wander too far and that you got something useful from that answer XD.  I know I have the tendency to waffle a bit once I get going.

Thanks again for your ask and enjoy the journey - It’s the best bit anyway.

Wherein there is a lot of texting, some advice via Natasha and Darcy, a bit of pining, and a first date in an amusement park. Oh, and on top of being a disabled veteran, Bucky is a professional catwalker. Literally.

Schrödinger’s Romance by InTheMiddleOfNowhere

“It could be a relationship, it could not be. You can assume either until you see for sure the results.”
We all know those moments. Those moments when your family all gathers around you and asks “So, do you have a boyfriend yet?”. Bucky knows these moments all too well and, quite frankly, he’s sick to death of them. Unfortunately, being a 21 year old college student makes it harder for him to come up with excuses, and with Christmas coming up he needs to think of a way out fast. A chance encounter with a stranger through an old library textbook could just be the kind of miracle he needs to make it through the holidays with his last shreds of sanity intact.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered (WIP) NeverBeenSane

Steve Rogers was content with his life. He loved his shop, loved creating works of art for people to display on their bodies, had a tight knit group of friends who cared about him, and had finally paid off his student loans and the loan he’d taken out to start his business. But it still feels like there’s something, or someone, missing from his life.
Everything’s going to change when he decides to take Natasha’s advice and sign up for a military penpal program.

Thirty-Eight Days and Counting by thecommodore_squid

It didn’t escape him that Steve shared his assumed last name. “Are you gonna be my cousin?” Bucky asked dully.

Steve frowned. “Husband, actually,” he said easily, holding up his left hand to show a typical golden band.

Bucky scowled and closed the door.

An AU in which Bucky is put in the witness protection program and Steve is the agent hired to protect him/pretend to be his husband.

Two Supersoldiers and a Toddler (series) by biblionerd07

Steve and Bucky didn’t know HYDRA was working to breed a new supersoldier from their DNA, but they’re pretty glad they get to keep the little boy, even if things aren’t exactly smooth sailing all the time.

Undertones and Overtures by RockSaltAndRoll

In which Steve is deaf and Bucky is an amputee.
Bucky Barnes is studying for his masters in Music Composition at Juilliard when he unexpectedly meets skinny little artist Steve Rogers in a book store one Saturday. They both have their issues and it’s going to take a lot to understand each other, but with a little help from friends and family, they might be able to make this work.

Can I have a bit of a spoiler for the poly fic? *__________* PLEEEEEEEASE i'm leaving tonight so I need something to read on the plane ):

“I think it’s a great idea.”  Archie said, “Fuck working for someone else!”

“I don’t know if I can pull it off yet!”  Finn laughed, “It’s just in the planning stages.”  He lit up a cigarette, grinning genuinely for the first time in four months, “How’s Italy?”

“Well the dig is fucking amazing.  And Izzy is a force to be reckoned with!”  Archie laughed, “It’s real nice having her around a lot.”

“Missing Tom?”

“Well he’s here a lot o’ the time.  The boxing joint’s going so well and they’ve got a great manager in so Rhys and Tom have both got more free time now, so they’re thinking of opening up another one in London, I’ve been offered a job in London, and Chloe’s work takes her there so often it’s ridiculous to stay in Stamford anymore.”

“Oh my fucking god!  You’re coming to London?”  Finn looked at his computer screen in disbelieving joy.  The picture was slightly pixelated, but Skype was coping ok today.

“Probably!”  Archie declared, “And you’re in fucking America!”

“Only eight more months!”  Finn replied.

“And every time Phil gets another American role!”  Archie reminded him.

“Aye there’s that, but London’s our home so we’ll be there most o’ the time!”  Finn said excitedly and then quite suddenly his face dropped, “Oh but Chop.”

“Yeah.”  Archie said slowly.  “He broke up with Pam.”  Archie said, “He’s just real unhappy.  Danny says the business is doing great and that he could run it himself if Chop wanted to go to Italy…”

“He won’t go after her.”  Finn said.  “He knows how to take a no.”

“And Izzy keeps saying ‘no’ to him.”  Archie agreed, “But she hasn’t dated anyone since him.  Actually, she’s acting a bit like Phil did when Rae said no to him; having a bunch of lovers and not getting emotionally attached to any of ‘em.”

“Maybe she’s still in love with Chop.”  Finn knew what Archie was hinting at, “Maybe she’s just living the life she wants with no man tying her down.”

“Or woman.”  Archie said and Finn cocked an eyebrow.

“Aye I know; she pansexual right?”

“That’s it.”  Archie answered.  “I don’t even know if Chop’d know what to do with her if they got back together now anyway.”

“I’m sure he’d figure it out.”  Finn answered.  “But he won’t go after her.  It’ll only ever happen if she goes back to him.”

“I really don’t see it happening.”  Archie answered, “Even if they are still fucking every time they’re in the same country as each other.  Izzy’s enjoying her life far too much to ever go back to Stamford and I don’t see Chop ever leaving there.”

“I dunno.  People can change.”  Finn shrugged.

“Anyway, I’ve got some monumentally big news.”  Archie said.

“Bigger than coming to London?”

“Well yeah.”  Archie said.  “Much.”  He cleared his throat and Finn looked at him expectantly.

“Tom and I are-” The screen froze and Finn’s eyebrows furrowed.  He waited to see if Skype would fix itself, but the call dropped out and he rolled his eyes and tried calling Archie again.

“Hey.”  He said when they reconnected.  “I didn’t hear your big news, it cut out before-”

“We’re gonna be fathers.”  Archie cut in over Finn and Finn stopped dead, his mouth still open.

“Wha-”  He stopped himself from asking ‘what’ and suddenly chuckled, “um… congratulations?”

“I know, I know.  Tom hates kids and never wants them…”  Archie said and they both laughed.  “But Lindy got in a bit o’ trouble.”  Lindy was Archie’s youngest sister, she turned 21 this year.

“Yeah… and she doesn’t want to abort it so….”

“Wow.”  Finn marvelled as he realised what Archie was telling him.

“She was looking into putting the baby up for adoption and… I dunno.  I just… I offered to be the one to adopt it when it comes.”

“Did you ask Tom first?”

“No.”  Archie said with a tone that denoted that the conversation that he had had to have with Tom had not gone well.

“So is he seeing himself as a parent yet?”  Finn asked and Archie shook his head.

“No, he’s seeing himself as an unwilling participant in my fuckbaggery.”

“He’s obviously very impressed with your decision.”

“Very.”  Archie said.  “But he knows I won’t go back on the promise I made my own sister, so… he has very begrudgingly agreed to go along with it.  And our baby will come along in late May.”

“What about the father?”

“Shithead skipped out as soon as he found out.”

“Is Lind ok?”

“She will be.  She was a lot happier when I said I’d adopt it.”

“So when you get a place in London, you’ll be looking for one with a nursery?”  Finn asked, there was a small stab of desire in his heart and he realised he was envious.  Rae didn’t want children, but there was a part of him that would love to be a father.

“Yep.”  Archie said with a grin that he couldn’t keep off his face, “I know Tom’ll come around… I’m so fucking excited to be a dad!”
