i should be working on my book report

reasons why my middle school english teacher is one of the most #iconic people i’ve ever met

  • added me on facebook when i was a junior in high school with the message, “i was wondering if it was okay to add you, and then i was like, eehhhhhh screw it, she’s not my student anymore”
  • when i made a status saying “i used to be a straight a student… now i’m not even straight…” she commented “same”
  • once got an entire class period off-track because she wound up explaining the difference between being trans and being a drag queen to a group of 12 year olds (this was when i decided i liked her)
  • commented “YAS” when i shared the carmilla season 3 trailer
  • had a reputation for being a hardass but let me eat lunch in her classroom when i didn’t have any friends
  • also she wasn’t even really a hardass she just expected people to do the work???
  • an actual conversation we had: “Can I use this book for my book report?” “You’re supposed to use an ‘age-appropriate’ book out of the school library, this is for adults. “*tiny susie groaning*” “I know. It’s a stupid rule. You should be able to read what you want, you know?”
  • one time my friend and i were at a local arts festival, which just meant it was a gathering place for stoners, gays, and broke college students, and we got shanghaied into volunteering to pick up trash, which naturally meant the second we were alone, we started fucking around and NOT picking up trash, and when we were swordfighting with the trash-pick-uppers, someone yelled “HEY! GET BACK TO WORK!!” and we both jumped and turned around and my middle school english teacher was there, with her girlfriend and a huge-ass bong, laughing her ass off and going “i’m kidding, i’m kidding! what’s up, susie?”

truly an icon, tbh

Bts reaction to you thinking you were talking to your friend

A/N: Sorry for not posting for a very long time and really  I don’t have excuses. Sooo yeaah… I blame my laziness. Thank you all for waiting for me though. I really like you all. You’re so cute. I hope you enjoy this one.

Scene: here is the thing. When you’re talkikg to a friend and suddenly your friends stops walking because he or she sees something but you don’t notice and keep talking. We all had this once right? :p

Seokjin:
“No thats not it. Yeah the strawberry one was good but I really think we should take the carrot cake. So please let’s get the carrot cake” you begged and laid your head on her shoulder for extra persuading. But once your head didn’t reach her shoulder and you were sure she didn’t wear men perfume, you jumped away and lifted your eyes. You’ve got to be kidding me! You mentally facepalmed yourself. Kim Seokjin? Really? Of all the people, him? “I’m so sorry! I thought you were my friend. This looks so weird. I’m sorry.” You apologized over and over. “ It’s okay. I Figured.” Jin laughed and patted you on your shoulder. “I think you’re right though” you looked at him weirdly. “Right about what?” You responded. “The cake ofcourse. Carrot is the best. Please enjoy it! And eat a piece for me too.” You both laughed at this and you stuck your thump up. “Seokjin Fighting!” Was the last thing you said and ran over to your friend.

“Uhm. What are you doing?” You heard a deep voice next to you. “Woaaa f/n! How do you do that??” “I’m not f/n?” You heard it again. Okay maybe you should see what is going on? “Oh my. You’re not my friend!” You said and held your hands infront of your mouth, shock written all over your face “well this is embarassing” you laughed and bowed in apology. “I’m sorry” “aaah it’s okay. You made waiting a little less boring’’ he smiled. You blushed at the sight. “’Didn’t you mistake a person once for your friend?’’ you asked him, hoping your cheeks would regain their color. ‘’No I have not’’ he immediatly answered, looking at you with a straight face. Taken aback with his quick answer, you clasped your hands together and stood up. “I.. I think.. I should go look for my friend. Stay healthy!’‘ ‘’I was just joking. Who did not mistake a stranger for their friend? People who tell you that are lying.’’ He laughed. ‘’I know exactly how you feel so don’t be embarrased and as I said earlier, you made waiting less boring.’’ You couldn’t help but blush again and smiled at the ground. ‘’Well I really think I should look for my friend. I will cheer you guys on and stay happy and healthy yeah? Bye bye!’’ you waved at him and before you turned around you caught a glimpse of his heartmelting smile.

‘’You know I hate that. I mean if people are looking at you I automatically say hi, but what pisses me off is that they turn their heads without a smile or something. Come on! you were looking at me first, just a slight smile is enough. You don’t have to greet me back if you don’t feel comfortable but a smile can, right?’’ You were ranting towards your friend about the frustration you felt at the subway this morning. ‘’Yeah I know I am not Korean but why stare? If you don’t want me to notice you staring, you actually should greet me first to make it seem like you weren’t staring.’’ You sighed. ‘’I totally, 100 % agree with you.’’ A man’s voice answered you back. Whippig your head to your side in confusing you made the discovery you have been ranting to a total stranger. You were already horrified, but once you recognized his features your eyes widened and a groan left your mouth. You faced the ceiling and literally facepalmed yourself. ‘’Aahaaa haha I am so sorry. I’m sorry you had to hear me rant about, you know. ‘’ You awkwardly laughed and apologized as you kept bowing in apology. ‘’No it’s okay. It was actually fun.’’ you looked at him confused. ‘’Fun?’’ you questioned. ‘’Aah I mean, it was refreshing, Most of the time the conversations are about me If I meet people but it was nice to hear a stranger rant.’’ He laughed while he had grabbed your hand and motioned for you to sit down. ‘’Well keep on going. I have to wait another fifteen minutes, so you can rant all you want until then.’’

‘’When you think about it, it is actually weird. In english you call a mandarin a mandarin and I mean the fruit. But Mandarin is also a language in China. Also here in Korea you have a lot of people with the last name Kim right. But where I come from Kim is not a last name but someone is actually called Kim. So I have been thinking what if a Kim is going to marry a Korean with the last name Kim? Would her full name be Kim Kim?’ That would be pretty funny.’’ you laughed, slapping your friend on her arm several times but you instantly stopped once you heard her laughing. well her would not be the right term. It would be a him. Looking up towards the source where the laugh was coming from, the wheels in your head started working when you realized you slapped Kim Namjoon’s arm. Several times might you add. Now since he seems strong you were sure it did not hurt him, heck you weren’t even hitting hard but still. If people had been filming this, this will be on the internet and people will assume you were hitting Namjoon for the wrong reasons. ‘’Well shit’’ you spoke loudly. Before you could apologize, he was already talking. ‘’Don’t you dare to apologize. I already figured it out you thought you were talking to someone else.’’ He chuckled  ‘’Why didn’t you say anything when you heard me talking.’’ You whined. He could have saved you the  embarrassment. ‘’At first I was going to tell you but once you started on the mandarin story I actually was thinking about it too and when you started with ‘Kim’ I couldn’t help but laugh to. I think it would be better if people first call her ladiesname and then her husbands.’’ He smiled. ‘’Yeah, thats a solution. eventhough it’s a bit funny, if you really love him you wouldn’t really care right?’’ You smiled aswell. Namjoon made you feel at ease and he laughed your embarrassment away.  ‘’It was nice meeting you. But I really think I should go. you know looking for my friend before she is going to report me as a missing person. Keep up the good work but don’t forget to take breaks. Army’s rather see you healty and happy and a bit less than seeing you guys everyday on tv, tired and injured.’’

You really really really wanted this book and since your friend needed a book for her essay she tacked along but once you stepped inside the store, you wanted to turn around and leave but unfortanutely for you, your friend stopped you and dragged you further inside. ‘’Can you let go please I’m bumping into a lot of people and they’re shooting me really really dark looks.’’ You complained as you once again winced when the girl you bumped into shot you a dirty look. ‘’I’m sorry but I really need this book for my essay and if we leave right now and come back in a couple of hours who knows if that book is still there. I am really sorry, I know you hate crowds, but I won’t leave your side, I will grab the book, pay for it and we will leave immediately after okay?’’She explained. ‘’’Fine but please hurry, I am already not feeling well.’’ you closed your eyes to try to calm down but when you felt your friends her hand leave yours, your eyes shot open, desperately looking for her again. ‘’Okay I am outta here.’’ turning around you tried to get to the entrance in the sea of people. Well a sea of women. ‘’I’m sorry can I get through?’’ you asked the girl who did not move an inch when you tried to get past her. ‘’No! You will have to wait till its your turn.’’ she snapped. ‘’My turn? No no no, I just want to get out of here. Get out of this freaking store?’’ You were already panicked and felt suffocated, but once this girl was just right out refusing to let you get past, plus that she was cursing at you under her breath, ticked you off. You really really wanted to get out of this store, because you already felt how your breathing became harder and people seemed to get closer and closer to you. Before you could scream, a hand circled your wrist and led you through the crowd. ‘’Seriously f/n.. You told me you wouldn’t let go of my hand.’’ you angrily spoke, letting your friend drag you out of the store since your vision was blurry from the tears. ‘’Sometimes I really don’t like you.’’ you confessed when the fresh air of outside hit your face. ‘’You don’t?’’ An unfamiliar voice asked. Your eyes traveled upwards and when they landed on his face everything seemed to click. Pointing a finger at him in understanding you said ‘’No shit this store was filled with people. Because you were there. Aaaah now I get it.’’ ‘’I’m sorry.’’ Jimin spoke softly. ‘’Sorry? No need to be sorry it’s not like you want people to follow you everywhere. it’s not your fault. Besides it’s my friends fault’’ you laughed. ‘’I just get like this in busy crowds. I just need a lot of space around me to feel comfortable.’’ You smiled at him and he gave you one in return. ‘’It’s okay, thank you for saving me.’’ you grinned while giving him a playful shove on his shoulder.

You know I never have been in love right so I really can’t describe it to you but I think that if you look at that person and you can feel your heart melting, I think it feels like nice warm water sliding down your heart. I think thats when you know you’re in love. I mean I feel like this when I look at my dog. He is so cute I just… ughh!’’ You giggled. ‘’Yeah I know I know what you’re going to say loving your dog is different than loving a person but is it really? You would want your dog to be happy right? All you want to do is cuddle the fluffball and kiss it on the nose.  You would want your dog to be happy and comfortable eventhough you’re not comfortable as long as he is comfortable. You just can’t imagine leaving your dog behind without breaking your heart. Love is love.’’ Once you were done talking about love or well your dog, you did not expect this kind of reaction. Why was your friend clapping? Did she agree? That was not possible, she is always telling you that love for your pet is different than love for a man. So you looked at your friend to see your friend turned into a male. A cute male though. You kept looking at him, you could not look away for two reasons. reason 1: you told a stranger about your love for your dog. Fine maybe just a slight obession for your dog and reason number two was that he was very handsome and that you figured it out why he seemed familiar. ‘’Hi?’’ You greeted him hesitantly. ‘’Hello!’’ He greeted you back cheerfully, shaking your hand fast. ‘’I am Taehyung.’’ He smiled and let go of your hand. ‘’I think you are right. You want your dog to be happy and comfortable around you, you want to cuddle him allday long if you could. Shouldn’t that be with your favorite person too? Wanting her to be happy and comfortable around you. To kiss and cuddle her every chance you get? It makes sense. Totally makes sense.’’

‘’Right? Right? That’s what I am telling her but she just doesn’t believe me. But I am happy I found someone who also thinks like that.’’ you smiled and laughed out of joy. ‘’Thank you Taehyung-shi. Thank you. You made my day.’’ This time he gave you his famous smile and patted your shoulder. ‘’ I should thank you. Now I know when I’m in love and thank you for keeping me company while I am waiting for my friend.’’ ‘’ I am waiting too. Do you want to see my cute dog?’’ You asked him, fishing your phone out of your pocket. ‘’Really? Can I? wait. you should see my cutie too.’’

You know I love to eat and If I were a tigh shirt and I know I am going to eat lots there is a chance that your tummy will stick out a bit if you ate to much. That’s not comfortable at all. So oversized shirts are the best. If I am wearin a tight shirt I really don’t feel comfortable and you know that. The first thing I do when I get home is get out of that shirt and slip on those comfortable loose fitting shirts. It feels nice and trendy at the same time so please stop convincing me. I know what I like. And know let’s go home we have been for over 2 hours already. I am getting tired and hungry. I know it’s weird that I don’t like shopping but I am more of a person who grabs what she needs, pays for it and leaves.’’ Just when you were about to link your arms together you felt her flinch and you hears a gasp. ‘’You don’t have to be angry just because I like oversized shirts.’’

‘’I agree with the oversized shirts but I don’t think I know you well enough to eat with you.’’  A soft male voice left her mouth. You raised one eyebrow in confusion so you turned your head to meet eyes with Jeon Jeongguk. ‘’I’m pretty sure I was walking next to my friend couple of minutes ago.’’ You told him, actually you told yourself that. He just smiled at you. ‘’I’m sorry I bored you with my story.’’ you laughed when the situation sunk in. ‘’And I’m sorry for disturbing your shopping. I really thought I was talking to my friend.’’ ‘’It’s fine. It happened to all of us once.’’ this time he chuckled and grinned at you. ‘’I should go back to my friend. Once again I am sorry. Enjoy your free time.’’ bowing at him, you turned around and made your way towards the store you passed by while talking to your ‘friend’. She must have been distracted by the pink shirt she saw in the window of the shop. ‘’Keep wearing oversized shirts!’’ Jungkook’s voice made you stop in your steps, turning around you saw him holding his thump up. you could not help but laugh as you held yours up too.

Genre: Angst

Day 1

I saw you walking towards me in class. You introduced yourself and smiled, asking to be my partner. Everyone else was looking at you like you were crazy.

Who are you?

Day 2

I had decided to ignore you since I felt like you needed something from me. I didn’t want to be used and have all the work pushed onto me.

You kept on following me around.

“What do you need Jungkook?” I irritatingly asked as I turned around, making you stop in your tracks and looking at me with wide eyes.

“I-I just want to be partners…” You looked down and I instantly felt regret for acting that way towards you. “You never have anyone to work with. I thought I could change that?” I felt myself smiling slightly.

Damn you Jungkook.

Day 6

We sat down at the rooftop of the school. You took out your history book and started flipping through the pages. “Who should we do our report on?”

“I don’t know,” I shrugged as I kept on eating my food. “You decide. I’ll do research and we can write it together.” You smiled and agreed as you looked back at the book.

I sneaked a look at you. You looked cute focusing on our project.

Flashback: Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter #34

A long time ago, we used to… get Kickstarter updates! Some were public posts and some were for backers only, but either way, we thought it would be fun to remember that time WE MADE A MOVIE!

Update #34 For backers only.

Jun 12 2013

Your wish is her shift-command. (Little computer humor for you, there.)

Dear Backers,

Back in 1996, I received an email from a 11-year-old asking me questions about my first novel, RATS SAW GOD, that had come out that year. The girl was doing a book report, and she’d gone the extra mile by tracking me down. One of her questions was, “What do you want to do next?” I replied that I was hoping to transition into the TV and film business. She responded that she’d done some film work herself.

A girl with big dreams of being an actress! How sweet! I thought to myself. I should say something encouraging!

I figured she’d been an extra in a friend’s short film, or something along those lines, I wrote back asking her, politely I hoped, what movies she’d been in.

“Waterworld,” she wrote. “Corrina Corrina. When a Man Loves a Woman.”

She was very sweet, though. She told me I should keep chasing my dreams.

Which brings us around to today’s casting announcement. Seventeen years later, I’m pleased to confirm that Tina Majorino will be returning to reprise the role of Cindy “Mac” Mackenzie.

When we began shooting Veronica Mars, I asked our casting director to track down Tina. I wanted to find out what she was up to. I learned she had just finished an indie with good buzz that was going to Sundance. The director of that indie with good buzz was a gentleman named Jared Hess, who had been a camera operator on a short film I’d directed. During the shoot, Jared had shown me some footage — five or six minutes – of a curly-haired boy dragging a GI Joe behind a school bus. He said he was hoping to make a feature film out of it. It sounded like lunacy to me – how was this going to stretch to 90 minutes?

The film turned out to be Napoleon Dynamite. I’ve never trusted my sensibilities since.

I really wanted Tina in Veronica Mars. To say I wrote Mac with Tina in mind would be an understatement. I wrote Mac for Tina, and Tina only. Veronica needed a female friend, and a Q to her Bond. Tina felt like just the sort of girl that Veronica would like and respect. I couldn’t be more pleased that she’ll be with us for the movie.

Please join me in welcoming Tina back in the comments.

T-minus-five days, and counting.

Rob

potterhead1265  asked:

You’ve been super quiet lately and I just wanted to make sure you’re okay 💖 you’re the best

Oh my goodness, yes I’m okay. Thank you for asking. I haven’t really been on Tumblr lately? I have two essay’s I’m working on, as well as two presentations, a debate, and a book report (yikes I should probably start reading the book) so I’ve been very busy, but ill start writing and posting again as soon as I get some time off.

9-year-old reporter and fourth grader Hilde Lysiak – who was told that “9-year-old girls should be playing with dolls, not trying to be reporters” – has signed a four-book deal with a major publisher! The new “Hilde Cracks the Case” detective series will be aimed at newly independent readers and will release in fall 2017. Hilde, whose newspaper, Orange Street News, covers local news in her hometown of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania and now boasts over 700 paying subscribers, is thrilled by the opportunity: “It’s amazing that after publishing my own newspaper I now get to work with Scholastic to write books that will be read by kids all around the world. I want kids who read these books to love reporting like I do.”

Hilde’s story drew national attention last fall when the intrepid young reporter was featured in publications like the Columbia Journalism Review. She even dealt with controversy in April: after breaking the news about a local murder, critics flooded her Facebook page with comments like “I am disgusted that this cute little girl thinks she’s a real journalist.” In response, the resolute Mighty Girl told her detractors, “I don’t think people should be able to decide for me who I should be and what I should be doing. I never began my newspaper so that people would think I was cute. I started the Orange Street News to give people the information they need to know.” And, she went on to challenge her critics, asserting: “If you want me to stop covering news, then you get off your computers and do something about the news. There, is that cute enough for you?”

"I want to be taken seriously,” she continued. “I’m sure other kids do, too. Grownups usually treat kids like they cannot do anything great. If adults don’t think we can do something, then it is hard for us to believe that we can. And then how will we have great things in this world?” Fortunately, the publishing world is clearly taking this talented Mighty Girl seriously. Each of the four books in her new series, which will be co-written with her father, Matthew Lysiak, will follow Hilde and her big sister Izzy as they investigate a news story in their hometown; each fictional story will be roughly based on a real story that Hilde covered for her paper.

Katie Carella, a senior editor with Scholastic, says she’s thrilled that Hilde has signed on for the series: “As soon as I spoke with Hilde, I just knew she’d be the perfect fit for Branches. Kids across the globe have reached out to her, inspired by her unflagging dedication to reporting the news. To quote Hilde: ‘You’re never too young to follow your dreams. If you take yourself seriously, other people will take you seriously, too.’”

Congratulations to Hilde on her book deal! We look forward to reading about your adventures! - A Mighty Girl

There isn’t much to report on the crush front.

Apart from the fact that we walked past each other three times before my shift even started on Sunday and I basically avoided all eye contact and verbal communication. Like an IDIOT.
SO. AWKWARD.

But I did say hey at some stage during the day. And he didn’t work yesterday, so he should be back today!

Speaking of yesterday…

One of my fellow workmates dressed up for Book Week as Rey from Star Wars! Now, I KNEW who she was dressed up as, but I just couldn’t put my finger on the name of the character, you know? (Don’t you hate when that happens..?) I wracked my brain for the first hour or so of my shift trying to figure it out, then it finally clicked. But I asked a fellow workmate and she confirmed that I was right! The only ones who actually knew who my workmate was dressed up as were myself, one of the other team leaders, and, the crush! (Somehow, he knew, even though he wasn’t there.)
I am part of the elite! I feel so special. 😋😊

Oh gosh, I do hope that he’s around tomorrow…

About the article

Right now I’m trying really hard not to punch something. Why? Because I just read the article/interwiev with Dan and Phil.
And these are my thoughts on it:

So first off, the reporter describes Dan and Phil’s audience as a cult of screaming teenage girls. One gets the impression that we’re all brainwashed, and unable to think for ourselves. This is, of course not, the matter.
A lot of people in this community are incredibly creative, innovative, kind and intelligent. We also don’t have a ‘girls only’-sign dangling over our heads; there are people of all genders among ous.
Also; not everyone who enjoys Dan and Phil’s content are teenagers. Perhaps the majority of us are teens, but there are also people over the age of 25 and people as young as 6 or 7 watching their youtube channels.

And the reason why we get excited, maybe even scream, when they get on stage? Because we’re happy, proud, and about meet our rolemodels. For a lot of people, Dan and Phil becomes like close friends; someone who always makes you laugh and smile after a rough day. But at the same time they act as someone to look up to, and 'idolize’.
All of this, at the same time as we’re sorrounded by people who share our interest and excitement; people we feel comfortable with. Of course we’ll be happy, excited, screaming, and maybe even crying.

Another important thing: Just because their main audience are teenagers, doesn’t mean they’re only famous because of good looks. We watch their content because we think they are creative, good at entertaining, express good opinions and because they make us motivated and interested in new things.

Teenagers are just as intelligent, and entitled to interests and opinions, as grown-ups.

Another thing the reporter says is that they, personally, don’t 'get it’. That is fine, and completely understandable; but it doesn’t quite work as an argument against Dan and Phil’s entertaining skills.
The show (tatinof) is designed for people who are already part of the community, and for us all those 'in-jokes’ are really funny, because they are in the show to make us laugh. The show isn’t designed for someone who’s never heard of Dan and Phil before, so obviously the reporter doesn’t understand everything it contains.

Later on, in the interwiev, the reporter starts talking about 'The Oreo lick race’. This is a video that Dan and Phil made, on Phil’s channel, that later had to be taken down because it wasn’t made clear enough that the video was sponsored by Oreo.
In the interwiev, Dan and Phil tries to explain that the video was created before there were any actual guidelines concerning advertisement and sponsored products in videos. Therefore they didn’t do anything wrong at the time the video was posted, but after the new guidelines were established 'The Oreo lick race’ didn’t quite cut it.

Even though they explain this, the reporter still makes it seem like Dan and Phil did something wrong.

And then for my final opinion: I think it was very rude of the reporter to ask Dan about his sexuality. The reporter asks Dan about the 'rumours’ saying he’s gay. This was, in my opinion, quite unprofessional. Normally they avoid questions about their sexualities, and when they do answer them it’s with quite an unpatient, irritated, approach.
Dan and Phil obviously doesn’t want to talk about they’re sexualities; and that is something that should be respected.

I also don’t think that question belonged in this interwiev, which was probably set-up because of their tour and book. To interwiew two people about their work, and then end it with the question “Are you gay?” is actually really strange, and I think the reporter was just plain nosy (and rude).

*end of rant*

  • Holt: That's actually a very difficult question. The whole show is amazing. I've been a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda since IN THE HEIGHTS. BRING IT ON, THE MUSICAL, I think, is a work of under appreciated brilliance. And I have been mulling over which is my favorite song since seeing the show last February. (Kevin and I are members of the Public.)
  • But if I were forced to choose, I would probably say "Non-Stop." Miranda does a masterful job of weaving each characters leitmotifs into a rousing crescendo that builds on everything that has happened in Act I while foreshadowing the tragic fall in Act II. You can really hear why he won a MacArthur Grant.
  • My least favorite, by the by, is "You'll Be Back." I have had that song stuck in my head for DAYS at a time.
  • Peralta: Hey, I've been "All About the Hamiltons" since 2005! I love this show!
  • My favorite was the Cabinet Battles. Those were awesome! Wouldn't it be great if interrogations were done that way? I've tried but... suspects haven't really gone along with me.
  • Santiago: "Non-Stop."
  • No, not because it's Captain Holt's favorite. Is it? I didn't know that. But I've loved Alexander Hamilton since I was a little girl. I would go to the New York Historical Society every weekend. I wrote my fifth grade book report on his biography. "Non-Stop" really captures that relentless work ethic I so admire.
  • (Oh, jeez, is it really the Captain's favorite too? Now I look like a kiss up. Maybe I should pick something else. Can I get back to you?)
  • Boyle: Well, at first it was "Schuyler Sisters," then it was "Helpless," then "Satisfied," then "Burn," then I went back to "Helpless," and then back to "Satisfied," and went back and forth between the two, and finally ended up back at "Schuyler Sisters." Really, I wish that the show was all about them.
  • I just want to know more about Peggy.
  • Diaz: This is stupid. It's a stupid question. What kinda dummy ranks songs? It's a good show, I like it, what does it matter which song is "the best"?
  • Besides, it's obviously "My Shot."
  • Jeffords: My favorite is, huh, okay, you can do this, Terry. Keep it together. It's, huh, it's "Who Tells Your Story."
  • Hoo boy. Just... when Eliza wants to show Alexander... what she's proudest of, I... just... *breaks down in ugly tears*
  • Linetti: You have to ask?
  • *pushes button on her phone, music starts playing"

Last Spring I decided to start tracking my reading. After spending my whole life guided by syllabi, how would I fare on my own? If I consider reading to be didactic as well as recreational – if reading is at once an act of rebellion and recognition – how do I shape a reading list that would satisfy all of my competing priorities?

There was a numbers question, too. I no longer had papers to write or deadlines to meet, but my tenure clock was starting and time in NYC evaporates at an accelerated rate. How many books could I read?

One year of books later, this is my progress report. Here’s what I found out:

  • I need to work on reading more POC authors. I felt like I sought out, and prioritized a diverse authorship but ultimately engaged in Juan Flores’ “canonical tokenism.” It’s also that thing where a crowd that is 17% women is perceived to be a 50/50 split between the genders. I read a few books written by POC authors and gave myself more credit than I should have. I’ll work on this next year.
  • Ditto international authors. My non-American percentage is mostly British or Canadian.
  • Non-fiction continues to be a challenge for me. It’s clear that I picked up several memoirs trying to get non-fiction credit. Still, this number is probably better than it has ever been, so that’s progress.
  • You’ll have to pry the warrior-princess, muderous-lady thrillers out of my cold, dead hands. I feel okay about the amount of Genre fiction I read. Give me all of your unsolved mysteries, your fractured folklore, your marriage plot chick lit. I have so many gloomy Saturday afternoons to fill.
  • Before counting up the books, I ball-parked the number to be around 40. It’s 63. That feels great! I would love to stay on pace this year.

All of the books are gathered chronologically in the post syllabus life tag, but here’s a vague breakdown by rank:

Required Reading

  1. The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo
  2. The Secret History by Donna Tartt
  3. Covering by Kenji Yoshino
  4. Artful by Ali Smith
  5. A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra

“You seem to have been doing well, Master Took,” said Merry. “You will get almost a chapter in old Bilbo’s book, if ever I get a chance to report to him. Good work: especially guessing that hairy villain’s little game, and playing up to him. But I wonder if anyone will ever pick up your trail and find that brooch. I should hate to lose mine, but I am afraid yours is gone for good.

"I shall have to brush up my toes, if I am to get level with you. Indeed Cousin Brandybuck is going in front now. This is where he comes in. I don’t suppose you have much notion where we are; but I spent my time at Rivendell rather better. We are walking west along the Entwash. The butt-end of the Misty Mountains is in front, and Fangorn Forest.”

Chapter 1: A Bump In The Road

“Can I see a smile on your face please?” my mom asked while driving me to school.

I eyed her for a split second before I returned my gaze back to the road. When she saw my facial expression hadn’t changed she questioned again,

“Okay, why are you in such a bad mood, missy?”

“It’s the morning, mom. No one is ever in a good mood in the morning.” I replied with a growing temper.

“Everyone, but you. You’re always in a chirpy mood in the morning. Now what’s wrong?” she demanded.

“I was up til’ 4am last night doing algebra homework, finishing a book report, and studying for three quizzes. I only had two hours of sleep. I’m tired okay? Just tired.” I replied half shouting.

“Maybe you should take a break from dancing. You’d get home earlier so you could finish your work earlier.” she replied in a soft voice, eyes not leaving the road.

“Are you trying to say I can’t handle it? Are you trying to say I can’t balance my time? Are you trying to drive me away from dancing? Well I can handle it, mom. Stop trying to think that you know what I can and can’t do. You hardly even know me at all. I can do things on my own.”

“Don’t speak to me that way. I am your mother and I do know everything about you. Now unless you still want a roof to live under, I suggest you change your attitude because I won’t tolerate ungrateful people in my house.”

Before I could respond, I realized we were already pulling up towards the driveway of my school. “Sorry.” I muttered, then slammed the door.

There was only five minutes left til’ homeroom so all of the students were packed in the hallway. There were swift-moving teens and there were also slow paced zombies joined in one busy corridor. As I made my way through the ocean of bodies, I felt my phone vibrate. I searched my trashed up bag for my cellphone.

After a good minute of standing in the middle of the hallway, jumbling through my bag I finally found my phone and saw that there was a text message from my best friend, Natalie.

Natalie: “You!! Where art thou!! I have something to tell you ;)”

Me: “I’ll be there in a second! I still need to get stuff from my locker. What’s it about??”

Natalie:”I want to tell you in person! Hurry your ass over here!’”

Me: “Hurrying!”

Just as I was about to hit send, I felt a  careless body crash into mine making me confused and suddenly angrier than I already was. The next thing I saw was my phone out of my grip and on the floor.

“Shit.” I murmured.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry. So so so so sorry.” the mystery person said while picking up my phone.

He looked up with my black iPhone in his hand. He was vigilant checking for any damage he had caused to my phone.

It wasn’t til’ our eyes met that I confidently recognized him.

“Oh it’s okay, Matt.” I said, retrieving my phone from his grasp.

“Hey, you know my name!” he replied surprisingly.

“Yeah, we had biology together last year. And it’s kind of hard to forget our football team’s star player.” I mentioned with a smirk.

He giggled, “Yeah, I remember you! It’s kind of hard to forget one of the smartest girls in class.” he replied with a wink, You’re Hailey, right?”

I nodded in response. He opened his mouth to say something, but the bell for homeroom rang and interrupted our little catching up. “Well, I’m sorry again about your phone.” he smiled sincerely.

“Yeah, no problem.” Then, I raced off towards my class room, forgetting about the stuff I had to get from my locker, because there was only one thought running around my mind, when did Matt start getting so cute?

A/N: Hiii! So this is my first imagine so don’t judge me too hard hahaha :)) If this gets like 5 notes, I’ll make the next chapter! You can message me any suggestions or what I need to improve haha :) You can also suggest a story line for this imagine cause’ I’m still not sure how this will build up! Sorry if it kind of sucks hahahaha

what's it like being a teacher on tumblr?

“Okay guys, we’re in the library today because we’re starting book reports today. You know the drill, let’s get going. Let’s try and be a little better behaved then last time, okay?”

“Fandom blog, do you think I’m too old to see the difference between a phone and a book? What are you reading?…No, I think you should show me…give me the phone…just, come on, hand it over. Oh my god. That is not a book…oh no… suitable stories please. Is that even…how do they… you know what, never mind. Only published authors.”

“Justgirlythings for the last time, I haven’t seen your eye liner pencil. You don’t need it for a book report anyway… no, you may not write your book report in- emo blog, give the pencil back to justgirlythings.”

“Guys, can we just focus on the book report, please? Thank you fandom blog, you finally chose a text… Romeo and Juliet, of course you did…”

“Hipster blog, please stop teasing fandom blog about their book report. If they think there’s a ship in their book then they can write about a ship. God only knows what boat they’re talking about. And no, you may not do the same text, ironically.”

“Wait, no, no texts posts Humour blog, and bring that note up here… thank you…guys, can you stop throwing hate messages at each other. Aren’t we all old enough to know better?…Yes Emo blog I see you, will you stop flicking the lights on and off, it’s not symbolic, it’s frustrating.”

“Come on, the book report…remember? No hipster blog, the starbucks menu is not a valid text…no you cannot just ‘add a filter’ and repost it as your own report, it doesn’t work that way.”

“Ah! Humour blog, I saw that. How many notes do you have? Bring it here…okay, I see it, but why is it a note that just says shade. Why are you throwing shade at hipster blog?”

“Finally, thank you. Now that we all have our books, does anyone know why the exchange student is asleep, it’s the middle of the day?…oh right, thank you justgirlythings… an Australian.”
