i ran a whole lap!

Later that night

I held an atlas in my lap

ran my fingers across the whole world

and whispered

where does it hurt?

it answered

everywhere

everywhere

everywhere.

—  Warsan Shire
they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who used to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered
where does it hurt?

it answered
everywhere
everywhere
everywhere.
—  what they did yesterday afternoon, Warsan Shire

i held an atlas in my lap

and whispered
where does it hurt?

it answered
everywhere
everywhere
everywhere.

He hummed as he drove up the familiar trails, hidden deep in the canyon. He smiled as he turned his lights off and pulled off the road. He whistled the classic tune to himself and the only witnesses that lived in the trees. He opened the passenger door and helped them to their feet.

She blinked slowly. Her head felt like it was about to explode. She raised her hand and felt the sore spot that had started to rise on the back of her head. Her vision swam as she stumbled through the dead leaves. He chuckled next to her ear. Her skin crawled.
