i might love the cast more than the show is that weird

Tom and Lin-Manuel: An Appreciation/Jealous Rant

Every writer has a golden period – a chunk of time when her brain is ripest, when the veins he is tapping are the richest, when the ideas, big and small, spill out over the sides of the bucket instead of having to be patiently collected like drops of rain off a leaf. This is true for songwriters, playwrights, novelists, screenwriters, anyone who writes anything in any genre. Go look at John Hughes’s IMDb page and marvel at his golden period, which I would bookend as 1983-1990. It’s outrageous. He wrote Vacation, Mr. Mom, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and Home Alone in eight years. Eight years?! That’s absurd.

But then look at his next 20 years. You won’t find one movie that is better than the worst one he wrote in those seven years. The vein ran dry. It always does. That’s just the deal.

Tom Petty’s golden period never ended. Or, at least, the silver periods on either side of his golden period were seemingly infinite. No matter where you think he peaked – Full Moon Fever, or Wildflowers, or Damn the Torpedoes – the decades on either side were wonderful. He was great from the moment he released his first album in 1977 to the day he died last month. For forty years he wrote, and wrote, and wrote, and the songs he wrote were good or great or amazing.

Tom Petty wrote “Breakdown” and “American Girl” in 1977. He wrote “You Don’t Know How it Feels” seventeen years later, in 1994. He wrote “You Got Lucky” in 1982, “King’s Highway” in 1992, “The Last DJ” in 2002. He wrote “I Won’t Back Down,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” Free Fallin’,” “Love is a Long Road,” “A Face in the Crowd,” Yer So Bad,” and “The Apartment Song,” and “Depending on You,” all in 1989, and they were all on the same album, and that’s absurd.

He wrote “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” in 1981 and “Big Weekend” in 2006. He wrote every song on Wildflowers – and they are all great – in or around 1994. He wrote fifty other great songs I haven’t named yet, like “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and “Jammin Me.” He wrote great songs you’ve heard a million times, and great songs you’ve maybe never heard, like “Billy the Kid” (1999) and “Walls” (1996) which was buried on the soundtrack to She’s the One.  He took a break from the Heartbreakers and casually released “End of the Line” and “Handle With Care” and “She’s My Baby” with the Traveling Wilburys in 1989-90. He wrote “Refugee” in 1980 and “I Should Have Known It” in 2010. Is there any rock and roll songwriter alive who wrote two songs that good, 30 years apart? (Paul McCartney wrote “Hey Jude” in 1968, and only 12 years later he wrote “Wonderful Christmas Time,” which is so bad it nearly retroactively undid “Hey Jude.”)

He wrote about rock and roll things, like ’62 Cadillacs, getting out of this town, and dancing with Mary Jane. He wrote about love and loss and heartbreak. He wrote legitimately funny jokes, and moribund memories, and personal narratives, and imaginative flights of fancy. One of his characters calls his father his “old man” and it somehow isn’t cheesy. He was from Florida and California and wrote about both of them, and every time I’m on Ventura Boulevard I think of vampires, because the images he wrote are indelible.

Petty didn’t just write songs directed at women, like most rock stars. He wrote about women, and he wrote for women, and he wrote with women. He treated the women in his songs as lovingly and respectfully as he treated the men. He cared about them as much, he spent as much time thinking about them, and he liked them as much, and all of that is rare.

He wrote simply, but not boringly. He made his characters three-dimensional, somehow, in a matter of seconds. There’s a famous (probably apocryphal) story about Hemingway bragging he could write an entire novel in six words, then writing: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” I prefer the 18-word novel Petty wrote as the first verse to “Down South” –

Headed back down south
Gonna see my daddy’s mistress
Gonna buy back her forgiveness
Pay off every witness

When I was working on Parks and Recreation, whenever we needed a song to score an important moment in Leslie Knope’s life, we chose a Tom Petty song. It started with “American Girl,” when her biggest career project came to fruition. It was “Wildflowers” when she said goodbye to her best friend. It was “End of the Line” at the moment the show ended. For the seven seasons of our show, Tom Petty was the writer we trusted to explain how our main character was feeling, because he wrote so much, so well, for so long.

*******

It seems like a joke, Hamilton – a joke in a TV show where one of the characters is a struggling New York actor, and is always dragging his friends to his terrible plays. Like Joey in Friends. There’s an episode of Friends where Joey is in a terrible musical called like Freud!, about Sigmund Freud, and you get to see some of it, and it’s predictably terrible. Freud! the musical is arguably a better idea than Hamilton the musical.

I’m far from the first person to say this – I’m probably somewhere around the millionth person to write about Hamilton, and the maybe 500,000th to make this particular point, but it needs to be said – a hip-hop Broadway musical about the founding fathers is an astoundingly terrible idea. Lin-Manuel Miranda should never have written it. As soon as he started to write it, he should’ve said to himself, “What the fuck am I doing?!” and stopped. And after he got halfway through, he should’ve junked it, gotten really drunk, and moved on with his life, and made his wife and friends swear to never mention the weird six months where he was trying to write a hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton. I literally guarantee you that when Lin-Manuel Miranda first told his friends what he was writing, every one of them reacted with at best a frozen smile, and at worst a horrified recoiling. Some of them might have been outwardly encouraging – “sounds awesome bud! Go get ‘em!” But then later, alone, they would call each other and say What the fuck is he doing?

There is a moment, in Hamilton, when what you are watching overwhelms you. (It’s not the same moment for everyone, but most everyone has one, I suspect.) It’s the moment when the enormity, the complexity, the meaning of it, the entirety of it, overpowers you, and you realize that what you are experiencing is new – new both in your specific life, and new, like, on Earth.  The first time I saw it, that moment was a line in the middle of “Yorktown.” Hamilton sang the line And so the American experiment begins / With my friends all scattered to the winds, and I burst into tears in a way I hadn’t since I was 10 and a baseball went through a guy’s legs in the World Series. Something about how casually he says that – And so the American experiment begins – just settled over me, like a collapsing tent, and this thing I was watching wasn’t in front of me, it was everywhere around me, and it was exhilarating and transformative.

(If I could put this part in a footnote, I would, but I don’t know how to, so: I should mention that I am very far from a musical theater aficionado. I have seen maybe eight musicals in my life. Not only did I not expect to cry, hard, during Hamilton, I did not expect to enjoy it. I saw it like a week after it opened on Broadway, kind of on a whim, knew nothing about it, and the last thing I said to my wife, as the lights went down, was: “We’ll leave at intermission.”)

The second time I saw it, that moment came much earlier (I knew what I was getting into, this time, so I was more ready to be subsumed). It came barely three minutes in, when the entire cast of the show, in a piece of choreography that can best be referred to as “badass,” all walk down to the very front of the stage and stand, shoulder to shoulder, and sing very loudly about how Alexander Hamilton never learned to take his time. The cast has, to this point, trickled on stage, slowly, one by one, telling you Hamilton’s origin story, and then suddenly there they all are, all of them – maybe 20? 50? It seems like 1000? – as close to the audience as they can get, and they are every size and ethnicity and gender, and their voices are loud, and I thought to myself, oh my God, this is a cast of people descended from every nation on Earth, all singing about the foundations of the American experience, and yes I “knew” that, intellectually, but holy shit, now that I see them all, I know it, like in my stomach, I understand it, and what a thing that is.

The third time I saw Hamilton, that moment was during “It’s Quiet Uptown,” when this enormous, sprawling, improbable, otherworldly, multi-ethnic, historical, art tornado presses pause on all of its historical-cultural-ethno-sociological-artistic investigations, and spends four and a half spare minutes with a couple who are grieving an unimaginable tragedy.  Specifically, it was the lines

Forgiveness
Can you imagine?
Forgiveness
Can you imagine?

What a thing to do, for your characters – to give them four and a half minutes in the middle of an enormous, sprawling, historical swirl, to just be sad. What a piece of writing that is.

(Again, should be a footnote, but: as long as I’m talking about writers here, I should point out that if the late Harris Wittels were alive, he would, at this moment, text me and hit me with a “humblebrag” for writing about how I have seen Hamilton three times, and he would be right. Miss you Harris!)

In the hundreds of hours of my life I have spent thinking about Hamilton since I first saw it – far more hours than any other single piece of art I have ever experienced – I have revisited that same thought over and over: he never should’ve written it. It was an absurd thing to do. It took him a year to write the title song, then another year to write the second song, and how did he not give up when two years had gone by and he’d written two songs?  He must’ve known in his heart it needed to be a 50-song, 2 ½-hour enterprise, and he had two songs after two years, and he kept going. How did he keep going? I’ve been trying to write this blog post about two writers I admire for different reasons since the week Tom Petty died, and I’ve almost given up five times.

At this point, the entire musical is that “moment” for me. It’s the whole thing, now – the thing that overwhelms me is the whole thing. The conception of it, the writing of it, the rewriting of it. The music and the motifs and the themes and the threads and the dramatic shape and the characters and their inner lives, and the eagle-eye writer’s view it took to keep all of that in his head, all of it, the whole time. The writing of it. The utterly impossible writing of it.

What if, when Petunia Dursley found a little boy on her front doorstep, she took him in? Not into the cupboard under the stairs, not into a twisted childhood of tarnished worth and neglect–what if she took him in?

Petunia was jealous, selfish and vicious. We will not pretend she wasn’t. She looked at that boy on her doorstep and thought about her Dudders, barely a month older than this boy. She looked at his eyes and her stomach turned over and over. (Severus Snape saved Harry’s life for his eyes. Let’s have Petunia save it despite them).

Let’s tell a story where Petunia Dursley found a baby boy on her doorstep and hated his eyes–she hated them. She took him in and fed him and changed him and got him his shots, and she hated his eyes up until the day she looked at the boy and saw her nephew, not her sister’s shadow. When Harry was two and Vernon Dursley bought Dudley a toy car and Harry a fast food meal with a toy with parts he could choke on Petunia packed her things and got a divorce.

Harry grew up small and skinny, with knobbly knees and the unruly hair he got from his father. He got cornered behind the dumpsters and in the restrooms, got blood on the jumpers Petunia had found, half-price, at the hand-me-down store. He was still chosen last for sports. But Dudley got blood on his sweaters, too, the ones Petunia had found at the hand-me-down store, half price, because that was all a single mother working two secretary jobs could afford for her two boys, even with Vernon’s grudging child support.

They beat Harry for being small and they laughed at Dudley for being big, and slow, and dumb. Students jeered at him and teachers called Dudley out in class, smirked over his backwards letters.

Harry helped him with his homework, snapped out razored wit in classrooms when bullies decided to make Dudley the butt of anything; Harry cornered Dudley in their tiny cramped kitchen and called him smart, and clever, and ‘better ‘n all those jerks anyway’ on the days Dudley believed it least.

Dudley walked Harry to school and back, to his advanced classes and past the dumpsters, and grinned, big and slow and not dumb at all, at anyone who tried to mess with them.

But was that how Petunia got the news? Her husband complained about owls and staring cats all day long and in the morning Petunia found a little tyke on her doorsep. This was how the wizarding world chose to give the awful news to Lily Potter’s big sister: a letter, tucked in beside a baby boy with her sister’s eyes.

There were no Potters left. Petunia was the one who had to arrange the funeral. She had them both buried in Godric’s Hollow. Lily had chosen her world and Petunia wouldn’t steal her from it, not even in death. The wizarding world had gotten her sister killed; they could stand in that cold little wizard town and mourn by the old stone.

(Petunia would curl up with a big mug of hot tea and a little bit of vodka, when her boys were safely asleep, and toast her sister’s vanished ghost. Her nephew called her ‘Tune’ not 'Tuney,’ and it only broke her heart some days.

Before Harry was even three, she would look at his green eyes tracking a flight of geese or blinking mischieviously back at her and she would not think 'you have your mother’s eyes.’

A wise old man had left a little boy on her doorstep with her sister’s eyes. Petunia raised a young man who had eyes of his very own).

Petunia snapped and burnt the eggs at breakfast. She worked too hard and knew all the neighbors’ worst secrets. Her bedtime stories didn’t quite teach the morals growing boys ought to learn: be suspicious, be wary; someone is probably out to get you. You owe no one your kindness. Knowledge is power and let no one know you have it. If you get can get away with it, then the rule is probably meant for breaking.

Harry grew up loved. Petunia still ran when the letters came. This was her nephew, and this world, this letter, these eyes, had killed her sister. When Hagrid came and knocked down the door of some poor roadside motel, Petunia stood in front of both her boys, shaking. When Hagrid offered Harry a squashed birthday cake with big, kind, clumsy hands, he reminded Harry more than anything of his cousin.

His aunt was still shaking but Harry, eleven years and eight minutes old, decided that any world that had people like his big cousin in it couldn’t be all bad. “I want to go,” Harry told his aunt and he promised to come home.

Let’s be real for a second in terms of like where this show is headed with regards to my favorite character (surprise it’s Lance jk no one is surprised)

Recently this tweet happened:

And some people are taking this really well and other people… not so much. Which makes sense since all of us have been like #thirstin for something more for Lance and have been met with a lotta nothing, but I think this tweet is actually a good thing.

So in this recent interview with Kimberly, Josh, and Jeremy, Jeremy basically says what he’s been saying since day 1 that’s been echoed by a lot of the other cast members and crew.

Basically: Lance will step up to the plate and he’ll become more of a leader and take on more responsibility but at the end of the day…

Lance.

Is.

Lance.

And when people ask for more about Lance in terms of his character, you don’t really hear much beyond this, which is exTRemEly frustrating but just hear me out.

It might not be this deep but I think it’d be cool if there’s a reason for the Voltron team being so adamant in the fact that “Lance is Lance.” And he will always be no matter what. This can go one of two ways.

1. Lance is Lance because he will always only be comic relief. 6 seasons of comic relief. That’s him. He’s Lance. A flirt. Cocky. Goofy. Sure he might have some moments like we’ve seen in S1 and S2 but for the most part he’s there to be the team goofball to make everyone laugh (or groan with frustration and annoyance)

Which is shitty and terrible and I will be so angry if this is what goes down but for now let’s move onto the MUCH BETTER option 2.

2. Lance does become a leader (maybe a co-leader? Right hand man? stays the Blue Paladin and just kinda steps up more? whatever) but no matter how tough things get, no matter how worn down the team is, no matter how hopeless the situation seems, Lance can still be Lance. And I don’t just mean he’s able to crack a joke at a tense time to lighten the mood, though that also is a part of it. I mean that he is able to keep a level head and calmly think things through even in chaotic or near impossible situations

That he is always concerned about the well-being of other and is willing to lay down his life for his friends (AKA PEOPLE HE JUST MET)

That he’s also not afraid to call out these friends when he thinks they are making a mistake (there seems to be a running theme with this one…..)

That he’s also appreciative of his friends and pays attention to their needs/wants and their strengths

And that he will always go down swinging

But maybe most importantly, and this is what I hope the Voltron team is trying to get at, Lance will never lose his joy and excitement and happy go-lucky demeanor. This is what makes him the Blue Paladin (and also why I think he would make a great Black Paladin but anyways….). He’s the glue of the team and this means more than just being the comic relief and making ill-timed jokes.

I really love the Lance that is able to start a weird space spore fight or wants to knit sweaters for Arusians. I love the Lance that enjoys doing a crazy dance while explaining their extremely dangerous plan to defeat Zarkon. I love the Lance that has fun coming up with wild ideas about what else could be locked up in Beta Traz. It’s not that he’s not taking his job as a Paladin seriously but rather that he is trying to take this crazy situation in stride as much as possible. We know that he can be worried, insecure, and lonely, but this never stops him from being who he is. He stumbles, loses confidence, regains it, and stands back up again ready to start swinging at the next asshole who decides to come for him and his friends.

Lance is adaptable just like water. He might come in different forms (serious, competitive, caring, homesick, flirtatious, etc) but at the end of the day it’s all of it is a part of who he is. He might need to get better at figuring out the appropriate timing of being leader Lance or flirty Lance, but it’s not like he has to lose the more immature part of him to become a more well-developed character.

So when people say “Lance will always be Lance,” I’m actually pretty fucking thankful. I’ve read some Langst where Lance becomes more “Keith-like” to cope with his insecurities which……. I’m conflicted about. I don’t think he needs to go as far as NOT be him in order for the team to learn to appreciate him more. So I think this affirmation from the staff that Lance will always be himself no matter what makes me believe that he will be what keeps the team together through the difficult and tumultuous times to come. That even despite his clear self-doubt he will be able to put the team and others first and maintain his role as the glue. That he will still manage to grow and change as a Paladin AND maintain the things that make him Lance.

There will be growing pains, of course, (I’m guessing a lot to do with Keith) but just because he’s insecure doesn’t make him weak. Lance doesn’t have to become more serious or stoic in order to be taken more seriously or be more “mature.” Then he wouldn’t be the Lance we know and love. He can withstand the challenges to come and develop as a character without sacrificing these integral parts of himself. He is capable of SO MUCH and I can’t wait for him to unlock the potential that was always there within him and makes him who he is.

Being Tom Holland’s girlfriend wasn’t an easy task, but someone had to do it, right?. Being away from him sucked at the beginning, but ever since last year you had started coming to the recording sets along with him and Harrison, so everything worked great for you guys.

Tom loved having his girlfriend next to him everyday, not worrying about distance ruining their relationship, and the fans and press loved you! Even his castmates, whom Y/n had developed a great friendship with.

Following Tom around his crazy schedule had many negatives, such as being sleep deprived all the time, but it also had it’s perks. You got to tag alone as to many of the press events and conventions, such as today’s D23 expo.

You had come with Tom to the reveal of the Infinity War trailer and people had loved it! All the fans had gone absolutely nuts when they saw it, and wanted to know even more about the upcoming movie.

Right now all the cast was being interviewed in pairs about the movie and their characters. You stepped away, trying to give Tom some space and deciding to gander around.

That was until you heard Tom’s name being called, followed by a series of laughs. As you turned around you realised it was Anthony and Seb, chatting with some interviewer.

“Hey Y/n come here!” Anthony called out for you as he turned around to the girl interviewing them “She will tell you how awful he is, after all; she has to deal with him on a daily basis. Can you imagine that?”

You laughed as you approached them, realising what this was about. They were, once again, roasting your boyfriend’s ass with the press.

It all started a couple.months back, when Anthony called Tom a little asshole, and his beef towards him had only increased ever since, dragging Seb along the way. It was pretty hilarious if they asked you.

“Y/n Seriously, how you do it? How can you stand him all day?”

“Well, why do you think I’m not with him right now? A girl needs her breaks”

The two actors laughed with you, deciding to have some more fun at Tom’s expense.

“Was he annoying you? Have you given him his juice box yet?” Seb asked, looking genuinely concerned, but still using his teasing voice.

“I’m not his nanny! If he wants a juice box he can get it on his own!” You said, trying to look serious and offended before continuing. “Besides that’s Harrison’s job”

This time Anthony, Seb and even the interviewer bursted out laughing at the mention of Tom’s “assistant”.

The interviewer decided to play along with your little teasing toward Tom, joining in the conversation.

“Y/n, you’ve been dating Tom for some time now; how you keep up with his little attitude problem and all the special requests he has?”

“Let me tell you it’s not an easy task, but honestly that why I keep Harrison around, he can keep track of his needs while I enjoy the benefits”

“So that’s it Y/n? You just going to let his best friend take care of his needs?”

“Well, not all his needs if you catch my drift, but any other stuff he can take care off.”

Anthony interrupted the conversation, trying to sound sarcastic about your last comment. He tried looking surprised as he raised both of his eyebrows and stared at the interviewers camera.

“I guess Spider-Boy is a real man now”

“He is, Anthony, but he still acts like a little boy”

“The weirdest thing is” Seb continued, as everyone’s attention focused back at him. “He has this weird personality swings! You can be with Tom the little boy sipping on his juice box, and next thing you know you’re with Thomas the old man who likes his tea without sugar!”

You laughed along saying. “He looks 15, acts like he is 8, but is secretly 64”

You were about to step out of the interview, but Anthony wasn’t done roasting Tom.

“Wait, he likes tea without Sugar?! as if this kid could be any more problematic!”

“Tell me about it” You said as you rolled your eyes, pretending to be annoyed. “ He is a big problem when cooking dinner. He has this weird diet going on and can only have certain stuff”

Seb laughed as he hugged you from besides while he said. “That’s kid is just a huge problem”

The interviewer had noticed how close you seemed to be with the cast, and decided to comment on it.

“I can feel like there is some strong friendship here! How did that happen?”

Anthony decided to answer on the question as he hugged you from the other side, making you look tiny between them both.

“Well, at first when she arrived to the sets we thought she was going to be a huge diva like her boyfriend, however when we finally talked to her she seemed like a pretty chill girl, right Seb?”

“Yeah, after we hanged out the three of us we decided to keep this kiddo around” He said as he ruffled your hair, with a friendly smile.

“Is that so Y/n?” said the interviewer, trying to get as much info as she could.

“Well, also our hatred for Tom brought us even closer.”

“Well, there you have it folks! An inside on what is working and living with Spiderman:Homecoming Star Tom Holland, by not other than Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan and Tom’s lovely girlfriend Y/n Y/ln.”

The interview finally ended, as the interviewer went back to her job and you were left with both boys. You kept on talking about random stuff until you noticed Tom approaching you.

“Oh no! The diva is back!”

Anthony laughed as Tom made a funny face at him, while grabbing your hand. You gave Tom a quick peck before you were interrupted again.

“Hey Thomas, you’ll never believe the great interview we just had! And Y/n joined us! But I guess you’ll just have to wait until later to see it”

Anthony had a devilish grin in his face as he stared at both of them. Seb was trying not to burst out laughing as he looked at Tom. The boy looked at the girl with a questioning and confused look, wondering what that was all about, however dropping it as they were called for pictures with the cast.

“Go Tom, I’ll wait for you over there alright?”

“You’re not getting away without telling me alright?”

Finally Tom turned around and went to join the whole cast for more pictures and interviews.

The rest of the day went by rapidly until it was the end of the day and you went back to the hotel with Tom.You got into your room, hoping to get a good night of sleep, however Tom was not letting things go by.

“Hey babe, what was that interview about?”

“Ummm? What interview?”

“The one Anthony just send me through twitter? The one he mentioned you joined”

You got a little preoccupied at the thought of Tom watching it. Sure, it had all been jokes, but you didn’t want him to get angry or fight about that stupid thing.

“We were just kidding Tom- You know Anthony, he started his beef and I- I might have joined them” You kept playing with your hair and glancing down, getting a little nervous at his reaction.

Tom noticed your behaviour as he seated down, holding you from behind. “I won’t get mad love, I know you were kidding.”

You let out a breath you didn’t knew you were holding before turning around and kissing him, before he pulled back and asked. “Well, can I see the interview?”

You sighed as you let out a nod and Tom pressed on the link. The title read “Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan and Y/n Y/ln trash talk new Marvel Star??. Honestly these sites did anything to get a couple of views.

The interview came up showing the beginning without you, until you finally joined and continued. You watched as Tom laughed at some of the comments, and made some faces at others. It was kind of cute actually.

He finally turned to face you as he raised his left eyebrow at you. Great, you could feel a comment coming your way

“Sooo, I’m a big problem uhh?”

He got close to your face, almost brushing his lips next to yours. His eyes had gotten dark and was staring at you with a hungry look as he moved his hands to your legs, gently stroking them. You decided to tease him a little bit as you looked innocently at him, grabbing him by his neck.

“You can be very problematic”

“I’ll show you how problematic I can really be”

Tom finally closed his eyes and kissed you hard, as he pressed you against the couch. He grabbed your legs and lifted you with him, taking you to the bed and dropping you in it, as he got above yo and removed his shirt, kissing you once again.

Yep. Being Tom Holland’s girlfriend wasn’t easy, but hey, someone had to do it.

anonymous asked:

how do you draw tears?

Hi, Anon! I’ll do my best to walk you through my thought process.

(This post got kinda long, so if you’re not up for reading, here are kawacy’s process breakdown and JaneMere’s Water Drops Tutorial o/)

Tears as seen in real life are…pretty uninteresting, tbh so to make them look more feel-inducing than reality, it helps to exaggerate, especially when it comes to size and contrast

Here are some things I consider when sketching:

I like to keep it to two trickles per eye flowing from the corners to, but by no means is that a rule. To give tears a sense of weight, I draw them as thin streams that gather into large droplets depending on where gravity is taking them.

You might want to push the size even further so that they’re more visible at a distance. Context and mood is also an important thing to consider; as a general guideline, thinner lines imply delicacy while gushing waterfalls are usually more comical. Feel free to let anime/cartoons/comics (etc etc) be your guide, since they can go really heavy on the exaggeration for a wider range of expression. Have some Mako Mankanshoku tears from Kill la Kill as an example!

Awww :’D
I mean
Awww D’:

Anyways, once I have my sketch down, I go ahead and block them out. I’m using a white tinted with blue for color contrast from the warm colors of the skin, but it doesn’t matter that much if you lower the opacity as much as I have. In any case, I don’t want to use my whitest white yet since I’m saving that for shiny highlights.

I then duplicate my block-in, darken the layer, then erase from inside the shapes I made. This is my “line art” of sorts.

Time to shade! Since tears are essentially water, I treat them like gemstones/translucent objects. Similar to shiny materials like metal, there’s a high-contrast transition between light and shadow in both edges and value, but with transparent objects, light passes through them, bounces around, and “gathers” on the side opposite of the surface that’s receiving the light, like so:

Not the most amazing rendering in the world, but I hope it gets my point across x’D

Moving on!

To compensate the loss of detail from zooming out, I use black to amp up the contrast (doubly important since I’m using a pale-skinned person in my example). If that’s too harsh for you, feel free to play around with colors and opacity. (Again with the whole emotional context thing. Adapt to the situation!) You can even use a soft brush or put the shading through a blur filter, but I usually choose to keep the edges hard because again, contrast.

Now for the fun part: highlights! Shine bright like a diamond : DDD

Amping up the contrast some more by breaking out the whites! I suppose you could stop here, but this still isn’t shiny enough for me yet, >:3c

I go over the edges of the tears with white to punctuate how ridiculously shiny they are. I also like to throw in some bright reds/oranges reflecting off the droplets to imply healthy, glowing skin as well as a dash of a cooler color for general environmental lighting. I also added some cast shadows to the tears. Not terribly dark, since light passes through the tears as opposed to being blocked out.

Again, while I am basing my decisions off real-life principles, a lot of these choices are highly stylistic. Whether you’re drawing small, have time constraints or you’re just plain lazy, you can always pick and choose! This is just my current approach, so while you’re free to try out my workflow if you literally have no idea what you’re doing, I do encourage you to experiment to see what appeals you personally.

Hope this helps! Honestly, I’m quite flattered that anyone would ask me how I draw things :’D
If anyone does end up using this guide, poke me and show me what you’ve come up with; I’d love to see :D

wedding bells, eventually ✦ peter parker

summary : peter has big plans for you and him, one day. hopefully.

word count : 1.9k

@radicalstars omg thank u for requesting i loved this !!

One of Peter’s earliest memories, the type of memory that was so grainy and vague you could hardly recall any of it except brief flashes of pictures with no words attached, was attending the wedding of Aunt May to Uncle Ben. He doesn’t remember it quite well, but from the pictures in her wedding photo album, he was the ring bearer and wore a little tux that May says he hated so much that he practically ripped the tie off him without undoing it after the ceremony was completed and it was time for the reception. He wished he could remember it more properly now, not just because it’d be another memory with Uncle Ben residing in it, but because as he grew up he developed an odd sort of fascination with weddings. It wasn’t necessarily because he had an intense desire to marry- though, after meeting you that had certainly changed- it was more because he thought it was a genuinely beautiful ceremony and just seeing two people unite under love that way made his heart actually quite happy. So, when he and May were invited to the wedding of the young couple that lived across the hall from them and thought that Peter and his aunt were the sweetest people ever, he was extremely excited.

So excited, in fact, that he bounded down the hallway less than thirty minutes after receiving the invitation outside the door, despite May telling him not to do that because it might be considered strange, and knocked on their door. He even implored them to allow him a plus one, the plus one being his love that he couldn’t possibly go to a wedding without. Since it was Peter and he had this adorably innocent, genuinely always happy way about him, they agreed almost immediately to his request of bringing you along.

He called you to ask if you could go on his way back to his apartment. He had left in such a hurry that the door was still ajar when he walked in with his phone pressed between his shoulder and his cheek as he pushed the door open and gave May a thumbs up and an enthusiastic smile. “So- so they just like said yes to me right away and I’m really happy about it and now I get to take you to a wedding so, can you come with me? I’d be so so happy if you could but if you can’t-”

May could hear you through the phone interrupting her nephew’s soliloquy loudly- “Peter! Peter, slow down babe, yeah I can come, you just have to give me a minute to answer-” Peter laughs all the way to his room, his phone still balancing precariously there on his shoulder while he carries a plate filled with way too many snacks into his bedroom, bumping the door closed with his heel. May smiles to herself while she returns his attention back to the show playing on the screen of their small television.

He knows it could be seen as impolite by someone who doesn’t know how startlingly  courteous he is a boyfriend, and as a person, but Peter can’t help the low whistle that he performs when you approach him outside his apartment building the day of the wedding that he’s been chattering about on and off for a few weeks now. He giddily jogs over to you, intertwining his fingers through yours and giving a gentle squeeze. He brings your hand up to his lips and kisses your knuckles, pulling them away from his mouth so he can take a deep breath as he gazes at you in all your devastatingly wondrous beauty that sometimes he can’t even begin to comprehend. Overwhelming as it is at times to have an incredible, beautiful person such as yourself be as in love with him as he is with you, Peter counts himself as one of the most fortunate people in the universe.

He opens the car door for you, May already situated in the driver’s seat, and although Peter could ride shotgun if he wanted to since you insisted that you didn’t mind he counter-insists upon sitting beside you in the back. “Y/N, you look so pretty, Peter did you tell say that she looks pretty yet?” Peter casts a glance at May that’s somewhere between whining without actually making a noise and concealed anger, but he’s never really angry at May. He just wanted to be the first one to disclose how particularly gorgeous you appeared today.

“I was going to,” he mumbles as May starts the car. The way you smile at him is that of a shooting star now that he comes to think of it; slowly, mesmerizing, brilliant, blinding. There’s nothing he can do but smile back, though he’s sure his painfully shy- still so shy, after all these months-  curling of the lips is not nearly as enamoring as yours. It is, in your opinion. “You- you look beautiful. You’re gonna outshine the bride.”

You bite your lip at that, doing a little head shake. You twist the ends of your hair around your finger. “Aw, Pete, she’s gonna look stunning, I don’t wanna even think about overshadowing anyone. It’s her day, you know?” Your hand curled around his, you lean forward and press a kiss to his cheek. “But thank you. You’re the best.” His face scrunches up much like a kitten when you kiss his other cheek, too. May has another secretive little smirk on her face as she adjusts her front mirrors, but you act like you don’t notice. You know she’ll tease you endlessly if she realizes that you noticed her watching, so the two of you have an unspoken agreement to never really address these situations save for a small comment about how much she loves you, and loves you with her nephew.

“Well no worries, ‘cause when you’re the bride at our wedding no one will ever even come close to outshining you.” May nearly slams on the breaks of her car just as you look back at Peter with eyes widened. He has a hand out in front of him on top of the headrest of May’s seat, alarmed as he says, “Woah, May, are you all right?” She turns back to you both with an embarrassed shrug before placing both hands on the wheel again. “Weird,” Peter mutters, his arm wrapping around your shoulder. He turns to stare out the window, as if he hadn’t just said what he did. As if you weren’t internally screaming because Peter Parker just admitted that he envisions himself marrying you one day and it scares the hell out of you but also, you’re so thrilled about the fact that the part of him that needs things meticulously planned out far in advanced has included you in his idea of a future? For his sake, for yours, you rest your head on his shoulder and pretend that what he said wasn’t a big deal. You’d talk about it later. Well, if he brought it up again.

Which he would. He was sitting there beside you tapping a rhythm with his foot and wondering if you had heard him, if you were just ignoring him because of embarrassment, if you really hadn’t heard him, or if you had understood what he had said and were no choosing to be silent because your version of a future didn’t include him the way he wanted it to oh so desperately. He kept tapping his foot. He made the decision to say it again later. It couldn’t hurt.

You’re in the middle of the ceremony when he whispers it again, but this time more casually so he can gauge a proper response from you, to see if it frightens you in the way he had been overanalyzing it in his brain. You, him, and May sit somewhere in the middle of the succession of white lawn chairs for the outside ceremony, and Peter’s arm hasn’t left your waist for more than a few seconds at a time to clap respectably at the right times and to stand when the bride came drifting down the aisle. He watches the groom’s lit with happiness face and then he watches your face, more serene but still glowing like usual. He leans in toward your ear as to not disturb other guests. “That’s gonna be me someday,” he whispers, eyes darting back toward the groom. Your hand finds his again.

“I’d expect nothing less,” you reply softly, following the movements of the bride as she takes her place in front of her soon to be husband, her beam so genuine and pure. Peter nods at your response, a bit disappointed before you say, “Who… who do you imagine being the, um, the bride?” You inquire, a note of hesitance in your voice indicating everything Peter needed to know.

You just needed the confirmation, which he was happy to give. “I was thinking you.” He knows it’s awfully rude of him to talk during a ceremony of this manner, but he can’t help it. “If that’s okay, of course. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”

A carefully tucked away bubble of laughter rises up in your throat. You push the incessant thing back down for fear of being considered impolite, and Peter catches a glimpse at that adorable expression you make before you laugh anyway, so it’s almost like he heard the sound despite it not actually being audible. “Peter Parker, I would be honored.” He bounces a little in his seat, because when he’s overly excited it’s downright impossible for him to sit still, and he rests one hand on your cheek as you continue looking forward. He kisses the side of your face quickly then takes his hand and places it back in it’s proper position; gripping yours.

“I know it’s early but,” he pauses so he can listen to the vows being exchanged. It’s his favorite part of a wedding, even if he’s only been to two. Three, counting this one. He thinks about his vows to you would be eighty seven pages long, respectively. There’s no one he could downsize it. When the bride says her last few words, Peter continues, “I really really can’t wait for our wedding. I just know it’s gonna happen. And I’m so ready for it. Not, like, now obviously but you know, in a few years, when we’re still in love and we know more than ever that we have is permanent. I’m ready for that.”

You’re too lovesick to form a proper reply. You’re afraid that if you open your mouth, you’ll start crying. It wouldn’t seem too improper if you did; weddings often left guests teary eyed as they made their way to the reception. Either you’d cry, or you’d let out a loud squeal of joy and hug the life out of this boyfriend of yours that keeps saying the sweetest things to you. He leans further into you, his head tilted to rest against yours. “You’ll look so beautiful up there. More so than you do right now, if that’s even possible.” He sighs wistfully, then places his other hand on your knee reassuringly. When you’re flustered, you have a hard time forming a coherent sentence, so he understands why you’re not saying anything now. You’re saving the sweet words you always deliver for when you’re sitting back in Peter’s room in a few hours in your sweatpants and stretching out on his bed like its your own. “One day?” He looks to you for the confirmation.

You kiss his forehead, your lips lingering there for a second. His eyes close at your touch. “One day, for sure.”

Plot: In an interview the cast of Riverdale is asked what feature of their co-stars is the best.

You were part of the adorable Riverdale cast and you were so happy for that. Everybody loved you and you loved them. Even if you had a crush on KJ, that nobody knew of, except maybe Camila and Lili, you were really good friends and you teased and made each other laugh all the time.

You were about to do an interview about the show and you were putting make-up on. Not much though just the basic. You did take care of your lips though making them pop out and look even more big than they already are.

Everybody was interviewed in pairs, so most of the cast was done except you and Madeleine.

“So ladiess….” said the interviewer. “We are going to play a game. You are going to tell me what is the best feature of each cast member. Let’s start with KJ.”

“Body.” you said maybe too quickly. “Wow! That was fast. It’s not like he doesn’t have other amazing features, like his voice, his laugh, or his adorable personality. It’s just that his body…. I mean come one….You have seen him shirtless!”

Everybody laughed and so did you trying to hide your embarrassment. Why the fuck did I say his body? And why the fuck did I continue talking?

“I have to agree with (Y/N)” said Madeleine.

“What about Cole?”

“Humor” you both said in unison

“Lili.”

“Her dorkiness.”  said Madeleine.

“Her daddyness.” you said.

“Hahaha ehmm…Camila.”

“Oh her dance moves.” you said.

“Her eyebrows.”

“(Y/N)”

“HAIR” said Madeleine.

“Oh thank you!!! Do I answer that too? Or is it too narcissistic?”

“You do.”

“Hmmm I have to say lips. I love my lips.”

“So does KJ it seems.”

“Wait… What?” you asked confused.

“When I asked him about your best feature he said immediatly your lips.”

“Of cource he did.” said Madeleine. “He is kind of a pervert.”

“Okay…” you said and laughed awkwardly. “I told you I do have some great lips.”

“So… Madeleine.”

“HER HAIRRRR. I MEAN LOOK AT THEM THEY ARE PERFECTION”

When you got home you immediatly opened your laptop and watched KJ’s and Cole’s interview.

“Let’s start with (Y/N)”

“Her lips.” said KJ.

“Whoahhh whoahhh dudee!” said Cole with a smirk.

“Is there something you wanna tell us KJ?” said the interviwer raising an eyebrow.

“No no nooo.” said KJ blushing “I mean she has really nice lips. Well  she also has an aodrable laugh, mesmerising smile, great humor and she is gorgeous and-”

“I am gonna stop him before he says she has a great butt. Her laugh is the best one though. I mean you laugh with her laugh and she doesn’t even mind she just keeps laughing.”

“Yeah ehmm definately her lips. I know it sounds weird.”

“Bro you make it sound weird.”

You were laughing and you were shocked. The thought that he might like you back crossed your mind but your thoughts were interupted by the doorbell so you got up to open the door.

“ Keneti James Fitzgerald Apa what are you doing here?” you teased with a “mesmerising” smile.

“So my body, huh? I should have seen it coming. I mean every time I take of my shirt you are like “Well hellooo there”. Plus you are always biting your lips when I am shirtless.” he said with a smile.

You didn’t have time to be embarrassed or blush. You just teased him back.

“You mean my nice lips that can turn into a mesmerising smile? And an adorable laugh?”

“Yeah do you mind me tasting them?” he said coming closer.

“I don’t see why I might mind.” So he did taste them.

“Definately your best feature.”

TV Vet AU
  • Jack ends up working at a pound after his overdose instead of working with kids
  • He just needs a break from the ice
  • Also he feels like animals are easy because they have specific needs and if you meet the needs they love you
  • He loves seeing all the babies and everyone who works there loves seeing him with the babies because tiny animals + hockey giant is super cute
  • He still goes to Samwell and plays for SMH but goes into veterinary studies
  • After graduation he does go the NHL for a while
  • Not like a long career but he’s happy with it
  • And when he finishes he goes back to school and gets a veterinary degree
  • He stays in Providence cause he’s still friends with the team, he’s a lot more mellow than he used to be and can be their friends and not hurt that they’re still playing hockey
  • Anyways somehow a tv station ends up approaching the vet clinic he works at to do a vet show
  • And he’s still kind of famous and not super keen on being on tv
  • But he looks over the proposal and the amount of money and he thinks about the extra vet techs he could hire and how much easier it would be to do after hours stuff with the extra cost
  • (Like yes he has NHL money but honestly he’s donated a lot of it and he’s saving up to try and open another clinic so)
  • So he says yes
  • Meanwhile we have Bitty, who ended up going off to a pastry school and now,  couple years out, has found himself with a little pastry shop in Providence
  • It’s not Boston and he’s not making as much money as he could be elsewhere
  • And the hours are terrible
  • But it’s his place and that’s the most important
  • Anyways he’s awake at weird hours and this vet show is always playing
  • Like always
  • Playing
  • And the opening theme shows the vet out running with his dog?? And he’s shirtless?? What human actually looks like that honestly?
  • Anyways Bitty is mesmerized
  • Bitty also has his own little Bun now
  • The bunny is a pretty good pet for him honestly because if he needs to he can put Bun in her cage, but mostly she is very well behaved and can roam Bitty’s apartment while he’s gone
  • So anyways one night Bitty comes home and realizes Bun is limping
  • And he FREAKS out because he’s been at work all day and has no idea what might have happened
  • He’s been taking her to a local clinic for checkups and he calls them and finds out they have one person there for emergencies
  • So he throws Bun in her travel carrier and bolts
  • Bangs on the door and it opens on the hot tv vet
  • Who Bitty didn’t even think was a real vet because when is reality tv even real??
  • Bitty is in shock
  • “Uh, you called about your pet rabbit?”
  • Bitty focuses, explains what happened (not that he knows much)
  • The vet introduces himself as Jack, invites Bitty back while he looks at Bun
  • Jack is staring in concentration at Bun
  • Which gives Bitty a good chance to stare at Jack
  • After a few tests, Jack concludes that Bun probably jumped off something or landed funny, she has a slight fracture but nothing that won’t heal
  • He gets a little cast on her leg and asks Bitty to leave her there until the next day so he can keep an eye on her just in case
  • Bitty mentions he’s afraid of what might happen when he takes her home because he’s the only one there and out a lot for work
  • At his bakery
  • “Wait do you know Larissa? I think she goes there a lot?”
  • Bitty does in fact know Larissa (well, she had said to call her Lardo) (Bitty is probably going to have to ask about her cute vet friend, get some deets)
  • Jack says Bitty could leave Bun at the clinic for an extra few days to make sure she won’t get into trouble
  • Bitty hates to leave her but decides it’s probably for the best
  • He stops back the next day with pastries and coffee as a thank you
  • But Jack isn’t there because he’s out on a house call
  • Bitty is disappointed but can’t figure out how to stay without looking like a creep
  • Anyways this goes on for a few days
  • Bitty is finally allowed to take Bun home when Jack is sure she can’t hurt herself again
  • Jack goes “uh I left the number on the forms in case you need it again?”
  • Bitty knows the vet number
  • That is decidedly not the vet number
  • Bitty calls later that day just to say hi
  • They end up together, to no one’s surprise
  • Bun stars on the show a few times
  • Even makes it into the theme a few seasons later when Bitty and Jack have moved in together
  • Bitty makes special snacks for people that have to work the late shift
  • Everyone loves it
  • The end
Talks Machina Highlights: Episodes 95/96
  • This week’s Denise message: ominous stylized symbol that reads “FREE”.
  • Laura does the splits before the show starts.
  • Everyone judges Travis for not reading the Dark Tower series.
  • Denise has moved on to a new job (and is indeed a real person, the technical director of the show). Also has her own twitch: twitch.tv/denisebrr!
  • VM appeared to deal 413 damage to the entity. Even Doty’s natural one “appeared to” hit it.
  • Fenthras got exalted! New things: Bramble Shot can be used twice, and the Oracle Shot can be used twice. 1d6 rather than 1d4 lightning damage.
  • Grog lost interest in the Slayer’s Take pretty rapidly because it was pretty unsatisfying. He wanted to fight a dragon or a stone giant.
  • Ashley was excited but a little nervous and feeling the pressure to jump into a Pike arc after being gone for so long.
  • Back in the home game, Travis wrote the longest character backstory of any of them.
  • Brian on what you’re missing by not watching TM: “Travis getting boogers pulled out of his eye by his wife on live television.”
  • Vex really likes Tary as a roomie because Doty did some housekeeping, because he was always ready to talk a lot, and because he made her stuff. Vex is also drawn toward people who have suffered or are outcasts in some way, so once she found out he was outcast from his family, she wanted to protect him.
  • Grog still misses Scanlan, to the point where if Vax pulls a prank on him, he might just let it go instead of jumping gleefully into retaliation.
  • Laura had several chances to find the grey render baby over the year off, and she rolled poorly every time. A lot of them rolled poorly during the prep at Matt’s house.
  • Brian has adopted and expanded on Laura’s dice habits, including the dice jail. Travis: “Or it’s just… dice.” Laura: “NO SOME OF THEM ARE CURSED”
  • Everyone talks about how fangirlish Ashley and Laura would be if Sara Bareilles were on the show. Ashley gets nervous just talking about the time they got to meet her.
  • VM-themed Slayer’s Cake stuff: Profiterollo, Bad News bear claws, sun treats, blondies for Tary, angel food cake, honeyed fun buns, do-you-spice cake. Brian suggests a meat-man pie. Victor’s coffee cake, Kern bread.
  • Grog thinks the Deck of Many Things is actually The Deck of Fucking Awesome Love and Amazing Weapons.
  • Ashley had to roll to have Pike become number 2 in the Crucible!
  • Travis and Ashley both had to roll to teach Grog to read.
  • It took Tary five months to enchant the armor for Vex, working every day. In return, she stuck around with him and kept him company every day. They bonded a lot over that year!
  • Nobody really has any plans to go back to Greyskull. Pike and Grog decide they’re gonna turn it into a treehouse.
  • To Grog, Tary is just sort of there. “I need him to fight more. And better.” He needs to get a cool HDYWTDT.
  • Vex thought Scanlan was right about some things, but believes that his leaving wasn’t justified. Vex is way closer to Tary than she was with Scanlan, but she’d still rather have Scanlan to rely on in battle.
  • Now Pike’s just as tempted as Grog to draw a card from the Deck.
  • Pike’s mom was completely fine with Wilhand leaving with her so that it was one less mouth to feed. The other characters were Matt expanding on Ashley’s overall outline.
  • The twins didn’t have the ability to do big scams (they didn’t have magic!), but they mostly survived by stealing and then selling at the next down over.
  • Ashley thinks Pike feels worse about her family betraying her than she would’ve felt if the curse had been real. Laura points out that if they hadn’t noticed the illusion, the whole thing could’ve played out and they never would’ve known.
  • Travis and Ashley mostly didn’t suspect an illusion until Laura pointed it out; they thought it was gonna be a distraction from the real monster. Laura figured something was weird right when it was cast, and immediately figured it out when nobody could hit it.
  • Ashley was really torn between what she would’ve done in the situation and what Pike would’ve done; she dialed back her anger to keep in-character. Ashley whispered to Travis: “Maybe we should make [Ogden] pick a card.”
  • Grog would’ve been a lot less merciful towards the Trickfoots; nobody messes with Pike on his watch.
  • Vex thinks of Pike’s response to the whole situation as something she’d want to aspire to.

Talks Machine in the Dark:

  • +2 AC on Vex’s dragon-hide armor, automatically has cold resistance, and doesn’t have to be attuned.
  • Travis tries (and fails) his Chewbacca impression.
  • Ashley attempts a Christopher Walken impression. Ashley: “Nope, I lost it.” Brian: “I don’t know if you had it.”
  • Matt buttdialed Brian at Ren Faire and it went to voicemail, so Brian is working on editing and enhancing the four minutes of audio he got from that.
  • Mary Elizabeth McGlynn was the one who married Laura and Travis, and they did a sort of “renewal of vows” at Ren Faire.
  • Grog isn’t really scared of much besides Kevdak.
  • Pike gave her family ~6,000 gold at the end.
  • Cake or pie? Travis: pie. Laura: cake. Ashley: …shit. (She settles on pie.) Brian prefers cake.
  • Someone asks: If Grog had to give up weapons, ale, or Pike, which would he give up? He’d give up ale. Travis didn’t even hesitate.
  • Ashley doesn’t think Pike would’ve turned out like the other Trickfoots if she’d stayed with them. She’d already started to show signs of being different and having experiences as a cleric, which is why Wilhand took her out of there.
  • Ashley and Laura both dream as their characters. Travis doesn’t really dream much. “It’s ‘cause my life is a dream, girl.”
  • Ashley dreams half the group are just themselves and half are their characters in some fantasy setting. Laura sometimes dreams of having the flying dream IRL. Brian had his first D&D dream last night. “I was Vax as fuck. I Jenga’d hard.”
Creating Diversity from Generic White Script

So, I’m taking a screenwriting class, where we’re writing a short film script. I’m writing basically a story about an RA who’s struggling through the stress of like, cyclical catching students misbehaving, writing them up, school etc. My issue is, it’s a script, and something our prof has talked about is how it’s important to actively build diversity into the story to avoid the hollywood ‘Best (white person) For The Role’ which makes a lot of sense, but on the other hand, my story idea is currently… entirely generic, i.e.

I’m at that point where I have to make a decision about whether it would be fruitful to specify the race/ethnicities of certain characters. But my problem is, some of the characters speak very little, and most of them say things basically any student would say in the same situation. Even my main character speaks mostly in a professional context using basic RA lines like ‘hand over your IDs.’

Because it’s a script, it seems really weird to me to say, okay this character is asian, but then there’s no real reason for them to be or not to be, say, black, or latina, or mixed, etc.? At this point, I have to decide moving forward whether to build my characters to incorporate some indicators of specific racial/ethnic background (linguistic quirks, etc.), but I don’t know a) whether I should or not because it seems necessary only because of trying to subvert an all white cast, and b) how I might even go about this, again, seemingly arbitrary process.

So how can I build diversity into a script that’s relatively generic without it feeling arbitrary or canned? Or without specifically indicating race/ethnicity in a context in which it wouldn’t really be addressed outwardly?

[Redacted for readability]

Your professor is correct. It’s time to normalize People of Color in scripts, stories, in all forms of media. White is still very much the default for Hollywood and clearly your script as you struggle to place us just existing without it feeling unnatural or obtrusive.  You question whether it is fruitful to specify race where race won’t be addressed. I say it is. This is exactly what many of us want, just a story where we’re included and treated as human beings doing things, with agency, and not table settings and decorations for white characters to interact with.

It seems unnatural or unnecessary to specify race to you because you’re used to the default being white people who don’t need an introduction of race. It’s time to just stop feeling the need to have to explain our existence and just let us be there. Let us exist.

Why not add cultural and personal details, though? Even in the small ways? Honestly, if people are only speaking in professional terms and doing generic actions void of much emotion and personality, your story may come off as bland and the characters undeveloped and unmemorable. Perhaps I don’t have a full understanding of what you’re doing with this script, though.

The way people speak and the words they say, the way they react to things, it’s all informed by where we come from and who we are. You could show culture with a name, from the lunch they eat, the words they mumble in their native tongue in frustration…and those things come off as much more engaging to me than just White/Generic/Everyman does generic/ professional things.

~Mod Colette

I agree. We’d love stories where we’re the protags, but there isn’t a lot of hullaballoo about our identity. But that doesn’t mean wiping the slate completely.

(I’m thinking of a recent video featuring Martellus Bennett of the NE Patriots and how he actually has a book series with a Black protag going on adventures, and how he talked about the importance of having Black characters having their own stories that weren’t just about their identities.)

-Mod Jess

How to solve your problem: backstory.

Any generic script can be modified to PoC, depending on your definition of “generic.” If by “generic” you mean “ethnically uncoded"— well, you’re wrong. Generic is very ethnically coded. It’s white coded. You just don’t notice it because it’s the same markers in your life. If you watch something like Black-ish or Fresh Off the Boat, you’ll see the differences in ethnic coding in a family suburban sitcom.

If by “generic” you mean “uses archetypes familiar to the genre”, then you’re dealing with a situation where there really genuinely isn’t any race marker. As I mentioned— Black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat are family suburban sitcoms. These are generic plots, made different by asking: what would this ethnic group experience in this context?

You don’t seem to know enough about diverse ethnic groups in order to insert them into the narrative. Black people, for example, tend to dress more professionally than is required. This is because the markers of “casual and cool” for a white person (jeans, t-shirt, sneakers) are seen as “slob and inexperienced” for a black person. There are hundreds of examples like this, if you start looking.

As Colette said: you’re used to the default being white people. All of us are! This is something you have to actively unlearn. But the way to unlearn it is to ask the same questions you do in general character building.

Things like:

- How does this character’s background impact their behaviour?

- How do others see them? (Note- cultural markers like the above dressing professionally example heavily influence this)

- How did their parents push them?

- How do they want to be seen?

In order to build race into your characters, you have to get out of your all-white box and start to understand our perspectives. Just like you learn to write a whole bunch of different white people in writing, learn to write a whole bunch of Black, or Latinx, or East Asian, or South Asian people. We’re all still people, but our experiences have shaped us for who we are— just like white people.
When building characters, you have to ask yourself all of the questions about who they are and how they’re seen in order to write anything good. These are the steps for any character building, so if you’re thinking there’s too much work involved… well, sorry, no, there really isn’t. Not in this industry.

You live and die by your ability to create relatable characters, and in order to do that, you have to build backstory. And in order to build diversity in, you have to learn how to craft a PoC backstories that have just as much nuance and variety as white backstories.

I’ll Help You (Draco Malfoy x Reader)

She’s not eating. Why isn’t she eating?

It’s breakfast in the Great Hall and Draco is sipping his usual cup of tea while he surveys the Gryffindor table. His eyes are locked on [Y/N] [L/N] as he half listens to Pansy nattering on about the latest fashion trends in France or whatnot. He arches an eyebrow when he finally sees you reaching for your spoon but frowns when you make no move to put any food in your mouth.

It’s been going on like this for a while now, you coming down to the feasts only to sit quietly by your friends as you stare off into space. It also frustrates him that he seems to be the only one who has noticed your odd behavior.

“Pansy.” He says suddenly, interrupting her rather animated rant on leather skirts. “Does she look thinner to you?”

Pansy scrunches up her nose in confusion. “Does who look thinner?”

“Her.” Draco gestures in your direction with a piece of toast.

Pansy raises her finely plucked eyebrows at him skeptically but obliges him and regards you thoughtfully. “That’s [L/N], right? She does look a little bit on the light side.” She observed. She then swivels in her seat to look at Draco. “Why has that suddenly piqued your interest?” She asks slyly, a smirk slowly making itself home on her face.

“No reason.” Draco says quickly, making a show of devouring his last piece of toast. “You’d better eat up, class starts soon and I have no intention of waiting for you.”  He tells her, eager to change the subject. Thankfully, Pansy decided not to pursue it instead choosing to continue he earlier rant. When he was sure that her attention was fully diverted, his focus sidled back to you. He really didn’t like this weird clenching feeling in his chest and he resolved to keep a close watch on you for the rest of the day.

The day passed and everything was relatively normal. True to his word, Draco’s attention never strayed from you and by the time lunch finally arrived, he was just about ready to tear his hair out.

Why hasn’t anybody noticed her condition?

You moved around sluggishly as if in a daze. Tiredness was written all over your face but no one so much as voiced their concerns.

“Eat for fucks sake. Eat.” He murmured under his breath. You frowned suddenly as if hearing his thoughts and for a split second, your eyes were locked onto his. The eye contact didn’t last, however, seeing as Draco quickly looked away praying to both things holy and unholy that no one had noticed how his skin had gone an unnatural shade of pink.

Dammit, I’m acting like a blushing maiden.

“Draco, you’re staring.” Pansy commented nonchalantly as she examined her reflection in the back of a spoon.

Draco glared at her halfheartedly. “Of course I’m not, shut up Pansy.”

Pansy merely stuck her tongue out at him in response, then her expression turned weirdly sympathetic. “If it makes you feel better, I have noticed that [L/N] has been acting a little oddly lately. She looked particularly unsteady on her way out of Potions, but then again, it could have been just the ghastly fumes omitting from that place.”

Draco perked up immediately. “Exactly, there’s definitely something going on with her! We just need to figure out w-” He stopped short at the look Pansy was now giving him. “What?”

Pansy just shook her head slowly while turning back to her reflection. “Has it occurred to you that you might be getting a little obsessive, darling?”

Draco spluttered indignantly.”I just think she’s acting a little off! That’s not obsessive, it’s healthy curiosity!” He retorted. “Besides, she’s a Gryffindor. Why would I be obsessive over a Gryffindor?”

Pansy stared off dreamily into space. “It’d be just like that muggle story.” She sighed. “Romeo and Juliet.”

“… Pansy.” He ground out through gritted teeth. “They both die you utter bint.”

“So? I happen to love tragic love stories.”

Draco groaned and didn’t even bother trying to look dignified when he let his head hit the table.

*******

Draco’s worry was starting to wane as nothing out of the ordinary happened to you. Sure, he was still concerned but he figured maybe you had just caught a nasty sickness somewhere.

The incident occurred in the last class which happened to be Defence Against the Dark Arts (of course it was). Everything was going fine until the last half hour of the lesson, when the professor decided to test the students on the new spells they had been taught by organising a short dueling session.

To his chagrin, you got paired up with Theodore Nott, and Draco ended up with Looney Lovegood.

“No need to go easy on me, okay Draco? I can take care of myself.” Luna informed him in her usual dreamy like voice.

Draco caught his sneer in the last moment and instead gave the girl a strained nod before looking back at you. You were starting to look pale again, and are your hands shaking? These are not good signs.

“She doesn’t look good, does she?” Luna’s voice, laced with concern drifted into his ears. He turned to look at her in surprise.

“You noticed? Why haven’t you said anything to her? To her friends?” He snapped harshly.

Luna didn’t so much as flinch. “Why haven’t you said anything?”  She countered.

Draco stared at her in disbelief. “Are you crazy? They’d hex me on the spot if I so much as got within seven paces of them!”

Luna tilted her head slightly to the side as she regarded him. “You’re right. I forgot that they didn’t like you much.” She said finally.

“They hate me, Looney.”

“Hate is a strong word.”

“Yes, that is why I used it funnily enough.”

Saving himself from the conversation, Draco turned away from the Lovegood girl and strode over to stand next to Theodore so that he and Luna could duel side by side to you.

You eyed him curiously up and down but didn’t say anything choosing to send a wicked smirk to Theodore. “Have you ever dueled before, Nott? I wouldn’t want to hurt you.”

Theodore looked taken aback at the jab, but took it in stride. “I would worry more about yourself, princess.” He teased, his tone bordering on flirtatious.

Draco was not okay with that.

Thankfully you seemed to take that as an insult because you expression cooled rapidly. “We’ll see.” You said quietly and without warning, you cast.

Locomotor Mortis.

The Leg-Locker Curse hit Theodore square on the shoulder and he went down less than gracefully. His arms were still free though and he threw his own spell at you.

Confringo!

You didn’t miss a beat. “Protego.” You pointed your wand at a desk. “Oppugno.” It began mercilessly hammering Theodore on the head.

Said person had completely forgotten his wand in favour of using his arms to shield himself from the attacking object, while his legs were still pathetically glued together.

It was very clear who won that round.

“Go [Y/N]!” Luna cheered, clapping enthusiastically.

You gave her a tired smile in return, and that’s when Draco noticed your sudden pallor.

“How did react so quickly? Teach me your techniques!” Lovegood buzzed excitedly, not noticing how you were now swaying slightly.

Draco did notice however and he tensed.

You ran a hand through your hair as you gave Luna a strained smile. “T-there’s not much to teach, really. You’ve just got to mov-”

Thunk.

Draco was by your side in a heartbeat. He tapped your cheek lightly but you didn’t stir.

“Someone get the professor!” He yelled, ignoring the strange looks he was getting from his classmates.

“What’s happening, what have we got? Oh my.” The professor copied Draco’s position and kneeled down beside you. He took your wrist gently and paused for a moment listening to your pulse. Draco hadn’t realised he was stroking your hair but he didn’t stop, imagining that if you were awake, you would have found it comforting.

“Everyone, give Miss [L/N] some space please!” The professor declared. “We need to get her to the Hospital Wing.”

“I’ll do it.” Draco offered immediately. That finally got some reaction.

“Why you, Malfoy?” Weasley spat. “What gives you the right, huh?”

Draco glared at him hatefully. “Maybe because I actually noticed that she’s been feeling off. Unlike you, since you were too busy stuffing your fat face with whatever snacks you can get your filthy hands on!”

“You take that back, Ferret Face!” Weasley drew his wand, his face having gone a very unflattering shade of red that clashed horribly with his hair.

Draco drew his own wand in retaliation and was about ready to throw a hex at the twat but Potter stepped forward.

“Stop it! Stop it both of you! This isn’t going to help [Y/N] and Malfoy’s right, Ron. We weren’t exactly paying attention…” Potter stared shamefully at his feet leaving Draco slightly unnerved that The Boy Who Lived had actually stuck up for him.

“Enough, all of you.” The professor intervened. “I’ll be taking Miss [L/N] to the Hospital Wing. Class dismissed.”

“Professor, may I come with you?” Draco asked hastily, schooling his face into a hopeful expression causing Weasley to snort. Draco paid him no mind and continued to silently beg the professor. “Please sir, we don’t have any more classes anyway…” He pressed.

“All right.” The professor relented. “Come now, we’ve dawdled long enough.”

* * * * * * * * *

Draco never left your side. Not when you were lowered onto the bed. Not when Madame Pomfrey began casting spells on you. Not when she force fed you a potion (he had helped). Especially not when he had been told to leave.

The nurse had given in to his stubbornness and he had been allowed to stay for as long as he wished, on the pretense that he had no classes so that it wouldn’t be a problem.

His hands had somehow gravitated back to your hair and he was still stroking it when you awoke.

“Malfoy?” You inquired a little croakily.

“Y-yes?” He replied a little unsure of himself now that you were actually awake.

You and him weren’t really friends and he figured it was weird for you to be seeing only him right after gaining consciousness.

You sat up slowly and he didn’t stop you, mostly because he was afraid of what your reaction would be if he did. You took in your surroundings with a slight frown marring your features before turning back to look at him.

“What the hell am I doing here?”

“You fainted.” He said firmly, not able to think of any other way to explain it.

“Ah.” You said, stumped.

“Ah.” Draco echoed.

You gave him a weird look. “Why are you here?”

Thrown off guard by your forwardness, Draco frantically searched the recesses of his brain for a good answer. “Madame Pomfrey made me keep watch.” He lied.

You raised an eyebrow. “And you didn’t throw a fit? I’m impressed.” You mused. “I’m awake so you can go now.” You told him but he didn’t move.

“You fainted because you haven’t been sleeping and eating properly, according to Madame Pomfrey.” Draco said in a rush.

A flash of discomfort crossed your face. “Sooo?”

Draco stared at you incredulously. “So, why?!” He questioned.

You folded your arms across your chest and avoided his gaze, fixing your eyes on a bedpost instead. “That is completely none of your business, Malfoy. Why on earth do you care?”

Draco stood his ground. “Why?” He repeated.

“Go away.”

“Tell me.”

“Why?”

“That’s my question.”

“Sod off, Malfoy.”

“Tell me what’s going on.”

“No.”

“Tell. Me.”

No.”

“Please?”

“Oh for Godric’s sake. Fine!”

Draco smirked in triumph while you looked like you’d very much like to punch him. He waited patiently while you gathered your wits about you and let out a breath of frustration.

“It’s nothing drastic….” You began quietly.

Draco nodded slightly to indicate he was listening.

“You know my family, right? Well, they’ve always stuck to the oldest traditions and I recently got a letter from them saying that they had arranged a marriage for me and a boy from the Rincewood family.”

Something sharp twisted in Draco’s gut at that and his throat dried up. “They’re quite prestigious.” He managed.

“I declined.” You said flatly.

There was a pause.

“You… declined.” Draco repeated slowly.

You nodded. “They didn’t take it well and one thing led to another. So they may or may not have disowned me now.” You finished in one breath.

Draco sat back in shock. “They really disowned you?”

“Yup.” You confirmed. “The not eating and sleeping was unintentional on my part. It was just the stress building up.”

You sounded quite detached about it all, resigned even. Your eyes had a glossy sheen to them and it seemed to him that you were trying very hard not to cry.

For some reason, he got a really strong urge to comfort you and before he knew it, his hand had already moved to place itself tentatively on your arm and when you didn’t shake him off, he found your hand and gripped it reassuringly. A voice in the back of his head told him that this was very unlike him but he silenced it.

“They’ll come around eventually.” He said as supportively as he could.

You scoffed and rolled your eyes but your fingers curled around his a little tighter. “You obviously don’t know my parents, Malfoy.”

Draco took a chance and used his free hand to thread his fingers back into your hair again. He couldn’t quite hold back his smile when you relaxed into his touch almost immediately.

“You’re right, I don’t know your parents.” He agreed. “But parents are parents. They can be fuck ups- I mean look at my parents- but at the end of the day, they’ll always love you… in their own twisted way.”

You fell silent for a moment but when you spoke again you sounded hopeful. “You think so?”

“Yeah.” He said, shifting uncomfortably. This comforting business really wasn’t his fort but then the smile you gave him afterwards ruled out any other thought. Damn that was bright.

“Besides,” He continued. “If it doesn’t work out, you could always come stay at the Manor for a while. There’s an empty room next to mine you could- wait- wha- why are you laughing?”

You shrugged helplessly, letting go of his hand to cover your mouth with it. Draco tried very, very hard not to frown but figured he didn’t quite manage it.

“I didn’t really believe Parkinson when she told me you had a crush on me, but now you’re actually asking me to move in with you and I just- “ You dissolved into another fit.

Draco scowled, his face heating up rapidly. “Pansy is a fucking traitor.” He muttered darkly.

You sobered up after a bit and looked at him gratefully. “Thank you, I really appreciate it but this is kind of my problem. I should be the one dealing with it.”

Draco arched an eyebrow and stared pointedly at the hospital bed you were currently on. “And how is that working for you?”

A beat.

“Not good.” You admitted.

Draco sighed and left his chair to sit on the bed next you. “Look, “ He said. “It’s quite clear that it’s out of the bag that I might… fancy you a little bit and you had to find out from Pansy making it downright humiliating on my part. The least you could do is let me help you.”

You narrowed your eyes at him. “You really are a Slytherin, aren’t you?”

“I wonder why the Sorting Hat decided to put me there?”

“Cut the sarcasm, dollop head.”

“That’s not even a word.”

“Sure it is.”

Draco crossed his arms over his chest. “Fine then. Describe dollop head.” [A/N: This is a Merlin reference because I like it and I want to.]

“In two words?”

“If you can.”

“Draco Malfoy.”

“…  Ah. Ha. Ha. Do we have a deal or not?”

Your eyes glinted in mischief. “Only if you can tell me where this phrase is from.”

Draco blinked in confusion. “What phrase?”

You cleared your throat dramatically then fixed him with a mock glare. “My father will hear about this!!”

“… “

“… “

“Do you want to die??”

Being in love with your mortal enemy is only acceptable when you’re under a spell.

Update: In the two and a half months or so since I read Carry On, my Word document of fanfiction is now just under 30,000 words long. … Though now that uni is back I probably won’t be writing as much (that said, I’ll probably think of some great new idea overnight that I can’t wait to start writing). Maybe I should write shorter fics. Anyway, here is 7.5k words of fluff.

Hi!! Do you have any podcast recs? I already listen to wolf 359, the penumbra, once and future nerd, mbmbam, the adventure zone, and the bright sessions ☺️☺️

I mean, you have most of my favorites (SHOUT OUT TO ONCE AND FUTURE NERD), but I also love…

Greater Boston

Magical Realism, with a hint of realistic fiction-ish. It’s “a speculative fiction podcast set in an alt-universe Boston.” It’s charming, it’s funny, it’s heart-wrenching, you’ll hear about the Molasses Flood more than once, what more could you ask for?

EOS 10

Scifi. So take Scrubs or Grey’s Anatomy and put it on a space station. This podcast is hilarious, has some of the coolest sound design ever (make sure to listen with headphones, if you’re able), and generally is a really unique approach to the genre.

ars PARADOXICA

Scifi, time travel, cold war conspiracy, bad-ass woman scientists, all fantastic. Also, basically my first ace representation. If you have heard all of the Bright Sessions, you’ve actually already listened to an episode of ars (The Intrusion). The whole cast is also featured in Wolf 359.

The Strange Case of Starship Iris

Scifi. Think Firefly, but not problematic. This podcast only has a few episodes out but they are all very high quality.

The Infinite Now

Scifi, time travel maybe? unclear. This is possibly the weirdest podcast on this list, and is mainly comprised of shorts, time weirdness, and things like that. It’s very funny and episodes range from 30 seconds to 19 minutes.

Night Vale Presents shows (Welcome to Night Vale, Within the Wires)

Surrealism, radio show, romance. Look, Night Vale is an ancient behemoth. It’s worth listening to, but you’re in for a long haul. It was my first podcast, and I love all the characters, but there is a heckuva lot of it. Give it a shot. (Great podcast for falling asleep to, but you might get a little freaked.)

Within the Wires is another podcast from Night Vale presents, and it is also quite good. The first season is presented as meditation tapes, and as you figure out more about the world it’s really cool.

We’re Alive: A Story of (Zombie) Survival

This is the only horror podcast that I listen to. It’s a zombie apocalypse that focuses more on human issues of survival than zombies and it’s really good. This show uses music super effectively (it’s also one of the straightest podcasts out there, and very long, but worth it).

Non-fiction podcasts that I also really like:

Wonderful!

My favorite non-TAZ McElroy product. This show is just Griffin being soft and cute with his wife, Rachel, for an hour or so a week, i fucking LOVE it. They talk about things they love as I try not to cry.

Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine

It’s Justin’s show! I like this one too. He and his wife Sydnee talk about medical history, but it’s funny? Listen to the episode on Hysteria to see if this podcast is for you.

Dear Hank and John

Look, their intro says it all: “It’s a comedy podcast about death where me [Hank] and my brother John answer your questions and bring you the news about Mars and AFC Wimbledon.” Really good for driving cause it’s not distracting. Think MBMBAM but more thoughtful and they actually try and answer the questions.

Timelapse

From the folks at ars PARADOXICA, here’s a show all about time-travel in media. It’s a ton of fun.

Honorary Mentions:

What’s the Frequency (psychedelic noir)

Station to Station (??? mystery??? science?? time weirdness?? unclear)

The McElroy Brothers WILL Be in Trolls 2 (comedy)

Imaginary Worlds (reporting on fiction)

36 Questions (musical podcast!!!)

The Bridge (weirdness on a bridge) (the bridge is across the atlantic ocean)

What Your Fave BNHA Character Says About You:

I got quite some asks a while ago about “What does my fave say about me???” and I wanna answer all of them and also no new chapter which is crushing:

Class 1-A: Alphabetized

Aoyama Yuuga: you have horrible self-esteem issues and cover it up by attracting attention to yourself because you want the attention but have absolutely no idea what to do with it once you have it

Ashido Mina: a loud passionate person with a fondness for dress-up (everyday wear or costumes, it doesn’t matter) and people are shocked to find out your level of nerdiness because like… “you don’t look like a nerd…”

Bakugou Katsuki: a spitfire on the inside and sometimes on the outside. You spicy af and people tell you to tone it down. Was a genius in middle school but then found out about everyone else catching up. Has a SUPER fear of failure.

Hagakure Tooru: A cute little flower who blends into the background but never fear, all that gossip is here! People forget you a lot, but you’re used to it. Gotta keep that positive attitude!!!!

Iida Tenya: People tell you you’re weird a lot and they also tell you you’re annoying but you’re just trying to help. Smart af when it comes to what you know, but pretty clueless otherwise.

Jirou Kyouka: You have that one piece of clothing you love dearly and have owned for years and people are shocked to see you whenever you’re not wearing it. Actual music hoe. *takes out one earbud* whut

Kaminari Denki: Admit it you’re an irl troll face but deep down you’re actually the rarest of pepes. Just wants to be loved by friends but you also want a date to prom so jokingly-for-real ask people out on dates. It hasn’t really worked.

Kirishima Eijirou: You love The Gays™ or are irl gay yourself. You’re an actual cinnamon roll but you’re hella burnt on the inside so you’ve got a spine of steel. You love your friends and aren’t afraid to say it. HUGS FOR EVERYONE

Kouda Kouji: You little animal lover you~ <3 ! Shy and sweet, people tell you that you don’t talk much but you’re just anxious. Will talk about your passions until you pass out but if it’s in front of strangers then NO THANKS

Midoriya Izuku: Actual cinnamon roll just trying your best, you’re smart with what you’re passionate about but that also makes you a giant nerd. You have that one weird little quirk that nobody understands so you hide it a lot.

Mineta Minoru: You’re goofy and the squad clown but also naive af. Might not be noticeable on the outside but UR A SINNER HARRY. You read way too much fanfiction because actual porn feels weird/ is too much

Ojiro Mashirao: You like to stick to the background but you also want people to notice when you’ve achieved something so you’re stuck in this cycle of “I want this to look good but also original but not too weird but also cool but also…”

Satou Rikkidou: Your resting bitch face almost has yourself fooled but there’s nothing that can comfort you like food and your best bro can. Is really good at cooking. Part of the “Support Everyone But Forgets Yourself” Squad.

Sero Hanta: You come off as harmless but deep down you’re a disgusting memer waiting for the perfect moment to pun and meme. Your health is important, look at this article you printed off just for your friends’ cringe

Shouji Mezou: You’re quiet at first but hella observant so you can tell the moment to open up and let people see how harmless you are on the inside. Gentle soul who only want the best for others. Will kill/die to protect others.

Todoroki Shouto: You’ve been deeply hurt by someone you looked up to and you know you’re still messed up. You’re trying to grow away from the pain but it’s hard. A little wrapped up in your head, you want to love others again.

Tokoyami Fumikage: You know every word to “Welcome to the Black Parade”. You like really cool, dark and edgy things so your inner emo is Strong™. People tell you that you need to cool your chill and warm up. flip them the bird.

Tsuyu Asui: IRL perfect friend, you are the mom friend/ big sis friend of the group who makes sure everyone stays together and doesn’t do stupid shit. At least, doesn’t do stupid shit without you. Pokèmon was a lifestyle, once.

Uraraka Ochako: Looks innocent on the outside but will punch a guy if they step over that very clear line. Friends and family are to be protected at all costs. You’re so cheap, people laugh but in reality you’re scared to spend money.

Yaoyorozu Momo: Smart af and pretty too, you’re so used to things coming easily to you that you panic as soon as something seems hard. In group projects you’re the one that does 95% of the work. You’re (kinda) ok with this.

Alright, I covered Class 1-A first, but if your fave isn’t on this list, or you wanna look up your other faves, I left it all under the cut!

BONUS:

All Might/ Toshinori Yagi: Actual cinnamon roll trying their best to be a good guardian and lead those who are lost. Is the actual biggest dork around. Tries to be cool but simply… isn’t. We love you anyways. Pls take care of yourself too.

Eraserhead/ Aizawa Shouta: you’re extra salty in need of a nap and still care about everyone around you but still like to fuck with them to show you care. Is a cat person and feels like you can only get along with other cat people.

Anan extended voice actor interview – Sakurai Takahiro, Nakamura Yuichi and Kamiya Hiroshi

How do you feel now that the recording has finished?

Sakurai: To be honest, I didn’t really feel “It’s over. I’m so sad” that much… lol.

Kamiya: Not really, lol.

Nakamura: Hehehe.

Sakurai: Of course, receiving the script and then the recordings themselves were really enjoyable, and it’s unfortunate that we won’t be able to spend time doing that any more, but it’s a little different than feeling sad. It’s similar to the feeling you get after a festival has ended, maybe?

Nakamura: Ah, you’re probably right there, it’s the feeling of having returned to reality. We were burning so brightly. When the recording had only just started, as we were saying the lines we said “This  anime is kind of funny, regardless of whether or not it will be accepted by the general public,” but in the end it got an even bigger reaction than we’d expected.

Kamiya: I thought that perhaps people who didn’t know about it might think, “Is this a serious anime?”… lol. For people who have yet to see it, please keep in mind that it’s a gag anime, lol.

anonymous said: I loved guest star!! 😍 I was wondering if you could make a fic about cole how youve been keeping your relationship for months now and fans are suspecting that youre dating because of all the bts and photos of you and his ig and in one interview that youre having together someone questions you guys about it. sorry if this was long 😂 i love your fics 😘❤

a/n: basically this is another guest star part but an interview!

“god i’m so nervous”. you mutter pulling on your fingers as you wait in the green room with your boyfriend cole and co-star kj. we were about to endure a joint interview and it was your first lot of press you’ve done for riverdale.

but it wasn’t that factor that made you nervous, it was that people were becoming more and more aware of your romantic relationship with cole.

you’d been able to keep it under wraps for the whole two years you’ve been dating but now that you were both sharing the small screen people had caught on.

so you had to control yourselves whenever you were out. refraining yourselves from snap chatting each other or posting photos all over your instagrams.

you had to be strictly platonic. you didn’t need any sort of bad press if you two were to break up. so for now you weren’t a couple, you were just a couple of besties.

or atleast that’s what you thought. you thought were pulling it off. but more and more accounts for your ‘ship name’ with cole had popped up on both twitter and instagram and not to mention the constant questions when meeting fans in the flesh.

especially when they caught you out mid-date. when you two had to coyly pretend that you were waiting on other friends to excuse the fact that you were out together without the rest of the cast.

and to be quite frank you were getting sick of all the pretending and running around. sometimes you just wanted kiss your boyfriend or hold his hand whilst you walked down the streets.

not that you really had the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll down the road, being famous disney stars and all.

“you’ll be fine”, cole whispers walking toward you making sure no one was staring at the two of you. he placed a soft hand on your shoulder, instantly filling you with comfort.

“just breathe okay? if they ask don’t say yes but don’t say no, yeah? that way we aren’t lying or avoiding the question” you nod smiling to the boy as a young women calls you over to the interview room.

the three of you file in, sitting down on a huge plush couch, each boy on either side of you as the interviewer sits in her own seperate lounge chair.

the interviewer starts her intro off strong turning toward the three of you. “kj apa as archie andrews, y/n l/n as c/n c/l/n and cole sprouse as jughead jones on the cw’s riverdale!”

the three of you all smile greeting the interviewer, and the camera crew, as you settle into the interview, talking about the upcoming season and possible plot.

you were too busy worrying to even pay attention to half the stuff that was spewing from the ladies mouth, that you barely noticed her turn to you and begin to engage in conversation until kj smoothly nudged you.

patting down your dress you push your hair off your shoulder as she addressed you directly.

“so how is it for you to go from disney to the darker side of the cw?”

“i mean it’s a lot different to disney i’ll tell you that”. you pause the group laughing to themselves “i didn’t even really think i’d be coming back to acting but i couldn’t resist the role”.

she nods playing with the cards in her palms. “so anything in particular that’s vastly different?”

“well - it’s still directed for the younger generation but i feel like in disney it was more so for the children than the preteens for example…and the content we’re filming is a lot heavier than the stuff we dealt with on y/d/s but it’s also just as fun and exciting as i remember”.

“so you and cole -” you freeze at the mention of him, “both disney kids coming back to acting. kj what was it like to know that you were working with some of the greatest names in disney?”

you breathe a sigh of relief taking a sip from the glass of water on the table as you listen to kj rattle on about how much he adored cole and dylan.

“both of their shows i watched religiously. me and my mates used to love it aye. especially y/d/s with uh y/n we loved her a lot - im pretty sure one of my mates had a poster of her”.

you blush giggling to yourself. “so you had a crush on y/n?” the interviewer laughs, kj turning red at the words. you continue laughing placing a hand around his arm.

“aw kj!!!” you swoon embarrassing him further. cole joined in on the fun, “yeah he was a big fan we kinda had to push him a bit and be like ’hey buddy“.

kj shakes his head furiously to the camera his words rushing out in defence “nah nah nah”. sending you and cole into a laughing fit as the kiwi struggled to cover up his words.

“i mean i was a fan. like who wasn’t aye, but nah it’s a lot of fun filming with them and we all are good friends with the others too. but ugh yeah- it’s hard to go out anywhere because fans notice them from a mile away”

the interviewer laughs “wait people still notice you as your disney characters?” we both nod cole taking the lead.

“i mean it’s very flattering but as you can see im not the same kid with the blonde shaggy bowl cut so sometimes i question how they’d recognise me- especially from friends”.

you smile the interviewer looking to you for input “what about you?”

you nod leaning back slightly into the couch feeling coles arm against the top of the couch.

“they do yes, i go anywhere and they all yell ”c/n“ and sometimes i just forget and then they’re running and i’m running and then they’re screaming and i’m screaming”.

the room started to laugh.

“it’s a very weird situation” you giggle the interviewer cutting in.

“and you looking nothin like that girl anymore- you look amazing!”

you place a hand over your heart in awe “thank god for that” you joke poking fun at yourself. “i grew up and hit puberty and sometimes when i hear someone say ’hey you look like that girl off y/d/s? i’m like damn i must be having a rough day”.

the interviewer giggles “oh don’t be so hard on yourself- doesn’t she look hot now boys?” she slaps kj’s leg and they both nod.

“god yeah she’s come along way from disney-even though i still had a crush on c/n”, cole comments a smile growing on your face at the compliment.

“so are you all single?”

your heart plummets at the question. the dreaded question for anyone in the industry is asked whenever they are in one or aren’t. no one wants to be asked this question ever.

cole answers first surprising you “i’m not no”.

“i am” kj chirps taking a long drink from his water.

“i’m not either” you clear your throat smiling, refusing to make eye contact with cole.

the interviewer smirks knowing she got the answer you wanted “oh so you two are off the market”. she pretends to act surprised “well who are they”.

cole replies cutely “for us to know and you to never find out- all you need to know is she’s beautiful and one of a kind”.

you fight off the blush tinting on your cheeks as the interviewer wraps up the interview.

“one last question before you guys leave- serpent jughead? yes or no?”

“yes yes yes” you stammer feeling confident. “have you seen jughead in a leather jacket? serpent jughead is the best thing to come out of riverdale”.

cole blushes and the interview is officially over. cole’s manager walking over to escort us back to our green room.

“i think you might have just outed us” he teases walking dangerously close to you, his hot breathe on your neck.

“what can i say- serpent juggie just does some indescribable things to me”.

shikikira  asked:

Yay ask box open again! Can I request a scenario or headcanon of RFA +V+Saeran with a MC that knew them before and they had broken her heart. MC remembers them, but the boys+Jaehee, however, have completely forgotten them. Thank you!

Owch…That would break my heart. These aren’t the best, because I had a trouble with a few of them, but I hope you guys enjoy them! Saeran’s might be weird because it’s usually a scenario I personally like and I couldn’t think of anything else, so sorry if it doesn’t meet your fancy (and sorry I’m gross)

Yoosung

- Every time he talked about how he didn’t have a girlfriend It hurt.

- It was bad enough he even talked about how he had gotten asked out before, and he turned the girls down, but the fact that he couldn’t even put two and two together with you being one of those girls hurt the worse.

- Were you really that forgettable? Were you bland? Void of any remarkable personality?

- You remembered it well. Him handing you your love letter back, a nervous glance to the side as he explained how he couldn’t date you. Something about school, about him being too focused.

- For the longest time, you thought ‘Rika’ was some girl he had a crush on. He’d mention her a lot at school, and you let your heart crack every time you over-heard.

- Because, from how he gushed, she was the best damn thing.

- Imagine how surprised you were to hear it was his cousin of all people, once you enter the RFA chat.

- Granted…It didn’t make up for how your heart ached, but…

- You were dropping hints constantly about it to Yoosung, trying to get him to remember you, and when that failed you thought maybe this could be your chance to win him over

- But that all fell apart when Seven teased about him knowing you already

- And how he couldn’t.  Remember. You.

- Were you this pretty blonde in his class?

- Oh…No? Some girl he saw at the store a lot?

- Wait, maybe that club leader??

- Nope nope nope. Each answer got made you feel so unremarkable. You ended up closing out of the chat for the day, avoiding any messages or calls

- The next day you hesitantly opened the app again, feeling a wave of exhaustion hit you when Yoosung immediately started calling you.

- At first he tried to apologize, but half-way through his apology his excitement came rushing back and he tried placing you again and again.

- “Yoosung-“

- “Wait, were you actually in my grade or-“

- “Yes,” You sighed, worrying your lip a bit before replying. “Yoosung, you rejected me.”

- “…What?”

- You leaned back against the couch, covering your eyes with your forearm as you struggled to relax and explain. Explained what you looked like, what grade, when it was, even the day.

- And he felt horrible. He could vaguely remember it.

- Fumbling with his words, he tried to come up with a solution.

- “I was very focused on work and…No one else back then. I’m still not in the best place, but if you wanted to start over…And give me a chance to properly apologize…I would like that.”

- It wasn’t the best, but… It was a start.

Jumin

- Of course you didn’t really work right beside him like Jaehee did, but as someone constantly running into him in the elevator, or seeing him at meetings you were forced to take apart of, or god forbid his random visits into departments and running into yours

- Over the course of a year, you developed a crush on him. You didn’t think it was too bad, since the two of you spoke sparsely and only in terms of work, and realistically the two of you would never, ever, come close to any type of friendship, let alone relationship

- So what was the harm in daydreaming about the handsome Mr. Han?

- But apparently, you weren’t so smooth about hiding it like you used to be. One boring meeting and you found yourself too focused on him, zoning out until he called you out on it.

- In front of everyone at the meeting. You came up with a flimsy excuse, something about a lack of sleep, and he made a remark on how little you must have cared about your job if you were so uninterested in it

- Owch. There were a few snickers as the meeting continued, and once it started wrapping up you were ready to dart out before you heard him call your name.

- As the others left, you felt like a young student ready to receive detention. He eyed you for a moment. “If working in your department is so uninteresting, perhaps it would be better for you to switch to another one, before you get fired.”

- You sputtered, trying to come up with a reason to your behavior, trying to explain that you loved your job- Just something. Before you could speak, he took note of your blushing face and let out a hum.

- “Or are you another woman that has a crush on me? It’s rather tiresome dealing with my employees just working because of their feelings for me, rather than to work. I suggest you come to terms with the fact that it will never work out, and to focus more on your job like the others.”

- You wanted to cry right on the spot. Thankfully, by some saving grace, you didn’t. You managed to fumble out a goodbye and leave the room, but as you got closer and closer to your workspace you realized just how quickly the gossip of what happened would have spread around. This may be a big company, full of constantly busy employees, but…They always had time for gossip.

- So after leaving early, feigning some sickness, you just didn’t come to work the next day. Or the next after that…Or after that. You just left without a word.

- A few months later, joining the RFA nearly gave you a heart attack as you saw both Jumin and his secretary in there. You were so scared. Granted he was just being blunt, but you wanted to avoid anything dealing with C&R.

- But when Seven revealed that you had worked with him not too long ago, he had no memory of you whatsoever.

-…Were you really that insignificant? He didn’t even remember a girl that supposedly had a crush on him just a few months ago?

- Jaehee didn’t even know you. Apparently a lot of employees just upped and left. Thankfully, when being questioned, Zen just popped in saying that everyone hated working for him and basically talked for you.

- Of course you refused going to his home later on. You opted to try cheering him up through the phone, ignoring the comments about how nice your voice was, and so the first time the two of you saw each other at the party…No light of recognition hit him.

- Dejected, you tried leaving and mingling with guests like you were supposed to, but sooner or later one of the other RFA members pointed you out and he was quick to pull you to the side, trying to wrangle details of your leave out of you.

- After a solid ten minutes of him obviously not letting up any time soon, you finally explained what had happened. Recounting the event hurt, and seeing his surprised face didn’t help at all. You really were forgettable.

- “Perhaps…I should start being nicer to women, like Assistant Kang suggested, starting with you.” He admitted. Taking your hand, he continued. “I’m very busy, so if it’s not a person I don’t directly work with, I often don’t remember every face or name. I never had a reason to before. But, if you’d let me, I’d like to make up for my careless behavior from before.”

- It was going to take some time to get over that embarrassment, but you were slightly glad that your quiet fantasy was becoming a reality.

Zen

- You worked with him for a while. Granted, not on stage, but part of the crew getting the actors ready.

- Being one of the make-up artists, you worked on several of the cast, including the star of almost all of the shows, even if he was still oblivious to it. He was still pretty new, only a year older than you, but was quickly making his way up.

- He always chatted you up while he could. Nerves? Just talkative? You didn’t know, but you welcomed the small laughs he gave you, and allowed yourself to swoon a bit when he complimented your skills with the make-up.

- And after working with him for a few months, getting to know him a bit better, that’s when you popped the idea of maybe going to a local bar and hanging out, maybe switching numbers…

- Just to get awkwardly rejected. He mentioned something about not knowing you well, and how he had no time for any relationship. Not now, when he hardly had time to practice his lines.

- It hurt, but seeing him slowly start to flirt with fans as he became more popular… That hurt worse.

- Flash forward to you joining the RFA a few years later, and that old wound opening up rather harshly when he had no idea who you were.

- At first the flirting was nice, but the more you knew he had completely forgotten you, the more uncomfortable you became with it. Even getting to the point of trying to avoid him in chats

- It just didn’t feel right. Here he was, treating you so kindly when he was so cold to you before. Didn’t he still have his career to worry about? Jaehee wasn’t hesitant on bringing that up.

- Finally, when the two of you met, and he reached for a hug, you pulled back and saw concern flash across his face.

- “Do…Do you really not remember me?”

- Hearing him admit it, and seeing how confused he was, hurt so much more. You rushed your feelings out- How he had forgotten you, your confession, how awkward it was but you couldn’t just leave because they needed you

- And he felt so fucking guilty. He tried explaining himself, but all he could really offer was that he was indeed just focusing on his career at the time. He didn’t have any chances to skimp out on practice, or risk any lost sleep in between rehearsals and his shitty job at the time.

- But now that he was better off, able to live without extra jobs, he had a bit more time…

- You still felt uncomfortable, but you agreed to humor him a bit. Only with the promise of the two of you sitting down to really get to know each other before any dates.

- Maybe then it wouldn’t hurt as much.

Jaehee

- You worked in a nearby department. Granted, the two of you couldn’t interact much at first, but later on, as you couldn’t get over how cute she was, you slowly tried talking more and more.

- In the employee lounge? Brief moments when the two of you shared an elevator? When she swung by your department for some papers? You were trying to make some sort of small talk every time you saw her.

- And, eventually, after a few months of this happening, you had come to the realization that you didn’t just think she was cute- She was sweet, admirable, beautiful, and you couldn’t stop thinking about her. A small little fluttering in your chest turned into a full blown crush

- And you were helpless to it.

- Finally, one day when the two of you were alone walking down a hallway, you asked her out on a coffee date, actually using the word ‘date’.

- And she nearly dropped her papers.

- After helping her pick them up, she sputtered something about how she didn’t feel that way, or was attracted to women at all. A few panicked glances, and she excused herself and took off

- And you felt horrible.

- So when you entered the RFA chat and saw who it was, (and groaned about Jumin being there as well) you anxiously tried to come up with explanations for the past, even if it was bullshit, but…She had no idea who you were.

- Your name, the fact that you worked at the same company…She was clueless, and in fact was even more suspicious of you for a while. You brushed it off- Maybe she was bad with names? Maybe she just needed to see you? Or hear your voice?

- Nope. Nothing.

- It was hard not getting emotional at the RFA party- That brief moment of recognition was just for the RFA you, not the you that had been rejected a few months back

- So after excusing yourself to the back to calm your nerves, and dealing with the party itself, you approached her during the clean up. She was still a bit rattled from basically quitting her job, so you felt bad, but you needed to know.

- Would she still want to be friends?

- On the balcony you rushed the words out- How the two of you really knew each other, how you had asked her out- Everything.

- She had that panicked look on her face again, and after a few moments of agonizing silence, she finally spoke up

- “I…I never had a woman ask me out before, so I over-reacted. Actually, it had been quite some time since anyone had asked me out…”

- She paused, looking at the view the balcony provided.

- “I’m more aware of my feelings now…And if you don’t mind, I would like to take you up on that coffee date now. Well, once the shop gets finished being refurbished, haha.”

- You probably shouldn’t have basically jumped her for a hug, but you were so happy when she laughed and returned it.

Seven

- To be fair, the two of you had never really connected. The two of you barely knew each other, but his jokes and silly nature won you over quickly as he became a regular where you worked

- I mean…He had to buy all that Phd Pepper somewhere, right?

- You weren’t the best cashier by a long shot. You worked hard, worked harder than you were paid to do, anyway, and this was a temp job until you found a better one soon

- Usually you had a few nice customers, but he was one of the…quirky…ones. Your coworkers thought he was funny, a little weird, but he was nice to you so you didn’t care much.

- As the job got more and more shitty, with bad management and such, his regular visits every week or so always brightened your mood up

- But one week he didn’t visit…Or the week after that…Or the month after that. He just stopped coming, and with that being one of the few perks about coming into your shitty job it bummed you out a lot.

- Cut forward to you quitting that job a while back, and then joining in the RFA. You were weirded out at first, since you never found out his name, but his jokes calmed you down pretty fast.

- But when he posted a picture? You were so excited! You gushed about how you worked at so and so and used to see him all the time

- The others joined in laughing at how he only bought drinks most of the time, or other junk food, but he was confused. Even with the background check and seeing everything about you online, he didn’t know who you were.

- That hurt the worse.

- Not to mention the emotional roller coaster he took you on the next few weeks.

- Once things had calmed down, you tried prying a bit again. Did he really not remember you? Were you that plain? He was quick to jump up, grab your hands and say you weren’t plain or boring, but…Then how did he forget you?

- He made some excuse about how he tried not to get too attached to people. He probably thought you were cute back when he first saw you, since the second time he undoubtedly thought so, just…He couldn’t risk it, so he never let himself become too attached. It’s what he always did.

- It helped a bit, just a bit, knowing that in the end he still loved you, but it was better than nothing

V

- At first, you didn’t know if your feelings were from admiration for his art, or for how he carried himself. He seemed so humble, so beautiful, and you were just as smitten with him as you were his work

- Quietly, you were a fan, but you tried your best not to gush or panic when his eyes met yours at his private little shows. You were lucky enough just to get in- You never wanted to risk being unable to see them ever again

- It was about his fifth show that you tried flirting with him. Not grossly, nothing over-the-top, just the quiet “I’d love to chat with you more!” type of flirting.

- And it went horribly. He blushed a bit, taken aback by the implications of a date, before quietly explaining he had his eye on someone else, and had promised her a date of his own.

- Joining the RFA, knowing you had to live up to her name, the woman that beat you to him, made your recovering wound ache deeper

- Not to mention he didn’t even know who you were. Just how many people asked him out? If he was actually famous…Odds are many did.

- You bottled it up, powered through it. He wasn’t on much anyway, but hearing about him from Jumin always brought up the old pains.

- What hurt the worse was never getting to explain, to have a chance at that coffee date you proposed.

- After being in the chat for a while, trying to help everyone… Watching his supposedly dead fiance at his funeral… How were you supposed to handle this?

- You cried, hard. Probably harder than anyone should after seemingly knowing him for just two weeks, but it hurt so much. Just when you had hope of recovering that old wound, just when you thought you could at least support him again, your chances were shoved away as soon as that bullet hit his chest.

- You weren’t going to be able to have him remember you, but hopefully you could at least do his memory some justice.

Saeran

- One. Night. Stands.

- Granted, the main points of those were to be quickly over and done with, leaving and just not giving general care towards the other person

- But instead of a one time thing, it slipped into a few times. Still sparsely, and you weren’t expecting the message and (bad) selfie to prove it him a week later, after your first meet up from the bar you loved.

- Then, about every other week, the two of you met for quickies. Of course the first time he just up and left. The second time too, but the third time he ended up staying a good hour afterwards, both of you exhausted and making light conversation. Somewhat. He wasn’t much of a talker.

- But soon after that, sometimes he would hang around enough to recharge, go again, and chat sparingly before leaving.

- It was probably from the rush of good sex, but you slowly started a crush on him and his rough attitude. It didn’t help that he was actually a little attractive, either.

- So about a couple of month later, when he dropped full contact and his number leading to a dead end, it kind of hurt. A lot.

- You were a bit proud that you didn’t cry more than a couple of times about it, but he was the first crush you had in a very long time, so admittedly you got a bit too attached.

- And so, after all of the RFA mess happened, and you finally got to see who the hacker was, well… Due to circumstances, you didn’t mention it until a few months after.

- And he didn’t remember you at all.

- Not even something gross, like if you were a good fuck or not. He just had no memory of you at all.

- Sure, it was most likely the drugs in his system and the stress he had been going through. That didn’t mean it didn’t hurt you, though.

- At first, you left it at that, made some excuse on how it didn’t matter since the two of you knew each other now, but a few hours later he brought it back up again, asking in a low voice exactly how you two knew each other.

- And, since it was just the two of you in Seven’s bunker, the other twin running out to buy a few groceries, you hesitantly explained.

- And the look on his face made you regret ever bringing it up in the first place. He looked angry? Pained? Pissed off?? He didn’t respond at first, just letting out a few frustrated sighs as he tapped his foot rapidly, grasping at some sort of explanation.

- “When I did stuff like that… I made a point not to remember who I slept with.” He paused, then kept on. “It doesn’t mean you’re forgettable. I made it a point not to get attached and just get what I wanted. If I contacted you again after the first time…It probably just meant I didn’t want to look for anyone else if you were still willing. Or something, fuck.”

- Your chest hurt, and that’s when you realized you had been holding your breath. Obviously, if what you said didn’t have him remember you fully…There were others he treated like that.

- He noticed your tender expression, how you were biting your lip in thought, and he finally faced you, almost even reaching out before pulling his hand back.

- “I wasn’t in the best place back then. I was fucked up, honestly. But… I’m working on my issues right now. And I’m sorry if I hurt you. I remember you for how you’ve helped me, for how patient you are while helping me and Saeyoung. I’m sorry for not remembering you for sex, but…” He trailed off, his shoulders dropping as he failed to come up with the right words

- “Well… I think I’d rather be remembered for helping you, rather than that. “ You admitted, and he let out a tense sigh.

- “I know it probably hurt you, but…If we could start over, I would appreciate it.”

- Starting over didn’t seem too bad… Hopefully with time, these tangled emotions would slowly fade, and you could get to know him for who he really was.
