Hey there, yeah so I keep seeing these comments everywhere on facebook and stuff and I just wanted to answer them.

Auli'i is samoan and black who so happens to be born and raised in Hawaii.

Moana is not hawaiian. She is representing all polynesian cultures but strongly resembles more of the actors’ background which is Samoa. I believe Maori has a big part in it as well.

Longboards and Pizza (Harrison Wells x Reader)

Rating: G

Fandom: The Flash

Pairing: E-2 Harrison Wells & Reader (Platonic)

Credit: Personal

Knowing that Harry is wallowing in a pit of homesickness and despair over his daughter, you decide to give him some company one night with some pizza and beer. Being an out-of-state transplant yourself, you know a thing or two about homesickness.

In this one-shot, reader is a transplant from Hawaii. I also finished watching the episode where Cisco vibes Harry without his consent and it bugged me so much, I needed to vent a bit. After all, Harry already stated he didn’t Cisco “vibing” him. That was a serious breach of privacy and an already shaky trust. Furthermore, while there is drinking in this one-shot, both characters are legal adults and no one is getting drunk.

It was late. Even the hallway lights leading to the Cortex were dimmed to almost pitch black. It was only because you knew S.T.A.R Labs like the back of your hand now that you didn’t stumble or hit a wall…

“Ouch,” you muttered as your shoulder collided with the edge of the doorway of the Cortex. Glass bottles jangled and clinked and you glanced down to make sure your package was alright. Thankfully, the six-pack you brought was fine and you looked about the quiet lab for your target.

It all started when you left the lab earlier in the evening so you could pick up a couple things for dinner tonight. As you pushed the cart through the store, you grabbed some cereal, snacks to stash back at the lab, and some vegetables for the fish you were planning on cooking up at home. When you passed by the alcohol section, however, you quickly stopped and backtracked in shock. There on the shelf was a sight you never thought you would see outside of a World Market or specialty store: stocked cases of your favorite beer, Longboard.

Being from Hawaii, Longboards were a constant in your life, along with surfing, SPAM (despite hating the stuff), and pineapple on pizza. But since moving to Central City to finish your degree and take the internship at S.T.A.R. Labs, the drink became a rarity. Sure, you still ordered pineapple on pizza and yeah, you had to trade surfing out for snowboarding and hockey, but SPAM never made an inch into your household (your favorite cousin laughed for days when he came to visit a couple years ago). Missouri was known for good beer, you agreed on that fact as well, but the draft made on the mainland was heavier and didn’t sit well in your belly. Longboards were lighter and smoother without sacrificing the punch you were used too. Simply put, it reminded you of home where the ocean was your backyard and ohana wasn’t just a word, it was a way of life. Even after nearly seven years, you still felt like a fish out of water on the mainland…kind of like someone else you knew back at the lab.

Which was probably why you grabbed the beer, paid for your things, picked up two pizzas (one a meat-lovers and another with pineapple), and headed back to the lab. Of course, you were confused as to why you were driving back to the lab. Hell, you weren’t really sure of your reasoning as you walked into the Cortex, but the pieces did fall together when you caught sight of your quarry.

Harry was sitting in his usual spot, tinkering with his most recent project. Tools, papers, parts, and markers were scattered about the table and some sort of 1980’s music was blasting from the computer. Apparently, the music wasn’t as loud as you thought because when you collided with the wall, it alerted Harry to your presence. The man startled and grabbed the pulse rifle by his side, aiming before he realized it was you. Letting out an annoyed sigh, he lowered the gun and turned down the music.

“I thought you went home?” he asked curtly, turning back to his project. You shrugged as well as you could and dropped the six pack and pizza onto Caitlin’s computer station.

“Went to the store first,” you answered, heading to grab some paper plates and napkins. “Then I saw this and my evening plans changed. So I picked up some pizza and came back here. This one is a meat-lovers with mushroom and black olives.” It must have piqued Harry’s interest because he had put his project down to come investigate. When you turned back around after finding a roll of paper towels, the man had already piled three pieces of the meat-lovers onto his plate and was eyeing the case of beer.

“Why would a case of beer change your plans?”

“Because I realized with how crazy everything has been, how much I need some quiet and good company to spend it with.” You pulled out a bottle and used your bottle opener key chain to pop the top before handing it to Harry. “After the day we had today, you seemed like you could use it too.” Grabbing a beer and some pizza for yourself, you sat in the nearest chair and propped your feet on the desk. Harry didn’t say anything but sat down as well.

A couple bites into his pizza, he took a swig of the beer and hummed appreciatively. “Never heard of this brand before,” he murmured. “Is it just an Earth-1 thing?”

“Doubt it. If there is a State of Hawaii on your Earth, then there are probably Longboards.” Harry hummed again, assessing you closer this time.

“I didn’t know you were from Hawaii.”

“Born and raised,” you answered with a bright smile. “I’ve only been on the mainland seven years. Came here to finish my degree and start my internship. Stayed for the meta-humans and the superheroes,” you joked. A hint of a smile lifted the edges of Harry’s lips, though you saw it more in his eyes. It was one of the differences you noticed between the two Harrison Wells. Wells-Prime (thanks Cisco) had a nice smile but it didn’t reach his eyes that often. You often wondered if it was because of the loss he suffered, now you knew differently. This Wells though, E-2 Wells smiled more from his eyes. Even with the loss and regret that he wore on his shoulders, there were still times his eyes found a way to smile. You found it easier to be around him because of that quality.

“That explains the pineapple pizza,” he muttered around his own slice. You immediately glared at him.

“Don’t diss my pizza, Wells. At least mine has less of a chance of causing heart-attack.”

“At least I’m doing it right.” He took a sip of his beer and nodded. “The beer is good, however.” You glared at him again, but he just smiled playfully at you. That’s when you realized the quiet atmosphere had relaxed him enough to start teasing you…something the other Wells never did at all. You decided to ignore it and move on. Somehow, the intimate atmosphere did make it easier to open up to him.

“It’s hard to find this brand. Everything else tastes heavy when you’ve been raised with an island palate.”

“You’re homesick.” It wasn’t a question. You nodded, picking at the label. “Why not call up Snow or Ramon?”

“Because it’s not the same. Their family isn’t 3,000 miles and an ocean away.”

“Or a dimension away?” You glanced up for any hint of anger, but only found sadness and regret enveloping Harry like an aura once again. Silence fell between the two of you but it wasn’t as companionable as it was before. You reflected on the day’s events as you took a sip of beer.

“Harry? I was against Cisco using his abilities on you.” You felt his gaze on you as pushed a piece of pineapple around on your pizza. “It was an invasion of privacy and I’m sorry it happened.”

“You shouldn’t be the one apologizing for them, Y/N,” he said icily, more at the memory than you. You shook your head as you pulled your feet off the table and folded them cross-ways underneath you.

“I’m not apologizing for them. I’m apologizing for not pressing the matter harder. You’re right: you’re not this Earth’s Harrison Wells. Hell, the Harrison we knew wasn’t even him. He was Eobard Thawne wearing your doppelganger’s face. You may not have been completely upfront with your motives of coming here for our help, but I knew that if we had simply asked you instead of invading your personal space and life, you would have been honest.”

“And how do you know that?” Harry replied quietly. You smiled a bit and lifted your bottle.

“For one, intuition. Secondly, I never brought pizza and Longboards to Wells-Prime when I was feeling homesick. I don’t even think he really knew where I was from, to be honest,” you added offhandedly. You looked up when he reached over and tapped your knee, surprised to find a platonic sort of affection in his eyes.

“That was his loss. Hawaii is beautiful. My wife and I took Jesse there for family vacation a couple times. You have a lot of family there?” You nodded, swallowing your bite of pizza.

“More than. Some aren’t even blood ohana, just people who became ohana. It felt suffocating growing up, but…”

“You didn’t realize how lonely it was without them?” he finished. You nodded, understanding the man was feeling the same loneliness you felt when you first moved here.

“We’ll help you find Jesse and get her back,” you promised softly, meaning every word. “And until then, I’ll yell at Cisco and Cait for following through with that stupid “vibing” plan of theirs. I’m still mad at them for that.” Harry chuckled as he finished his beer.

“Thank you but I think I can handle Ramon on my own terms.”

“He already thinks you’re a dick. Next time he walks into the office, knock a couple things off his desk. It’ll get on his nerves,” you suggested. Harry snorted as he reached over and grabbed another bottle.

“I’ll keep that in mind, thank you.” Taking a sip, he nodded appreciatively. “This is very good beer.”

“At least someone around here has good taste.” Harry smiled and winked in response.

“Someone has too.” You rolled your eyes.

“Just eat your barbaric, artery-clogging pizza, Wells.”

1. Are you named after anybody?

Yes, my godmother. My godmother’s middle name is Eliana and I had been the only person to be named after her until her first and only granddaughter was born. *sobs* haha

6. What is your eye color?

Dark brown/Black? Might just be brown haha I can’t really tell sometimes.

9. What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?

Well, I’m from Hawaii and I’m currently in AZ so I’m pretty sure that that’s the farthest I’ve been.

15. Do you have any siblings?

Yaass I have two brothers and one sister. I’m the baby so I’m the most spoiled lmfao. I think this even goes for my uncles too. He once paid for my flight home for $800 and the only thing he wanted in return was a shirt from my college.

21. What was your favorite/worst subject in High School?

Does Yearbook count? IF it does, Yearbook was my favorite subject. If not then Science because even though I didn’t understand shit the teacher still gave me a good grade. Ha! Worst would have to be history. Almost didn’t pass high school because of it hahaha. My brother also went through the same thing with the same teacher. So the fact that we hate that teacher runs in the family lmfao

Send Me A Number (Not these ones though haha)

A little re-introduction…

Hey guys, so I’ve had this healthy eating/fitness blog for over four years now but I feel like I am probably still just a url on your dash. In 2017 I really want to connect with you guys and be an active blogger!

I started this blog when I was only 15 with the url live-life-eat-healthy, and here I am now, 19 and at uni studying Human Nutrition. I’ve wanted to study this because it has always been a topic that I am passionate about. My mum eats cleaner than anyone I know, and she has been doing it since the 80′s, well before healthy food became trendy.

Thought I’d get the ball rolling with 5 things about me, the girl behind @balanceyourplate

1. I was born in Auckland, New Zealand

2. I currently live in Dunedin, where I study at the University of Otago

3. After I finish my undergrad (BSc, majoring in human nutrition), I want to do a postgrad Masters in Dietetics

4. I was a competitive cheerleader for 5 years and have been to Hawaii, Florida and Australia to compete

5. My favourite food is probably sushi but fruit comes a close second

That’s all for now, message me if you have anything to ask, and I hope I can get to know you guys a lil better in the months to come. Let’s be real, isn’t it amazing that we have this network where likeminded people can encourage each other to lead healthier, happier lives?

Title: Fly High
Characters: Sehun/Reader
Genre: Fluff
Word Count: 1,019
A/N: Because anon requested a Sehun scenario on an airplane, so have my magic words and enjoy.

“Um, Miss?” Someone says, and you pull out your headphones to hear them better. “Are you in the right seat?” You don’t even bother looking at the guy as you show him your plane ticket.

“First Class, Deck A, Seat 4.” You say with a smug smirk on your face, putting your ear buds back in. You pocket your ticket, but suddenly the guy pulls your ear buds out. “Hey–” You turn to look at the rude, insensitive son of a–

“Yah, you can’t even take a joke?” He sits down in the empty seat beside you, and you stare at him with your mouth agape. He looks at you with a raised eyebrow, the corner of his lips slightly curled up. “What? You’ve never seen an idol before?”

“Not Oh Sehun, in the flesh.” You admit, and he chuckles at your reaction.

“Well, you didn’t do anything wrong. I was just playing with you.” He sighs, leaning back and crossing his arms, before shutting his eyes. “It’s a long flight from Seoul to Hawaii. I guess we’ll be seat buddies for a while.” He mumbles.

“Does that mean–?” You sit up in your seat, looking over the back and, like you were hoping, two other EXO members are seated behind you. “Well, I’ll be.” You whisper to yourself. They smile at you politely, and you return it, before slipping back into your seat and wondering what the heck Lee Soo Man asked you to come on this trip for.

“So, you know me, but what’s your name?” Sehun asks, opening his eyes and looking over at you. “You can’t leave me hanging.” He teases, smirking a little.

“It’s _____, from JEWELS.” You say your group name, hoping it’d spark some recognition. Sehun blinks at you, and for a moment, you think your plan worked, but then he says,

JEWELS, as in the clothing store?”

You sigh, shaking your head. “Forget it.” You shrug.

Luckily, instead of bugging you about it, Sehun pulls out his phone. “Oh,” He twists around the corner of his seat to see the other EXO members. You take the opportunity to look him over, and vaguely hear him say something about getting a text from SM. Sehun’s dressed in casual clothes, his hair matted against his forehead, and without makeup on.

Sehun in the raw. What a day you’re having.

When he moves back to sit normally, he catches your lingering stare. “Take a picture,” He jokes, smiling a bit. “It’ll last longer.”

“I don’t think I’ll need to..” You tell him, glancing down at your phone. You realize you received a text from SM, also. “Why are you heading to Hawaii again?” You ask.

Sehun leans over his seat to look at your phone. “Photo shoot, why?” You tilt your phone in his direction, and let him see for himself. “Oh.” He stammers, glancing up at you in surprise. “You work for the company?” He looks like he feels guilty for not noticing, but you just laugh.

“Yeah, I’m a trainee here in Seoul.” You say, and he peers at you curiously.

“So you’re the girl we’re doing a photo shoot with.” He blushes for a short  moment, looking embarrassed. “I should have noticed earlier, I’m sorry.” He apologizes, but you tell him it’s fine. Then, “If you’re going to Hawaii, can you speak English?” He questions, looking a little mischievous.

“Yeah, I was born in Canada, so I know English well.” You say this in English, and his lips pull into the most beautiful grin you’ve ever seen. It makes you double take, and you feel the red creeping onto your cheeks.

“Mind studying with me, then?” He asks, pulling out a Hangul-to-English dictionary. “I’m no best at it soon.” He stammers, and you chuckle at his attempt.

“Sure, sure,” You agree, leaning halfway to take the book. “But, no help.” You say, tucking it behind your butt, and he pouts. “We learn through speech, or else you’ll never get good at it.” You tell him in English, and he nods readily.

“Now, tell me every English line you know. Just to get me an idea of where you are.” You tell him in Korean, so it’s easier for him to understand.

“You’re beautiful.” He says immediately, and you nod.

“I am, keep going.” He drops his jaw and blushes, trying to explain that he was just doing what you asked him to, so you just laugh it off. “I know, I know, just keep going.”

“Um…” He mutters, wracking his head for something else. “Call me baby.” He mumbles, and you can’t help but laugh. Seeing your reaction, he keeps listing things off. “Love me right, you can call me monster, shawty I’m-a party ‘till the sun down.” By the time he’s done, you’re bent over your lap in a fit of giggles.

Sehun, unable to see you in this state without being affected, starts giggling with you.

“Yah, if you two can’t shut up, I’ll throttle–” Junmyeon, you recognize him, leans over the seat in front of you, but stops mid-sentence when he sees you. “Oh– _____, from JEWELS, right?” He asks apologetically.

“Yeah.” You tell him, amazed that he recognized you. “Ah, Suho, from EXO, right?” You say back playfully, and he chuckles at your banter.

“Yes, I’m surprised you know know me.” He says sarcastically. “You’re… doing the photo shoot with us, yeah?” You nod, and he suddenly turns bashful. The stern leader from before completely melted away. “We’re honored to work with such a talented dongsaeng.” He confesses to you, and you find yourself blushing timidly.

“No, no, I’M honored.” Sehun makes a tired noise, shooing Junmyeon away, and he takes the hint. Junmyeon smiles at you one last time before moving back in his seat.

“Pay attention to me.” Sehun tells you, reaching over you to get his book back. “You can meet the rest of them all you want when we land. While we’re in the air, though? You’re mine.” He says possessively, but it’s cute, and you don’t know what to do but nod.

How about a promise. Any filmmaker out there who wants to produce and share a piece treating Kilauea as a work of art can be guaranteed they will get a share from me and at 6+ minutes of my time. This one is from native Hawaiian Lance Page. The description posted to go with the video reads:

The Fire Within is a visceral, artistic study on the Big Island of Hawaii’s hyperactive Kilauea volcano. I was born and raised on the island and all my life up until last year I hadn’t had the chance to come face to face with her incredible presence.
Many in Hawaii refer to the lava as ‘Pele’, the Hawaiian goddess of fire. After our incredible experiences at the volcano it’s not hard to see why so many islanders to this day see her as a living breathing thing. I wanted to capture her beauty and mysteriousness as well as her unimaginable power in the best way that I knew how. I wanted to just see it doing what it does. I shied away from any human interaction and turned the cameras to the fiery blood of the Earth.
This six and a half minute film is my best attempt at capturing what it felt like to witness molten rock slowly burning down a dense wet rainforest or to peer into a six-hundred-foot-wide lava lake at Kilauea’s summit crater. I’ve never been anywhere else on the planet that demanded as much respect and awareness for the natural environment around me. Her unexpected beauty and unsettling sense of danger were nothing short of humbling and put so much into perspective. Kilauea really did change my life.
Huge thanks to those who supported this film along the way, especially Wes and Stefan for contributing so much time and talent to make this thing what it is. Kilauea - The Fire Within was produced out of pocket and with complete creative freedom.

anonymous asked:

Do you know if the shoe company OluKai is indigenous run?

No, it is not. I went to their website to check it out, and at first really thought it was Kanaka Maoli owned, because they use indigenous languages to name all their products, and feature the stories of Native Hawaiian people very prominently in their “About” section. But in chatting with an employee to confirm, this is what happened:

Amery: Aloha! How can we assist you?

Me: Hi! Is OluKai owned by Native Hawaiian people? I run an indigenous fashion blog and we would love to feature your business (and I always love supporting fellow indigenous artists!). It looks Hawaiian owned but I wanted to confirm?

Amery: Thank you for your interest in OluKai! Our co-founder was born and raised in Hawaii, however I do not believe we are Hawaiian owned.

Me: So you are not Kanaka Maoli owned, and don’t employ any Kanaka Maoli designers?

Amery: We have a number of native Hawaiians working with our company, but we are not Kanaka Maoli owned and our design team is made up of a diverse group.

Me: How would you respond to questions of cultural appropriation then? Because all of your designs use Polynesian words, and your website “About” section prominently features solely Native Hawaiians. Why use Native Hawaiian language and people to sell your product, when you are not a Native Hawaiian company and don’t support Native Hawaiian designers?

Amery: Our co-founder is from Hawaii, born and raised on Oahu. He shares your same passion and pride for his homeland.  Our Co-Founder is also the Creative Director, and he gets most of his design inspiration from the place he loves.  You will see that a majority of our giveback efforts are focused there as well (http://www.olukai.com/community/giveback/).

Me: Okay but it’s really NOT his homeland…is it? Just because he was born there doesn’t mean he isn’t a settler that benefits from ongoing colonial occupation of the sovereign Hawaiian Nation. As a Native American woman, I would be furious if a non-Native person called my traditional homelands, that my people have lived on for thousands of years, their homeland. And then on top of it, used my ancestral language and the faces of my people to market a product. In fact, that is illegal, in violation of the American Indian Arts & Crafts Act–you could be subject to massive fines and shutdown if you market your products as Native when they are not. I have many Kanaka Maoli friends and colleagues who share my feelings on this matter: our land and culture is all we have. It’s not for sale. And marketing your brand as Hawaiian using Hawaiian language and people is WRONG when you are not Kanaka Maoli. It’s offensive, insensitive, cheap & lazy, and potentially illegal. You may want to take that information to your Creative Director/co-founder.

Amery: Thank you for your feedback. We will be sure to pass it on. Is there anything else we may assist you with today?

Obama runs for President with birth certificate clearly stating his birthplace of Hawaii: “The U.S. President must be a natural born citizen of the U.S.!!!  How do we know he wasn’t actually born in Kenya.  His father’s Kenyan?  He could be a Kenyan!!  or a Muslim!! Kenyan!!!”

Ted Cruz runs for President with birth certificate clearly stating his birthplace of CANADA:  “Well…what does ‘natural birth’ actually mean?  Besides, he renounced his Canadian citizenship.  He’s a proud American.”

O Christmas Tree - Vince Guaraldi Trio

My Masterlist

“Momma, where does this ornament go?” Madeline Hale asked her mother as she fumbled with a red glass ornament. (Y/N) looked up to observe the ornament.

“That one can go on the bottom,” She smiled, pointing to an area on the bottom left of the tree that had gone untouched.

“Okay momma!” The girl chirped. Madeline had only been alive half a decade, born as a result of Derek and (Y/N)’s honeymoon getaway to Hawaii, and she resembled her parents in every way. She was almost a carbon copy of how Derek’s sisters looked when they were her age, only with her mother’s nose and smile. She was tough as nails like her father but always willing to help like her mother. In her father’s eyes, she was nothing less than absolute perfection.

“Derek? You okay?” (Y/N) yelled out to her husband, whom she had sent to the basement to bring up the last box of silver ornaments.

“Almost there!” He yelled back, the ornaments clinking together with his every move as he went up each step.

“Next year, is the baby gonna help us dress up the tree?” Madeline asked innocently, and (Y/N) let out a chuckle, placing a hand on her tiny baby bump.

“I guess so, M,” (Y/N) replied, and Madeline smiled, satisfied with the answer.
Madeline gasped in realization and in happiness. “Are we gonna put the star up?” She asked excitedly. The star, for reasons (Y/N) didn’t quite know, was Madeline’s favorite addition to the tree decorations.

(Y/N) nodded in delight. “Yep! In fact, Daddy should be bringing it up now..”  Madeline jumped up and down with excitement.

“Yay!” She exclaimed. “Daddy, hurry up! I wanna put the star on top!”

“I’m coming, I’m coming,” He responded, moving comically into the living room with the box of decorations. After setting the box down next to the multiple other boxes, Derek stood with his hands on his hips as he watched his two favorite ladies do their thing.

“Remember, Maddie, the star goes on last.” (Y/N) pointed out, hanging the smaller ornaments at the top where her daughter couldn’t reach.

“Okay, okay!” She rushed, running to the box and grabbing whatever ornament her hand fell on. “Daddyyy, will you help us? I wanna put the star up!” Madeline begged, pulling on Derek’s dark jeans.

Derek chuckled. “Of course, pumpkin.”

(Y/N) smiled to herself. Derek letting his soft side out was a miracle that only occurred when with his wife and daughter.

“You know, mommy, you should go take a rest.” Derek suggested blatantly yet rather cheerfully, gesturing towards his wife’s baby bump, also known as his soon-to-be second child.

“I’m okay. This isn’t exactly tough physical labor, Der,” (Y/N) replied, and Derek rolled his eyes.

“Really, take a break, I can handle putting hooks on a tree.” He retorted, holding up his hand that held a small shiny green ornament so his daughter could run underneath to put more ornaments on the tree.

“No way. I’ll start taking breaks when the baby wants me to take breaks.” (Y/N) compromised, causing her husband chuckle at her response.

“Fair enough.” He stated, pressing a kiss to (Y/N)’s cheek and turning around to place the green ornament.

Soon, with the whole Hale family working hard, all the ornaments were hanging, even the silver wolf-shaped ornament Stiles had gotten as a gag gift. (Y/N) wiped her hands on her sweater and smiled in accomplishment.

“Can I do the star now, momma?” Madeline asked, her eyes big as she looked up to her mother. (Y/N) smiled warmly.

“Of course, M,” She replied, and in response the Madeline cheered.
“Daddy, can you get the star out?”

Derek rummaged through the various decorations, pulling out the sparkly silver star only slightly larger than the size of his hand. “Here you go, princess."

Madeline took the star gratefully and admired it for several moments before looking back up at her father once more. "Can you lift me up so I can put it on the tree?”

Instead of responding verbally, Derek lifted his little girl up from the waist and hovered her right in front of the tree’s top. Giggling like mad, Madeline used both her small arms so secure the star’s base onto the tip.

“Good job, Maddie!” Derek praised as he lifted her down to place fatherly kisses all over her face as she squealed in delight.

“Daddy! It tickles!” She exclaimed, her laughs the sweetest noise her father had ever heard. Derek gently sat her back on the ground, her fuzzy sock-covered feet landing on the hardwood floor with a soft thud. Derek then wrapped an arm around his wife while Madeline ran to grab a juice box.

“I love you, and our family.” He whispered, placing his other hand on the growing baby bump, and (Y/N) grinned softly.

“I love you and our family, too.” She replied, and kissed her husband sweetly.

SCANDAL; GiGS April 2016 Issue - “YELLOW” Song Commentaries

In this portion, SCANDAL speaks about each and every song. (As most of this stuff has been translated and mentioned before on my blog, I’ll just pick 3 songs that were lesser talked about to translate ^^)

―― Sunday Drive

TOMOMI: “I guess after I got my driver’s license, I’ve come to want to write a song about cars, so at the end of year 2014, this song came to be. The initial temporary title had a car maker’s name in it, with me imagining going on a drive with my friends along the sea in that car (laughs). We also slowly talked about wanting to do a motown beat for the rhythm, and we kicked off by writing the lyrics first. Holding onto those lyrics, all the members got into the studio, and with a motown beat sounding, we presented it in this way.”

RINA: “I’ll tap the motown beat as TOMOMI adds on the bass line; The rhythm team was going about it endlessly. Everyone had their lyrics on the music stands, the melody came floating up as we performed and we tried singing along to that.”

MAMI: “As everyone worked on the melody, we also progressed on the chords and decided largely upon it; Like, it should be longer here, shorter there etc. In about 2 ~ 3 hours, the song became pretty solid.”

HARUNA: “All kinds of things were expanded as we were having fun. In that 1 day in the studio, we solidified many songs.”

TOMOMI: “This was done during the same period as ‘Sunday Drive’, but it somehow couldn’t quite come together, which attributed to my personal slump as well (laughs bitterly). I spoke with the members, and I was told that we’ll be able to meet all kinds of people over the world tour, allowing me to see different sceneries from all over the world, so perhaps after returning to our country, the way I face the song might also change. Since I was influenced by many things from overseas, I once again re-presented it. It was an oldies rock song at the beginning, but because we were challenging all sorts of rhythm in ‘YELLOW’, I wanted to try some raggae and that became it. I asked for the arranging person to have raggae right smack in the middle (laughs). But for our presentation, we wanted it to be just a little more Rocksteady, so we arranged it altogether.”

MAMI: “Since I knew that she’s be listening to raggae regularly since the past, I thought it was a really Tomo-like tune. The guitars was included tastefully, and it came to my realisation that it should go down the tasteful route (laughs). I received feedback on my playing that our stance was Rocksteady despite it coming from a rock band, and I just thought it’s good that what they mean is that it isn’t really like us.”

RINA: “I think that’s the goodness of the album. Since it’s coming from us, we included songs that we challenged, conveying the us from this year and how we are now to everyone.”

HARUNA: “I thought that it was extremely interesting for me to sing this Rocksteady tune, which is a love song that’s seen everyday and easy to be understood. Hearing a Rocksteady song, it’s a song that we’ve challenged.”

―― Happy Birthday

MAMI: “We thought about making a song that has the same rhythm throughout. We spoke about how good it’ll be to have a birthday song, so with some back and forth with RINA, this one was done in a pretty short amount of time.”

RINA: “To be born and to hold life, everyone would have a day of birth. It’s a number that’s definitely yours for once in a year. In midst of the completion for the lyrics, I showed it so many times to the members and wrote it by using everyone’s opinions as well. Right up to the end of the recording, all kinds of ideas were popping up, and all of it was included inside. The ukelele was played by TOMOMI.

TOMOMI: “Although the playing’s at a level that I won’t talk about (laughs). During my birthday the year before the last, we were just right at Hawaii, and the staff gave me a ukelele as a present. So that made its appearance. For the live, I’ll hold onto the bass as it is, but it’ll be nice to play the ukelele at the ending too (laughs).”

HARUNA: “Just imagining it is interesting (laughs). This song has a feel that’s more towards participating in a slightly more adult-like party.”

―― Bonus: Your Song -English ver.-

RINA: “This was originally the coupling song to one of our singles, and it’s amazingly popular even at overseas.”

MAMI: “We further felt the reality of that as we went about on the world tour, so we thought it’ll be nice to sing this in English.”

TOMOMI: “In the first place, it’s a song that we presented after going back and forth over our overseas fans’ (comments) via the music programme, 'J-MELO’. That’s why, I think it’s perfect that we had the idea to do an English version.”

HARUNA: “The recording was also very fun. The English also came about nicely, it seems. It was also a song that was made with awareness to the Western music sound anyway. Although I think for lives in Japan, we’ll sing it in Japanese (laughs).”
