i really should be doing course work

I still don't know if he ever got his coffee.

I’m not 100% sure this even belongs here and I’ve posted this story elsewhere so some of you might have read it already.

Some background: I work in a rather specialized area of Forensics. Officially I’m employed by Police Scotland but they tend to let other law enforcement agencies, universities, etc borrow us from time to time. A lot of the time it’s for consulting work or guest lecturing but sometimes we’re sent to teach training courses.

About 18 months ago I was asked to lecture at a training course for some of the CID higher-ups in an English Police force. It was the first time I’d done anything like it and I was crapping myself.

I met with the conveners and other officials for dinner the night before my first day, and after dinner and drinks, I was dropped back at my hotel.

So to set the scene; it’s about 10pm, I’m all dressed up in my evening wear and I’m sitting at the bar in the hotel lounge. The place is dead, it’s just me and the barman so I’ve taken off my heels and am unraveling my hair having just ordered a hot chocolate. The barman asks if I want mini marshmallows on my hot chocolate. Yes, of course I want mini marshmallows on my hot chocolate. No I don’t mind waiting while you run to the kitchen.

So I’m sit there trying to trick my phone into connecting to the hotels WiFi when Angry Man walks in.

He stomped into the room and slammed his fist down on the bar about 3 ft from me and barked out one word:

“COFFEE”

I didn’t know it but apparently that attempt at communication was aimed at me; a fact I learned a moment later when Angry Man moved right up next to me, bent over me so his face was practically in mine and barked out again;

“COFFEE”.

In an attempt to get away from the screaming coffee man I slipped off the bar stool, putting it between the two of us. Extremely confused and more than a little terrified, it didn’t immediately occur to me that he thought I worked there, hell it wasn’t even registering that he wanted a coffee. He was just repeating it the same way a toddler does when they learn a new word but don’t entirely know what it means.

I’m going to blame the confusion, fear and tiredness for my completely moronic response, which was to parrot the word back at him.

Me: “Coffee?”

Angry Man: “COFFEE”

Then he slammed his fist down on the bar again. This time I noticed that he was actually throwing down money.

My brain suddenly came back online.

Me: “Oh. Eh, the barman should be back in a sec. H-”

Angry Man: “Get me a coffee. Now.”

Ooooh four new words. Progress.

Me: “I’m sorry, mate, I don’t work here.”

Angry man (shouting now) “You fucking lazy liar!! Do you think I’m fucking stupid?”

Yes, actually, but I’ll be keeping that to myself.

Angry Man: “Get off your fucking phone and get me a shitting coffee”

Me: “I really don’t-”

Cue rant about me being the only person in the lounge so of course I must work there and I was just being lazy and did I take him for an idiot. All while I’m slowly backing away from the bar so he can’t pin me between it and the bar stools. Then he throws in this:

Angry Man: “Do you have any idea who I am? Do you have any idea how important I am?”

I never got to find out how important this guy thought he was. Instead Angry Man’s Friend came wandering in.

He took one look at me; pretty much cornered by Angry Man who is now screaming about how he’ll make sure I never work again while I’m trying to calmly tell him to back off and he tries to intervene.

He took Angry Man by the shoulders and moved him back away from me while asking him what was going on.

Angry Man: “This stupid little whore is refusing to serve me”

Me: “I really don’t work here”

Angry Man’s Friend: “She doesn’t work here. Let’s just all try to calm down”

There was a few moments of Angry Man’s Friend trying to calm Angry Man while he ranted about getting me fired until two barman arrived, one of them with my hot chocolate. The presence of the three men distracted Angry Man enough for me to grab my shoes and escape with my chocolatey goodness.

As I left I could hear him demanding to speak to a manager.

The next day, after being introduced to a lecture theater full of high ranking CID Officers, I stood and walked to the podium only to be greeted by one guy in the audience laughing hysterically.

I just sort of froze trying to figure out the joke. Did I have food on my face? Was my shirt on inside out?

A quick check confirmed that, no. I’d managed to adult that morning.

A few other people began to chuckle as this guy struggled to get a hold of himself. As he regained control he pointed to his left.

Where a very red looking Angry Man was sitting.

I think it was the sheer relief that he wasn’t actually laughing at me that caused me to open my mouth and say to Angry Man;

“Oh did you get your coffee in the end?”

He walked out and I didn’t see him for the rest of the course.

“Here’s the thing-” Lily said, marching into the pub and pulling out a stool.

“We’re closed.” James interrupted without looking up from wiping down the bar.

“I want a dog.” Lily barrelled on without hearing him. “But my landlord doesn’t allow pets so I was wondering-“

“I’m not getting a fucking dog for you.” James said firmly.

Lily blinked at him. “I was going to ask if you thought it was morally wrong to raise it in my air-vent.” There was a silence. James was caught between hoping she wasn’t serious and knowing that she was. “Your idea seems better.” Lily admitted.

“Really. Talk me through that, is it because there is no animal abuse involved?”

“I was thinking more along the lines of then you’d have to clean up the poo, but the no animal abuse is also good.”

“Y’know” Sirius was lying on top of the bar, waving around a beer and staring at the ceiling. Nobody looked up. “I always thought once we owned a bar we would spend a solid 60% percent of our time drunk, and that hasn’t happened.”

Remus, still wiping down tables, said “I shudder to think what you’d be like on your own.”

“Since we bought the bar we spend more time drunk than we used to?” Peter consoled, baffled.

Sirius sat up. “I would say we spent about 15% percent of our time drunk before the bar, and after the bar we spend about 25%. That is an increase of only ten percent.”

“Where are you pulling these numbers from?” Lily asked while holding the ladder for James, who was avoiding the dishwasher by pretending to fix the squeaky window.

“On top of being an excellent barman I double as a statistician.”

“You are neither of those things.” Remus said. Sirius glared.

“Fuck you Moony. At school you were always saying I didn’t do enough math, and here I am, doing math, and you’re abusing me.”

Remus threw a dishtowel at him and gestured to the kitchen. “Go unstack the dishwasher.”

“Fantastic.” Sirius said, throwing his hands in the air. “This is what I get for my brief foray into math. Insulted and unloading dishes.” He jumped off the bar and mockingly gave Remus’ back the finger. James laughed.

THINKING ABOUT TAKING A GAP YEAR?

hi folks! as most of you will know, i’m currently taking a gap year. i’ve received so many questions about this (mostly asking me for advice) so i thought i’d just gather all the questions and the information i’ve gathered and make a little guide about it all! :-) i’ll be going through why i’m taking one, the advantages and disadvantages and what i’ve learned so far!

► what is a gap year?

first thing’s first: what is a gap year? according to the cambridge dictionary, the definition is as follows: ‘a year between leaving school and starting university that is usually spent travelling or working.’ most people will take a year out before starting uni, but it’s also often taken to prevent a burn out or stress from overwork in later years. the reasons for taking a year out before starting uni vary, but the most common reason is to have fun and explore the world before getting down to some serious studying. as a result of this, young people will have a chance to get to know themselves, and the world around them, a lot better. in general it’s seen as a positive thing, although the opportunity can be wasted if the year is spent being lazy and not doing anything interesting.

► why did i decide to take a gap year?

i made a post about this back in july (2016), but i’ll briefly explain this again. in my case, there were a few reasons why i decided to take a gap year instead of going straight to uni after graduating. the first being that the course i want to do is super expensive compared to the normal courses in my town, so my parents wanted me to work and save money to pay for it myself! since i really want to do the course, i totally didn’t mind the idea of working for a year and saving up the money. the second is that i was only 17 when i graduated, so i’d be moving to barcelona at a really young age to study there. that was something my parents and i weren’t so sure about (considering my age). a few other factors are that i wanted to finish my musical education before leaving, i wanted to have some fun and travel a little before studying and that i wanted to feel really ready for the move.

► should you take a gap year?

i get asked a lot by my followers if i think they should also take one, and i honestly think it’s way too personal to let anyone else decide! you need to think of the reasons why you would want/ need to take a year out first. i suggest you make a list of reasons why and reasons not to. if one list has better reasons, go with that one! i also suggest you talk to your family, teachers or anyone else you know taking one/ or has taken one. but if you need a little more help, i’ve made a little list of the advantages and disadvantages that you can take a look at below.

► what are the advantages?

there are so many so i’ll try my best to list them all!

  • you don’t have to study: for some people this is a huge advantage. if you’re not too keen on studying, taking a gap year provides a nice long break to enjoy before going to uni to study even harder.
  • you can do the things you couldn’t as a student: think about it: you have a whole year to do whatever you want to! as a student you’re bound to certain activities like going to school, studying, etc. now you’re not in school you can travel or pick up a hobby you didn’t have the time for/ the money for/ or just plain couldn’t before!
  • you can experience the working world before your peers: this is an advantage i regard really highly. i’ve been working for almost 8 months now, and i have discovered so many things about the working world that i wouldn’t have otherwise known. you’ll find out how to find real jobs/ go to interviews/ etc before any of your peers. and with that comes the money.
  • → money: if you choose to work. you’ll be payed good money depending on the job, and with that money you’ll be able to travel or buy things you couldn’t before! you can save it for later life too, which will help you out a lot in the long run.
  • you’ll get to know yourself better: if all your friends decide to go to uni, you’ll probably not be able to spend all that much time with them anymore, leading to you being alone more often. but don’t worry! this can be a really good thing. you’ll get to know yourself better, and by working/ travelling/ picking up a hobby you can really work on yourself. i found that high school really messed up my ideas of myself by trying to fit in. you really get the chance to look after yourself better and to nurture your true nature and personality more.

► what are the disadvantages?

when there are advantages, there will always be some disadvantages!

  • you will feel a little isolated sometimes: if you don’t know anyone else taking a gap year, it’s very likely you’ll feel slightly isolated at times. friends going to school or uni will have a very different schedule than you, so you won’t always be able to hang out with them. this is very easily remedied by keeping yourself busy and active though!
  • you might get out of the habit of studying: because you won’t be in school or taking a course, you might find yourself getting out of the old habit of studying. i noticed how fast my hand got tired when writing for example! this isn’t a huge problem, because you can always keep your habits alive by following online courses or learning a new language for fun!
  • you might become less motivated: this sort of ties in with the previous point, but it’s possible you’ll notice yourself get lazier and lose motivation. the habit of routinely studying and doing your assignments won’t really be necessary during a gap year, so it might be hard for you to get back into the swing of things later on.

That’s it! Hopefully this was helpful to some of you!  :-)

What to do when you’re stuck with a lazy group? I’m with two guys and we still haven’t chosen a topic. We have to present in two weeks. Nobody replies to my messages and both left after class this week. I just wanted to choose a topic and leave!!!! So I booked a study room today and they all made excuses. Ugh. I’m gonna be the one who’s doing all the work. This is worth 40% of our grade. Same as the exam. FML

Hi there, thank you for asking, as this is a super common problem in high school, university and the workplace! I’ve never seen this question answered in depth on studyblr, so I’ll give it a go!

NB. It depends on your personality as to the approach you want to take, so let everyone who’s reading this not pass judgement upon others in such a situation~ Remember in all of this to be polite, understanding and gracious no matter how much you want to flip tables. The following 5 Options go in order of how many bridges you want to burn :’)

Option 0. Wait for a bit longer and try communicating with them again.

I have seen a similar question asked once on tumblr where the studyblr blogger answered “two weeks is plenty of time, you’re probably over-reacting”… Obviously, I’m not going to trivialise your answer by giving you just one option like that - I frankly thought that studyblr was quite rude for answering so shortly to someone who took the time to ask them a question.

How to do it: The way you communicate with them now might not be effective, so make sure that you’re ticking off the following boxes if you choose this option, rather than just letting nothing change: meeting face to face, setting mini-deadlines for each part instead of just allocating once at the beginning, and make sure each member knows what and when they have to complete something.

This option is best suited for people who:

  • really don’t want to create a commotion and would rather wait a little longer and reduce the time available for them to do the project,
  • or people who would answer ‘Strongly Disagree’ to “Being organized is more important to you than being adaptable“ and “In a discussion, truth should be more important than people’s sensitivities.” in a personality quiz (a strong prognostic factor for Option 1 tbh),
  • or people who know they can tackle everything in less than 1 week,
  • or people who just realised/kind of know they’re actually overreacting,
  • or have just realised whilst reading this that maybe they didn’t actually try contacting the other group members all that well (i.e. don’t have enough evidence for Option 3).

Pros:

  • Nobody gets angry at anyone, and it doesn’t reflect badly on you either (because no one finds out if you don’t say anything - people tend to be judgemental if you pick one of the three options below).
  • Less stressful for some people than confrontation.
  • You might get eventual cooperation.

Cons:

  • You might not get eventual cooperation, and end up being stuck with all the work anyway (hence resulting in options below).
  • More stressful for other people as you feel time is ticking away and nothing is changing.
  • The time you spend waiting for the others will result in less time for you to tackle all the actual work.

Pro-tip: doing as much individual work as possible sometimes will egg those team members to finally start pulling their weight, or can help you with Option 3 if you do end up going for it.

Option 1. You make all the decisions and do all the work.

Best suited for people who: are academically gifted, like doing work independently, have excellent time management skills.

Pros:

  • You can ensure the quality of the work will be excellent.
  • You get to choose what topic to do and direct the overall project turnout.
  • No one hates you for anything, but NB. your friends and family relationships that suffer as a result of the time you have to sacrifice might not have anything pleasant to say about it all.

Cons:

  • You need an extraordinary amount of time.
  • The other people in the group get a free ride and in nastier words, some would say you get taken advantage of for your goodwill.
  • Lack of group opinion may make the quality of your work suffer.
  • Other subjects you’re taking may suffer.

Option 2. Badger the other group members until they do some work.

Best suited for people who: don’t want to be stuck with Option 1, but don’t want to escalate to Option 3. Give them an ultimatum about the work, or just decide the topic by yourself if they don’t step up.

Pros:

  • Very similar to Option 0 in that you wait a bit longer before taking drastic action, so you might get eventual cooperation, and you don’t bother your professor.

Cons:

  • You stress yourself out badgering other people.
  • Other group members get annoyed at you, and your classmates that happen to watch you badgering have a not-so-great impression of you.

Option 3. Document a significant amount of evidence that shows your effort to get them to contribute and contact the professor about it.

Best suited for people who: would like to do things independently but just cannot afford the time because of other commitments.

Pros:

  • Professor can step in and (hopefully) offer some sort of alternative solution.
  • Your other subjects won’t suffer.
  • Sometimes you have a really great professor and they end up taking into account that you’ve done the project by yourself and mark super nicely/give a bonus mark, or even penalise the other students.

Cons:

  • Professor may snuff you and say “the purpose of this project is also to learn about team cooperation”. Had a prof before who told us straight up at the beginning of the project that “you work it out, not me”
  • Professor may help you out, but in a way that doesn’t really end up helping e.g. he just emails the two members of your group to tell them to start working once and that’s it.
  • Other group members hate you for life (and I know this bothers some people enough not to go through with it, again pls remember no judgement fellow readers)

How to do it: Email should be along the lines of the following:

Dear Professor _______,

I am a current student undertaking [course code]. I am sorry to contact you in unfortunate circumstances, but I have been having severe difficulty convening with the other members for the remainder of the _____ project. While I am aware that group projects have a dual purpose to both educate us on the academic topic as well as to improve our cooperation and communication skills, I have tried [insert whatever means you attempted to contact them by, attaching evidence is up to you]. I have already completed the intro/background research/other individual task, however I cannot complete the ______ by myself/without group input.

I would appreciate any guidance you could offer/I would greatly appreciate your help/If it is possible, could you please [insert action depending on how desperate you are - don’t ask for anything unreasonable!]?

I apologise for having to inconvenience you, and thank you for your understanding on the matter.

Kind regards,

[Name and student number]

Option 4. You do all the work and then leave their names off the work.

Best suited for people who: work independently, don’t mind burning a few bridges. I won’t actually recommend this option, but I’ve seen this happen in real life.

Pros:

  • Sense of self-satisfaction for some people when the lazy members don’t get a free ride.
  • Again, you make sure the project quality is exactly what you want.

Cons:

  • Similar to Option 1 minus the free ride bit.
  • Not only do the other group members hate you, but their friends in your cohort will too. At least in Option 3, those guys can’t try and gossip behind your backs because whoever they tell will realise that they didn’t do the right thing either.
  • Do this at your own risk, as it can backfire depending on the professor - if anyone’s watched Cheese in the Trap - the main character does all the work but the professor managed to suss out that the other group members didn’t do anything, and as a result penalised her with a D grade for failing to make it “group” work despite the fact she would’ve gotten an A. Some profs are really… they just don’t see it your way :/

Hopefully things don’t have to escalate to Option 4, but whatever you choose to take, I’ll wish you the best! I’ve given quite detailed instructions and written comprehensively, but feel free to contact me any time if you need any more help :)

AU where Harry and Draco are in college together. Harry’s the kid who’s working 2 jobs and barely has the money or time for college. He sort of dresses like a hobo and never goes anywhere without his leather jacket. Draco on the other hand, well… Lets just say there’s a building dedicated to the Malfoy building. Draco dresses in nice sweaters and button downs and wonderful oxfords.

These two have a love hate relationship of course.

(Should I do more of this AU? I really like this idea. Also I don’t like when people paint Harry as some sort of sweet kind man. Which he is! But also he gave no fucks for rules and had an attitude. I want more of that Harry okay?)

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

You take a sip of your coffee as you look at the computer in front of you; you are never going to understand why you accepted a job at the Stark Industries, sure they pay you really well but looking at budgets all day was starting to make you crazy.

To be honest, the budget in front of you is the least of your concerns, it’s been five days since Bucky went on a mission and you still haven’t heard from him. Usually, he texts you to let you know that he was alive and well. But so far nothing, according to Natasha they are fine but the mission is a lot more complicated than they anticipated.

You wish they would be home soon, you hated worrying much, you couldn’t sleep when you were worried.

You almost have a heart attack when you hear your phone ringing, you look at the id caller expecting it to be Dan but no it is Wanda. This is odd she never calls you “Hey Wan is everything fine?” Your mind goes to the worst scenario possible, afraid that something might have happened to Bucky.

anonymous asked:

Why do you hate the idea of "internalized anything? "

It’s a silly way of understanding marganilization in my opinion. Interactions take place within matrices of marginalization and material relations- the identities of the people engaging in the interactions are important but not terribly so, and certainly they are not so separable that they need their own term. So for instance, let’s say a black woman passes me by for a job and gives it to a white woman who’s less qualified, just because of things she assumed because she is black. The interaction between us takes place under the matrix of racism (I am denied access to material resources specifically due to my race) and that wouldn’t change if the woman denying me the job was Latina, or white- either way, my NOT being white and that being the determining factor here makes the interaction racist. Calling this an instance of “internalized racism” not only shifts the focus to that woman’s particular feelings (which honestly, they matter but in the whole scheme of the interaction, I don’t care) but also makes it seem as though this racism exists inside her, and is a personal problem, and not the result of being born and baptized in a racist system which has tainted her worldview. So had a white woman done the same thing, she would also be doing it because she had “internalized” the logics of racism- we all “internalize” these logics and have to work toward seeing them as ideology rather than truth. Racism isn’t internal, it’s external, and racist interactions occur within it- not just between individuals. Of course we should have special sympathy for people of color who seem especially impacted by racist thought in a way that makes them hate themselves. But for one thing, they aren’t internalizing anything that other people don’t (it just hurts other people less because it isn’t about them) and for another, we need to focus on the system at work.

I get the idea, I really do. And I sympathize with it. I do think women enacting misogyny in our interactions with each other comes from a different emotional place than when men do the same thing, and I think this deserves recognition. But at the end of the day, one woman not “internalizing” misogyny doesn’t make patriarchy go away. So I’m not terribly interested in the idea that marginalized people’s interactions with systems are different in this particular sense- they’re not really, but we stand to be hurt a whole lot more by them than people who aren’t the targets of those systems. I think a lot of my reaction is just visceral, a reaction to this idea that the problem lies within a particular person rather than in broad material structures. It feels nice, but doesn’t hold much political weight.

hi!! i know you said you were answering witchy asks so heres what ive got. im a really new witch, ive been interested in it for a few months now and have veeery slowly started trying to figure out what types of magic i can do / enjoy. i know research is the way to become more aware of magic and how to do it, but im never sure what good sources are or what are good articles to read for baby witches. if you have any, id be really thankful! thanks for considering even if you say no <3

Okay, so, instead of recommending you articles and stuff, I’m gonna talk a bit about critical thinking in magic, and using our discernment, because I don’t think it gets talked about a lot.

So the thing is, first off, there are a lot of sources out there, as we know. Some are awesome, some are hit and miss, and some are just…bad. But how can we tell them apart, and how can I know as a beginner what to avoid?

Well, the first thing you want to do is find your source of information. Pick an article. Read it all the way through. Now, how do you feel about what you read? Did it make sense, or were you left confused on a lot of points? Did it *seem* reasonable? Was there anything that didn’t sit right, or made you feel uncomfortable or unsure of yourself?

As magic users, we are taught our instincts are very important, and generally good to follow in regards to magic; I’d say the same can be said for researching magic as well. Of course, it’s not to be totally relied on every time, but it can definitely give you an idea of things you may want to stay away from if it doesn’t sit right with you. Not only is the information accuracy important, but whether you are comfortable utilizing it too! our boundaries in magic are just as important.

Paying attention to any sort of comments or reviews on sources is great too. There are some problematic sources out there, and we do talk about that sort of thing on Tumblr. There can still be useful things found in bad resources, however; you just need to know the problem areas to avoid so you can sift through it to find anything that may be useful to you.

Problem areas:

  • using the terms witchcraft / Wicca / pagan interchangeably
  • religious exclusion (saying one religion is better than another)
  • elitism (“real witches only do *this*” ; “you are only a real witch if you are *this*” ; etc.)
  • cultural appropriation
    • chakras
    • smudging
    • spirit animals
    • animal totems
    • Voodoo / voudou
  • racism
  • anti-LGBT
  • use of slurs
    • g*psy is a big one
  • claiming Wicca as an ancient religion / oldest religion
  • outdated information (can be a problem to some)

This is just what I can think of right now, and is by no means a complete list. If you find something that you wonder if that’s really okay, or gives you a bad gut feeling, stay away from it, or try to look into it a bit more and see what you can find.

[List of Closed Cultures]

Some find that a lack of sources can be a problem, and that is definitely the case with published authors. Online, however, you are more than likely going to find personal experiences, and we can’t really source our own experiences and methods besides to ourselves. Not everyone references the posts they used for herb correspondences, or what method they used for their sigils. Generally you will want to know sources for more about the information of the practice (its history and usage over time, magic users in the past, etc.), because that area is really fuzzy and there’s lots of misinformation on that.

In regards to telling information accuracy - this can be a bit harder nowadays, since we know that magic is unique to each that practices it, and so you may even sometimes see conflicting information on the same topics! Definitely very confusing from the start. I think it is important to keep in mind different views and methods are possible as you research. However, I still recommend that you cross reference.

If you are reading through something, and you wish to check its accuracy, Google it. For example, if someone mentions the properties of rue, and you want to see if that’s really how it’s used commonly, search it up. (This isn’t just applicable to Google, but any other reference materials you may have, Google is just the easiest for accessibility.) Check a few other resources, see what they have to say on the topic. Do they line up for the most part? Where are the differences? Do you have any personal feelings on the topic yet?

Sometimes just experience is enough to tell whether something is legit or bogus. Say you find a spell, and it looks kinda meh, but you don’t really know for sure if it’s any good for you - give it a test run. Learning and discovering for yourself can be just as important and have as big an impact on your craft as anything else. This may have a higher level of risk to it than other methods of research, but sometimes we gotta…

I think that’s really what witchcraft is all about - because all the research in the world isn’t really helpful if you don’t do anything about it. Your experiences may vary based on what you read, and that’s fine, but you’ll never know how it may really work for you unless you try it out for yourself. And I mean, of course you should be doing it in a safe way, but hopefully you know the importance of performing your actions safely in magic and the benefits of protective methods.

Honestly, discernment is something that is experienced and learned that way - trial and error do really help a lot for each of us to find out if this particular thing is any good for us - and just because it may be legit for one person, doesn’t mean it is for you. That is why it’s great to do the research, but you also need to back it up with the physical actions of trying it out too.

Now, this is by not means extensive or complete, it’s just what I can think of at this time.

I’m gonna give you some resources as well, just to be sure.

All of the posts I would recommend would be from Tumblr, since that is where my main arch of experience comes from. However, you can definitely Google your own articles and take a look-see through them, see what sounds feasible to you, if anything makes you feel weird, and cross reference it to a couple other references.

If you can do books, here are some that other have recommended.

I hope this helps you! If I can think of anything else to add in the future, I may do that, but off the top of my head, this is what I’ve got. I have a huge post on how to do witchy research in my drafts, but it is still gonna stay there for a bit, particularly because I have no time and energy for it right now, lol. But I hope this gives you some ideas! :D

One of the most important things I have learned since I started working is that it’s okay to not know things. This was really surprising for me because in uni I always felt like I should already know everything - if a professor mentioned something they were not teaching in that course I mostly didn’t ask since I thought it was a prerequisite.

At work, no one cares. Or rather, everyone knows that you can’t know everything because there are SO MANY tools and frameworks and methods of doing stuff that you can’t possibly know them all. Especially if you’re fresh out of uni/college! Man, programming at uni and actually building software in the industry are so vastly different, it’s like learning to program all over again. And your colleagues know that you didn’t use Tomcat or Docker or Hibernate or Java EE because why would you? It’s okay!

This is why I don’t hesitate to ask anything, even things that seem to be self-evident to everyone else. Because I’ve never gotten a bad reaction from anyone finding out I didn’t know something. No condescension, no irritation, no confusion. Just explanations in a reasonable tone of voice in a way I could understand. So don’t be afraid, it might take some getting used to but this way you’ll learn so much and will be a lot more relaxed.
(That’s not to say I don’t have any problems at work or that there is no awkwardness. The social and organisational stuff is not as easy, but I never feel bad asking about technical stuff.)

prompt: set in the evening of june 13th's clip, the balloon boys are filming a hei briskeby video and yousef takes his phone out mid-video to check his notifications since he didn't have the time to during work and he had it on silent as well, and sees sana's text and forgets how to breathe and doesn't know how to react but is trying to act chill anyways because they're filming but is too shocked to answer back etc etc

Heey!

I wrote this pretty quick and I don’t know if it’s what you wanted but I really hope you like it :D ♥

“You know what we should do?” Mikael said as Elias let the boys into his house

“What? asked Elias

“A live video!!” Mikael answered excited “I’ve seen lots of youtubers doing that, I bet people would watch that!”

“But do we have to do that today?” Yousef asked not really excited about it “Today is being a hard day at work, I haven’t had a break”

“Come Yousef, stop complaining! Mikael’s idea is great” Adam said

“Of course you’re on his side…” Yousef muted.

“Huh?” Adam asked

“Nothing”

“Okay what do you guys think?” Mikael asked Mutta and Elias

“I think it’d be cool” Mutta said “People could ask us questions”

“I’m sorry Yousef but I’m with them, I think it’d be cool. It’d be like the last Hei Briskeby video before you go, it has to be special” Elias said

“Okaaaay, fine. Let’s do it” Yousef said walking to the living room “By the way Elias can you lend me a charger? My phone is dead”

 —x–

Sana checked her phone once again, he still hadn’t seen it. She sighed and as she laid on Noora’s bed.

After deciding that they were ditching school, which they were already doing without even noticing, they went to the Kollektiv and they had been there during the whole afternoon. Noora had told Sana everything that had been going on with William while Sana told Noora about her conversation with Yousef, even the throwing grass leaves part.

“Still no answer?” Noora, who was lying by her side asked

“Nope” Sana said “At least he hasn’t seen it yet, that’s good right? That means he’s not just ignoring me…I guess”

“Sana he would never ignore you, believe me the boy is so gone for you”

“He wasn’t really warm towards me on Sunday…he was nice but…you know, not like other times”

“He thinks you don’t like him, the boy is probably just trying not to get his hopes up”

“Ugh, why is everything so complicated?” Sana sighed covering her face with her hands

“Love is complicated but it’s worth the pain” Noora said with a soft voice

“Seriously Noora, you’re starting to get on my nerves with all this positivity” Sana said making her friend laugh

“Ah, Sana life is beautiful”

Sana shook her head but laughed. That’s when her phone beeped. Her heart started to pound fast on her chest as she grabbed her phone with trembling hands, only to be disappointed when she realized that the notification didn’t belonged to facebook but to youtube.

“Is it him?” Noora asked

“Uh…yes and no”

Huh?”

“It’s a notification from Youtube, apparently Elias and the boys are making a live video right now”

“And what are you waiting for?” Noora said sitting on the bed “Go watch it! Yousef will be there”

“So what? It won’t make him answer”

“I know, but aren’t you curious? I mean you’re subscribed to their channel for a reason”

“Okay, you have a point” Sana said rolling her eyes

She opened the youtube app and pressed play.

The boys were at her house, as always. Elias was in the middle with Adam and Mikael on one side and Mutta and Yousef in the other one.

“Okay, okay, okay we’ve waited a few minutes so everyone gets settled but I think it’s time to start” Elias said looking at the camera “Hei Briskeby! We’re here today with a live video, we want you to ask us questions and we’ll answer them”

Sana rolled her eyes, did they think they were famous or something?

“Sana, look at Yousef” Noora said pointing at him in the corner of the image

“What?”

“He has his phone in his hands and it’s plugged, maybe he didn’t have battery?”

“Uh…could be” Sana said checking her phone once again “he still hasn’t seen it though”

 –x–

Elias was answering some question he had received from a viewer when he finally turned on his phone. Yousef had been without his phone the whole day, and only now he was able to check it, not like he would usually receive many texts anyway. He waited a few seconds for it to be completely loaded to unlock it. Meanwhile he tried to act as if he was interested in the video but being honest, he really wasn’t, he didn’t feel like filming that video. Lost in his thoughts, he felt his phone buzz in his hands. He looked down and saw a notification from facebook.

Sana Bakkoush has sent you a friend request

He widened his eyes and before he could tap on the request a message bubble appeared.

Do you want to hang out with me?”

His heart skipped a beat after reading that simple question, because it wasn’t simple, not at all, not when it came from not other than Sana, the girl he was so gone for. His hands were shaking and before he could do anything about it his phone fell to the floor startling everyone in the room

“Yousef bro, what are you doing?” Elias asked him

 –x–

“Oh my god have you seen that?!!?” Noora asked excited “Check your phone, see if he has read your text, come on!!”

Sana opened the facebook app once more and clicked in her conversation with Yousef

“He has, Noora, he has, he has!! What does that mean?”

“It means that the boy completely freaked out when he saw your text and dropped his phone. Oh my god that boy is so in love!!”

“Maybe he just didn’t expect it” Sana said

“Are you kidding? Look at him! He’s blushing”

“Because Elias is yelling at him”

And he was, as Sana and Noora talked the video kept playing

“Yousef bro, what are you doing?”

“I’m sorry, I just dropped my phone” Yousef said blushing

“Well, leave your phone now, we’re making a video” Elias said

“But I need to…”

“You can answer later, just leave it”

Elias stood up and took the phone away from Yousef.

“Are you being serious Elias?”

“Yes, our public is waiting for us”

All Yousef could do was roll his eyes. The girl of his dreams had finally texted him and her brother had taken away his phone from him as if he was 12 years old. A thought suddenly hit Yousef. He had opened the message, he had seen it. Now Sana would think that he was ignoring her

 –x–

“Look at him! He’s panicking!” Noora said laughing “Oh poor boy”

“He’s not…”

“Sana Bakkoush can you stop pretending like you’re not over the moon right now because you’re seeing the boy you like completely freaking out because you asked him out?” Noora said

“Okay, fine, it’s kind of funny” Sana said biting her lip

“He’s probably so worried because he left you on seen”

Sana looked at the screen and laughed, he definitely looked worried

“Ah, poor boy we have to find a way to contact him” Noora said thinking “I got it!!”

 –x–

“Okay next question” Mikael said as he read the chat they had added to the live video so people could ask their questions “It’s from SB and it says: ‘Yousef are you going to answer me or what?’ dude what the hell?”

Mikael looked at his friend confused, actually all of the boys turned to him confused. But the most confused of all of them? That was definitely Yousef.

“What does that mean?” Elias asked

“Another message!” Adam said taking the phone from Mikael “It’s also from SB and it says ‘it’s not cool to leave a girl on seen, Acar’ Yousef who is that girl?”

“I can’t believe this” Yousef chuckled, then he looked at the camera and added “Elias took my phone, I can’t answer you”

“Who are you talking to?” Mutta asked

“Another message from SB: ‘Then answer me now, look at the camera and answer’” Mikael read.

“Okay, you asked for it” Yousef said laughing and getting a little closer to the camera “Yes, Sana Bakkoush, I’d love to hang out with you”

“Wait, Sana Bakkoush? As in my sister Sana Bakkoush?” Elias asked “What is going on?”

“Well, it seems like our video is over now” Yousef said still looking at the camera “We’ll see you in the next Hei Briskeby video, goodbye!!”

He then stood up and stopped the filming. He had an explanation to give to his friend and a girl to set a date with.

————–x—————

Ahh I’m sorry if this is bad and short. Also I hope it’s not confusing with the texts and everything

And also I’m sorry I didn’t put a screenshot of the fb messages but my phone is dead now and I use the app there so…basically I’m sorry if this is a mess haha

I hope you’ve liked it though

Thanks for the prompt and thank you all for reading!!♥

Friends Part 3

Paring: Bucky x Reader

Part 1 Part 2

You have been waiting in the parking lot in the car for the past 15 minutes, in 5 minutes Dan will arrive for your date and you don’t know if you’re ready for it. Sure, Dan was a great guy, he was nice and funny and polite. But there is a part of you that is hearing Bucky’s words in your brain over and over again and as much as you try you can’t silence it.

You hate how insecure you feel right now, what if Bucky was right and Dan was using you for some ulterior motive? Or if Dan was drunk and regretted asking  you for this date? You try to calm yourself down, thinking about all the possibilities in the worst case scenario “You went to another failed date and you had an overpriced cup of coffee” you think.

You get out of the car when you see Daniel coming down the street “You look beautiful.” He says you can’t help but blush, you are wearing some jeans, with a white shirt and flats. Nothing that deserves such a compliment “You look nice too, black really make your eyes pop.”  He smiles shyly at you, having almost the same reaction as you with the complement.

EXCERPTS ABOUT TAYLOR

AC: [talking about recognizing a special character] If you come into contact with a true superstar and there is a charisma that comes off of them effortlessly, the kind of person when they walk into the room and your back is to the door - you know they’re in the room…
SB: Yeah, I always say that colors in the room change, like if Steven Tyler walked in right now you’d be going […starts turning around…], Steven is here, okay, I got it… because it’s just that thing. And I’m sure any of you can remember a moment, whether you got to meet Mick Jagger or Taylor, and you just went: “WOW! There’s a lot more juice in this person than everybody else”.

AC: So you were gonna build “Big Machine” the way you thought a record label needed to be built, from ground up. And you had no office, no money, no staff, you had nothing except your eye on this 14-year-old girl. You were scouting this 14-year-old talent?
SB: Yeah, so the irony is I get a package, this is an October 2004 and my deal with Universal goes through September 2005, so I get Taylor’s package in October and I meet her November 2nd 2004, I was blown away… and I go to see her two nights later at the Bluebird Cafe, go to meet the family and I’m just completely knocked out by her being, how smart she was at 15-years-old, how incredible the songs were. And then I go back for a second meeting and say: “If you wanna be signed at Universal I will introduce you to the executives and try to help you get signed, but you need to know something - I’m leaving in a year, I’m gonna start my own label, don’t know what it’s called but I can make you one promise tonight - when I start it, you have a deal with me”. And they looked at me and  just kinda went […motions a blank stare…]. They go: “Wow, we finally found someone who gets her and he’s crazy”. So couple weeks later, Taylor had just turned 15, and she called me herself and said: “Hey, just wanna let you know I’ve made up my mind and I’m waiting for you”. And it wasn’t from a manager, wasn’t from a parent, and I said: “Well, you’ve made my day”.
AC: Why do you think she made that decision?
SB: I think because she have had a deal at RCA priors, she had a development deal and they did not believe in her songs and they were trying to get her to work with other songwriters, different producers and they didn’t feel that they understood her and I was immediately fascinated with her songs. And I didn’t realize it back then but, when she came into the office, she literally came into Universal and she played me a song, a second song, and for those of you who know Taylor’s music, the second song was “Picture To Burn” and I said that’s a hit song. And I think from that moment she thinks: “Okay, I think this guy gets me and understands my songs”. I’ve never once brought up to her idea of doing an outside song. So she know that I believe… at her being she’s a songwriter, yes - incredible at everything else, but in her being, the most important thing and 50 years from now when you look back at this moment they’ll go - oh, the Michelangelo of the moment was Taylor Swift.

A/N: you’re so sweet omg and of course it’s a good description! I hope I made it similar to the way you wanted it to be

Kneeling on the cold bathroom floor, your bare legs had goosebumps spread all over your skin, acknowledging the icy tiles. Hair hold back by one of your hands while the other one stabilized your weak body, your forehead collapsed against the toilet stool. Hasty breaths left your slightly open mouth while cold sweat pearled down your face and back.

What is happening to me?

You took a deep breath before sitting up straight enough to not feel like an old grandmother having back problems. Grabbing some pieces of toilet paper, you wiped over your mouth before throwing it into the toilet and flushing it down to God knows where.

Closing the toilet seat, you slowly stood up, turning your body towards the sink, opening the faucet. For a few seconds you let the water run so it could turn completely cold before holding both of your hands underneath it, splashing the icy water into your face. Reflexively, your lungs screamed for air as the cold water hit your face but you just ignored it.

It’s just cold water, calm down.

Grabbing your toothbrush, you brushed your teeth quickly, examining yourself in the mirror in front of you above the sink. Your eyes were encircled by dark bags, skin white as the snow that had already melted away weeks ago. Your hair had lost its healthy shine and just hung there loosely, like overcooked spaghetti noodles.

Sighing deeply, you finished up your cleaning up and walked back into your bedroom, grabbing for your phone. You had to check the calendar before making any overly fast assumptions about your symptoms.

Opening the calendar app, you scrolled back to the last month.

Date of last period: February 16th

Current date: April 17th

Two months since your last period. Two months since mother nature forgot to visit you and make your life horrible. Oh how you wished, Satan had nested in your uterus in those last two months instead of sitting there in that exact moment, wondering how the hell you got into this situation.

“Two fucking months….”, you mumbled to yourself. “I need to get a test.”

With those words being said, you grabbed your keys and coat, storming out of your tiny apartment, down the street to the pharmacy. Strangers pushed their bodies into yours while trying to pass you but you didn’t notice. All you could think of was if you were ready to get some answers. You needed to know why you were feeling so miserable since weeks but at the same time you were scared. Scared that your assumptions would be true and you’d have to tell Yoongi. Scared that he’d flip and leave you alone. So many things could happen and you weren’t ready to figure out what else could ruin your life. But you had to.

Pushing the door open, the smell of disinfectant hit your nose, making you scrunch it in disgust. You never liked the smell of disinfectant. It reminded you of hospitals and that again reminded you of death. Not the nicest connection one could think of. That’s why you tried to stay away from that smell.

Walking up to the pharmacist who looked like she was about to fall asleep any second, you silently prayed that she wouldn’t ask any further questions like aren’t you a little too young to ask for a pregnancy test? where’s the father? do you know who the father is? you should have been more careful, young lady. You really didn’t need that crap right now.

“Excuse me”, you politely asked the woman. “C-can I have one of those pregnancy tests?”, you signaled at the white sticks behind the lady as she turned around to see where you were pointing at. They were the cheapest ones you could see and the only ones you could afford as a college student.

The pharmacist smiled at you and leaned a little closer to you. “Of course, but I wouldn’t recommend those - they’re usually wrong or don’t work at all.”

Then why are you selling them at all? “Oh.. well I guess it’ll have to do, those are the only ones I can afford right now”, you faked a laugh as she handed you the test and you gave her the money. Her expression was pitiful but not judging. More like a mother feeling sad for a child.

“Is there a bathroom around here? I don’t think I can wait until I’m back home”, you mumbled and the lady showed you the way to go.

After finishing your business, you waited in the cabin for the 10 minutes you were supposed to wait, anxiously biting down on your lip.

What if it’s positive? What am I supposed to do? I can’t take care of a baby yet. I can barely take care of myself!

As the 10 minutes went by, you decided that you couldn’t do it. You couldn’t look down at the result by yourself. You needed someone to do it for you. So you walked out of the bathroom back to the pharmacist, who was looking at you questioningly.

“Would you mind- would you mind, telling me what is says?”, you asked hesitantly. “I can’t bring it over myself to do it.”

She smiled at you and nodded. “Sure, turn it around sweetheart, so I can see the bars.”

You turned the stick to her and bit down on your lip hard. Your heart rate increased and nervous sweat started to spread out all over your body.

The lady took a look and then she seemed to struggle with a fitting facial expression. “I don’t know if you’re going to be happy about this new or not, but it’s positive”, she decided to smile at you warmly as your stomach dropped.

“Positive?”, you whispered, looking down on it yourself. There it was. A pink cross. Or plus. Or whatever you want to call it.

“I- it can’t-”, you stuttered as your eyes filled with tears. You didn’t even care to wipe them away at that point.

“Oh no dear, don’t cry”, the pharmacist said. She turned around and grabbed another package, a fancier looking one and discreetly slid it over the table. “Shh don’t tell anyone but here - take this one. These are about 89% of the time right unlike the one you just took. Take it with you and do the test when you’re calmed down, okay?”

You looked up at her and shook your head under tears. “B-but I can’t afford that one.”

The lady smiled at you again and pushed it closer to you. “It’s fine. It’s on the house”, she winked and giggled, making you smile at her thankfully.

“No go, rest and take the test”, you nodded at her words, mouthed a quick ‘thank you’ before rushing back to your apartment.

Maybe you still had a chance.

“What do you mean ‘you’re pregnant’? We always used protection (Y/N)!”, Yoongi screamed in disbelief, brushing his hands through his hair in frustration. “You can’t be pregnant. It’s impossible.”

You rolled your eyes at him and laughed bitterly. “As long as your not sterile and I’m not infertile, I can always get pregnant Yoongi. Condoms can rip and the pill doesn’t work 100%.”

“Fuck!”, he yelled, throwing his phone against the sofa, making you flinch. You had expected him to react pissed or at least not really happy but you never thought, he’d flip like he did.

“Yoongi…”, you approached him, trying to calm him down, needing him to calm down to be calm yourself and not have a complete breakdown.

“Don’t touch me (Y/N)”, he growled.

“But-”

“No ‘buts’! This ruins everything, you realize that right? Everything I worked for so hard these last couple of years. Everything I ever wanted, all ruined because of this fucking mistake”, his voice was as cold as ice as his eyes stared at you, burning not only your body to pieces but your soul as well.

“Yoongi, yes it’s very inconvenient, you can call it a mistake even. But we’re in this together, we can’t change it. But we can go through this together”, you whispered through tears, trying to approach him again. You needed his support more than ever but all he seemed to do was to push you further away.

“It’s not only this pregnancy that is a mistake. This whole relationship was a mistake. I should have never started dating you, then it would have never gotten this far. I would have stayed focused on my work and only my work, not even having the slightest possibility for this to happen. Now what? The fans don’t even know about you! But all of sudden I have a girlfriend and a baby? They’d force me to marry you because we live in fucking Korea and you don’t just get kids without being married yet. My whole life would be ruined!”, by now he was screaming, fuming, running around the house uncontrollably, grabbing things here and there.

His words hit you worse than any weapon could as the meaning behind it sunk in. He thought you were the mistake. You were ruining everything. Everything that was important to him. He hated you in that moment, you felt it.

You sunk to the floor, sobs escaping your lips as tears streamed down your face and your lungs were searching for air. Hysterical sobs left your mouth as your hands covered your face and your body curled up into a tiny frame.

“Yoongi please!”, you screamed out, lifting your head for a second, only hearing him going through your wardrobe in your bedroom. “I can’t do this without you! I’m a broke college student, I’m alone here, I don’t have anybody else but you!”

His figure appeared back in the door frame to the living room, a packed bag slung over his shoulder. “You should have thought about that before starting a relationship with me.”

Hastily you stood up as his body walked past you, towards your front door. Your fingers enclosed his arm, pulling on it, so he would stop. When he did and turned around, you saw the hurt and guilt in his eyes for a second before his gaze turned back to ice. You knew he cared. He cared but he was also impulsive and his impulse told him that his career was more important.

“Yoongi, you don’t want that. You love me. You can’t just leave me like this, you’re more than this awful egoistic asshole”, you brokingly sobbed, still holding onto his arm, eyes begging him to stay.

He shook his head, ripping his arm free from your grip. “I guess you don’t know me that well after all then.”

With that, he pushed you off him, slamming the door shut without giving you one last glance, as you glanced after his figure in disbelief, a deadly pain spreading across your chest and stomach, making you gasp for air as more tears covered your face, leaving physical marks of the pain your were feeling.

  • Garrus: Should I call you something besides your name?
  • Shepard: I don't think that's necessary.
  • Garrus: Hmmm... How about Polka?
  • Shepard: Please don't.
  • Garrus: Are you sure? You're as sweet as a Polka Dot.
  • Shepard: Do you... Know what a polka dot is?
  • Garrus: 'Course I do, Shepard. It's a frozen treat on a stick that humans like to eat.
  • Shepard: That's a popsicle.
  • Garrus: Right. That's what I said.

(you’re in luck, as non-binary and/or genderfluid Jeremy is one of my Big Headcanons)
(internalized transphobia and a little weed lies ahead, be warned)

THAT’S A GIRL SHIRT

Jeremy’s heart sank. Of course, they should have known that wasn’t allowed-

YOU ACTUALLY WANTED TO WEAR THAT AND WEREN’T MERELY PICKING SOMETHING WITHIN ARMS REACH?

Well, yeah, I um-

YOU EVEN STUTTER IN YOUR THOUGHTS, I REALLY DO HAVE MY WORK CUT OUT FOR ME. WAIT-

Jeremy felt a tingle in their brain.

-NEW INFORMATION AVAILABLE. PAUSE WHILE I UPDATE.

To Jeremy, the world seemed to stop. The people in the store came to a glitching halt, and they felt unable to move. The Squip made a sound that was disconcertingly similar to the Windows XP startup sound.

YOU AREN’T A BOY.

Autism is not an umbrella term

…and I seriously think its use as an umbrella term for not just autism but also the comorbid conditions that often run along with autism by doctors, teachers, and parents deeply explains a lot of the use of the functioning labels and the misunderstanding of how it is a spectrum (as in not linear).

Okay, to start:

Rarely is an autistic just autistic. Can it happen? It is possible but it rarely does. And because autism is a pervasive developmental disability, any other condition we develop (comorbility or not), autism will affect how it presents itself. Usually an autistic is almost expected to have at least one comorbid condition.

Common comorbid conditions:

•ADHD
•Sensory Processing Disorder*
•Dyspraxia
•Learning Disabilities such as dyslexia/dyscalculia
•Epilepsy
•OCD
•Tourette’s
•Auditory Processing Disorder
•Anxiety
•Depression
•Sleep problems and disorders
•Intellectual Disability
•GI/digestion problems

*Now part of the diagnostic criteria for ASD in the DSM V and doesn’t need to be diagnosed separately. Not sure if the ICD 10 criteria includes sensory issues as part of the diagnostic criteria.

The thing is that the comorbid conditions should be diagnosed separately so that they can be properly treated and accommodated for. Yeah, except that often doesn’t happen. It’s happened with me and I see it all the time with my students and with riders at the barn that I assist with.

My own doctors love to lump whatever they can under autism so they don’t have to address it. Never mind that I could use some OT for the dyspraxia I deal with, an official diagnosis and some treatment for the ADHD I know I have, and whatever will help for auditory processing disorder (besides an official diagnosis to further help with accommodations when I go back to school next spring). I really should start pulling out that “I’m a teacher” card if it will force them to listen to me. The problems I have with that is:

•Most of my colleagues don’t know much about disabilities and shouldn’t be regarded as remotely knowledgeable on the subject

•My knowledge about these disabilities in adults came mostly from lived experience and self advocacy and not from any of my education course work. When it comes to kids, I got additional knowledge by working with disabled kids.

•Not everyone has this ability.

No one isn’t doing the autistic community any favors by continuing this practice of lumping other conditions under Autism as if it were an umbrella term. We know it is hard to figure out what is and isn’t autism. I play the “Is it Autism or ADHD game” every day. But it benefits no one and hurts all autistics to keep doing this.

WHY DO WE NEED SKAM SESONG 5?

I personaly don’t think it that matter who’s gonna be main, but what I care about is graduation, girls and boys squads finishing school and of course, bus! all this years we waited for something, girls started their friendship and this journey because of bus thing and it should lead somewhere I guess? it’s like someone teached us about baking a pie but never letting us to eat it and see what it taste like. and also, as someone who doesn’t know a thing about Norwegian schoolers graduating I’m really interested in, I wanna see how this whole bus thing works, what happens and how. Julie, you can do whatever you want but please, let us see SKAM graduate : )
