i really need to practice i know

Hi! I've been trying to get better at drawing, but I just don't have the technical skill for it. I had had over ten years of weekly art classes so I know a lot about art, various techniques and theory, but I still can't seem to make decent drawings. I know I need to practice, but I don't know if the way I'm practicing is good since I'm not really improving. I mostly just draw whatever I want to, while trying to do it as well as I can. Do you know any specific methods/exercises to practice art?

are you using referencing to learn? That may be your problem but then again if you’ve had 10 years of art classes then you probbaly have been forced to use them.

It’s hard to give advice in a general sense rather than specific, what exactly are you having trouble with concerning technique?

you say you usually draw things that you want to, but have you also taken the measures of drawing things you need in order to improve yourself even if it’s not necessity  what you want to draw? such as basic shapes and bowls and fruit and stuff like that to practice form?

Pls consider coordinating with other artists who are victims of copyright infringement & finding a U.S. lawyer who'll file a lawsuit against these companies. Perhaps find one who'll work on contingency, pro bono, or a reduced rate, perhaps a law school will take it on as a practice case? The same company keeps infringing your works b/c there's no punishment for doing so. You all need a permanent injunction against them & for them to disgorge their ill-gotten gains to you & to be shut down.

Hi anon ^^

I’m so sorry but to be really honest, it’s not something I’m considering because it’s far too complicated. I’m French, I live in France, I don’t want to be part of a lawsuit that takes place in the USA even if it’s a pro bono case. I don’t know anything about the US justice system and I don’t want to find myself in the middle of a complicated and certainly long battle against companies like TeeChip (that will certainly say that they have a system of DMCA notice, that they are not responsible because it’s not people from the company but random people who launch campaigns at their site, blah, blah, blah)

Don’t get me wrong, I understand where you are coming from and companies like TeeChip and even FB deserve to have the law biting their ass because they are exploiting some kind of loopholes to exploit artists but it’s not really something I can be part of.

However, a friend is going to put me in relation to a French company that is a specialist of copyright infringement and DMCA notices even when the thieves are based abroad. I’ll see how it goes from there.

Thank you so much for your message! ❤ Seriously, thieves are apain in the ass

“I think I’ve has enough cookies for two years… Wait is that pie?” (said by Kitty. Because you said you needed practice with her)

Re: this post

Thank you! I really do need to practice.

This takes place between 3x04 and 3x11…well, perhaps at whatever point it’s coldest between those episodes lol. I’m also writing this as an extension of a Joan Watson headcanon I wrote here. (I’m so happy you chose a prompt having to do with pies!)

Joan had left her apartment as early as she could, hoping to catch Kitty and Sherlock at the brownstone perusing cold cases in such a horrible blizzard, rather than trying to pursue any killers still at large. She’d texted Sherlock and Kitty to let them know she was coming with a surprise. Neither of them answered, which was no surprise at all.

She let herself into the brownstone, carefully holding one foil-wrapped dessert in the crook of her left arm, grasping the second in her left hand, and fiddling her keys out of the lock with her right.

The front hallway was dim, as it usually was during the day, but Joan caught a glimpse of firelight from the library.

“Hello!” she called out, not expecting an immediate answer. The brownstone was huge, and if no one had heard her enter, she would have to search them out.

Tucking her keys into her coat pocket, she took the one dessert out of the crook of her arm to hold with her right hand, and made her way through the library and lock room. No one. Sherlock was either in the media room or the basement—the main floor was most often used for current casework.

But she found Kitty in the kitchen, making a cold cut sandwich for herself. Having made sure to step on the stairs heavily to further announce her presence, Joan didn’t catch Kitty by surprise, but she did look perplexed. Then she spied Joan’s foil-wrapped gifts and groaned.

“I think I’ve had enough cookies for two years…”

Joan raised a single eyebrow and set the desserts on the kitchen table.

“Wait is that pie?” Kitty stepped closer, her eyes glued to the dessert closest to her, seemingly forgetting the ham sandwich she’d just made right behind her.

Joan laughed. “Sherlock told you, didn’t he? I love making pies.”

“No, he… I’m so sorry, you look frozen. Do you want some coffee?” Kitty said, finally looking to Joan’s face and seeing her bright red nose and the snow still melting on her hair and shoulders.

Joan sniffed once and laughed again. “Please. Does Sherlock still keep my cream here?”

Kitty hummed her assent, grabbing a mug from the cupboard and going to the coffee machine to make a fresh pot. “I got your text. What did you make?”

As Kitty turned to look at her, Joan smirked, answering her with another question. “Where’s Sherlock?”

“In the—”

Kitty was interrupted by Sherlock’s loud footsteps banging up the basement stairs, just before he burst into the kitchen, his chest heaving excitedly against the buttons of his shirt.

“Watson,” he said, both hands in fists at his sides, an eagerness in his eyes she was surprised to realize she missed. “I smell apple.”

“You do,” she said, her smile widening at him.

A soft gasp sounded behind her. Joan turned to see Kitty peeking into one of the dishes, her eyes wide. “Who told you banana cream was my favorite?” Kitty said, taking the rest of the foil off to reveal the creamy concoction beneath. Sherlock breezed past Joan to pour coffee, for himself and for her, she noticed peripherally.

Joan blushed slightly, but trusted the lingering cold in her skin concealed it. “No one actually. I just know you love banana smoothies. And, well, I’ve made them for you so many times, I thought you’d like the pie version too.”

Kitty turned to look at her, and Joan was dismayed to see tears in the young woman’s eyes. Before she knew it Kitty was hugging her. Joan tentatively returned the hug, catching the scent of Kitty’s shampoo and the subtle perfume she used that always reminded Joan of cherry blossoms.

“No one’s made me a dessert for…for so long,” Kitty whispered to her, slowly backing out of the hug, sniffling self-consciously, turning half away from Joan.

Sherlock had set their two mugs of coffee on the table, and now handed small plates to Kitty to give her something to do. Wise. Joan gave him a small smile of gratitude.

“What was that about having had enough of cookies for two years then?” Joan asked, making her tone light as she shrugged off her coat and draped it over a chair. Sherlock had already laid out silverware, and was now peeling back the foil on the apple pie as if it was a Christmas present and he was eight years old.

“Oh,” Kitty gave a soft laugh, sitting down and staring intently at the empty plate in front of her. “That’s Sherlock’s fault.”

“What?” Sherlock spoke with his mouth already full of pie. He was eating standing up, as he often did.

“He’s got a new coping mechanism. Instead of Yorkshire pudding he’s baking cookies now. I won’t let him throw them away,” Kitty explained, not even looking at Sherlock. She gifted Joan with one of her conspiratorial smiles, even though tears were still shinning in her eyes.

“We give some to Marcus and the Captain,” Sherlock said, after swallowing this time. But he immediately put another spoonful of apple pie in his mouth, chewing happily.

“And not me because…?” Joan raised her brows at Sherlock who raised his brows back, refusing to speak with his mouth full now.

“They’re not…always very good,” Kitty said, holding up her plate when she saw Joan was cutting the first piece of banana cream pie for her. Joan held back a laugh, and glanced at Sherlock. He didn’t look at all offended. He was going to eat himself into a food coma if he wasn’t careful.

Joan finally sat and began enjoying her coffee. Sherlock had put just the right amount of cream in it. The brownstone kitchen settled into an easy silence, while the warmth steadily crept back into Joan’s limbs.

learning vocabulary from reading

hey guys! I just commented on someone’s post about this, and I realized I haven’t shared my method with y’all yet. I started doing this recently, with Jane Eyre in spanish! there’s a lot of words I don’t know, so this is really helping me! hopefully it comes in handy for you guys, too!

step 1: read the passage.

obviously, to learn vocabulary, you need to read the vocabulary you’re learning. but here’s the thing: don’t stop to learn the vocabulary. i want you to read the entire passage and try to understand it as best you can. you need that reading practice, too!

something my spanish teacher taught me is that when you immerse yourself in something that’s challenging and “monotonous”, you get overwhelmed very easily and do worse than you would if you slowed down at worked at your own pace. (monotonous meaning without change, i don’t mean to say it’s boring. the idea is if you stare at the same page for too long, you zone out.) she said that listening is the hardest, because students can only pay attention for ~30 seconds before getting stuck and being unable to focus on the rest of the listening. (because of this, she pauses the listening every once in a while to ask questions).

because of this, it’s best to section off your reading in chunks. if it’s a short article, you can read the whole thing through. but if you’re reading a challenging book, where the chapters are more than a few pages, you’ll want to break it up - or else you’ll forget what you’re doing!

step 2: underline unknown words.

you can do this during or after reading. for me, i haven’t figured out which works best yet. go through the section and underline any words you don’t know - even if you could guess their meaning from context. basically, anything you haven’t studied. if you can’t think of the word in your target language while speaking in conversation, you should probably underline it.

if done during reading: make sure you don’t focus on the unknown words! underline them in passing while trying to understand the reading as a whole.

step 3: make a list of those words!

you can do this in the margins or on a separate piece of paper. you’ll want to make the list so that there’s the unknown word, then room for two more words, then however much space you want between your list items. (for instance, using 4 lines on a page: unknown word / space to write / space to write / space between vocab words

step 4: guess the meaning!!

this is what that extra space is for! go back through the passage and try to understand the unknown words. write what you think the words mean, either by literal translation to your native language, or describing the meaning in a phrase. this is super important because it forces you to practice using context to understand unknown words, and your basic knowledge of the language to understand things like whether it’s a noun or verb, singular, plural, etc. when using the language in real-time situations, you can’t just pull out a dictionary!

step 5: look up the words

plain and simple, use that final space to write the literal definitions. you might want to rearrange the order of your list, like putting the definition and the word side-by-side or something so you can study more easily. in the end, your guess doesn’t really matter; it was the act of guessing that made you improve.

(optional) step 6: check your answers

now, you can go through the list and see what you guessed right! you can be loose with how you measure yourself - for instance, if you didn’t know the word for “bush” but you guessed “some kind of plant,” by my standards that would be correct. you’re not going for the exact perfect meaning; that’s nearly impossible. but you got the basic idea of what it was describing, and that’s what matters.

totally optional, but one (arbitrary, probably meaningless) way i measure progress is by making a score for myself for each passage. correct guesses out of unknown words (in a percentage). hopefully by the end of the book, my average will go up!

step 6 ½: study!

finallyyyy, study the words! use your own methods. if you like quizlet or memrise, make yourself a deck using your list. personally, I use Anki, and I have a separate deck from my vocab list deck, meant for miscellaneous vocab that i learn from reading and speaking. on the other hand, if you like playing memory games to learn vocab, or writing the word over and over - more power to you! i’m not here to tell you how to study vocab, just to help you get a better grasp on it when you first come across it.

i hope this helps! happy studying!! <3

I really struggle to articulate this properly but I feel like a lot of abled people can recognise the idea of disabled people in theory but not in practice? And I feel this heavily affects accessibility

So for instance with disabled parking spaces they see them and know that they are for the elusive ‘disabled people’ but also they think “hey no one will need this right now” and so will use it because the idea of disabled people actually existing and interacting with a public space just doesn;t add up and fully form in their minds

And I think a major cause of this is the fact that a lot of disabled people have not been or continue to not be allowed in public spaces. Through ‘ugly laws’, institutionalisation, inaccessibility, abuse, imprisonment and other violence, disabled people have been forced from or never allowed into the public sphere and so the idea of us being there, existing in communities, in society is so abstract to abled folks and I feel like that really affects and informs a lot of attitudes that people have especially wrt to using things meant for disabled people

Advice for Beginners of Astrology

• Do a lot of research. Books are probably your best bet for learning astrology - the best astrologers have written books filled with information you probably won’t be able to find online.
• Take it one at a time. Don’t mix different parts of astrology together until you’ve mastered one part first. Signs > planets > houses > aspects is how I learned.
• Incorporate it in your daily life. Practice on your friends. Practice predictions on yourself.
• Keep a note journal/write notes in your phone. I do this because I usually find myself having random astrology related epiphanies throughout my day and forget them later. Keeping a log of how you feel under certain moon phases/signs is useful too.
• It’s okay if you need to google something when answering a question, doing an interpretation or if you just forget. No one really knows everything about astrology. We are all still learning. Don’t feel bad if you need to fall back into a resource, we all do sometimes.

i remember being in high school.. laying in bed every single night until i’d fall asleep, praying. i was never really that religious but… there was something i wanted so desperately: a boy. just one boy. to prove me wrong. to take away all the confusion and the fear. one boy who i could fall in love with and be able to tell myself, “i’m not gay after all.”
i know you understand, you’re the one living it.
this is version number 3,456 of this letter. there’s so much i know that you need to hear. but you and i both know the truth, and even though only one of us has ever said it out loud i know it’s the only thing you’re ever really thinking about. it’s the reason you feel sick before volleyball practice, why you can’t focus in school, and why you sit in your car as long as you can before coming inside every night. it’s the reason you can’t fall asleep, and the reason sometimes, you’d rather not wake up…
you had this whole idea of what your life was gonna be. so did your parents. i mean every one thinks they know who you are, and you’re so scared that you’re gonna disappoint them, that you’re gonna lose them. you’re gonna realize that it feels so much better to have one person really know you and love you, than to have 100 people love you, and never really know you. i know it’s scary to feel so out of control of a huge part of your life. i know that the world feels so big and you feel completely alone. i know you’d give absolutely anything to change this. i know you’re hurting.
all i want to do is reach through and give you a hug and let you know that everything is going to be okay. but listen to me when i say: the struggle you’re going through right now is gonna make you who you are. it’s gonna make you so strong. it’s gonna make you so proud. they say sadness is just the absence of happiness, the more you hurt only means the stronger you’ve ever felt love. consider yourself lucky.
one day soon all of the anxieties and sleepless nights are gonna make the sound sleeps you’ll have more beautiful than some people could ever understand. you’re going to appreciate every. little. thing. there’s one thing i believe in this world more than anything, everyone deserves to fall in love. you deserve to fall in love. and not to ruin the surprise, but.. you’re going to. you’re gonna get to fall in love with a girl and it’s going to feel like your heart is on fire. listen, you’re just gonna have to trust me on that because there’s really no words to describe it. i’m going to tell you a secret. of course, you’ll figure this out on your own but, one day you’re gonna go into the abyss, and you’re gonna set up a little camp with a tall white flag: surrendering yourself to who you are. and one day other people in that abyss, just like you, they’re gonna see that flag, and you’re gonna help them surrender to themselves who they truly are. and even though i know it sucks not having a flag to guide you, your flag’s gonna guide others and you will never feel more proud of anything. it turns out you’re not so different, and you’re definitely not alone. i know you don’t feel this way right now, but, i love you.

FINALLY DONE! This summer I worked at Zara and I wanted to draw my all team to thanks them for their welcome! Some of them were really kind, some were… ok ^^ And I also needed to practice a little because i haven’t done a lot of drawings during my “vacations” :p

You are more than 4K following me!!! that’s CRAAAAAAAZZZZZYYYY thank you sooo much for the support it really motivates me :D (by the way sorry for the poor english T-T) I would like to add an “ask” link on my tumblr theme without changing everything…but I don’t know how… but I will find (: !

Ta-da!! Here it is! I finally finished it! :’D I know I already made a comic for this scene but my brain decided it would be a good idea to animate it because I need more practice. And like I said, it’s nothing special at all; just your normal hugging and talking it out.

But here you go @scribefindegil!! I know there was absolutely no need for me to do this, but it’s just in my nature to do stuff like this. Hope ya like! :D My fave part would definitely be the shine on the glitter. There are mistakes and things don’t look good. Hopefully the dialogue is readable. Lot of trial and error with this one.

I see people saying they’d be sad if Yuuri didn’t win the Grand Prix but tbh you know what I need? Yurio to win the Grand Prix. That boy deserves it. Sure, even I’d be a tad livid if Yuuri lost to anyone but Yurio. And I’m not dismissing the fact that Yuuri’s worked really hard to rise up from his slump.

  • Yurio really worked for it. The boy has persistence and determination.
  • He has a crazy amount of ambition that really can’t be deterred.
  • He’s a 15 year old competing with people several years older than him.
  • He’s worked hard, practically selling his soul (in his own words, lmao, this over-dramatic child) to Lilia Baranovskaya to get better, and he became so much more disciplined.
  • He’s tried getting over Viktor forgetting his promise, willingly competed with Yuuri to determine who gets Viktor, and he didn’t even make a tantrum about the results, which would have been understandable if he did, given that he’s a teenager, and handled it as maturely as he could.
  • His own parents never attended his practices or took him to them, instead leaving his grandfather to do so.
  • Even when he dedicated his performance to his grandfather and he failed to show, he still put his all into it, however hard it was, and managed to impress everyone.
  • He’s the main provider for his family and he’s only goddamn 15.
  • Despite his rage at Yuuri and Viktor, he never once treats the people around them horribly, recognising that they’re people who just happen to be friends/relatives of Yuuri and Viktor.

Tl;dr this boy is just a teenager and while I recognise that Yuuri’s the protagonist and will most probably win, I would be so much happier watching Yurio win because of the effort he’s put in despite going through that much shit. Not that Yuuri hasn’t put effort, but I feel Yurio really does deserve it.

Just started to watch this series on Netflix (idk about other countries, but here in Mexico it was added yesterday). I’m only in episode 3 BUT I have to say that it is fun and interesting. There’s a disturbing lack of wigs and some of the costumes are… suspicious? very inaccurate? But there are some good things to see:

  • LOTS of furs. Of course, that’s practically the theme of the series, the fur trade. So we have a lot of fur garments and accessories. Maybe a little bit too much? (look for the girl with little fur hair accessories). You know, enough fur that if it were real, all of the members of PETA would have a collective heart attack.

  • There’s a guy who looks as if he were Daniel Radcliffe’s cousin. His Irish cousin. (Who is also the guy from Hemlock Grove but looks SO much younger in this series. A.K.A. Landon Liboiron).

  • The locations are breathtaking, as well as the interior scenes and the ones in little cities and forts. I’ve only been in 1 place which was a fur trade spot and the whole isolation and wilderness spirit of the place is very well seen in this series. I guess it’s some Discovery stuff. IDK. It’s supposed to be set in Ontario and so (you know, the whole Hudson’s Bay Company) but it was filmed in Newfoundland.

On the down side:

  • A lot of short hair, and a lack of wigs. Even in the London scenes. O.o
  • The setting is just “late 18th century” but there are a couple characters and outfits that look taken from (at least) the 1810s.
  • There’s a lot of blood. I mean, a LOT. Like, if you don’t have the stomach to see a guy having his throat open on screen, then maybe it’s not for you. This is neither a good nor a bad thing. It’s just a fact.

Well, this is it. For now. This series have only 6 episodes, so I’ll finish quick, I think. I’ll let you know any other thoughts and if you’ve already seen Frontier, let us all know what you think!

You didn’t know how Lydia couldn’t see what a great guy Stiles was. He practically worshiped the ground she walked on, and still she couldn’t give him the time of day. Well enough was enough.

“Lydia I need to talk to you”, she slowly lifted her head from the book she was reading. “Stiles is really trying with you, but for some reason you can’t be bothered to give him a chance. Why is that?”.

“I have my reasons”, was all she said before turning her attention to her book again.

Shutting the book and placing it down on the table, Lydia looked at you in shock. “Well whatever those reasons are, they must be pretty stupid”.

“Excuse me?”, her voice lowered and your stare didn’t waver. By now you were at the stage where you didn’t care. You needed to get this off your chest.

“Stiles is a great guy, his kind, funny, caring. Not to mention he fiercely protects those he loves. I bet you don’t even know how smart he is. You’d be lucky to have a guy like Stiles. Because why his too busy chasing you, a girl that doesn’t even give a damn about him. I’m still waiting for him to notice me and how much I love him”. Brushing the tear that rolled down your cheek..

Taking a breath, you turned around and smacked right into Stiles. It was your turn to be dumbfounded and you were frozen in place. “You love me?”, was all that came from his mouth.

“Yeah I do, ever since we first meet”, you responded back before walking away leaving both him and Lydia struck with silence.
