i may be doing a bit of liveblogging

“If I could, begin to be
Half of what you think of me
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love

When I see, the way you act
Wondering when I’m coming back
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love like you.”

Welp, that’s it folks. The end of season one.

Long ago, the four Crystal Gems lived together in harmony. But then, everything changed when Homeworld attacked.

Pearl is lost and defective. Amethyst is an overcooked runt. Garnet is two smol lesbians in an overcoat.

Peridot fucked off to Canada or something. Jasper and Lapis are in a hate fusion boiling at the bottom of the ocean. Yellow Diamond is gonna be missing her ship…

Life for Steven Universe has changed forever. Nothing will ever be the same.

10/10, absolutely a 10/10. I’m have trouble deciding if this is my number one or not, but … we’ll see. I’m gonna give it some time to stew and also watch it a couple dozen more times and download that song onto every device I own.

I’m so excited for what the future holds for us. I have no idea where we’re going from here, but this opens up so many possibilities it’s ridiculous. So many more questions, so many new gems, so many new feels. I can’t wait.

I’m going to take the next week to chill a bit. I’m gonna watch the Pilot, Uncle Grandpa, and I think there may be some shorts coming up? Those might be later, I’m not sure. Anyway, the next week should be pretty easy going. I can see that my inbox is slammed, so I’m probably gonna hold off on asks and do those tomorrow. I’ve also got a tiny little something planned if I can figure out a way to do that. So I’ll see you tomorrow for a big ole’ ask pile!

See ya then!~

Episode 2 opens with Wakaba, who gets a raw deal in this story - she is here to play the archetype of the plain friend, but nobody has moves like her.

Touga wishes he could vogue like that.

Wakaba also has a direct line to the original author, divine Sophia herself. Look who wrote that book!

Wakaba can still hear the echoes of the story as it was, before the demiurge Ikuhara arrived to carry out his series of exacting compromises.

We move on to Touga’s elevator speech.  He has practiced it in front of a mirror – you know he has.

Now everyone who is unwise enough to enter an elevator with him knows exactly what the game’s about.

The speech is as follows: “If a chick cannot break its shell, it will die without being born. We are the chick.  The world is our egg.  If we do not break the world’s shell, we will die without being born. Smash the world’s shell – for the revolution of the world.”

So the point of the game is to grow up, and to grow up, you will have to destroy the structure that surrounds you.  As a metaphor it is clear as day, as long as you already know the answer.   It appears silly and arbitrary at first, and then fades into the background as it is repeated and repeated, until you accept it as part of the arcane rulebook of the world, and only at the last minute do you realize that it was a simple thing, all along, a simple instruction, and that nobody followed it, because they were too busy building harder and more complicated metaphors.

The speech is a title drop – the first time the world “revolution” is used – and in its silly seriousness and its obfuscatory clarity it is a tonal synecdoche for the whole dang show. It is very important, and Touga has no idea why.  The structure that surrounds him, the one that he’s supposed to smash, is designed for his benefit, and envelops him in a cloud of privilege that is invisible to him. There is no way he is going to smash that shell.  He is a Princeton undergrad quoting Marx to get girls.

Except he is in high school, and Utena is in middle school.  This is a useful fact to hang on to, as things progress.

Same, Roy. Same.

I completely forgot Mustang asked Grumman for help, separate from whatever is going on with Christmas. Grumman has had such a minuscule role in the show so far, I have no idea what to think of him, nor do I know what the relationship is between him and Roy. But if Roy trusts him, even in the wildly corrupt environment of Central, then I do too.

But it seems we’ll still be in the dark for a while, because we’ve got a scene transition to…

Ed and Al going to the library in hopes of finding something on the special techniques shown by May Chang. They don’t even know it was Alkahestry, so the search might be a bit tough.

I know it’s unlikely, but I sincerely hope we see Sheska here. She’s the sort who loves libraries.

Well, maybe I was off mark a bit - Pearl was certainly in love with Steven’s dead mom, but she was also infatuated with her to a point of obsession.

I have to wonder - were the feelings mutual? How did Rose handle this? Did she reciprocate? Did she try to dampen Pearl’s affection? Did she string her along?

I wonder if Rose saw Pearl as a great friend, and because of that decided to share her secrets with Pearl - and Pearl, in turn, saw this as confirmation of Rose returning her feelings. Or it could be that Rose shared this with Pearl because she returned Pearl’s affection. Or, honestly, it could be plenty of other scenarios, but I still have to wonder.

Listening to Pearl talk about Rose is a bit unnerving. She has Rose held on this untouchable pedestal; Rose, to her, could do no wrong. And she was her right-hand man! Pearl totally didn’t invest all of her self worth in her relationship with Rose, that would be absurd.

Again, I have to wonder how devoted Rose was to Pearl in return. It would be awfully sad to see Pearl seemingly give her all to Rose, while Rose may have been very blasé about it - I mean, she did end up with Greg, after all.

What’s… going on here? I noticed Amethyst acting a bit somber during Pearl’s lecture, but… I took it as her acting serious to respect the serious subject matter. There’s something else going on here. Upon doing a quick re-watch of that scene, I think… She’s taking the “Gems wanted to do something bad to Earth” bit personally!!???

I have asked myself what the Crystal Gems were like before they were Crystal Gems. I may find I regret asking.

the place she goes to meditate…the place her girlfriend brought her tea…

even when asami’s not with her, she is
