Hemingway: drabble challenge, 100 word challenge, yes the title is included in the word count, fight me, angst, sad, baby shoes

F Scott Fitzgerald: idk what I’m doing, lol party fic, I’m supposed to be working on something else right now, the real otp is despair

Virginia Wolfe: stream of consciousness, tw: depression and anxiety, tw: food mention, not sure what else to tag this as

Sylvia Plath: esther is not like other girls, depression, suicide, hurt/comfort, fuck the patriarchy

Edgar Allan Poe: detective au, everyone’s a suspect, darkfic, this was supposed to be satire, I’m not sure what happened,

Shakespeare: historical au, for Lizzy <3 <3 <3, either everybody lives or no on lives I haven’t decided yet, dick jokes, puns, stole this from Marlow not even sorry lmao

Jane Austen: hurt/comfort, fluff, angst, true love, dancing!, slow burn, don’t worry they all get there in the end (:

Captain Steve Rogers, Lovecraftian Horror

Title: The Miskatonic Project
Rating: PG-13 for horror themes, death
Summary: Abraham Erskine may have invented something new with the Serum – or maybe he re-created something very old. Something…Elder.
Notes: I should be working on like three other fanfics but I had a TERRIBLE DREAM this afternoon and anyway this only took about half an hour to write.

***

Steve came out of the Vita-Ray machine…different.

Of course he looked different – taller, thickly muscled, skin gleaming. But it wasn’t the change in his appearance so much as the…sensation people felt around him. Howard claimed not to feel it, and Erskine died before he could weigh in. Peggy felt it, but not in the way others did. To her, he seemed otherworldly, but like an angel or a religious vision – comforting under a layer of unreality. She even liked the strange black pupils he’d developed, so big and dark you could hardly see the whites of his eyes at all.

Others, however….

She didn’t see him pull the Hydra agent out of the submarine after Erskine’s assassination. Only three people did – a cab driver, a little boy, and the boy’s mother. The cab driver wouldn’t say a word, and the boy’s mother stuttered and stammered so badly they finally gave up. The little boy just said, “Well, he got him,” and looked admiringly at Steve.

Steve wasn’t wet, but the submarine lay on the deck of the pier, and the man next to it was dead, a rictus of horror on his face.

There was a guitarist who was supposed to come in and couldn’t make it. Ryan, who is an engineer in the studio, says I can see if Mitch can come down. He came in and he was just a monster. The second day he couldn’t come down because he had to do a shift in the pizza shop. The thing with Mitch is that something felt so new to me – he was someone else who had never done it before. He was working in a pizza shop and had never been in a studio. It felt like we had each other to walk out together. He was someone who had no preconceptions about me or who I was or anything and he’s a legend. Now he’s one of my closest friends.

haroldhutchinsofficial  asked:

does the person on the nintendo post even know anything abt climate clothing bc like. the gerudo outfits make zero sense. u dont wear bikinis in the desert or u would fry in the sun like an egg yolk. u wear loose, light clothing that covers as MUCH skin as possible bc that protects it from the sun. u know like, actual people that live in desert climates?? tf??

Also, Olivia’s clothing makes zero sense because almost every island Captain is dressed better for the weather?? And she isn’t even close to water her specialty is rock type so??

As a person who lived in tropical climates, that’s not….. a terrible thing to wear but unless you’re going to the beach you’re going to suffer. Plus, their is no! reason! for! her! to! be! in! heels!!!! That’s literally such an ineffective way to dress!!

And you cam see that this is a common thing that Nintendo does with black women. They’re sassy and “”exotic””

I… whatever.

Moving onto the subject of Twintelle! Let’s look at the other ARMS female fighters.

Ribbon Girl: A short skirt but has workout shorts underneath them, which makes sense it’s very practical!

Min Min: Same thing for her, a short skirt with slightly longer workout shorts!I mean it’s an ass shot which is…. great but I’ll leave that alone for the moment.

Mechanica: I mean the only thing you can see is her head… so no comment

But then you get to Twintelle and her outfit is very different from what the other female fighters are wearing?

She has skin tight clothes and isn’t wearing a skirt. Which all the female characters have skin tight shirts but there’s something different about Twintelle’s. I’ll let you marinate on that.

She has oiled up skin and yes, I know the other fighters look shiny but there’s a difference in shiny and intentionally oiled up (especially since nintendo loves their oiled up dark characters)

The way Twintelle stands, walk, looks is all COMPLETELY different than the other female fighters!!! She has an over exaggerated ass (which they kinda do with Min Min but I will not speak on that) and everyone else is wearing sneakers yet she’s wearing heels!! She’s obviously supposed to be the “”sexy one”” and tbh when Arin said she was his favorite she was dead to me

And as for the entirety of the Gerudo race, read this cause it’ll do a better job then I ever could.

And Marina they have no excuse for. It’s…. so blatant. I can’t even say anything just go look at pictures of her standing next to Pearl. Then compare her to Callie and Marie. Just???????? Okay.

Nintendo has a race issue and this is 1) nothing new and 2) something white men people love to ignore. I’m not the first person to say something, I’m not the last. And y’all need to stop acting as if it’s “empowering” or “outstanding “””””feminism”””””” that all of Nintendo’s darker characters are far too sexualized. If you only support dark characters when they’re eye candy then I have a surprise for you!! You are racist!!!!! Congrats!!!!!!!

As a preemptive measure, if there is hate send to me for this please use MLA formatting.

This got so intense I’m sorry. Liking these characters doesn’t make you a bad person btw, but please consider why you like them if you do, especially if you aren’t black nor brown. Dark skinned folks (mostly women) constantly have to fight for people to see them as anything more than sexual objects for white folks.

(#long post//, #racism)

jacksonwang852g7: My Dearest Mom happy birthday! 🎁🎊🎈🎉
Thank you for being by my side during my birthday, always insist of going to the supermarket even though you don’t feel well, just to cook me dinner. Always organizing and cleaning up my room. Always there waiting for me until I sleep. Basically thinking about me every moment. Always worrying about my health condition, about the amount of time I could sleep.
But to be honest, it really hurts me deep down my heart. You’ve already been through a lot back then while raising me up. And as your son I don’t want you to suffer anymore and I really want you to do what you loved to do and what you wanted to do.
I should be the one who is taking care of you and dad now.
Maybe in your perspective, sometimes you would say it’s a waste of money, waste of time and it’s not important.
But I just want you to know, as your son, The fact that I can do something for you, it’s happier than anything else, and more important than anything else.
Maybe I can’t be with you because of work all the time, not being able to do what a son is supposed to do. Truly sorry but I always think about you, and I wish you can be happy every day.
The world, no the greatest mom in the universe.
Happy birthday 🎂

ok i've out for a year maybe... but you arr ENGAGED NOW?? thats so awesome and i want to hear everything about it pretty pleaaaaase((:

sweats if you want to..sweats more

Okay..SO. Sasha’s birthday was closing by at the horizon, that’s when he started to tease me that there is the best kind of present he wants to make himself (just in case no, it wasn’t so self-assured, because we talked about eventual wedding before and it wasn’t out of blue or totally unplanned thing!), after some of preparational teasing done, he started to send me vague messages with pictures, each had a certain number hidden within. Theeen Sasha started to hide (so I could find them) different notes with drawings on it, it all forming in a quest!

By this time poor Sasha was starting to get very sick.

Once I had everything, there was a login and password to a page he made on our social network (similar to facebook) that said something like “happiness is near:”D”. And something about an envelope which I will have to find later. After that there was another note, he drew his friend, and it gave me his phone number and written “If you want that envelope, call me, say Hiiiii”, so I called Roma the next day (the day of Sasha’s birthday), yelled Hiiiiii, and he arranged a meeting at a certain time and place. I went there, Roma did too, gave me a cute small envelope that had another note from Sasha with another place and time! Ahaha, poor Roma, after that he had to go. Rode so far to the center just to get back in a minute. But that’s what friends are for, I guess!

So, going to the next (final) spot, I came a little earlier than I was supposed to, didn’t see Sasha at first, but then I did, and went there, he was standing in the middle of the Colonnade. He went like congratulaaations, you did it, you won the quest and did everything correctly, something like this! Then he put out roses from behind his back and I was like laskdjalsdk they were white and red and very pretty. I remember everything so vague from here because I was  like LKSdjlsd already, I think Sasha said something else, but I don’t remember clearly. After that though, I do, because it was quite funny but perfect for me, because he went like “ouch ouch, my knee” to get on his knee and i think by that moment I started to tear up?? I had my suspicions in the middle of this quest, but I wasn’t sure, but I still got super emotional. Then he put out the capsule with the ring and asked me if I will become his wife and (SPOILERS) i said of course yes.

Then I think some women started to clap and cheer and I was still a bit lskjdlskdjs

Once we went home though, we measured Sasha’s temperature and it was like 38-39 something..had to heal him:D He said later that he wanted to say a lot when proposing, but got nervous:”) I’m kind of not getting too detailed here because it’s pretty long as it is, but it’s perfect the way it is for me:”)

anonymous asked:

the problem with matpat, in my opinion is well how do i even explain it. Frankly the best way to pinpoint my problem with MatPat is a FNAF theory for the latest game in the series, Sister Location. You know, the game series that ABSOLUTELY MADE HIS DAMN CHANNEL and he spends 5 minutes before tackling the theory at hand criticizing Scott Cawthon on his writing and that he, MatPat, knows better what's canon than Scott Cawthon. He's so overly smug and arrogant.

You guys want to know my problems with MatPat?

This anon pretty much just underlined one of my most major points.

Here’s something so many people don’t seem to get about the field both I and MatPat are in:

Channels like ours, despite how much original material we try to make and inject into our videos, survive completely on the content other people make. We are ‘derivative content channels’–we only get to make videos because other people made something we can discuss, and analyze, and rotate all around to show our audiences all the cool pieces involved in a thing that someone else made.

When it comes to mainstream media products like theatrical films, major console video games, etc., it’s more than okay to complain and talk about their faults and failings; these are professional-grade products that are supposed to be of the highest quality and pedigree, made by veterans and educated professionals in their fields with plenty of money and resources to do the job write and make sure consumers feel good.

When it comes to independent material, like I mostly cover, you’re dealing with someone who was brave enough to try something without all the pedigree, resources, power, and experience of the mainstream field. And often, the independent material is made by someone who did everything themselves.

If you’re making your bread and butter on YouTube covering mainstream stuff, you’re part of a very large group in a very large field of media that extends well beyond YouTube.

If you’re covering indie material and lone creators who are making things with cameras they bought at a local store and computers in their basements after long days of work in their home town, then you’re working with underdogs, and being a parasite to those underdogs instead of a mutualistic symbiote is totally intolerable to me. You don’t go and tear down people who have nothing and are just trying to make their way up, and if you’re gaining something from them, you’d better be giving something in return.

Scott Cawthon’s Five Nights at Freddy’s series has been MatPat’s biggest goldmine, and I’ve seen MatPat turn from being a mutualistic symbiote to hateful parasite while still fully aware that Scott Cawthon is an indie creator whose work made Game Theory thousands and thousands of dollars.

I know YouTube figures, and I can tell you that MatPat’s FNAF videos have certainly made him at least $1,000 each, with earlier entries making at least $3,000 by the time they made 3 million views. It’s not possible that they haven’t.

Has Scott himself become wealthy from his creation? Hell yeah! Does that change the fact that he’s an indie creator who got extremely lucky and does everything himself, and all of his work is the reason MatPat’s been making a disgusting amount of YouTube bucks?

NO.

If you want to see the phrase “Biting the hand that feeds you” in action, look no further than Game Theory. MatPat’s very direction for Five Nights coverage has gone from biting the hand that fed him to actually eating it for the sole purpose of hurting Scott Cawthon while still making money off his work.

I have watched MatPat attack Scott Cawthon, insult Scott Cawthon, tell the man he can’t write his own games correctly, insist that he’s broken his own story because MatPat can’t make sense of something, and generally be a hateful, disrespectful, ungrateful narcissist.

I HAVE SEEN MATPAT MAKE A THEORY VIDEO MONTHS IN ADVANCE OF A GAME BEING RELEASED. Do you think that’s because he GENUINELY figured out a game he hadn’t even seen, or because he knew he’d make LOTS OF MONEY doing it?

And yet MatPat still has the audacity to attack, insult, demean, and devalue a man whose work has personally made him thousands of dollars and many millions of views and subscribers. Not just a man, either, but an indie creator who has done everything himself and devoted so many sleepless nights to making Five Nights at Freddy’s games, doing his best to improve each new installment so it makes us more impressed than before.

Scott Cawthon got lucky, yes, but he’s still the man who was about to quit his dream of being a professional video game developer if ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ a Hail Mary attempt, did not work. He still has run this ship alone and done everything in his power to keep it pure and stay a Scott Cawthon original despite all the success and fame he’s achieved.

Is the man above criticism because of who he is, what he’s been, and what he’s achieved? No, of course not. But should criticism of him and his work be delivered respectfully, in a way that isn’t smug and cruel?

Yes, especially when it’s criticism levied by someone who made thousands of dollars off Scott Cawthon’s work and continues to do so. Instead, MatPat chose to effectively spit in Scott’s face with his platform while reaching into his wallet.

And that’s just one major reason I lost immense respect for him.

MBTI Types as Things They Do Right After They Say They’re Going to Do Something Productive

(first of all thanks for reading past that mess of a title)

ENFP: Literally anything else they deem at all important that HAS TO BE DONE RIGHT NOW

ENFJ: Find someone to talk them in to/out of it

ENTP: *laughs* “just kidding”

ENTJ: Lowkey guilt you for not working too

ESFP: *sigh* *doesn’t move*

ESFJ: Awkwardly sit and wait for everyone else to prepare to do it with them

ESTP: Sulk for a while due to the mere idea of work

ESTJ: Try to get other people to do it with them

INFP: Stall x 100000 and stay on tumblr for “just a bit longer”

INFJ: “wow, I am suddenly really hungry; how about that”

INTP: Reevaluate how important the thing actually is

INTJ: Try to find a more reasonable time to do it, which is conveniently far later in time

ISFP: Absentmindedly doodle or play with things around them

ISFJ: Try to help someone else with something more interesting instead

ISTP: Try to find any way out of it

ISTJ: Something else that they consider productive, just not the thing they were supposed to do

Drarry Eighth Year

I am literally such trash for the Drarry Eighth Year trope. Seriously. Give me Harry going back to school because he’s not sure what he’s supposed to do next. Give me Draco going back because he’s determined to do something with his life. Give me awkward meetings in the shared common room at 3am because neither of them can sleep, and quiet looks at the other, realising that they have nightmares too. Give me Harry watching Draco across the hall and noticing he barely eats, and Draco watching Harry and wondering why no one else comments on how unhappy he seems. Give me tentative hands touching by the common room fireplace and those first terrifying realisations that when they look at one another now, it feels different. Give me Ron and Hermione figuring it out first, Ron being exasperated and Hermione giving Harry those small, knowing smiles. Give me inter house unity parties and drinking games and drunken confessions of “I like you” and “yeah well I like you more, so there” and awkwardly avoiding one another the next day. Give me frustration at not spending time together until someone finally corners the other in an alcove, the tension building until one of them just SNAPS and pushes the other against the wall, kissing him like he’ll die without the taste of his lips. Give me Draco having his own room and inviting Harry back. Give me all the awkward first times, and all the slow, burning, brilliant ways these two idiots fall in love over and over again at Hogwarts after the war.

A Deal With The Devil

The deal was simple, we’d get to ask him a couple of questions and he got to ask us a couple of questions. A bit odd if you ask me. What could The Devil possibly want to know from us? I couldn’t tell you.

“Is heaven real?” I asked.

“Yes,” he replied, his voice like dying embers in a fireplace, “and so is hell.”

“Who goes to heaven?”

“Whoever God wants there.”

“I’m afraid that’s much too vague for us.”

“What’s that like?” he asked, his eyes perking up.

“I’m sorry?”

“What’s it like to be afraid?”

A bit confused, I tried my best to describe the feeling of fear. My explanation was a bit clumsy but he appeared to be satisfied with it.

“Why’d you want to know that?” I asked.

“Because when God made me, he didn’t give me the ability to feel fear. I can’t feel lots of things.”

“What can you feel?”

“Pain.”

I got us back on track.

“Can you elaborate on your answer from before? About heaven?”

“Of course. Heaven is open to all of God’s creations, whatever they do.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. When I was called in, the people in charge told me that my primary objective was to secure information on how humanity could get to heaven. With that sorted, anything else I gathered was a bonus.

“Are you going to heaven too? Since you were created by God,” I asked.

“I could, but I won’t,” he replied.

“Why?”

“Because I committed the most egregious sin. I did something only God was supposed to do.”

“What’s that?”

“I tried to create angels. They didn’t work out. My angels were made in my image, so I guess I’m to blame. All they do is cause suffering and destruction, so God said they had to go to hell, to suffer for an eternity”

“You mean the demons?”

“Yes, I guess I do. I couldn’t go to heaven, not while my creations were suffering. So I decided that when the time came, I would travel to hell and suffer with them.”

“Why?”

“Because I love them.”

I checked my watch, “Time’s almost up.”

“Yes it is.” he replied.

“I have to go back and get debriefed.” I said, preparing to leave the facility. “They’ll be ecstatic when they get the good news.”

“And what might that be?”

“That no matter what we do, we’re going to heaven.”

“But you’re not, or anyone else for that matter.”

“But,” I said, my voice wavering, “You said…”

“Yes, I know what I said my child. But you’re not one of God’s creations,” he said with a tone I would mistake for sadness if I didn’t know better,

“You’re one of mine.”

Pairing: Jughead x Reader

Description: The reader returns, and she offers the writer some explanations that he’s been waiting for

Warnings: none

Word count: 1,041

A/N: It’s here! I am so so so sorry for making you guys wait this long, I had so much going on this week and I had barely any time to write at all. I hope this makes up for it, enjoy!

Jughead didn’t expect for (Y/N) to return to Pop’s; in fact, he thought she’d leave town.  However, the following night he was proven wrong when she walked in and sat across him in their usual booth.

“You’re here,” he stated. (Y/N) quirked an eyebrow.

“You expected otherwise?” she inquired, crossing her arms.

“Well, to be fair, I hadn’t seen you in about a month before yesterday,” Jughead defended himself.  (Y/N) sucked in a breath and went to contradict him, but she realized he was right, so she shut her mouth.  They sat in silence, both of them avoiding eye contact with each other.  Finally, (Y/N) sighed and broke the quiet.

“So I’m guessing you want to talk about it,” she said, not even bothering to pull out a book.  Jughead nodded as he closed his laptop.

“I think I deserve a bit more information than the fact that you were born in Riverdale,” he grumbled.

“You do,” she agreed.

“So why did you think that was important to tell me?” Jughead began the interrogation. “Out of all the things to say to stop me from leaving, why that?”

“Well it worked, didn’t it?” (Y/N) attempted to joke, but Jughead didn’t even crack a smile.  She sighed and continued.  "I don’t know, because that’s the beginning. I’m a reader, Jug, I like to start at the beginning of a story.“

"And so your beginning started here.”

“Yes.”

“But then you moved somewhere else?” Jughead asked.  (Y/N) nodded.  "Why?“

"Because we had to,” she responded.  "My parents were… unpleasant people, to say the least.  Bad people tend to mingle, and thus my parents met the Blossoms.“  Jughead’s head perked up at the mention of the family.

"The Blossoms?” he echoed.  "As in Jason Blossom?“

"No, the other notorious Blossom family in Riverdale,” she rolled her eyes, sarcasm oozing from every word.  "Yes, Jason Blossom’s family.“  Jughead’s silence signaled for her to continue.  “My family and their family had this long-lasting feud for as long as I can remember.”

“So is that why you left?” he asked.  “Because of the feud?”

“Yes,” she answered tentatively, “and no.  It’s complicated.  You see, I didn’t leave Riverdale with my parents.”  (Y/N) paused for a moment, biting her lip.  “My parents were murdered.”  Jughead’s eyes widened as he realized the severity of her situation.

“The Blossoms did it?” he immediately assumed.  (Y/N) shook her head.

“Not that we know of,” she replied.  “They never figured out who did it.  Yes, the Blossoms were high on the suspect list, but personally, I don’t think it was them.  They’re too snobbish to actually murder someone.”  The pair fell into a silence, Jughead attempting to soak up all the information he was just given.  (Y/N) lazily glanced around the dinner, scanning the strangers’ faces.

“Why’d you come back?” Jughead spoke up.  (Y/N)’s eyes flicked back to his face.

“They were about to sell our old home,” she shrugged.  “My aunt was infuriated, so she packed up all our things and moved here.” Jughead had so many more questions swirling around his mind, but when he observed (Y/N)’s face, he saw how tired and deflated she looked.

“I’m sorry,” he apologized, “this is too much for you.  I shouldn’t have pressured you to tell me everything at once.”

“No, it’s fine,” she insisted, shaking her head.  “I want to tell you, I… you deserve to know.”  Jughead reached across the table, grabbed (Y/N)’s hand, and gazed at her in a manner she couldn’t quite distinguish.  He didn’t say anything, and neither did she.  They just sat there in the booth, on a quiet day in Pop’s, Jughead holding (Y/N)’s hand and she was letting him.  Without speaking, she understood what he was trying to tell her: there was nothing left to say.

For the next two weeks, neither Jughead nor (Y/N) said anything to each other.  They still went to Pop’s every night, and they sat together at the same booth.  But (Y/N) always had a book, and Jughead always had his laptop.  Frequently, when one of them wasn’t looking, the other would glance up and stare for just a moment.

On a slow Tuesday, Veronica entered Pop’s.  She was only there to pick up the food she and her mom had ordered, but she noticed (Y/N) and Jughead sitting together at a booth, and so she sped over there.

“You’re back,” she noted, sitting down next to (Y/N).  She glanced up, putting Frankenstein down, and shot Veronica a timid smile.

“I’ve been back for a few weeks,” she responded.  Veronica furrowed her eyebrows.

“Really?” she questioned, shifting her gaze to Jughead.  He didn’t look up from his computer.  (Y/N) awkwardly nodded, turning back to her novel.  Veronica glanced back and forth between (Y/N) and Jughead, waiting for one of them to say something.  “Do you guys ever talk?”

“It’s not always necessary,” Jughead replied, rolling his eyes.

“Well yeah,” Veronica shrugged, “but you guys are dead silent.  Neither of you have spoken to each other since I got here.”  When neither of them replied to her comment, Veronica understood that she was unwanted and left.

The two sat in silence for another hour before Jughead interrupted it by slamming his laptop shut.

“Okay, I’ve spent two weeks thinking about what to say,” he started, catching (Y/N)’s attention.  She lifted her eyes from her book and stared at Jughead, puzzled.  “But I don’t know.  I don’t know what to say!  How do I respond to the fact that your parents were murdered?”

“You don’t have to sa-”

“Yes I do!” Jughead interjected.  “Because we’re… friends, we’re friends.  And I’m supposed to say something to make you feel better.”  (Y/N) tilted her head sideways as she gazed at Jughead, trying to think of a reply.

“You still have a question,” she finally said, “don’t you?  And you didn’t want to say anything else because you didn’t want to tempt your own curiosity.”

“No,” Jughead shook his head, “no, I-”

“Just ask,” (Y/N) stopped him.  “Just ask me, Jug.”  He inhaled sharply, and examined her face.  There was no doubt, no hesitation; just determination with a hint of anger. Jughead sighed, giving into (Y/N)’s, and his own curiosity’s, demands.

“What’s your real name?”

Part four here

Only Echoes

My ex’s ghost begins to haunt my apartment a week after the break up. I spot him sitting in our the breakfast nook, sunlight falling like dust through his torso to the rumpled rug in front of the small table. He’s staring out the window, parts of him fading in and out of view.

“No,” I say, grabbing the counter in case my suddenly weak legs betray me. “No.”

He turns and smiles at me with the weight of the world in his eyes.

I grab my cell phone from the pocket of my sweatpants and call him. One ring. Two rings. Three.

“Hello?”

My hand tightens around the edge of the counter until I can hear my bones scraping together. “You ass. You don’t get to do this to me. Make it go away.”

He’s silent for a long moment. Then he sighs. “My ghost?”

Yes,” I say. “Get rid of it.”

“You know that’s not how this works,” he says.

“I’m the one who’s supposed to haunt you,” I say. “You broke up with me. That’s how this is supposed to go. So stop.”

Stop or come back.

But he doesn’t say anything else before he hangs up.

I turn to scream at his ghost but, like him, it’s gone.

“He’s one of those,” my sister says knowingly. She sounds far away and tiny over the computer’s speakers. “You better be careful. Sometimes they don’t leave.”

I consider my cup of cocoa. She’s holding a matching cup half a world away so that they’re connected. I wonder if she’s foregone her usual shot of baileys this time. “What do I do then?”

“Try to move on anyway,” she says. Behind her something peeks around the kitchen doorway and is gone before I can make out who. My sister’s been drinking for a decade and hasn’t once talked about quitting.

“Right,” I say and imagine the poor quality of the speakers hides the hollowness in my voice.
