A. Hamilton’s letters to John Laurens, an analysis:

Now, having researched the language of the late 17th century only a little bit, I don’t find myself an expert, though I do understand the inner workings of the human brain, and can make modern day comparisons to the things Hamilton refers to in his letters to C. John Laurens.

I’m going to start with the most noted one (dated April, 1779)

Cold in my professions, warm in [my] friendships, I wish, my Dear Laurens, it m[ight] be in my power, by action rather than words, [to] convince you that I love you. I shall only tell you that ‘till you bade us Adieu, I hardly knew the value you had taught my heart to set upon you. Indeed, my friend, it was not well done. You know the opinion I entertain of mankind, and how much it is my desire to preserve myself free from particular attachments, and to keep my happiness independent on the caprice of others. You sh[ould] not have taken advantage of my sensibility to ste[al] into my affections without my consent. But as you have done it and as we are generally indulgent to those we love, I shall not scruple to pardon the fraud you have committed, on condition that for my sake, if not for your own, you will always continue to merit the partiality, which you have so artfully instilled into [me].[2]

I’m going to break this apart, so you can read it if you want, or just go along with my analysis.

Firstly, Alex writes:

“Cold in my professions, warm in my friendships, I wish, my Dear Laurens, it might be in my power, by action rather than words, to convince you that I love you.”

Though the word “love” can be used lightly (Hamilton himself uses the term to mean “friendship” or “well wishes” in his letter dated June 30, 1780, when he says “The lads all sympathize with you and send you the assurances of their love.”) in this context, he is clearly not talking about friendship. A love that needs convincing to be proven? Not a friendly love. Hamilton, essentially, is saying: “I am professional at work, I love my friends, but you are the person I wish to set my love upon.” The love, romantic or sexual, was not merely friendly.

Moving on.

“I shall only tell you that ‘till you bade up Adieu, I hardly knew the value you had taught my heart to set upon.”

In simple terms: “I didn’t know what I had until I lost it.”

Hamilton misses Laurens. He didn’t know the value of Laurens’ love until he could no longer experience it for himself. I find this sentence linguistically beautiful, but let’s not get into that.

Indeed, my friend, it was not well done. You know the opinion I entertain of mankind, and how much it is my desire to preserve myself free from particular attachments, and to keep my happiness independent on the caprice of others.

Although I’ve seen some suggest that he is viewing all of mankind negatively, I disagree. He loves humanity (or otherwise holds a neutral stance), but he doesn’t want to become too attached to people for fear of losing them.

Psychologically, we could look into the death of his mother, and then of his cousin, the way his father had abandoned him, and the fact that he had never really had a relationship (that we know of) that wasn’t somewhat forced. He is choosing Laurens.

He wished to “keep [his] happiness independent on the caprice of others.” Meaning he doesn’t want to rely on others for happiness, probably because for his whole life he has had to struggle to be happy on his own.

You should not have taken advantage of my sensibility to steal into my affections without my consent. But as you have done it and as we are generally indulgent to those we love, I shall not scruple to pardon the fraud you have committed, on condition that for my sake, if not for your own, you will always continue to merit the partiality, which you have so artfully instilled into me.

“How the fuck did you get me to like you???? I don’t like anyone????? what the fuck???”

Hamilton did not want to feel romantically towards Laurens, but he does.

“We are generally indulgent to those we love….” This is not friendly love….Historians….He was….Bisexual….

“…If not for your own, you will always continue to merit the partiality, which you have to artfully installed into me.”

This quote basically translates to: “Please recognize that I love you, and that it is not fair if you don’t love me back.”

Lets say if people actually read this I’ll write one on the next few letters okay???

Update: Part 2, Part 3

Spell Jar For Courage

I came up with this spell jar because I had an offering and I wasn’t sure what to do with the leftovers but hey, they still have strong magick in them since they were an offering so might as well put it to good use!

You will need:
-dried orange rind- to represent the sun and lift your spirits
-ginger - for passion and added power to your spell
-dried dandelion - for wishes
-lemon thyme - for courage
-sage - for protection and luck
-allspice - for courage
-ground clove - for prosperity

Layer these ingredients in a jar.
Light a red candle and while the candle is burning imagine your intention of courage and strength.
Seal the jar with the red wax for courage.

*vague predictable Moana spoilers*

‘I Am Moana’ is the only Disney song I have ever cried to in a theater and the one that still either gives me chills or makes me swallow too hard when I listen to it still. There’s a few reasons why. One is the fact that older people with a lively spirit will always get to me (BIg Fish knows this and make me cry every single time at the end as well).

The second reason I think it’s because I just love that moment when Moana has found herself. It’s like a moment I wish I had you know? It’s so rare to find a female character sing a song about herself in that way. ‘Let It Go’ while overused everywhere, had a similar meaning, but it was more generalized. Mostly an overall f-u world type of song. Probably so that everyone had a reason to sing it, rather than just the character themselves.

I just love how the song is powerful and especifically speaking about all the things Moana has done. She knows her achievements and she is allowed to recognize them. I love that.

Amazing writer, I would like to humbly request hc dor Todoroki, Iida and Kirishima (seperately) with an s.o with a very strong quirk that can easily go out of control and they're terrified of hurting other people and desperately want to be a hero

Sure thing dear =) I very much hope I could do your request justice and that you’ll like it!

Todoroki:

- When his partner tells them about their fears and deepest wish, he offers them his help. Todoroki takes them to talk to his teachers and looks up if other heroes had trouble with their powers as well. He is sure there is a way and he’ll be at his partner’s side, while they look for someone who knows what to do or who is willing to train them so they can stay in control.

- He often doesn’t know what to say when his partner feels down or worries a lot, so he stays quiet and offers a hug or takes their hand to show them he’s there with them. It takes him a while to notice that his silent support most of the time is helping them a lot more than he ever thought.

- Todoroki does his best to take his partner out as well; to make sure his love gets a break if he thinks they trained for too long or if they’re stuck on a problem and just run in circles.

- If his partner wants company while they train, he’ll sit down with a book or settles down to talk while they lift weights or concentrate. And just the same, Todoroki helps them with their schoolwork if they have trouble with something.

Iida:

- Once his partner tells him what they want to be, he’ll be very fired up to help them find a way to accomplish their dreams. Iida makes sure to loudly proclaim that he believes in them and that they can do it.

- He tries his hardest to be supporting, especially whenever his partner hits a low and while he doesn’t always find the right words, he makes sure to reassure his partner that he’s going to help them where he can and that he won’t give up on them.

- Iida also talks to his teachers and family to see if they have any tips and he’s with his partner while they look for someone to teach and train them. No matter how long it takes or how difficult it may be, he’ll support them whenever they feel like giving up.

- Since Iida knows that it’s important to clear one’s head and get out as well, he invites his partner to family dinners and takes them to quick trips to the supermarket to get ice-cream or for a walk in the park.

Kirishima:

- When he finds out about his partner’s dreams and they tell him about their fears, he’ll take their hands and clearly and seriously tells them that whatever they decide to do, he’s going to support them either way.

- Once his partner decides they want to do everything they can to realize their dreams, he’ll do his best to help, he looks up websites with them, researches and asks his teachers and classmates if they have any ideas.

- On the days when his partner hits a wall in their training or feels like they’re going to fail or like they should give up, he hugs them tight or talks with them until they feel more secure again or until they collect their strength for another try.

- Kirishima plans a lot of dates as well. Some of those he connects with research or takes them to look around at professional hero offices, so his partner can inform themselves. Most dates however, are very normal. He takes them to the movies, to lunch or he plans activities they both enjoy.

Do you know any good femlock AUs? (Btw I've read everything by queerwatson and I've read How the Mouth Changes its Shape) There just isn't enough femlock 😭

well i can see you’ve had a brilliant start, here are some more that i hope you’ll enjoy <33

teenlock/ unilock:

i already made this list if you’d like to check it out

soulmate au:

Moonlines -  Ever since Sherlock had come back from the dead, things had felt different.

how thick about us root -  Though Sherlock had never been the sort to believe in a higher power, she constantly wished there was someone in particular she could blame for the four letter word she had ‘tattooed’ over her ribs.

coffee shop:

miss a train or a plane to meet you for coffee -  Jane meets Sherlock at a coffee shop. They fall in love. They bake, they kiss. Jane doesn’t miss any trains or planes, but she does nearly miss work.

witchlock/ potterlock:

Guide Me in the Moonlight (witchlock, sherlock is a demigirl <3) -  John had easily claimed her place in Sherlock’s home and heart and cast such a spell of affection that left the witch aching.

Honey And Amber (witchlock, wip) -  Sherlock runs a little magic shop, with her trusty friend Hamish, the Glaswegian skull, who talks and interferes, and is a constant matchmaker. Johanna it’s-a-mouthful-call-me-John Watson takes a wrong turning and discovers the shop, as well as a friend, and the love of her life. (sherlock deals with a lot of insecurity, but the fic is very soft and lovely!)

Jane Watson and the Room of Requirement (potterlock) -  Sherlock figures something out about a particular room on the seventh floor that only sometimes seems to exist. She shows it to Jane. Fortunately it’s a good place for figuring things out.

a little odor that to me is metre (potterlock) -  There are a lot of disturbing things Jane is almost used to coming home to. Sherlock leaning over a cauldron isn’t one of them.

translock: (well its not really an au but i will put it on any list)

Like A Pillow -  John doesn’t like the bit of softness on her stomach. Sherlock does.

Making the Cut -  Sherlock is genderfluid, but hasn’t told anybody yet, afraid that they wouldn’t be accepted. However, feelings of dysphoria make it harder and harder to hide.

Reborn -  There are two secrets Sherlock intends to take with her to the grave. They are, quite plainly, unutterable.

winglock:

Keeping You Safe -  After the end of her disastrous marriage, Joan moves back in with Sherlock and learns - quite by accident - what happened to Sherlock’s wings.

specific aus:

The Bee Charmer - au of fried green tomatoes, but less sad (contains mcd at the very end, read the tags please!)

lone and level sands stretch far away - the mummy au, and the crossover is written gorgeously to fit the characters. also, john is so fucking hot,, what else is new,

The girl who chose her dog over her fiance...

So this was a hot story yesterday in India. A young woman decided to end what would have been an arranged marriage because the guy asked her to get rid of her dog, Lucy.

But… He still tried to make her change her mind.

It was clearly hard for him to understand how a woman would chose a dog over him. I guess he felt a sense of entitlement since he believed as a human he had power over a dog as well as a way to manipulate his future wife. I mean look at that condescending article image he sent after saying “your life” and “you have the right to do whatever” and “your wish.”

Now if he was respectable about this, it was still okay. As a cat (3) and dog (1) owner, if I was asked to part with my pets for a future relationship, I would have never agreed. My animals are part of my life and are family. They have been with me for 10 years. S damn right, they are a fucking priority.

The woman in question dodged a bullet, but was subjected to hate (stupid trolls) because she was selfish (hahahaha, yeah right!) and didn’t think about her future (*rolls eyes*). Some men tried to bring in feminism, and claimed if the genders were reversed, people would still support the woman and call the man who wouldn’t give up his dog, an asshole, a jerk and a male chauvinist. Indian men really love to wage gender wars and talk about “what ifs.”

But at the end of the day, the girl is happy and so is her dog :-)

u ever think about the sheer potential of Kira’s storyline if they hadn’t written her out? she’s always had a storyline separate to Scott & the Gang, which is AMAZING, it’s so great that she wasn’t just the girlfriend. But to literally start her on this journey and then cut her out of the show because ‘her story is done’ is ridiculous. Can u believe the lazy, racist writing???? like there’s literally a WHOLE PLOT in this Skinwalker stuff, and yet they just drop it bc they can’t be bothered. You could literally write half a season of this show on this lol, MAYBE MORE??

Interesting! You know, I see a lot of unique ships in the fandom and I don’t always know who starts them. I wish I had the power to spread a unique ship as well, haha.

I wish, my Dear Laurens, it might be in my power, by action rather than words to convince you that I love you. I shall only tell you that ’til you bade us Adieu, I hardly knew the value you had taught my heart to set upon you. Indeed, my friend, it was not well done. You know the opinion I entertain of mankind, and how much it is my desire to preserve myself free from particular attachments, and to keep my happiness independent of the caprice of others. You should not have taken advantage of my sensibility to steal into my affections without my consent.

Letter from Alexander Hamilton to John Laurens

“Really good friends”

  • what she says: i'm fine

Such a wife as I want will, I know, be difficult to be found, but if you succeed, it will be the stronger proof of your zeal and dexterity...To excite their emulation, it will be necessary for you to give an account of the lover—his size, make, quality of mind and body, achievements, expectations, fortune, &c. In drawing my picture, you will no doubt be civil to your friend; mind you do justice to the length of my nose and don’t forget, that I ⟨– – – – –⟩.
  • After reviewing what I have written, I am ready to ask myself what could have put it into my head to hazard this Jeu de follie. Do I want a wife? No—I have plagues enough without desiring to add to the number that greatest of all; and if I were silly enough to do it, I should take care how I employ a proxy. Did I mean to show my wit? If I did, I am sure I have missed my aim. Did I only intend to ⟨frisk⟩? In this I have succeeded, but I have done more. I have gratified my feelings, by lengthening out the only kind of intercourse now in my power with my friend. Adieu
  • Yours.

I know I’ve talked about this before but I don’t care, I wanna talk about it again. In my opinion, Davy Jones and Calypso had the best love story in the POTC saga. Why? Because it seemed like a traditional mythical love story. A pirate fell in love with a goddess, she gave him a haunted task, he waited for her but she didn’t go because of her nature, he helped bind her to human form and… the rest is just tragedy. And the fact that we only got one scene with the two of them but the tragic love is so well presented… that’s very powerful storytelling and I wish there was more time devoted to them. but at the same time, I like the minimal scenes because it shows how interesting this dynamic is

Also, human!Davy is pretty handsome…

Creepypasta #708: A Boy And His Powers

Story length: Medium

I noticed at a very young age that I had this power. It started by finding a dead bird. I cradled the little thing and as I wished for it to come back, I felt a heat well up inside me and the bird flew away.

I would discretely do the same thing for the family dog, and then again when my little sister’s beloved turtle stopped moving. It was hard to keep it a secret as pets were miraculously recovering, but I thought of myself as a sort of super hero and never told a soul.

When I was 11, my little sister caught a terrible disease. Her organs began failing, she basically was immobile and could only scream in pain. The doctor’s were stumped, and the family was devastated as we were forced to watch her suffer.

Finally, there was nothing more we could do but bring her home and try to make her as comfortable as possible. I wasn’t sure if I could use my powers on a person but I sure as hell wanted to try. It was late at night when her fate finally came.

I snuck in and laid my little hands on her stiff body. I felt the heat, my own tears, and then little sis opened her eyes! I was about to scream for joy when she locked eyes with mine and whispered, “It was mum.”

I heard my mother enter the room, and close and lock the door behind her.
