How To Motivate Yourself To Write

This was meant to provide motivation, but honestly, this is more of a list of ways to make sure you get it done, rather than make yourself “motivated”. Either way, this should benefit you somehow.


  • In the words of Chuck Wendig, “do not fucking multitask”. Carve out a specific time to write and use it to write. Don’t try to simultaneously write and tweet and check your email. Whether it be 15 minutes or 2 hours, write, and only write.
  • Take breaks occasionally. You can’t just sit there and fog up your creative lens. Go outside and go for a walk. Go to coffee with your friends for an hour. Do something to relax your brain for a while. It’s the same with studying. Don’t drive yourself up the wall because you feel you’re “on a roll”. Your ideas and plans will still be there when you get back. If you begin to get frustrated or your foot starts to fall asleep, take a break.
  • Use a rewards system. Say, for every 100 words, you get a piece of chocolate. After eating a regular sized Hershey’s bar, you’ve got 1200 words. Go you! (I personally fine this incredibly useful.)
  • Have people you trust hold you accountable. Have your best friend (or partner, if you’ve got one) check in when they know you should be writing to make sure you did.
  • Read books like a writer. Read a shitty book and pick it apart to find what you don’t like about it. Read a good book to find what you do like. Use these reflections and apply them to your own work. Nothing helps quite like learning from other people’s mistakes and success.
  • Don’t get stuck in the planning stages. You may get really excited while planning a story, that huge plot twist, a minor character’s backstory, etc, but keep in mind that at some point you’re going to have to sit down and hash it out. A lot of promising writers never get past the planning stages, so in the words of my very wise boyfriend: “Just write”.
  • Write in places that make your creative juices flow. Get cozy in bed with your laptop open to a word document, light a few candles, make some tea, get that incense going, and write. Music really helps to get in the mood as well, and if you would like to take a look at my writing playlist, here it is, free for public consumption.
  • Keep your mind open to new ideas and changes to your story. Your idea will develop and evolve over time, and the beauty of writing is that you can change anything you want and there are no consequences. If you decide to completely scrap a character, remove a subplot, add one in, or change the plot but keep the same characters, you’re totally free to do so. Nothing about writing is set in stone, so stay open minded to new concepts and changes and, most importantly, criticism. (I won’t elaborate on this because I might end up making a whole other post about this topic in the future.)

As always, this is just a compilation of the tips and tricks I’ve found the most useful in my own experience. They may not help, they may help a lot, it really could go either way or somewhere in between, but all the same, I hope this proves useful to you.

Hi HeyWriters! I was wondering: do you have a tip to create a weak point on main characters? I´m making a story, but I´m having trouble since my main character is TOO overpowered. Could you help me with this?

(All of this is written under the assumption your character has superpowers or “special” abilities, so forgive me if you meant a different kind of power.)

I created a character concept when I was twelve. She had all the superpowers of my favorite heroes and then some. As time wore on she gained more and more until eventually my adolescent brain invented logic and realized she was actually ridiculous. Here’s how I depowered this character, who’s name is Ace, without completely ruining her coolness.

Step One:

Don’t be greedy. Any ability that does not contribute to the story needs to go. It’s taking up space that could be filled with credibility. I decided early on that Ace didn’t need most of her abilities, and by the end of the story she only relies on a few to get the job done. Also, if a character can do more than one thing that are all basically the same thing some of those should probably go (invisibility and camouflage, superspeed and teleportation, etc.). 

Step Two:

Apply real-world science. If you try to make your depiction realistic, you’ll want to have an idea of how these abilities might work and how they might not. Of course, you should suspend disbelief for some things if they’re truly essential to your character, but others can be adapted. For Ace there are some powers that only work under the right circumstances, and others that her body rejects or that give her physical pain when she uses them. Most importantly, special strengths come with special weaknesses. Sensitive hearing means loud noises are more jarring or harmful, regeneration means metabolism speeds up and the person needs to eat as much as a body builder. Any superpower you pick out will have a drawback, I guarantee it; if not a physical one than a social one (I’ll get to that).

Step Three: 

Consider how the character feels about all this power and why they obtained it in the first place. Ace was not born with abilities, but over time she chose certain powers for the purpose of defending herself or others. Some of her powers fade away when she stops using them, like any skill you fail to practice, and some abilities she just plain old refuses to use for personal reasons. Some are too difficult or time-consuming for her to master, and some even trigger memories of her traumatic past thus she discards them. This way she has a choice in the matter and her choice is not to bite off more than she can chew or what she doesn’t want in the first place. 

Step Four:

How do other characters feel about all this power? Perhaps some or all of your character’s powers intimidate, frighten, or anger others in the story. One of Ace’s friends dislikes how unstoppable she is, and others are taken aback by some of the things she can do or how she looks when she does them. On the whole, she hides what she can do or picks small things to do instead of big things, downplaying her own power when necessary. How your supporting characters react to the force of nature that is your MC is the most important aspect of her power.

Here’s an example from the X-Men of how other characters might react.

Yes, Ace is a flawed concept and all the advice I just gave is only a patch kit for that flaw. However, overpowered characters continue to excite readers and viewers alike, so I would never suggest we dispense with them altogether. Just, when you’re getting a headache from how overwhelming your character is, it’s good to consider dialling it all back and focusing on the power of their personality instead.

What do you do with Too Many Ideas Syndrome?

At first you embrace it: “I’ll never stop writing ‘cause I’ll never run out of ideas! This is awesome!!!!” And then you realize that with so many ideas, you’re going to have to pick one to run with and then it’s like uh…yeah…  

Too Many Ideas

This question has given me the opportunity to bring back the cute bunny post from 2015. In it I discuss how you bounce back and forth between ideas, so take a look. It might help!

In that post I mention that it’s really a matter of going with whatever idea is most interesting to you at any given time. This could change from day to day, so one day you might work with one idea and the next you work with another. This is really basic advice, so I’m going to try to take it one step further. 

Start with Your Characters

If you’re overwhelmed by how many concept/plot ideas you’ve got, make a list of each concrete idea and set it aside. Then, work on character development. Start with one key character and then work outward. 

You might be wondering, how do I create characters without any kind of plot, but writers do actually do this. We’ve got questions in our inbox right now from writers that have developed characters and are stumped on the plot. So it’s definitely possible. 

This key character you’re starting with? Begin by establishing aspects of them that are separate from plot, things like age, gender ID, racial/ethnic background, sexual ID, and obviously their name. Go as far as you feel compelled to go, but start with these basic facts. 

Then, think about their relationships/friendships. Do they have lifelong friends they knew as children? Do they have siblings they’re close with? A parent they bond well with? Think about those they’re friendly with, and then do the same thing you did when you started with your key character - their age, gender ID, ect. ect.

Next, think about potential future relationships. These don’t have to be romantic relationships. If your key character is an artsy type, maybe you envision them clashing with someone who operates with logic and reason, and then seeing how they become friends or enemies over it. This leads you to create yet another character. 

What you’re doing here is developing character dynamics. You’re thinking about who these characters are first, before you even begin to consider what will happen to them. Having a cast of characters in place before you plot anything out can immediately draw you in. As I’ve said before, this is one reason we write fanfiction. We’re attached to the established characters and we want to imagine them in new situations. 

The Character Quick-Change

Grab the list you made earlier of all your plot ideas and concepts. Start casting them in roles in the ideas you’ve already come up and see how they fit. One of your ideas might be set in a fictional, fantasy world with fairies, werewolves, dragons, while another idea might be an urban fantasy where they are no magical creatures but there is magic. And maybe another idea has no magic at all. So as you plug your characters into each vastly different idea, the two start to mold each other. Your characters drive the plot, and the plot you chose will help you add deeper levels to your existing characters. 

If something doesn’t feel right, move onto the next idea. Imagine your characters are standing on a stage, and you’re simply switching out the scenery and the costumes. You’re giving them opportunities to play different roles, but you’re allowing them to bring their own personalities and backgrounds to each role they take on. 

Eventually you should find something that just fits. And when that happens, you keep going with it. You might run into problems as you’re writing, and you might be tempted to move onto another idea, and that’s okay! Go with your instincts and see what happens. Discipline with an idea is hard to maintain, so don’t feel guilty about it. It’s something all writers struggle with. 

When it comes to frustration during the writing process, the trouble is differentiating between your idea just being dead and the typical writing problems that you’ll see with any idea. But I think that’s a whole other topic that maybe I’ll get into at a later date ;)

Writing = experimentation. Try things out and see what’s working and what isn’t. You’ll know an idea is worth exploring when it happens, because your excitement and enthusiasm will soar.

Midoriya and his many parents

 I’ve mentioned this briefly in Aizawa’s profile, but BnHA is just chock full of father figures. There’s a big emphasis on mentors and fatherhood, more so than in a lot of other manga and anime I follow.
Now, the idea of the ’sensei’ is fairly classic, the old master who teaches the young hero their secret technique and all that. But the young heroes in BnHA, with their high stakes environment, do have a lot of them.

 This is especially true for Midoriya.


 Inko Midoriya

Surely I’m not the only one who thinks it’s super interesting that we have not seen Midoriya’s biological father? Like… he wasn’t even on the couch watching the Sports Festival.

Considering his mother appears to be a house wife in a fairly nice apartment, I think it’s safe to assume that he at least exists. Maybe he’s a salaryman with a lot of overtime, more likely he’s working overseas.
Whatever the case, he’s very much an absent dad. 
Now, absentee parents aren’t that much of a deal in anime. The ‘16-year old living alone in Tokyo’ is a bit of a trope, after all, but here, with the emphasis on several characters parents, it feels like a statement. This is the manga in which we know the entire family set-up of Tsuyu, and the names and appearance of Jirou’s parents. Much as I love Jirou, she’s a side character.
For the main character to have a blank space like that, is a Thing. It means that growing up, Izuku had one parental figure, and that parental figure was his mother.

And give the woman credit: she did amazing.
It is not easy to raise a child practically by yourself. Certainly not a child that is considered an outcast by society. The amount of love Midoriya receives from his mother is heart-warming, their relationship is one of the better ones portrayed in shounen and as a result, Midoriya is a kid with an incredible amount of mental fortitude, capable of handling some pretty devastating circumstances.
His mother has been a supporting pillar in his early childhood, which, remember, was pretty rough on account of all the bullying. As such she has shaped a lot of his personality. She’s equipped him with confidence, with an unshakable belief in himself.
However, she is very much not a hero.

Her love is one of katsudon and hugs and kind words and worried tears. She wants him safe, above all else. She’s never going to teach him hand-to-hand and going by her advice alone will not make him into the hero he desperately wants to be.
Him quite literally leaving the warm nest she made for him to learn how to fight evil people is a big part of him growing up.


 All Might

Maybe that’s why Izuku puts so much of his hopes and dreams on All Might.
Here’s his ultimate hero taking an interest in little old him.
It’s a fairy tale. A manga trope.
And I really believe that he sees an alternate father figure in All Might once he gets closer to him. They have their wax on, wax off moment on the beach, with All Might encouraging him to get stronger. This is the trope. The sensei, mister Miyagi thing where the kid gets prepped to receive the ultimate technique (in the form of a lock of… hair, whatever).
But unlike traditional masters, and unlike his biological father, All Might sticks around. He is a presence in his life. He cares for Midoriya and his continued success in a way that, at this point, no other male figure does.

Dad Might gives Midoriya a whole bunch of very important advice, but it’s good to note that this isn’t a rough or distant sort of male mentorship.
All Might quite literally opens himself up to Midoriya.
He shows him his weaker side. The skeletal side. The broken side.
Because All Might, let’s not forget, is a friggin mess.

I mean, I know he’s going through a lot, but this man is Such a Dork. It’s definitely endearing and it is also one of his best traits as a character. However: as a person, he’s really not very well equipped to be raising a teenager. He lacks, in a way, the stability and level-headedness that comes with the position of a teacher.
He cares too much. About everything. All the time.
And he nurtures that side of Midoriya, when Midoriya already has plenty of that.

He can’t help but admire Midoriya’s selflessness. Can’t help but praise the very foundation upon which his own heroics are based: helping people.
When he saves Todoroki. When he saves Bakugou, All Might is there to tell Midoriya that what he did is all right.

And this is certainly important for Midoriya to hear, but at this point it’s also not the only thing he needs to hear. 


 Aizawa Shouta

Luckily Midoriya also gets a more traditional teacher figure.
It’s interesting to note that, despite being the younger of the two, and despite the fact that he sometimes teaches from an honest to god sleeping bag, Aizawa is a much more stable mentor and general Adulting Adult.
He still cares about his students, but he’s also much more likely to Act as a Teacher.

Because Aizawa immediately picks up on Izuku’s self-mutilation.
He watched the entrance exam, he knows that Izuku’s quirk is, at this point, extremely flawed. That Izuku doesn’t have control over it.
He explains it in a pretty standoffish way, and certainly this early in the show it comes across as cruel, but he’s not wrong.
Izuku is breaking bones every single time he uses his quirk at this point in time. If he does anything with his quirk, he’ll be a casualty.
Him using only a single finger is framed as a feat of intelligence,
but it is also INSANE.
'Oh you only broke one finger, you have nine attacks left’.
That is NOT a good plan. Don’t do that. For fuck’s sake.
I hope we all realize that what Midoriya is doing is Not Healthy.
He is eating away at himself, destroying his own body over and over again.

When Aizawa tells Midoriya to get a grip on his powers he’s not just being an ass. He’s being a responsible adult, a teacher that cares about the general well-being of the students assigned to him.

Summer Anime 2016

This summer we have so many anime with an all-male cast, I was so happy I decided to to a rec/ranking/review/summary. Note: I only watch anime with mostly males I’m sorry it’s just what I like lol so this list may not match yours. (I cannot stand female leads - except maybe Gintama? - because they will escalate into romantic relationships and they annoy me to no end. It’s like the only purpose of females is romance and I hate that.) And a warning is that I’m kind of shallow so I normally look at the guys’ looks and then their character. But good character and relationship developments are definitely essential to me too.

1. Fukigen na Mononokean

I’ve rec it so many times I feel like I’m part of the official publicity comm but it’s really good :) My favourite character is Abeno cause he’s really adorable and tsundere (?) haha. If you like youkai, friendship and touching moments, do try this out!! It’s a little similar to Natsume Yuujinchou too.

2. Servamp

It looks really interesting so I watched it and when I saw the OP I screamed cause all-male cast! Compared to Spring 2016 this season does look more appealing to me. And I’ve ran out of anime with all bromance (other than sports anime) and no romance. So anyway for Servamp, Kuro was a really cute cat, and the setting seems interesting enough for me to chase. I feel like I might not like the main character as much though but we’ll see. 

3. Fudanshi Kokou Seikatsu

Ahh this is really cute I can relate so much to the main character as a Fujoshi myself :D and I can hardly find friends who can fangirl with me. It’s really sad to be embarrassed for liking gay ships ;n; The only bad thing about the series is that it’s too short each episode haha.

4. D.Gray-man Hallow

I’ve read the manga but didn’t understand most of it. Still, it’s likeable and I like Allen and Kanda. I felt like this season they beautified all the characters and Kanda definitely looks better with his new hairstyle/fringe :DD I hope they can animate most of the manga and I hope we can finally understand what is going on with the 14th.

5. Handa-kun

I just watched the 1st episode today and all I can is that it’s really good and hilarious omg. Only it’s too short with the first 9min trying to break the fourth wall and I couldn’t understand the humor at all. Still, the rest of the episode was worth it! Can’t wait for the rest!

Always remember, whenever someone makes you feel bad for liking him, throw this in their faces. How do you claim to love a character if you don’t even spend a penny on them, or take the time to fill out official polls and give Atlus feedback?

Also I just can’t see this show going forward from here…michael was such an intrinsic part of the show.

Like…They’re actually going to put Jane and Raf back together, it’s CLEAR that that’s happening. Which is just? So incredibly frustrating

Why save him at all? It’s not like he’s had a huge storyline this season (most of it has been recovery centered which is now. Well.) It feels like they brought him back solely for Jane to lose her virginity to him, as if that would “throw a bone” to this side of the fandom so they could then get on with Raf and Jane. I’m.

They skipped three years so they don’t even have to address the grief. Like. If you’re going to kill a character you should at least properly deal with the ramifications of that I’m sorry.

Bringing back the abusive af rose and Luisa relationship? I’m so tired. I mean I saw it coming but. Honestly what made this show good was the balance between the jane plot and the drug ring plot, and a large part of that had to do with Michael. Both in being with Jane and spearheading the detective aspect. Sin rostro was michaels case. He sacrificed so much for it. He was supposed to be the one to solve it. He was supposed to be the one to finish it. Are we just done completely with the police stuff now? I loved that part of the show and have missed it this season, even with Michael still there.

They didn’t even giving him a good death scene. I get that that’s how life works but really? A throwaway scene in the last minutes of the episode? After everything?

No more Rogelio and Michael

No more Mateo and Michael (or baby Mateo in general which is :( )

No more jane and Michael

And most significantly…Just no more michael.

I’m angry and upset and I realize a lot of that has to do with yes, half of my otp and one of my favorite characters dying. But also the more I process the more I become aware of how sloppy this was written and planned and that’s equally upsetting to me.

What our your feelings on All Might and Deku? Both as Mentor and Student, Father Figure and Son Figure, and just as a character relation in general. I personally find it one of the most touching mentorships in the show, and I guess that's the point as they are center stage. (Just give us all of the hugs Hiro. Let Izuku hug skeleton dad)

All Might and Izuku’s relationship

Oh no Anon, what have you done, sending me an ask about one of my favorite subject in BNHA? Do you like to read my overthought endless answers that much? I’ve taken quite the time to write, so I’m late for this one and all the others in my inbox. Sorry; I hope this sorta long appreciation post will take you some time to read and make the waiting more tolerable. All Might and Izuku’s relationship is one of the best written and touching I’ve ever had the chance to read, and let me tell you exactly why I think that. 

Izuku spent most of his life admiring All Might and identifying to him. There’s no such a thing he ignores about his heroic achievements. Even though he was quirkless, he looked up to him, so much he considered applying for UA, the high school where All Might went. What Izuku wants to do is ‘save people with a fearless smile’, just like All Might. His room is filled with All Might’s goodies, and kinda like us, Izuku spends time on the internet rambling about his idol and making theories about his eventual quirk. All Might has been present as an image in Izuku’s mind practically his whole life. However, like the rest of the population, he knows close to nothing about All Might’s previous life as Toshinori Yagi. All Might, because of the secret he’s carrying of One for All, is just known as All Might. In fact, his personal identity as Toshinori Yagi was almost lost when he became the Symbol of Peace. Only Gran Torino and his best friend Naomasa Tsukauchi know about his previous identity and are still kinda close to him. Well, only Tsukauchi is, and all the odds are they barely see each other at all outside of their work. All Might doesn’t have any family because of his status; those two are what are more close to a family to him. Despite being the strongest hero, All Might is alone. He’s carrying this burden by himself and hasn’t allowed anyone close to him, probably because he doesn’t have time to do so, because he does’t want to endanger anyone he might cherish, and because he knows about his fate more than anyone and didn’t want to establish any relationship that may have caused a lot of pain. Nana Shimura had an husband and a child; her husband was killed, and she separated herself from her kid because it was too much of a danger for them. After those tragedies, Nana was killed herself, and all the pain it must have caused All Might probably dissuaded him to get close to anyone. He raged against All for One, almost killed him and was barely killed himself. His health deteriorated, and Nighteye, his sidekick at the time, tried to persuade him to retire so he could prevent his foretold death. All Might refused and took his functions back, because what could he do other than that? Being the Symbol of Peace is all that there is about him, if he can’t be this strong pillar anymore, he can’t find any purpose and will be left with nothing but regrets. He left Nighteye and continued his duties, being more and more bitter about his health and how little he could do now. And then, he met this weird kid who stuck himself on his leg just so he could talk to him, and poured his heart out in front of him. And the first thing he did was rejecting him and telling him to give up. What were the odds for this kid to jump in shortly after in a situation where All Might himself was hesitating over? What were the odds for All Might to find his inspiration back because of this quirkless kid who made him remember who he was and why he was doing all of that? We often see how All Might changed Izuku’s life, but just consider how meeting Izuku has changed All Might’s life as well.

When they met, Izuku and All Might were both alone. Izuku as a quirkless kid rejected and denied by others, and All Might as the Symbol of Peace who couldn’t allow himself to be close to anyone. Sure, he was looking for a successor, but I’m not convinced someone else than Izuku could have inspired All Might so much, and give him another purpose in his life. Izuku keeps surpassing All Might’s expectations, and each time, All Might grows more and more fond of this boy who seemed so weak at first but is, in fact, more heroic than anyone. He’s genuinely impressed by Izuku, and keep discovering new sides to him. Their relationship clearly evolves through the manga and is becoming more and more personal and loving. Honestly, I’ve never seen such a beautiful relationship deprived from any struggle for authority and power. Izuku and All Might immediately bonded: after the Sludge incident All Might rushed to Izuku to apologize for making light of him, and finally tell him what’s gonna turn their lives upside down ’You can be a hero’. After that, Izuku spent ten months training under All Might’s supervision, and so they gradually became accustomed to each other. Izuku never lost his admiration for All Might, but because they’ve been hanging around and getting used to each other, they built up strong foundations for their relationship. The best way to get close to someone is spend time frequently with them. So even though it was presented to us through an ellipse, Izuku and All Might actually spent a lot of time together and were already pretty accustomed to each other since the beginning. I like that Hori made it that way so the rest of the story is used to unfold their relationship and how it grows up to be even more strong because the bases were already built since chapter two.

Even through that ellipse, we were shown some characteristics of All Might, like how careful, supportive and kind he is, and how much of a dork he can be. All Might is someone who is very gentle, and that’s probably what I like the most about him. He’s the strongest hero, so he could be intimidating if he wanted, but surprisingly, despite all the power and authority is in charge with, All Might is still very gentle and benevolent. He keeps praising Izuku, encouraging him and being amazed in front of him. And as things go on, All Might truly becomes a doting parent. Once Izuku was admitted to UA, he went to look at how things were going hidden behind a wall and thinking how cool Izuku was. In Ultra Archive, on Izuku’s presentation page, it’s All Might who’s doing the little commentary on him. And it’s just so cute, you can tell how fond he is of Izuku.

All Might truly cares about Izuku’s upbringing, and is doing his best to understand and answer what he needs. Because of that, All Might can make mistakes and fail as a proper teacher because he’s too preoccupied by Izuku’s well being and isn’t being fair and objective. All Might isn’t handling Izuku’s education perfectly, and he doesn’t have any issue admitting it and trying to improve, particularly about Izuku’s relationship with Bakugou. When I see All Might behaving like that, I truly wish he could be a model not only as a hero but as a parent as well. Like Inko Midoriya, All Might truly values Izuku and respects his decisions, while not agreeing on everything and taking time to talk with him about different issues they’re concerned with, because his opinions and thoughts are also important. They share and come to decisions together; if you take Todoroki and Endeavor’s relationship to compare, you’ll understand how important it is that Izuku and All Might are on equal grounds. After that, their relationship progressed steadily, and I’m not gonna comment all the times All Might was amazed by Izuku and his progression.

What I liked from the beginning is how there’s mutual affection and care in their relationship. Izuku also tries, in his own way, to protect All Might. At USJ, he knew All Might was actually injured and couldn’t keep up the fight. So even though it was dangerous and painful for him, he jumped in and protected his mentor. When All Might is known to be safe and sound, Izuku is sincerely relieved. 

It already didn’t matter that All Might wasn’t strong and perfect all the time; Izuku protected him and looked up to him anyway. It truly made me notice how much Izuku already valued All Might as an actual person and not just as his idol, and how it was opening up the path to a more family-oriented relationship. All those times where Izuku thought of All Might, wanted to talk to him about his improvements and share stories with were also a casual and daily way to build up their upcoming relationship as a Familial bond. 

What truly changed their relationship to what is it now was their reunion after the Kamino incident. All Might and Izuku met up, and All Might scolded Izuku for putting himself in danger once again. But then, he let him know he was relieved that Izuku was alright, and took him in his arms to comfort him. It’s such an intense, moving and heartbreaking scene to witness. As it was the end of All Might, it also truly was the rebirth of Toshinori Yagi pledging to take care of Izuku, to devote himself to him. His role now isn’t to take care of society anymore, to be a Symbol of Peace and a pillar. This All Might is no more. His role now is to take care of Izuku and nurture him, so of course their relationship just took a new turning point. This scene was so powerful, and probably made all of us cry from the pure distress, fear and love in there, it was overwhelming. So much emotions were colliding and making both of them cry as well. They were relieved they were alright and at the same time, they couldn’t help what was lost forever and fear the consequences awaiting for them.

After that, Toshinori meeting Inko Midoriya was such an heavy and intense scene where the two people who care the most about Izuku confronted about his future. It was amazing. It made Toshinori considered Izuku in a new light too. When Izuku brought the letter Kouta wrote to apologize and offer his thanks to him, Toshinori truly realized that Izuku had already become his own person who could find reward in what he had done by himself. This realization came with so much pride and admiration for Izuku I was myself astonished of how much Toshinori loves Izuku. He adores Izuku, and it’s so important for him to continue guiding him and being present in his life he actually did a dogeza in front of Inko Midoriya and offered his life as a counterpart. His pledge was so powerful Inko felt on her knees, because Toshinori was groveling on the ground and begging her so he could continue to nurture Izuku. This boy is so precious to him he offered his very own person. Not as a hero protecting society, but as a guardian, as a parent cherishing his child.  

After that, it kinda desolates Toshinori to be ’the one being protected’ now, but the man has done so much until now, he really deserves his rest. As this new father figure, it’s gonna be hard on Toshinori to just watch Izuku from afar and can’t do anything to help directly. But now that their relationship took this path, there are gonna be plenty of things for them to do as well. At first, Toshinori really need to open up to Izuku more because there are still a lot of things they need to talk about, and too often Izuku was left in the dark about some issues that disturbed him. The very existence of Mirio and the possibility there was for him to inherit One for All took aback Izuku; and this kind of situation already happened too often and it’s not a good thing. Once he learned that, Izuku was so preoccupied he did poorly in class, and in the end rushed after Toshinori to confront him about it. 

So there’s still plenty of room for their relationship to develop, particularly about Nana Shimura, Toshinori’s past, and his and Izuku’s future as well. It’s still pretty unclear what Toshinori’s fate will be from now on. Nighteye foresight told him he was to die a gruesome death, but all the moments Toshinori pledged he was planning to go on living, in front of All for One and Inko Midoriya, even after losing his powers, we can’t tell for sure what’s gonna happen. 

Toshinori was planning to die, to let go of his life and wasn’t afraid to do so once his duty was done. But then he met Izuku, and all of his plans changed suddenly. He couldn’t allow himself to die anymore because Izuku was here. And I’m not gonna pretend I have the precise words to tell exactly how beautiful this is. He’s not ready to die for Izuku; he’s ready to twist his fate and live for Izuku.

Izuku really became the reason for Toshinori to find a new purpose in life, and to actually hold on to his life. Their relationship is wonderful because it’s flawed and improving for that reason, and is overflowing of mutual affection and admiration. So I truly love their relationship. Toshinori is also my favorite grown up character of all times, because he still grows and improves, still meets people and changes path, still is an awkward and loving doting parent who wants nothing but the best for Izuku. He also shows that adulthood isn’t the end of the road, that making your dreams come true doesn’t mean you live happily ever after and your life’s interest kinda over. It’s important to convey it in a shonen such as BNHA; it makes you identify with older characters as well as you grow up, and proves that even if youthfulness is represented and idealized everywhere as ‘the most fun and important part of your life’, it’s not the only time you’ll be developing yourself, meet important people in your life and chose new paths and purposes for yourself. As you grow older, there’s still plenty of room for you to improve, change and take on new challenges. It doesn’t make you bitter about adulthood. How could you be bitter when you see such a dorky adult as Toshinori? Izuku surely truly isn’t, as their relationship can witness, and really, it’s no wonder why.

Ximena designs

   Ximena uses mostly it pronouns, but doesn’t mind female and male pronouns. Ximena constantly wants to get into fights, mischief, and trouble. It doesn’t like to make friends, but doesn’t mind having to use others to their advantage. When it doesn’t need to be careful or go undercover, they’ll gladly go in their favored form.

  For an universe like @thebbros, it would wear clothes since most like it would be seen as naked there in its favored form. If it needed to blend in, it would choose a female black rabbit form.

   I do have a funny thought of her trying to sneak her way into the circus by taking the form of one of the many baby bunnies and seeing if anyone notices the extra child. 

  I like making designs of characters and I like the idea of @thebbros so I thought what she might look like there.

  Ximena isn’t the type to flirt in order to help her take advantage of anything, it has a strange repulsion to love.

Wonder Woman is such a good movie. I think people in general have come to the consensus that it is currently the saving grace of the DCEU. But one question that’s still getting kicked around is “Is Wonder Woman (2017)  feminist?” It’s kind of an important question, given Wonder Woman’s role as a feminist icon over the years. But…it’s…kind of a hard question to answer? Let’s talk about it.

Once Upon a Time: Colin O'Donoghue Teases Hook and Emma's Happy Ending

There are plenty of heartfelt love stories on Once Upon a Time, but none of them quite compare to that of Captain Hook and Emma Swan. They may be in a predicament at the moment, but not even Gideon can come between true love. While the future of the show is still uncertain, we have hope that these two will find their way back to each other in the end. POPSUGAR had the opportunity to talk with Colin O'Donoghue, who was promoting his new film Carrie Pilby, and he reflected on how far his fan-favorite character has come over the years, what it’s like working with Jennifer Morrison, and what he thinks Hook’s happy ending might look like.

POPSUGAR: Hook has changed a lot over the past few seasons. What do you think is his most admirable quality?
Colin O'Donoghue: I mean, he’s a different character now. It’s probably that he’s redeemed himself and is trying to be the best person that he can be, which is a difficult thing to do, to overcome those demons for the better of not just himself, but for the better of the woman he loves and her family. However, I did love playing the villainous Hook. It’s always fun to get to play the bad guy.

PS: Hook and Emma are definitely one of the most beloved romances on the show. What is the best part about working with Jennifer Morrison?
CO: I’m lucky that Jen and I have got a fantastic relationship. We get on so well and it makes it easy to translate that into the characters. Jen is friendly with my family and my wife and all of that is very important. Sometimes when you come onto a show, you don’t know if that’s going to work or if the chemistry is going to be there, and we just have a laugh. That’s the most important thing is to enjoy what you do. We’re at ease working with each other, because if you have tension with someone, that translates on screen. Luckily, on Once Upon a Time, we get along so well, so it works.

PS: I know the show hasn’t been renewed for another season yet, but what do you think Hook’s happily ever after would look like?
CO: Hook’s happily ever after would just be getting an evening or night where both he and Emma can sit down and maybe have dinner or watch TV or have a glass of wine, because in Storybrooke, they literally never get a chance to do anything. As soon as anything slows down, you guarantee Grumpy is going to come running around the corner saying that some sort of curse is coming or there’s a giant snowman attacking the town. I think his happily ever after would just be a week’s worth of peace and quiet where they can be normal people. Maybe we’ll get to see that in the second half! That would be good.

How to research your racially/ethnically diverse characters

Do any of you have any tips for doing independent research for PoC characters?

This question is super broad, but I’m going to see if I can give it a crack!

First of all, consume media by the group in question. If you want to write a story with a Chinese-American protagonist, read some blogs by Chinese-Americans, read books by Chinese-Americans – both fiction and nonfiction – lurk on places like thisisnotchina so you can get a feel for what pisses Chinese and Chinese diaspora people off about their portrayal in the media, google for stereotypes about Chinese people and try to make sure you’re not doing those (even positive ones), go more general (East-Asian all-of-the-above in general since in many cases the harmful tropes overlap), go more specific (if your protagonist is female, look specifically for blog posts featuring the opiniosn of Chinese-American and other Asian/Asian diapora women; same if your protagonist is attracted to the same sex, is transgender, or deals with any other form of oppression besides anti-Chinese racism.) All of the above applies to Latinxs, Native Americans/Canadian First Nations, African/African diaspora people, Jews, Muslims, etc. Find out what we’re saying about ourselves.

Lots of things are available just from Google. “I have a Black character and I want to know what kind of hairstyles are available for her!” We have a Black hair tag, but apart from that, googling “Black hairstyles” will probably bring up some articles that can at least give you a good starting point to learn some vocabulary to add to your next Google search, like “natural” and “twists” and “dreadlocks.”

Next, you can talk to people in the group, but before you do this, be sure to have some specific questions in mind. “How do I write a Jewish character?” is not a specific question. “Do I have to make my Jewish character follow kosher laws if I’ve made her religious in other ways, or can she go to shul but not keep kosher?” or “What’s a term of endearment a parent might use for a child in Yiddish?” is much more specific. Remember, if you’re talking to someone they’re answering you back with their free time, so expecting them to do most of the work of figuring out what’s most important for you to know is a little entitled.

Besides, a more specific question will give you a more helpful answer. If someone asks me “how do I write a Jewish character” one of the first things out of my mouth will be a list of personality stereotypes to avoid, which isn’t going to be very helpful if what you really need for your fic was whether or not you have to write your character as following strict kosher laws.

If you’re sending a question in to a writing blog or one of those race blogs like thisisnot[whoever], please read through their tags and FAQ to see if they’ve already answered it. Longtime followers of a blog would get very bored if all the blog’s content was nothing but “We answered that here last week at this helpful link!” Those who participate in answering these blogs are usually unpaid volunteers who provide a resource that’s already there to help people; help repay them for what they do by looking through the material on your own first.

How to tell if a source from outside the group is biased and bigoted: obviously, you’re not going to want to listen to Stormfront about Jews, or the KKK about, well, anything. If you’re not on a source created by the group in question, look for dry and academic language as opposed to emotional, informal, or inflammatory words – although dispassionate and technical language is no guarantee it won’t be racist, colonialist, or inaccurate. If you read enough books and blogs from the inside, though, you’ll probably see some of the myths from those other sources debunked before you even encounter them.

Lastly, don’t assume that all people who are Asian, African-American Christians, religious Jews, or Muslims are from cultures more oppressive, more conservative, more patriarchal, more homophobic, more sexist, or more controlling than the one in which you were raised. If your plot calls for homophobic parents or a repressive culture, that shouldn’t be the reason you make your character one of the groups listed. There is plenty of oppressive, anti-woman, and anti-queer thought in white American Christian/Christian-cultured society and personally, I believe such criticisms of the marginalized diaspora peoples I listed above belong in the voices of the cultures themselves.

I’d not leave looking for dry and clinical information as the ONLY means to distinguish that a work is biased.

While yes it is pragmatic to say “look for academically toned wording,” … in addition to that, these folks really need to look into who the author is. Definitely look into the author. And the year the thing was published (because man if it’s from like the 60s or earlier, 9 times out of 10, throw that shit out).

Because people can disguise hatred and racism in careful diction so that it looks reasonable and polite. A shining example is physiognomy studies from Nazis and anti-Semite eugenecists. And the sad thing is, you really can’t trust people to read it and make the judgement call that this hate-in-disguise they’re reading is hate.  

Somehow, when someone says, “The people of the Levant express features such as […] which, at the risk of sounding untoward, suggest a very rodent-like persuasion,” people are like, “Oh, well, that was worded fancily and there was no angry or profane language, I suppose they’re right,” not stopping to think even for a moment that they just accepted that this book just said to them that Jews look like rats. I saw it happen in my Nazi Germany class when we were given reading material. It was fucking nuts.

So definitely, definitely look every outsider author in the mouth and cross-check any and everything that person says.

Also, be suspicious of blanket statements about a group such as “X group are” instead of discussing forces in X culture. For example. Because there’s going to be diversity within any group and it’s likely what’s being said isn’t inherently biologically linked to being in X group.

You have such a wonderful touch with color! Where do you get your inspiration for these super fun palettes? Any tips on How to Color Good©?

AHH thank you!!   I’m really bad about using smart correct ART terms for what I do lol so idk how useful any advice I give would be but

Main source of inspiration is just.. I really love colors lol.  Colors make me SO HAPPY and I guess using more = more happy lmao, that’s why most of my stuff is so saturated.

As far as character palettes go, what I do is figure out 3-4 dominant colors that fit the character and then make every other color compliment those colors.  For in-game characters I’ll eyeball the palette straight off the models and then alter each color so they work together a little better.  

In Photoshop I put every color on it’s own separate layer and then mess with the sliders in Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation on each individual color until I like it.  I might find one color I really like and alter the colors around it to compliment it. 

90% of what I do is push those sliders around until I like what I see. \o/  If you do this enough you’ll start to passively learn what colors feel best together and against each other.  I’ve been doing it for yeeears. 

Sometimes even if I like a color it’s good to slide it around anyway to see if I can make a stronger or more interesting palette.

Most of my stuff is very saturated and rainbowy because I LIKE EVERY COLOR and every color can work together if you mess around with it enough lol

Design is important but the colors you use should be part of the story too.  Color should always make you feel something because color speaks!  Sometimes it’s very soft and sometimes it’s very loud, but it’s like the music that goes along with the narration.  It sets the atmosphere of a piece. 

I LOVE using limited palettes too, though.  Limiting my colors to just 3-4 forces me to tell the story more clearly because I can’t rely on colors to make certain things obvious.  Makes me think a lil different because layers and opacity can turn few colors into many.  

I usually only use limited palettes for comic/storytelling stuff, otherwise I make everything rainbow lol COLOR MAKES ME SO HAPPY and I wanna share that happiness!

The Galra in ‘Belly of the Weblum’ is Keith’s Mom.

Reasons:

1. Although the character has he/him pronouns assigned, the idea of characters not being the gender that they are assumed, specifically females assumed to be male, has already been explored with Pidge. Possible foreshadowing?

2. The character doesn’t speak. Although this could mean something else, I feel like it’s a point made that if this character were to speak, we would think differently of the Galran. In this show, female-coded characters  are given a large spectrum of body types (which is WONDERFUL, by the way), but they almost always have feminine voices, unless the species has very altered/distorted speech. 

3. The figure of this character is VERY feminine. Although female anatomy is very explored in this show, it’s not so much with male. Although it would be WONDERFUL to have a curvy guy in this show, I don’t think this is the case. This Galra has a similar figure to Allura- the most traditionally feminine character in the show. Take a look: 

Look at that. That’s nearly hourglass. That screenshot could easily be defended, though. I think this one is the most overt:

This pose emphasized femininity completely. Look at the curves in the legs, the lack of muscle in the thighs. Although armor in this show tends to be bulky over the chest, it does seem like there slightly more to the chest, implying breasts (though many alien species in the show do not have females with breasts, the Galra are shown strongly as humanoid mammals, so I would assume that female Galra have breasts.) And the crotch- if you’ve taken a drawing class, that is not the way you draw male crotches. The show might just be downplaying genitalia- but to do that, they usually tend to have bulky armor or baggy clothes around the crotch, not just completely smooth it out. This is a very flat look- not masculine at all. Again, we’re working with a show that has progressive body types and ALIENS, for chrissake, so who’s to say. 

4. Keith’s mom is most likely the one who gave him his knife. And it’s a rebellion knife- this character is odd because, why would a singular Galra be off by themselves, in what appears to be a small aircraft, in a place as dangerous as a Weblum. If anything, Galran’s don’t appear to like being seperated. They don’t like independence. They create operations. They have slaves. They harvest. They don’t send singular people to do anything. So what was a lone Galra doing? Well, a rebel force wouldn’t have the need or supplies to send off a single Galra to collect resources. I think Keith’s mom is a traitor- her reasoning for being on Earth. I think she was with the rebellion for awhile but eventually ended up on Earth, somehow. And, that Galra steals from Keith, but doesn’t attack him or alert the empire to where he is- I think at this point in time, Keith’s mother is alone with no connections. She has no idea what to do, but she need’s fuel for her aircraft to get somewhere. Wouldn’t any other Galra who was stranded, and happened to find two Paladins of Voltron, immediately alert the empire?

I’m not sure, but I think it’s heavily implied. 

My Method for Contacting Pop-Culture Spirits

As the title says, this is simply how I go about contacting pop-culture spirits. This isn’t the only way to meet them and there’s definitely easier, safer, and more efficient ways to do this.

Intro

Many people might not believe that pop-culture characters can become spirits but I’m of the opinion that anything can have a spirit, no matter its origins nor form. All it takes is belief and energy. It is my UPG that pop-culture spirits (PC spirits) are formed by the energy that humans put into them when consuming the media that they are a part of. All of the fanart, fanfiction, and even just conversing or thinking about them lends them the power that they need to form into egregores. Extremely popular characters like Pikachu or Mario can become extremely powerful egregores and even godforms.

Since a lot of their energy comes from multiple sources they are influenced by a lot of people's’ perceptions of them. That is to say that it is very possible for two people to meet the same PC character spirit but have them behave differently. Sometimes they’ll act a bit differently or even contradict their canon personality if the belief in them being different is strong enough. For example, Flandre Scarlet from Touhou has two major personalities that the fandom has flanderized her as ascribed to her: excitable child who can’t control her powers or sadistic murderer. If one were to call the PC spirit of Flandre while being of the belief that she is Flandre the murderer, then most likely they’ll meet the aspect of the PC spirit that has the qualities of the murderer. Likewise, if someone believed that she is Flandre the child then they are more likely to meet the aspect of her PC spirit that is Flandre the child.

I’m not 100% sure why this can happen but I think it’s because of belief and subconscious…things. Belief is the basis for a lot of magical paths and that applies to spirit work too. One’s belief of how a spirit “should” behave will influence how they behave, especially with PC spirits which are easily molded by human belief due to their nature. So when a lot of people believe that a PC spirit should behave a certain way due to their canon or popular fanon interpretations, then the spirit will more likely conform to those beliefs. Even if one doesn’t fully believe in one interpretation of the character, if they know of and have that interpretation in the back of their mind when meeting the PC spirit, then it’s possible that their subconscious will influence how the spirit appears.

If you want to meet a PC spirit that isn’t influenced by your preconceived notions then you’ll need to learn how to cut out all of your mental noise. It’s not an easy task and it isn’t even necessary. Your influence on how the spirit behaves isn’t a bad thing and even if you were to stop your influence, everyone else’s beliefs are still exerting on the spirit. Unless you have a specific goal in mind when working with the spirit then you really don’t need to worry about your influence on them. Especially because, even though I just spent the last few paragraphs talking about the contrary, the spirit will most likely behave as their canon/lore dictates as your belief in a different behavior isn’t strong enough to override that.

Since I haven’t seen too much info about pop-culture spirits out there, I wanted to discuss these experiences that I’ve had. But, basically, just keep an open mind on how the spirit will behave if you don’t want to influence them too much with your preconceived notions. And if you don’t agree with any of this then feel free to ignore everything I just said! These are just my beliefs after all.    

For this post I will outline my procedure for contacting any pop-culture spirit while also provided a specific example in italics of me using this method to contact a PC spirit of one of my favorite pokemon, scolipede. This is so that it may be easier for someone to follow the procedure.

Safety

Despite being human made, PC spirits can pose a threat to your well being just like all spirits. Some safety basics are: be able to ward, banish, and cleanse and don’t call characters who are dangerous according to lore if you don’t think you’ll be able to handle them. Just like when calling local spirits into your home, I would recommend constructing a circle to help protect yourself from harm. You can read more about the basics of circle-making on that post [link].

Another thing is that if you want to add more punch to your banishing, use banishing materials that you know the character doesn’t like. For example, if the character doesn’t like bread, get a bag of bread and throw it at them if you need to banish them. A comical example, yes, but the concept is still something that should be considered when making banishing tools.

Malignant spirits can also have a field day with impersonating PC spirits. We’re much more inclined to trust a character spirit than some random spirit, especially if that character is a hero or cute. Be real, how many of you would be suspicious of an adorable pikachu spirit that showed up in your house one day? Well now I’m telling you to be suspicious until you are able to discern whether or not the spirit is actually what it appears as. When doing the call, you can prevent any malignant spirits from sneaking in by having the room that you’re working in warded. Of course, it should always be warded if you’re planning on doing spirit work, I’m just telling you one of the reasons “why” that is so. A sneaky spirit might still be able to hijack the call and impersonate the character so just keep on your toes.

For safety, I read up on scolipede’s canon info so that I am acutely informed about the spirit before calling it. I then use energy work to check the stability of my wards, making sure that everything is active and that there are no weak or damaged parts. The energy barrier on my window is cracked so I patch with new energy (more specifically, I put etheric duct tape over the cracks xP). If I were in a house rather than a dorm room, I would reinforce the wards with protections that don’t allow any spirit that I call to access the rest of the house. This would be helpful if the spirit turns malicious for their range and any damage that they do would be concentrated to only one room.

Materials

An image, symbol, or sigil representing the entity that you wish to call. It’d be best to use an official image rather than fanwork or personal drawings but you can still use those if you have to. You can also write their name out if you lack the ability to print or draw. You could even bring up the image on your phone or computer but this runs into the problem of there being a lot of “background noise” that might make it harder to connect with them. Also you will need to make sure that your device does not shut off in the middle of the evocation. You can cleanse the image if you want to remove anything that’s not the character that might be attached to it.

An offering for the entity. Depending on who you call, they might not want an offering but I think it’s best to be prepared just in case. Generic offerings like water, food, or incense would most likely work but if you know of anything that the character likes, such as a particular kind of food or something to do with their favorite color or whatever, then that would be better! Obviously avoid giving them anything that you know that they won’t like. Offerings can also be things like fanart, fanfiction, or even just playing their theme song if they have one! Indulging in their media makes them more powerful after all.

Banishing tools that you are prepared to use if the spirit becomes hostile, any materials that you use for your circle, and any tools that you need for communication.

For my materials I use an official image of scolipede that I bring up on my phone. I change my phone’s settings so that it will give me enough time to talk with the spirit before going to sleep. I use my lily-of-the-valley as my offering for it is poisonous and I believe that the poison-type scolipede would be able to draw power from it. For banishing equipment, I keep flying devil oil and fire salts on hand. Scolipede is weak to fire-type moves so I think fire-based tools would be effective in banishing if something goes wrong. I do not use any objects or tools for my circle or for communication because I personally don’t need them.  

The Procedure

1) Set up your preparations. Place the image and offering next to each other and in front of you. Construct your circle so that both things are outside of it. Have your banishing and communication tools in the circle with you.

2) Focus on the image and say the call. The call can really be anything you want but here’s a basic template that I use:

“I call to [Character’s Name], [Character’s Title (Optional)] of [Story’s setting/Character’s birthplace (optional)] from [Name of work]. I invite you to come talk to me and so that I may give you [Offering].

That’s a bit cluttered so here’s some filled in examples:

“I call to Mudkip, the Mud Fish Pokemon of the Hoenn region from Pokemon. I invite you to come talk to me and so that I may give you an offering of water.”

“I call to Pyroar from Pokemon. I invite you to come talk to me and so that I may give you an offering of fire.”

If you want to get more direct and specific, you can add in more details such as relationships with other characters and other things. It’s up to you whether this makes the call more effective or unnecessarily cumbersome.

“I call to Remilia Scarlet, The Scarlet Devil and older sister of Flandre Scarlet from the Scarlet Devil Mansion of Gensokyo of Touhou Project.”

So yeah, like I said the call can really be anything you want. However, make sure that the words you use are not forcing the spirit to come to you. You “invite”, you “request”, you “ask”. It might seem silly but sometimes the little things can make all the difference. I like the first example that I gave the best but what you choose is up to you.

3) Talk with the spirit and give them the offering! Now in my experience, I’ve never had a PC spirit not show up. At most they showed up and then immediately left. I suspect that this has something to do with our relationships to them and roles as their creators. HOWEVER, do not take this as a guarantee that they’ll show up. I don’t know of the factors affecting you when you do this call and anything that goes down with you and your experience is completely separate from me and my experience.

4) Say goodbye. If you are ready to say goodbye and they haven’t already left on their own then you can let them know that you’re ready for them to depart:

“[Character name], thank you for coming but it is now time for you depart. Please leave respectfully and in peace.”

If they don’t leave, throw out your demands and your commands, be forceful. If they still don’t leave, banish them.

Now this all probably seems awfully over formal, especially for calling little pokemon spirits and the like, because it is, in a way. You could totally give the spirit a “hey man I’m tired, is it alright if you left now?” However, I think starting out formal and then shifting to casual when you’re more comfortable with spirit work is helpful. It gets you in the mindset for spirit work time. It also helps teach you the “proper” and “respectful” ways of doing things so that when you do deviate from them, you can do so without being disrespectful for you understand the fundamentals.

5) Cleanse! If you feel the need to, cleanse after the spirit has left. If you had to force the spirit out then definitely cleanse but even if nothing bad happened, scan the room anyway just to see if you maybe should.

I set the lily-of-the-valley next to my phone which already has the picture of Scolipede brought up. I step away from it so that I may construct my circle, calling upon the four elements and my gods. Beside me are the banishing tools and my laptop so that I may listen to instrumental music that will help me focus in addition to using it for typing up notes on the encounter. I clear my mind by going into a light meditative state and then focus on the image of Scolipede. “I call upon Scolipede, the Megapede Pokemon of the Unova region of Pokemon. I invite you to come talk to me and so that I may give you an offering of Lily-of-the-Valley which will help boost your poisonous power,” I say in my mind rather than out loud. As I do so, I direct my thoughts at the image.A scolipede appears beside my phone. I see him in my mind’s eye, he doesn’t physically manifest (and neither will any spirit that you call). He greets me using telepathy, “Scolipede! Scolipede!” I forgot to specify that I would like a spirit that can speak english in the call. Most pokemon spirits that I’ve met can’t. However, when I ask him if he can speak english, he does so. Our chat is short: he tells me that I didn’t provide enough of the offering for it to be a useful power boost but he likes my room. When we finish talking I say to him, “Scolipede, thank you for coming but it is now time for you to depart. Please leave respectfully and in peace.” He says his goodbyes and then leaves through the image of him on my phone. I close my circle and put my tools away.  

Final Notes

Despite being a pretty simple procedure you must remember all of the other things that go into it. You should be able to ward, banish, construct a circle, discern the presence of a spirit, discern the identity of a spirit, and be comfortable in your communication methods to say the least. That might seem like a lot to a beginner but the only way to really gain those skills is through practice! And guess what? This right here is a good way to practice ^^. Calling things like magikarps or weak mooks from other video games can be a safe way to start gaining that experience needed for calling stronger spirits. (If you start calling to magikarps pls tell me. I want to read about all the magikarp spirits XD)

While working with PC spirits, especially ones that are friendly in canon, can be a safer way to get into spirit work, never forget that they are still spirits and they can still do you harm. Also, do not call a spirit just for the sake of calling them. If you want to practice, then call them but make sure they are rewarded for their time and energy and chat with them, if they’re up for it. Don’t keep calling the same spirit if they have made it clear that they don’t want to work with you or be called anymore (w/ pokemon it’s a little different cause there’s more than one but yeah you get what I mean). Along that note, don’t assume that all spirits who come want to work with you. Some just want a quick meal, others maybe want to chat, but that doesn’t mean that they want to be your friend or that they’re obligated to help or associate with you in anyway.

So, has anyone noticed yet that not a single one of the current live-action Disney Channel shows has an all white cast?

Like, for real, all of them have at least two or more main characters that are POC, and all of them have at least two main characters that are a WOC…

So, like while Disney shows might not all be the most quality shows, I think they do deserve some credit for this… Because it’s pretty cool to me.

Top 10 British Sitcoms! (In my personal opinion)

1) Father Ted (1995 - 1998)

What’s funnier than a bunch of bizarre priests and their clumsy housekeeper who loves tea? Well, barely anything. Hence why this is my number one.

Father Ted is one of those comedy shows that always seems to be on a channel somewhere, and no matter the episode, I’ll end up roaring with laughter. I adore this show on a magical level, and it’s definitely hard to top.

2) Blackadder (1983 - 1989)

Rowan Atkinson at his finest. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Mr Bean, but Blackadder is just spectacular. Fast paced, sarcastic and hilarious, it’s another show that I can always just pick up and burst out laughing at. One of the most interest aspects of the show though is the different era per series, however keeping the same amazing cast. Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Tony Robinson’s characters also having a special place in my heart due to the antics and hilarity. 

3) Fawlty Towers (1975 - 1979)

The quintessential British comedy sitcom. I don’t want to say too much about this, because if you have never seen it, shame on you.

4) Black Books (2000 - 2004)

Quite simply one of the greatest, but shortest, sitcoms ever created. Anyone who has actually seen this show has regarded it as one of their favourites of all time for good reason. Black Books follows the character of Bernard Black, the owner of a shoddy and sticky bookshop, and lacks all regard or care for people. The majority of the comedy is derived from Bernard’s two ‘friends’ who attempt to make his lifestyle more socially acceptable, much to his despair. I truly recommend checking out this show, but be prepared to be annoyed that there isn’t more!  

5) Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em (1973 - 1978)

Probably one of the favourite comedy shows I watch with my Grandfather. Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em follows the character of Frank, a childish, often moronic and insanely clumsy individual who only wants best for his family, although all he does is infuriate and anger people. A show with amazing catchphrases and hilarious situations, I simply adore this show.

6) Dads Army (1968 - 1977)

An amazing comedy focused on the Home Guard during the Second World War, the Home Guard were the volunteer army of those deemed ineligible for military service, usually due to age. The majority of the comedy derives from the pure uselessness of the group, and their lack of contribution to the war effort. The humour is often subtle and hilarious, I’d recommend it to anyone, I love it.

7) Porridge (1974 - 1977)

Ronnie Barker was one of the penultimate lords of comedy, that is all.

Porridge follows the goings on in the prison HMP Slade, following the character of Fletcher and his cellmate, an inmate serving his first sentence who Fletcher takes under his wing. The characters are strong and well written, as well as having amazing comedic timing and execution. The majority of the comedy comes from the interactions between the prisoners, as well as their relationships to the guards. It’s a show with a lot of heart and a lot of fun. 

8) Red Dwarf (1988 - ?)

Sci-Fi and sitcom, a bizarre genre hybrid that was an amazing gamble, but alas paid off incredibly well for Red Dwarf. The show follows the interesting cast of characters aboard the ‘Red Dwarf’ ship, all of whom are odd and interesting in their own ways. Unfortunately, I would not do the show justice if I were to attempt to describe the plot, so I shall urge you to check it out yourself. Trust me when I say this is an amazing show though.

9) Only Fools And Horses (1981 - 2003)

One of the longest running and most popular sitcoms in Britain, for good reason might I add. The show primarily follows the family of Del-Boy, Rodney and their Granddad (who is later replaced by Uncle Albert due to the unfortunate passing of the actor). The show is set in Peckham, a district in the south east of London, known for it’s working class citizens, the comedy mainly deriving from the vast array of occurring characters, as well as Del-Boy’s constant attempts of quick-rich schemes, with his main catchphrase being, “this time next year, we’ll be millionaires”. The show is a lot of fun, and the characters are all well written and performed and it has truly earned its cemented place as being one of the best in British history. 

10) Outnumbered (2007 - 2014)

Literally the most hilarious ‘family’ in Britain. Holy crap, I adore this show. The show is centred around a middle-class family who live in West London, the parents of whom, are ‘outnumbered’ by their 3 children. Jake, the typical teen, Ben, the hyperactive and strange child, and Karen, the oddly sarcastic child with a lot of questions, and a lot of answers. 
In essence, it’s a great show with hilarious situations, Karen and Ben being the funniest and most interesting parts of the show in all honesty. Even though it’s number 10 in my list, it’s amazing and I think everyone should attempt to watch this show.

The Fundamentals of Character Development: Cornerstones

Developing characters is one of my favorite parts of any story, and is perhaps the most important- if your readers like your characters enough, they’ll be more willing to watch them be dragged through some hellish plots. I know for certain that there are some characters I love so much, I’d be willing to read about them organizing their closet.

There are plenty of methods to develop characters, and the key is finding the one that works for you. However, the cornerstone/pillars method is my personal favorite. I’ll cover cornerstones here, and pillars on a later post.
