*head in hands* FUCKING SEWARD JOHNSON

You have triggered the rage within me, so now you will ALL be treated to an outside-the-readmore screed about SEWARD GODDAMN JOHNSON. 

I don’t normally attack artists because a) it scares my friends who are artists (I love you all, you are beautiful, don’t be afraid) and b) honestly most artists don’t deserve the level of vitriol I’m about to employ. I want you all to remember that the seething hatred I feel for Seward Johnson is driven in large part by class consciousness. 

But not entirely. So let’s begin. 

First what you have to know is that Seward Johnson is a “sculptor”. If you google “seward johnson sculpture” you’ll get an idea of his work, most of which is terrible. I feel okay calling his work terrible because he is also the scion of the family that founded SC Johnson Johnson & Johnson (my bad), so he has all the money he needs and could step back, do his art for funsies, and let people with actual talent or two original thoughts in their heads exhibit their art, but he doesn’t, he forces his terrible art on all of us. 

The reason I harbor such animosity towards Seward Johnson is that he has been exhibiting on Pioneer Plaza (that area north of the DuSable Bridge) for almost a decade now, and when I worked in the north loop I had to walk past his art every day. It was bad enough when the sculpture was American Gothic, rendered without talent or meaning into three dimensions and provided with luggage. 

How very fucking dare you, you talentless hack

These things are sculpted out of what amounts basically to styrofoam painted in rubberized/weatherized paint, so they are fragile, and tourists were constantly climbing on Farmer’s shoes and falling into them when they found out it wasn’t the cheap but supple fiberglass you would expect of a tacky monstrosity more suited to a roadside motel than the business district of a major metropolitan city. (I would imagine this is why Abraham Lincoln And The Mayonnaise Sandwich has a little fence around it.) 

But American Gothic Motel Attraction was mostly just annoying because it was meaningless, derivative, and CONSTANTLY covered in gawkers getting in everyone’s way. 

Additionally, Seward Johnson’s sculptures on the Plaza are very popular photo spots for tourists, who carry lots of cash and are constantly distracted, which means beginning with The Assault On American Gothic it became a very popular spot for pickpockets. Which means members of our staff, who had nothing to do with this mess, got pickpocketed as collateral damage about once a week during the exhibition of…. 

Forever Marilyn.

SEWARD JOHNSON GO FUCK YOURSELF

This is a very famous image of Marilyn Monroe which is horrifying for the following reasons that Seward Johnson appears not to have understood nor cared about:

a) The day this was shot, on an open set with people leering at her all day, her husband, professional athlete and dirtbag Joe DiMaggio, found out about the filming. Rather than comfort his wife, who had been through some shit already that day, he became angry she’d been showing her panties in public and beat her so badly the neighbors called the police on him. Joe DiMaggio also go fuck yourself. 

b) IT’S IN A MOVIE INFAMOUSLY SET IN NEW YORK. To quote a local newspaper, “Did Chicago lose a bet?”

c) Yes, you can look up and see her panties. While this is juvenile, it’s not nearly as juvenile as the literally thousand of photographs I angrily photobombed of some douchebro from Fuckville Middle America in a backwards baseball cap standing between her legs with his face tilted upwards and his tongue out. 

Oh and btw before it was unveiled it looked like this: 

For literal days, before it was installed, she had a bag over her head. (For more on this, though the pictures are now missing, you can read my reaction post here.)

In any just world, there would be a trap door between her legs and everyone who tried to do the upskirt shot would fall into a pit where they would be forced to give five dollars to women’s shelters before they were allowed to leave. THAT would have been interesting art. 

Sidebar, both as contrast and because I love it: Marilyn left a few years ago and was briefly replaced by a refreshing and beautiful piece called The Watch, by Hebru Brantley. The Watch was playful and interesting and didn’t have a single upskirt. Hebru Brantley is a wonderful artist in his own right, but he was also a welcome breath of fresh air after Johnson’s mediocre tribute to sexual assault. 

The Watch was a temporary installation, however, and eventually along came Abraham Lincoln Approves Of White Men

It is an unfortunate coincidence that Confused Closeted Republican there is wearing khakis and a white shirt, the new uniform of the alt right, and it’s also coincidence that this is facing Trump Tower, but it’s not exactly helping Seward Johnson’s cause that he chose the blandest outfit possible for Paean To Confused White Bread. The sculpture is meant to be Lincoln, the darling of Illinois, welcoming a visitor to our fair city, but it sure does look like fresh meat is about to get a free trip to Boys Town with the Sixteenth President of the United States. 

This is what I mean when I say Seward Johnson lacks not only skill but also understanding: he clearly didn’t know that Lincoln’s sexuality is under enough debate to have its own wikipedia page, and he either didn’t know or didn’t care that Marilyn Monroe was nearly killed by her husband for shooting that scene. All he cares about is image and he’s bad at reproducing image. That is not a well-executed rendering of how human beings are, and dynamically speaking it’s boring. If he were good at visuals or if he had something meaningful to say I would be less angry, but he is mediocre at best and the statements his sculptures make are banal pap if they make any at all. 

But he is rich, and I guess either he likes Chicago or he’s got blackmail on Sam Zell, owner of Pioneer Plaza, so he gets to spatter his hideous, meaningless masturbation in my city. And lest you think Seward Johnson got here on his own merits, Forever Marilyn, now on tour from coast to coast, is owned by The Sculpture Foundation, which is heavily subsidized by Seward Johnson. He basically founded a nonprofit to ensure his work gets toured around and publicized and to ensure that if no museum wants it, it has a place to go to die (Palm Springs, CA). 

In short, I hope Abe and Sweater Man are happy, because at least then something good has come out of Seward Johnson’s astounding mediocrity. That said, if you are passing his latest work, spit on it for me. As performance art.

After reading Just Hold On I was wondering what your thoughts are on Victor never calling Yuuri after the banquet in canon? If it was reversed like in your fic I would understand it since Yuuri is so insecure and harsh on himself but there wasn't really a reason for Victor not to call Yuuri again? Do you think he was scared of rejection? Do you think he assumed Yuuri didn't want him, hence making the Eros routine about the seducer throwing his lover away after a one night stand?

Hi, Nonny, I seriously doubt you wanted a whole character/motivation analysis in response to this question, but… I’m a perfectionist and obsessed with YOI, so here you go. Also, thanks so much for reading and enjoying my fic.

Upon initial viewing of YOI, I definitely thought the banquet reveal was cool as a narrative twist, but also somewhat unrealistic. You’re telling me Viktor Nikiforov, international superstar and sap, didn’t have the resources or motivation to find Katsuki Yuuri and confess his undying love?

WHOO BOY, here we go. I think Viktor not contacting Yuuri after the banquet is actually justified, which I’ll summarize:

1. Viktor is a romantic optimist

2. Both Viktor and Yuuri view themselves as ‘the pursued’ and not ‘the pursuer’ in the Eros story

3. Rejection is possibly the most immense vulnerability Viktor has

1.      Viktor is a romantic optimist

This has been heavily discussed on Tumblr, but I’m going to throw in my two cents. Let’s discuss Eros and Agape: Viktor’s two possible programs for the next season. Assuming these are about Yuuri, I’m going to propose a weird idea that this means Viktor has prepared two plans: one for if Yuuri contacts him before next season, and one for if he doesn’t.

Plan A, Agape: Yuuri contacts Viktor. Viktor skates to a program about unconditional love. In the show they talk about Agape like it’s about someone who ‘doesn’t know what love is yet.’ The someone is Viktor, and I could easily see this as his program for a season where he’s just started to experience Life and Love in a relationship with Yuuri.

Plan B, Eros: Yuuri doesn’t contact Viktor. Viktor skates to a program that seduces the entire world’s pants off. He would’ve dominated every competition, and won a mountain of gold medals; basically, he’d seduce Yuuri until the other man came back.

Note that there are only two plans here: start to experience unconditional love with Yuuri, or seduce the crap out of him until returns to Viktor. There is no third plan titled ‘Viktor Nikiforov Moves On.’ It’s get Katsuki Yuuri or bust, because Viktor is a romantic optimist.

Naturally, Yuuri throws a surprise wrench in all of Viktor’s plans by not making it to Worlds and breaking it off with Celestino, and then moving back to Hasetsu. Suddenly, Yuuri’s not his competitor; he needs a coach, just like he told Viktor in Sochi.

Even if you don’t agree with my particular strange interpretation, we know that Viktor is a romantic optimist because he fell in love with a drunkard over the course of a night and proceeded to move his entire life halfway across the world for him. All Yuuri had to do was make a romantic gesture with that viral video, from Viktor’s POV, and Viktor shoved his apartment into boxes and left Russia so fast Yakov got whiplash from watching him go.

Viktor wants that love story, but he approaches it in a roundabout way. Viktor is probably a tiny bit socially inept (again, there’s a lot of Tumblr discourse on this so I’m not going to go into it) from being a skating celebrity rather than an average human being, and he also loves grand gestures. Expressing his love through skating is THE WAY TO GO, right?? SURELY Yuuri will GET IT?

So why didn’t he just call Yuuri up, rather than waiting? What I wrote above probably contributed to his decision not to contact Yuuri, but the main reason he didn’t lies more in points two and three; I just had to establish Viktor as a romantic optimist.

2.      Both Viktor and Yuuri view themselves as ‘the pursued’ and not ‘the pursuer’ in the Eros story

Firstly, we can all appreciate that Viktuuri is a relationship which doesn’t rely on negative queer stereotypes of one person dominating the relationship, or on traditional gender roles. Viktor and Yuuri take the lead in different aspects of their relationship, and it’s incredibly healthy.

That being said, we all know that Yuuri views himself as the abandoned beautiful woman in the story of Eros… but we discover in episode 10 that Viktor also identifies that way. God, I love this show.

As far as Viktor knows, Yuuri is this unstoppable force who can royally screw up the GPF and then give Viktor the most magical, fun night the very next day. Yuuri is someone who blows Japanese nationals, loses his coach, and responds by virally owning the frickin program that holds the World Record in an extremely public and romantic display. Meanwhile, Yuuri thinks he’s an anxious, mediocre skater. In Yuuri’s head, he is the beautiful woman who initially rejects the playboy because she knows he’s going to leave her; in Viktor’s head Yuuri is the playboy who wrecks hearts and whole towns just by showing up.

Comparing their views is hilarious. Yuuri thinks Viktor is a playboy, untouchable and bound to leave him. Viktor thinks Yuuri is a playboy that’s already wooed and subsequently rejected him, which I’ll dive into in the next section. When Yuuri says he’s underconfident, that he can’t skate Eros, and panics at competitions, Viktor’s initial response is just ????????? But you are this whirlwind force of nature???? Everyone loves you????? How do I help you?????

Frankly, Viktor’s view of Yuuri doesn’t allow him to understand that this man, who seems so bold and capable of pursuing what he wants, is restricted both by his anxiety and also his lack of knowledge about the banquet. Yuuri isn’t calling Viktor? Well, Viktor’s easy to find—he’s a major presence. If Yuuri wanted him, he’d come and get him, and that’s Viktor initial conceptualization of the situation. Yuuri’s not pursuing Viktor, so he must not want him.

Another recent discourse on Tumblr I’ve seen is the idea that it’s Yuuri’s fantasy to be pursued. He wants to be attractive and irresistible and catch Viktor’s attention; of course, he simultaneously thinks he’s too average to ever do so. Yuuri thinks he’s been chasing Viktor his whole life and will never catch up; he wants to be the one chased in the end. On the flip side, Viktor is the first one to pursue: he approaches a drunk Yuuri, he takes pictures, he starts to dance with him. He likes him.

But his crush is cemented when Yuuri demands and commands his attention, essentially pursuing him. Viktor likes to be desired, likes to skate for an audience, probably is turned on by the idea that Yuuri is his fan and has always wanted him. We all know he’s the jealous type (ahem: Chihoko) and needs Yuuri’s attention in return.

Basically: both of them are Extra, and after the banquet Viktor thinks it is Yuuri’s place to pursue, wants Yuuri to pursue him, sees himself as hopelessly and attracted and wants Yuuri to signal that he likes him in return. When the viral video comes out, both of them hilariously still think the other is ‘the pursuer,’ because in Yuuri’s POV Viktor just shows up and announces his position as coach, whereas in Viktor’s POV Yuuri has (finally) put out the siren call that Viktor has been waiting for. Both of them are helplessly crushing on each other in a miscommunication of epic proportions.

Anyway. The idea of Viktor wanting to be pursued, and feeling like he’s the abandoned ‘beautiful woman’ so he doesn’t call Yuuri, leads straight into what I think is the greatest motivator for Viktor lack of contact: rejection.

3.      Rejection is Viktor’s vulnerability

Viktor is a man whose entire life, from the time he was a teenager, has been based off of seeking people’s approval. Which people? Everyone: judges, the ISU, probably his parents, Yakov, the media, the frickin whole of Russia. Viktor’s career and his existence mostly relies on approval; we all know he fears becoming someone unable to surprise, someone unable to win and gain approval from those around him. Viktor dances around the things he really wants—there’s been so much Tumblr discourse about this that I’m just going to point out the ocean scene vaguely. Rather than straight-up telling Yuuri that he wants to be his boyfriend, he proposes it flippantly and as an open question. This is how you try to avoid rejection, friends.

Anyway, going back to the main point.

This is something that I haven’t seen discussed a lot, but you have to remember that Viktor and Yuuri’s actual first interaction was Yuuri rejecting him and walking away. It’s not unreasonable for Viktor to think Yuuri is going to reject him: Yuuri does it multiple times throughout the show, though it’s likely never for the reasons Viktor thinks it is. Viktor does not cope well with rejection. He goes and gets drunkenly smashed every time he’s rejected in the show (this is more popular Tumblr discourse, so I’m not going to get into it here).

If you think Viktor has never met a fan in real-life and disappointed them before or failed to meet their expectations, you are dead wrong. He’s been an international celebrity for… what, 10 years? I’m sure at least one person, probably multiple, have rejected him upon actually meeting him because he wasn’t what they envisioned. Yuuri is a fan, and Viktor is a superstar, and while we may think it’s on Viktor to reach out and express his interest because he’s a celebrity, it’s also on Yuuri to express that he is interested in the real Viktor, the guy he danced with at the banquet.

If Viktor contacts Yuuri and is rejected—by the first person that’s really made him feel inspired and excited in the longest time—it’s all over, and in a heartbreaking way. Viktor likes to hold onto hope (optimist!), and is terrified of rejection. Note that the second Yuuri “contacts him” with the video, and seems to accept and reciprocate Viktor’s feelings, Viktor has zero reservations about going to him. Of course, when he gets there Yuuri basically rebuffs him, which is why he cries and gets savagely aggravated in the first few episodes. Alas, Viktor is still a romantic optimist (see part 1) so he sticks around and tries to feel Yuuri out. You like me, right? Look, I am sexy and I can make all your dreams come true, look at me, please don’t reject me?

Even the fact that Viktor shows up and immediately frames himself as Yuuri’s coach, something Yuuri clearly needs, asked for, and is less likely to reject, something Viktor feels qualified for, is very telling. Rather than saying I’ve been in love with you since the banquet, I’m here to give this a shot it’s I’m going to be your coach!

Just because Viktor doesn’t have anxiety doesn’t make him any less prone to fear of rejection. Fear of rejection is a human thing that we all experience. So… he doesn’t call.

One of my favorite things about their relationship is the way Yuuri handles this fear, and essentially says: I’m not going to reject you if you’re not exactly who I want you to be. You, yourself, are what I want: just be real with me.

 Yuri on Ice is a beautiful thing.

To conclude this very long rant, I’ll relate this back to my fic quickly (spoiler alert, by the way) and just say the way JHO (WGH) flips this and makes it… more angsty, rather than what happened for canon Viktor, is by relying on:

·        Yuuri is an anxious pessimist. Yuuri worries that Viktor will leave him, that this time will be just like the banquet, which is completely understandable. Viktor is a superstar and, in Yuuri’s head, he is a nobody that served as Viktor’s drunken fling for a night.

·        Yakov serving as the matchmaker, rather than Viktor calling for Yuuri. Unlike canon, Yuuri has no indication that Viktor wants him in Russia, has no idea that Yuuri is literally there for Viktor (well, not just for him, clearly he is a great skater, but that’s a major reason why Yakov took Yuuri on). This only fuels his anxiety and pessimism further.

 Basically, I write angsty fluff and overthink things. Also all of this is conjecture, so please don’t hate me.

Also: The camera switches to Dean's face. During the "I love all of you" Cas' voice is a lot more steady, he looks up to Sam (I think), but his eyes dart straight back to Dean (who seems to be trying to say something). One other thing! Cas' didn't say "I love you. All of you", she made two independent sentences, as though he tried to show that he was talking about two different things. Hello, dear! I believe you sent me two messages (because of the 2/2), but unfortunately I never received message number 1. However, let’s talk about the infamous “I love you” you mentioned in this message.  

In someone else’s post about that specific scene that I reblogged probably a day after the episode aired, I said that when Cas first said “I love you”, I understood it as his way of expressing his feelings for the three Winchesters present. However, WHY IN THE NAME OF CHUCK DID CAS FEEL THE NEED TO CLARIFY HIS “I LOVE YOU”?

The moment he said “I love all of you”, I had to stop and think for a moment. That simple sentence completely changed the meaning of the first one. It’s obvious that Cas felt he needed to clarify because the first “I love you” wasn’t clear enough. That was an incredibly ambiguous scene because there are three ways in which we could read the whole thing:

  • Interpretation 1: When Cas said “I love you” he meant the three of them, but he thought that because his history with Mary is very brief compared to the one he has with the brothers, she wouldn’t think his statement included her. That’s why he wanted to make sure she understood that he loves HER as much as he loves her sons.
  • Interpretation 2: When Cas said “I love you” he meant the three of them, but he thought that both Sam and Mary wouldn’t think they were included there because of the more profound bond he shares with Dean. That’s why he wanted to ensure that all three Winchesters knew they mean a lot to him, not just Dean.
  • Interpretation 3: When Cas said “I love you” he said it for Dean, but then he wanted to extend the feeling to the rest of his family because he wanted them to know the three of them were important to him.

The audience was in charge of deciding which interpretation they preferred. The people who can’t pick up on any kind of subtext probably thought the first “I love you” was for Dean and Sam and the clarification was meant to include Mary. On the contrary, the biggest Destiel shippers probably picked the third interpretation, the one in which the first “I love you” was meant for Dean.

Although the three interpretations are equally valid, the first one makes more sense only in text. When you watch the scene, though, the third interpretation is more logical. Why do I say that? It’s just that when Cas starts giving his speech, he has no trouble looking at the three Winchesters. His eyes go from Sam to Dean to Mary and over again. He doesn’t keep eye contact with any of them for too long but looks at the three of them. Even when he says, “You’re my family”, he looks at Sam, then at Dean, then at Mary, but then he does this:

He can’t meet anybody’s eyes! Why does Cas avoid eye contact?

Besides, as you pointed out, the camera immediately switches to Dean. Why? Why would they do that?

When Cas says “I love all of you”, he doesn’t look at the three of them as he did when he said they were his family. He just briefly looks at Sam and then keeps eye contact with Dean like this:

And Dean’s reaction? He looks like he just figured out what Cas meant (just as the rest of us did):

If we just read the transcript of the episode, we may interpret Cas’ lines differently. The thing is that the camera shots, Misha’s and Jensen’s acting choices, all that contribute to a Destiel-friendly interpretation of the whole thing. 

Let’s also remember that only two episodes before, Dean was kinda established as Castiel’s human weakness (AGAIN). Just two episodes before we learned that angels can have feelings for humans.

In conclusion, we’re not delusional. We’re just reading the signs that the writers, directors, actors, and editors are putting there.

If people decide they prefer interpretation 2 that I mentioned above, it’s still Destiel-friendly. It still means Cas himself thinks that if he says “I love you” when Dean is present, people won’t include themselves in the statement because they will think that Cas means only Dean. Cas feels he needs to clarify who he means because people will associate Cas’ I love you to Dean for default.

Personally, I’m OK with interpretations 2 and 3, but I’ll stick with the third one because it’s the one that makes more sense when you’re actually watching the scene without wearing heteronormative goggles.

A mischievous kid growing up into a boy who enjoys reading 

I was born in Daegu in the South, the third biggest city of Korean, and grew up there until I came up to Seoul. When I was young, I was pretty much an ordinary kid. I loved playing around so my kindergarten teacher didn’t seem to like me. (laughs) I remember being scolded “It’s dangerous!” a lot. I also loved sports and was good at running, to the point of being picked as a relay runner from elementary school all the way up to high school. When it comes to studying, I’m slightly above average. 

I used to love playing outside with friends back then, but I changed as I grew up. Even when we went outside, it wasn’t like we did anything, we just gathered at the park. I wasn’t fond of that so many times I just stayed at home on weekends. My mother told me to go outside and meet my friends sometimes. (laughs) 

I had a thing for collecting, so I collected a lot of books when I was young. It was a time when I wanted to be a cultured man, wanted to pretend I know things too. Mature stuffs that didn’t suit my age or novels, poetry books, essays, newspapers,… I read everything regardless of genre. I don’t know why but up till middle school, I had the habit of reading books from the back page. I still read books sometimes now. My reading speed gets faster by reading multiple sentences at a time. 

Memories of first love from elementary school… I really don’t have any. Unlike Seoul, the provinces are conservative, and my school didn’t have that kind of atmosphere in which boys and girls talk to each other. If I was with a girl, I would become really shy and wouldn’t even say a word. 

The encounter with hip hop
Started composing in middle school 

I started to be interested in music in 5th year of elementary school, while watching the performance of “Stony Skunk”, Korean artists, on TV. It was the prime of ballad back then so if 18 teams perform on a music program, 10 would sing ballads, 5 would be idols and the other 3 would be other genres. They were one of those 3 teams. It was so cool how they were different from other singers. Up until then, I didn’t have any interest in music, but with Stony Skunk, I started listening to hip hop and reggae music, and was influenced by Epik High as well. MP3 player was starting to come out at that time, but I bought a Panasonic CD player and listened with that. 

Along with listening to music, I also started writing music at the same time. It wasn’t like someone told me to do it, I just had the thought of having to do so. I started writing rap lyrics in elementary school and started composing after I went to middle school. Back then, no one around me liked hiphop… It became extremely popular in Korea now but when I first started listening to it, hip hop was a genre once popular a long time ago. I think there probably wasn’t anyone on the streets who raps, except for me. If I rap at the karaoke room, it would just become some kind of sound to my friends. You know the moving hand gestures that are hip hop’s specialty? I was picked on for that too. 

Despite that, I still kept liking hip hop and in my 2nd year of middle school, I went on the stage for the first time at a festival. I performed Dynamic Duo’s “Go Back” with a friend. I didn’t like standing in front of people, but at that time, I only felt like I have to do it. I showed the rap that I practice too, although it wasn’t anything great. (laughs) 

 Actually in middle school, I wanted to go to an arts high school so I composed classical music. But the tuition was too expensive so I ended up just going to a regular high school. I told my father “I have done enough music now so I’ll study hard in high school” and went to that school, but of course I didn’t. (laughs) 

Full-fledged activities as a rapper after joining a crew in town 

Middle school years was when I composed music to satisfy myself only, on a hobby level. It was after I changed the MIDI software that I started full-fledgedly making music. In 1st year of high school, I showed my song to a person that was like a mentor to me, and he liked it a lot. I was introduced to a hip hop crew called “D-town” and joined. That song had the feeling of new-age music but had hip hop beats similar to Nujabes. For your information, the mentor that acknowledged me studied at Berklee College of Music and is currently working as a movie music director.

I think I started rapping properly after joining the crew. I have been rapping since elementary school, but since there wasn’t anyone who raps around me, I thought I was the best. (laughs) 

After that, I came to the Daegu underground scene, and from then, I also got to know that you can’t make a living out of music in the underground scene. Most of the hyungs who made music with me that time was about 10 years older than me, there were also people over 30. They worked part-time jobs and made music at the same time, but it seemed very hard. Even when performing live, it was already a huge deal to have 100 audiences, and I hated that fact. I thought “If I success, could I be the liaison of the underground scene?”. There are plenty of people who make good music in the underground scene, so I thought when I become famous, I want to create a better environment for them, I want to show their music to the world. 

Just then, I knew Big Hit was holding an audition in Daegu. I came there knowing nothing but that it was a company formed by composer Bang Shihyuk, but I was told that I was accepted the next day. I heard it later that when he saw me, he immediately thought of letting me pass. Even though I wasn’t good at rapping that time. (laughs)

I came to Seoul on November 7th, 2010, when I was in 2nd year of high school. I still remember it now. 

I joined to company not to rap, but to become a composer. So I thought I didn’t need to dance, and let people who are good at rapping rap, I just needed to follow the producer path. But it became a totally different thing. (laughs) At that time, rather than idols, the company was planning to create a group consisting of rappers, but that changed. The members were Rap Monster, J-hope and me. There were also Supreme Boy, i11even-hyung who is now active in the underground scene and Iron-hyung who made it to the finals of Show Me The Money 3. I think if we debut like that, despite being good at rapping, we would fail. (laughs)

My 4-year-older brother plays a very big role in letting me be able to walk on the music path like this. He started liking hip hop under my influence, but when I came to the audition, everyone in my family opposed it except for my brother. They didn’t view music activities nicely, even my relatives told me “What music for you, go study.” So I only showed my songs to him. He was the first person I informed that I passed the audition too. Our relationship is so good that we’re like friends. I basically don’t drink alcohol, but I drink it with him only. 

My family all support me now, of course. Even the relatives that told me to study ask for my signatures. (laughs) 

These days, I have thoughts about wanting to also be active as a producer. I have no greed of being in the center, I just want to make music. I don’t have interest towards the entertainment world too, everyone says they want to act, or to go on variety shows, but I don’t want to do those. (laughs) But still, the first thing is to make BTS get 1st place in Korea as well as Japan. And myself too, I want to be the best rapper, the best producer. I don’t know if it would take time, but I have to try.

I think a big problem is people think that Yuuri wanted to retire. He didn't. He never did. He thought he was doing the world of figure skating a service by retiring, and Victor at first was his chance to end it on a good note. Through the series part of his arc is him accepting and admitting "I want to go on. I don't want to give this up." I think that's part why he cries during the airport scene. Victor saying "I hope you never retire" was the first time someone prob said that to him post gpf.

Yep. I remember a lot of people thought the series would end with both of them retiring and leaving the skating world, and that entire time I was like “but Yuuri doesn’t actually want to retire? That’s not a happy ending at all.”

Yuuri thinks he does because his mind plays tricks on him, but the truth is that he wants to keep skating, he’s always wanted to keep skating. Yuuri’s never loved skating as much as he does in the series, and he is getting better and challenging himself and is improving more and more. And he knows this. He just has to realize he’s worth it.

Follow up to your Alex post, I think it is also essential for people to remember who Alex Danvers is. She's not just a sister & a daughter, she's a highly trained military agent, at the top of her abilities, second only to J'onn(a powerful alien). Alongside her high intellect, she is trained to kill, torture, lie, and read patterns in body language. At one time she says "I know a lot about people, I wish I didn't". She's aware of what she can do, and how that gradually shifts her personality.1/

We saw Alex “reacting” because it’s what she was trained to do, and killed Astra without a second thought. We saw her losing her shit and torturing that CADMUS guard. She had no issue to lock up Max even without hard evidence. She went rogue, even though she has taken an oath. Every single one of those was to protect someone she loves, not for the greater good. 2/

If Alex was to sacrifice someone she loves to save the planet, she is not the noble hero who would save the planet, she would save her loved ones first. She would sacrifice herself to save others though(because she is a blob of jelly inside). DEO is sketchy and Alex is aware of that, and she still participates willingly, because it provides her the power she needs to protects those she loves, and of course having the power she does busts her ego too. That says a lot about her character. 3/

She enjoys the power, way more than we get to see. Especially the power that is not revolving around Kara. Like when she went after Mon-el in 2x03 and Kara called her dummy for going alone, and Alex was not pleased with that, telling her she would have done her job, mocking a “yes ma'am”. She is annoyed that Kara bosses over her, but she doesn’t really care at the same time.4/4

Heh. So I’ve said before that I will not reblog certain Alex gifsets (the torture scene from 2x15 in particular) because I do not like how fans have glorified her violent behavior. I know people who work in these kind of professions in real life, and wanton extrajudicial torture is not cool. It’s not sexy. It’s not admirable. It’s inhumane and it’s wrong, end of story. And the fact that it’s been turned it into some kind of ~fun joke disgusts me. So does the hot new trend of writing “punch me/step on me/choke me” in your tags on a post where the character is being physically abusive. We’ll be having none of that over here in this corner of tumblr dot com!

IN ANY CASE, you are correct. Alex possesses a whole lot of skills that are, in fact, scary when you stop and think about them. This is one of the most interesting things about her, actually: she draws in and holds her own with some of the most powerful beings in the universe and is completely unassuming about it. It’s kinda like how Harry Potter was able to get the philosopher’s stone because he wasn’t actively trying to plot world domination.

Alex is very much heroic in that she is a self-sacrificing idiot when it comes to the people she loves, but she can also be ruthless and tunnel-visioned in a way that does not a good hero make, and this is where the fascinating gap lies between her and Kara.

Kara looks up to Alex in the adorable way that many a younger sibling does, but this also means Kara has a gaping blind spot when it comes to understanding Alex’s motivations for doing what she does. Kara has a nasty tendency copy/paste her own values onto everyone else unless forced to do otherwise, and the show has set up this conflict in both S1 and S2 but failed to execute it properly. Alex tends to come off looking heroic because her personal goals and her professional goals usually match up. But if they don’t? She will pick her personal interests every time, usually with the rationale that doing things her way will ultimately benefit her professional interests down the line. (And this is almost always the case within canon. See: Black Mercy, Astra, arresting Max, going after Kara in the fight club, Cadmus explodey times.)

Kara, however, hasn’t quite realized that Alex does not actually share her principles, because 99% of the time when Alex is tossing her professional code of ethics to the side it’s for Kara’s benefit.

I’m not sure I agree about 2x03 being a demonstration of ego/power trip, because that scene can also be read as Kara being kind of arrogant for assuming she needs to be there to do the day-saving. Alex is annoyed because she was perfectly capable of doing her job back when Kara didn’t know she was doing it, but now all of the sudden she should wait around for the superhero? Plus, factor in the sibling dynamic here. Telling your big sister what to do when she hasn’t asked for your opinion is a no-no.

Also, your point here is countered by all the fight training scenes in S1. Alex says flat out that she hated it when J’onn forced her to show up Kara and kick her butt.

Alex likes being recognized for her competence by people whose opinions she values. That’s not the same thing as feeling superior.

DON’TS:

  • “their tongues battled for dominance” (what are we?? 7??)
  • idk abt you, but i don’t know a lot of ppl who moan when kissing…. like mayb it is a thing, but also mayb leave the moaning for when they’re getting rlly frisky
  • focus just on tongues
  • explore their mouths……. we aren’t nicholas cage looking for treasure k? keep mouth exploring to the minimum NO MOUTH EXPLORING
  • just focus on the mouths and the faces and stuff (kissing involves other things)
  • don’t be Too Complex…. like suddenly their head is turning which way.. and their arm is Where? and they…… is this anatomically impossible? make sure stuff is logical, in sequence and Natural

DO’S:

  • talking!! lil broken up bits of conversation, kind of like “where do you wanna go?” *kiss kiss* “bed?” “bed.” *kiss kiss* idk, that’s just an example, but it’s difficult to keep people interested if it’s just a description of the character’s tongues
  • laughing!! omg there’s so much laughing and giggling involved… mayb this depends if your characters have just met or if they’ve been together a long time, but lil moments of actual Connection = gd
  • awkwardness and fumbling… “oops was that a boob grope, sorry, are we at this level yet???” again, depends on what stage of relationship we are talking here but, do they know each other? which way they lean? how much tongue they like? etc. it’s all part of figuring it out
  • the lips!! lips r Important. biting on them, if they have dry lips or soft lips, tugging on them, accidentally biting them, lips moving instead of tongues, idk but lips = Important in kissing. don’t forget abt them
  • have a little build up… like the reader needs to Want them to kiss….. it’s like a will they/won’t they situation, except they Know they will and they Want it 
  • KISSING INVOLVES OTHER THINGS: hands??? where are they?? face cupping = not always a good choice (in my personal kissing experience). are they touching the butt?? (insert age appropriate nemo meme) are they groping each other?? are they groping each other with Experience?? where is this headed?? is it a peck on the lips, but they want more? a brush of the corner of the mouth? full on Heated Make Out Sesh straight out of Angus Thongs?? remember kissing isn’t just ppls’ mouths touching.. everything touches! kissing the neck? the forehead? the cheek? thighs? go wild, but don’t forget about the rest of the body attached to the mouth :):
  • w/ me it’s usually not just abt kissing…. like, does this mean that they’re going out now? they’re having a one night stand? they’re trying new things? they’re used to just being friends? idk, but be inside the character’s head too! not just the kissing but the Feelings and Emotions the kissing leads to
  • draw on your own experience! kissed some people? watched some films? seen that one couple at school who like to make out during lunch? cringed at that couple who just met each other off the train at the station and are now trying to procreate against that pillar? (fic kissing is a bit like fanon….) whether you’ve kissed someone or just seen it, draw on that experience for movement/feeling/surroundings/naturalness etc.
  • does their breath smell? do their teeth knock (usually only when v Heated, and even then not often)? do they Hate lip tugging and the other person does it? do they have braces? have they kissed anyone before? just think about ur character and the setting for a bit, and try to let it come across in the kissing.. i.e a shy character might be nervous abt kissing someone for the first time etc. etc. 
  • have fun with it! <3

There are so many things I love about Skin Deep and Rumbelle.

But one of my absolute favourite twists on OUAT is that their Beauty and the Beast story starts with ending a war. I… can’t really explain why, but the idea that Beauty in this story is not simply making a deal with the Beast to save her father (or -in some versions-  is basically being sold by her father who already made the deal with the Beast so he would let him go home), this Beauty is a peacemaker. OUAT’s Belle is a nobelwoman in a town under siege. A nobelwoman in a war council room, who is kind and gentle but at the same time has this incredible strength to her. She is someone who is not just capable of finding solutions that others wouldn’t have thought of (in this case summoning the Dark One) she is also the person who is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her people. The stakes are much higher than in any other BatB adaptation I know and that just gives this really interesting vibe to that very first scene. 

But it’s not just that it made (at least to me) Belle someone who is instantly a fascinating character. I also love how the Ogre Wars are something that played an extremely important role in both Rumple’s and Belle’s lives. 

I mean, here we have these two people who couldn’t come from more different backgrounds, born 300 years apart… and yet… war brings them together, in a way. The same kind of war, that so long ago ruined Rumplestiltskin’s life and ultimately made him who he is (after all if there were no Ogre Wars, he wouldn’t have become the Dark One). 

But it’s also interesting what kind of role they played in the Ogre Wars. Rumple was a soldier, who suffered because the nobels who ruled that territory (probably) couldn’t care less for their subjects. Rumple in that situation didn’t have any power or privilege. 300 years later he is the one with all the power, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he finds himself fascinated by- and later falls for this young noblewoman, who is willing to give up all her privilege and her freedom to save her own subjects. Belle becomes what Rumplestiltskin once was (a peasant/servant, someone whose life is basically in the hands of their master(s)) -what fate he later escaped from!- willingly, so she can save people like Spinner Rumple and Bae. And I don’t think that’s something Rumplestiltskin saw many times in his long life. 

There are many important things about Rumbelle, and the Ogre Wars being a shared experience (even if from totally different POV’s - but imo, that’s what makes it interesting) is probably not one of the most important ones. But damn, it’s fascinating.

  • “What do I tell him?” I said to Sheri asked as we walked down the corridor of Liberty High’s student filled hallways. “The only thing you can tell him is the truth girl don't sweat it he won't even be upset” Sheri replied. “You know what you're right I just have to tell him the truth” “Good luck girl, I have to go to tutoring in the library I'll see you later,” and with that, she left. I took a deep breath as I walked into my third period knowing I would see Monty. “Hey, babe” Monty greeted me with a hug and a quick peck. “Hi Mon, how was practice?” I asked him as we walked over to our seats. “Good, there’s no way we won't beat the Tigers at Friday night's game” I cringed at the name of the school we were versing this upcoming weekend. “You okay?” he asked me after he saw the face I made at his statement “Yeah baby I'm fine, hey do you want to hang out after practice today?” “Yeah sure, but only if you help me with my homework I have to get my grades up before this game” “Of course baby” I gave him a quick kiss on the lips before turning around in my chair as the bell rang signaling that class was starting. Throughout the rest of the period and the day, I could not stop replaying the scene in my head of that day Sheri asked me to go to the mall with her so she could get an outfit for the party after the game on Friday that was going to be most likely at Bryce's house whether our team wins or not there’s always a party so I agreed. I decided to buy a new dress that fit my body perfectly to wear to the party knowing it would drive Monty crazy hoping it would lead to something more we haven't had sex in a couple weeks since he's been practicing and studying so much to keep his grades up. As me and Sheri walked through the mall a couple of girls walked up to us confused I asked: “Can I help you?” “Yeah, actually you can tell De La Cruz that I'll be at the game Friday and he knows where to find me” the one in the front replied flirtatiously. “Excuse me do you know Montgomery?” “Do I know him?” she laughed back, I furrowed my eyebrows still confused “I still don't know what you're trying to say” “I know him pretty well actually we hooked up after the game last year” finally realizing she was a Tiger cheerleader. By now I was angry of course I knew that Monty had hooked up with a lot of girls, but never thought I would have a run-in with one of them. “Y/N let's go she's just another one of his hookups she doesn't mean anything" Sheri said while trying to pull me away, but I didn't move instead I decided to fire back at the girl "You might have hooked up with Montgomery last year, but not this year he will be leaving with his girlfriend" putting emphasis on girlfriend getting ready to walk away, but the girl kept going "We'll see about that once he sees me and remembers our night with my hands running all over his abs and leaving wet sloppy kisses down his chest-" before she could say anything else I slapped her. I was surprised at my actions I never got mad that fast or would even think about hitting someone, but I was tired of her talking about MY boyfriend like that Monty was a different person now and everyone could see that. “Okay let's go NOW” Sheri said as she pulled me away from the now red faced girl “What happened back there?” “I don’t know I guess I got jealous” “You guess? I've never seen you like that you're always so nice to people” “Oh god, I feel like Monty I don’t go around hitting people or fighting at all he does. What am I gonna tell him, Sheri?” “Don’t worry about it just tell him after school tomorrow”. For the rest of the night and that day I tried to come up with a thousand ways on how to tell my boyfriend I slapped one of the girls, he had previously hooked up before. Would he want to leave me? Think I was some crazy jealous girlfriend? I was pulled out of my thoughts by a knock on my bedroom door. I opened it revealing a tired and sweaty Monty “Hey” he said as he entered my room with a signature hug and kiss. He walked over to my bed pulling out his homework he looked up when he realized I hadn't moved from the doorway “What's wrong? Are you okay?” he quickly got up walking over to me “Can we talk about something?” “Of course” he started to become nervous. After, telling him what happened I tried to read his face for an answer, but nothing “Can you say something?” I demanded more than questioned “I’m just surprised usually you're the one stopping me from hitting a kid if he looks at you the wrong way” “I know I was surprised too so you're not mad?” “No why would I be mad? Summary: It’s not entirely self-centered to seek comfort for yourself if you’re also checking up on someone else.


It was a thought that only had just now crossed her mind as Kimberly slid her fingers under the small crack between window and sill as she eased said window up. There was a fine line between breaking and entering and checking up on someone she cared about. Breaking and entering was more something along the lines of what a thief would do. Some random stranger would obviously cause harm. She wouldn’t.

Although, scaling the side of Trini’s house to the attic and quietly slipping inside of her room was, in fact, probably pretty illegal.

Considering that there had been no forewarning.

And now that she was inside of the room, plaster swept up into a corner, gaping holes staring back at her, she realized this was probably a bad way of checking up on someone in the middle of the night just because she couldn’t sleep.

The last time somebody had done this, it had been Rita.

That was only a week ago.

Trini still had the bruises on her neck.

Too late now, to rethink her decision.

Both feet were firmly planted on the floor.

It was kind of selfish, though, to barge into someone’s room with the pretense to check up on them.

5. Episode 2, Yuzu and Yuya’s action duel

Okay I know this is pretty early in the series and it can be seen as platonic, but you get so much character from this scene and grounds of a solid friendship between them. Like:

Yuzu’s getting shit because she was rude to Yuya like some of the fandom does to her lol but instead she just goes with it.

Like at this point of the story we now know both Yuya and Yuzu are entertainers, and now we get to see them doing what they love together and how they work off each other.

Not to mention this scene is funny as hell. Like wow it’s just showing us two cuties performing together (granted it’s not perfect because Yuya’s in funk atm) and I already fell for their dynamic at this point and its only ep 2. 

ALSO they fucking used Plain Plain (where this duel took place) in episode 141 to rip my god damn heart out and to show this duel had meaning and we should realize that we’re missing Yuzu.

4. Yuya is PISSED/cry baby (eps 50 + 51)

At this point in the show we’ve gotten a good basis on their relationship. Yuya and Yuzu are childhood friends with the same goal and they inspire each other to become stronger. Pretty standard and honestly nothing new.

And then they get separated.

Like I did NOT expected them to act the way they did when this happened (at least Yuya because when has a main protag ever cared that much for the female protag minus Anzu from season 0)

I am 98% sure that this is the first time Yuya has cried openly to people without his goggles AND ITS CAUSE OF YUZU. This boy has hidden his emotions about his dad, his bullying, and pendulum summoning but Yuzu’s apparent capture is what got Yuya to finally show his sadness and not cover them with jokes and his goggles.

Yuya as we know, when he’s not berserker, is a pacifist but he’s going out of character because he’s so mentally distraught and sad. Like the only person I would get like that for is my twin so to me this speaks volumes since Yuya values Yuzu’s well being over his own values.  

And then in Yugioh it’s a known thing that the female protags most times stay on the side line and cheer on the main protag AND THEYRE ACTUALLY ACKNOWLEDGING IT AND IT’S SUPER IMPORTANT TO YUYA. Like apparently Yuma’s says something similar to Kotori near the end of Zexal but I’m not there yet but like this is ep 50 compared to 140-something.

Looking back this is super important. Like when Zarc got revived he stated he was surprised/thrilled that there was more to Pendulum Summoning than he first thought (combining all the three methods w/ it) and the reason Yuya was able to do it was because of Yuzu. He was able to go beyond Zarc’s expectations and plans BECAUSE OF YUZU.

God when has a main protag screamed out a female protags name like that before in yugioh??? 

Yuzu is also a cry baby three episodes down the line.

3. Yuzu saves Yuya from Zarc

It speaks volumes when nearly all your friends (including your bff THE MAN Gonzengaka) can’t save from Satan, but the moment you say one sentence to you, you regain some control.

Like god, I love their relationship. Zarc and Ray are literally trying to destroy the other but these two can break through their previous lives soul’s to communicate with one another cause of how god damn much they mean to each other.

Listen if you go across DIMENSIONS to get save someone in Yugioh YOU KNOW your ship is real (Spiritshipping and Keyshipping being the other prime examples). But like in my fruitshipping video (which ya’ll should watch) this moment is when I used the lyrics ‘no distance can ever keep us apart’ because WOW dimensions AND demonic/angelic possessions isn’t enough sever the bond between these two.

2. Yuya summons Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon

Lowkey this moment is up so high because Yuya’s just fucking amazing in this scene. Like Zarc’s influence is getting stronger but like LIST OF THINGS THAT HAVE CAUSED YUYA SO GO BERSERKER 

-Ep 39 with Zarc’s trigger words and Yuya didn’t even remember it

-Yuto’s memories of being attacked the Academia 

-Being electrocuted in the god damn brain

-Being in the same area as all four boys that causes a hole to open in the sky

-Creepy old guys touching Yuzu

Like one of these things is not like the other lol

Seriously though, the others are near close to psychological torture and PTSD but someone touching Yuzu inappropriately invokes the same amount of rage from Yuya. THATS A HUGE ASS COMPARISON. Also the scene was gorgeous god damn.

1. Yuzu inspires Yuya during Friendship Cup

Okay this moment…THIS is when Fruitshipping went from a casual ship to god damn otp for me.

So for the past couple eps, Yuya has been feeling like shit (ground facility, losing Jack, missing Yuzu), of course Yuzu doesn’t know some of bad shit that’s going on, but goddamit the citrus is going to show the tomato that she’s okay.

Like dueling for other people is nothing new to yugioh but holy SHIT

Of course Yuzu doesn’t know the cost of losing, but all she wants to do is make Yuya feel at ease (which the poor boy hasn’t felt in so long fuck)

Yuzu hasn’t spoken to Yuya this entire arc but she knows how he’s feeling right now. She knows Yuya. This just furthers the belief that they’ve known each other for so god damn long and are ‘irreplaceable’ to one another.

Look at how goddamn surprised he is. Like instead of worrying about herself, she’s worried about him?? Granted this might have to do with Yuya’s self worth issues And as the duel goes on, it’s not just her feelings she trying to convey to Yuya (hot-blooded and shivers). Instead of ‘oh look it’s your love-interest’s feelings’ she shows that everyone from back in Standard are also with Yuya.

ALSO THEY PLAYED YUYA’S THEME DURING THIS GOD. EVEN THE OST’S ARE SHOWING US THEIR RELATIONSHIP.

LOOK AT HOW GOD DAMN HAPPY HE IS. LIKE WHEN HAS THIS BOY EVER CRIED FROM JOY SO FAR IN THIS SHOW. THIS IS DEVELOPMENT THAT HE SHOULDN’T HIDE HIS EMOTIONS AND SHOULD EMBRACE THEM AHH.

Just…fuck me. 

So I think it’s fair to say that Exodus has definitely been one of the better episodes of season 2. I wanted to get that out right away because overall, I really liked that episode and it felt very reminiscent of season 1.

Which leads us to the ending scene in Kara’s apartment with Kara and m*n el. There was a lot that I take issue with. Because every ending scene with those two, for the last several episodes, always erases what we’ve learned. The messages of those scenes completely go against what the audience learned that episode and they’re also the reasons I never play the last five minutes when I rewatch. Not that season 2 has many episodes I’d ever want to watch again.

2x11 Martian Chronicles: In the episode, Kara has valid points for not wanting to be with him and she lists them. They’re not compatible, she doesn’t want to date someone like him, etc. And everything she says is true. And at the end of the episode, we have a great Danvers sisters scene where Kara reveals her very real fears about Alex slipping away from her (something we see consistently throughout the episode) and that being the reason she wanted to go all out for Earth birthday (to remind Alex how much fun they have together). Kara’s fear of losing Alex is Kara’s plot the entire episode! And the fucking writers, two seconds after her confession, have Alex try to turn it around and say that the real reason Kara was so focused on her birthday was because she was trying to not focus for her feelings on mon ew? Does that actually make any sense? Because Kara’s sudden confusion about how she really feels does not. In canon, Kara knows what she feels. She knew she liked James and Adam. She knew she did not like Winn in a romantic sense. So having Kara say she’s confused, she doesn’t want to face her feelings for man pain and then being upset when he’s going on a date with someone else? It falls flat and I don’t buy it for a second.

2x12 Luthors: I love this episode. There is no denying at this point that I’m probably in love with Lena Luthor. For many reasons. And yet again, I’m never going to watch those last five minutes because it is just so wildly out of place. Just as every scene with Kara talking to/about m*nel in this episode. The entire episode is Kara defending Lena. Kara trusting Lena. Kara literally fighting for Lena. They are great scenes and it brought back a little bit of that self-assured Kara we love. So having all those scenes of Kara viciously protecting Lena the whole episode and the writers then choosing that same episode to end with Kara saying she does like m*nel and wants to be with him? It’s not only extreme emotional whiplash, it’s completely laughable and honestly this was the worst episode for the writers to have put that scene because after seeing the intensity Kara defended Lena with, Kara saying she wants to be with someone who isn’t the person she spent all episode fighting for is just ridiculous. Frankly, I’m still convinced the writers just had little snippets of karamew dialogue they wanted to use at some point, opened up any episode script, and just cut and paste scenes into random locations because that’s how forced and out of place it was.

2x13 and 2x14: I can group these nauseating episodes because it’s the same thing over and over again isn’t it? Kara asks Mr. Misogyny to do something, he completely disrespects her wishes and does what he wants instead, and the ending scene? Aw, all is forgiven and everything is okay and look at how cute they are?????? *vomits*. They don’t talk about the very real problems in their relationship, the fact that he has no respect for her and what she wants but who cares because his horrifying behavior is still rewarded by getting the girl every time! #relationshipgoals am I right? No.

2x09 and 2x10 could probably have their own discussion too but this is already too long and the more I think about him, the bigger my headache seems to get… I’m sure it’s a coincidence, though.

Which, finally, brings us to 2x15 Exodus.

Again, loved this episode. We’re finally getting back to an actual plot with Cadmus and even got to see more about the Alien Registration. We got a fantastic Danvers sisters scene, amazing Alex and J’onn scenes, some real cute Sanvers, reporter Kara was back, they remembered James existed, m*new was in the background where he fucking belongs (even though he should be off the show completely), Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher were in the same episode though sadly didn’t interact (as were Teri Hatcher and Brenda Strong), and Lena Luthor(!!!<3) was back and holy shit, am I still flailing over those supercorp scenes! So yeah this episode was awesome.

And then came the end scene in Kara’s apartment with Kara and m*nel. Are you sensing a pattern here?

First of all, I wanted it to be Alex at the door. It should have been Alex because those two almost lost each other again in a way that is incredibly similar to Kara almost dying in space after pushing Fort Rozz away from Earth and Alex going into space to bring her back. So yes, it should have been Alex. But I knew it wouldn’t be, not while m*nel is on the show.

The first line I have issue with is “Supergirl is what I can do. Kara Danvers is who I am.” And before you say anything, yes I know it’s an easter egg. I know it’s a famous quote from The New Adventures of Superman and when you have both Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher in an episode, how can you not have a quote from that show? And for Superman, it’s a great quote. It absolutely works for him because he has two sides that are so different.

It does not work for Supergirl. Because while Supergirl is what she can do, she’s not Kara Danvers. Not really. She is Kara Zor-El, a Kryptonian through and through. Kara Danvers is the persona she took on at 13 years old to make sure no one found out who/what she really was. Both Supergirl and Kara Danvers’ secret identity is Kara Zor-El. So her saying “Kara Danvers is who I am”? It’s false and out of character and the writers should have chosen a better quote but their laziness is not really a surprise anymore.

And now the line that got a lot of people heated: “Maybe being Supergirl and having you is enough” is just ludicrous. And good God, the writers truly outdid themselves here because not only does this sentence completely erase what they just established 10 seconds ago (I agree with Supergirl being what she can do but not who she is) but it goes against everything we’ve learned about Kara since the pilot. The whole first season, she’s trying to balance being Kara Danvers and Supergirl. She doesn’t just want to be Kara Danvers anymore and she doesn’t only want to be Supergirl. She wants both. And it’s difficult and we see her struggle throughout the season with those sides of her life but she keeps on going because to her, it’s so worth it. She gets to help people no matter which identity she’s under and that’s all she’s wanted. So no, her settling for being Supergirl just when she was really starting to make a difference as a reporter is not enough. It’ll never be enough.

And of course, the “having you” part. The only, ONLY person the writers could have ever justified Kara saying this line to (even though it goes against everything we know about Kara) is Alex. Because Alex is her rock, the only reason she ever started to feel like Earth could also be home. The reason she flew into space and nearly blew out her powers trying to stop that spaceship because she would not lose her sister. And before you say anything, even if she had said this line to Lena, I would have obviously been giddy for a few seconds before wincing because it doesn’t matter who Kara says it to when it’s not true. And to do it in this episode? An episode where it was proven once again that Kara and Alex are the heart of the show only for them to have the audacity to downplay Alex’s importance to Kara and have her say that she’ll be okay so long as she has man hell? How dumb do the writers think their audience is?

But the writers are making a habit of belittling all of Kara’s actions in an episode in order to make it all about man hell again. 2x11, 2x12, and 2x15 are some of their stronger episodes this season. But they’re also the ones where the writers are trying to make man hell seem way more important than he actually is in those last scenes. And the writers are so spectacularly failing at that since there is no way such a badly written character can ever be considered important in those great episodes because he’s just not. And they’re choosing to showcase it in episodes where it would be the most obvious. The only thing the writers are doing is weakening a good episode by turning around and making it about monew again.

I truly don’t understand what has happened this season. I don’t understand how the writers are sending one message throughout an episode only to have Kara act like a completely different person around man hell in every ending scene just so they can cancel out that message. I don’t understand why they’re still bothering to call the show Supergirl when they’ve destroyed her character.

TL;DR Do you think Amazon will give me a partial refund on my season pass if I just return the end scenes of every episode or should I just cancel my season pass because every scene worth watching is on youtube?

Hello Steph, sorry to bother you with this old question: and When Sherlock was dying, Moriarty said, "Mommy and Daddy would cry. Mrs hudson would cry. The woman would cry. And John would cry, buckets and buckets." I can see that he didn't think of Mycroft here because he was supposed to be the iceman, but why mentioned Irene while not mentioning Greg and Molly? I get that the key point here is John but why talked about Irene before John? Any hints? And thank you for always being wonderful!

We discussed this scene awhile ago and surprisingly none of us thought about this. Well, given that this is in Sherlock’s head:

  • I think he believes that Greg only likes him for the work, even though on multiple occasions Greg has shown genuine caring and affection for him. One of the biggest faults for people with low self esteem (that’s me, hello) is that we genuinely believe that we are a bother to everyone and people only like us for our utility. We have a hard time believing that anyone genuinely loves and cares about us, so we fear attaching ourselves to people because they’re just inevitably going to break our hearts in one form or another. This goes for someone like Sherlock, who thinks, for a lot of people, that he’s only good for their need of his talents, ergo, he doesn’t think Greg will miss him all that much. That, and we have to also take into account about Sherlock’s first “death”. Perhaps he didn’t see Greg grieve for Sherlock’s death like he did John, so he thinks he won’t be all that missed. 
  • With Mycroft, I do truly believe that Sherlock’s self esteem is so low that he doesn’t think his brother loves him all that much; I would presume the only other times he’s seen his brother worry over him was when he was drugged out of his mind, and it’s likely Sherlock probably doesn’t remember those or “deleted” them. He loves and idolizes Mycroft, but we even see in his mind palace as he’s dying that Sherlock believes that Mycroft thinks him stupid, so perhaps Sherlock doesn’t think his brother – despite ALL the thing Mycroft does for him and lets him get away with – would care if he was gone… just another thing Mycroft doesn’t have to worry about anymore.
  • I think with Molly, earlier in the episode, she was angry with him for not being the man she fantasized him to be, so I imagine her anger is still fresh in his mind; he’s not the pedestal-god she built him up to be, and  Sherlock knows it's only her infatuation with him that keeps her wanting to help him all the time, so he thinks she doesn’t REALLY like him for anything more than that. I don’t doubt that he does value their friendship, but I don’t really think he thinks of her beyond a valued colleague. She does have a place in his mind palace, after all, as the personification of his knowledge on the human body.
  • For Irene, I think he thought of her because she made some sort of impression to him in helping him discover his sexual interest in John. I like to headcanon that she will be upset because Sherlock didn’t tell John before he died about his feelings, because she genuinely wanted them together. In actuality, I think it’s because he did understand that she appreciated his intelligence and felt some sort of passing platonic affection for him and his naïveté.

But it means nothing that Irene was thought of before John; John was the last thought Sherlock had as he was dying – the VERY last one – before he decided he needed to live, because JOHN was in danger. He came back for John, not anyone else.

As an aside, I’m not going to go into how this entire scene (“That wife! John Watson is definitely in danger!”) is rendered COMPLETELY pointless with the ridiculous 180 of Mary’s character in S4. :/

I am thinking about the possibility that Estela is rourke's and olivia's daughter and it makes a lot of sense. The "i'm sorry olivia" after estela beats him up could be him manipulating her but l honestly dont think so. Rourke was in a daze at that time and i think we saw a rare moment of weakness. And in the most recent chapters we saw Iris saying she didnt know olivia and didn't want to know her. If it's true that Lila had romantic feelings for rourke then it adds up that she killed olivia.

Ahhhhh one of my favorite theories.

There are even more hints pointing in that direction!
Estela doesn’t know her father, for example.
Also the romantic notes we found in one of the first chapters in book 1. I doubt they added it for nothing.
And the old note we found on the New Year’s Eve, where Rourke write the new researcher (which has to be Olivia) , reminds him of someone, as if he knew her from earlier.
Then IRIS reaction to her and the “I’m sorry Olivia” ,like you mentioned, which seemed genuine.
Also in Estelas idol scene he told her he could’ve never brought himself to killing Olivia, which is weird, since he has obviously no problem with killing people.

Also why was Estela the only other person who was in the office in the epilogue of book one, besides Aleister and IRIS?
And why was Aleister in her idol scene ?

Also her name means “Star” , doesn’t it? Could also be a coincidence, but since everything on la Huerta has to do with the star constellations? (Like the “Celestial” , or all the zodiac signs). Also her sign is Draco, the dragon. But don’t imagine a normal dragon, because the signs are named after ancient mythology. And ancient dragons were basically big scary snakes. Estela is the only one who has a snake related constellation, besides… well, you know.

Also… I may remember that wrongly, but… Estela has a lighter skin complexion than her mother does, right? So her father would probably have a light skin tone?

I think too many things point into that direction for it being a mere coincidence. And if this theory isn’t true, I might be a little disappointed , even though we all know it’ll hurt a lot if it’s true.
Estela would probably have an identity crisis.

Do you ever find yourself feeling conflicted with flowery prose? Like on one hand, it can describe something beautifully but on the other hand, you didn't want to read an entire long paragraph devoted to describing how someone's cooking tastes good.

I have Thoughts about this.

I love beautiful descriptions. I love reading them, and hope that sometimes I write them, too. There’s a real misconception out there that all description is bad description, or that it is always better to favor a Hemingway-esque touch. (*stares into the camera like it’s the Office*) Hemingway is Hemingway, you know? What (arguably) worked for him isn’t going to work for everyone, and it shouldn’t. You can pull my poetic Patricia A. McKillip from my cold, dead, beautifully-described hands.

Reading is about taste. Enjoyment is about taste. Not everyone’s is the same.

That said, I’m not a big fan of description-for-description’s sake, either. I don’t need or want to know every single detail about every single thing happening in a scene; that’s what imagination is for. If an author takes the time to describe something (and certainly if I, as an author, take time to describe something) I want it to have some purpose.

Take your example of a long paragraph about the taste of food. If the author is just describing how to food tastes to pad their word count, that’s probably going to be a bit dull. If, however, that long paragraph serves a narrative purpose, well… that’s another story, isn’t it? If the author’s describing the meal in loving detail because it’s actually the last meal the character’s ever going to eat (because it’s poisoned, because there’s about to be a murderous interruption, because the character’s about to die of an unexpected heart attack, because the character’s about to lose their sense of taste, because it’s about to be revealed that the meal is the character’s last meal on death row…), that adds narrative purpose. 

Narrative purpose is compelling. Wanting to know what happens next is why we read, right? A lot of the time? And caring about the people inhabiting those stories (including having a picture in your mind of who they are, where they are, and what’s important to them – all often portrayed through what descriptions are chosen) is a huge part of that.

If I describe the clothes someone is wearing, their appearance, the contents of the room they’re standing in, the way the light hits something, even colors or taste or weather or the feel of the air – it’s pretty consciously done. I want it to evoke a feeling. I want to set up a sense of foreboding. Sometimes I’m using foreshadowing. I want descriptions to tie into the emotional life of the character or the scene I’m writing. I want the reader to temporarily inhabit the world of the character, the life of the character, even the mind of the character. I want you to see, feel, taste what they’re seeing, feeling, tasting in a way that makes sense and feels natural.

That said, if you load any reader with too much detail, they’re going to lose track. They’re going to get lost. They might even give up entirely. Description is a writer’s way of saying, gently, “Hey, look here.” If the writer is like a kid in a candy store, bouncing around and pointing excitedly at everything, there’s a good chance the reader’s going to get stuck somewhere at the lollipops, long before the writer reaches the cinnamon hearts.

And if the cinnamon hearts are, metaphorically, the (pardon me) heart of the scene, the writing has failed and it’s entirely possible the scene’s going to flop or fail to meet its purpose. (All scenes should have purpose. All of them.) 

But!! Like any good magician, sometimes a writer’s going to play little sleight of hand tricks. They’ll be like “Hey, look over here, see these chewy little cola-flavored gummies? Don’t they remind you of your childhood? Aren’t they evocative? Do you remember how you lost your first tooth in a cola-flavored gummy and swallowed it and were afraid the tooth fairy wouldn’t come?” in order to BAM sucker punch you with the cinnamon hearts a few pages later. That’s okay. That’s good. That’s where you really, really want to get sometimes. (As a writer, managing to pull off a trick like that is an incredible high.)

To be truly successful, in my opinion, a writer has to write description with intention. No matter what candy they’re describing. Or not describing. The writer is setting the scene, drawing the reader in, and, ultimately, bringing the whole thing home to narrative fruition.

So yeah. Don’t be afraid of description. Just be afraid of writing descriptions that serve no real purpose. (A small plug for editors and betas here: this is a great question to ask them, by the way. “Where did you get bogged down? Where did you pause for a little too long?” If they note a descriptive passage, ask yourself what the purpose behind that passage is. If you don’t know? Cut it. If it’s unclear? Clarify it.)

One other thing: Writers? Trust your readers. If you’ve given a description once? You don’t actually need to go back to it unless it’s new to your POV character (i.e., they’ve never seen the thing you’re describing before, even though the reader has) or something changes. So, a character has red hair. Say it once, in a way that makes sense and isn’t thrown in without purpose. Then leave it, unless there’s a new POV (who needs to notice the red hair) or that hair gets cut or dyed. Readers are smart. They’ll remember from page to page and chapter to chapter!
