Word Count: 2045

It was another normal day in S.T.A.R. Labs.

“Cisco, where’s the nearest exit?”

“Take a right, and there’s a stairway that should lead you right to the parking lot.”

You added, “And make sure you don’t run into that-“

“The meta? Too late.”

Your heartrate increased. “Barry?” You leaned over Caitlin’s shoulder, monitoring his vitals. Everything had spiked.

His labored breathing reached your ears. “How do I stop him?”

Caitlin, Cisco, and you stared at each other. Cisco started, “If we can completely cut him off from water-“

“No,” you told him. “He’s done that before.”

“But, he does require a visual.” Caitlin smiled,

The three of you spoke into the mic. “Barry,” you started, “you need to cut off his sight.”

“If you ran around him-“ Caitlin hypothesized.

Cisco finished, “You can do the same thing you did to Clyde.”

You held your breath. Barry wasn’t answering.

“(Y/n), breathe,” Caitlin reminded you.

You inhaled deeply. “Barry? Barry, where are you?” When he didn’t answer, you panicked, “Barry?!”

Wind rushed throughout cortex, along with yellow lightning. Barry stood there with a smile on his face. “My headset short-circuited,” he explained. Barry shrugged.

You sighed with relief. With a grin, you wrapped your arms around Barry’s torso. His heartbeat steadily beat in your ears. You pulled away from your friend and slapped his shoulder. “You shouldn’t scare people like that!” You sighed. “But great job.” You laughed, shaking your head.

As Caitlin and Cisco congratulated Barry, your phone rung. With a quizzical look on your face, you answered it. “Hello?”

“Still not checking the contact. I still think that’s dangerous.”

You laughed. “Ray! How are you?”

“Flying. Oh, well, I’m fine, but I’m flying…”

“Where to?”

“Go outside.”

Your face lit up. You hung up and announced, “Guys! Ray’s back!” With those last words, you rushed outside.

Ray and you were best friends. Ever since the two of you were little, you experimented with all the technology you could get your hands on. As the two of you grew up, your paths diverged. Ray became the CEO of Palmer Technologies. You were taken under Harrison’s Wells’ wing and became part of the amazing Team Flash. However, your friendship was so strong that you never lost touch.

You beamed as you spotted the famous Atom suit fly down and land gracefully on the ground. “Way better landing than last time.”

You scoffed. “You said it.” You hugged him patting him on the back before separating yourself from him. “It’s so nice to see you again.”

“And you, too.”

You smiled and turned to your team. “You guys remember the Atom, right?”

“How could we forget?” Cisco shook his hand and patted his back. “Plus, I helped make that exo-suit. How’s the power source?”

“Better. I made a few adjustments, but all around, better. Thanks to you.”

Caitlin smiled. “It’s nice to see you again, Atom.”

“So…” Barry drawled. “where’s Felicity?”

You inhaled through your teeth. You stared at your feet.

Ray chuckled. “Oh, well, Felicity and I are not… We’re friends, but we-“

“They’re not together,” you stated.

“Still friends, though.”

Barry stared at the two of you. You were so close to him, emotionally and physically. Sure, Ray was a great guy. He was smart, good-looking, fit, and a superhero. Barry knew he was a good guy, but… he couldn’t help but feel upset when he saw you two together.

“Anyway,” you chimed in. “I planned a day with Ray, so… I’ll see you guys later?”

“Yeah!” Caitlin answered for everyone. “Just, go have fun.”

“Hey, wanna learn how to fly?” Ray suggested.

You nodded enthusiastically. “That would be beyond awesome.”

Ray held your waist tightly, and the two of you took off.

After flying around a bit, the two of you stopped at Jitters to sit down and talk. “So, are you really ok, Ray?”

“I’m fine, (Y/n).”

You tiled your head and raised a brow.

“I mean, Felicity does have a thing with Oliver. It’s meant to be.” He shrugged. “It just took me a while.”

You reached out and held his hand. “Hey, you’re gonna find someone. You’re too great a guy, ok? Plus, you’ll always have me.”

He laughed. “So, how’s your love life going?”

You shrugged. “Not much.”

He mimicked your head tilt and raised brow.

“What?”

“The way you look at Barry makes it pretty obvious.”

You rolled your eyes. “Come on, Barry and I? No, he would never… I mean, he wouldn’t ever see me like that.” You stared at your drink and gulped. “He loves Iris. Actually, he’s meant to be with Iris. The future newspaper thingy says so.”

Ray’s eyes widened. “Future newspaper thingy?!” He gasped, looking around. “Sorry, um… future thingy… Wait a minute, didn’t Eddie Thawne… His… passing…. Didn’t that change the future?”

You looked up at your friend, curious to his theory.

“Who says that the great (Y/n) can’t change that?”

You shook your head, smiling. “If I could change that, then that would mean that Barry would be in love with me and that newspaper name would change.”

“I don’t know. Barry was staring at you when we left.”

“He was not.”

Your friend laughed. “Come on! It’s like when Oliver gazed at Felicity.”

You shook your head again, trying to wrap your mind around Ray’s thinking. Barry couldn’t like you back. He loved Iris. He never saw you as more than a friend and ally. That’s all you were. Right?

Ray reached over and grasped your hand. “I could detect Felicity’s and Oliver’s chemistry. You and Barry… you two could become something, too.”

You smiled.

Suddenly, a flash of yellow lightning caught the corner of your eye. You stood up, Barry immediately entering your thoughts.

“Go,” Ray instructed.

“My car’s not fast enough.”

He smiled. “I’ll take you.”

You arrived at Star Labs, Ray right behind you. “Barry?” you asked.

The young man was pacing around the cortex, scratching his neck. “(Y/n), hey. Um, do you two need anything?”

You stared at Ray, then the door.

Ray got the idea. “Right, I should go to my car and get… something. Yeah.” He left hastily, leaving Barry and you alone.

You pursed your lips. “I saw you at Jitters. Everything ok?”

“Yeah. Everything’s,” he cleared his throat, “fine.”

You tilted your head and approached him. “Barry, I know you well enough to know that something is a bit off. Are you ok?” Before he could reply, you cut him off, “And don’t say fine, because I know you are not fine.”

“I’m good, then.”

“Loopholes… Nice. New rule. I’ll ask a question, and you answer honestly.”

“(Y/n), you don’t have to worry about it, ok.” He shrugged with a smile that was a bit too tight. “Just go back to your… thing with Ray.”

You tilted your head in confusion. “Ray doesn’t need me. You do.”

He smiled. “Don’t worry about me,” he repeated.

You blinked. “But, I do worry about you. Why do you think I stay here?”

Barry stared at you, wanting an explanation.

You sighed, realizing what you had revealed. You ran a hand through your hair before leaning against the desk. “Look, I told Ray about Wells. He offered to take me home, to Star City.” You gulped. “I couldn’t. No matter how much a part of me wanted to. To leave Central City. To leave the place where my mentor turned out to be my worst nightmare. I had to stay. I knew I had to. You were in as much trouble as I was. You had burdens, too, and you even cut off so many people. I had to stay. To help you.” You took a risk and grasped his hand. “Barry, you can talk to me about anything, ok? Even embarrassing stuff. Especially embarrassing stuff.”

He laughed running hand through his hair. “Thanks.”

“Now, what is the thing that has the Flash pacing around a lab?”

“A girl,” he stated, shrugging. “She loves someone else. I can’t get in the way of that.”

You sighed. He was talking about Iris again and how she still oved Eddie. “I know the feeling,” you muttered.

“You do?”

“Of course. Actually, I’m living it right now.”

“Oh.” Barry sighed. You seemed to be talking about Ray and how he could still have feelings for Felicity.

You shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess that’s the cool thing about love. It makes people happy. I should probably be happy for him.”

“Are you?”

“I guess… In a way. I know he’ll be ok and that she’ll love him.” You gazed at Barry, shakily taking in a deep breath. “I guess, knowing that he’ll be ok helps me cope.”

Barry gulped. “Yeah. You should tell him.”

You scoffed. “Yeah, that sounds way easier than it actually is, Love Expert.”

Barry smiled, tightening his grip on your hand. “Just go. I’m sure that guy loves you, too. He did come all this way just to see you.”

You blinked. “Wait, what?”

Barry tilted his head in confusion. “Ray, the guy you like.”

Your jaw dropped. Then, you started to laugh. “Barry, I don’t like Ray!”

“Really?”

“No!” You shook your head. “Ray is my brother, my best friend. I could never think of him like that.”

“Well, so who were you talking about? Cisco? Do I know him?”

You shook your head. You pursed your lips and stared at your feet. “Yeah… you know him. It’s not Cisco, though. Um… The guy I like… he’s… dorky, and a gentleman. He’s smart and kind.” You licked your lips. “He’s… he’s you.”

Barry blinked. He froze. He stared at you. “Me?” he asked, pointing to himself.

You sighed, letting your head drop. “I know. It’s weird. You’re in love with Iris and destined to be with her. I can’t get in the way of that. Iris-“

“(Y/n), I don’t like Iris.”

You blinked. You froze. You stared at him. “You don’t?”

He shook his head, smiling. Barry placed his other hand on your intertwined ones. “I like you.”

You beamed. “Really?”

“Yeah, really.”

“I thought… Iris?”

“Yeah, I liked her a while back, but… I met you. You were so amazing, and I couldn’t help it. You make me… I’ve never felt like this, like what I feel now with iris, Linda, Patty… You’ve always been special to me.”

You giggled a little, your head spinning at the new revelation. “So… Love Expert, we like each other. What do we do now?”

Barry leaned in closer to you. “Well… Maybe…”

“Yeah?” You smiled a little, your lips so close to his.

The doors opened. Ray, Cisco, and Caitlin walked in.

Barry and you jumped up from the desk. However, Barry’s hand still clasped yours.

Cisco’s jaw dropped. Caitlin’s lips slowly and gradually curled into a smile. Ray nodded in approval. “I told you. You two have chemistry.”

“That’s what he was talking to you about,” Barry realized.

You tilted your head. “What did you think we were talking about?”

Barry blushed scarlet, almost as red as his suit.

You gasped. “You were so jealous!”

“I do not get jealous.”

You bit your lip, fighting a squeal. After smiling brightly for a few seconds, you sighed. “Ok, fine.”

“I was not jealous.”

“He was totally jealous,” Cisco stated.

Barry whined, “Cisco!”

“What?” The engineer shrugged. “If you had heat vision, ray would’ve been a puddle right when he arrived.”

You held on to Barry’s arm and kissed his cheek.

Your best friend smiled. “Ok, then, Caitlin, Cisco, and I need to fix the… um…”

“Car!” Caitlin offered. “The car broke down… We’ll just go and fix that.” The three left.

You laughed. “You were so jealous.”

“If I admit that I was jealous, which I wasn’t, then will we continue what we were doing?”

You grinned. “Sure.”

“I was jealous.”

You leaned in closer, whispering, “Good,” before finally kissing him. You smiled against his lips, wrapping your arms around his neck. You felt so giddy and excited as Barry kissed you back. His hand held your waist and pulled you closer.

You pulled away from him and sighed. “Maybe Ray should come over more often.”

“As long as I am still the guy you like.”

“Always.”

SO fun fact of the day: You know how Eggplant/Chicken/etc. Parmigiana has parmesan in the name? So like, you’d guess it originated in Parma? Nah son. Apparently the rights to claim the Parmigiana as their dish is currently being disputed by Sicily, of Southern Italy, and Parma of Northern Italy.

Kind of sounds like two brothers we’re sort of familiar with,…,,,.,.d,sajdaknfdas hetalia I’m talking about the Italy brothers from Hetalia god damn.

But yeah, here, have a dish that represents the adorable but kind of argumentative relationship shared by Romano and Italy.

Also, have a picture of my grandpa eating food like a dork.

P.S you’re gonna notice there’s not a lot of exact measurements with this recipe. That’s what I really like about it, you can fuck around and add/take away. That’s the cool thing about italian cooking, they really make it an art rather than a science.

Eggplant Parmigiana
(serves: 6 ramekin thingies)

-

Ingredients-

  • breadcrumbs
  • 2 Tbsp dried oregano
  • ¾ cups grated parmesan cheese (plus more for layering)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 large eggplant thinly sliced
  • Marinara Sauce (like a big jar. I decided to go the premade route because the home made stuff at the market basket by my house is too legit for words)
  • Shredded Mozzarella (like a lot)
  • Olive oil (for drizzling)
  • 2 Large eggs
  • All purpose flour
  • parsely (for pretty colors)
  • 1 adorable hungry grandpa (optional but recommended)

~

Procedure-

  • Thinly slice and remove the purple skin from the eggplant. Skin that mofo hard.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 F
  • Take three bowls and pour the breadcrumbs, oregano and parmesan in one, the beaten eggs in another, and the flour in the final one.
  • Dip each eggplant slice in flour, then drench it in the egg before covering it in the bread crumb mixture. Do this for all the eggplants.
  • Drizzle a baking sheet in olive oil and place all the eggplant slices on it. If they overlap don’t throw a shit fit, it’s cool. Drizzle the slices with more olive oil and place it in the oven.
  • Bake them until the undersides are browned, then flip each piece over and bake for like maybe 7-10 more minutes.
  • Remove the eggplants from the oven and start doing some layering shit.
  • Turn the heat on the oven up to 400 F
  • Put an eggplant at the bottom of each ramekin, if you have enough put a second one on top. Cover the slices with marinara and then cover the marinara in parmesan and shredded mozzarella.
  • Keep layering, and finish with the mozzarella on top.
  • Put those ramekins in the oven and let them bake until the cheese is browned slightly and bubbling.
  • Remove them from the oven, chop up some parsley and throw it on top.
  • Serve with some pasta tossed in sea salt, mashed garlic and olive oil.

grimes on instagram, talking about music technology ROLI blocks.:
grimesbear w me but gonna nerd out 4 a sec & also typing w fake nails so forgive typos. also tried to simplify my language but apologize if it doesnt make sense 2 non musicians or if its overkill if u do happen to know what im talking about; So a couple months ago Roli hit me up about making sound packs for their new hardware/ software intrument/thingy called Blocks, which I’m v excited abt cuz i make a lot of sound packs @ home and Am v keen to give it a try for somebody else, plus have just generally enjoyed making music on this thing.
Essentially, It’s sort of a synth-you can load different sounds into it from the software and create beats and instrumentals. The software element is where u access the sounds (u can access the software without the hardware on an ipad or smthn if u want to get an idea of the style of sounds and some of the features). It’s great for beginners becuz you can do things like choose a scale and then it visually lays it out for you so that if you don’t have formal training you can see/ understand how to compose a piece of music in a specific key.
Anyhoo, the thing i really love about this is that allows you to start producing music without necessarily having a lot of experience. (although if ur deep in it its still really fun – u can synch up the apps w DAWS like ableton if you want). it’s also ‘multi timbral’ like the seabord rise– so u can intuitively alter parameters like vibrato or whatever with ur fingers, you can make synths sound almost like natural vocals or violins etc. plus its cheap /portable. lastly, It’s modular, meaning you can buy the small individual pieces and slowly build the machine that suits you best and kind of design it yourself, rather than making a giant initial investment and theres no wires, they just kinda connect like lego.so yeah, I obviously get 2 stoked on gear sometimes, but I feel really passionate about this in particular because i believe it will bring the art of music production to more ppl & stoked that they asked me to be involved in creating sounds for it (alongside some v cool producers) haha.
