okay so i really enjoyed doing my feb botm but i did soon realise that i’d got my months all confused and was doing everything the wrong way round. so this time, i’ve decided to correct myself and do it right (lmao) (ignore the header tho ~ i was running out of time oops)
Well if we’re going to talk about non-USA words being used, “mum” instead of “mom” drives me up the wall lol
I know, right? There’s some words that you just “hear” in an English accent and it’s just wrong and jangly sounding. Some of the weirder things that have thrown me out of a story:
bench: apparently in non-American English speaking countries this is what they call the kitchen counter/work surface, in the context of a “work bench.” In the U.S., I’ve never heard a kitchen counter referred to as a bench, and couldn’t figure out why Dean was preparing a sandwich on one of these:
flat: I run across this one in a lot of AU’s, but also in canon casefic where they’re discussing interviewing someone at their flat or whatever and I just want to scream. Call it an apartment. Americans do.
trainers: you mean sneakers
pavement: In the U.S. this literally means the paved roadway surface. The strip along the edge for pedestrian traffic is called a sidewalk.
I could probably go on all day, but instead I’ll just reiterate my plea for writers to ask an American friend to give their work a quick once-over to de-Britishize the American characters’ dialogue. I can roll my eyes and overlook it to some extent in exposition (unless it’s first person narrative or close third narrative where the American character’s thoughts are on display), but it’s almost impossible to overlook in dialogue.
It’s a weight A thousand planets resting on my shoulders (I’m just not fucking strong enough, okay?) And it’s not just The pressure on my chest Or the ache between my ribs Or the way my back hunches forward Like I have something to hide (and so what if I do?)
It’s the way I haven’t felt free Since the day I turned twelve The way the circles beneath my eyes Are only getting darker Because the screaming in my head won’t let me sleep.
I’m 95% sure that people who claim that the Funimation dub did a 180 on Goku’s character either haven’t watched the dub at all or at least not since they were kids. And I don’t mean looking at a group of clips where changes are pointed out, I mean seriously watching the series. How you analyzed the series as a kid is not the fault of the dub.
I say this cause the Funimation Dub was my first exposure to the series and I NEVER got a “Superman” vibe from Goku. The only change that was significant enough to be a game changer was the Hope of the Universe speech and in the dub that was weird, out of place and out of character. I agree that that was something that was a big change and they probably did it to make Goku feel more like Superman but even when only looking at the dub, it was out of character.
“But you love Goku and think he isn’t selfish!” Thinking Goku isn’t selfish =\= thinking he is Superman so I would appreciate it if you stopped right there. I love Goku and his character arc and don’t care ONE TINY BIT for Superman. So OBVIOUSLY I see them differently and don’t think Goku is like Superman.
I judge characters based off of their actions and expressions NOT off of the words they said. Unlike a majority of this fanbase, I actually have a grasp on how characters work and how you CAN’T base your character analysis off of ONLY what was SAID and never what was DONE.
“Hey, that’s not fair! I don’t analyze characters like that!” Well good for you, I’m not talking about you.
-Zen sings it to you but he’s so passionate and he sounds so good that you can’t be mad. At some point he’s being serious.
-Jumin is so straight faced when he does it you’re not even sure if he knows what rick rolling is. You sweat nervously.
-When Yoosung does it he’s giggling so hard. This is his proudest achievement he can’t hold it together.
-707 really seems to be enjoying his music and you ask to share. The time has finally come. This is the moment he’s been waiting for.
-Wow you didn’t know Jaehee could play piano, it sounds so pretty but wait a second
Okay so I know that there’s a post that’s been recently going around being reblogged and such in the fandom called 80s Voltron vs 2k16 Voltron comparing the new voltron to the old voltron. But I’m here to tell you to please don’t reblog and delete it if you have. There is one picture that’s titled vanilla!Allura vs chocolate!Allura, and it’s very dehumanizing and degrading to refer to poc as food. So please do so that we can refrain from it getting shared around more, thank you.
the kind of people you should be worried about: white people who don’t support POC, white people who “don’t have a political opinion” & white people who think they’re not racist because they “don’t see colour”
