I am so excited!!! This little book (well, 264 pages) has been about 9 months in the making, and it’s finally done. Good grief.

Basically, many of my friends at my undergrad university did Creative Writing with me, and for our final project we had to write a 6k word short story and 2k critical commentary - which, by the way, as someone who has done a Master’s since and written a 20k thesis, was just as hard as writing a standard dissertation. As a surprise to everyone, I sneakily got copies of everyone’s short stories by pretending I just wanted to read them and compare them to mine, and I made them all into an anthology, which I gave to everyone at graduation. It was a really fun project to work on, even though it took ages to proof read the entire thing and design the cover and cry over Word formatting. We called ourselves the Come Along Collective because ‘come along’ was kind of a catchphrase of ours and ‘collective’ sounded professional and artistic. Sue us, we had degrees in this shit.

In June last year, about 3 years after we graduated, we met up (a pretty big deal, seeing as one of us now lives in the US!) and decided to do another anthology. Without the immediate option of including our conveniently timed university dissertation equivalents, we agreed that it would be really fun if we all wrote a short story of between 4-15k words - this is actually why I wrote Here, the World Entire, which appears in this anthology in a slightly shorter form! Since I made that first anthology back in 2013 our friendship group has changed a little, and so one contributor to the first anthology isn’t in this one and we have a new contributor, but that’s OK; it kind of charts the progression of everyone’s experiences since university.

So, over the past 9 months or so, we all wrote a story each, and everyone put their all into their stories, despite being 23-25 now and not having the luxury of time that we used to have, and honestly, the stories are amazing. There’s not a single one in there that I wouldn’t read in a literary magazine. One person didn’t do Creative Writing and was really worried about their story not matching up to the others, but it absolutely does. I did a little cry when I read it because it was so good and the writer didn’t think it was (I think they are now aware that they are actually super talented and should definitely write more). That was one of the reasons I’m so happy to have this physical copy as proof that it’s done, and people who thought they couldn’t do it did do it, and they did it fabulously, because every single person wrote something phenomenal.

There was one person in the group who wasn’t able to write anything because they had a lot going on in their life, and so the rest of us prepared a SUPER SECRET SURPRISE, complete with a secret Facebook group chat (which was literally titled THE ONE THAT YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO KEEP SECRET) in which we collaborated and wrote a story for her instead so that she would still have a story in the anthology. One person wrote a section, then handed it to the next person, and so on. It turned out to be an absolutely hilarious story involving Emily Blunt as an evil sorceress, Jez and Mark from Peep Show as couriers, and our old landlord as an arch villain. It’s pretty rad, not going to lie. That person still gets their name on the cover because the story wouldn’t have been written without them; we basically tried our best to put that person’s personality into a narrative, and that’s why it’s so weird. They are weird, is what I’m saying.

This whole thing was a massive labour of love for all of us. I was literally proof reading it on lunch breaks, and taking graphic design assignments at work so that I could practice for when I made the cover (which I think looks snazzy, if endearingly off-kilter). Everyone was hugely supportive of one another, giving each other prompts and feedback whenever anyone got stuck, and it was such a fantastic experience to make it from start to finish. I’m so, so proud of the end product, and I’m excited to see what our next one will look like!

I have also prepared a super secret special surprise of my own for everyone within this anthology, which I won’t disclose here just in case any of them happen upon this post. It’s rad, though. I’m excited for everyone to see it.

This isn’t available for commercial purchase or anything like that, but it’s a personal project that’s been taking up a lot of my time lately (in a good way!) and it’ll be kind of sad not to have this to work towards. Still, onto the next thing!

What Am I Writing...

Hello!  Hello!  I was tagged by @dimpled-halo @taggiecb and @waytoomanypeopleintheaddisonlee to share what I’m working on right now so here goes…

1.  My Big Bang:  I Walk the Line  Professor Louis!  Grad Student Harry!  All is not as it seems! I’m working really, really hard on this one.  I think it might be something different than what people are used to seeing from me.  I’m really excited to finish it and get it out there.   The original SSS that inspired this fic was Paradise City (take me down).

2.  True Blood AU:  I started this originally thinking I’d do it for my big bang, but changed my mind.  Can’t wait to get back to it.  Louis is an ancient vampire recently moved to Bon Temps, LA and Harry is a server at a local pub/restaurant.  Harry’s also…inexperienced.  Ahem.

3.  Working on a yet to be named pinch hit with @dimpled-halo.  Can’t say much but it’s going to be GOOOOOD.

4.  I have big plans to get back to Devil in Your Smile (it’s chasing me), my original vampire series.  I have the prequel all worked out. 

5.  And, last, but not least, I want to write a part two for Through the Wire , my A/B/O fic, if only to make the darling @nostainofaredwine happy.

This episode for me really highlighted and then in its dramatic finale brought to an extreme the use of perspective that Rebecca Sugar has often talked about during panels. In her rare appearances, we are almost always looking up at Rose Quartz, or she is leaning down and over our POV - be it Pearl kneeling before her hologram in Rose’s Scabbard

or Greg on a number of occasions during the early days of their relationship (We Need To Talk is a really interesting watch with regards to camera angles and how they change - Greg literally climbs a stack of crates during his attempt at communication and, well, seeing eye to eye)

or Garnet after her fateful fall in The Answer

or, hey, Buddy Buddwick collapsed in the desert in Buddy’s Book

She even has magical floating powers. It all fits, of course, with the entire running theme of the (unattainable/unmaintainable) pedestal. And even when she is not directly present, and even when it’s not the focus of the shot, her portrait can be seen overlooking the familiar setting of the beach house.

I don’t normally engage in fandom discourse, but I see a lot of people saying “I don’t want blizzard to say who the canon lgbt characters are in Overwatch, because I think it’s better for fans to have their own headcanons.” And I 100% disagree.

Representation in a game that reaches people all over the world, many of whom are from a homophobic subculture that might otherwise not encounter any queer characters in any of their other media, is more important than your ships. 

Shipping is not why lgbt characters are necessary. They are necessary because real, actual lgbt people exist and now more than ever need to be normalized in media. Subtext alone is not enough. We need to be allowed to exist as more than a head tilt and a wink, as more than something that has to be coded and guessed at like we’re some sort of dirty secret.

basically, If your ship is more important than real life representation on a global scale, I really think you’ve missed the point, and maybe you should think about your priorities. :\

Garnet’s Next Fusion

Garnet has always been the leader when it comes to fusion, for obvious reasons.

But her fusion with Amethyst went awry, her fusion with Pearl was built on lies, and her fusion with Peridot was respectfully denied.

So it’s been a while since she’s had a fusion – a healthy and happy one, no less.

That’s why I think her next fusion will be different. I think the next one to fuse with her will be the one to approach her and say, “Garnet, let’s fuse.”

But who could it be? Who’s that close to Garnet?

Who’s bonded with her over fusion more than anyone?

Who has her utmost respect and trust?

Who would be the one brave enough to ask Garnet, the dominant figure of the Crystal Gems, to fuse with them?

Hmm …

Is this like… not a thing or… 

I want a scenario where Adrien finds out his scarf was actually from Marinette and not his dad, and for it not to go very well at first.

Because while I’m sure Adrien would understand it was a mix up and still, his friend went out of her way to make him a gift, I can’t imagine him really looking at the scarf for a while and being happy about it, not while knowing his dad didn’t actually get him anything at all. Adrien would have very mixed feelings about it IMO, and I wouldn’t really blame him either.

So, angst time. Adrien wants to confront his dad about it but he’s overseeing a fashion show and he couldn’t ask Nathalie because she went with him, so that leaves Marinette. He pulls her aside after school, and there’s so much anger and resentment for his dad building up, and he really doesn’t want to take it all out on Marinette, but Adrien’s afraid that if he opens his mouth he might say something he’ll come to regret, so instead he pulls his scarf out from his bag and smooths out a corner of it, displaying Marinette’s tiny signature for her to see. 

He can see the panic flash in her eyes while she stares at the scarf, but it doesn’t seem like she can find words, so he asks a question, “Why didn’t you you say something?”

Meanwhile, Marinette really IS panicking. True to what she told Alya all those months ago, Marinette tries to explain that she didn’t want him to be disappointed that the scarf wasn’t actually from his dad, just her, but even as she explains this she can see it’s not making Adrien feel better and honestly, it’s no wonder. 

(“I wish you said something earlier,” Adrien finally says, and he’s rubbing his neck and chuckling and trying to keep the situation light. “I feel like a bit of an idiot.)

Because Marinette let the secret go on for too long, and surely finding out a cherished present wasn’t actually from his dad after all this time believing that it was… it must have hurt. It must have hurt ten times worse than if Marinette would have just told him the truth, though surely that would make her look like an opportunist more than anything. She didn’t want to come off as selfishly wanting his attention. Marinette was stuck, honestly. She didn’t know if there was a right way to have gone about that situation. So she says the only thing she can.

“I’m sorry.”

And offers the only thing she can think of.

“I-I can take the scarf back, if you want.”

Now Adrien feels bad, because he really wants to keep it. He wants to look at the scarf and think, ‘my friend made this for me, she took time and care to knit this with me in mind.’ But instead, all he can see is Gabriel Agreste’s stern face, and all he can think when he sees the baby blue fabric is that his own dad didn’t even bother buying one of those lame pens for his birthday this time. 

Tentatively, he hands the scarf back to her.

i feel like for a while isak changed his style to what he thought was more ‘masculine’ because of the flack he got in seasons one and two from people thinking he was gay

and now he’s more comfortable and confident he’s gone back to fluffy hair and fancy scarves instead of sportswear and snapbacks and i just love this so much

So much of the media discussion of Trump’s Muslim ban, both in US and international media, centers around issues of terrorism: offering statistics about the infinitesimal number of refugees who are involved in terrorist activity, and decrying the ban as something that’s likely to increase the numbers of people joining ISIS and other terrorist organizations. And all of that is true, and it’s important to call out Trump’s false claims. But here’s the thing. I think most of the media is missing the actual point of the Muslim ban.

It’s not about terrorism. It never has been. By allowing the narrative to be framed that way, even in our critiques of Trump, we’re conceding a vital point. We’re buying in to the narrative that this is about terrorism, and that we’re simply debating the proper response to it. It paints a picture in which protestors and liberal media outlets are unhappy with Trump’s response to the issue.

But that’s not it at all.

The truth is we’ve seen this before. A ban on people entering the country, based on religion and / or ethnicity, is the first step. Next will come the Muslim registry. There will be a quiet purging of all Muslim employees from government jobs. Persons listed in the Muslim registry will be monitored by police “for the protection of the public.” Discrimination in hiring practices in private companies will become first legal, then actively encouraged. Muslims will be first encouraged, then coerced, and finally forced to move into segregated areas, or perhaps into protected camps or detainment facilities. People will start disappearing.

That’s what this is about. The ban is about taking that first step. Talking about terrorism only serves to lend legitimacy to Trump’s claims that this is the primary issue. But it’s not. The issue here is a white supremacist administration that actively wants to purge undesirables.
