yeah well I’ve got my art entrance exam in less than 2 weeks and I have to get hang of traditional techniques again and start studying some shit, super boring stuff but that I must do if I want to finally get into art school this year -____-

The first one are simple ponies. AJ is smirking because she has color while Rares is in b/w, what a loser lol

The second and third ones are AJ and Rares from my fantasy AU. It’s a very old mlp AU of mine that I usually bring up when I work traditionally, because for some reason, it just comes naturally to me. Also AJ is gonna hyuck you up

And last one is a simple Twitwi because, like the fantasy AU, it comes really naturally to draw her on paper

Anyway, expect more traditional stuff from me for the next weeks, hopefully, I’ll do better stuff than these by then :p



Hey guys! So I’ve been receiving questions regarding my note-taking style and strategy for quite some time now but I believe I have never answered them in detail. The good news is, I finally decided to make a post about this (plus, I had fun making the graphics :D). Note that I am a visual learner, so my note-taking methods may not be effective for some of you, but I hope you can all learn something.

Class Notes

I only use one notebook for all my class notes, an A4 grid notebook whose pages I divide into two columns.

I use the outline method for in-class notes, which means I write information chronologically, in the order that they are taught. Some teachers do not have properly structured presentations/lessons (good thing my physics teacher does) so when in need, I use arrows to connect related information.

Abbreviations to me are one of the most important things to master when taking notes. I personally make them up as I go along. Some examples of abbreviations I use are:

  • w/c - which
  • w/ - with
  • cpd - compound
  • envt - environment
  • digenz - digestive enzyme

It might be confusing, but to me, knowing the context and part of speech are enough for all abbreviations to be comprehended.

Here’s an example: ‘Indonesia’s tsunami pre-warning system is made up of two types of components’ could become ‘Indo’s snmi pre-warn sys 2 type comp’.

After Class

The first thing I would do is highlight keywords and terminology (and sometimes formulas). For physics, since my teacher is relatively succinct, I don’t really highlight, but for humanities and biology, I look for words that would be expected by a mark scheme, words that are crucial to the understanding of each particular piece of information.

I would then check if the material taught coincides with the syllabus, and if not, note down any points that are missing or have yet to be taught. You could write these on a post it or on the syllabus itself, but I prefer to highlight the syllabus’ pdf file.

Rewritten Notes

My rewritten notes are arranged based on the order they appear in the syllabus unless there are pieces of information that are related to more than one topic.

I use a black pen for rewriting notes as well as colored pens to write keywords and terminology only. I know some people who write whole sentences in colored pens but to me that is ineffective; we all have our own learning styles. When making tables, I usually use different colors for different columns (see the table for different types of radiation above) which is most often the color I associate with each word. For example, water would be blue, ocean would be a darker shade, ice would be a lighter shade, and water vapor would be purple.

I still abbreviate words in my rewritten notes, but they’re not as condensed as the ones in my class notes. Another thing I find helpful is leaving a bit of space between separate points especially if the page doesn’t have a lot of diagrams. I can’t think linearly, so I can’t remember super lengthy bullet points.

I use mildliners and a drawing pen to make my diagrams (more of these in my biology notes) but I only start with pencil if it’s a complex diagram. I rarely highlight my rewritten notes, but even if I do, it’s usually only the headings and formulas.

I don’t have a rough draft for my notes, but I try to visualize the layout. I try to alternate between words and pictures/diagrams so that when I’m sitting for an exam, all I have to do is imagine that I’m looking at that page and I can remember where everything is.

Miraculous Headcanon

Warning: i have been adding to this headcanon for nearly a month so it is pretty long xD OOPS SORRY NOT SORRY (i did put a cut though, so, yeah) NO REGRETS

  • Marinette is a youtuber
  • Her channel consists of mostly sped up videos of her drawing designs and making her designs. Some have voice over, some have soothing and relaxing music.
  • Her channel blew up
  • Partially because, wow, she’s really talented for only being in high school
  • And people just really enjoyed watching her work, it’s very unique
  • Sometimes she’ll do simple tutorials on how to make a simple skirt, or get started on designing, but those are more rare videos
  • She has a second channel that is less professional than her main, where she posts a bunch of random vlogs that her and Alya take whenever they do something interesting, or even some random challenges. Most of these videos involve Alya, since she got Marinette to make a second channel for fun vlogs
  • Her international followers (#subtitles) find it very interesting anytime she talks about Ladybug and Chat Noir because there are legit superheroes in Paris and no other part of the world has seen that.
  • They vlog all sorts of things
    • going to the craft store for new fabrics, buttons, patterns, literally anything Marinette needs for her next project (or they’re just bored)
    • They record random things they see around Paris, cosplayers of LB and CN, pigeons being weird, aesthetics
    • Alya and Marinette have a weekly “review” which includes Alya buying something for Marinette to review- mostly themed around her favorite heroes
    • Sometimes just walking around the mall. Nino is spotted in many vlogs as well, but Adrien is rarely seen since he is already around so many cameras in his normal life Marinette is respecting his privacy
  • A lot more below the cut because I have been working on this headcanon for nearly a month!

Overview: Four years have passed since the war and you and Draco are now soon to be married. But as his insecurities catch up to him, he begins to wonder why someone like you would ever want to be with a former Death Eater like him. For who could ever learn to love a beast?

Note: Draco x Reader Beauty and the Beast retelling loosely based off of “Something There” (see below).

Draco watched as you twirled around the kitchen of the Malfoy Manor, a sterling silver spoon in hand. In a cozy robe and pajamas, he thought you were quite a sight. His favorite sight in the world, nevertheless.

“One more week,” you sang. “That’s seven more days until we’re married.” After placing your dishes in the sink, you sat down at the dining table next to Draco. “Can you imagine?”

“Seeing as we already live together,” said he, gesturing to the vast interior of the manor, “I quite easily can.”

You nudged him with your elbow. “It’s still not the same. Soon, we’ll be Mr. and Mrs. Draco Malfoy.” You paused. “Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?”

Although he replied with a nod, Draco couldn’t help but frown at the sound of his last name. What was once a word he flaunted about and held to the highest esteem had turned into a scarlet letter after the Second Wizarding War.

He furrowed his eyebrows, dragging his spoon along the rim of his bowl. Soon, you would bear the name Malfoy. Malfoy. A name tarnished and sent to Azkaban and back as nothing more than a patch on his parents’ clothing.

And the more he thought about it, the more Draco realized that wasn’t a burden he wanted to share with you.

A day passed and Draco still had an unsettling feeling in his stomach. It wasn’t uncommon for him to wear long-sleeved shirts, but now he could hardly bare glancing at his Dark Mark.

Is this what being a Malfoy meant?

“Draco,” you said, climbing into the bed as you stared at his back, “what’s the matter?”

He tucked his hand under a pillow. “Nothing, love. Just tired, is all.”

“I don’t believe you.” He felt the mattress shift ever so slightly as you drew nearer to him. “Before all else, Draco, I am your friend. Before being your fiancée, your girlfriend, your anything– I’m still just your best friend.” You peered over at him, his eyes focused on the wall. “So why on earth would you expect me to believe that lie?”

Sighing, Draco turned on his other side to face you, propping himself up on his arm. He noticed the way you scrunched your nose in concern, a wrinkle appearing between your eyebrows.

“Please, tell me what’s wrong, babe,” you pleaded. Your face softened as you examined his tired eyes, bringing your hand to brush against the cold skin of his face. “Is it the wedding? Are we going into this too soon?”

“No, of course not. It’s not–” He took a deep breath, unsure of what he wanted to say. Draco captured your hand in his, pulling it near his chest. He stroked the calloused pad of his thumb against your knuckles absentmindedly. “If I had to describe you in one word, it would be perfection.”

You quirked an eyebrow, unsure of how to react. “I’m no where near perfect, but– Don’t try to change the subject.”

He let out an indignant chuckle. “I wasn’t finished. I only meant…Just look at yourself and then look at me.”

“I see a witch and a wizard.”

“Funny,” said Draco with a straight face. “But really look. Because when I look at you, I see a compassionate, intelligent woman who fights for what’s right.” His eyes darted to his clothed forearm, the black mark almost visible through his white night shirt. “When I look at myself, I see is a monster. A beast. A coward, at best.”

You stayed silent, Draco’s hand still in yours. “I think your perception is tainted,” you said, withdrawing your hand from his to gently push back at his sleeve. He caught sight of a sliver of his Dark Mark, causing him to wince. Draco saw you reaching for a black marker next to your journal on the nightstand.

You uncapped it, taking hold of his hand.

“What are you–”

You silenced him with a brief kiss on the lips. You sat up and moved his arm onto your lap. “When I see you, Draco, I see someone who shouldn’t be defined by their mistakes.”

hi anon!! thank u so much!! im gonna try my best to offer some tips to u!!!! im still learning with anatomy as well (& im not so good with tutorials…) so bare with me:

SIMPLIFY AND BREAK DOWN EVERYTHING IS MY #1 PIECE OF ADVICE. for example lets start small with a hand. instead of looking at a reference or ur own hand and trying to perfectly capture every detail, look at the basic shape!! its p much a square for ur palm, 4 sticks of varying sizes, and as i have described here the little pouring part of a teapot (idk what its called) for a thumb.

u can apply this anywhere!!! just like the hand, other parts of the body like legs and arms have basic shapes too!! ive seen many artists explain it this way so i picked it up as well, but they have this rhythm where one side is curved and the other is straight (its more subtle in realistic art, but if ur going for cartoony u can exaggerate this too). depending on the drawing or sometimes if my drawing is small i’ll just make straight rectangles for arms or legs but rly it will make things more interesting and technically correct if u show these variations in the appendage shapes.

really the best thing in art ever for me is to simplify simplify simplify, im not great @ anatomy but learning to break things down and represent them in the most minimalistic ways has rly helped me a lot and made my anatomy look better too. to be honest i have not done figure drawings in ages and i rarely use real life references when drawing (IM NOT ADVOCATING FOR DOING SO, I KNOW IT HELPS MANY PEOPLE A LOT BUT I JUST CANT EVER GET INTO IT). whenever i use real life reference, i feel like my art becomes stiff since i tend to replicate the image too closely thus making a cartoony style have the proportion and anatomy of a real person which doesnt really fit the style.. i prefer to study the work of other artists especially animators since they have a great grasp on appealing simplification and stylized anatomy (bc u know its hard to have an animated show thats super detailed). craig mccracken and genndy tartakovsky both have really cool simplistic cartoon styles so i draw a lot of inspiration from their art (and i hope to use varying shapes and exaggerate my anatomy more like theirs as well). 

(one little other important thing i didnt rly mention but ill keep it short since everyone says this. of course u have to practice too. i know it sucks to hear “just keep doing it” from everyone when ur frustrated with ur abilities and dont want to keep doing it, but continuing to draw bodies will boost ur abilities so much. u can look at art and read a million tutorials, but actually drawing will continuously build up ur muscle memory for drawing arms, legs, etc and after a while it comes naturally!!)

tldr practice & study not just from real life but look at how other artists break down and simplify shapes of the body. also remember art doesnt have to have flawless realistic anatomy to look good! there are so many incredible artists who bend the rules of anatomy whether its as a stylistic choice or to exaggerate emotion or perspective, etc.

Once, someone told me that my art looks like painted with wind and I never stop thinking about this comment since then. It made me smile, because my art reflected - at least for someone - the way I behave when I paint. I never realised that on my own. My brain accelerates and I hear all kinds of noises except my own thoughts. I paint fast, but it’s not like I want to win a race. Painting fast doesn’t leave time to think or hesitate.  Thinking avoid accidents. My art is made of accidents.

If I stop, for any reason, there is silence and my inspiration to paint that particular piece simply disappears. it’s like my painting or drawing is something brief. Like. not exactly a feeling, but a sensation that I translate into the canvas and it only last in that particular moment.

As a Digital Artist, I started to ask myself if I would be able to surprise myself again. Nothing I was doing now seemed to be enough in Photoshop or any other software. I tried to find solutions without knowing the solution was out of the computer this time. I got out of my comfort zone a lot of time, but when do I got out of a one called technology? Rarely - and this was making me doubt about my hability as a visual artist.

Watercolor is exactly what I need at this moment of my life. Every bushstroke is a surprise for me. It’s more about my feelings and sensation than technique and execution itself. There are no ctrl+z this time. It is what it is and I love this, because it shows more of my identity than any other media. I trully believe I’m doing something weird with watercolor, technically. I should spend more time mixing colors - but that would break my concentration and it just doesn’t work for me to spend 5 minutes mixing colors in the palette. And, honestly, I don’t want to be technical. I just want to feel good. And it’s working :)

Sighing again, I erased the same line I’d drawn at least 300 times now. 

“C/n!” I almost shouted, exasperated. 

“What?!” C/n asked, startled by my outburst since it’d been quiet in my room for awhile now. 

“Can you please sit still? I’ve been trying to draw your jaw and ear for the past, like, 30 minutes and every time I think I’ve got it down or am close to getting it down, you squirm and I have to start all over again!”

“Sorry, y/n! It’s just hard to sit in this position for so looonnggg,” he said, dragging out the last word. 

I let out a frustrated growl and he smirked. 

“Well, what position do you prefer?” I rubbed my temples in frustration. 

I swear, I loved this boy but he sure knew how to test my patience. 

“Mm, missionary, to be honest,” he shrugged, his face devoid of emotion like it always was right before he cracked up at his own joke. 

“Ugghh, fuck you!” I whacked him in the arm with my sketchpad, his shoulders shaking as he roared with laughter. 

He could be so immature sometimes. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love his immature sense of humor. 

“I wish you would,” he smirked, eyes shining with mirth.

“It’s a good thing you’re cute,” I grumbled, crossing my arms and glaring at him. 

“Why?” He asked, sporting a shit-eating grin.

“Because if you weren’t I’d be using this pencil to stab you, instead of using it to draw your stupid cute face.”

“Oh my god, am I your muse?” He asked dramatically

“No, you’re my pain in the ass,” I rolled my eyes. 

He gasped, clutching his chest dramatically, “She called me her pain in the ass.”

“Alright, Romeo, calm down. Now can you please sit still?” 

“Only if I can sit on the floor, cross-legged,” he said, smoothing his clothes. 

“Anything to get you to sit still,” I said, moving off the chair I was sitting on, to plop myself on my floor. 

He stepped off the stool I’d sat him in originally and sat cross-legged in front of me. He turned his head to the side like he’d had it before, clenching his jaw. 

I dragged my eyes away from the delicious site of his side profile to sketch it more accurately. A few minutes had passed, the only sound in the room was some relaxing music I’d put on low, the sound of lead scratching over paper, and our soft breaths. I had moved on to drawing c/n’s broad shoulders, trying to get the shading and outline right when c/n’s voice broke the silence. 

“I never asked you what your project was for, y/n.”

I almost dropped my pencil, leaving a crooked line that I quickly erased.

“It’s a drawing project,” I said, trying to avoid answering truthfully. 

“No shit, Sherlock,” out of the corner of my eyes I could see a smirk on his face before he went back to talking. “I mean, why’d you pick me for it? Every assignment you’ve gotten so far in your drawing class has come with some prompt. Some reason behind why you’re drawing the thing.”

I pretended not to hear him, pretended I was too engrossed in shading the wrinkles of his loose hoodie. 

“Y/nnn,” he dragged out my name in a taunting way. 

My cheeks heated up and I bit my lip. There was no way he was going to drop the subject. He knew when he was getting under my skin. 

I huffed before mumbling, “I’m supposed to draw someone…that–umm–that…”

“That?” He asked, his voice gentle, coaxing me. 

“That I–basically a person–well someone…someoneIadmire,” I blurted, the words coming out slurred into one. 

I had finished drawing his hoodie and realized that the line of his upper lip hadn’t come out right. Trying to distract myself from the fact I’d basically revealed my true feelings for him, I looked up to study his lips only to find his wide eyes staring back at me. 

“I have to get your lips right,” I said, my voice sounding strained. 

Feeling awkward under his unwavering stare, I cleared my throat. He wasn’t turning his head back to the original position so I decided to take control. I shuffled forward on my knees so I was close enough, and reached a finger out. Slowly, my finger glided over the curve of his jaw and I heard his breathing shallow. I applied slight pressure as my finger reached the side of his chin. He obediently moved his head to the side. I let my finger linger on his skin a moment longer than necessary before pulling away and settling back in my original place to start again on drawing his lips. 

It seemed that my words had sent c/n into a strange kind of trance and anxiety settled in my stomach. 

My tongue stuck out as I tried to re-shape his lips on my paper. I looked up again to find c/n had moved his head to stare at me again. 

“On second thought maybe I should’ve chosen someone else. You can’t seem to keep your neck turned,” I chuckled softly, finding his antics more cute than annoying like I liked to act they were. 

“Sorry, it’s just hard to resist looking at you for even a little bit,” he mumbled, turning his head again. 

I frowned, wondering where my confident, snarky boy c/n had gone and how a shy boy with flushed cheeks had come to take his place. 

My own cheeks flushed at his confession, but I tried not to take it to heart. He couldn’t possibly like observing me, staring at me. 

“It’s alright, but just try to hold your head in place for just a little longer. Lips have always been tricky for me to draw and yours are giving me an especially hard time,” I chuckled, trying to lighten the tension in the room. 

“Maybe you should kiss them,” he suggested and I dropped my pencil my eyes flying up to look at him. 

Of course, of all times he chose this one to keep his head turned away from mine. Still, I could see the edge of his lips quirk up a bit in one of those rare smiles that he gave when he felt equal parts shy and equal parts bold. 

“And just what do you expect that will do in helping me with drawing them, hm, c/n?” I asked, crossing my arms. 

“If you can feel the grooves of my lips, you might find it easier to draw them. Drawing may be all about observing visually, but I think it benefits you when you observe sensuously as well,” he said.

I just sat there, my head fighting between what I desired and what I logically knew to be smart to do. 

“What harm could it do, y/n?”

I breathed deep. He was right. What harm could it really do? A million answers to that question ran through my mind but I focused on him instead. The delicious way his lips were frozen in that soft grin, the adorable bend of his nose, the way his eyelashes curled just the slightest at the ends. 

I moved to sit in front of him, his head still frozen in his pose. Finally, our eyes met. His were adoring and in awe, gliding over my face, drinking me in. I moved in, slowly, until my lips were just brushing against his. Internally, I was screaming, shouting for joy, and laughing giddily but externally all that I could do before I pressed my lips completely to his was let out a weak breath. 

What registered first was the slightly chapped texture of his lips, and then the softness of them underneath that. And finally, the fact that he was not pressing back into mine.

Pulling back abruptly, and overcome with embarrassment, I looked him in the eyes. 

“Why–why didn’t you kiss me back?” I asked, my confusion quickly turning into panic. 

“Because you told me to stay still,” he answered, eyes dancing with mischief, his breath shallow which told me I wasn’t the only one affected by what I’d just done.

Shaking my head, I let out a breathy laugh while rolling my eyes playfully. That’s when he gently placed his hands on either sides of my cheeks and pulled me in for the sweetest kiss. 

As we pulled back and regained our breath, I giggled, “You may be the worst model ever, but you’re the best damn kisser.”

“Well, then you’ve gotta keep me around. Especially if you plan on drawing any more pictures of me and need more help with…observing…my lips,” he chuckled.

“Oh, I’m keep you right where you are,” I laughed, before he pulled me in for another kiss. 

Preventing hand injuries from digital art

I got a question about drawing injuries, and I typed up a pretty lengthy response so I wanted to share it here as well.

I get asked a lot about hand strains and injuries, and it is something most artists have to face one time or another just because we work so hard for our dreams. I personally don’t get strains or injuries, both for art and for piano playing when I still majored in it, two main creative paths where hand/arm injuries are common. My hands rarely feel tired and when they do, I stop drawing. So when I get asked, I usually can only offer the fact that you can find a lot of carpal tunnel exercises on google and there’s nothing else I know about relief exercises, other than I find that flinging my hands also help loosen them up a bit.

The most important thing about this issue is actually prevention rather than relief. I would like to believe this approach is what prevented me from getting injured–I’ve never really been a push through the pain type person, and glorifying suffering and pain as a sign of hard work is definitely unhealthy, as those are huge signals from your body telling you to stop. There are many things that I know for sure strains your hands much more than anything else that I will list below, and I believe that, if it is possible for you, the most efficient way to deal with injury is to find out which of these things is the cause and working around it.

The first big cause is posture; if your arms have no support points (ie you have to hold your elbow up with your muscles or tense your wrist to maintain stability) you will strain much easier, just like how you get tired easier standing at an uncomfortable pose vs a well grounded one. So be sure to seat yourself so that you have somewhere to rest your arm while drawing, while your body is at a relaxed angle with full support. For a normal tablet, rest your arm and wrist somewhere on the table or the tablet. For a Cintiq or tablet monitor, try having it upright so that your elbow can rest on your desk, and your wrist can rest on the cintiq screen, and you only need to use your fingers to control the pen.

The second cause is your grip on the pen. This can be caused by your need for precision/speed of repetitive movement/pressure. Line art, or cross hatching, or pressing hard to get the darkness of the brush you need, are all high stress activities that strains your hand much more than, say, rendering or putting down a base painting. Knowing that, you can:

  • Use a higher brush opacity or turn off pressure sensitivity for opacity to prevent yourself from having to press really hard to get brush impact you want.
  • Go to your wacom tablet preferences if you have one, and set the hardness of the brush so that it’s easier to get the brush opacity/size you want. You want to have the problem of having to try to press lighter for lighter lines, rather than having to press harder for darker/thicker lines. The latter strains much more than the former.
  • If your grip of the pen is too tight purely because the pen is slippery/too small for you/hard to grip, such as old bamboo tablets, there are rubber tablet pen paddings that you can buy online, or you can just use a layer of masking tape all around the grip area to increase friction/grip comfort and make it easier for yourself to hold your pen. A Cintiq or Intuos Pro pen is ideally what you want your pen to feel like: have friction on the surface so your fingers don’t slip, large enough so it rests and takes up space comfortably between your thumb and index fingers without you tensing and curling your hand inwards really hard, and shaped so that your grip is stopped right before the cone of the tip, preventing slipping.

The third cause is the schedule of your drawing. This may or may not be possible to change because for a lot of us, a deadline is a deadline. But try to space your tasks so that you cycle between intense, detailed, hand-straining work, and relaxing, loose, more brainstorming work. The latter is excellent for hand rest while still being productive creative work. For example, if you are drawing comic pages, it might make sense in terms of efficiency to sketch 10 pages, then ink 10 pages, then tone 10 pages. But when you are inking those 10 pages consecutively, that’s when you give your hands no rest and your hand will start to hurt a lot, while you have no choice but to push through the pain to get the work done. Instead, try to draw these pages one by one, or have a few drawings at various stages of completion to rotate between. eg. you work on inking drawing A, then when you feel your hands are strained, switch to putting down loose underpainting for drawing B, switch back to inking drawing A, then start brainstorming drawing C and think more/draw less. Give your hands some natural times to rest up with less intense work, and you get work done without having to lose time by having to really stop drawing altogether.

As tempting as it is to try to feel like you are working as hard as you can to achieve your dreams and aspirations, while feeling guilty about resting/taking the more relaxing route, remember that your hands make your art possible, so treat them well!

Hi! To be honest, there is rarely any family who would support your artist carrier from the get-go. If any of you have that family, please go up to them and tell them you love them. Now here is the thing: a lot of parents don’t know “How” to support their artist child. And to everyone’s surprise, they think being harsh on you is the best support, thinking that if you can’t even stand this, there is no chance for you to survive in the actual professional industry. But here is one thing that a lot of parents miss out, every artists are super insecure inside, especially as a student. We get critics on our 5 day paintings and 8 hour drawings 24/7 and will keep comparing ourselves to those who we look up to. Most of us are already super harsh on ourselves. But guess what, they will never know until you tell them. Have a conversation time with your parents, tell them that what you need is someone who will fully support you, encourage you on your path and that it hurts to get negative feedback(different from constructive advice) from those who you love the most.

My family, who are very supportive now, has gone through similar things. And I had times when I had to hide my drawings under my text books because my parents thought I wasn’t doing my homework and all I do is drawing comic book characters(although I always did art after I finished my homework and got A in every classes I took). Their words very often hurt my feeling as an artist but we all learned and taught each other how to make things work out.  Let them know that it hurts, tell them that all you need to hear is: “Good job, keep on going. We are all here right behind you.” And that this alone will give you so much power and confidence to march on.

Long-winded thoughts on levelling up as an artist

Sometimes, I get asks from people who want to know if I have any tips on how to go about something when drawing. This is very flattering to me; I’m awed that complete strangers have the courage to contact another complete stranger and ask them for help with their art. And that this second stranger, in this case, is me is difficult to grasp. In a cool way. I would never dare to do that.

So thank you, all of you, who consider me an artist you’d like to seek advice from.

Sadly, I only reply to a very small portion of these asks. I want to respond to all of them, but unless they are very specific, I rarely get around to it. Broader subjects, such as how to convey volume and weight in a picture, or how to ger proportions and perspective right are good questions worth looking into, but they are still very broad subjects. Whenever I answer these kind of asks, I try to do it with pictures and thought through explanations. All of this takes a lot of time, and that’s hours that I don’t always have. To answer questions about the fundamentals of image composition and anatomy is a huge deal, and I don’t have any quick solutions to any of it, just a lot of thoughts and some experience. To package all of this into a tumblr post that is actually useful is close to a full time job. This is why I don’t do it so often. I wish I could, but I can’t. I’ll continue to post my process pictures and might, if people are interested, try on streaming in the future. We’ll see. 

Flitting lightly over that… I’ll leave you with what I, and many others, feel is the most important part in learning how to draw: USE REFERENCES.

There are a million posts out there stressing this a million and two times, but I’ll do it again. If you like the way I draw, which isn’t exactly realistic, but not exactly cartoony either, references is your best shot for practically everything. If you’re stuck: use references. If you don’t know what something looks like (you don’t): use references. It’s not cheating (seriously, it’s not). If you’re not an abstract artist, you probably already use references when you draw, in a way, even if its just your memory’s poor rendering of them. There’s no way you can know what a human, cat, cloud or road sign looks like if you’ve never seen one. So look again. I’ve come across a few good articles and posts on how to use references, so use your Google-fu if you’re interested. Here’s a gif I recycled for this post: 

There. Now I’ve said that, and can move on to some other thoughts that I’ve had. Anything below here might just be silly nonsense.

I’m pretty sure all artists have their ups and downs when it comes to their art. No one is on top of the wave all the time (and if there is such a person, they are probably a superhero of sorts). I dip frequently, then bounce back up and spit out ten pictures in two days, all in pretty regular intervals. The world ends whenever I’m at the bottom of my inspiration pool, because it ran dry, and I’ll never ever stop drawing or smiling whenever I’m swimming in ideas and creativity. At this latter point, I also forget to eat. I’m sure I could make a pretty nice, even graph out of my pattern.

But then there’s this other line on my graph. My level. Pretty much every artist I’ve ever talked to about getting better have had some sort of experience when they felt they’ve come a new, higher point in their craft. A new level of experience, often reached after finishing a piece that had something new to it. Something outside of that worn out “comfort zone”. I’ve heard it described as a feeling of achievement followed by a period of confidence, as “NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE I AM THE GREATEST”, and as everything in-between those two. I’ve experienced both (and a lot of in-betweens). Few things are as satisfying as this.

And how do you level up? Yeaaaah… y’all know how to level up ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Ninety-eight more random encounters, five bosses and nine annoying-ass quests, because there ain’t no rare candy or cheats in this game. Only your hard work and I love it. My friends tease me for it regularly, but:

I’m a grinder.

I’m an honest to god level hundred gotta catch ‘em all gamer who explored every inch of every map to get the crystal bunnies and I’m writing like I’m running out of time. Each brush stroke is another point of experience, and I brush my strokes like I run on Duracell batteries. I believe this is one of the main reasons why I’m an okay artist. I artist a lot. I also verbify nouns.

So here comes my second piece of boring, always given advice, as worded by Shia LaBeouf: JUST DO IT.

Draw. Draw. Draw. Hate it. Love it. Do it. Tell a friend when you get there. Proud of you. How much experience you’ll need to reach the point where you feel you’ve gained a level will vary of course vary and it will be hard work, but when you get there, it’s the best feeling of all. A girl worth fighting for ~♫

That’s my longest text post thus far, I think… and will probably stay that way. You might’ve noticed that I’m a pretty shy and private person, but here you go! A peek into my head. LLAP.

i have color questions (sorry if you've answered these before aaa you don't have to respond): how do you keep consistent colors? like with Finn's skin, do you write down the color's code or do you use a different shade every time? also, how do you correctly adjust colors to fit lighting?

These are great questions and I totally don’t mind answering them!

1). For keeping consistent colors, my personal method is to have base skin tones (and hair tones, etc) saved in my MS color set that I have readily available, then I tie my colors together with a little bit of an overlay or screen effect, depending on what palette I’m working with. This ensures that everything is very cohesive while also making sure I don’t have to start from scratch with my basic colors every time I draw my favorite characters. Overlays are my best friend in general when it comes to coloring TBQH!

2). My best advice for adjusting colors to fit lighting is to actually think of it as “fit the lighting to your colors,” if that makes sense. I always work my lighting choices around the palette I’ve laid down, and focus on utilizing 1-3 layers of shading to create a light source (the light source really just being my base colors - I rarely do a highlight layer in my work). I use either a dark pink or dark purple as my shading color, and work it as much as I need to depending on how dramatic I want my lighting to be.

For example, take a look at how I colored this illustration:

2. Shading (I used a magenta at 35%, normal setting)

3. Shading II (just very slight detailing for extra depth, magenta at 20%)

With really only 1 layer of shading I created a strong light source while also tying all my colors together! (•̀o•́)ง

These methods are the products of my own weird relationship with color, so I don’t assume that my methods will jive with you, but I’m hoping that at least seeing how I work can help answer your questions! ╰(*´︶`*)╯

Jensen’s Point Of View

           I walked down the stairs of the house and heard Y/N’s voice coming from the living room. I didn’t know what she was doing up so early. She rarely got out of bed before me; she liked to cuddle as long as possible.

           When I walked into the room, I saw her sitting on the couch, her legs under her as she talked on the phone. She hadn’t gotten her makeup on or her hair done yet. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever met.

She looks so pretty with no makeup on

You should hear her talkin’ to her momma on phone 

           “We’re doing great, Mama,” Y/N said, her Texan draw coming out full force as she talked to her mom. I loved it, “Yeah. He’s still taking good care of me. He just walked down the stairs actually.”

           I grinned, leaning down to kiss her forehead, “Hi, Mom,” I said into her phone.

           “Mama says hi,” she said, “We have the day off today,” she told her mom, “Probably just relax. We don’t get to do that enough.”

           I walked into the kitchen to see what I could find for breakfast while Y/N ended the conversation with her mom.

  Carl and Y/N started dating shortly after he got out of juvie, which shocked everyone since Carl was convinced that he was a real gangster and Y/N was the shining example of innocence. As far as everyone knew, the girl had never sworn, drank, did any sort of drug nor sexual act, or committed any sort of crime. Y/N was too smart for her own good and too sweet so how Carl convinced her to go out with him was a mystery to everyone.

   “So, was it really scary in juvie?” Y/N asked.

   She and Carl were walking down the street near their neighborhood. It was a Thursday afternoon and they had just gotten out of school but neither of them wanted to go home. Carl had tried to convince her to cut class with him but she refused, so they both stayed in class. It was a decent day in Chicago but it was still Chicago after all.

   Carl shrugged. “Nothin that I couldn’t deal with, ma.”

   He smirked as a blush crept onto her cheeks. The only reason he called her that was because it made her bashful and he was proud that only he could make her blush like that…at least, he better be the only one making his girl blush like that.

   “Really? Because, I’ve seen a lot of Scared Straight and I couldn’t imagine…”

   “Well, that show is a ton of bs to be honest. To survive, you just gotta get with the right people.”

   “Like you did?”


   Y/N smiled softly and leaned her head on his shoulder as they continued walking around the park together. She often asked him questions about juvie and Carl always used it as an opportunity to brag. It was one of the only things he thought he could do to keep the gorgeous girl on his arm. Plus, the way her y/e/c eyes shimmered when he told her a story about he participated in jumping someone or the stunned look she would make whenever he would talk about protecting her from anyone was worth it. He would do anything for Y/N, in fact, Carl thought he loved her.

    Before they both knew it, they were standing in front of Y/N’s house. The sound of Rihanna’s newest song was blaring from her sister’s, Y/S/N, room, signalling that she was the only one home, which was good since Y/N’s parents couldn’t stand Carl, they wanted the best for their youngest daughter. Y/N turned to Carl, staring at the tips of her pristine white Converse sneakers that clashed with beat up black boots Carl wore.

   “Thanks for walking me home again, Carl,” Y/N said.

   “Anything for you, ma, you know you’re my number one,” Carl replied with a grin.

   Y/N shook her head. “You’re a lot sweeter than people think, Gallagher.”

   “Only for you, I gotta keep my cred up.”

   “Whatever.” Y/N leaned forward to kiss Carl on the cheek, but he quickly grabbed her face and pressed his lips harshly against hers. She smiled into it, butterflies fluttering like mad in the pit of her stomach when she gently pushed him away. “Carl.”
   “I can’t help it, you’re beautiful.”

   “Thank you, but I should get going.”

   “Wait. I’m having a party tonight but it won’t be right if my queen isn’t at my side.”

   “I don’t know, my curfew’s at eleven.”

   “F–k your curfew, your parents should know that you’re in safe hands as long as you’re wtih me.”

   “It’s your hands that my parents are worried about. I don’t know, Carl.”

   “I won’t stop asking until you say yes.”

   Y/N shot him one of her rare annoyed looks. There was a short list of things that Carl could do to draw that look onto her face and one of them was pestering her. She never snapped on him or anything, but he would get the silent treatment occasionally and he couldn’t stand it when she wouldn’t talk to him. However, if he pestered her just enough, she would cave into whatever he was trying to talk her into.

  “Fine, I’ll text you later.”

  “See you then, ma.”

   A few hours later, the Gallagher house was packed with inebriated teenagers trying to dance, play drinking games, and make out. Fiona, Lip, and Ian were gone for the night so it was just Debbie, Carl, and everyone they invited. Even though Carl tried to remain calm, he couldn’t help but be anxious since Y/N hadn’t shown up yet even though she did text him that he was on her way ten minutes ago and she only lived a couple of blocks away from him. Had she gotten jumped? Carl knew he should’ve sent Ron to escort her to the party. If something had happened to her, Carl would…

   “Sorry I’m late,” Y/N said as she walked up to Carl and kissed him on the cheek. “I ran into some girls from school and we all walked her together.” 

   Carl wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her into his side. “It’s fine, I was just starting to get worried about you, ma. Have a drink.” Carl handed her a beer and she wrinkled her nose.


   “Come on, Y/N, don’t be a pussy,” Debbie teased.

   “I would say she is what she eats, but that’s my job.”

   “CARL!” Y/N exclaimed while the people around them dissolved into laughter.

   “What? It’s true, ma.”

    Y/N rolled her eyes at him but took a swig of the beer, not wanting to look weak in front of everyone else. The drink was foul, but she managed to finish it. “I don’t know how your dad is addicted to this stuff, no offense.”

   “None taken.”

   That one beer eventually turned into three and before anyone knew it, Y/N was drunk. She would childishly tug on Carl’s arm, insisting that he danced with her and by dancing, she meant twerking on him, which everyone was surprised she could do. Y/N spoke with people she normally would have never even looked at and she was overall a fairly happy drunk and Carl liked it. Somewhere during the party, Y/N wandered off with some girls and Carl was just chilling on the couch with Ron and some other guys.

   “…and then I pulled this out,” Carl said as he pulled out his gun, “and the wimp pissed his pants.”

   The crowd around him laughed or “oohed” in aw.

   “All over a pencil?” Debbie asked.

   Carl rolled his eyes. “Yes, over a pencil, Debs, no one shows me no disrespect.”

   “None,” Ron added.

   Debbie’s eyes widened but she walked away before she said anything to set Carl off. Carl ignored her and continued to tell stories about terrorizing people inside and outside of juvie when Bianca Holmes sat on his lap. 

   “That’s so amazing of you, Carl, you’re so bad,” Bianca said, running her French-tipped nails along his hoodie.

   “Yeah, I know.” Carl began looking around for Y/N. “Has anyone seen Y/N?”
   Bianca grabbed Carl’s face and forced him to look at her. “It’s rude not to look at people in the eye, Carl.”

   Bianca was the school whore, even beating out Debbie’s former friends. Her face was heavily made up in order to make herself look presentable and she wore a low cut tank top and the tiniest pair of jean shorts that anyone had ever seen. She ran a hand through her trashy extensions and smiled at Carl.

   “I’ve got a girl, Bianca, and she’s much more of a dimepiece than you,” Carl hissed.

   “Wanna bet?” Bianca snapped.

    Carl opened his mouth to respond when suddenly, Bianca was snatched off of Carl’s lap. He looked up and saw an enraged Y/N shoving Bianca away from her. Carl was in as much shock as the other witnesses as Bianca straightened.

   “Back off, Bianca!” Y/N slurred.

   “Or what? You’ll hurt me? Please, we all know Carl’s with you because he feels bad for you. He needs a real woman.” Bianca straightened up, practically shoving her exaggerated chest in Y/N’s face.

   “I don’t see a woman, I see a whore who has contracted nearly every STD under the sun.”

   The crowd around them gasped and Bianca charged Y/N. Fortunately, Y/N managed to grab Bianca by the hair and begin repeatedly punching her in the face. Bianca got a couple of scratches in, but it was obvious that Y/N was going to beat her. The final straw was when Bianca somehow got Y/N in a headlock, and Y/N grabbed the top of her head and yanked out part of her sew in. Bianca screeched as she released Y/N and staggered away. When Y/N straightened up, she delivered a final blow to Bianca’s gut, sending the girl to the floor. Y/N had scratches and bruises all over her face and body, but she had never looked cooler before in her life than when she stared down at Bianca with pure rage in her eyes.

   “Come near Carl again, and I’ll kick you a** so hard, your grandkids will feel it.”

   Bianca shook her head amidst the applause and Carl slowly walked over to Y/N, still in shock. Y/N turned to Carl and smiled, only for Carl to smash his lips into hers. She tasted like Miller Light and mint.

   “That was so hot,” he whispered. “I didn’t know you could fight like that.”

   “Had to show Bianca that you are mine.” Y/N placed a sloppy kiss on his lips again.

   “I can’t wait to tell you about this when you’re sober.”
