Leonard was out of breath by the time he reached Ray by Oculus.
“Don’t you dare.” He says, taking deep breaths in between each word.
“I have to, you know that.” Ray smiles, tilting his head.
“The hell you do! You think this is the right thing to do? You do this, you won’t be there for all the other times the world needs you.” Leonard says, grabbing his arm, as if preparing to pull him away.
“Hey, it’s okay. This is what I’m supposed to do. I can feel it. I’ve always wanted to make a real difference, to really make my life matter…” Ray replies.
“What are you talking about?” Leonard says, putting his hand on Ray’s face, “like you haven’t mattered? Like you’re not important unless you kill yourself for us? We’re not that important, the world isn’t that important! Don’t do this, don’t go.” He finds himself begging.
Ray smiles, furrowing his brow at the same time. Mixed signals.
“I have loved you ever since our first day on the Waverider. And I’ll love you until the second I die.” He says. Then, in a rare moment of violence against his own team, his own love, he knocks Leonard out.
By the time Leonard wakes up, Ray is gone. His first words upon waking, before he realizes where he is and what’s happened are “I love you too”.
