Last of the Legion and Chill

My personal take on how movie night should have gone for Ryder and Reyes. I mean, that last piece of the quest is on Kadara, so why not??? You know damn well that Reyes would have gotten that movie for Ryder, and invited himself on board in exchange.

“Do you want me to leave?”

“No!” It was an easy answer, she didn’t have to think about it, that fixation she had with him always bringing her back to Kadara.

The tug of a smile at his lips and the gentle ease of his eyes reminded her so much of that look on his face when they shared their quiet night on the rooftops of the port. “Then I’ll stay. If the Pathfinder allows it.”

“She allows it,” she breathed without looking away from him. An embarrassing heat rose in her face from the depth of his stare. There was just enough light in the room to illuminate the golden hazel of his eyes, pulling her in, drowning her in the depths of their color. Too many things were going through her brain. Memories. Fantasies. Kitt blamed the alcohol and it drew her eyes back down to the glass in hand. They were supposed to have a professional relationship. He was supposed to be a contact. But he wasn’t. Everyone at the Nexus would frown at what she was doing in Kadara, but screw all of them. Not once did she have a choice in where her life was going. This was going to be her choice. Reyes was her choice, whatever consequences it would bring.

“You’re thinking too hard about something.” Amusement laced his whiskey heavy words. A gentle finger tapped the bottom of her chin, drawing her eyes from her own drink to the smuggler at her side. She could just drown in those eyes. Liquid gold, melting her down until nothing was left but that molten heat in her chest. “It is difficult to resist the temptation to kiss you right now.”

“Then why are you resisting?” Her words came out breathier than she intended, but the whiskey was doing its work. Liquid courage, sure enough.

A laugh bubbled up from his lips, dark and husky as he leaned in close, his warm breath tickling the skin of her cheek. “You’re something else, Kitt.” He brushed a thumb over her lip tauntingly slow. The moment was lingering. Too long. Her stomach was doing somersaults and she couldn’t take it anymore.

“Either kiss me or pour me another glass of whiskey, Shena.”

what i want in a sinnoh remake: a very long list of unreasonable demands

- diamond and pearl opening- bring back being attacked by starly. c’mon. that as a fully animated cutscene would be a lot more impactful than platinum’s opening

- and while we’re at lake verity, throw in a mesprit sighting. links the player into the overarching plot much earlier on; when did we first hear about the lake spirits in the originals? celestic town? i cant remember it’s been too long

- speaking of surfing, for the love of Arceus please make surfing faster and reduce the encounter rate for water (and caves while we’re at it- mt. coronet without repels is more of a hell than the distortion world could ever hope to be)

- bidoof is every ride pokemon. need to fly somewhere? tie it to a drifblim. surf? tape it to a floatzel. fight me.

What do you think of JARVIS? Can he get inside your arm? Has he ever done so? Are you ever concerned about him taking over the world?

i like jarvis. hes everything nickel science fiction novels promised back when i was a kid.

jarvis–and anyone else for that matter–cant get inside my arm because my arm has no ability to transmit or receive data, except for an internal data port under the armor plates which has to be accessed with a unique cable. so if you can get at it and you have the necessary equipment you can mess with my arm, but it’s impossible to hack while im out doing stuff.

not that tony or i told anyone that for the first few months. i managed to knock steves glass out of his hands four times, throw things at clint six times, and smack sam upside the head twice before they realized that my arm was not being remotely controlled by ‘the evil Dr Dextrous.’

im not concerned about jarvis taking over the world because probably hed be a lot better at keeping things running smoothly that current management. jarvis has managed to keep tony stark mostly alive without actually having hands for like. several decades now. which probably qualifies him for sainthood, or at least a really nice retirement package. i figure after all that chaos managing a few billion non-geniuses without access to flying tanks is basically a cakewalk.

but since jarvis has more sense than–well. basically any avenger–he knows that taking over the world would be way more stress than its worth.
jarvis is smart like that.

About FFII's Map and canoes

When I was a kid my parents gave to me FF I & II Dawn of Souls for the GBA. I think I was 11 when the game came out (2004). I already liked RPGs and had some experience with FFVII and VI so that was one of the best gifts I’ve ever received.

So yeah, you start the game and all that and at one point shortly after the beginning you have to cross this lake with a canoe, in order to get to the port town of Paloom for plot reasons

You start on the town marked with the “X”: Altair. And the town with the circle was your destination; Paloom. Easy enough, right?

But I had a problem: my english wasn’t very good at the time. I could understand what was going on but certain words were unknown to me. Hablo español, pero desde niño me jugaba todo en inglés y a veces no sabía una mierda. Pero era divertido.

So I didn’t knew I had a canoe

I just thought “Haaaa that’s a lot of water, but I can’t walk through it, haha, who do you think I am?”, I didn’t even thought of walking close enough for the canoe to appear.

So… what did I do?

Where did I go?

.

.

.

…And after a pair of days of utter terror, save scumming and confusion, I managed to reach Paloom! By the way, I couldn’t enter Bafsk, the game just didn’t let me and I was absolutely heartbroken. Rude. I guess they needed some privacy with the whole Dreadnought construction business.

Yep, fuck this map. And fuck the Palamecia desert area.

In Defense of the Misunderstood Hero, Mori Ougai

I’m sure many would raise eyebrows when they read the title because, Mori? A hero?

Many people portrayed Mori as a sadistic devil, but in no canon situation has Mori ever shown any sadistic tendency (like Dazai has). In fact, I’d say he’s the reverse of that. He took care of Elise very well, despite/even though she’s his own ability. He never once has hurt people for the sake of hurting people.

In fact whenever he didn’t have any business to take care of, his true personality shone through and it was not of a cold, heartless man with no conscience. Rather it was one full of dorkiness and gentle patience. Here, he even contacted Ango (who was sweating bullet because holy shit he’s being called by the fucking boss of Port Mafia) just to ask what color of dress will fit Elise more.

(For the love of anything holy I’ve scoured Ango and Oda’s tag in tumblr yet I can’t find it. It’s the extra DVD comic featuring Buraiha trio drinking and talking shit about Mori. In exchange, have these dorky dad and son interacting;

First thing first, I will give you what I think is the most important fact about Mori. Look at his line in this scene

Now this is his true nature; his main motivation for doing everything he did. The good of the organization.

At no point has Mori’s action ever benefit only himself. At every instance he appeared in the story, he’s doing something for the Mafia and for Yokohama. The only self-centered thing he has ever done was asking Elise to wear what he wanted her to wear and that’s moot point anyway since she’s his Ability and presumably modeled after his ‘ideal’ little girl.

In this scene, he saved four members of ADA and even gave Atsushi an important lesson. Why would he do such a thing when he could literally immobilize Anne and Lucy by bloodlust alone? He could have let her take Tanizaki and Atsushi, then pressure her to let him out with his memory intact. Not to mention that his Ability, Elise, was waiting just outside, standing by ready to break him out any time.

If he does this, not only he will go free with the memory of the attack and thus the secret of Anne’s Room, he would also take care of not one but three ADA agents. Rather, he chose to save all of them plus every single person Anne has swallowed in the Dark Room.

Now here;

This is the scene where he took over as boss. The fact that the Old Boss was bedridden and hallucinating while seemingly so thin, also from the way he was narrated by Hirostu in episode 21, implicate that his condition was something he contracted at a long period of time rather than it being something sudden.

Notice the circumstance in which he did it. Mori only killed the boss after he issued the order that would bring destruction not only to the Mafia but also to the city and nation at large, killing many people whether criminal or innocent. He didn’t do it before even though he could have.

By becoming the biggest bad of the bad, he resolved himself to take care of the light from the shadows. And this is important because if he hadn’t stepped in at that time either the Old Boss would have burnt Yokohama down or another heinous criminal would have taken over and brings the nation down with them.

He is protecting Yokohama by not letting people worse than him to take control of its biggest criminal organization. Notice what Kouyou think about him;

She supported him because of this too. She knew what it felt like to under one of those leaders that cared only for money and power like the Old Boss. Kouyou will not support people if all they brought with them was suffering and death the way she was forced to feel when her dearest was taken away from her. Under Mori’s reign, our queen Kouyou pledge her loyalty not to him but the kinder way he brought.

It can also be seen in this scene.

Mori could have taken effort to keep Kouyou there, but his tone and body language are open. He knew that Kouyou can go anytime and he’s not fighting to keep her there; Kouyou decided to stay on her own free will and he is appreciative of knowing he had a single ally he can absolutely trust on who also knew of his true motivation.

In this scene

It was made clear that he respect the Old Boss, so much that the death of a hundred subordinate made him embarrassed.  He’s not upset that he lost some underlings, he’s upset that he lost them without a good reason to justify their death. A miscalculation has taken a hundred of his soldiers.

And you might think his reaction to this is rather cold, but remember that all of them were members of the mafia. All of them are criminals who would be executed if they fall into the hands of the police and they also knew what they’re getting into when they joined the Organization.

You can probably say what he did to Odasaku was horrible, sure. But it was expected for the boss of the Mafia to do so. (further reading for this topic)

But you have to admit it was a stroke of utter genius. With the gifted Business Permit and no longer fearing the government, Mori would be freer to take down opposing criminal organization that might bother the peace. Rather, he focused the Mafia to expanding its power and outwardly he did so, like this there will be very little chance for either a rebellion or an enemy organization attacking them in their HQ. This would also mean less threat to Yokohama.

Fukuzawa’s remark in this was absolutely true. Not only between the two organization but also for him and Mori specifically. Mori loved Yokohama, enough to dip into the darkest of dark to protect it. And Fukuzawa knew it too because look at his line here

In this, it can be said that he didn’t want a war to break in Yokohama that might disturb its peace. But then why say ‘balance’?

This is because Fukuzawa knew the extent of his subordinate’s strength also that they will be able to kill Mori if they go all out. This is what he feared the most. While if he died, the Agency can be well-taken care of in Kunikida’s hand, once Mori’s dead there’s no one to reign in the Port Mafia and keep it from wreaking havoc, thus destroying the balance of Yokohama city into what it was before; the Dragon Head Rush. (you might want to read the novel of dark era to really grasp the situation. But basically it was a gang war that led to many victims including the families of Odasaku’s orphans)

More than that, the people who might succeed Mori would not be as kind as him. They might do what the Old Boss did and try to burn Yokohama down.

And this, I think, is also the main reason why Mori sent Dazai away from the Mafia. It is, of course, easy to assume what Dazai remarked about Mori’s intention in chapter 30/episode 21 to be the truth; that he did it to remove a threat to his position.

But is this the whole story?

The fact that he kept Dazai’s spot empty rather than choosing someone else to fill it was a paradox if you were to look at him from the angle of a man hungry for power. He has anticipated Dazai’s return, was so sure of it in fact that he sacrificed monetary and workload gains of having another Executive. If he wanted Dazai back in the first place, then why drive him out of the Mafia and into the ADA?

For now, imagine what would have happened if Dazai took over as the Boss if he’s still the same man he was before Oda’s death. Cruel, ruthless and uncaring for people’s life as he was, he would have gone into the same track as the Old Boss and destroys Yokohama as his mental health eroded. Not even Odasaku would be able to save him from himself at this point.

This is also why he asked Dazai back to the Mafia after taking such extreme methods to drive him out. Of course there are another reason, that is he needed his right hand back to drive out the Guild as he remarked.

But the main reason why he asked back after all this time was because there are people in ADA who have taught him about having something worth loving and worth protecting.

Mori felt that Dazai has learnt enough about the light and why it is something worth protecting. With it, when Dazai inevitably take his seat as the Boss of Port Mafia, Dazai would be able to follow his legacy as the Darth Vader of Bungou Stray Dogs and The Dark Knight of Yokohama. This is Mori’s special way of grooming Dazai to become his successor.

All this was so Dazai can be his successor and not the Old Boss’.

Conclusion for those who are too lazy to read 2000+ words of Mori being awesome: no, Mori is not an evil incarnate born to manipulate everyone to his own amusement.

If anything, he’s the greatest hero of the story. The same way the ADA is protecting the city and Japan from the light, Mori is protecting it from the shadows. With the balance that has been made between him and Fukuzawa, it is imperative that he keep doing what he did, or the balance will fall and Yokohama condemned into a lake of fire.

Asagiri Kafka is truly an exceptional writer. They made Mori into this all-bad boss of the Mafia while slipping in his real face every so often. Here is the author who made every character complex and with their own motivation. What made you think they’ll make the ‘villain’ as simple as a man existing just to be a villain?

Even Fitzgerald and Fyodor got development and reasoning for doing what they did, but the difference is they’re arc-villain and not whole story-villain like Mori. Their reign will be over with their arc, but Mori’s will live as long as BSD continues, so it’s imperative that they got their development and exposition early on so the readers can sympathize with them.

Thus I concluded my exposition of the anti-hero that has been protecting Yokohama all this time not by bathing in sunlight but by submerging himself in blood yet capable of keeping his head out of it depth; Mori Ougai.

Towards a New Left Movement

These are just some of my thoughts on the state and future of the Left as of late, feel free to ignore or to debate or to reblog, but it’s mostly just because I want to shape my scattered thoughts into solid form.

I’ll begin with my thoughts on how I believe our praxis should look in an era of right-wing hegemony and neoliberal consensus. I believe that our fundamental focus should be building dual power in several forms, which I’ll outline. The first [and most important, in my opinion] is localized dual power. We should be helping people organize into a system of nesting, democratic councils, similar to those in west Kurdistan, that begin on the street level, then the district level, then the city level, then the region level, and so on. These councils can then be used to create strong, participatory local politics, whether by organizing mutual aid programs for food assistance or healthcare or getting “socialist” [left-center Democrats or Socialist Alternative etc] candidates into local office or organizing neighborhood people’s defense from white supremacists, neo-nazis, ICE, and police. The second form is unionized dual power. I think in the deindustrializing global North, labor unions aren’t nearly as useful nor militant as they used to be, but I believe workers in certain key industries [particularly those put forward by Monsieur Dupont in Nihilist Communism and discussions I have had with @gendernihilistanarchocommunist] have immense power over global Capital because they work in its arteries—the logistics industry. For decades now, an ostensible supply chain revolution has taken place to so-called “just in time” manufacturing, in which transportation, manufacturing, shipping, etc are timed to have no wasted moments in between. The advantage of this, for us, is that if dockers shut down a port, the factory that those commodities were going to gets shut down, and the factory that that factory’s commodities were going to gets shut down, and so on, rippling through the economy and causing multi billion dollar losses to Capital, inching closer and closer to capitalist crisis. One idea would be to salt these immensely powerful unions, such as the ILWU, and push them [as much as possible] towards more disruptive, more radical, more frequent action.

The second, and I think less important question, is how I believe we as the Left should organize in order to enact this praxis. I think that anything from affinity groups to communist parties would be capable and effective at organizing dual power, salting select unions, organizing self-defense and mutual aid, rallying behind left-center electoral candidates, etc. I think the best option, however, would be for us to organize a nonsectarian, multi-tendency party that would serve to organize militants across a broad geographic space [hopefully across the country and even more hopefully the world] who would act both as long-term, dedicated organizers of dual power as well as “agents of intensification” [stole that from Endnotes] in the situation of uprisings, strikes, protests, and eventually, hopefully, revolutionary situations. The Communist Labor Party in the Pacific Northwest seems to be the closest model to this I see in the US, and I think similar parties [or additional chapters of the CLP] could and should be organized nationally and internationally. If we are going to organize local dual power, it would be incredibly helpful and power-leveraging to be able to link, say, the dual power system of Seattle to the dual power system of New York City to the dual power system of Mexico City to the dual power system of Mumbai, and I think that can be best organized through an efficient party form. The same goes for linking “salted” militants in, say, an Oakland dockers’ union to “salted” militants in a Shenzhen dockers’ union, and bringing a single, albeit powerful, strike action to a potentially world-economy-destroying strike action.

I think through these organizational forms—a local dual power system, “salted” labor unions in key industries, and a nonsectarian, multi-tendency party—we can restore power to a broad Left [from anarchocommunists on the left all the way [in my opinion] to left-center liberals or maybe DSA on the right] in order to crush the Right and work towards building socialism. Questions of state seizure are certainly not relevant now, and I think in a world of high-tech, asymmetric warfare [cue marxism-leninism-memeism disagreeing, lol] and multi-continent supply chains, making economic autarky in the face of embargo very difficult [although, as proletarianization and industrialization continue to develop in the global South, chances for surviving and even thriving of marxist-leninist states look increasingly higher], questions of state seizure may never be relevant, as worldwide implosion of capitalism and communization in its bones may be the only option left. Either way, I think that left unity is paramount in the face of the Left’s weakness and the Right’s strength, and we need to be organizing on a nonsectarian, multi-tendency, anti-capitalist basis.

I think this is a good start as far as solidifying my thoughts goes, and I may add more later on, but I’d like to hear people’s thoughts on it if anyone is interested!

Of Dazai and the Old Boss – An Analysis Report

Wordcount: 1.374.

So ever since I started reading the manga, there was always one character I always wondered about; the Old Boss, or the boss that came before Mori. Sure he seemed like an unimportant side character in the way he’s presented, but I have reasons to believe he’s more than that.

First, let’s compile what we know about him.

1.     He was ruthless even when he’s not bedridden and paranoid, as was said by Kouyou whose lover was killed because she tried to escape the Mafia with him.

And again when Tanizaki tried to kill Mori but was stopped by Kouyou, saying that if Mori died, the Mafia would return to its ‘wretched ways’. We can say with complete confidence that Mori’s way is so much ‘kinder’ than the old boss.

2.       He was bedridden with illness that also made him paranoid of attacks. This is not the case before the illness strike because Hirotsu mentioned he become like that after the illness. If Mori hadn’t stopped him by slicing his throat, he would have burnt Yokohama down.

4.       Wait that’s it? Yep. All we knew about him was in that episode and that chapter. But what we know about him was profound.

First let’s look at this scene:

Notice how Hirotsu mentioned Dazai specifically? Here’s the original panel for that scene:

In this, we can confidently say that Hirotsu singled out Dazai about how was the one who should’ve been most not alright with the development. The words used for it ‘Dazai –kun mo rikai suru tokoro de attarou‘  implies this. It hints that Dazai should’ve been resentful to Mori because he killed the Old Boss. But against all odds, he understood why Mori did what he did.

Then there’s this scene.

It really bothered me and when I looked deeper this is what cemented my conclusion of Dazai and the Old Boss’ connection. So as we could see in this scene, Mori killed the Old Boss and had Dazai become the sole witness. Now this premise has many problems.

1. Other than Mori, who was a doctor so obviously he was to take care of the sick, notice that Dazai was the only one in the room. Now this is strange. He was the only one who was by the Old Boss’ side, all alone in the room with the vulnerable, sick man when there’s no doctor to hover on the bedside. This in and of itself is a proof of their bond. If they weren’t well-known to have it, then all the Mafia would be suspicious to the fact that he’s accompanying the boss when he’s the most vulnerable.

On top of that he was entrusted with the Boss’ security as he was in the room with Mori who might or might not harm him (spoiler, he harmed the boss.) so he was supposed to be the one to care the most about the Old Boss’ wellbeing.

2.       As we know from the light novel, Odasaku mentioned that Dazai was considered to become an Executive at 16. In this scene he was only 14 and at that point of time, he had enough sway in the Organization that he can be the sole witness to the boss’ will and everyone just—nods and go along with it, making Mori the new boss despite them should be having Five Executive that would have fought for the seat. Why?

3.       In this case, Dazai cannot be adopted and raised by Mori as the fandom believed. If he was Mori’s and he became the sole witness everyone would call bull on it because he’d be perceived as Mori’s accomplice in taking out the Old Boss. They’d be executed and one of the upper echelon would take the throne themselves.

This would only work if the Port Mafia to believe that he couldn’t harm the boss and wouldn’t let harm come to him.

But what about this picture, you ask? Well, Mori did have a connection with Dazai too seing how Dazai got the coat he wore from before he was 14 to 18 from him. That’s a good 4 years wearing the same thing. I think this was actually the same case with Chuuya not appearing in the Dark Era; the plot has yet to be told to the readers and kept secret.

And then there’s the possibility that they knew each other because of Dazai’s wounds. If the Old Boss is as ruthless as Kouyou made him out to be, it won’t be far-fetched to say he’s the one resposible for Dazai’s numerous injuries and was frequently sent to Mori, the doctor, to get treatment.

Summary:  the Organization needs to know Dazai well and for some reason connect him with not only being close enough to the Old Boss for it not be strange for him to be all alone in the room with him and having enough credibility that he can’t possibly lie about the Old Boss’ last will. On top of that, he needs some reason to be the one ‘most not alright with it’ in a personal sense.

So what would make this credible? What could make this work? It would be if by doing so he was giving up his rights to the throne.

Here cometh my conclusion: Dazai was the Old Boss’ son and the rightful heir to the Port Mafia. If he was one, it won’t be strange for him to have credibility as 14-year old kid claiming to be the sole witness to a boss of The Mafia’s biggest bad that made a city doctor its next Boss.  More than that, it would be natural for him to spend time alone in the Boss’ bedside when he was sick and vulnerable.

No, I won’t be dropping Darth Vader’s ‘I am your father’ bomb here, despite it being extremely tempting. How many father and child bound by blood have you seen in BSD? That’s right, none. No reason to break the pattern now.

But what is prevalent? Adopting orphans. Hell, it was dropped by Odasaku in his last moment as one of Dazai’s driving force. In fact, most of the main cast are either adopted orphans or have adopted an orphan. (Fukuzawa & Ranpo, Kunikida & Rokuzo, Akutagawa/Atsushi and Dazai, need I go on?)

Here’s my verdict: Dazai was the heir to the Port Mafia because he was the Old Boss’ adopted. When the Old Boss died, everyone in the Mafia who knew about it, thought that he couldn’t possibly lie because by doing so he’d be defacing the Old Boss and giving away his rights to the throne. This gave him the ultimate credibility and thus allowing Mori to become the next King.

Most of all, this also solve the mystery of Mori’s behavior. Why drive Dazai away when he’s 18, when Mori could’ve killed him or make him go away before? He made the preparation to drive Dazai away two years beforehand when Dazai was 16, a good two years after becoming boss. The answer was because this will reveal his play to his subordinate. In the light novel Odasaku mentioned about Mori’s fearsome reputation for being ruthless and clever as hell. And this is the key; reputation.

If Mori killed Dazai before he got a secure standing in the Mafia, he would be accused to be killing the Old Boss and taking down his heir. Everyone would be on the scent of blood like sharks, especially in a place as cruel as the Mafia. So he got himself a reputation, backed by people loyal to him (Chuuya, Kouyou and, in an extent, Ace who was loyal only to money) and when he was sure that he has shown what he could and would do to the whole Mafia and the world, he cut off Dazai because he was no longer needed and now poses only threat.

By exiling the Prince, he would be able to hog the throne for himself since the older members would not be rallying behind Dazai to retake his rights. Truly a long-running plan befitting of him.

But hey, that’s just a theory. A BSD theory. Aaaand cut.

I want to start with a bold statement.

For far too long in this country, progressive Canadians have been fighting a rearguard action against privatization, deregulation and austerity. In many ways when it comes to privatization its become a one-way street. Right wing governments, privatize, we fight back, but we don’t aim to take anything back that belongs to us.

I’ll give you an example from my region. In 1997, the Liberals privatized the Hudson’s Bay Rail Line in the port of Churchill. They sold it for almost nothing to a US billionaire, who hangs out with people like the Koch Brothers. Now this year, this company asked for subsidization by the government. When they didn’t get it, they shut the port down; Canada’s only deep water arctic seaport.

The solution is obvious; Nationalize the Port.

Work with First Nations and Northern Communities to build a future. But what’s been the response from the Federal Liberals? Not only have they not moved forward to renationalize, but they are embarking on an unprecedented privatization plan for Transportation Infrastructure across our country.

So I think its time in this country, that we start saying: You Privatize it, We nationalize it. “You deregulate it, we regulate it. You bring in unfair trade deals, we bring in fair trade deals.

And increasingly I think we have to say something else. One of the leading Black Lives Matters activists in Toronto, Hashim Yussuf, said at our national forum on precarious work, he shared a chant that Black Lives Matter put out. That talked about how we all need to recognize

"The system isn’t broken, it was built this way”.

What we need in this country is a major change to that system. It starts with recognizing that one of the main reasons we have growing inequality; the reason that indigenous people live in third world living conditions; the reason that discrimination and division is still present; the reason women are still unequal; the reason millennials are faced with precarious employment and high student debt is because of a system that is failing all of us.

We must send a message that there is a better way.

The team realizes that Lance is different even if he doesn’t act like it. What will happen when they finally confront him?

Chapter 6: Well… Shit.

Lance did wake up eventually the next day, in the afternoon. He was in a daze from sleeping so much and walked out of his room in his pajamas, without his robe and casually walked into the kitchen. His arms completely exposed, shirt hanging low on his back. Hunk, Shiro and Keith were gathered in some sort of weird meeting but Lance paid not mind. He just moved to get something to drink, still not hungry.

He didn’t notice Hunk, Shiro and Keith staring at him, and they had stopped talking. They stared at the scars so white and sticking out against his skin. They weren’t used to it yet. But Lance moved the same as always, as if they didn’t bother him. Lance grabbed some water before turning to see them all staring at him. Great. He just drank water, looking back without blinking.

“Hey, I know I’m mesmerizing but there really is no reason to stare.” Lance said with a smirk.

Shiro and Keith groaned together and Hunk rolled his eyes but they all smiled, all but forgetting about the scars. Hunk moved into the kitchen to Lance’s side, putting a hand on his shoulder.

“Hey you’ve slept for a long time, hungry?” Hunk asked already moving to prepare something.

Lance took a sip of water, “Honestly I’m not hungry at all, so don’t bother. I’ll just wait till dinner.” Lance said.

Hunk looked at him in concern, “Dude, how? You had like five bites of food yesterday, like twenty-four hours ago, how are you not hungry?” Hunk asked.

Lance shrugged, “I don’t know. I didn’t really eat on Lotor’s ship either so maybe it’ll just take a bit to get back in the routine. Don’t worry about it.” Lance said draining his glass and placing it on the table.

Shiro came closer to him, “Why don’t you talk to Allura? Let her know. She might have to say something to you.” Shiro said cryptically.

Lance looked at him, then he looked past him at the corner of the room and then back to Shiro again, “Oh the quintessence thing right? She caught me yesterday before I went to bed and told me. I think her theory is right, so we just have to wait and see huh?” Lance said, “Don’t worry about too much, I’m going to take a shower.” Lance said before leaving.

Shiro, Keith and Hunk were left in the kitchen staring at the spot that Lance left.

“Is he really okay?” Keith asked, “He seems too casual.” He said.

Hunk nodded, “Yeah maybe, I think a lot of things have changed so maybe he’s just trying to be like he was before, you know?” He said.

“Yeah let’s just give him time.” Shiro said, “He’ll come to us when he’s ready.” He said.

Hunk looked at Shiro doubtfully and thought that there was a lot that Shiro had to learn about Lance.

And time is what they gave Lance and plenty of it. First Lance trained by himself to build up his strength. He did a lot of leg and arm exercises, he had lost some muscle during his capture. Next he worked on combat training sort of, but focusing more on getting used to one eye instead of two. Keith watched as the gladiator dove towards Lance’s left side, tapping Lance meant a point was lost. At first Lance struggled. He had to take frequent breaks to get focused again, most of the time he’d just stare off into a certain corner and then turn around and try again.

After several days Lance became better, a lot better. He would use sound to his advantage, his hearing getting better to make up for his lack of sight. One day Keith approached him as Lance looked over the combat options.

Lance’s eyes were lit in the blue glow of the screen. His scars were exposed, just in his casual workout clothes rather than his armor. Keith was getting used to it.

“Hey,” Keith said, causing Lance to turn, “You’re really improving quickly. Soon you’ll be back with the group trainings!” Keith slapped a hand on Lance’s back. Lance flinched but just barely. Keith backed off.

“Sorry.” Keith said sheepishly.

“No, no you’re fine! Don’t worry, it’s just…” Lance looked at the corner past Keith shoulder, eyes flicking back to Keith, “I’m not used to how it feels yet. Actually the skin is so rough it feels more like pressure. It’s just weird.” He laughed absently scratching his neck.

Lance turned back to the screen, “The training is going well, but I can’t join you guys just yet. A night or two will do it though. Although I still need to practice my shooting.” He smiled at Keith.

“Nights? I thought you hate practicing at night, you know, beauty sleep.” Said Keith.

Lance looked at him surprised before his eyes flicked back to the corner and back to Keith again. Keith was about to ask what was over there but was interrupted.

“Oh I don’t… sleep much anymore.” Lance stated.

Keith stood there shocked, “What? What do you mean?” He asked concerned.

Lance put up his hands moving them in front of him.

“I mean I sleep, just not as much. And it’s not what you think, not nightmares or insomnia, just I don’t need it. I wake up an hour or two later after falling asleep and I feel energized like a good night’s sleep. I told Allura, we think it’s the quintessence. This might be a permanent thing, but we don’t know yet.” He let his hands down, “But with the extra time I’ve been training, just catching up, you know?”

“Why didn’t you say anything?” Keith asked, “Maybe we could help…” He said, trailing off.

“Help? Why? There’s nothing you or the rest of the team can do. It’s not important. Plus it’s not like it’s affecting me in a bad way, it’s just a change.” Lance said.

Keith gave him a look and Lance went to him putting a hand on Keith’s shoulder.

“Honestly, dude don’t worry about it. You’ll get wrinkles and your complexion will get worse. It’ll already pretty bad.” Lance said with mock concern, laughing as Keith flicked his hand away, smiling himself.

“Yeah sure, is that a mullet growing out of the back of your head?” Keith questioned.

Lance’s hand flew to the back of his neck.

Don’t even kid about that, Keith. I would rather DIE than have a mullet. Oh my god who has scissors?!” Lance said running out of the room, Keith laughing.

Shiro entered the lounge where Lance and Pidge were sitting together with their heads hunch over something. They were fiddling with one of Pidge’s projects. Lance was trying to give her suggestions.

“Why don’t you put it here?” Lance suggested pointing to some port.

“I don’t think it’ll fit in there.” Pidge said, unsure.

“Nah it will, I can tell. Here give it.” Lance offered his scarred hand.

Pidge reluctantly handed the tiny piece of tech over, Shiro watching with interest.

Lance took the little rectangle and gently placed it into the slot and pushing just enough to click it in. Pidge looked at her screen and made a triumphant yell, slapping Lance’s already raised hand in a high five.

“Lance I love you!” Pidge said looking at her computer intently as tons and tons of alien code came onto the screen.

“That’s sweet Pidge, but you’re too young for me. You’re like jail bait.” Lance said with a smirk receiving a light punch in the shoulder from Pidge.

“Oh Pidge please be gentle!” Lance mock shouted.

“Oh my god would you shut up.” She said with no heat.

Lance laughed. He looked passed Pidge staring at something, his face falling. Pidge didn’t notice but Shiro did. Lance went a little pale, Shiro took a step forward and Lance’s head snapped in his direction. He looked like a deer in headlights, eyes wide. He blinked looking at Shiro, and Shiro stared back. He didn’t say anything. He felt like he saw something he wasn’t supposed to.

Lance’s face changed in an instant, the smile was back, and his eyes had no hint of any of the emotion just a moment ago. He hid it well but Shiro still saw.

“Pidge, Shiro’s here. Why don’t you tell him all about how I just saved your project?” Lance suggested, getting up and offering the spot to Shiro.

“Yeah, Shiro, this is seriously so cool! I mean Lance didn’t save it but he did help…” Her words washed over Shiro as he watched out of the corner of his eye, and Lance practically ran out of the room.

Hunk came to the hangar to do some modifications to the yellow lion when he saw Lance. He was in front of Blue leaning his head against her leg, eyes closed. Hunk watched.

Lance was still but he seemed to glow with a blue light that Hunk was familiar with. But soon it was over and Lance looked up at his lion with a smile.

“I know and I will, when I’m ready.” He said, giving her leg a gentle pat before turning around and running directly into Hunk. Lance blinked.

“Oh hey!” Lance said.

“Hey, what did you do just now? You like glowed blue a little bit!” Hunk said fascinated.

Lance blinked confused, “What? I glowed? Seriously?” Then he smiled, “I didn’t know that but that’s pretty damn cool!” Lance said.

“Yeah it was, but what were you doing?” Hunk asked.

Lance shrugged, “I was just talking to Blue that’s all.” Lance said.

Hunk nodded, “Like the image thing that the lions do?” Hunk asked.

Lance shook his head, “No like with words, through the bond I hear her voice. She speaks English and Spanish so we were chatting but like in our heads.” Lance said.

Hunk stood stunned.

“WHAT?! You can DO that?” Hunk practically shouted.

Lance leaned back from Hunk intensity, “Uh yeah man, to be honest I kind didn’t realize that you couldn’t.” Lance said

“Of course I can’t! Oh my god that’s so cool! I can’t wait to do that with Yellow!” Hunk said excitedly.

Lance smiled, “Yeah it’s pretty cool!” he said.

Hunk spent the next several hours before dinner asking Lance a thousand questions which Lance answered to the best of his ability but Hunk knew that he was thankful when dinner was called.

What happened in the room with Pidge did not happen around Shiro again. Lance seemed to be careful, he avoided being alone with Shiro at every turn. But Shiro still thought that Lance would come to him when he was ready.

Lance joined regular training again with the rest of the team. He had improved greatly. He struggled with the trust exercises like the invisible maze but excelled with protection exercises and combat.

They stood in a circle backs to one another as they had many times before. They brought up they’re shields protecting one another from lasers. Lance protected everyone with everything he had. In fact, no one fell through the floor. They made it through the whole training without losing anyone. It was the first time they did that.

Shiro clapped Lance on the back, “That was amazing Lance, that’s the first time we’ve made it through that training! Great job.” He smiled.

Lance looked a little shocked but he smiled, “Thanks, Shiro.” He said shyly.

Shiro looked at everyone, “That was some great teamwork! Let’s keep it up, take a shower and turn in for the night.” He said.

Everyone dispersed. Shiro watched as Lance left with Hunk chatting like he normally did. Maybe what Shiro had seen was just a fluke, caught Lance at a bad moment. But he wondered what could possibly have made him look so scared. But he put it aside, Lance would come to him when he was ready, he was sure.

It wasn’t until later that night that Shiro’s concerns grew worse. Shiro woke up from a nightmare he couldn’t remember, it happened from time to time but he woke up earlier than he normally did. It was still four hours until everyone else would wake up. So he decided he’d go for some light exercise, maybe he would be able to go back to sleep.

Shiro made his way to the training deck. When he got closer he heard something, someone talking. Lance talking. At first he thought Lance was up late with someone else, he had been training late in the night and he knew that Keith joined him when he couldn’t sleep.

But it was just Lance’s voice, shouting words that Shiro couldn’t make out. Shiro made it to the door and it automatically opened.

“SHUT UP!” Lance shouted, “¡CÁLLATE!” Lance shouted. And the sound of something crashing to the floor.

Shiro saw Lance in the middle of the training floor, gladiator robot with a sizeable hole from Lance’s bayard, which hung loosely at his side. Lance turned out the sound of the door and he had the same look as before. Blue eyes wide with horror, face pale and breathing hard. His hand was shaking. He looked so scared.

Shiro took a step forward and Lance instinctively took a step back. So Shiro just stayed where he was.

“Lance…” Shiro began raising a hand.

“NO. Don’t.” Lance said sternly.

“What? Lance I just want…” Shiro began again.

“NO. No no no no. Please don’t. Please pretend you didn’t see this. Just this once.” Lance asked desperately. He looked so scared, his bayard was gone and he wiped a hand across his mouth. Then before Shiro could reply Lance ran out, and Shiro could only watch his back disappear into the hallway.

This couldn’t go on any longer, Shiro knew that. But he couldn’t bring himself to confront Lance by himself. But Shiro decided, no more secrets. He was resolved.

So when Lance was finished eating and about to leave Shiro said it. Maybe now wasn’t the best time but it had to happen.

“Lance, wait a sec.” Shiro said, Lance stopped looking at Shiro curiously.

“We need to talk about what happened last night and what has been happening to you.” Shiro said as gently as he could.

Lance grew pale after he said those words.

“What are you talking about Shiro? I’m fine.” Lance said attempting to smile.

“No, you’re not. Let’s talk about it.” Shiro said.

Lance’s eyes flicked nervously because now everyone was staring at him, his eyes kept looking at the corner of the room. Shiro turned slightly to look in the direction, Lance’s eyes grew even bigger and he forced himself to look at the table. Shiro knew nothing was in the corner but what did Lance keep looking at? He turned his attention back to Lance.

“Lance, why do you keep looking at the corner? What happened last night at the training deck?” Shiro asked.

Lance looked at Shiro, shocked. He looked betrayed. He opened his mouth but closed it again and he just shook his head, smile gone now.

They were all getting worried now. Hunk spoke up.

“Buddy, come on just tell us. You’re safe here.” Hunk said.

Lance’s head snapped to look at Hunk and then look passed him, at something the rest of them couldn’t see. He continued to shake his head, breath growing quick. He got up, ready to bolt but Shiro grabbed his arm. Lance looked at the hand and tried to shake it off.

“Lance please.” Shiro begged.

“No. Stop, let me go.” Lance said sternly.

“Lance.” Keith said sounding stubborn, “Come on man just tell us-” But he was cut off.

Lance turned his head suddenly eyes full of rage and pure terror. His voice came out as a scream and before Lance could stop the words were falling out of his mouth. All the emotion, everything he had suppressed came out and he couldn’t stop it.

“OH GOD HERE COMES PERFECT FUCKING KEITH! I’M SURE IF IT’S KEITH THEN HE CAN FIX IT! CAN’T YOU ALL JUST LEAVE ME ALONE?!” Lance looked at Keith with all the rage that had been suppressed, the emotion Lance tried to get rid of. Keith looked back at him, shocked like he’d been slapped. Lance didn’t care.

Lance shook his head furiously and angry tears were beginning to slide down his face. But Shiro refused to loosen his grip so he had to stand there, confessing every warped thought in his brain.

“IT SEEMS THAT SHIRO HAS MISTAKEN ME FOR YOU, KEITH! CAUSE THERE’S NO WAY IN FUCKING HELL THAT HE OR ANY OF YOU WOULD BE REMOTELY WORRIED ABOUT ME! ONLY AFTER I GET BUSTED UP DO YOU FINALLY CARE! ONLY AFTER I’M GOING HALF INSANE DO YOU FINALLY FUCKING NOTICE! I’M SO GAD DAMN SICK OF IT! AND DON’T ACT FUCKING SURPRISED!” Lance turned to the group, actually speaking to them.

Allura’s eyes were wide just staring at Lance. Coran’s mouth was a hard line and his face was pale with concern. Pidge just stared at Lance, looking scared. Hunk just looked at him with a sad expression. Keith still looked shocked. Shiro’s face was pale and he looked like he regretted ever making Lance talk. Good, he should. Again Lance tried to stop but was already too late, no turning back now.

“YOU’RE ALL SO TALENTED AND SMART AND GREAT AND I’M JUST SOME CHEAP ASS REPLACEMENT FOR SOMEONE YOU ACTUALLY DESERVE. YOU DESERVE SOMEONE BETTER THAN ME AND I KNOW THAT! I’M NOT IMPORTANT OR SPECIAL OR ANYTHING! SO WHY DON’T WE GO BACK TO THE WAY WE WERE BEFORE HUH? WHEN YOU’D ALL IGNORED ME AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP GIVING ME THAT GOD DAMN LOOK!” Lance shouted and screamed, they all looked at him with such concern he couldn’t believe it, “QUIT ACTING LIKE YOU ALL GIVE A DAMN! I KNOW YOU DON’T! TELL ME TO SHUT UP, TELL ME TO FOCUS, ORDER ME AROUND AND IGNORE ME! IT’S EASIER THAT WAY! JUST PLEASE STOP PLAYING THIS GAME! IT MAKES ME CONFUSED! JUST STOP!”

There was an abrupt silence, everyone was too stunned to reply or move or even blink. They just stared at Lance with horror. He hated that look, the way they kept looking at him and staring at him. The way they talked to him with pity, the way they walked on egg shells around him, the way they laughed extra loud at his jokes. He wasn’t a broken person but they kept treating like one and he hated it. Why would they act like they care when they never did before?

Lance knew that part of this was due to the hallucinations of Lotor that he still saw, he never really went away. Always standing in a corner reminding Lance of his time in the ship and the thoughts that he tried not to think about. Lotor would whisper in his head, telling him that the team didn’t care, they found him useless, they were acting, and they really hated him. The list could go on forever. But Lotor’s whispers were constant and only in the few hours that Lance slept was he actually free of those thoughts. It was too much, it was all too much.

But Lance knew it was in his head and that these thoughts were his own. He didn’t want to hurt them, they were his team they didn’t deserve it. He loved them. But Lance felt he wasn’t a part of it. Always on the outside looking in but never inside, never.

Lance turned to Shiro who had grown pale at his words, still in shock, “Is that what you wanted to know, huh Shiro? Well congratulations now you fucking know. Let go.” Lance’s voice was low, only speaking to Shiro.

The silence was back. But Shiro’s grip finally loosened and Lance ripped his arm free, realizing what he had done. He said it. He had said everything and now they know. The rage that had taken him over abruptly left and he felt only fear. If they didn’t hate him before, they hated him now. He blanched covering his mouth, backing up and knocking over his chair.

“Lo siento.” Lance said in a whisper before he turned around and ran out of the room as fast as his legs could carry him.

cade-barricade  asked:

Hello! I've got a question based on IDW continuity. A lot of people are calling Soundwave as a 'Decepticon mama' or 'Sound-dad', and of course, I kinda understand the reason for it. However, for example, in Ex-rid or OP, I've noticed that Rumble and Frenzy are becoming more independent, also they have been kinda forced to become the cassettes, so the question is: - what does these guys really think about SW; do they CARE about him? The similar question apply to him too. Thank you!

Ah, such interpretations of Soundwave’s relationship with his cassettes go all the way back to G1! As soon as he petted Ravage that one time, that was it!

To answer such a question about IDW, our first port of call must surely be this image from All Hail Megatron, in which Soundwave howls in rage and despair over a wounded Rumble:

Also, here’s Frenzy, from the Bumblebee mini-series, full-on losing his marbles after being separated from Soundwave.

(This was when they were playing Frenzy as dangerously mentally unstable, a depiction of the character that originated in All Hail Megatron, but which has since been forgotten, mmmaybe for the best.)

Taken together, these would certainly indicate that they share a similar link with Soundwave that we’ve seen his other cassettes do, and that Soundwave looks on them with as much fondness as the others.

But it does feel a little like these past instances have been… let’s say “deliberately forgotten,” as they don’t mesh so well with the wider continuity’s handling of Soundwave’s relationship with his various cassettes. In the years since AHM and Bumblebee’s publication, Robots in Disguise established that Soundwave met Ravage, Laserbeak, and Buzzsaw long ago, and they took care of him when he was destitute, unable to control his mind-reading powers.

(This always makes me a smile a little when I hear Soundwave referred to as being “fatherly” to his cassettes; if anything, in IDW, it seems like Ravage was the one who was “father” to Soundwave in the early days!)

But even before the above stories were written, Megatron Origin had depicted Rumble and Frenzy as workers in the mines with Megatron, who only got partnered up with Soundwave and re-engineered to transform to fit inside his chest as part of an undercover mission, so they could hide inside him to ambush the Senate. As you note, they weren’t really happy about it and tried to argue their way out of it, until Megatron… uh, convinced them to see things his way:

Additionally, there’s never been any evidence that Rumble and Frenzy went with Soundwave to Earth in the 1980s like Laserbeak and Ravage did, so they could have spent several decades off doing their own thing without him.

It’s not particularly illogical, then, to think that their relationship with Soundwave would be quite a bit different from the animal-cassettes, purely as a result of personal circumstances and shared experiences (or a lack thereof). But that’s not to say they don’t LIKE one another - in addition to Soundwave’s display of emotion above, the two were quick to come to Soundwave’s aid when the other Decepticons turned on him soon after their exile from Iacon:

But later, they were also willing to go behind his back and hunt humans with Galvatron, so they’re not absolutely bound to him. In fact, Laserbeak and Buzzsaw went on that mission, too! Tsk, you wouldn’t get that kind of trouble out of Ravage!

Chemo update

I had my first check-up since finishing chemotherapy! My levels are good still, and I only had minor pain where the cancer was located for about… hmm, maybe a week or two after I’d finished.

I wanna think it was just residual stuff. Dunno, I’m not a doctor, hueheuhe. But I have my next check-up in July, followed by a scan to make sure I’m fully in remission. Then I’ll have the port taken out of my chest! @w@ Also, I graduate from school this semester, so I’ll be pretty busy for a few more weeks.

I hope to either open a giveaway or commissions or something soon! What do you think?

Highlights from the FBG Reddit AMA (02/03/2017)

Here are some highlights from today’s FBG Reddit AMA. If any more questions are answered tomorrow I will add to this post!

  • Elections will come back for Fallen London this year too! (x)
  • The Mr Eaten Storyline won’t be specifically addressed in SSkies but “However, there are some practices, rites, and mysteries in Sunless Skies that followers of the Mr Eaten story will find resonant. For now, we’ll just say that the Masters weren’t the first beings to come up with the idea of throwing their enemies into wells…” (x)
  • Not ruling out DLCs for SSkies (x)
  • “The Martyr-King’s Cup? Nothing to worry over; it is just the folly of those who’ve read so many books their brains have all dried up. Lunatic dreamers who speak in silly thee’s and thou’s and oblige themselves to esoteric codes, because they think it brings them closer to some cosmic truth, some greater glory.” (x
  • The plan is to not have a logbook at all and have the flavor text for the locations appear on screen, similar to the trailers (x)
  • “I’ve just started writing one of our ports. I hope you lot like bees. (And if you don’t, all the better!)” (x)
  • “Parabola is not welcome in the Judgements’ sight. Parabola is the realm of Is-Not. The heavens are the arbiters of what Is. Yes, we will be learning more about [Parabola].” (x
  • “In Sunless Skies we’ll meet the Scorn-Flukes, who grieve for lost Axile.” (x)
  • “Can confirm devils in Sunless Skies. Look for a port called Carillon” (x)
  • [on the dragons reacting to the Judgements’ murders with military force] “You will no doubt be completely unsurprised to hear that it’s rather more complicated than that. The few snippets we’ve learned about the ‘dragons’ have all been depicted from very specific points of view. It’s not the whole story.” (x)
  • “(We have certain priorities when inventing new Correspondence sigils, which we do sparingly. Every one has to be sound like it can refer to two different specific things, which I won’t elaborate on because spoilers)” (x)
  • “We’ll be on Windows, Mac and Linux for full launch in 2018.” (x)

  • “When players start a new game, we’d like to give them several options to customise their game to create a level and type of challenge that’s right for them. If fine motor control challenges are not really your thing (or just something you happen to be bad at), you should be able to adjust the degree of auto-aim, so that your projectiles automatically arc towards their targets.” (x)
  • “At present, I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of a train whistle.” (x)
  • More options to interact with neutral vessels other than fighting (x)

So I accidentally romanced Reyes in ME:A …

…and now I feel so much regret that I need to romance him in my New Game + >_<’ Jaal is sweet but Reyes….oh my god. @charliewolffie you totally know what I mean, right?

Every interaction I had with him afterwards had him constantly smiling at me sadly and it stung.

Guys…I think I just have a thing for suave criminals <8/?!

Sunday chain #27

1. It was my mother who first discovered the fuel leak. Or at least, that’s what we thought it was then. My grandmother, who was the last of us to have set foot on Earth, had died the month before. We had gathered in the laundry atrium, which was the largest open space without ongoing maintenance work, and made such tribute as we could: this is one of the first things I remember. My mother said it felt like a new era, like we were on our own. Although of course we had been out of radio contact with Earth for many years by then. And then, so soon after: the fuel numbers didn’t quite add up. The guardian angels of the old world gone, and we were on our own. But we had excess fuel against unplanned contingencies. It was the slowest of slow leaks. No big deal.

2. There is another thing that is odd about the path of the ship: sometimes it makes corrections that we did not tell it to make. Not often, but sometimes. I wish I could say that I was the one who discovered this, but I think it was Grace Cao who first noticed it. The ship does have a mechanism for external course corrections. It was designed for two circumstances: to retrieve the ship in the case of the crew becoming somehow disabled at launch, and at the fabled other end: for our children’s children’s children to be guided into port on the new worlds by the settlers who had landed before them. It uses a separate communications channel: minimal data and supposedly programmable across huge distances. But it is entirely possible that it is buggy. Still, the end point of our journey is the system that it always was. Also, hopefully, no big deal.

3. Over the years, we have gone from thinking of the ship as a complex but explicable machine to thinking of it as a mysterious engine that we cannot quite control. Too much not quite lining up. Maintenance is turning into ritual. The Machine is turning up in the old stories from Earth. It keeps us alive but it can punish us. It is capricious and sometimes angry. So we were ready for the latest development, I suppose. Too ready: there is so me scandal down in engineering with Peter and the Adeosun wards, and I have heard people say, joking-not-joking, that our fuel problems are down to moral failing.

4. Nevertheless, I think the changes we now see are more likely to belong in the domain of the fuel leak. And this time they are worrying. If we sustain this level of fuel depletion to our destination, we will be out of reserves. Too many things to go wrong. There has been an uptick in the rate of fuel loss, and no obvious reason for it. I sent Xuebing and Grace Cao out on a spacewalk to inspect the fuel tanks. It has been a long time since since anyone went on spacewalk. We had to fire up the fabricator to print a new seal for the second suit. But they have not found anything external.

5. The way it fluctuates is curious. I am not sure that we are looking at this the right way.

6. Of course, the other option is that it is something in our course correction. We have certainly not made any deviation in heading for years, intentionally or unintentionally. It cannot be that. Could it be speed correction? We are at the speed we would expect to be at, at this point in the journey. But if were to deviate from this, the ship would automatically intervene to put us back. It would use fuel. But why would it need to? We are in deep space. We are as alone as any humans have ever been. There is nothing here to slow us down.

7. Some further time has passed. Grace Sharma has been plotting the anomaly. But I fear now that we are already beyond the point where the mission is lost. We will not be able to correct at the other end. Perhaps when we get there we can send the settlers a distress call. Perhaps they can rescue us somehow.

8. The crew at the bridge all know it now, but for the while we have not told the others. Maybe there is some way out. If only we knew what was happening! It is hard to extract the information, but with Bernard-Rose and Grace’s help I think we have it confirmed: the engines are running at a higher rate than they should for what is supposed to be primarily a power-generation role  On a whim, I tried assuming the missing fuel had gone into speed correction. What could the forces on the ship have been to cause that? And out came the plot, like a dream, like a nightmare. Because this was a curve that I had seen before.

9. The Wang-Fernstell curve. Physics class. One of a range of competitors to the standard model of quantum gravity. A fringe idea, really. In any case not experimentally confirmable on the small scales available in the solar system. But on a long voyage across deep space: yes, absolutely confirmable. You would observe a slow deceleration over time, oscillating in a distinctive way, increasing in magnitude. Or, if you had a ship that corrected for that sort of thing, you would gradually run out of fuel. And then stop. In deep space. So it seems we have made an incredibly important discovery about the structure of the Universe. And it seems that we will never be able to tell anyone about it. It seems that we are doomed.

10. I have told the others. The ship is very quiet. I cannot stop thinking of all the ships that went before us, of all the ships that will come after. Did they all make this discovery, once they were beyond hope of rescue? Are they all lost? Is the Earth even now churning out new ships to drift, lifeless, into the void, and pinning all its future hopes on them? We have turned off the speed correction in the hope of saving fuel for power, though we will be able to eke a tiny amount out of the solar panels when that fails. But now, of course, the ship has started making course corrections again, ones that we cannot override. Of course. I have asked Peter to move up to the kitchen hold. It is not at all clear that he is safe.

11. Another correction. We are going to run out of fuel. We are coming towards our final resting place.

12. We are coming towards our final resting place. And there is something there. Something gleaming in the starlight up ahead. It is hard to make out. A complex, huge, many-looped grey thing, studded across with tiny lights.

13. It is the ships. It is the other ships. Thousands and thousands of them, all linked up: something between a space station and a planet. We are within radio range of it now. And they have been calling us! We are to dock at the nearmost point. They called us from an atrium full of trees. Trees! I have never seen such a thing. But why not use some of the seeds now, whilst they lie becalmed? And maybe it will not be forever. They say there may be something they can make of the new physics, some way to make these odd forces work for us. But for now I am just marvelling at the thing they have made. It has states. There are parts of it where the languages are diverging. There are parts of it that worship the myth of the machine. We will all have to choose where to live and what to work on. So much to do, to keep it alive!

14. But one thing still to do now: use the remaining fuel to power up the long-range transmitter. We need to send the requisite course corrections to the next ship down the line.

Captain James ‘Bucky’ Barnes was a peculiar man, how he sailed the seas for most of his 27 years. He was born at sea, he would most likely die at sea. All pirates, including those in the farthest corners of the maps, had heard of the infamous Captain. You? You were the governor’s daughter, secretly hoping to be taken out to seas and to be set free.

~

“Please- Sir I’ll do anything, please just let me come with you.” You hoped he wouldn’t turn out too bad if he let you stay, but if he didn’t…

“Well, miss Y/L/N, welcome aboard the St. Brooklyn…”

~

Tell me, sweetheart… Why would a rich and beautiful girl like you, run away from a place like Port Royal, hm?” Bucky asked, you and him both were sitting in the Captain’s cabin, it was cosy, full of gold and silver alike, lavish furniture- this man was definitely not like most of the other pirates that your father had told you about; poor, dirty, unhygienic.

You studied him for a moment, “I, er, I have been stuck in Port Royal since I was a babe, I haven’t gone further than 2 nautical miles outside the border, Sir, I have a thirst for freedom and to put it quite frankly, your boat called to me.” You fiddled with your fingers as you awaited his reply.

First of all, it is not a boat, my dear, secondly… there are plenty other ‘boats’ in that harbour-

Don’t ask me why I didn’t board the others- I would be… easily recognised. Everyone in Port Royal knows who I am, my friend Peter will be the only one to- wait… What did you do to the letter?

Bucky huffed. “What do you think I did with the blasted letter? I’m a wanted man. I’m not becoming wanted for kidnapping-

I’m 19- almost 20, well over a year over the legal I’m-allowed-to-make-my-own-decisions age, Sir, I assure you it won’t be kidnapping if I am the one who boarded your ship on my own will.” Bucky gave you a skeptical look then rolled his eyes.

As someone who had come across many a stupid person, he didn’t think you would be the type to run away- you had a perfect life- of course, he wasn’t in your boots, but you seemed intelligent, healthy, surrounded by protection and you most likely lived in a luxury mansion. What could possibly be wrong with your life?

Alas, he didn’t know a thing.

The need to be away from your home was clawing at your chest and it was annoying you to the point where you had tried to escape multiple times, only to be caught by your handmaiden- you had kept making up excuses to cover yourself.

Your father paid little to no attention to you once you had turned 18, he had arranged a marriage for you with Commodore Zemo, a man of fortune and wealth, he was 15 years your senior, though that was normal for any arranged marriage. The man was a weird one, to say the least.

If you’re going to stay on my ship, you’re going to have to know the way of the seas. You can’t just sit around and do nothing, as you would probably do back at Port Royal, you are the Governor’s daughter, after all.” There is a knock at the door, Bucky shouts a 'yes?’ and a handsome man with ebony hair and dark skin enters.

Y/N, this is my first mate, Sam Wilson, Sam… this is the stowaway I had to find.” You looked between both of them and shook Sam’s hand, he adorned a smile so sweet, but he had a firm grip to say the least.

Sam smiled and said a quiet hello. “Captain, we’re heading into rough waters, orders?

Hoist the sails, gain speed, it can’t be too bad,” Bucky smiled. “If anything gets a little rusty, we have Wanda.

Aye Cap.” Sam exited the cabin, as the door shut you could hear him yelling orders, and the scurrying of feet died down.

What is a ‘Wanda’, Sir?

Ha ha, Wanda is a witch we have onboard, a good friend of mine actually, ah, don’t look like that! She helps us keep the ship from capsizing when we head into the rough water.” Bucky grinned, he enjoyed seeing such a beautiful girl squirm hearing the word ‘witch’.

You had never been one to believe in magic, your father told you stories when he came back from his voyages to Tortuga, Brazil, Egypt, he would go for so long. You had skimmed the room once more to find a large globe in the corner.

May I?” you questioned, timidly. Bucky nodded in response, he furrowed his brow as your fingers danced along the curvature of the three-dimensional atlas, you had only come into contact with one of these in your 19 years, a much smaller one in your father’s office.

Tell me, Y/N, how educated are you on the modern charts?” You whipped your head around to see the cocky man leaning back in his chair, you could feel him eyeing you up and down as if he could read your body language. “I don’t have a Sea Artist, he pissed off a siren on the coast of Portugal, fell for their trap, he was a good man, though he never learned how to cut back on the humour when something serious was going on. Any chance you could help me out and be what I need most, and maybe more?

Sir, as a woman growing up with a Governor as a father, I have studied the maps since I was able to read and write. I know how to navigate throughout the entire world but-” You were cut off quickly when Bucky gave you a confused glare.

He intimidated you, only slightly, his tall manner and dark looks were different than the men you had encountered before. If you had to compare between you both, you would be the lamb and he the lion. His jaw was sharp and defined, as if carved by the sharpest of swords. His hair fell in bronze and brunette tresses across his forehead and you could swear you could see red in his cheeks, most likely sun stained from being at seas for so many years. It contrasted against his olive skin.

In all your mature years you had been exposed to drunken, ugly miscreants, he was by far the most beautiful man you had ever laid eyes upon, and you felt an alien sensation fluttering in your lower part of your stomach as he lifted from his chair, in that moment you had yet to be exposed to the ways of the world, you knew what intercourse was, you had been shown plenty of scientific diagrams, though you had no idea what this pleasant feeling was.

~

As Bucky’s legs carried him closer to the damsel in his cabin, he could smell a change in the air; it was you, you see Bucky was not just any normal human being; he could feel and know what anyone else was feeling, a good trait to have as a pirate. He could feel the blush spread from your bust to the tips of your ears, he could feel your heart fluttering behind your ribs as he neared you. As he spoke his breath gently whisped across your forehead.

Yet.. an innocent soul like you has never traveled the seas? Oh, darling, you will be of great use to me, I will show you the world beyond this one, just you wait.

~

A/N. So! Part 2, I hope everyone likes it, and enjoys reading it. Like i said this fic is gonna be a slow burn on both ends. Bucky is intrigued by Y/N, he knows she is an innocent soul looking for new things so HES GONNA GIVE EM TO HER AYEEEE

Holy freak Ranpo can fight. That shocked me.

Desperate times calls for desperate measures. But to me, it is hardly surprising. Some of the most powerful/dangerous ones are those who don’t only rely on their abilities; Dazai comes to mind first and foremost. He can keep up with Chuuya in a one-on-one, but in a longer fight he would’ve been wrecked. He relies on exploiting his opponent’s weaknesses and turning their strengths against them, all the while keeping ability users at bay thanks to his nullification ability. This arc’s villain has Fyodor, who so far has been more effective than Fitzgerald and the Guild in spreading a sense of dread and panic to both ADA and Port Mafia by taking both of their leaders out of commission and dealing them bad cards which they have no choice but to accept.

Therefore, it wasn’t a shock to me that Ranpo would resort to using all resources available to him (coughPoecough) to ensure that the most dangerous in the mafia would be unable to support his team while the other members are engaging them in battle. He had mapped out a plan and determined that he would be much more useful as bait… though I also think this could be a set-up to talk to Chuuya and plan something to counterattack against Fyodor. In that way, it’ll be interesting to see how Chuuya would respond to someone who can be as manipulative and cunning as Dazai if he chooses to be. (Not that I think Ranpo isn’t cunning already, but he never shows this side of him because he prefers to make the plans and let the others follow what he tells them to the letter. Poe was an exemption because he got an open letter challenging him, that’s all.) If I have to say it, I’m glad this “battle” happened because it is neither the mindless all-out DBZ-fashion fights without tactics nor an asspull out of nowhere. It also showcases how much of a threat Ranpo could be once the switch is off, just like Tanizaki. Unfortunately, this means having to portray Chuuya and the rest of the mafia as incompetent brutes yet again though that’s something I would probably talk about at a later time.

So angaran don’t have biotics and the kett have no clue what those are. So the first time they see this human pathfinder, they are on opposite sides of the battlefield and then…then all you see is this glowing streak and suddenly you get forcibly crashed into with devastating force…

How aren’t they not going wtf and running away? That shit would be terrifying. Vanguards are described as terrifying by their own species. Why don’t more characters comment about you if you are a biotic?

Here you have this sassy little cinnamon roll that can very well fuck your shit up.

Kadara port is a cease fire zone, think I need a gun to destroy you?

And Reyes seeing Ryder charge or use nova for the first time during one of their fights together.

Any class really. I wish more characters commented on which profile you tended to use, be it vanguard, infiltrator, engineer, what have you.

Fic:
Your Dearest

Author: Billowsandbreeze

Rating: T for flirting

Pairing: Jaal Ama Darav x Sierra Ryder

Summary: Sierra receives an email from Jaal and feelings are laid bare.

Author’s Notes: I wanted to try to capture that gut-clenching, excited, nervous moment right when a flirting relationship is about to take that next step. Jaal’s emails were so good at inducing that feeling. So, hopefully I did it justice.

(Spoilers for Jaal’s emails. I included the full text of one in this.)

“Good morning, Pathfinder.”

Groaning, Sierra throws an arm across her face as the cabin lights brighten too soon against the back of her lids.

She grumbles beneath her breath and rolls into her pillow. “You don’t have to do that as soon as you feel me wake up, SAM. Give me at least five minutes to get my bearings.”

“Noted, Pathfinder.” There’s a momentary pause. “You have unread email at your terminal.”

Taking in a deep breath, Sierra blinks rapidly, trying to erase the fatigue and sleep from her eyes. SAM clearly isn’t going to let her stay in bed any longer, and he’s right to do so. The display on her nightstand tells her they’re almost to Kadara. So, with another groan, she sits up.

“Okay,” she says in a rushing exhale and gets to her feet. She runs a hand through her hair and makes her way to the terminal. Email first, then coffee, and then Kadara Port.

The messages are routine—Tann reminding her of their position on the outlaws, a colonist on Eos asking for help, Lexi sending her diagrams of yoga poses to help with her stress—but one toward the bottom catches her eye.

A communication from your friend Jaal
