HELLO! First off, you are AWESOME, I LOVE ALL YOUR ART, and you inspire me as an artist to do art things! So thank you for being my inspiration! <3 So anywho I was looking through your blog and came across an old ask that said you sometimes used pencil and scanned it into the computer for shading before posting it, and all ur stuff looks super good when I looked at the pencil stuff, so I was wondering what you use to scan your work? And what methods you might use to clean the scans? (THANK U!!!)

Sure! I use the Epson V700 series of scanners! Specifically, the Epson V750. It’s a nice glass 8″x10″ flatbed scanner that has the added perk (for us, at least) of scanning film as well*! So it comes with the equipment  and software to safely scan in 35mm and 120mm film, as well as being a sharp, calibrated scanner for scanning in small pieces of art and sketches. I think they sell a larger size of the V750 (that might be 11″x14″?) but I havent seen it and its way out of my price range for the kind of work that both Mat and I use it for – him for film scanning, and me for art scanning.

*Note the v750 is a model specifically for FILM SCANNING as well as documents, so check the v600 model line for sketches and lineart scanning! It’s the same basic build and software but without the film scanning on the side (trust me the film stuff makes it a lot more expensive than it would be normally bc not a lot of scanners do that well or come with holders) so the price tends to be a LOT more affordable!

Once I scan in my lineart, I tend to throw it either into SAI or Photoshop depending on what I want to do with it, but in SAI, all I really need to do is set the lineart/sketch to Multiply” and work on top of and underneath it! Typically this preserves the lines I want while letting me clean the lines up and add shading/texture/lighting/color etc. Anything I want, really! Typically though, I just tend to shade my lineart instead of color it in (i don’t always like losing my lines)

So a sketch like this:

Will get cleaned up, isolated, and shaded and turned into this:

Pretty sweet stuff, amirite?

Either way, that’s what I have and thats what I use! I mostly scan black and white but the color is just as good and can be adjusted from the scanner software. I definitely recommend to check it out! I dont draw as much in straight pencil as I used to unless I plan on straight painting it, but that doesnt mean having a nice scanner isnt worth it and can cut down on workflow if you work faster in pencil lines than digital. Besides, pencils have this nice texture to them that isnt easily achieved with digital brushes so if thats a look your going for, all the better to get a good scanner that can capture it.

I love your artwork and i dont mean to sound rude about this whatsoever!! But i wanted to give a gentle reminder for future reference of your ocs- poc have light skinned palms! I understand your ocs are very magical and have skin colors like blue and yellow (and vitiligo? I love it!) But with characters who just have dark skin, their palms are whiter! You dont have to use this info on your characters, i just thought maybe that was something to know.

Oh yes, of course! Well, unless I actually forget about my own OCs, I don’t recall having any dark skinned character that goes more into the brown color (Aherän doesn’t really count since vitiligo includes his hands), but when they’re actually human yes of course! Thank you so much! :D

The process, what do you use (like Sao or other?). How do you blend the colors so well. Why are you so amazing? Do you know your amazing? Sorry I'm a bit new to your blog.

first of all THANK YOU!! youre very sweet i love the enthusiasm

the process:

i prefer paint tool sai but im flexible with clip studio paint & photoshop (im just reluctant to use anything without really sensitive pen pressure + stabilizing). when i draw i tend to start with the head shape, and then fill in from the eyes and nose and so forth. in more dynamic pieces (haha When) i start out really gestural with limited lines for the body movement, and then i add details (face, hair, clothes) at the end.

but to be honest my most successful (to me) works have been the ones where i just Go for it and the lines are really loose, even if its sketchy.

blending colors:

not sure what you mean by blending but for color palettes i tend to go for pink hues and warm tones, with pinks/yellows as highlights and reds/purples/blues as shadows. i like to start out with darker, less vibrant colors (although its not far off) and adjust them later with overlays/screens. i use a Ton of overlays hahaha

BIG COMPLIMENT I LOVE IT THANK YOU to be honest i havent really had a lot of time or energy lately to create stuff so when i do get inspired i really try to make it count, but not in the way that requires a whole lot of effort if you get what i mean? im just trying to draw things that make me feel good; simple stuff, little to no agenda. beautiful gay girls basically

doodled a human orisa idea and efi as a lil’ warmup!! i know this is gonna be a popular thing to draw but i wanted to give it my shot!

ronan crossed his arms to wait, just looking. at adam’s fine cheekbones, his furrowed fair eyebrows, his beautiful hands, everything washed out by the furious light. he had memorized the shape of adam’s hands in particular: the way his thumb jutted awkwardly, boyishly; the roads of the prominent veins; the large knuckles that punctuated his long fingers.

in dreams ronan put them in his mouth.

she was so beautiful, his brain kinda stopped. and it’s like he fell in love for the first time, all over again

based on their first meeting to be honest it crossed my mind that hEY IT LIKE A GROOM SEEING THE BRIDE FOR THE FIRST TIME bc custom says grooms cant see the brides before the wedding itself idk smth like that

a very lovely dragon, nice and detailed like most apple emojis without being too much. 9/10

the color seems a bit off but other than that, very nice, minimalistic. 8/10

the thick outline seems a bit much, but other than that, a very nice dragon. i really dig the geometric design, 7/10

oh. my gosh. im fuckin. dude im almost crying tears of joy just looking at this. this is one of the best dragons ive ever had the absolute privilege of setting eyes on. his cute eyes! his cute nose! his cute little horns!! the way he holds that little pearl!!! unratable/10, i dont even know any numbers high enough to do him justice. i would buy a samsung phone just for this emoji.

the shading seems a bit off, but other than that, this is one solid dragon. 8/10

listen i hate to say it but. really dude. htc did you even try on this one? come on it has no personality! minimalism is good but only to a point! it really pains me to say this, but 4/10. he has potential, but hes just not there yet.

the coloring is a nice step away from the bright green we usually see, and even looking past that shes just a gorgeous dragon in general. even without gradients, shes a very dynamic and interesting dragon. 11/10

this one looks a bit mischievous, very nicely done. he looks like hes about to pull a fun (but harmless) prank on you, hes just waiting for a good opportunity. 9/10, definitely a dragon with a personality.

a bit on the grumpy side, but that wont hold him back from being an interesting dragon. nice and minimalist while still keeping the dragon aesthetic going (looking at you thc) 8/10

wow that is a pretty color! and the tongue! id give it a 10, but the eyes seem a bit blank, could use more personality. 9/10 (at least she has eyes, thc)

somehow seems to stand apart from the other designs, but im not sure how. i really dig the beard though. 10/10, good design all around.

now that’s a dragon! its a very dynamic pose, while still keeping a nice simplistic design. he looks really soft too, id love to hug him. 12/10
