TODAY I VISITED THE NAOKI URASAWA EXHIBITION IN TOKYO AND I JUST
Where do I even start???
Before I even stepped inside the venue I was greeted by the kids from 20th Century Boys on the automatic door (you’ll see the photo) AND I WAS ALREADY BOMBARDED WITH THE ~FEELS~
Once I got inside the building there was an entire shelf dedicated to Urasawa’s mangas, a table for merchandise you could buy (I spent almost 2000¥ but who cares!!!!), and standees of some of the most popular characters of Urasawa-sensei!!!!!!
When I got up to the actual exhibit, the first thing I saw was Johan “welcoming everyone home” and I swear to God it gave me the chills.
I don’t have pictures of the exhibit because it wasn’t allowed (although I took some sneaky videos for snapchat OOPS) but wow… Looking at Urasawa-sensei’s works (HIS DRAFTS AND UNRELEASED ART OH MY GODDD) and just marveling at his utter genius was so overwhelming I was trying so hard not to cry and be the strange gaijin I already looked like.
ALSO!!!! He was actually in the same building (in the conference room below the exhibit room) I NEVER IMAGINED I WOULD BE IN THE SAME PLACE AS /THE/ NAOKI URASAWA. Even if I didn’t see him, just knowing we were breathing the same air is enough.
I’ve said this so many times but his works changed my life (Monster, 20th Century Boys, and Pluto, especially) and I’m really grateful to him for creating such powerful stories.
