wannabanauthor  asked:

Hi there! I love your blog! I've seen you mention a few TV shows and movies for research, and I was wondering what your opinion is on the show Leverage and it's accuracy for social engineering in potentially violent situations. I remember one character saying that "Thieves look for entrances, but grifters create them." They'll often use approaches like this to avoid violence.

If the question is: can you use social engineering in order to defuse or avoid violent situations? The answer is yes.

Grifters are conmen, and like spies, they don’t want to fight unless it is absolutely necessary. Whether they can fight or know how isn’t really the point: combat makes messes, big messes, and draws the kind of attention they don’t want/can’t afford.

As for the line, “thieves look for entrances, but grifters create them” the point of it is that grifters focus on people as the exploitative aspect to get what they want. After all, it doesn’t matter how good your security system is if your infiltrator is expected to be there. When someone opens the door for them, they didn’t have to break in.

It is worth pointing out though, being able to stop, defuse, avoid, or redirect violence via social engineering (especially when the character is the target) is very difficult and requires someone who excels at rapidly changing their story/manipulating under life or death pressure while also maintaining their consistency/re-establishing their innocence/regaining their target’s trust.

That’s masterclass social engineering. The average person, even the average grifter can’t do it. When we see Nate Ford, Sophie Devereaux, or Michael Westen on Burn Notice socially engineer their way out of potentially explosive and violent scenarios, we’re supposed to understand this level of manipulation is very difficult. You need a solid ability to read people, predict their behavior patterns, understand how to shift your role so you suddenly seem trustworthy, confuse them, and then redirect their anger somewhere away from you.

You can see another variant of this kind of social engineering on display in The Negotiator. Samuel L. Jackson’s character is a hostage negotiator. Deliberately maneuvering a man who’s taken a child captive around his apartment so he can be taken out. You can see him joking with the target, gaining his trust, distracting him, and guiding him off topic until he’s in a position to be neutralized.

The Grifter is not a fighter, they are a talker and their trick is getting people to move however they want. A skilled grifter can slip in, turn the best of friends against each other, and walk away without a care. Grifters don’t punch. They trick other people into doing the punching for them. When sitting down to write a Grifter, remember: their first instinct is getting others to act in their place, to create the openings they need, and be their fall guy.

On the whole, I’ve liked Leverage ever since the episode where Eliot pointed out that guns are ranged weapons, and the most common mistake people make is giving up the distance advantage by getting in too close. However, I’ve only watched the first season. I liked what I saw, it’s an enjoyable caper show in a similar vein to The Equalizer, Person of Interest, or Ocean’s Eleven. Not quite in there with the original Law & Order when it comes to accuracy (in this case for cops) but certainly better than White Collar, which uses similar techniques (though never, ever pay attention to White Collar’s usage of the FBI… ever). The X-Files, meanwhile, fudges a bit but it’s pretty good when you’re wanting to get a grasp of the FBI’s culture and what happens to someone who doesn’t come from a military/law enforcement background.

Of course, the patient zero for these types of shows is the original Mission: Impossible. The television show, not the Tom Cruise movies. Mission: Impossible is all about flipping people and manipulating them into positions to do what you want. The A-Team is its slightly more pulpy counterpart, but its a similar (though far less subtle) deal.

On the whole, Leverage tends to explain itself better, which is helpful when you’re trying to learn or take techniques from a television show rather than just absorb.

The reason why I often suggest Burn Notice and Spy Game is not necessarily just because they’re good, but also because they teach. The narrator on Burn Notice, especially in the first season will offer up a lot of helpful/beginner tradecraft for a variety of situations. This, ultimately, will help you more for taking pieces and creating your own characters than a show that’s trying for smoke and mirrors like White Collar. The same situation is there with Spy Game, where Robert Redford’s character is teaching Brad Pitt’s on how to be a spy. Ultimately, more helpful in the long run than just watching The Recruit. The Michael Mann films like Heat and Collateral are exceptionally good for learning tradecraft, but you have to know that’s what you’re watching/looking for. You’ll learn more by watching them together, rather than separately. The Borne Identity novels are also very good at showing the tradecraft, while the Le Carre ones tend to be a little more hit and miss.

When you’re new, you want sources that are free with their information. Who are good at getting you to think, to take what you’re seeing and apply it to new settings. You may not ever figure out how to build a car bomb, but learning about how the thought process of a spy, criminal, or conman works will serve you better for your writing than a hundred other movies that only show.

After you’ve drawn back the curtain then you can turn to those other shows, novels, and narratives with new eyes. Once you see what they’re doing, how they’re doing it, and why when they don’t explain you’ll get more out of those other sources than you did before.

When you’re watching a well put together show like Leverage, start questioning character motivations. Not just whether the social engineering there works, but why the characters are choosing to go that route or which routes they prefer. Leverage gives you five characters with different specialties, four thieves and the guy who made a career catching them. They all think in different ways and have different approaches when it comes to problem solving. Leverage offers up a heist per episode, so you have lots of opportunities to see the characters in action. Evaluate their problem solving methods and you’ll come away with more than just questioning whether or not it works.

How and Why.

Then, go find a good video on YouTube where a professional magician explains pickpocketing. It’s the art of misdirection.

Once you understand basic theoretical underpinnings (whether or not you could ever actually pull the real thing off) then you can apply it to many different situations in a fictional context.

When it comes back to applying this to the combat arts, learning to see the big picture is the first major difference between trained and untrained. The untrained only copy surface level, singular techniques, while trained delves deeper to understand how these techniques work together.

My advice for when you’re wanting to pick and choose television shows for accuracy is to check who their consultants are/were, and what experts in the show’s chosen field say about it. That doesn’t always guarantee accuracy, but it will help you flip through the rave reviews.

If you want to watch more fun shows with Timothy Hutton or just like detective shows, I recommend Nero Wolfe.

Derek has muscles, like everywhere, which he has a tendency to display in skin-tight, sleeveless t-shirts for bands Stiles has never heard of; his jeans are always tight and ripped too, and he has an impressive five-o’clock shadow, the tips of his jet-black hair dyed purple. And his eyes. Stiles is pretty sure he’s only seen eyes like that in comics, or on a movie screen, or in his freakin dreams. They’re somehow simultaneously all of the colors and none of them, transcending something so pedestrian and insignificant as words to encapsulate their beauty. Stiles would come to learn that he’s also wickedly smart, and he plays the guitar and speaks multiple languages, and his sunshine smile is even more alarming that his resting murder face.

He knew he’d fall head over heels in love with the wolf and he did. And he didn’t know if he could handle Derek not feeling the same way. So instead he agreed with Derek to remove chocolate, and add in the jelly of sarcasm and ribbing banter and jerking off alone.

Reaching over to grab a handful of chips out of Betty’s lunch box, Jughead threw his arm over her shoulder, effectively dragging her even tighter against his side.

Kevin elbowed Veronica in the ribs, causing her to turn and raise an eyebrow in annoyance, dramatically throwing his eyes over to the pair he made some sort of quiet noise along the lines of “mmmhmm”

Veronica’s eyes widened at The sight in front of her, Betty leaning into Jughead while his arm was wrapped lazily around her. To anyone else in the world you would think these two were a couple, the level of comfort and intimacy They shared was unbelievable, they didn’t even seem to realize the closeness continuing with their conversations as if nothing was out of the ordinary.

“Strike two.” Kevin whispered into Veronica’s ear with a wicked smile. She returned it and quickly sent a text to the redhead sitting across from her.

VERONICA: Cheryl, you seeing this?

Cheryl’s eyes turned up from the text on her phone, casting a glance to Betty and jughead

CHERYL: this is totes nothing compared to the walk to physics class.

Veronica laughed out loud remembering the hilarious scene she had watched take place.

Betty and jughead couldn’t seem to stop tripping over each other, every time Betty would move right Jughead was right on her heels, stepping on the backs of her flats, if jughead moved to head the opposite way Betty just so happened to be going the other direction causing at least three collisions in the middle of the halls.

She was silently laughing so hard at the memory tears were streaming down her face.

“You okay Ronnie?” Archie said eyeing her watery eyes and reaching a hand out to wipe a stray tear.

“You’re crying!” Betty jumped up knocking jugheads arm right in his face , causing her to break into another fit of uncontrollable giggles.

“I’m fine, I’m fine. I’m just having….spacial issues.” At this she set off Cheryl and Kevin, they were now laughing equally as hard she was.

“Did I miss the joke?” Jughead said confused

Betty raised an eyebrow as the lunch bell went off “apparently I missed it too.”

Everyone stood to head back inside, feeling slightly high from there five minute long laugh fest

“You guys are so weird.” Betty huffed as she grabbed her bag.

Jughead just shook his head, nudging Betty over so he could walk beside her.

As the group walked to their final class of the day, one of the mathletes accidentally shoved Betty into jugheads arms

“Watch where you’re going! I’m sure solving derivatives can wait.” He snarled towards the tiny freshman.“you okay?” he asked, his arms still comfortably holding her from behind

She nodded, resting her head against his chest.

Veronica stared at the pair, looking around at her swooning friends, she had to get to the bottom of this.

“Okay what’s up with you two, it’s like you can’t be apart for more than three minutes and it’s like gravity keeps pushing you two into each other.” She said sassily

Jughead dropped his arms from her waist and Betty stepped away blushing.

“What are you talking about Ronnie?”

“Oh come on guys, everyone can see it except you two, you’re like destined to be close.” Cheryl answered giddily, she loved a good romance.

“Totally agree, like Romeo and Juliet.” Kevin nodded.

Archie laughed “its totally true, I haven’t seen one of you without the other in weeks.”

Jughead was smiling down at Betty now and she looked up at him with a curious smile

“Whaddaya say bets? We can’t let the universe down can we?” He smirked holding his arm out for her to take.

She laughed loudly, sliding her arm into his.

“You’re so right juggie, physics and all that.” Smiling and holding each other close the couple made their way down the hallway, leaving their friends to stare in shock

The silence was broken when Archie mutter d happily

“I ship it.”

That buzzing sound in your ear

Okay, so…after a night of thinking and seeing reactions/comments/etc., I’ve gained a bit of perspective on all of this. Also note that this post is more about the fandom behavior and not so much about the issues of representation, because I don’t think I really have a valid opinion in that discussion.

Also this is the last time I’ll talk about this. I won’t answer asks and I won’t bring it up again because I don’t want this space to become centered on it.

1. When stuff like this goes down, I should just turn my computer off and play video games for a while because spontaneous reaction is never ever good. I got angry last night and it was dumb and I feel dumb for it. I love this damn show so much and I won’t let something as small as this ruin it for me

2. Do not, under any circumstances, attack Arryn for this. She is a voice actress with no creative input in the series at all. She was looking out for the fans and trying to do a good thing. She’s already timid enough about social media (and rightfully so) don’t scare off someone who openly stated that she was the captain of the ship and supports it whole heartedly.

3. Stop expecting Rooster Teeth to spoil their most popular show with some kind of statement about the song or the direction they’re going with Blake and Yang. They’re not going to because that would be stupid. If Bumbleby is meant to bee then giving that away in a journal on the RT site would be criminal. Not to mention that we’ve gotten so much more in canon already than just this random song.

4. I understand the caution, but people really need to calm down. It’d be one thing if we saw Sun and Blake kissing or Yang and Blake openly saying “we’re not in love with each other!” in an episode - but we didn’t. This is a song that was put on the soundtrack, that definitely shouldn’t have been, and the bees fans ran with it. I’m not faulting them at all, I was one of them and I jumped right on board the hype train. But even if it’s not directly meant to be about the ship - I highly doubt it was put on the soundtrack with any sort of malice intent.

5. Which leads me to the next point. Stop pretending that Rooster Teeth is rubbing their hands together and laughing like they’re doing this just to spite people. Could they handle some things better? Absolutely, and they’d be the first ones to tell you that - but they’re not mean spirited people. They’re not trying to upset their fans and this notion that they “don’t care” about their fans is ridiculous.

6. Patience, please just have some patience. Stop living and dying on every small thing that comes across your dashboard. This show has such a long run left in it and to this point romance has been so so small on that spectrum. Volume 5 is not going to suddenly become a big love story. Even if the bees are going to happen it’ll be subtle as hell and probably take a long time. So one song and one response to a song should not suddenly shut you down from wanting to watch the show at all. There’s so much more to RWBY than this.

7. While this does have the potential to be very bad, it isn’t yet - it’s not even close. I’m just asking that you give them a chance to tell their story without constantly looking for a reason to jump down their throats - all that does is make them leery of you. Writers have the right to tell their story and that’s the whole point. We’re here to watch the stories, not dictate them. If they do queerbait (which I personally don’t think they have, I think that can only happen at the very end of a show or if one of the two characters is killed with no resolution), then they will be in the wrong and they will be met with an even larger version of what happened last night. For now though, just let them make the show and quit hunting for reasons to make them the enemy.

8. Lastly, please don’t stop shipping bumbleby. Don’t stop talking about how much you love them. Don’t stop making arts and fics and long posts about why you love them. This whole thing wouldn’t be a thing at all if the fans hadn’t seen what they saw in these two and turned it into the biggest ship in the fandom that it’s become.

anonymous asked:

Hey R-kun!! Just wanna say I've been stalking your blog these past few days because they're absolutely fantastic. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ Gotta love your ideas, man :) Can I ask, what are your favorite chapters in re:?

Hey, thanks anon! For a brief selection, in chronological order:

31.5 - The Christmas chapter. Perfect wind-down chapter after a very intense arc which also, I think, cemented the most strongly just what a happy life Haise led at the CCG. It’s very difficult to read that chapter and not think “God, I wish I was in that room”. Because it demonstrated that so expertly, it made Haise’s struggles with his past life in the second half of the chapter all the more impactful - excited as we are to see Kaneki’s mask again, there’s an underlying sense of unease that it’s going to sink its tragic teeth into the harmonious life that not just Kaneki, but we the readers, have just enjoyed (something also indicated by the leather eyepatch Haise gives to Mutsuki). As indeed it does. As befits a Christmas chapter, it is primarily about bonds - bonds that are going to come under severe strain by the end of the next arc, which is why they’re painted with such a fine brush here to smoothly transition between the two - Kaneki and the Quinx, Kaneki and Arima, and the memories of his old bonds through his mask and through :re. A real Christmas present of a chapter!

53,56,57,58 - The death of Haise and the birth of the Black Reaper. :re was Kaneki’s attempt to escape his tragedy, but it followed him even into the realm of a different story, and here, returning along with his memories, it finally re-establishes control. The world of happy illusion is shattered after Kaneki is pushed to the edge by Eto (his doppelganger who reminds him of his true self and heralds Haise’s death) who forces the fruit of Knowledge down his throat to bring him back to the path she needs him on. The darkness of the old world had been slowly creeping into the story for a while now, catalysed by the reappearance of old characters and shards of Kaneki’s memories returning, but this was the spark that led to the inferno and the genre shift becomes gut-punchingly obvious with Kaneki’s new appearance and attitude together with the death of Shirazu. The chapter is all the more impactful because for ages the audience had wanted Kaneki’s memories to return, but now they’re back, we remember why he wiped them in the first place. The Kaneki who returns is not the one we all know and love; it is the broken shell of a man who has accepted his fate to die at the hands of his genre, and who has cast aside any pretences he once had to morality or selflessness. This style of transformation was so far from what was expected, and yet it makes all too much sense. The Kaneki we once knew, as we slowly discover, is still underneath all the burning hatred and cold defeatism, which only makes our pity for this wretched creature all the stronger. Haise Sasaki’s existential dilemma becomes one of the most heartwrenchingly tragic arcs of the whole manga, especially since the reader feels party to it as we ourselves wanted Kaneki back without properly acknowledging what it would mean for everything that had made Haise ‘Haise’. The contrast between the two fiercely drives that realisation home. But of course, at the same time, who didn’t love “Shut the hell up?” Or how Kaneki managed to wreck the fearsome One-Eyed Owl? Much as this was a negative development for Kaneki (albeit a necessary one), it’s difficult not to respect how he took his life back into his own hands after taking so much shit and playing puppet for so long. As my blog background and title already indicate, I love this mini-arc with all my soul, and I haven’t even talked about throwing Tsukiyama off the building, the beginning of Kaneki and Eto’s enthralling dynamic, and “I suppose this is my fault?”. Ah! Shivers.

120 – The first glimmer of hope for the CCG to accept the existence of Ghouls and to break the endless turning of the wheels of revenge. We’ve already seen ways that Ghouls and Humans can live in peace through Nishiki and Kimi, Kuzen and Ukina, etc. but what about the CCG, who have spent their whole lives hunting Ghouls? 120 shows reconciliation is possible through Akira, whose hatred of Ghouls runs deep, forgiving not just Ghoulkind, but the specific Ghouls who took her father from her. The chapter carries a powerful, reflective ambience throughout, aided by many quiet moments interspersed with poignant conversation as well as excellent emotive facial and background art from Ishida. As well as shining a lot of light on Akira’s current mental state, we see much more of how Touka has been confronting her issues in all the time we haven’t seen her, and watching her now as a calm and wise mentor figure highlights her incredible development from her brash and reckless teenage years as well as the influence of old man Yoshimura. An acceptingly melancholic but quietly hopeful chapter that portrays fascinating psychological developments in its three focal female characters – Akira, Touka and Hinami – and explores touchingly their complex relationships with the past and the dead, and what it means to move beyond that.

122 – We all knew this chapter was going to be amazing after 121’s cliffhanger. Kaneki and Touka finally open up, and it turns out great. Comparing this to the confrontation in the original series’ 120, it’s a wonderful piece of evidence for :re following the same path as the original series but going right where they once went wrong. Incredibly satisfying to finally hear the feelings spoken aloud that we all knew were there, and Kaneki’s “Will you come with me?” led to the greatest breath of relief I’ve had throughout the series.

125 – Surprise surprise. I’ve already spoken ad infinitum about this chapter, so in short, it’s an incredibly ambient, symbolic and beautiful experience that results in the emotional salvation of the series’ two lead characters. Their catharsis is our own, and we go away from it feeling as though a great weight has been lifted. It’s due to Ishida’s master craftsmanship with the art, lighting and mood of this chapter that it can connect so deeply with the heart of the reader.

Honourable mentions to 117 and 119, for the Touka-Amon and Kaneki-Amon conversations, and like, all of the Cochlea Arc, but that would be cheating.

Hello there! I've come with a follow - because this blog is really great - and a question. I want to write a character with ADHD, do you have any advice on how to properly go about that?

Be mindful. ADHD is a real thing—real people are affected by it. Thus, be careful on how you portray your character. Don’t use it to make a character “different.” Don’t ignore facts because they “don’t fit” your character. Don’t give in the stereotypes seen in popular media and dramatize those.

ADHD should not be the defining factor of your character. I suggest to build your character without the label “they have ADHD.” Get their background thought out (at least the general story of it). Give them relationships—what do they think of their parents? Are they romantically involved? Do they make friends easily? Give them an education; give them interests and hobbies and skills; give them a personality with quirks and faults. After that, research on ADHD and look at how ADHD can affect your already developed character. If there are some facts about ADHD that might go against your character’s traits, understand why and think of how to handle them. Don’t ignore these conflicts. Yes, ADHD affects people differently, so it’s possible some symptoms or traits won’t be apparent in your character, but never ignore these facts. Address them. Understand why these symptoms aren’t there.

So in movies I've seen sword clashes where they will just try and use brute force to take out the other person until one succeeds or backs out. Is there a reliable other way to get out of that clash or is that actually how it happens?

So, Matt Easton over on his Scholagladitoria channel talked about how this was stupid in one of his videos, and we linked it in one of our asks, but I can’t find it now. The answer is when you’re looking at sword duels, those movie sword clashes are dumb. They’re an excuse for these protracted monologues which should end before they begin with someone being socked in the jaw.

See, that’s the thing. You can use other parts of your body. You disengage, they come forward, and you hit them with your fist.

Swords aren’t brute force weapons, and it’s actually fairly difficult to lock them together. This situation wouldn’t be occurring if both actors weren’t choosing to participate in this specific way. It doesn’t work like this because one of the key factors in basic hand to hand combat also applies to swords. This is that if you have two people shoving at each other, both applying equal force in an attempt to push the other back, one can simply let go. With no force to push against, the other person becomes unbalanced and they fall.

Strength isn’t the only way to win. In fact, it’s a fairly bad one to bet all your chips on. With movies, these scenes are supposed to be a symbolic expression of strength and combat ability. The winner shows his dominance over the loser. It’s the sort of stupid Alpha dog shit that will get you killed in real life because strength, at least the way most people think of it, means a lot less than it seems to. Combat and defense aren’t built on physical resistance all the time, they’re mutable, and shifting. Sometimes, you just let go and end up in a better position than the one you started in.

Say someone has you by the arm and their pulling you, but you don’t want to go with them. You can resist by planting your feet and drawing back in the opposite direction which is what they expect or you can go with them. By go with them, I mean physically throw yourself at them. They give you a nice hard yank and you use that as a launch pad, use it against them, and hit them so you both topple to the ground.

The logic of combat is conservation of energy. You only have so much to work with and are constantly expending it, so you want to win as fast as possible. Endurance training will expand your pool, martial training gives you more resources to work with, but the pool itself is always finite.

Pushing against another human who is applying equal force to you takes more energy than letting go. You use up that finite pool faster, wear out your muscles with constant tensing. It’s a bad position, one you don’t want to be in. With a sword, when you lose out you get stabbed. Unless you’re specifically of the mindset where you’re chasing death, you want to win.

The Hollywood version of the sword clash is there to give the actors a breather and spout their dialogue, which is the kind of talking you usually can’t get off in a tense fight anyway. You need that air to breathe so the oxygen goes back into your blood, and your attention on keeping the other person from killing you. Witticism is for when things aren’t serious.

Basic transits meaning

Feel free to add + correct something! I’m still learning about this so your help is amazing :)

I’ll cover the houses here. If you want to check your transits, here you have a tutorial by @astrologanize

Sun: focus, where you shine brighter than ever! Where the sun falls, it’ll be your main interest for a certain time. For example, Sun transiting your 11th house will focus on social life, friend groups and your dreams. Sun transiting your 6th house will be focused on routine and getting things done, rather than dreaming and being social.

Moon: this planet’s transits are really short (2 days approximately), so its effect is more like “daily mood” than big and meaningful cycles in your life. These transits show where your emotions are focused on, and where you may be more creative. I highly recommend to check the sign where the transit Moon is in! For example, Cancer moon is transiting in your 2nd house. That’ll mean you’re a lot more attached emotionally to your material goods, and you may buy too many things during this transit. Of course, this feeling only last for like two days so next week you might regret all the useless things you’ve bought…

Mercury: this planet’s transits tend to last one month aproximately. These transits show where your mental focus is, your mental state and what kind of subjects are you up to learn. Plus, it brings a lot of energy to the house’s activities. For example, Mercury transiting the 3rd house will be a lot more witty and will seek more mental stimulation than usual. It may be difficult to stop thinking and you may jump from one thought to the next fearly quickly. This is a good time to focus on mental activities, like school or college.

Venus: this planet’s transits last about one month. This transits tend to show where you feel more confident and social. If it isn’t in a bad aspect with any natal planet, it’ll be a good transit. Depending the house transit Venus is, you may be a lot more creative and artsy. For example, Venus transiting your 5th house will make you more prone to flirting without a clear objective, more like an entertaiment than a real affair. This placement is perfect for creative activities, like drawing.

Mars: this planet’s transits last about one month. This brings a boost of energy to the activities concerned to the transited house, and may indicate what drives you during that time. For example, Mars transiting your 9th house will be eager to learn, and motivation to travel and experience new things.

The following planets have a wider orbit around the sun, therefore, they stay longer in each house. Personally, I think their effects are way more crucial than, for example, the moon’s.

Saturn: this planet’s transits last about one or two years. It is mostly seen as a hard aspect because it shows where one have work to do in order to reach a goal, where we don’t feel enough and it sometimes lead to insecurity and limitations. For example, Saturn transiting in the 10th house can make you feel useless in your career and vulnerable in front of others, and you might feel your work isn’t rewarded. This is a good time to work harder than ever and find holes in your public image and goals.

Jupiter: this planet’s transits last for one year. It shows where you find yourself luckier and happier, and what will help you to expand your life. This is generally seen as a good transit, not matter what kind of aspects it has with your natal planets. For example, Jupiter in the 12th house finds happiness and expansion through relaxing and spiritual ways, like meditation. This is a good time to analyze yourself and let your ego wash away.

Uranus: this planet spends many years in one house and sign. It brings change and mental energy. Change is abrupt and may be caused by a change of mentality or plain boredom. Uranus is here to start new things, to dare and to challenge you. For example, if Uranus is in your 1st house, you may feel you need to change your appearence and your identity may be challenged. This is a good time to change your style and re-create yourself.

Neptune: this planet spends many years in one house and sign. Where it is placed, things get burried. It’s a time where you are more creative, spiritual and confused at the same time. This transit paints a certain part of your life with fantasy. If Neptune is transiting your 6th house, for example, you’ll daydreaming a lot more than you’re used to and procrastination may take over your life if you don’t control it. This is a good time to make art though.

Pluto: this planet spends many years in one house and sign. Transformation is the key word for this transit. Where transit Pluto is placed, things (think about habits, cycles, etc) end in order to start new ones. Also, it can symbolize that your current habits will be transform permanently. Negative feelings may be regular in certain times. Things from the past may do a come back. For example, if Pluto is transiting your 7th house, several of your relationships and friendships may transform in something new, bad or good. Plus, some of your relationships may end and that will mean a new cycle, a “new” you. This is a good time to reevaluate your relationships and throw away the negative ones in your life.

Man why do you still call yourself a liberal? Your politics (esp on the berniesrevolution blog) seen to have gotten more and more explicitly anti capitalist. I've been there, as I'm sure most of today's younger leftists have, but truly allowing yourself to ditch the ideas and platitudes planted into you from years of propaganda, is really liberating. Either way, keep doing you, just something to think about.

When you say “Liberal” context is important. Are we talking economic issues, social issues or the amount of cheese on nachos?

Honestly, I have thought long and hard about changing my username. I have gone back and forth trying to decide what to do. I understand that liberal has come to mean something different to many people in the age of Trump.

But to me, a Liberal is someone who stands for liberty and justice. Someone that believes that strong institutional bonds between people promote peace and prosperity. A liberal stands for a system that provides equality of opportunity and equal protection under the law.

If these are things that you believe in and hold dear, I’d hate to be the one to break it to you but, you are a Liberal too.

You can be a liberal and a leftist. You can advocate for capitalism, socialism, even some versions of communism and still be a liberal. People on the left can hurl Liberal as an insult, much like the right-wing has done before, but:

Hey there, I've been really enjoying reading your blog and have been learning a lot. I'd like to ask about some claims I see being made online about that everyone needs to stop eating meat/animal products imminently to lessen climate change. Is that the full picture? Most articles I see online promote a "plant based" (read: vegan) diet, but is it feasible for everyone to even do that? Would it even help? Thanks :)

This is a very complex question, and a lot has been written on it from different perspectives, but I have to say that it definitely is not the full picture.  To be honest, the question you asked could become an entire paper and/or thesis, but here are some reasons why everyone stopping eating animals immediately is neither feasible nor sustainable for people or the climate.

The fact of the matter is, we have to feed -everyone- with the land and resources we have.  Climate change aside, that is the problem ag seeks to solve. So a solution is not truly sustainable unless it is capable of feeding everyone and is better for the climate than alternatives. Ok? Here we go!

So, does going animal-free work to feed everyone?

  • Many people (myself included) cannot safely exist on a diet devoid of animal products. Whether it be due to celiac, soy allergies, corn allergies, other gut disorders, many people need at least some animal products to survive. I have celiac. I also cannot eat soy more than occasionally without getting very sick and risking permanent health consequences. The majority of the items on the list of foods I cannot eat without getting sick and/or putting my health at risk are plant-derived. I am far from the only one like this.
  • Allergies to plant-derived foods are far more common than to animal-derived ones.  Of the top 8 allergens estimated to cause >90% of allergic reactions by the Mayo Clinic, half of them are plant sources, and of the plant sources listed (peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat) those are common sources of protein for vegetarian/vegan diets. If we cut out animal-based protein, where are people with these allergies going to get protein?
  • Saying “everyone can eat vegan” is ableist, and denies the reality of many people, myself and many of my family members included.

Going totally vegan may actually be bad for some ecosystems

  • Grasslands and rangelands need grazing to survive. These lands evolved under pressure from native herbivores, which in turn were kept in check by predators. Humans have largely eliminated those predators from a good chunk of the world, or severely reduced them (see the issue with deer overpopulation in the US due to human elimination of predators).
  • Even if all the land currently grazed by herbivores was returned to wild populations, we risk herbivore overpopulation issues and long-term environmental degradation. If we just remove all grazing herbivores, we wind up with habitat degradation and in many places, increased fuel for forest fires, which causes its own problems. Removing herbivores also changes ecosystem balance for many other species that rely on herbivores to clear out excess brush, provide manure, or alter habitats.
  • A totally vegan diet for humanity wastes land.  (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/next/earth/going-vegan-isnt-actually-th/) Most grazing land is unsuitable for row crops without massive inputs of fertilizer and tilling/irrigation, which themselves can have a fairly high carbon footprint, and repeated tilling can be very bad for certain kinds of soil. (http://cropwatch.unl.edu/tillage/structure
  • Have you ever seen the rangelands of California or Montana? It would be extremely difficult to grow row crops there, but we are really good at growing cattle and sheep there!  Since grassland is 26% of the world’s land area, and 70% of the world’s agricultural area, any diet that doesn’t use pasture-produced animal products will be wasting a lot of land that could be feeding people. (http://www.fao.org/ag/agp/agpc/doc/grass_stats/grass-stats.htm)
  • As the world population increases, pressure on existing land usage is going to increase, and so agriculture needs to rise to meet this challenge.

So I think we can make the case that a), a vegan diet will not feed everyone, and b) wastes land that could be used to feed people. So by default it’s not sustainable.

But what about livestock and climate change?

  • Livestock production of all types sum up to 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions worldwide (http://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/197623/icode/),and 24% of global greenhouse gases come from agriculture, forestry, and other land use, according to the FAO. That includes plant and animal agriculture. (source: https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/global-greenhouse-gas-emissions-data)
  •  Of this, livestock are a major contributor, but so is soil management, which is needed for growing both human food and feed for livestock.
  • By contrast, electricity/heat, industry, and transport account for 25, 21, and 14% of greenhouse gases, respectively.
  • In the US, livestock account for just 4.2% of total greenhouse gas emissions. To contrast, transportation and energy production account for 27% and 31% of total US greenhouse gas emissions, respectively.
  • The contribution of livestock to greenhouse gases is higher in developing countries, partially due to a lot of livestock eating poorer quality feed or needing longer to reach market, and the fact that grass-fed livestock do produce more methane than livestock fed on lower-fiber feeds.
  • But as discussed above, those grass-eating livestock are necessary for producing food where other crops can’t grow, and keeping ecosystems healthy.
  • So for the US and other developed countries, focusing on livestock seems a bit shortsighted compared to developing cleaner energy and transport, right? (source: http://www.afia.org/rc_files/801/livestocks_contribution_to_climate_change_facts_and_fiction.pdf Disclaimer: the author of this piece is one of my advisors)
  • The US EPA here lists a lot of good ways we can improve agriculture to reduce climate change https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions#land-use-and-forestry but the fact of the matter is, while ag and livestock ag in particular contribute a good amount to climate change, it’s got a big job to do - feeding everyone!
  • Herbivores like cows and sheep and goats are needed to preserve native forage-based ecosystems and provide food, but at the cost of producing methane that contributes to climate change. However, if we got rid of every cow and sheep and replaced their contribution to human diets with chicken and pigs, we’d have to grow extra food for them, which means more greenhouse gases to grow those foods, and we’re back at square one
  • To me, the real benefit of livestock, especially on range situations, is that they turn human-inedible plant protein into human-edible protein. That’s a significant reason why they’re so important to the human food supply.
  • Livestock also eat a lot of byproducts (brewer’s mash, hulls, tomato pulp, etc) that would otherwise go to waste.  This reduces the impact of their feed production and of waste disposal in other industries. We’d have a lot of reject feed/byproducts sitting around if we got rid of livestock, and those would have greenhouse gas production from their waste disposal.

For me, it amounts to priorities - we know a vegan diet won’t feed everyone and it wastes land. We don’t have enough arable land to feed everyone on a vegan diet, even if everyone could go vegan.

We have researchers like myself and my colleagues working to help farmers reduce greenhouse gas emissions no matter what they farm (greenhouse gas emissions are a waste, remember, and cost farmers money). Livestock, especially in range situations and developing countries, eat a lot of stuff that would otherwise go to waste, and help keep ecosystems healthy.

So it’s not just the analytical life cycle of the animal and it’s impacts, it’s what would the effect on climate change be by a) removing livestock and b) dealing with the human food needs met by doing so?

To me, livestock earn their keep, and while it is our job to keep improving livestock systems to be more efficient and help  prevent worse climate change, we also need to remember that livestock are an important part of the sustainability of existing systems.

So hope that answered your question, anon! For more info, check out this video presentation that you might find neat, as well: http://articles.extension.org/pages/28311/clearing-the-air-on-animal-ag-and-greenhouse-gases

kairi-ou  asked:

Hello! I've seen you guys write some things about the dangers of filming with chained weapons, but I was wondering how dangerous it would be to the wielder? While I was designing a hook and chain mechanism for my MC to move around quickly with in a fantasy world (ability to direct the chain minimally) I found the 'kyoketsu shoge' which combines both the hook and a knife in one. If the chain is occasionally spiked, how dangerous do you think it would be for my MC to swing around?

It really depends on how skilled they are at managing the chain. The kyoketsu shoge is similar to the Chinese Whip Chain/Chain Whip and the Rope Dart. They function similarly to whips, and are a more dangerous (to the wielder) cousin of the nunchaku and three section staff. These weapons all work off similar principles about maintaining momentum and using your own body to provide control. This includes your arms, your neck, your shoulders, your legs, and, on occasion, your whole torso.

Example:

The Rope Dart.

The Nine Section Whip.

Whip weapons are one of the most advanced weapons in a martial disciplines for a reason. If you don’t know how to control it, it will hit you. I mean that, it will and it will hurt. Like the boomerang, the whip or chain always comes back. You are at the mercy of the chain, like any fast moving object, it doesn’t stop on a dime and you’ve got to mitigate the momentum until it finally stops.

The advantage of the whip is that it can strike on multiple angles that are nearly impossible to block. It’s not just on diagonals, a chain or a whip will curve. It can be used to disarm an opponent. When you’re working with a whip made entirely of metal like the nine section whip any part of you it strikes is going to hurt like hell.

If you can master a whip, it’s a very useful weapon, though it shouldn’t be the only weapon your character carries. It does require a great deal more skill than the average and, with a whip chain, you should be prepared for pain. It’s also not a weapon your character could pick up and just wield without any formal training. If we’re talking about a formal Chinese martial discipline, this would be a weapon you’d learn after you mastered the others like the staff and the sword.

Chinese Cinema has many excellent examples of the Chinese varieties of these weapons in use and may provide you with some ideas.

The kyoketsu shoge is a little different because it comes with two ends, a bladed end on one that could be used to hook opponents much like one would when fishing and a metal ring on the other. Similar principles to the others in this category apply when it comes generating momentum and to safety, but worth keeping track of when you’re trying to figure out exactly what you want.

When you’re writing, it’s important to remember that the more complex a weapon is in its movements then the more difficult it will be when it comes to actually applying those actions on the page. The whip is a fantastic weapon for cinema because it’s dazzling. It’s in constant motion, it makes wide sweeping arcs, it’s often too fast for the eye to completely follow, and it’s just fun to watch. You don’t get that luxury when you’re writing. You don’t benefit from visually interesting weapons unless you figure out how to tease the imagination when the audience tries to visualize.

The best way to write weapons, especially complex ones, is grasping the underlying principles of how the weapon is supposed to work. You are at advantage over the practitioner because you only need the principle, as a writer you can simulate the experience. However, you’re at a disadvantage because you’ve never tried to work with one and don’t have the ground level experience of trying to get the weapon to work.

When you want to use a chain weapon like the whip chain in an action sequence, its important to remember that your character needs to keep it in constant motion. The weapon is only deadly when it’s in motion. You throw it out, spin it, wheel it about using your throat, catch on the shoulder, throw it back for another strike. They’re going to need space to use it, which means it’s at a disadvantage in cramped quarters.

What’s going to sell your whip in a written action scene is remembering all the tiny little physical motions that go into maintaining control. Whether it’s snapping the wrist to crack the whip, remembering that the guiding hand controls the whip and the other holds, to wrapping it around the body at the fight’s end to catch and negate the final momentum, what sells the weapon is your ability to accurately represent how it moves in the real world.

A lot of writers try for technical terms as a way to communicate what they’re talking about, my advice is learn them as necessary but don’t assume they’ll do the work for you. Assume your audience is ignorant and focus more on what the weapon does/is supposed to do/the purpose it served in battle rather than terminology. The more complex the weapon is in movement, control, and execution, the more difficult it is to write.

If you do get frustrated during your research, just remember: you jumped straight to the end. The whip chain is a complicated weapon, it’s supposed to be difficult.

If you’ve never used a whip before, this is going to mean watching a lot of tutorials on Youtube and reviewing many an action sequence where the whip is used as primary or secondary weapon.

Good luck!

What are your thoughts on teen wolf? especially writing wise? I have stopped watching regularly around 3b and I wasn't too convinced by what I've seen here on tumblr about the rest of the episodes, in particular 6x10...

i will always have a special place in my heart for the characters i love that the show gave me. i still blog about teen wolf, i write fic, and i enjoyed s1-3a. saying that, i don’t particular enjoy what the show became, or look back on the experience i had as a fan with much nostalgia (i think we were v much used and abused as a fandom online, for sure). i love my part of fandom, though.

short answer about the writing… it was terrible because

1) there was a complete lack of planning and follow through

2) we love this idea/actor/theme for 30 seconds but oops now we don’t

3) they completely misused their social media as a way to a) explain away/correct plot holes in their own writing and b) encourage viewers to watch a show they implied to be many things that it turned out to… not be any of

Hey may I am you something? How does someone get noticed and popular like you? I've been trying a lot but nothing seems to ever work. My art never gets noticed and I'm starting to get desperate. Please tell me how to get noticed!

Okay from what I have noticed a lot of people get popular on youtube or tumblr by doing the following:

A. Appealing to children. Yall are gonna dislike this one, but the majority of people who have time to be involved fans of things are underage. Typically around 12-14. The majority of my audience probably falls in this range, and as such I tend to tailor my content towards that. AKA I do a lot of ship videos, since 12-14 year old fans like to squeal over them, and I do a lot of edgy shit, since 12-14 year olds are typically pretty edgy.

B. Consistent storyline/schedule. You’ll notice that the videos of mine that have the most views are parts of a series. Ask blogs also tend to do well if they have a set schedule and update very frequently, honestly you don’t even need to be that good. Like I’ve seen a lot of people who I’ve honestly thought are not that talented get extremely popular because they do really popular fan comics and update a lot. Same goes for undertale comic dubs. I’ve seen a lot of people who are bad at making videos and bad at acting in general thrive because they chose a series no one else had seen and stuck to it. That brings me to the third thing actually

C. Do things no one has seen yet. You’re not going to get popular by releasing worse versions of things people have already done. This applies moreso to youtube I think, getting to the series first is a BIG part of getting popular if you’re not a very well known youtuber. Like I’m gonna hear some of you say “buT YOU DO SERIES PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY DONE WHY AREN”T YOU FOLLOWING YOUR OWN ADVICE” well let me counter that. I currently have around 240000 subscribers, so most of the views we bring in now are directly linked to the popularity of our channel, and not necessarily the comic itself anymore. Don’t get me wrong, the comic is a huge part, but we are a pretty huge channel. However, I got popular due to underline, there’s really not much denying that. I loved the series, and I still am fully indebt to the creators for being such amazing people, because they truly got me to the place I am now. This is because everyone had done underline part 1, but no one had continued it. I did, and that alone got me around 20k subscribers.

D. Actively try to improve. It honestly doesn’t matter if you start out weakly, or if you don’t really know what you’re doing or how to do it. Take a look at my first videos, they were AWFUL. Everyone starts out not really knowing what they’re doing. Don’t let that deter you from actively trying to become better. And remember, the best way to do that is practice. Sure you’ll get some haters in the beginning, but try not to let that affect you and push forward, I promise you its worth it!

E. Sometimes there isn’t a secret to success/Focus on your own work. Sometimes people will just like something that you think is absolute trash, and you’ll ask yourself ‘how on earth did they get popular??’ but the internet is a weird place, and people can just spontaneously become popular sometimes. If their art/content has worth to someone, you can’t deny that. And because of that, I recommend not getting super invested in that and being like ‘THIS PERSON IS POPULAR BUT IM NOT???? THEYRE GARBAGE THO? I QUIT’ like just try to focus on your own work and don’t get too caught up in other popular blogs/content if you dont have a similar format. If you do however, I actually recommend keeping an eye on them and see what they do, since it can be really fun to do some crossovers or possibly get to know them.

F. Make friends. that one’s pretty self explanatory.

ANYWAYS this was my very long and very indepth guide to my “secrets to success”, although the important thing is to not get too caught up in this kinda stuff and just have fun making your content. I wish you all luck~

also the only reason I really gave such an indepth answer is a lot of yall have been asking me similar questions, so I thought it would be nice to sit down and fully explain.

Hi! Could you Please do a drabble/Imagine where the reader is basically being forced by her parents to marry Loki who she doesn't want to marry because of all the stories she's heard of him? Sorry if that is to specific. ~tess~ P.S. this blog is amazing I've been through over 25 pages since this morning.

Was about to decline when I got some inspiration, not sure where this’ll go but let’s see!

“The dark prince? You do realize who you’re asking me to marry right?” You looked incredulously at your parents.

“Odin has ordered it, apparently the late queen’s last orders were that her son be married. The king hopes it will temper his son.” Your mother replied.

“Wasn’t he the one who let those dreadful creatures into Asgard? And then he went and attacked those poor weak mortals.”

Your father sighed, “It’s not the most ideal, I understand, but it is a great honor for our family, and it will bring prosperity to us as well. There is a large dowry for your hand.”

You folded your arms tightly against your chest, clenching your jaw and looking away. “You would sell me?”

“My fair child, it’s not ideal,” your mother began gently, reaching out and touching your arm softly.

You felt tears stinging your eyes, “Ideal.” You spat. “Both of you, wretched.”

“Know your place.” Your father interrupted you sternly. “You will be a loving wife for the prince. He is confined to the living quarters of the palace after all, you may find escape as you need but you will be a faithful wife and if it is expected to give an heir, you will do so.”

You swallowed hard, looking back at him. “Do I have a choice?”

“I had hoped you would take this opportunity with better grace, given our situation. We are in danger of losing our lands, our home, it is not what we wanted either but it is necessary.”

“You would sell me to Asgard’s dark prince, his cruelty is famed throughout the kingdom. He only just got out of prison, supposedly sacrificing himself to save Thor, yet confined to his quarters, is he even safe to be wed?”

“Perhaps the rumors are not to be trusted?” Your mother offered hopefully.

You grit your teeth, closing your eyes again and shook your head stiffly.

Your father sighed, “The wedding will be within the month. You leave in an hour, it will be a small private event, but try and be gracious to your fiance.”

And so it was, within an hour, you found yourself on the Bifrost, making your way to the expansive Asgardian palace. A set of dark green eyes watched from the dark confines of one of the royal bedrooms, steadily inspecting the incoming parade of his wife-to-be.

“This is the prince’s room, m’lady, he should be within.” The guard said, bowing low before turning and walking away.

You sighed heavily, running your hands down your dress attempting to straighten the wrinkles from travel. Raising your fist, you knocked softly, wincing as the sound echoed throughout the vacant halls.

The door opened soundlessly, the room dark within.

“Hello?” You called warily.

“Hello,” came the listless reply.

You entered in further, a strange black haired man sitting on the edge of his balcony, gazing out at the lands of Asgard. He wore a long sleeved forest green, so deep it looked black, leather shirt and leather trousers with armored boots rising to his knees. A green cloak sat furled underneath him as he idly tossed a dagger in the air.

“Prince Loki?” You asked hesitantly.

“Who else would be in his chambers?” The reply was equal parts bored and mocking.

You grit your teeth, “Forgive me, I haven’t actually seen him before, merely told of his infamy.”

Loki’s eyes flashed as he looked over at you. You noted the gold emblem adorned on his shirt, resting at his throat. “Stories, it seems, is all anyone has of me these days.”

“Are they not true?”

“Which ones?” He laughed mirthlessly, once more returning his gaze to the waters surrounding the Bifrost.

“I am to be your wife.” You tried changing the subject.

“How exciting.” He muttered, “the creature I am to lay with, already repulsed by me. This is my reward? Surely I should have stayed dead this time.”

You blushed at the thought of sex with him. There was no doubting his attractiveness but everything about him still filled you with dread. “Stayed dead?”

“It seems no matter how hard one tries, I don’t stay dead.”

“One?”

“Many have tried to kill me, myself included, yet all seem to fail.” He looked back at you, tilting his head, “What do you think of that?”

“I think that’s dreadful, especially that you include yourself.”

“My crimes were great and my hopes few, surely it was worth an attempt.” Loki shrugged, a ghost of a bitter smile touching his lips.

You moved further into the room, allowing the door to swing shut behind you. The rush of air sent a slight shiver down your back as you felt caged with this beast of a man.

“Don’t worry, I won’t force you into any situation you don’t want, I’m not that sort of monster.”

“What sort of monster are you?” You asked nervously.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?”

Is this alright for you babe?- Smut

“Y/N! Cheryl’s here for you darling.”

“Okay Mom, I’ll be right down.” You shouted back, quickly standing from your bed picking up the beg that rested against it. It had been a while since you and Cheryl shared the bed, with her burning down her house, her Mom didn’t want her to live with her anymore, but she caved in eventually, this was actually the first time going round to her new house.

As you walk down the stairs you were able to see her hair before anything else, a smile was soon apparent.

You snuck up behind her, noticing how she was paying attention just scrolling on her phone, your hands wrapped around her waist, your hands slightly going underneath her top, feeling her soft skin of her stomach, you rested your chin on top of her shoulder, “Hey babe.” You whispered pressing a small kiss to her neck. She turned around, your hands still around her waist, she’s now face to face, “Hey,” Cheryl said biting her lip while her eyes scanned over my face. Her lips pressed against mine, her red lipstick leaving a trace.

“Ehm” Your Mom cleared her throat, Cheryl and you broke apart, quickly moving to stand side by side, your face suddenly flushing red, you looked at your Mom to see her smiling, clearly loving the situation that you were in.

Nice to see you again Mrs Y/L/N,”

“You too Cheryl, I’ll see you tomorrow Y/N be safe love you.”

“Love you Mom.” You smiled, turning and walking out of the house hand in hand.

Once you got to Cheryl house she told you that her Mom was out of town, so it would just be you two, with a wink being sent in your direction. “You stay here Y/N I’ve got something to show you, make you self comfortable babe, I have a feeling we’ll be in here for a while.” She giggled and walked in the direction of what you assumed was her bedroom.

You sat on her sofa, thinking about all the possibilities as to what Cheryl is showing you, a figure appeared in the door way, “Is this alright for you babe?” She said all innocent like, placing her finger in between her lips, slightly biting on the nail. There she was standing in the door way, her pale skin in contrast to the khaki green lace bra, that left nothing to imagination and a small thong to match, her height exaggerated with the black knee-high boots, her hair thrown up into a messy bun with some strands loose.

Fuck yeah,” You said already slowly taking your jacket off.

She smirked, slowly walking towards you, her hands tangled in your hair, pulling it slightly at the roots, earning a low groan. You broke apart to take your t shirt off leaving the pair of you standing opposite to each other, eyes roaming, both slightly out of breath waiting to see who would make the next move.

Stuff this,” You said diving forward, your hands reaching between the elastic of her underwear, your fingers moving down to her slit, feeling the wetness turn you on even more, you fingers started to move faster across her clit, little gentle whimpers left her lips, her other hand rested on your shoulder her grip getting tighter, her nails slightly dug in, you leaning in close,

You like that baby? You like it when I rub your clit?” You smirked looking at Cheryl seeing the euphoria that she was experiencing.

Please Y/N let me cum.” She whined clearly quite desperate.

You placed your lips onto her neck, gently sucking on the skin making it to go dark purple, you gently tugged on the clasp of her bra, giving her the sign. She wrapped one of her legs around you trying to get even more friction. Her bra fell loose, you smirked knowing this is the reaction you created.

Baby, I’m nearly there go a little faster Y/N.” Cheryl panted her body moving up and down trying to get more friction.

She started to get tighter around your fingers, you knew it wasn’t long now. You leaned closer to her ear, “Come on Cheryl, cum on my fingers show me what you can do.”

Oh shit Y/N.” Cheryl moaned her orgasm hit her hard her nails dug into your shoulders leaving small crescents indented to your skin.

Once she came down she smiled at you leaning in and kissed you on the lips, “Thanks baby, now lets go upstairs it’s your turn.” She said biting her lip holding your hand leading the way, your clothes getting discarded along the way, the next few hours were going to be fun.

Hi guys, sorry for how long I’ve been away, some crazy shit has been happening and to the person that requested this I’m so sorry it took a while. I've got a series of requests that I am currently working on so don’t worry if you haven’t seen yours published yet. Feel free to send in more requests and my master list is over on my blog.

First of all, love your blog. Second of all, as one of the wise omgcp bloggers, what would you think of a graceling au (where some people are born w different colored eyes and a special skill that can range from turning your face inside out to fighting). Who would be graced and what graces would they have? I feel like bitty would have baking and dex would probs have fixing things but what do you think about the others? -omgpoindexterplease

i refuse to believe that nursey isn’t graced. those leaves drift to him just a little too easily. his would probably be something artistic and maybe a little vague–to create poetry that’s exactly what the reader needs to see, somehow.

ransom and holster both thought neither of them were graced growing up. it wasn’t until they met each other that they realized they have a telepathic connection with each other.

shitty isn’t graced. but he’s still smart, and he still wants to fight for what he believes in, even if he has to work harder for it. he claims that seeing people without graces as lesser, or viewing people with them as unfairly advantaged, can only lead to dangerous things.

lardo…her grace is a little hard to explain. it’s accuracy. it’s how she always wins at beer pong, but it’s also how she knows what art she needs to create when she feels something, and how she always knows what her friends need to hear. it’s what makes her such a great manager. of course, that doesn’t mean she always goes with her gut if she gets too blinded by emotion. she’s graced, but she’s still human.

chowder’s not graced. when he was little, he was sad about it, but he’s long since accepted that not having it doesn’t make his life any worse. he’s since decided that he just wants to be the best person he can be. even though he isn’t graced, he has a great knack for making people feel at ease, and some people are surprised he doesn’t have some kind of a comfort grace after they’ve spilled everything to him.

bad bob has one of the most powerful hockey graces ever seen, and alicia has an artistic grace that just couldn’t be replicated. when alicia was pregnant, everyone was thrilled to see what grace their child would have. an artist like his mother? an athlete like his father? something entirely new?

and then jack was born without a grace at all.

it was hard on jack growing up. every time he stepped into a rink, he felt like he was never going to be the same as his father–he literally couldn’t be. so he vowed to work twice as hard as his father ever had, so no one would say that jack zimmermann didn’t have the skill it took, that he would never make it without a grace. of course, jack always pushed too hard–and, well, you know how it goes from there.

i've fallen in love with trans!percy thanks to your blog omg can we please have some more headcanons? maybe about percy at school or annabeth and his relationship?

sorry this is so late!!!!!! glad i saved it for tdov though haha ☆

okay so i was just thinking about this but (1) trans percy goes down to visit his fathers kingdom or just chill in the ocean and other sea creature start calling him “legs” and at first he thinks their being sexist and catcalling (fishcalling?) him and gets mad until he realizes that hes the only person down there with legs??

2) not once does he experience transphobia in his fathers kingdom, from any ‘magical’ creature, or even from monsters. theyll stab him and poison him, but they never misgender him and he thinks thats the weirdest and somehow most refreshing thing ever

3) some of the kids at camp can be a bit ignorant, and some of the ares cabin can be pretty harsh about “are you man enough??” but it never strikes him as transphobic. most kids who are transphobic get a nice, long discussion with mr d (bad cop) and chiron (good cop) about Trans Livin’ tm… overall, though, after spending so many days riding pegasi and taking archery lessons from a guy whos half horse, trans people arent really that fantastical/surprising. “who cares if that guy has a vagina? i saw a chick with two weird snake bodies legs. THATS fucked up.”

4) annabeth admits she’s never felt too much like a girl OR a boy, but at the same time feels she might be both. percy comes out as trans to her then, and she pretends to be surprised (“oh wow! i didnt know. we have so much in common.” “you suck at lying, wise girl.” “ive seen your boobs, percy.” “…oh… i forgot.”). theyre very supportive of each other, always and forever - which is canon more than headcanon ;3c

5) paul and sally are of course the best parents a guy could ask for. paul never, NEVER tells percy “maybe you should go to your mom about that?” when he comes to him for advice. paul knows that percy comes to him for Man Stuff and even if Man Stuff isnt always Cis Man Stuff, paul still wants to be able to help, so he’ll give the best insight he can or occasionally even say “ask me again tomorrow, i’ll sleep on it” and then spend all might learning whatever he can to help percy. he doesnt care what anyone says, percy is his son, and that will never, never change (unless percy says it does, but, thats different)

6) trans percy got me emotional, my dudes, i just. i just really love trans percy, hell yes

thank you for sending the ask! - mod will
