i miss this show so much sometimes

A Slytherin/Hufflepuff friendship would include...

• Standing up for each other no matter what
• “Mess with them, mess with me.“
• Sitting on each other’s tables in the Great Hall
• At first you received some strange looks, but now everyone is used to it
• Swapping ties sometimes to confuse people
• Hanging out in the dungeons
• Hanging out in the kitchens
• Knowing all the passwords for your common rooms
• Occasionally telling the wrong password for a joke, and watching as they get locked out of your common room
• "Need some help there?”
• SO MUCH SMIRKING
• Being the closest of friends ever
• Having people be so jealous of you both
• Being literal friend goals
• Teaching each other the fundamentals of being in your respective houses
• "You’re like a cinnamon roll, how in Merlin’s name.“
• "And you.. well you’re… I mean, you’re nice too… sometimes… when you want to be…”
• Bickering now and then
• But only because you love each other
• Missing each other so much when you’re in lessons
• Watching the clock and willing time to go faster
• "I thought I’d never see you again!“
• "You saw me like an hour ago.”
• Being like iconic duos on tv shows
• You’re so different but compliment each other so well
• Having other friends in your own houses
• But preferring each other’s company to anyone else’s
• Getting each other’s opinions before doing literally a n y t h i n g
• Just always being there for one another
• No matter what
• Through the good times and bad
• Because you’re the best of friends
• Singing dramatic duets in your common rooms, to the amusement of others
• Always laughing
• Or smiling
• Whenever one of you is feeling down, the other knows exactly how to make things better
• Whether that be a long talk, food or cuddles
• Being the most important person in each other’s lives
• Meeting at King Cross Station every year
• Sitting with each other on the Hogwarts Express, though people sometimes stare
• Teaching first years the importance of inter-house friendships
• And showing that Slytherins and Hufflepuffs can be friends
• Because despite their differences
• Ultimately they’re better together

Straight up one of the worst things about capitalism is just the effect that having to work so much has on our ability to maintain relationships. Relationships all take work, and it is sometimes hard work, but part of that work just includes making a space of time wherein you can just talk to or hang out with someone. Any given week there are a good 10 people I want to see, or call, or something, and I just can’t hang out with everyone in a week. I sometimes feel quite worried about one friend feeling alienated because I’ve seen another, whose schedule matches mine better, or talked to another, etc. For now this is why it is so important to just periodically remind people that you love or miss them. But that’s so hard! If I had one more day off per week, all of my relationships would be much, much stronger. This is an important part of alientation. The older I get, the more I work, the more I understand that. It’s hard! I love my friends and it’s hard to show all of them.

Goth and Identity

So its been a while since i last blogged about goth, but sure enough i have discovered something within the subculture that has again left me torn between multiple sides. I’m talking about issues pertaining to identity. Identity is something very personal to each and every individual and it seems that a lot of people are again choosing sides when it comes to identity and how goths identify with the subculture.

Today i want to discuss these sides and where i stand between them. I also want to discuss some of the good and bad of having each of these minds sets about identity.

To begin, i want to discuss the goths who try too hard. So you’re one of us who really enjoys and cares about the subculture. You love the music, you also might be really into the fashion and it shows. But sometimes you might go overboard. I’m talking about the goths who get so caught up in being goth and proving just how goth they are that they almost miss the point of it. They let goth dictate their lives so much that they sometimes suppress parts of themselves that they feel make them less goth. This is not a good way to be. Of course there are goths out there that naturally love goth so much that it seems like they go out of their way to express it, and that’s fine. Its the goths that force themselves into tiny boxes and actually go out of their way to express it who are in trouble.

Say for instance you like goth music but Bauhaus isn’t really your taste, but you feel pressure to listen to them and make yourself like them because you think that it will make you more goth or that other goths will dislike you if you don’t. This is toxic and the only one you’re hurting is you. You don’t need to like every goth band just like you don’t need to backcomb your hair or wear authentic winklepickers to be goth. This is where people let goth get in the way of their own identities. Sure in order to be goth, you should probably know certain bands and care about the subculture, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop watching Steven Universe or throw away all your unicorn plushies just because those things aren’t stereotypically goth.

Goth is a label for people to identify with. Its not meant to rule your entire life. Ive said it before and I’ll say it again goths don’t like the things they like because they’re goth, they are goth because they naturally like those things. This does not mean you have to abandon all the other things you like just because those other things aren’t goth, this also means that you don’t have to like every aspect of the subculture to be a part of it.

Now moving on to another side of the subculture that has sort of a different way of looking at goth and identity, I’m going to call these people the “Goth is Goth type” These are the goths who believe that goth is simply a one word label and that substyles of goth are pointless or negative.

Now if you’ve been in the subculture for a while you probably already know that goth has multiple substyles and these substyles didn’t really start popping up until after the 80′s. Before then there was just goth and all it took to be goth was listening to goth music. So its understandable that most of these “Goth is Goth types” are elder goths who were around before goth started breaking off into substyles.

Many of these “Goth is Goth types” argue that substyles are nothing more than superficial fashion genres and that substyles automatically restrict you to a little box. What they mean when they say “goth is goth” is that it doesn’t matter how you dress, if you’re goth you’re goth and you shouldn’t let a substyle get in the way and dictate how you should express yourself through goth. And to an extent, i do understand this. I do understand where these goths are coming from. But i don’t think these goths are really taking the time to analyze it even further.

There are goths out there that dress in multiple substyles but there are goths out there that dress in only one or two. And some of these goths dress in a particular style, not simply for superficial reasons but because that style actually reflects their own identity. For example, there are some goths who call themselves Victorian goths and dress in nothing but Victorian goth fashion. Many of these goths actually have interests rooted in the Victorian era. Their favorite past times might be visiting Victorian themed exhibits at the museum and having Victorian inspired tea parties. So for them, Victorian goth just best reflects their personal tastes and identities. So you might think that by telling a goth that they shouldn’t limit themselves to identifying with a particular style is helping them to better express their identities, but it’s actually doing the opposite. For many goths, it’s more than just a substyle, it’s almost it’s own mini subculture that people can identify with that’s still a part of goth.

Not everyone feels like they need to put themselves into boxes or identify with one thing in particular but some do. Some take comfort in it. Lets also not forget that not every goth is neurotypical. Some goths may have mental illness and some may take comfort in compartmentalizing things. It might help them to break goth down into substyles and put them into neat little boxes that they can identify with.

Also breaking goth down into even smaller subgroups within the subculture is not always a bad thing. Some goths may argue that having subgroups is negative because some goths are only befriending other goths of a particular substyle instead of making friends with goths of all types and this is true to an extent. It is very important that we put certain differences aside and make friends with all goths, BUT sometimes its just easier and less stressful to make friends with goths that dress like you. Why? Because you already know that you probably have more than one thing in common. Sure it would be great if a romantic goth made friends with a cyber goth but if their tastes are totally different then they may have trouble attending clubs together or hanging out because their hobbies and music tastes just clash too much.

So for the most part how goths identify with the subculture really is subjective and not as black and white as some goths like to think. Whether you choose to dress goth, listen to every goth band or experiment with substyles, its important to respect everyone and create a balance so you aren’t letting goth dictate who you are. Its okay to care about goth and express it in every way possible but only if that’s what you really want to do and you aren’t sacrificing other parts of yourself to do it. Its also okay to enjoy non goth things and express yourself through specific substyles that you enjoy. Yes, you should make friends with goths of all types but its important to remember that you choose your friends and if you are more comfortable with making goth friends who dress and act similar to you that’s fine, the only one who should have a say on the friends you make is you.

The bottom line is everyone identifies with goth a little differently and that’s okay as long as you respect others and don’t let it change who you are. Don’t let goth or anyone in the subculture dictate your life or how you choose to express yourself. Self identity is important and you should never let goth change it.

so someone asked me, “why did we not see the balloon squad pray?”

2 reasons.

1. maybe they’re not as religious as sana is - which is okay. we don’t all, always, pray our salah. sometimes we miss it because of cirumstances, whilst some people simply don’t pray that much, and that’s okay! each muslim’s islam is personal to themselves, we must therefore not judge.

2. and i think this is probably a bigger reason why: because sana is the main, and we, right now, are living as though we are the main. we are sana. sana is us. and so, i think it was only right, that the first time the salah is shown to be prayed on the show, that it be shown by having sana pray only, so that we as viewers can understand the magnitude of how sacred the salah is. so that we can understand how much meaning, and value it holds. so that we can understand that “oh, okay, so before salah, you have to find a bathroom to perform wudhu, and then you have to make sure after your wudhu, that you remain in a clean state, and then we have to find a room and locate the direction of the qiblah (the direction of the ka’abah in makkah) and then we have to make sure we shift our entire focus, from the world, to solely on Allah, and then we can start praying.”

julie wanted us to feel the weight of this moment firsthand, as a outer body experience, so that it would remain resonated within us. if we had the boys join in, our focus would be less on sana, and more on the boys - which is wrong, because in salah, the focus should be only on Allah alone, because we are establishing a direct one to one communication with him, and all our thought should be on that.

and now that we’ve felt that, through sana, we can understand the magnitude of the salah. so now, when indeed, if we do see the boys pray together, then we’ll understand how much the salah means to them through sana’s eyes, because we’ve felt it firsthand within the 1st episode, through this clip.

So I started watching 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. I remember reading this book when I was in my teens, probably around the age 15. The first and only time I ever read it, I “enjoyed” it. Well, as much as you can enjoy a book about teenage suicide. It’s been 10 years and I still find it to be an important book, if not a bit draggy and filled with teen angst and melodrama. I was a bit disappointed to see a few reviews for the show that completely missed the point. Sure, it might drag a bit. We all know that book to movie adaptations sometimes (most of the time) miss the mark, so we all go in with lower expectations. And they tend to add or cut off certain scenes that may or may not mean a lot to the plot. But when the journalists writing the articles complain about the amount of teen angst or the fact that Hannah used cassettes instead of something more modern or the usage of 80′s music or other trivial. The point of 13 Reasons Why is to address the fact that a teenage girl killed herself and that there were many reasons why she did so, none of which have anything to do with the minor issues found in the show or book.

Rant over. I get salty when older men who seem to forget what it is like to be a teenage girl in high school.

It was painful sometimes. Sometimes they encouraged me to talk about things that made me cry so hard I couldn’t breath. Sometimes they told me stories about their lives I really wished werent true. Human connection is often painful but so so powerful. And I cannot think of one thing more important than it. But I’ve never been one to stick with what’s comfortable so I moved away from my lovely community to a small mountain town. I have met people and I have built relationships. Something is missing. Is it the obsession with their phones? The obsession with their outdoor recreation and showing off how much they do and see? Am I shutting myself off? I truly don’t know. But I have been asked “what hikes have you been on?” more than I have been asked genuinely how I am adjusting to a new life. I get that superficial conversation is less time and mentally consuming. But this has become the loneliest feeling.

Please be mindful of others. Listen to them. Ask them questions about their life. Don’t zone out the second they start telling a story. Don’t fucking look at your phone when you’re suppose to be having a conversation. Make eye contact. Follow up! Be the one who is always asking to hang out. Ask a new coworker how they are adjusting to the job. Get to know your friends depression. Don’t try to make yourself seem better or more experienced. And do NOT be afraid of asking people questions you think will be hard/emotional for them to answer. People appreciate other people’s care. Be a safe space.

watching skyeward in the framework is just….the most frustrating thing because WE COULD HAVE HAD THIS we could have had this in real life if the writers weren’t so hellbent on fucking up grant ward’s character six ways to sunday

the way he hovered over her shoulder! the way she told him to stop mouth breathing on her! the way she grabbed him and then kissed him on the cheek as a cover to slip him that paper! the way she sacrificed herself so he could get the intel to simmons! the way he said he’d die for her!!

this is the ship that i wanted and yeah, i guess it’s better late than never that we are getting it now even if it’s all fake, but it also feels like an epically cruel level of trolling from the writers, like, we could’ve made him this interesting from season 1 but we chose not to because we thought it would be a better story if he were a nazi and then an alien husk and then dead! but hey, look at what could have been, isn’t that fun?

and maybe i’m missing something major but what the fuck was fitz’s biggest regret that he ended up madame hydra’s fuckboy and became a sociopath? how did that happen? how does not being with simmons erase all the good that was in him? it’s such a cheap trope that i hate, that a man is only good because a woman made him that way, that he becomes a monster wehen he loses the love of his life. no, leo fitz has always been good because that’s who he is - he didn’t need jemma for that. they made each other better by bringing out the best in what was already in the other.

and maybe i’m still missing something major but may NOT killing a little girl leads to may becoming a stone cold nazi?? may showing humanity leads to may not having any humanity?? may not killing the girl and therefore NOT following orders leads to may blindly following any and all orders? what am i missing?? how does that logically make sense??

just fucking throw me in the framework so i can see what my life would’ve been like if i’d never watched this show. it’s not like i hate it, i mean, imma still watch it….it’s just so….frustrating sometimes because i think it could be so much better than it is! the female characters are fucking AMAZING and the action sequences are really really well done but man idk maybe i don’t pay close enough attention but sometimes it just does NOT make sense and i will be forever salty over its treatment of grant ward not because he was a hero but because he had so much potential to be a full on villain or an anti-hero or to have a redemption arc and they squandered all of that

but uh great work with framework phil he’s adorable can we keep him please

I’ve just got to say that I’m really appreciative that Andromeda gave us so many male characters that really just aren’t afraid of their emotions. I think in sci-fi epics, it’s easy to fall into the trap of “big macho space men who shoot things woo!”, and here, that’s not so much the case. Lots of them have that aspect, but they also have sides to themselves that are very in tune with their emotions and aren’t necessarily afraid to show it.

Jaal is definitely the most obvious, as all Angara are very in touch with their emotions, and he isn’t ashamed of his feelings or if he’s vulnerable in front of other people. Liam will admit that he sometimes cries because he misses his mom, and will react when things go wrong in kind of knee-jerk emotional ways, and isn’t necessarily embarrassed by those reactions. Drack is a big gruff Krogan who just really fricken loves his granddaughter and talks about how she gave him reason to live, and sends Ryder pictures of shotguns to show sympathy, not tell them “eh suck it up”.

I think Bioware did a good job of introducing openly introspective and emotional characters like Kaidan and Thane in the OT, but they definitely expanded this time around, and I just find it to be a nice change and can really appreciate it.

What’s that saying?
The show’s gotta go all over the place… or something? (insp.)

To Cure Longing (M)

Warnings: Smut. Mention of Dom.

You bundled the comforter tighter around your body, cheek pressed into your pillow as you stared at the glowing red numbers of the clock beside your bed. It was just after 11pm now, which meant that Hoseok and the rest of the boys were more than likely still busy practicing the routine for their latest song promotions.

For the last three days straight, Hoseok had been staying at the dorm and although you really should be used to time apart by now, you couldn’t help but miss having him next to you. You thought that getting to bed early would help, you could sleep away the time and then before you knew it, he would be back with you again. You underestimated how difficult it would be for you to fall asleep though, not when your mind was reeling with thoughts of your boyfriend. Especially when tomorrow was his birthday and you weren’t even certain if you’d get to spend the day together.

You threw the blankets off of you with a discontented sigh, rolling onto your back and staring up at the blackness that would normally be your ceiling. Your hands slid flat over the sheets, craving against all odds and reason to feel your fingertips brush against Hoseok. You missed his warmth, being able to curl tightly against him, his arms somehow just knowing to tighten around you even in the deepest of sleeps. You missed him waking you up at any hour of the night, feathery light kisses against your shoulders and arms pulling you from your sleep, followed by hushed whispers of why exactly he woke you up and how you could fix it.

You pinched the sheets between your fingers, rolling and tugging at the fabric as an overwhelming feeling of longing washed over you. You needed Hoseok and you needed him now. You rolled to your side again, pushing yourself up into a sitting position, your feet hanging off the edge of the bed. Hoseok was still in the studio, you were certain of it. Even if the rest of the boys had gone back to the dorm to rest, you knew that he would be doing his best to perfect each and every step. That gave you the perfect opportunity to leave a surprise that would be waiting for him when he did finally finish.

You bit your bottom lip as a smile stretched across your mouth, hands already tugging your camisole over your head as you stood up. With an outstretched hand, you blindly reached down in the dark, fingers stretching out until they met with the cool metal of your bedside lamp, sliding up the base to push in the switch and flood your bedroom with a dim light. With an easy push to the waistband of your sleep shorts, they fell to the floor and you stepped out of them as you made your way to the dresser that you and Hoseok shared. You knew exactly what you were looking for. You pulled open the second last drawer, and surely enough, hidden partially under a couple of t-shirts, was Hoseok’s favourite white tank top.

He wouldn’t mind if you borrowed it.

You hugged the material to your chest for a second, inhaling the faint smell of your boyfriend that for the most part was concealed with laundry soap. After you pulled the shirt over your head, you analyzed yourself in the large mirror that sat atop your dresser. It looked exactly the way you pictured it would on you. The material was thin enough that it left barely anything to the imagination–not that Hoseok really needed to imagine–and the holes for the arms were cut low enough that if you positioned yourself just the right way, you could get a good glimpse of the swell of your breasts from the side. A hand smoothed down your stomach, pulling the hem of the shirt down as low as it would go, which wasn’t even low enough to cover your butt entirely.

With quick, eager steps, you retrieved your phone from your bedside table, unlocking it and tapping the camera icon. This was the most exciting part; possibilities of different positions flashed through your mind. You wanted the best reaction possible out of your Hobi. You wanted him to know how much you missed him. You crawled onto the bed, sitting back on your haunches. With the help of the height of the mattress, you could get a full view of yourself in the large, dresser mirror. Pulling the shirt down once more and adjusting yourself, keeping your arms out of the way, you snapped a picture of yourself from the side.

It came out perfectly, the hem of the armhole stopped just before the darker colour of your nipple was exposed. You sent it to Hoseok, adding a short message of, ‘I miss you, baby.’ , followed by a heart. You weren’t expecting a rapid response, and you didn’t get one. Which was fine with you, because it gave you the opportunity to take some more pictures. Lying on your back, you held your phone above you, snapping another picture of yourself with the hem of Hobi’s shirt tucked between your thighs to keep from exposing too much too soon.

After you sent it, you were typing another message, in the middle of telling him how you couldn’t wait to see him again. The appearance of three grey dots popping up stopped your thumbs instantly, excitement pulling your mouth into a grin. The white bubble popped up, and you read his text with eager eyes;

[My Hope 11:24pm]:
What do you think you’re doing, miss?

I like the idea that when I’m old I can fill up a whole room with really nice things that people said to me. [Selects random letter] You see every letter has this kind of sense of knowing about me, or a desire for me to know that they know. Or that they’re looking out for me. ‘Dear Matty, I know you’re tired, probably stressed out and you miss your family, but just so you know your fans love and care for you so much. I’d love to show you my tattoo that says ‘LOVE’ from when you signed my autograph book in Austin in May. It means more to me than anything and gets me through so much.’ I feel guilty sometimes that I don’t know them—that if I’m sweet, and I’ve just smoked a zoot, and I’m playing PlayStation, maybe someone’s thinking about me. I have these two realities.

STUFF I LOVED (EVEN IF IT MIGHT HAVE MADE ME CRY) IN SUPERGIRL 219 – a list i made myself

  • “those firsts that you talked about? i want to have them all with you. i never want to stop having firsts with you.”
    • okay yes also the i love yous, but damn that was a good line.
    • i don’t even have the words, i’m a pile of mush.
    • as creepy as it was that that guy was watching them, and manipulating the fuck out of maggie, he really did nail that maggie’s heart eyes can be seen from space.
    • alex wants to name a dog gertrude. okay girl, you almost died so you get a free pass.
    • J’ONN HAS THREE DAUGHTERS NOW, AND HE’S PRETTY HAPPY ABOUT THAT.
    • floriana was clearly sick the weeks they filmed this, and her sick little voice just made everything hurt.
    • I AM A PILE OF MUSH 😘
  • “i’m listening for her. i can’t hear anything. i can do all these incredible things but i can’t punch my way out of this or fly fast enough and turn back time. and i’m afraid that i’m going to lose the person that’s most important to me.”
    • this was, man. dreamy sigh. almost* perfect. when this show is good it’s just so very good, and this line reads cheesy on the page, but melissa nailed it to the wall like the 2x4 that it is. kara is at her best when she’s an observer of humanity. that’s always been true.*
    • “to us, kara.”
      • this, all on its own, was enough to draw out how single minded to the point of selfishness kara sometimes is, but how easily she can be pulled back from that. this entire scene was masterful and reminded me how much i love and miss kara and j’onn together.
  • “what?! no, get in here.”
    • ENDED SO GOOD, STARTED SO BAD.*
    • one day kara and maggie will realise that they’re so incredibly alike, and alex is going to be in big trouble.
      • kara punches first, and if that doesn’t work she uses her words. (she should probably at some point for real learn not to do that.) maggie uses her words, and if they don’t work then she busts people out of prison or sends her gf off to her possible death. (this is not actually a good thing either!) honestly.
  • “and just in time for dinner.”
    • ALEX CAN’T COOK.
    • kara danvers endorses pineapple on pizza because she understands what is good about this planet.
      • kara’s dinnertime cardigan: CONTENDER #1 FOR OUTFIT OF THE EPISODE.
    • NO ONE ASKED FOR YOUR OPINION, MON-EL.
    • that guy was clearly into teenage alex and probably still was, and yet they 100% resisted the temptation to make him a homophobe and honestly THANK YOU.
    • will gregg henry ever be anyone but russell fabray to me? i guess we’ll have to check in again in another five years.
    • who knows that kara danvers is supergirl? “the DEO.” oh, kara, honey.
      • (oh for there to have been a, “and maybe cat, but…?”)
    • IS IT TIME TO TALK ABOUT LENA NOW?
      • IT’S TIME TO TALK ABOUT LENA NOW.
      • THE ALIEN DETECTION DEVICE RETURNS! AND IT WORKS.
        • (i’m never letting this thing go. i demand explanations. i must be furnished with enough informations to be able to make an actual call on where lena luthor stands on what constitutes the fundamental rights of an individual.)
      • that was a date lena and rhea went on. they can talk about mothers and children all they want, that was a date. a very gay date.
      • (RIP LENA WENT TO PARIS FOR SCHOOL. THE PRICE OF THAT DREAM IS LENA WENT TO SCHOOL JUST A CHARLES RIVER AWAY FROM THE HOME OF THE RED SOX. I’M PRETTY OKAY WITH THAT 😍)
      • lena knew rhea was an alien after a single slip that would not be out of place amongst lesbians over the age of 40. either lena is a terrible baby gay or she knows kara is supergirl. there are no other options here, THEY MUST CHOOSE ONE.
      • i’m 500% spoiled for where this plot is going, and after this episode I REMAIN EXCITED.
      • kara and lena call each other on the telephone to talk to each other with words from their mouths. according to the laws of communication between peers under the age of 30, they’re married now. marrieds who go on brunch dates that sometimes involve kale and sometimes do not.
  • *with a few season-long tweaks this episode could have been perfect.
    • because up to the water’s edge (PUN INTENDED) it was. at the very least it was the best episode this season, and it was the rest of the season that let it down.
    • it could have (should have) been the culmination of kara losing her job, losing her sister, losing herself in being the public perception of supergirl. their misstep was not laying the groundwork and expecting two key pieces of backstory to simply be accepted.
      • the supergirl defence? okay???
      • maggie not being 100% team supergirl? okay????????
    • if only they had used kara’s period of funemployment to actually have kara leaning into a life of only being supergirl, instead of setting that up and then never following through. if only they’d actually ever shown her alienating herself from the people she protects, because tbh this whole supergirl defence thing sounds like it should have been a multi-episode arc all on its own, and one that i really would enjoy the heck out of. if only for one second before this episode they had shown maggie to have any kind of disagreement with kara’s superheroing. (context didn’t make this disagreement any more tolerable to me. in fact the concocted backstory made it worse because they had the chance to show it and then never did. so instead, much like it did to kara, maggie blurting this shit out seemed to come out of nowhere, and just made it seem like she was pissed off that she didn’t get to save the day. maggie sawyer’s one true characteristic is being a communicator. that is literally her whole thing this episode again. that shit is her jam. but it’s also kara’s. supergirl talks people down in the end far more than she punches their lights out. kara is a reporter. kara is a person who uses her words, just like maggie. not laying the groundwork here did both maggie and kara a huge disservice.) if only kara hadn’t been absent from so much of the plot all season that these threads were there to pull together ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    • (this could honestly have been a season finale. but that would have made me actually worry for alex’s safety and tbh i’m very glad not to have had to live through that. #LESBIANLIVES.)
  • i could have gone my whole life without watching alex slice her own arm open to pull that tracker out. alas, i will not get to live that life anymore.

I’m watching The Great British Baking Show on Netflix, and it’s so hilarious to me, as an American, to have the judges being all SERIOUS DOUBTS over the flavor combination of peanut butter, grape jelly, and chocolate. I mean like… I get that peanut butter and jelly is not really a thing outside the US, but it’s such a STAPLE here. To me it’s like, of COURSE peanut butter and jelly is good. It’s a no-brainer. You know this from the time you are THREE. And peanut butter and chocolate, too. One of things I miss the most on a low carb diet is being able to just buy a container of peanut butter chocolate ice cream and go to town on it. I miss it so much. And sometimes I miss bread JUST for the ability to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich whenever I want. On any American cooking show, the judges would just nod knowingly at this concept.

So yeah, wasn’t surprised when they ended up liking the flavors in the final product, even though that contestant went home for other issues.

Being a top student at university

This post is based on my (and my friends) experience (second year student; sophomore).

I haven’t double-checked it, so I suppose there would be some mistakes. I miss articles all the time, sorry.

1. First year is the most important

Show your professors your capabilities. Let professors get to know you, their opinion will be significant later. Slog your guts out, get the best marks, show them you really care and you are intrigued in what they say. Later on if the next year/term is tougher or you are be able to fully focus on your education, professors will look kindly on you, they won’t be so strict, so your marks won’t be much lower.

2. Luck

Believe me, we are not always fully prepared. Sometimes our knowledge is incomplete because we don’t had enough time to learn, the topic XYZ is so shitty that we simply don’t get part of it. It happens that we have to count on our luck. The final test is coming in a few hours and you still know nothing about ABC or XYZ. You don’t have enough time and you know you won’t get it in half of an hour. Fuck this, fuck that – you hope you will be able to answer a questions. You’ve got nothing to lose, joke that it would be nice, if you got a question about QWE. If the professor knows you, remembers you and is aware of your knowledge, there is a huge possibility you’ll get this question.

3. Talk to people before your final exams

It’s partly connected with “Luck”. Talk to people who already had their finals (not only to your peers but also to older students). It’s not about questions, because you won’t get the same ones, that’s for sure. It’s more about getting to know the professor’s way of thinking, asking questions, choosing topics. Ask people how much you need to write/say in order to get a good mark. Ask people what topics are professor’s favourite, what do you need to know, how to impress them. Mark down what questions did your friends/other students get – learn them if you know that this professor likes to ask the same thing, pay less attention if you know they like to change them. But never left them aside, you have to know at least part of the answer to be save.

A Letter to the Sherlock Fandom

You may think that this is a lot of text and too long to read but I implore you to try so that you can better understand these points of view.

I apologise if this isn’t as eloquent or measured as I intended it to be but I am honestly so angry at the Sherlock fandom right now. Not all, obviously, many are conducting themselves amazingly no matter their opinion on the episode. However, there are a large (and loud) number who are not and not only are these people making the rest of us look bad and acting as if they speak for the fandom as a whole, I fear that they are doing (and may have already succeeded in doing) irreparable damage to what could have been a great community.

There are several points I wish to address in this post so I will try to dissect each one individually to the best of the ability.

Harassment

No matter what you thought of the episode it is NOT okay, or even productive, to harass members of the cast or crew in any way (whether it be through social media, through official complaints (which can actually have further effects on their professional lives also which are definitely not yours to mess with) etc.). It started with Amanda back when season 3 was announced and that was just downright cruel and now it seems the lesson has not been learnt. They have worked hard on this show and even if it did not turn out as you personally expected it or wanted it to you cannot hate them for having a different view of where things should go than you. I have seen many people on Tumblr saying things along the line of ‘it our show anyway we can do what we want and it can be what we want it to be’. No. It is their show, we merely enjoy it - they created it and they have final say on what happens. I for one would not wish to see a world where the fans get to decide what happens as that would only ever cause further divide in communities and result in one section of a fandom having superiority over the others which is already happening in the Sherlock fandom with some Johnlockers/TJLCers.This harassment also extends to the harassment of other member of the fandom - labelling someone as homophobic because they don’t ship a same-sex ship is not only detrimental to the LGBT+ cause it puts up further barriers for the normalisation of non-traditional relationships.

On a similar topic, complaining to the BBC because you didn’t like the episode is not only petty but also counterproductive - these people are not asking for change in doing so they are calling for an end to the show and a witch-hunt in which those who created it are to be mocked in a public sphere. I have seen many people proudly posting images of their complaints and encouraging others to do the same and even petitions to a similar effect and it saddens me that people have become so arrogant in believing that the show is theirs and they were owed more that they would stoop to such levels. You were not owed anything. You didn’t like it, deal with it, move on.

Queerbaiting

I cannot express how much I dislike this term. Sometimes, yes, the teasing of fans with a potentially queer couple is done in an interpretably malicious way. With Sherlock, this is not the case. The cast and crew have said from the start that Johnlock (the main ship brought up in such discussions) was not going to happen. If you missed that and were not aware - fine; but if you knew this and then continued to be upset that it wasn’t happening - that is on you.  It is not queerbaiting if there was never any potential for the relationship in the first place - especially when neither character has been canonically stated to be queer.

Fetishisation of Gay Relationships and the Anti-Straight Trend in the Progressive Community

Wow, that was a long title. I have seen many of the aforementioned complaints to the BBC, petitions and Tumblr posts claiming that by not making a ship such as Johnlock canon they have let down a large portion of the community who are LGBT+ and have not given them the representation they deserve. Whilst representation is good and everyone does deserve to be able to see someone like them on television, as I said before, we have known from the stat that this was not going to happen with these characters. If you didn’t understand that clear message - again, it is on you, not the creators who have always been honest about the future of such a ship. You can be upset that they did not become canon in the same way that you would for any other ship but you cannot claim that you have been robbed of representation, misled in any way or owed better because you were never promised it in the first place.

As for the title of this section, I have seen a common trend in fandom communities towards making canonically straight characters gay, which whilst harmless if not taken to the extreme (as I feel some members of the Johnlock community have) actually highlights a double standard and serious problem that must be addressed. If one were to take a canonically gay character, strip them of their identity and make them straight they would be called homophobic in an instant. However, when it is the other way around, no one complains. Heterosexual is an identity too and to keep classifying it as separate from the others, in a class of its own, is only going to slow down progress and make it harder for true unity to occur. By stating that two characters, one of whom has categorically stated that they are not gay (and of course only one would be enough) have to be gay because of they way they interact (via your personal interpretation - often though tinted lenses) you are not only arguing that two men cannot be simply very good friends without harbouring romantic feelings for each other, you are also denying John of his own self-proclaimed identity.

The Bad Side of TJLC

(The previous paragraph is also relevant to this section and thus again I must state that whilst shipping two characters is fine, outright ignoring their identity and labelling them yourself is not.)

On paper, TJLC (The JohnLock Conspiracy) is not too harmful, you can speculate as much as you want. Where it becomes harmful is where people delve into the realm of delusion. There are many TJLCers who wholeheartedly believe that Johnlock is already canon or has to be canon and it is these people who appear to harbour the strongest negative beliefs about the recent episode and who are doing the most damage to this community.

I have seen countless posts recently along the lines of the following: 'clearly we know more than Moftiss’, 'how could they not see it was so obvious’, etc. Such arrogance as to your own beliefs is extremely harmful to the wider community. You do not know more than the creators of the show, the show is as they intended it to be - anything that you find within the show (with your TJLC-tinted glasses) that supports your predetermined theory is simply you putting two and two together and making five. It was not intended and therefore not symbolic of your beliefs and so your interpretation is no more than that - an interpretation not fact.

Believe it or not, for those of us not in the TJLC community, JohnLock was not obvious - for someone like me, when I first heard of this ship and TJLC I was incredibly surprised because I saw no romantic connection whatsoever - just two friends; and that was all that they were intended by the creators to be. If you were aware of the cast and crews comment of the subject and still deluded yourself into believing that TJLC was true - that was on you. No one else is to blame for your beliefs not lining up with the facts of the show.

Your ship does not rule this fandom and you do not speak for the whole fandom so those of you saying they didn’t give the fandom what they wanted - you are wrong. They didn’t give you what you wanted. You don’t speak for me and you don’t speak for the countless others like me who actually enjoyed the episode and/or are not in any way JohnLock shippers.

Sherlock Holmes and the Delusion of the Fake Episode

For those of you who still believe in some way that the episode was a fake one, that a  new episode will come out and say that it was all a dream etc. Again, you are deluding yourself and this is not healthy and will only lead to disappointment. It is what it is. Failure to accept reality for what it is and move on from there, living in a constant state of denial is a serious problem.

I have so much more to say and honestly not the words to say it without going off onto too much of a tangent right now. I may add continuations (in fact I most likely will once I can formulate sentences again) to this if I think of anything.

I know that one post on Tumblr isn’t going to make a whole lot of difference and the fractures in this community may never heal but I honestly could not hold this in any longer.

You are welcome to ask questions or for clarification on any point made or any point you wish me to address.
