I made a new header! Honestly I need to stop updating my theme and start making real edits or something. But anyway that header. I used Emma for Hermione and Boyd for Draco, and another guy (bottom) whose name I don’t remember… which is pretty rude of me. God I knew his name but I forgot. I updated my info. There are still things to do like replacing some tags etc. Maybe later.

There’s probably no excuse left for me to avoid making graphics tbh but I still haven’t finished saving hp screencaps oh hey this can be an excuse.

  • the main character (nan astley/king) is like… my fave. i love her.

If These Walls Could Talk 2

  • divided in three segments from three different periods in time
  • one segment is set during the feminist movement in the 70s and features chloë sevigny as a butch lesbian with a motorcycle do i even need to say more??

Anatomy of a Love Seen

  • this is about two actresses who were a couple when they shot a movie together and now they have to go back and re-shoot some love scenes but they’re not a couple anymore and it’s sad af
  • i have basically never seen this movie in any rec lists but it’s actually one of my faves and i cry so much to this movie tbh

Saving Face

  • this is a good one
  • also pretty funny tbh!
  • it’s about a doctor who falls in love with a dancer and the doctor’s relationship with her conservative mom
  • it’s kind of rom-comish

Lost and Delirious

  • warning: very sad like super sad?
  • it’s about a girl who goes to a boarding school and so happens to become roommates with a lesbian couple
  • teen angst squared and multiplied with gay panic

The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls In Love

  • you may have heard of this one but if you haven’t it’s time you watch it
  • that woman who plays tina on the l word is a butch-ish girl in this one
  • VERY CUTE and chill
  • every time i watch this it feels like this movie is the director’s BABY like it seems like she cares about this story so much and it makes the movie feel so genuine and lovely
  • i want every baby lesbian to watch this, please, it’s my gift to you.

  • you may have heard of this one too but if you haven’t seen it yet it’s definitely worth a watch!

Notes for a young character designer

Thanks for your email.

I don’t work at Cartoon Network any more. But I’m going to give you a very quick portfolio review in hopes that you find it helpful! Here are some things I noticed when looking at your stuff - lessons I learned from brilliant people while working on AT for two years: 

 1) AVOID SYMMETRY. Humans are organic, randomly shaped animals. Perfect symmetry rarely exists in nature and if it does, it’s conspicuous - it’s the exception rather than the rule. Find interesting ways to throw your characters off-balance. 

Don’t repeat objects in twos - (buttons or rips or whatever) - it feels prescribed - cluster things in threes or fives if necessary. 

 2) AVOID CONCAVITY - I don’t know what else to call this. But it’s those lines that go “in” rather than “out”. You are using inward sloping lines to describe many of your characters. As an exercise, try using outward, rounded, voluminous lines to draw EVERYTHING. Humans are fleshy lumps connected together by other fleshy lumps. Each mass is either in front of or behind other masses and as a designer, it’s your job to tell the animator where it is. As a designer, you are providing a technical blueprint for the location of masses. 

Only occasionally allow a concavity to connect two convexities. Look at the work of Robert Ryan Cory (spongebob), Tom Herpich (Adventure Time) or Phil Rynda (AT / Gravity Falls) - master character designers - for examples of this. If you need to, trace a couple of their drawings and you will see what I mean. 

 3) AVOID GRAPHIC DETAILS - Some shows use a graphic style; it’s very appealing and looks clever when done right. But in animation, everything needs to move in space - so if you use a graphic element - it needs to correspond with an actual 3D thing that can move. Therefore it is better to start with a voluminous style and then revert to graphic elements where appropriate. Art directors will look for this. Do not jump straight to graphic representation if you do not yet know what you are representing.

Look at the work of Tiffany Ford and Jasmin Lai for amazing examples of volume expressed graphically.

 4) STUDY JAMES MCMULLEN - To truly understand volume, and fully respect your subject, you should read very carefully High Focus Figure Drawing by James McMullen. Slow down and think about drawing “around” your subjects. It’s a truly meditative experience when you get there. Think about the weight and mass that your characters, props and effects are experiencing. Many students from SVA - Tomer Hanuka, Becky Cloonan, Rebecca Sugar, James Jean - studied under McMullen’s philosophy and you can see this common richness in their work. 

Jeffrey Smith, a top student of McMullen’s now teaches life drawing at Art Center. These are two of the best illustration schools in North America - anyone who is interested in drawing living things, should probably read his book. Also look at the work of Andy Ristaino or Danny Hynes - two other character designers’ whose work is seething with volume.

Note-Taking

Hey guys! So I’ve been receiving questions regarding my note-taking style and strategy for quite some time now but I believe I have never answered them in detail. The good news is, I finally decided to make a post about this (plus, I had fun making the graphics :D). Note that I am a visual learner, so my note-taking methods may not be effective for some of you, but I hope you can all learn something.

Class Notes

I only use one notebook for all my class notes, an A4 grid notebook whose pages I divide into two columns.

I use the outline method for in-class notes, which means I write information chronologically, in the order that they are taught. Some teachers do not have properly structured presentations/lessons (good thing my physics teacher does) so when in need, I use arrows to connect related information.

Abbreviations to me are one of the most important things to master when taking notes. I personally make them up as I go along. Some examples of abbreviations I use are:

  • w/c - which
  • w/ - with
  • cpd - compound
  • envt - environment
  • digenz - digestive enzyme

It might be confusing, but to me, knowing the context and part of speech are enough for all abbreviations to be comprehended.

Here’s an example: ‘Indonesia’s tsunami pre-warning system is made up of two types of components’ could become ‘Indo’s snmi pre-warn sys 2 type comp’.

After Class

The first thing I would do is highlight keywords and terminology (and sometimes formulas). For physics, since my teacher is relatively succinct, I don’t really highlight, but for humanities and biology, I look for words that would be expected by a mark scheme, words that are crucial to the understanding of each particular piece of information.

I would then check if the material taught coincides with the syllabus, and if not, note down any points that are missing or have yet to be taught. You could write these on a post it or on the syllabus itself, but I prefer to highlight the syllabus’ pdf file.

Rewritten Notes

My rewritten notes are arranged based on the order they appear in the syllabus unless there are pieces of information that are related to more than one topic.

I use a black pen for rewriting notes as well as colored pens to write keywords and terminology only. I know some people who write whole sentences in colored pens but to me that is ineffective; we all have our own learning styles. When making tables, I usually use different colors for different columns (see the table for different types of radiation above) which is most often the color I associate with each word. For example, water would be blue, ocean would be a darker shade, ice would be a lighter shade, and water vapor would be purple.

I still abbreviate words in my rewritten notes, but they’re not as condensed as the ones in my class notes. Another thing I find helpful is leaving a bit of space between separate points especially if the page doesn’t have a lot of diagrams. I can’t think linearly, so I can’t remember super lengthy bullet points.

I use mildliners and a drawing pen to make my diagrams (more of these in my biology notes) but I only start with pencil if it’s a complex diagram. I rarely highlight my rewritten notes, but even if I do, it’s usually only the headings and formulas.

I don’t have a rough draft for my notes, but I try to visualize the layout. I try to alternate between words and pictures/diagrams so that when I’m sitting for an exam, all I have to do is imagine that I’m looking at that page and I can remember where everything is.

Well, that’s all from me. I hope that this information could be of some use to every single one of you. Don’t hesitate to ask me questions if you’re confused about note-taking or any other problems you might have :)

Made this for a friend who needed some help with fire animation, figured it might be useful to someone else

this is how I approach any fire animation I do timing-wise and design wise. if I am doing something more cartoony I will use shapes that are suited to more flowing smooth transitions and a nice graphic look, if I am animating more realistically I will use more chaotic timing and a design that works better with the slight motion blur I always apply to realistic fire. real fire doent flow nice and smooth like water or smoke when viewed at real-time

I almost always animate fire on 1′s, though the cartoony fire can work on 2′s, you just have to be more careful of pops.

you can also animate more realistic fire with a slower timing, you wouldn’t want the above fire in the background of a calm scene. this is just an example using an extreme case.

Hope this helps someone who is struggling to rough animate fire that fits their specific style and scene timing.

The Signs as Makeup 💄
  • Aries: Liquid eyeliner. Because it's fierce as hell but also makes u rage quit, both of which are common Aries pastimes
  • Taurus: nude eyeshadow. Because it seems too quiet and subtle to be beautiful but yet, here Taurus is... I mean nude eyeshadow.
  • Gemini: colorful mascara. Because why? But also, why not? Put it in your brows n push some limits, like a true Gemini.
  • Cancer: white eyeliner. A staple for when you cry but don't want people to know u just cried, much like a Cancer might do.
  • Leo: anything holographic. Because it steals the show and it shines, which Leo's r known to do.
  • Virgo: foundation. You know a good makeup look needs some. It smooths everything out, like a Virgo w bed sheets.
  • Libra: smokey eye. Classic, classy and adaptable, Libra approved.
  • Scorpio: graphic eyeliner. It's mysterious.Who has the time? Who has the patience? So many questions. It's also bold, like a Scorpio.
  • Sagittarius: "no makeup" makeup. So many steps. It's an adventure to get there. which is.... exactly where u started.... life is about the journey, the Sagittarius motto.
  • Capricorn: red lipstick. When you put that on you mean business, and that is something a Capricorn can respect.
  • Aquarius: hair glitter. Bet you didn't think of that. It's cool n unconventional, like an Aquarius.
  • Pisces: green lipstick. It's different. Almost the exact opposite color of what u expect. Pisces has thought about this. It's a statement.

Sunday Spreads time!

Alright so I know these spreads are pretty basic BUT I really needed some straight shooters today for a very specific situation I wanted to ask about.

Anyway, I think some of you will find these useful. I’ve found the ‘Wires’ spread to be particularly useful in that sometimes it’s good to know where the other person thinks you stand, because that helps you determine if there are any misunderstandings between you.

I’m also thinking of making graphics for the spreads I’ve found while digging through the tarot forums (with full credit to the original creators of course). What do you guys think?

13 Reasons Why controversy

Because the response to 13 Reasons Why has been so controversial, I’d just like to point out some things.

As explained in 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons, the suicide scene was shown BECAUSE they wanted it to be painful for the audience to watch, as well as the rape scenes. Not because they wanted to be gruesome or inconsiderate, but because it is REALITY for so many people in the world and a lot of people like to pretend these things don’t exist or shield themselves from the reality of it; they ignore it because they’ve never gone through it, so they don’t care so much. So then when they see these scenes, they will be made uncomfortable and see what people are really truly experiencing and that it is not something that should at all be sugarcoated or ignored. IT IS REAL.

Secondly, for those saying it’s disgusting for them to show these scenes, THERE ARE WARNINGS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODES THAT SHOW RAPE AND/OR SUICIDE TO NOT WATCH IF IT WILL AFFECT THE VIEWER IN ANY WAY. These warnings are given specifically so that if you are not comfortable watching or believe it would cause a trigger, you should not even watch. So the fact that people are bashing the show for showing these scenes in relation to them being a trigger, the warnings are already made very clear in the beginning. They did take this step to make sure it wouldn’t just pop up and be any sort of triggers. The producers knew very well to be wary of that.
The show also worked with a lot of psychiatrists, psychologists, and leading experts in teen-suicide prevention. Though this still may not be enough for you to think they did everything right, they again did have the warnings. They are very aware that it could cause triggers and put some people in danger, but THAT IS WHAT THE WARNINGS ARE FOR. DO NOT WATCH IF IT COULD DANGER YOU. VIEWER’S DISCRETION IS ALWAYS ADVISED.

THE SHOW WAS NOT CREATED FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES. IT IS TO SPREAD AWARENESS FOR ALL THE ISSUES (suicide, rape, bullying) AND POINT OUT HOW LITTLE THE SIGNS CAN BE AND HOW MUCH MORE CAREFUL AND HELPFUL EVERYONE IN THE WORLD NEEDS TO BE TO THE PEOPLE AROUND US. As also talked about in Beyond the Reasons, they want to promote teaching boys the proper ways to approach a girl and gain permission to become intimate with her, always getting the YES to teach boys respect for women. This is very important because as most people know, it has always been extremely hard for rape victims to get help because of the “what were you wearing” “were you flirting” “did you lead him on” “did you directly say no” arguments that are so wrongfully executed—instead, 13 Reasons Why knows that this is an issue, as somewhat shown in the scene with Mr. Porter as he questions Hannah. So in the after show, they speak about how parents need to be teaching their children more about consent and less about just protecting yourself, covering up, etc. They are aware that the real issue is with proper consent, and that is a very important message to get across.

Coming from someone who has battled depression and suicidal thoughts and attempts, I must also point out that EVERY SINGLE PERSON, EXPERIENCES, THOUGHTS, REACTIONS, ETC ARE DIFFERENT. What one person suffering depression thinks may be different than another. Hannah Baker’s story is very unique in many ways yet also extremely relatable in many ways to many, many people and girls around the world. JUST BECAUSE YOUR STORY MAY BE DIFFERENT DOES NOT MEAN HERS IS INCORRECT OR LESS/MORE THAN ANOTHER’S. There are a lot of people who can relate to feeling as though you are NOTHING and of no worth to the people around you, just a burden that only disappoints everyone and makes their lives worse. This is a very real state of being and depression and feeling of complete worthlessness that people can reach in their lives, especially some young teenage girls, like Hannah Baker, and even myself, that will lead to suicidal thoughts, attempts, or completely following through with, like Hannah. They believe the world and their loved ones would be better off without them. Again, as someone who has attempted suicide as a teenager and worked for years to fight depression and overcome it, I can say that while the suicide scene did make me uncomfortable and was extremely painful to watch, I was not offended. I knew of the warning at the beginning of the episode, read it, and continued to watch because EVERYONE HANDLES THESE THINGS DIFFERENTLY. I UNDERSTOOD the purpose of including the scene and making it so graphic and realistic. IT’S REALITY, THIS IS HAPPENING TO PEOPLE EVERYDAY AND IT SHOULD NOT BE SUGARCOATED OR SHIELDED FROM THE WORLD; it needs to be made more AWARE OF by those who like to turn a blind eye to it, but it is exposed WITH WARNING. So again, if some feel as though a scene like this would be a trigger, IT IS ADVISED YOU DO NOT WATCH. Everyone is affected differently and they did not just insert it with no consideration for the affect it could have on those battling the same wars as Hannah.

To say Clay was an easy solution and could have saved Hannah by loving her—no, he could not have saved her by just loving her, that is not what this story is even saying. Hannah does explain at the end of her last tape as she exits the school that some people cared, but she felt it was only mediocre, not enough for her to want to stay and feel NEEDED and truly LOVED. So no, they are not saying Clay could have kept her alive by simply loving her, or that love can save someone, it is much more complex than that. What they are saying is that people can care, but not showing how much they truly care can affect someone in the ways it affected Hannah. It was not just one boy’s love that could have saved her, but the love and care of many people, for them to show that they truly cared about her being alive and DID NOT see her as worthless, an object, just another person on earth. She needed to feel as though they NEEDED her to stay, that they genuinely cared about her as a person and that her life was truly worth something, because she did not feel it was. When Clay says he could have kept her alive if he wasn’t so afraid to tell her he loved her, he simply means he could have given her a sense of hope, a sense of belonging on the earth, that someone truly, whole-heartedly valued her life and her as a human being, not an object.

The actress who plays Jessica also explained that she reached out to a family member who is an actual rape survivor, and she stated that she was pleased that the show was “not shying away from the ugliness” of these scenes because viewers will see what these people really go through–again, another topic that is usually sugarcoated and instead needs to be addressed.

13 Reasons Why is a unique way of telling the story of a teenage girl who committed suicide, and the reasoning for bringing it to screen was MOSTLY to promote awareness and shine light on things that are not talked about enough that the youth suffers every single day, things adults see as “normal teenager struggles,” “small stuff,” “it only feels like the end of the world and really isn’t,” etc. This show is being spread more than even expected, and that is a very good thing for those who are in need of help and have parents or peers that once ignored their problems and will now tend to them.


**an issue cannot be tended to/made aware of/more properly prevented if it is just sugarcoated rather than slapped in people’s faces (those who don’t realize how severe it is) like this show does. it can really change things and leave an impact.

**if you are at risk for triggers and do not feel you are currently healthy enough to watch this show, please take care of yourself and do not watch. or, skip episodes 9, 12, and 13 and read up on them instead. these are the episodes that can be triggers for those at risk, if you weren’t yet aware.

I hear so many people talk about how great it is that they didn’t get into comics, or that they stopped buying single issues of comics. They say things like “It was getting pretty bad before I had to stop myself,” as if they’re discussing heroin or punching elementary schoolers. Comics had ceased to be things that they consistently enjoyed and had become things that they felt like they had to finish. They had to buy every issue of every title so that they could potentially grasp one narrative. You know why a major book being a “standalone title” is often seen as such a awesome thing in comics? It’s definitely not because they come around very often.

There’s something so satisfying about holding a single issue of a comic book in your hands. It’s light, colorful, and reminds you of the good times you had before you had to start paying for the things that kept you alive. So I hate to say “Time to scrap that concept,” but the comic book industry needs to lean into the skid of what’s actually working. If digital comics are on the rise, do more to promote those. If people are more likely to read trade paperbacks or full-length graphic novels, have more writers working toward creating them. I would much rather buy a graphic novel for $16.99 than a collection of single issues (some of which are probably terrible) for $30.

I don’t think single issues of comics will ever go away, at least not in the near future. But I do think that a business model that deals mostly with what’s working is a good step toward making sure that the comic industry isn’t extinct in 20 years.

The Story of 2213 (So far)

Part 1: The History

2213 has its origins in my undergrad program and in my undying love for BBC’s Sherlock. I came to the fandom just after watching series 3 and was astounded by the wonderful meta and investigation that fans had put into examining the show and the original stories on which it was based. I was in my junior year of college at the time and looking for a project for my thesis. The idea of adapting one of the Conan Doyle stories to feature a female Holmes and Watson seemed only natural.

My co-producer and I chose to adapt The Boscombe Valley Mystery, mostly because of its straightforward plot and the fact that it was easy to translate into modern times. Holmes and Watson were made women, remained British, and continued to live in 221B in London. In all honesty, that production read as a BBC Sherlock fan piece (even the original music we had recorded for it had essences of Sherlock scoring) but we had fun with it nonetheless.

Two months after closing night, my adviser and I met to go over my grade for the project.  She gave me a wealth of positive feedback and asked me if I would ever consider adapting such a thing for television. I hadn’t considered it, I told her, and she told me to start thinking about it. She had a contact at Syfy who was commissioning work for their web series division and was willing to put in a word for me if I could get some material together. How could I turn down an offer like that?

The next few months were overwhelming – I graduated from college with a B.F.A. in Theater, emphasis in Acting. It was difficult to keep up with writing during that time, but I managed to draft three episodes and map out a first season before the end of the year. By that time, unfortunately, my adviser’s contact had left Syfy. Disappointed, and overwhelmed with other facets of my life, I put the idea on the back burner.

For the next year, I worked on the show sparingly. It underwent many changes since the original performance in 2015. Watson and Holmes were named “Johanna” and “Charlotte” respectively, they were moved to the U.S. (Seattle, my home – which I know well), and they were moved into a dingy apartment above “Hudson’s Deli” at 2213 Bell Street where they live today.

Part Two: The Show Now

By making the characters women in the modern day United States, I realized that there was a unique opportunity before me to have Charlotte Holmes not only be a “consulting detective,” but also a sort of vigilante for those wronged in the criminal justice system. What if, I thought, she tackled the crimes that were found in the system itself?

Conan Doyle himself was a staunch advocate for justice [x] and often stood up for the wrongfully accused, a character trait he passed on to his great detective. I’ve been inspired while writing this series by incidents of police brutality (and subsequent failure to prosecute officers involved), stories of wrongful convictions, and allegations of cover-ups of police wrong-doings.

That’s the cases themselves, though. At the end of the day, I’m most interested in the relationship between Holmes and Watson (Charlotte and Jo) and how adaptations have been getting that relationship wrong for over one hundred years. It is, after all, the greatest love story ever told.

Part Three: Moving Forward

I’ve been inspired the last few weeks by several Tumblr users to start getting this project off the ground. To those of you who listened to my self-indulgent ramblings about this piece of work, I thank you – you were ever so encouraging. 

I’m now reaching out to the masses to ask for your help. I’d like to self-produce the pilot episode (I have some people I can reach out to to help with this), but I need funds to do so. There will be a kickstarter campaign coming in the next couple of weeks.

I’m also looking for people to read the first thirty pages of the pilot and provide feedback to me. From that feedback, I’m planning to edit/write the rest of the episodes for season one.

And lastly, I’m putting feelers out there for graphic designers, musicians etc. who might be interested in contributing to such a project.
