squee on the head/heart scene
In response to this gifset, @bellsqueen said “The first set from season 1 is Clarke telling Bellamy that she knows he’s a good person, so act like it. Then the second one from s4 also mentions that everything stupid he did was for Octavia but the context and the delivery is so much more romantic. And I can’t get over how Clarke is like, telling Bellamy how big his heart is and it’s clear that she loves that about him and I have to lay down ok.”
And I’m over here flailing because YES, BABE, YES. THAT’S WONDERFUL. It’s interesting that they keep returning to that too, from s1 to now. They put a lot of effort this season into callbacks, and when they went for this call back, they picked this particular aspect of Bellamy to say, this is what Clarke admires about him. She sees that he loves others, gets his strength from loving others, and that’s what defines him in her eyes. Even when she warns him that it’s not always enough, that he needs to be logical too, she still touches his chest reverentially while her gaze goes soft.
I think one could point to a subtle difference too, that Bellamy sees this quality in himself as being defining as well. But when he reflects on his actions, he thinks he’s driven by responsibility and by being a protector. Clarke looks at that same quality and sees him as being driven by love, by his heart. As much as I chafe sometimes about how we the fandom lean too much into this head/heart analogy about Bellarke, and make it cover TOO much of their character… I do think it’s kind of lovely when you look at it as a meta-expression of how they see each other in terms of love. Not as a simplified explanation of what they’re talented at, but it being what they admire in each other.
If “I got you for that” is Bellamy saying he admires the opposite in Clarke, even leans on it… I think he sees her ‘head’ decisions as not intellect but wisdom. And I need to watch the finale again but I’m gonna make a light connection there with what he tells Octavia about Prometheus: stealing fire (invention, thought, wisdom) from the gods. He used that metaphor for Octavia, when there were honestly more fitting myths he could have used. But THAT is what they had Bellamy mention this episode. That’s telling us as much about Bellamy’s perspective as his sister’s, and introducing that subtextual imagery of Prometheus into the episode. And as Praimfaya descends, who is the lone human that climbs into the sky, sends a message, and suffers physical torment so that others can live and prosper? …Clarke fucking Griffin. So yeah… If using one’s head means freedom and success to Bellamy–if that’s the ultimate service one can do for one’s community–then that ties really neatly into why he’s put so much faith in Clarke’s capacity for judgment over the last 4 seasons.
He believes, in most situations, that she sees clearly and tries to make the best call. Even when the cost is high. He trusts her to do that in times when he trusts no one else (s2 finale, s3 finale, 403). And Clarke has lived up to that, sacrificing herself over and over again, unfailingly chasing the best way to save others, to do the right thing. Clarke, meanwhile, trusts that whenever Bellamy acts, his intentions are driven by his heart. She sees into his core and she knows his strength draws from a source of love and hope. His motives are clear as crystal to her. She gets him. They both carry these shining torches of faith for each other, a faith that is so monumental it’s driven the story season after season. Up through the end of the world. And when one of them stumbles, fails, doesn’t live up to their best self because of grief, anger, arrogance, or heartache… that faith never wavers. The other reaches out for them and folds them into their arms and still cares, still believes. Clarke and Bellamy negotiate each other back from the edge, because they each believe so powerfully in the other person’s inherent goodness. And they see each other as working toward goodness in a way that they, respectively, admire and aspire to.
This is why I’m like… so fucking nuts over bellarke as an evolving relationship, and why my expectations for them are so high, no matter how long it takes.
It’s a love story where the thing they most admire about each other, is the fact that the person tries so hard to do the right thing for others. That’s a hell of a thing to love someone for.
