BTS Explain Concepts Behind 'Love Yourself: Her' Album: 'This Is the Beginning of Our Chapter Two'

From the meaning of “Go Go” to why the band needed to flex their win at BBMAs, BTS’ Rap Monster explains it all.

Mere hours before the release of BTS’ Love Yourself: Her, the album’s significance wasn’t lost on the group’s leader, Rap Monster.“It’s really a huge, big step for us,” the 23-year-old rapper/songwriter/producer told Billboard during a phone call from Seoul. “Of course, every member is so excited about the album. We’ve been just practicing until now, day and night, to show these new songs and perfected performances. I left a message on our fan cafe, the other day, after we finished that ‘this EP will mark the turning point of BTS’ and even though the wait felt really long with this album – I think it was the huge event, the BBMAs, were in May – so much has happened."The wait has been particularly anticipated for for the band’s famously passionate fan base, known as Army, who have been waiting for new tracks from Rap Monster, Jimin, Suga, J-Hope, Jin, V and Jungkook band after voting them Top Social Artist at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards over fellow pop juggernauts Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez and Shawn Mendes.

How BTS’ BBMA Win Proves K-Pop Can Compete & Thrive on a Global Scale

Since then, the BTS guys have landed distribution deals with Amazon and U.S.-based The Orchard ("We believe the physical album, still, really counts and it’s really important to connect with our fans around the world,” Rap Monster said) and hung out with worldwide chart-toppers like Major Lazer, Halsey, Charli XCX(“Maybe it’s just my sixth sense, but I think maybe we will be collaborating with even more interesting artists,” he added); even snagging The Chainsmokers to produce a beat for Love Yourself: Her.One listen to the tightly produced record – which looks likely to make a big splash on the Billboard 200 next week – and the passion is palpable from the intense lead single “DNA,” the societal commentary in “Go Go,” among multiple lyrics and moments that feel ripped from the members’ personal journals. There’s also loads of passion in Rap Monster’s voice talking about these new songs as he sees and envisions the larger picture and message for his band’s latest batch of forward-thinking EDM, hip-hop and pop tracks. Read on for Billboard’s deeper analysis of Love Yourself: Her with Rap Monster.

Q: Let’s start right from the beginning with “Serendipity.” Why was this the right song to choose as the intro and kick off the era?

When I wrote the lyrics, melodies and the first themes of “Serendipity,” I tried to come up with some rare things you find in life, something very special, like the calico, three-striped cat; things that have extraordinary meanings in people’s lives. I wanted to share this moment.

Q: I was reading the lyrics are gender neutral, which I think is really powerful. Was that a conscious decision?

The lyrics were based on rare and special things in life. So, I thought, those feelings transcend genders, cultures and barriers between people. We always put out the “Intro” just before releasing our single, so the intro is taking the role of telling the concept of this album. But “Serendipity” was actually the right song to share the feelings of our single, “DNA.” The title is about how our DNA is connected in the universe, I think that was the right feel for this album.

Q: Let’s talk about “DNA.” How does this single continue and progress the story of BTS?

When we’re talking about our title tracks, “DNA” is about the expression of a young, passionate love. The lyrics are like, “The two of us our connected fatefully from the start, our DNA was just the one thing.” At the same time, “DNA” is taking BTS to new ground. We tried to apply new grammar and perspectives – if you listen to the song, you’ll understand what I’m trying to say – it’s very different from our previous music, technically and musically. I believe it’s going to be the starting point of a second chapter of our career; the beginning of our Chapter Two.

Q: “Best of Me” is really impressive. It sounds like The Chainsmokers, but it also sounds like BTS. You didn’t lose yourself which isn’t easy when collaborating with new artists. What was that process like?

I love that track! We met them at BBMAs, we were so lucky. Actually, they invited us to their concert just the other day – they had a huge concert in Korea and we sang “Closer” together. For “Best of Me,” they gave us several tracks and samples months ago, we and our producers picked one sample, like, “Okay, this is fit for our next album.” So we worked on it, we sent it to them, we asked them what they think of the track we developed and got their opinions. And we made it! I’m so excited for it. [Laughs]

Q: Your albums always have deeper social and society commentaries. Let’s talk about some of the topics with this release. “Go Go” instantly comes to mind.

“Go Go” is a trendy song, but it’s about how our young generation are living their lives with low expectations and standards so people are upset with reality; they have little hope and there’s so much economic hardship. We wanted to say something about it and emphasize to the world that it’s not their choice, but brutal reality that forces people to live and spend as if there’s no future. But in Korea, “YOLO” has become a big key word for young people because we don’t have money and it’s really hard to get a chance to earn a lot of money. I think society has a lot of problems for young people. Young people spend their money on claw crane machines at arcades and they spend like $30 on trying to win these dolls. And then it’s like, “Oh! I spent all my money…shit. But I don’t regret.” That’s the biggest luxury for Korea’s young people: collecting accessories, cosmetics, that’s what they think is a luxury. It’s “YOLO” because it’s like, “I’m gonna buy allthis! I’m gonna buy all this food and I’m going to eat it! I’m going to do it!” I think it’s sad because it’s all we can. “Go Go” is just saying, “Okay, just do it, we won’t regret it. Just spend several bucks on the machine and eat the food!” But at the same time, the song is very easily to sing along to so I think many people will like that song, especially if they find the deeper meaning.

Q: Of course, I have to ask about making a skit interlude out of your BBMAs acceptance speech.

You need to hear “Mic Drop” because the skit was my speech at BBMAs –  because that was a big moment for our history – and then we put “Mic Drop” next to that because it’s like a flex – like, “Okay, we’re done. We don’t need to give a shit about anything.” That was the right skit and follow-up song for this album.

The last song, “Outro: Her” really spoke to me. It almost reads like a diary.

Ha! [Laughs]

Q: After talking with you, it feels like it recaps the whole album and is really introspective.

I think that was the fastest work I did for this album. I wrote the verse in 20 minutes; it just came, very truthfully, from the bottom of my heart. I thought it was the right outro for this album because it is really a range of emotions – I’m saying I met this person that I really love, this person is the love of my life right now, I’m saying that I was confused and I was looking for love and this world is complex. But I think it’s you so, “I call you 'her,’ 'cause you’re my tear.” “I think you’re the start and the end of me.” That’s what I’m saying: You’re my wonder, but you’re also my answers. You’re my “her,” but you’re still the “tear.”

The hook is saying that love is not all about the happiness, it’s just not just about the joy, it’s not just about delight. If you want to love a person, you should know that there are tears and there can even be hatred inside of it. I think a love really includes all of that. That’s what I was trying to say. It’s complex.

Q: And if fans are so lucky to own the physical album, they’ll hear two hidden tracks at the very. Why keep them secretive?

I think they’re hidden because you have to be a real fan of BTS to understand them. Otherwise, you won’t. Otherwise, you’d like be, “Why are they feeling so confused about things? They’re good?!? They’re No. 1 somewhere, they have so much stuff, why are they worried?” People always talk about that. But if you are true fan of BTS and you buy the album and you listen to the hidden track – if you are an Army and we spent time together from 2013, 2014 – they could understand. It’s kind of more special, more closer, to our true hearts.

The Arkansas Sleep Experiments

To Those Who Sleep

This happened a few years ago. You may have heard rumors if you’re on campus. Some even circulated online. Nobody knew what really happened. Because I’m the only one who knows and I kept quiet. For a multitude of reasons. None of them matter now. Here’s what really happened.

The four of us were handpicked for this experiment by Prof. Richardson because we’d all studied under him, worked under him, and, as much as anyone can, earned his confidence.

He said this one was different. We had to keep it quiet. He wanted to keep details to a minimum. All he would tell us before going in was that he required a month of our lives and that if he succeeded sleep would never again be a necessity.

I am in my own Harry Potter AU hell.

And just because I can:

“Dad…”

Malfoy looked up from his desk, quill poised over the parchment as his son hovered by the study door. Aware that he was frowning, Draco lifted his expression into something more neutral. He was vaguely aware of his own father always frowning whenever he’d tried to talk to him as a boy, and he didn’t want Scorpius to one day think the same about him.

“Come in, come in. Shut the door, you’ll let the heat out.”

The Greengrass estate was a crumbling ruin compared to Malfoy Manner, with only half the library and none of the artifacts Draco had spent the last few years archiving and putting safely away behind spelled glass. But for now it was home, chilly stone walls and all.

“Did you want something?”

“Yes.” Scorpius replied, pausing to tug at the hem of his dark shirt. There’s still a bruise under his eye, faded to be sure, but the mere presence of it made Draco’s heart skip a beat. When he’d seen Severus Potter crawling out of the rubble, face covered in blood and no sign of his own son, he’d known terror like no other.

And Draco Malfoy was intimately familiar with the machinations of terror. He’d been hugged by it once.

“Well,” he prompted, setting aside his work entirely and giving his full attention to his son. “What is it?”

“I want my friends to come visit.”

Draco blinked. Whatever he’d been expecting, it wasn’t that. “Your…friends?”

“Albus Potter and Rosie Granger-Weasley. I would like them to come stay.”

Draco blinked again. Later he’d laugh—somewhat despairingly into a decanter of fire brandy—at the absurdity of the notion that his boy, Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy, was best friends with a Potter and the hybrid off-spring of a Granger Weasley, but the threat of impeding hysterics was quelled under the defiant gaze of his son, narrow chin lifting at some unspoken challenge.

“I see. For how long?”

“A…a week…maybe two…They’re going to France for the Quiditch Cup Primaries…” he glanced down and Draco spied the curled up parchment hidden up his sleeve. “So it wouldn’t be for long.”

Draco glanced at his desk, to the fireplace, then back to his son. “I don’t…”

I want my friends…friendshow often had Astoria lamented his lack of playmates as a child, how often had she fretted that Scorpius’ only interaction had been with adults—or books, or enchanting his own toys for someone to play with. And how quickly had Scorpius’ face crumpled at the utterance of two simple syllables.

“…know if two weeks would be wise, given your mother’s health. She’s still recovering from the move. But I shall discuss it with her, and see what can be done.”

Scorpius stilled, the beaming smile on his face reigned in to something calmer, even now, not wanting to get his hopes up too much. “Thank you. For what it’s worth, we will be good.”

Draco snorted at that, remembering the last time a Malfoy, a Potter and a Granger and a Weasley had been together at their age. “Somehow I doubt it. Go on off you go, go see what your mother is up to. She’s enjoying having you home.”

“And I am enjoying being here,” Scorpius replied, in that curiously courteous and stiff way of speaking he’d always had, even as an infant learning his words. “I am happy to be here, with you, and mother.”

“I’m…very glad to hear it.” Draco replied, unsure what else he was supposed to say to such an open admission said so politely like one was discussing the weather. “Now go on, off you go, I need to finish this manuscript before I lose the thought.”

“You’ll talk to mother though, wont you?” Scorpius pressed from his space by the door. “You’ll ask…”

“Yes, yes.” Draco waved a hand, “I’ll ask if the Potter spawn can come stay with us. Just for a little bit. To say thank you for…everything.”

Reassured, Scorpius left, closing the door behind himself with a firm click.

Draco waited several more moments, counting to a hundred before opening up the top desk of his drawer and pulling out his correspondence folder, flipping through them until he found the appropriate manila envelope, writing the address of the Ministry Neatly to the front.

Clearing his throat politely, he composed himself, then tapped it to life with his wand.

“Hello Potter,” he spat with a vicious familiar glee, unable to keep from laughing, “I’m not sure which one of us is going to be more surprised by this turn of events, but I swear to gods if you break my son’s heart by saying no, I will personally send you a red Howler on the hour every hour till the day one of us dies. Now, about dates, the last week in June works well for us…”

If you wanna write a ficlet based on the tags you put about Derek not being good at receiving compliments so stiles compliments him always I can guarantee you that I will 100% read it and reblog it and comment about how much I love it :D

Well how can I resist that??

The first time it happened, Stiles didn’t think anything of it. Standing over the smoldering remains of the creature that just tried to kill them, he said “nice job”, gave Derek a friendly slap on the back, and suggested they go out for celebratory we didn’t die today milkshakes. He was pleasantly surprised when Derek both agreed and paid, and he dipped fries in both to see if they went better with his strawberry or Derek’s chocolate.

(The answer was chocolate, and Derek didn’t even get mad when three of Stiles’ fries were lost in his shake.)

The second time, he was marveling at the obscure text Derek managed to track down and said, “dude, you are literally the best, I’m buying you pizza!” And shockingly, Derek let him, and even told him what toppings he wanted. That might not seem like much in the grand scheme of things, but Stiles had spent years watching in silent judgment as Derek picked off half the toppings from the pizzas he ordered for the pack, as if he couldn’t get another for himself that he actually liked.

Stiles told him he liked the way he rearranged the loft, and Derek sat through the entire extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring on his new flat screen.

When he mentioned liking the fancy pasta dish Derek made and asked for a lesson to make it, Derek agreed. He showered compliments on Derek’s meticulous overhaul of the bestiary and Derek let him borrow three books.

Derek never let anyone borrow his books, they never left the loft.

These events were all spread out enough that it took a while to click, but when it did, it was both a revelation and incredibly depressing: Derek had no idea what to do with even the most casual of compliments.

Sarcasm was no issue, Stiles knew that much—he’d personally thrown out enough nice martyr complex, jackass and the like to figure that out—but anything that was even remotely sincere?

He started paying attention after that, to the way Derek would stiffen and his eyes would widen a bit before his face closed off again. He would go quiet, maybe nod, and quickly agree to pretty much anything just to get the focus back off himself.

Because Derek was actually embarrassed by compliments.

Bucky would learn minutes later that you were on a quest for crumpled up napkins to clean up the mess you’d made. He didn’t have the gall to tell you that a napkin was pointless. i’m going to be evicted on my birthday

long story short, i moved to england because my landlords lost a cheque and told me they’d already cashed it, so i thought i had $1700 more than i did. i spent it, four months later they found the check, and they want their money back. i’ve already paid back $1000, but i owe another $650 still. i’m trying to pick up as many hours as i can, but i live in the city with the highest unemployment rate in canada, so that’s not easy to come by.

my birthday is on sept. 29, so i’m hoping i’ll get enough birthday money to cover at least half of it, but my family is also pretty broke so i’m not sure if that will pan out.

basically i’m scared. i’m really scared. my roommate and my partner don’t deserve to get kicked out of our beautiful home because i can’t make enough money. i’m in tears right now because i don’t know what else to do but ask for help.

if you’d like something in exchange, i’m very willing to put my skills to work, so this is what i can offer:

- i’m a masters student in education. i’m damn good at writing. you want a resume/cv? cover letter? essays? book reports? proofreading? not only will i do it, i’ll do a damn good job. want it to sound like you, but better? send me a sample of your other work and i’ll make it happen.
- want me to ghostwrite your story or fanfiction? i’ll do it. if you’re not sure if i’m a part of the fandom you’re looking for, just ask.
- want a letter you can read when you’re feeling down telling you how amazing you are, how valued, and how loved? i’ll write it for you. hell, i’ll write it by hand and mail it to you with little stickers.
- you want nudes? fuck yeah, done. you into weird stuff? trust me, i do not care.
please signal boost this and donate if you can. i’m so scared that my 25th birthday is going to be the day i’m evicted from my home.

He didn’t even know how they had managed to snap that photo because it wasn’t exactly in front of the cameras. You had mostly been standing on the side with his brothers, and great friends of yours, and he had rushed to you to get that good luck kiss. He didn’t expect there to be evidence of that so he was glad he’d kept himself from kissing you properly on the lips.

“(Y/n) and you.” he completed with a smile, glancing for a moment at the enthusiastic audience “You two-” he turned back to the actor “You two are great friends right? I’m- I’m just asking because that could, you know, be misinterpreted by some.” he motioned to the photo, giving a look at the audience and everybody laughed at that.

Tony Stark isn’t new to kids, not exactly.

He’s always tried to visit paediatric wards when he had a moment, letting the kids play with the armours and telling them stories. He helped Reed and Sue with babysitting, and he remembers Val’s first attempts at building microprocessors. He held a newborn Danielle Cage in his arms and he marvelled at how tiny she was. He’s always glad to help his baby Avengers with homework.

He likes kids. He might never have his own, and he tells himself he’s made his peace with that, but he likes kids and he likes spending time with them, from babies and toddlers to I’m-not-a-kid-anymore teenagers.

And the moments he spends with kids never get any less special.

Death Note (2017) and the Comparative Lens

I’ll be honest. When I found out that Death Note was getting an Americanized live action adaptation, I wasn’t too thrilled. In fact, I was terrified that something I loved was going to be straight up murdered before my eyes  — and I wasn’t ready to give it a shot. In fact, I was really unwilling to budge on this until recently.

However, about three hours ago, the movie came out on Netflix. Sitting there with my housemates, I decided to give the movie a shot and check it out. for those of you who would like to avoid spoilers, this is the cutoff point for spoilers. There are an awful lot of them beyond this point.

Death Note is not a particularly new thing to many of us. If you’ve spent an hour talking about anime or reading manga, you know that Death Note exists. Finding out about the series or the source material that preceded this movie is not particularly hard; the hard part comes in discarding the source material to give the movie a fair shake.

When you look at something like this, you have to discard your comparative lens at the start of the movie to suspend your disbelief. When you sit down to watch something like, say, Game of Thrones, you are undertaking that viewing with the understanding that it’s not going to be exactly like it was in A Song of Ice and Fire.

The same thing must be done for Death Note (2017). When you sit down to watch this movie, you have to decide if you want to give it a fair shake. If not, that’s fine, but that’s what I set out to do.

Starting from the top, the movie itself isn’t bad. If you hadn’t seen the anime before watching it, it holds up to a 6/10 or a 7/10, but likely doesn’t pass an 8 on most scales. Let me explain by starting with some discussion on the main cast before getting into the actual synopsis and response.

The casting of Lakeith Stanfield as L is great, and he dramatically outperforms the rest of the cast; his take on L is both familiar to those who want similarities to what they know and slightly more emotive and human to appeal to the audience. His grasp of the character is magnificent, and I’m sure he studied for this role. I’d highly recommend watching this movie just to watch his performance if nothing else.

There’s only one problem with this: his performance feels slightly hollow when put next to Nat Wolff and Willem Dafoe. Willem Dafoe is a great man and a talented actor… but this is by no means his best showing.

Nat Wolff, comparatively fresh to the silver screen (or technically not, since it’s closer to a direct to DVD release), paints a picture of a very fragmented Light. At times too comedic, too frustrated, and too unbelievable, his portrayal of his character comes across as transparent. It surprised me to find that his version of Light didn’t hold up to the “judge and jury” that the film tries to make him.

Light is at times frustrating and all said, a little annoying. My favorite moment of his in the film comes three minutes in, when a bully punches him in the face and knocks him out.

The funny thing about the casting, though, is that it gives Margaret Qualley, playing Mia Sutton (analogous to Misa, from the series) the chance to shine in a dark way.

Since we’ve now discussed the cast, it’s important to note that the casting for this movie is not to blame or to praise in its success or failure. Whether or not this movie is good does not depend entirely on the choices made in its casting.

The movie itself revolves around Light Turner (an Americanization of Light Yagami), the son of a “hippy” and a police chief. Light, after passing off some homework for money to one of his fellow students, finds the eponymous Death Note when it falls from the sky in the middle of a storm. Light, after meeting Ryuk, is forced to come to terms with the power he now holds… and the consequences that accompany that power.

One of his first confidantes is his fellow student, Mia Sutton; Mia is initially skeptical, but after Light kills a criminal on a live stream, she comes around to his side and the two quickly enter into a strange love affair based on his ability to kill these criminals. Light takes the name “Kira” in order to make law enforcement suspect that he’s actually based in Japan, as “Kira” is a true cognate for the English word “killer.”

Hot on Kira’s heels are his father, who doesn’t know his son is involved, and L, a young detective with a murky past. L quickly deduces that Light is based in Seattle based on the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of a hostage taker, whose name was only released in the Seattle area.

Correctly linking Kira to Light’s father, L begins the investigation in earnest, accidentally pushing the inexperienced boy and his new powers too far. After quick, dazzling victories over the danger known as Kira, L confronts Light in a coffee shop one night, convinced of his foe’s identity.

It’s at this point that things take a sharp turn. Light, in the films, is just a schoolboy in over his head, eager to impress his girlfriend with his “wicked cool” murder powers. He is not the character most loved in the manga or the anime, and this is why the adaptation must be viewed differently. Light’s identity is discovered after the death of several task force members and the public revelation of his father’s name and face on TV. Unbeknownst to Light, Mia murdered those men with a page from the note, attributing it to Ryuk.

When Mr. Turner isn’t killed, L confronts Light in a cafe at night, revealing to him that he’s aware of the high schooler’s alter ego. After Light tries to explain that he didn’t kill the task force members, his pleas fall on deaf ears, and L tersely informs him that he’ll be brought to justice.

After this, things take a steep, steep increase in pace. Light and Mia manage to take control over Watari using the Death Note, with the rule in place (via the notebook) that a person can be controlled for two days before their death. Light, in order to circumvent Watari’s death, intends to burn the page containing Watari’s name before he dies, sparing him.

Unbeknownst to him, Mia takes the page from his notebook… throwing a spanner in the works.

After the death of Watari, Mia reveals that she’s been planning to take the Death Note for herself. Light is then forced to flee by a vengeance driven L, given the ultimatum that if she doesn’t get the notebook by midnight, that he will die (as she’s written his name on her page).

L catches up to Light in the back of an alley as Light tries to meet Mia at the spot of their last date to hand over the notebook. He tries to explain what happened, but L doesn’t listen… and despite having Light at gunpoint, is knocked out from behind by a nearby citizen who overheard Light admit to being Kira. Grateful for what Kira has done, he lets Light go.

Light makes it to Mia atop a ferris wheel at the pier… and tells her not to take the book, as he’s written her name in it, putting them at a stalemate. Only one page of the book can be burned by its holder (Light), and unbeknownst to Mia, Light has made her death conditional. If she takes the book, she will die.

She takes the book and dies.

Light, having written his plan out in advance before fleeing L earlier, is saved when he falls into the water below the pier and is rescued by an old man, whose name he wrote in the book earlier. At the same time, another old man (both criminals) takes the Death Note for two days while Light recovers, filling out pages for him to give him an alibi.

This is explained to Light’s father while Light recovers in the hospital. The movie comes to an end as L realizes the meaning of a clue Light left him during the movie’s main chase scene; finding a stray page of the Death Note, L contemplates writing Light’s name… and Ryuk comments on the interesting nature of mankind.

Back to the review, though. The narrative pacing of the movie is rushed in the front half, for obvious reasons. The pacing that ensues around the climax of the movie, though, is great. The reveal that Mia is actually the antagonist of the movie makes sense and was well thought out. It’s not blatant, but it is foreseeable if you pay attention to her character throughout.

The cinematography is… amateur. It’s not very refined, and most shots make up for in color what they lack in substance. The camera work, for the most part, resembles a college student’s final short film.

Characters often abandon the rules established for them by their characterization in the first half of the movie in ways I’m unsure of. L turns into an action star in the last thirty minutes, and Light is… well, he’s annoying all the way through, but he never really gets a solid definition. The only way to sum up his character in the film is “inept,” but it does bring you to mentally treat him like a villain, which is good.

Its ending is vastly different from its source material (as L is alive), but ultimately more satisfying. The problems that plague the movie throughout, though, never really go away.

Despite this, most cast members put on a strong performance at least once in the film, and the movie follows a nice, neat arc. Reveals are carefully done and at multiple points, I was on the edge of my seat. Gorey action scenes (usually gratuitous deaths) aren’t cheap; they reinforce the notion that what Light is doing is wrong, even if he’s doing it for the right reasons. At no point do I sympathize with the character, which is a little frustrating, but also familiar.

The soundtrack… I don’t like it. It’s too “eighties” for me. It tries too hard to sound like Miami Vice, for unknown reasons. The music is too heavy handed, and often too easily applied to each scene. At no point am I left to wonder the nonexistent subtleties of its soundtrack.

This movie is a solid thriller, with a satisfying ending, a decent cast and a good narrative arc. Despite this, Death Note (2017) does not follow well with its source material, which it uses primarily as a guideline. If you’re expecting to see familiar faces from the manga (or even the anime), you will be disappointed.

Lakeith Stanfield kills it, though.

His voice was almost a whisper, warm breath hitting the shell of your ear. And the heat coupled with the slow, savory movements of his fingers overtop the thin fabric had an almost numbing effect, your mind drawing a blank as you enter an intoxicating haze.

“I thought there was no punishment?” you manage to say, swallowing back the moans that threatened to escape.
“This is a demonstration baby, not a punishment.”

Jin

As you entered the door after a long day of work, you smiled as you saw the boys scattered about. It was finally a day where you could stay at the dorms with them, after their insanely hectic schedule. You could smell food coming from the kitchen, and you realized how hungry you actually were.

“Hey y/n” rap mon said from the sofa, you waved, dropping your bag and walking over to the kitchen. You ruffled Jungkook’s hair on the way, and he huffed, attempting to fix it.. You crept into the kitchen, seeing Jin working at the stove. You smiled to yourself, wrapping your arms around his waist.

“Hobi the food isn’t done” he said in frustration. you stifled a giggle, looking up at him.

“I’m gonna have to talk to Hobi about being touchy with my man now aren’t I?” you said. He smiled, quickly trying to face you, but his hand hit the scolding hot pan in the process.

“FUCK!” he yelled, jumping back, causing you to let go.

“shit baby let me help..” you said, reaching for his hand but he snatched it back, burning it once more.

“y/n.. get the fuck out of my face… you’ve helped enough” he growled. You felt yourself tense up. Jin never cursed at you. You looked over, and saw the six boys watching you with their mouths hanging open. Refusing to let yourself cry in front of them, you swiftly walked to the living room, grabbing your bag, and heading home.

A few hours later, after feeling like absolute shit, you heard a knock at the door. Puffy eyed, you opened it and saw Jin standing there with a Tupperware container in his non bandaged hand, and flowers in the other. You leaned against the door frame, staring him down.

“What?” you said, in an almost inaudible voice. He melted at the sight of you, almost not being able to let words out.

“I’m so sorry.. I shouldn’t have snapped at you.. and I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that.. I swear I won’t do it again..” he whispered. You chewed on your bottom lip, and saw tears weld in his eyes. You broke, wrapping your arms around his neck, and kissing his cheek.

“it’s okay.. come inside..” you whispered. He softly kissed you, accepting your invitation inside.

You smiled, happy at yourself with what you had done. Yoongi was at practice, and you managed to clean his studio. It was a disaster with the upcoming comeback. You sorted all of his papers, filing them all onto his desk in folders. You made sure everyone’s lines was sorted, songs were sorted by track number and color coded. Took his trash out, dusted, swept, the whole nine yards. Organized cd’s, flash drives, everything. anything to make yoongi’s life easier. You knew the environment was becoming a lot for him. You just wanted to make him happy. You ordered take out, and waited for him to stumble into the door, because he was coming to work in the studio after dance. It was simply meant to be a time you two spent together. As you heard the door creak open, you watched as an already exhausted yoongi walked in. You watched as his face contoured into an expression you didn’t expect. He looked angry. Infuriated.

“what did you do..” he said.

“I cleaned up for you…. I know you were complaining that you needed to clean up.. so I did it for you..” you said, in almost a whisper.

“What.. did… you… do..” he said. You stood silent.

“I had everything placed specifically a certain way! What the hell would possess you to do this!!!” he yelled. You stood dumbfounded.

“Yoongi i-im sorry I only wanted to help….” you said.

“just.. get out of here please. I have to sort this mess you made.” he spat. You rose silently, walking out of the building. You stood outside, feeling confused, and guilty. While you did that, yoongi realized what you had done, and felt guilty immediately. You had made it easier for him, leaving little post it notes on the computer, indicating what meant what, and what color was assigned to whom. He also saw the bag of take out, and sighed. He ran outside, hoping to catch you before you got too far.

“y/n..” he said breathlessly. You turned around, seeing him crouched over trying to catch his breath.

“i’m sorry… come here..” he whispered, taking you in his arms.

“I’m sorry.. I’m just stressed.. I shouldn’t have come at you.. you were trying to help me.. I love you.. thank you.. lets go eat..” he whispered, softly kissing you. You followed, slightly confused, slightly happy.

You were frustrated. Hobi hadn’t been home in hours. This was a reoccurring thing. The comeback was slowly approaching, so he spent countless hours in the dance room. He was constantly out, leaving early, returning late. You genuinely missed him. He wasn’t only your boyfriend, but your best friend. You sat on the sofa, fighting sleep to see him at least once. Hour ticked by. 12 Am. 1 AM. 2 AM. 3 AM. He walked into the door at nearly 4 in the morning. You sat up, and he sighed, taking his shoes off.

“Hi baby..” you said, making your way over to him. He took his jacket off, not uttering a word. It was the first time you’d seen him in a while. You just wanted to hug him. You took the jacket from him, placing it on the sofa, and wrapped your arms around him. He pushed you off, with glaring at you.

“Geez you’re so clingy. I just got here and I’m tired” he said. You were dumbfounded, but mostly hurt.

:Well. Sorry for being clingy. I just missed my boyfriend, and wanted to fucking see him so I stood up till almost 4 in the morning to see him. Sorry that I fucking missed you.” you said, tears burning your eyes. You made your way to your room, laying in bed. He went to the shower, and you heard him cursing under his breath. Tears slowly trickled down your cheek as he crawled into bed, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you close to him. You sniffled, crossing your arms.

“I’m sorry.. I’m just tired with the come back.. I didn’t mean it.. you know i love when you’re all over me…” he whispered in your ear. You remained silent. He softly kissed your shoulder and you melted against him.

“I missed you too..” he whispered in your ear.

“Joon.. I don’t know what I clicked.. but I accidentally deleted something off your laptop..” you whispered. He paled immediately.

“not the tracks.. please tell me it wasn’t the tracks..” he whispered. You remained silent. He moved you to the side, seeing that they were gone.

“y/N WHAT THE FUCK!” he yelled. You jumped, not expecting that.

“I worked for weeks on this shit! Why the fuck did you touch my shit! How could you do something so idiotic!” he yelled. His voice boomed in the enclosed room. You felt small suddenly, tossing him the flash drive.

“it’s on here.. It was a prank…” you whispered, walking out of the room nearly in tears. He sighed, following you out. You locked yourself in the bathroom trying to calm down. He could hear your hiccup sobs from the other side of the door.

“baby i’m sorry.. please come out..” he said. You made your way out, arms crossed, sniffling.

“You yelled at me..” you whispered, near tears again. He took you in his arms, trying to calm you down.

“Jimin guess what!” you squealed.

“Not now” he mumbled.

“really quick baby I have great news!” You squealed. He glared at you, but you were still giddy and excited.

“I said not now! I’m busy!” he yelled. You took a step back, trying to figure out who he was talking to. You shoved the paper in his chest, becoming angry like he was and walking out. When he would get home he would feel bad, seeing you on the sofa with your arms crossed, clearly upset. He crawled next to you, laying his head on your lap and not letting you push him off.

“i’m sorry… I was rude.. Congratulations jagii.. you passed..” he said. You stared forward, ignoring him. He sat up, pulling you onto his lap, and placing his plump lips on yours, knowing you wouldn’t be able to resist. You kissed back happily, and he smiled.

“Let’s go celebrate” he said, picking you up and taking you to the bedroom and you started dying.

“Where is it!!!!!” you heard your boyfriend yell. You tiptoed over shoes, and sweaters, careful not to step on anything.

“baby?” you asked, looking into your bedroom.

“I can’t find it!” he yelled

“my sweater! my favorite sweater!” he yelled. You sat there, completely and utterly confused. Then you realized that it must have been at the top of the donations pile. Tae had the habit of throwing things in random piles, so you assumed it was for donations.

“… it wasn’t the black one with the grey writing on the front was it..” you asked.

“yes! have you seen it?” he asked.

“baby.. don’t get mad.. I assumed it was donations… It was in the pile-” you started

“What the fuck y/n!” he yelled.

“it’s not my fault you throw your shit around!” you yelled back. You stormed off into the living room, cleaning up. After he calmed down, he pulled you close to him on the sofa.

:im sorry.. it was my fault.. it’s going to someone in need.. you still love me right?” he teased. You huffed, looking at him.

“Sadly.” you responded. He showered you with kisses, and you smiled, feeling 1000000x better.

You sat in the kitchen, working on an assignment when you heard the front door shut. Your favorite time of day. Your boyfriend, Jungkook was finally home. It was really busy for the both of you lately. School had started again, so you were constantly studying, and his comeback was slowly creeping up, so he was always at practice, and rarely home. You missed him, and rarely got to see him. You were only lucky this time because you were up late to finish something. You walked into the living room, and saw him elevating his leg.

“What happened?” you asked, softly kissing him.

“I fell at practice.” he groaned. you tried fixing the pillow, but he moved away. You ignored it, walking to the kitchen and getting him an ice pack.

“my poor baby.. do you want something for the pain?” you asked.

“I’m fine. You’re acting like my mom” he said. You frowned, trying to put the ice pack on his leg. He moved away once again.

“I said i”m fine!” he yelled. You looked at him, irritation taking over.

“You bust your ass, I’m not the one who hurt you. Stop acting like a dick” you said, throwing the ice pack at his chest. You stormed out, and he sighed. Your attitude was the craziest thing he had experienced, but it was his favorite thing about you. You didn’t take shit from anyone. He felt guilty immediately, letting his pride get the best of him when you were only trying to help. You shut your laptop, going to bed. He hopped over, laying next to you and pulling you onto his chest.

“You’re sexy when you’re mad” he teased.

“Do you want another bad leg?” you asked. He grinned, softly kissing you.

“I’m sorry.. you were trying to help.. thank you babyyyyy” he said gooffily, trying to kiss you up.

“Jungkook you need to watch yourself.” you said. He continued kissing on you, eventually making you give in.

“I love you..” he whispered.

But that didn’t happen. Y/N fell to her knees, the loud thump making Harry turn around and stare at her in shock. The sight in front of him reminded him of last night, when he was the one to drop down on his knees and sob until his lungs were begging him to stop.
Y/N curled in on herself, making herself as small as possible. Her loud cries were heartbreaking and Harry wasn’t sure if she was able to breath anymore because her loud gasps didn’t sound like she was able to take in any air.
He kneeled down in front of her, one hand on her knee, his thumb stroking over the fabric of her skinny jeans.
“You have to calm down or you’ll make yourself sick.” he told her.
But her sobs didn’t die down, if anything they only got worse.
“Alright.” he sighed and lifted her up with one hand underneath her knees and one underneath her arms.
She wrapped her arms around his neck then, crying into his shoulder. Harry walked her to his living room, sitting down with her on his lap. He slung a blanket over her body because he knew that always comforted her.
He stroked her head, his fingers playing with her hair. It took time but after a while she stopped sobbing and gasping for air, her breathing still ragged but almost normal.
“I m-made a mistake.” she said after a while.
Harry didn’t say anything, he decided to let her talk and not interrupt her.
“I know I should have told him. But I was so goddamn nervous. I’ve been with him for two years now, it just seems unfair to me to break up with him so sudden. He stood in front of me yesterday and he was so happy to see me and… I just couldn’t do it.”
Harry thought for a moment. Of course he knew it wouldn’t be easy for her but didn’t she know that it wasn’t easy for him either?

“You didn’t have to have sex with him.”
“I know. I know I shouldn’t have done it but… I needed comfort. I felt like no matter what I do, it’s wrong. I just needed to forget everything for a bit.”
“But you knew that I would feel it. I told you.” Harry scoffed.
“I-I hoped you wouldn’t.”
Harry shook his head and let her glide from his lap, bending forward to rest his elbows on his knees, his head in his hands.
“Do you even know what that did to me? You ripped my fucking heart out. I spent forever in the shower to somehow get rid of that feeling of you with another man but it didn’t help. I’ve never cried so hard. I felt you having sex with him before but now that I met you, now that I kissed you… You cheated on me. You did the one thing you never were supposed to do.”
Y/N eyes were cast down to the floor, starring at god knows what.
“I…” Harry stopped, he didn’t know if he wanted to tell her.
But he had to.
“I don’t feel you anymore.”
Y/N screwed her eyes shut, her head shaking from side to side.
“I… don’t have that feeling in my chest anymore.”
Y/N got up from the couch and stood in front of the big window, starring outside.
Harry cleared his throat and got up as well.
“Maybe it’d be be best you’d lea-”
“What do I have to do to make this right?” she whirled around.
“I don’t know.” Harry sighed.
“There has to be something, Harry.”
“You destroyed us.” he smiled sadly.
“I don’t think you can do anything.”
“You can’t stop loving your soulmate, that’s not possible.” she shook her head.
Harry stared at her. She started to walk over to him, cupping his face in her hands.
“I still feel you. I still have that feeling in my chest.”
Harry had to admit that her touch did something to him.
“Just tell me what to do.” she begged.
He hesitated for a moment. The thoughts in his mind swirling around.
“We’ll go to your place. And I’ll wait with you until he comes home. You tell him.”
She nodded her head furiously.
“Anything.”
“But I can’t promise you that that’ll make everything okay again.”
She smiled sadly but nodded.
She gazed into his eyes for a few more moments, before she leaned in to kiss him. But Harry whipped his head to the side so she could only reach his cheek. She closed her eyes with frustration, but pressed her lips against his skin harder.
“I brought breakfast. Maybe we could eat that before we go?” she asked him, somewhat nervous because she was sure that she couldn’t take another rejection.
“‘Course.” he agreed.

To say that breakfast was awkward would be an understatement. It was literally horrible. They sat across from each other, none of them knowing what to say or what to do.
When her phone dinged with a message she felt Harry tense up. Of course he knew who it was from.
“What does he say?” he asked with fake nonchalance, it may sound cruel but Y/N was glad that he reacted like that.
“He’s leaving work early. He’s home in an hour.” she told him, leaving out the 'I love you.’ he ended the message with.
“Then we’ll have to go.” Harry said and got up from his seat.
“Yeah.”

Once they arrived Y/N was shaking with nerves. Nothing was safe now. What would Matthew do when she told him? Hit Harry? Yell at her? Insult her?
And what would Harry do afterwards? Leave and never come back? Realize that he still didn’t feel anything?
She was scared. So incredibly scared.
When Matthew arrived it was like time stood still. He closed the door behind him and stared at Harry and Y/N, how he sat at the kitchen table with a frown and how she whirled around from where she was leaning against the kitchen counter.
“Um… hi?” Matthew said, confusion clear in his voice.
“Hi.” Y/N breathed.
“Who’s that?” he asked, referring to Harry.
“That’s Harry.”
They nodded at each other briefly as a way of greeting.
“My soulmate.”
Matthews eyes snapped to Y/N’s and lips parted with shock.
“Oh?”
“Yeah.” she nodded.
“Well… it was about time, eh?” Matthew started to smile, a genuine one.
Y/N stared at him dumbfounded, like she couldn’t believe her ears.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Matthew said and walked over to Harry, outstretching his hand for him to shake.
“Nice to meet you too, mate.” Harry grinned softly and grabbed his hand.
“Probably not that nice, hm?” Matthew looked at him sympathetically.
“What do you mean?” Harry asked.
“I mean… My significant other has a boyfriend too and it rips my heart out. Probably the same for you.”
Harry nodded softly, his eyes catching Y/N’s who looked at both of them with wonder.
“So you two met today?”
“Um, no.” Harry replied.
“No?” Matthew asked and looked to Y/N.
“We… we met yesterday.” she answered.
“Oh.”
It was quiet for a moment, everyone seemingly lost in their own thoughts until Matthew realized that if they met yesterday…
“Wait. Yesterday?”
Y/N and Harry both nodded.
“But… but we had…”
“Yep.” Harry nodded, popping the 'p’.
“Oh goodness.” Matthews’s eyes widened.
“I’m so sorry, mate. I didn’t know.”
“It’s not your fault.” Harry stared directly at Y/N.
She closed her eyes and looked away.
“Um… I guess I’ll better leave now, yeah? I think you two have a lot to talk about. I’m going to get my stuff the next few days.”
“Okay.” Y/N whispered.
“I really am sorry, mate.” Matthew told Harry, patting his shoulder once.
“Take care of her, yeah?”
Harry nodded with a tight lipped smile.
And seconds later the door closed behind Matthew.
Harry got up from his seat, the chair creating an uncomfortable sound against the floor.
He stood in front of Y/N with his arms crossed, starring her down.
“I-I didn’t know he would react like that.” she stuttered.
“What did you think would happen, hm? That he would yell at you? For meeting your soulmate?”
Y/N stayed silent because she knew whatever she would say it wouldn’t help her.
“You’re really not making this easy on me, you know? I don’t know what I’m supposed to so with all this.” he spoke, his voice gentle now.

He sighed when he saw her starring at the ground, her bottom lip wobbling. He took a step forward, his hands touching her upper arm softly.
“I want to love you. I want to love you with every fiber of my being and start a happy life with you. But I don’t know if I can do that.”
“Can we at least try?” she whimpered.
“Love…”
“Please. We can take it slow, as slow as you want. I’d do everything to make you forgive me. Please.” she begged.
“I need time, okay? Time to think.”
She closed her eyes briefly, the thought of not seeing him for some time too much.
“Anything you want.” she agreed nonetheless.
Harry nodded and smiled softly at her before he leaned down. Y/N gasped, thinking he’d kiss her but his kiss only landed on her cheek.
And seconds later her front door fell shut.

The first day she didn’t see him wasn’t easy for her but she handled it.
It wasn’t any easier for him either but he pushed through it.
The second day was much worse, her chest felt like it was tightening in on her and her body was shaking the whole day.
Harry felt like he couldn’t breath, his lungs struggling and his headache getting worse with every minute.
The third day was the worst, Y/N was feeling dizzy and weak. Her body not being able to move a lot before her limps gave out.
Harry felt hot all over but cold at the same time. He wasn’t able to eat or do anything really because he was sure he would faint.
But he had to do something.
One thing.
He drove over to her place even though he was shaking so much he couldn’t even hold the stirring wheel still.
He knocked against the door and gasped when she opened immediately. She looked even worse than he imagined. She was still breathtakingly beautiful but she looked in pain. So much pain.
“Oh, my love.” he whimpered and closed the little gap between them, wrapping her in a bone crashing hug.
She slung her arms around his neck and breathed him in, finally feeling like she was able to survive again.
He pulled away from her a bit, only so much to close the door behind him and look at her.
“I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry for what I did to you. Of course, I love you. God, I don’t even know how I could think that I don’t. I think I just pushed that feeling away because I was so heartbroken and hurt and mad and… I’m so sorry.” Harry spoke, taking forever to get the words out.
“You have nothing to be sorry for, you hear me?” she cupped his cheeks.
“But-”
“No. You did absolutely nothing wrong. The only person who needs to apologize is me. What I did was the worst thing I could have ever done to you. I hurt you so much and I don’t think I can ever make that up to you. But I want you to know that I love you. I love you with everything I have and that won’t ever change.”
“I love you too.” Harry whispered.
Y/N smiled at him and stroked over his cheek with the back of her hand.
Harry gazed deeply into her eyes for a few more moments before he leaned in and connected their lips in a soft and loving kiss. Fireworks erupted behind their eyelids, butterflies in their tummies coming to life and their heartbeats speeding up.
“Show me. Show me how much you love me.” Harry whimpered when they parted again.
“Harry.” Y/N gasped.
“Please.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. Just… not here.” he mumbled, his cheeks turning pink.
Y/N understood and nodded, threading her fingers through his.
“Then let’s go to your place.”

They bursted through the door once they arrived, kissing passionately and not parting for a single second. Harry led her through his apartment, claiming her mouth with his and stopping every few moments to pull her tight against his body and feel her closer.
Once they reached Harry’s bedroom he didn’t know what to do anymore. He never did this before and he was nervous, he didn’t want to mess up.
But Y/N made him feel safe with her. She was gentle with him and loving. She kissed over his chest once she removed his shirt, making him feel warm inside. She guided him to do the same and once he threw her shirt to the floor he did, kissing over every inch of her soft skin.

She helped him open her bra, letting the straps fall from her shoulders and throwing the thing across the room, as far away as possible. Harry pressed her chest against his with his hands on her back, moaning softly when her skin came in contact with his.
Y/N’s hand wandered lower after a bit of time, palming him over the fabric of his tight jeans before squeezing briefly and causing another moan to fall from his swollen lips.
She opened the button of his jeans when he seemed okay with it, pulling the zipper down right after. Harry wiggled the tight fabric from his legs, throwing it behind himself before he began kissing her body again, over her bare breasts to her tummy and to the waistline of her jeans. He opened them slowly and pulled them down, gasping softly when his fingers brushed against her soft legs.
Y/N guided his face to hers, covering his mouth with hers and making him press against her, the bulge in his boxers rubbing against her panty covered crotch.
She let her hand wander into his boxers, moaning when she felt how hard and warm he was. And how thick.
She couldn’t take it anymore then, needing to see him. She pulled his boxers down, freeing him and watching how his cock slapped against his stomach with how hard he was. He was so incredibly big, the bulbous head of him leaking precum and smearing it on his skin.
She touched him, letting her index finger run over the very prominent vein on the underside of him and watching how he twitched at the contact.
Harry stared at her, how she seemed so fascinated by him. He groaned when she took him in her hand, not able to wrap her whole hand around him because he was just so goddamn big. She moved her hand up, twisting it once she reached his tip and stroking down again. Harry’s mouth was opened in a silent moan, his eyes rolling back when her thumb stroked over his slit and gathered his precum.
She stopped then, knowing that if she kept going this would be over before it even started. Harry looked down at her with glassy eyes, already looking absolutely fucked out. He hooked his thumbs into her panties and pulled them down her legs, gasping once he saw her completely naked.
She spread her legs for him, letting him crawl in between them. He stared at her. Her pussy was pink and glistening with her arousal, some of it dripping from her. Her stroked his middle finger in between her lips, gathering some of her wetness and licking it off with his tongue. She tasted amazing. He spread her lips apart with two fingers and pressed a kiss against her, grinning when she moaned for him.
Even though he never did this before he let his feeling guide him and it seemed he did good by the way she got even wetter and moaned underneath his mouth. But she pulled him away once she was close to reaching her peak, pulling him up by his hair and looking at him with wide eyes.
He crawled up her body, hovering over her before leaning down and pressing a kiss to her lips, making her taste herself on him.
“You’re so good, Harry.” she whimpered once they parted, wonder evident in her voice.
He grinned at her, before kissing her again and reveling in the way she reacted to it, her back arching and a quiet moan vibrating against his lips.
“I-I don’t have a condom.” he suddenly realized, his eyes widening.
“I don’t either.” she sighed and Harry already closed his eyes in frustration, his head dropping to her chest in defeat.
“But I’m on the pill and clean, I promise.” she told him, making him lift his face to look at her.
“I’m clean too but… is that really safe? I mean-”
“It is. Just pull out.” she told him and Harry nodded.
“Are you sure?” he asked her one more time.

“100 percent.” she answered in an instant.
Harry took ahold of him and lined him up with her entrance, rubbing his tip over her slit a few times to gather her wetness before he slipped it inside, watching with wonder how her eyes rolled back in pleasure. He pushed in then, slowly but forcefully until he was completely inside of her, his balls pressed against her ass.
She pulled him even deeper with her heels digging into the small of his back, making him hover over her.
“You’re so big.” she whimpered, moaning when he thrusted the tiniest bit.
“And you’re so goddamn tight.” he told her and began to pull out slowly until only the tip of him was inside her before thrusting back in to the hilt and making her scream in pure pleasure.
Harry took it slow and made sure she was able to feel every inch of him inside of her, filling her up. He loved the feel of her warm and slick walls around him, how they clamped down on him once she got close and got even tighter.
He rubbed her clit then, making sure to make her cum as hard as possible. With his hips snapping against hers, his relentless circles against her bundle of nerves and his encouragements to let go she came. And she came hard. She trashed around, moaning into the air, her eyes rolling back and her pussy squeezing Harry’s cock. He followed soon after, pulling out in the last second, pumping his cock in his fist and groaning loudly when cum spurted from his tip and landen on Y/N’s body, painting her tummy with thick and hot streaks.
Once he milked himself for everything he got Y/N dipped her fingers into his cum and licked it off, cleaning her whole tummy like that while Harry watched with wide eyes.
“Goddamn.” he whispered what made her giggle.

He pressed a kiss to her lips before he dropped to the mattress beside her, his mind not seeming to comprehend what just happened.
“Where the hell did you learn to fuck like that?” she asked him after a moment, making him choke on air.
“I haven’t- I mean I told you I never did this before.”
“Then you’re a natural.” she stated.
He didn’t say anything, the blush creeping up his neck towards his cheeks.
“Seriously.” she said and turned onto her stomach to look at him.
“That was the best sex I ever had.” she told him and stroked his flushed cheek.
“Wasn’t exactly making love, eh?” he giggled after a moment.
“No. Not really.” she grinned back and leaned down to press her lips against his.
“We’ll do that during round two.”
And just like that everything was how it was supposed to be.

Together, Alone (Soulmark AU)

Idk how people feel about reading 1.6K drabbles on tumblr, so I also posted it on AO3 for funsies!

Dedicated to @serpensthesia for her birthday! #serpaken for life <3

Thanks to @bixgirl1 and @jadepresley for reading over this for me! And to @femmequixotic and @noeeon for encouraging the idea and making me write! <3<3<3

It started on his seventeenth birthday.

Draco had known it would start then, of course. That part was normal. The clock was supposed to manifest as a tattoo on his skin, and begin its countdown to the moment Draco would meet his Soulmate. He’d been looking forward to the clock’s appearance all year— desperate for anything that might take his mind off his hopeless situation. Draco was exhausted, the damned cabinet was never going to be fixed, and his whole family was probably going to die as punishment.

And Draco had been prepared to die with them, resigned to the fact that his countdown tattoo might not appear at all, or might be stuck at 00:00:00:00:00:00 right from the beginning.

Draco had not, however, been prepared for the clock to appear at midnight and begin counting down from a mere one minute and seventeen seconds. His heart jumped in his chest. Clearly Draco was one of those rare wizards who had already met their Soulmate, but hadn’t known yet because he wasn’t of age at the time. Which didn’t help Draco in the slightest, as he could think of precisely nobody at Hogwarts who he might like to spend the rest of his life with.

He stood up from the stool he’d set in front of the hopeless cabinet, grabbed his wand, and began making his way to the door of the Room of Hidden Things. Between the time he’d spent staring at his countdown in disbelief, the time it took to reach the door, and the few seconds he devoted to not panicking, the clock reached zero at the very moment he pushed open the door.
