the situation on bts’ colorism in the japanese magazine

this is a long post, however i believe theres lots to understand on this subject that cannot be dismissed. i have two disclaimers: first, please read until the end before criticizing because when i say i made an effort to include all views i mean it. second, there will be hetero references in this since the interview was about their ideal girl.. i apologize n i dont mean to assume their sexuality or anything.

there are three main parts to this; 1) lets understand the whole picture, 2) be fair and 3) for those who were hurt by the “interview” and to those who want to dismiss them (this is not patronizing, i really fucking sympathize here)

lets understand the whole picture

to begin, I’m pretty much positive they didn’t actually interview bts for the magazine… rather, they drew on old interviews for the magazine… i don’t think the members were actually involved in any way with this magazine specifically. there a few posts about this and i’ll like them, but the best was by @jkguks. they showed how each exact response was recycled from an old interview. the post can be found here. comments have also been made that this magazine is known for such moves in the past and that their credibility isn’t so great. @allforbts pointed out here that the magazine didnt have a photoshoot – they reused pictures from other sources – which probably indicates they didn’t have an actual interview; however this isn’t real evidence. in my own personal opinion i dont trust the person who posted the translations on twitter. yes the translations are correct as far as we all know, but what i mean is… i think she knew the interview was old/reused. everyone that asked about the interview’s date received no response from her. she even made a comment about how many followers shes gained. if she cleared up that the interview was old or reused then this whole thing would die out n she’d stop getting followers. anyway i find it suspicious but i could also just be reading too far into it. the whole point of this is that at this point we can pretty much conclusively say that the interview is recycled n this is not something they said recently. this is not to devalue the weight of their words because it still hurt a lot of people. old or new, getting told your skin color is “unideal” is painful. however we do wanna look at this because we at least now know that their status of “since educated on colorism and racism and now pretty pc/sensitive” is not going to be revoked! they’ve since educated themselves, that is still the truth. this is just the ugly past come to rear its head.

on the other end of understanding the whole picture, i’m going to make a sorta controversial statement. hopefully in fully explaining it, you all will get the full idea… but for the sake of k-armys who are getting attacked by intl fans constantly and also for the sake of perspective – which may lessen the blow of their words for those hurt by them – i need to say this. the concept of colorism is alive and well in korea… it just isn’t the same as it is in the west. in the west – for the most part – we are more ethnically/racially diverse while korea is almost entirely racially/ethnically homogeneous. so how does this effect the meaning of colorism? well because one of the largest identifiable traits when looking at the differences between the world’s races n ethnicities is skin color, race/ethnicity will always be tied to skin color, especially in really diverse areas. in the west where we are consistently exposed to different races/ethnicities as part of our daily lives, a preference of skin color holds not only colorist implications but also racist implications. if some mayo dude said “i think darker skin is ugly on girls” we can safely assume hes a racist fuck on top of being colorist. however, since korea is homogenous, there isnt any real racist implications. let me elaborate: korea has issues with being racist against other poc, however in an interview discussing ideal types where the ideal type is already assumed to be at the very basis korean (or maybe another east asian ethnicity if you’re stretching it), the statement on skin color is directed at people of their shared race. so how is this less problematic? it is still problematic definitely – i’d like to make this clear – but in korea, the concept of skin color amongst koreans as a beauty standard isnt racially or ethnically motivated and therefore its more akin to saying “i prefer blue eyes over brown eyes on white girls” because they’re discussing a physical variance within their own race. in the end, it’s still colorist, but please try to understand that in korea the remarks arent as horrible. they still shouldn’t say that, and really, any discussion of skin color preferences is ugly, but it’s extremely important to be considerate of korean culture. intl fans forget constantly that we are guests to korean culture. if you were invited to someones house you wouldnt bust in there feeling entitled n doing whatever the fuck you want. you’d try and respect their rules and how they run their home. if you had a problem with something there, you’d politely ask them to accommodate you, explaining why that accommodation was necessary. you wouldnt fucking trash them for not having their house already equipped to your preference. thats incredibly selfish. this is the same way. you are guests to this culture, and while you shouldnt allow colorism to continue, this theme of entitlement amongst intl fans – especially when we have done very little to respect their culture; we demand they understand ours while continually paying theirs no regard – is really shamefully. i ask that people reading this do their best to be more considerate in the future. not everything is black n white… lots of things have grey area and we can afford to be more socially conscious. im pretty sure most k-fans have it about up to here dealing with koreaboos criticizing their culture…

be fair

this is a short statement but i need to remind you all that most of the members were problematic in that interview and if you are only trashing namjoon you need to fucking stop. you are allowed to offended, of course – i was pretty bothered too seeing how im the opposite to namjoons ideal in every way, my bias who i’d fucking die for – but if your whole focus is “namjoon this and namjoon that” than youre being a biased ass and im gonna need you to sit down. if youre going to be mad, by all means, be mad, but dont fucking pretend the other members said nothing wrong. im sick of people pretending every member but namjoon is perfect and unproblematic. present day he’s probably the most un-problematic member since educating himself on racial issues, feminism, n lgbtq rights, making himself an advocate for them all while idols remain silent…. hmm…. but keeping pushing that “problematic member” agenda sure. yeah lets pretend the facts dont exist ok

for those who were hurt by the “interview” and to those who want to dismiss them

fans who read through the interview n realized they kinda fit their bias’ ideal type – esp in terms of skin color – please don’t make comments on how people need to “get over this”. for many fans, especially non light skinned poc, this really hurt. not only as a “i don’t fit my bias’ ideal type” but also as a betrayal of trust. many non light skinned poc have experienced some type of discrimination for their skin color and many had their sense of self confidence fucked over for it. its not just a “you dont think darker skin is beautiful, aw :(” its more of a, “you are someone i love and support and the fact that you’d call my skin color less attractive – the skin color for which i’ve had to struggle to find my own confidence in – just like so many others, feels like betrayal”. its really hurtful. so don’t be dismissive. you don’t understand. this isnt your discussion, im sorry.

and lastly, to the fans who were hurt by the interview. im sorry boo. im sorry that the industry you support continues to hurt you. im sorry someone you decided to love and support made you feel like that. please remember that the ideal type is such a flimsy concept. they really dont mean anything. those questions were grossly specific n they were so unnecessary, but at the end of the day, they are still made up preferences. the boys wouldn’t find you unattractive for not meeting the bits on their checklist – fuck no. attraction just doesnt work like that. no one falls in love with the person that hit everything on their little “ideal type” checklist. honestly, if you asked me to describe my ideal type n i just listed shit off the top of my head, it probably wouldnt add up to namjoon…. but in every way namjoon perfect to me. im fucking whipped. this is the same. dont take their ideals to heart, dont feel like anything on you needs to change. you are exactly the way you need to be, and dont ever let some guys “ideal type” make you feel any less. n if anyone every tries to tell you that you’re failing to meet their beauty standards… fucking kick them. fcuk them seriously. dont let this shit effect your self confidence. gross comments like that dont deserve a thought in your head

“Oh my god, Ems, I think Robin and Regina are getting it on in your room.”

She jumped at the sound of Ruby’s voice yelling in her ear over the sound of the music, then let out a whiny groan.

“Gross, on my bed?” she asked, disgusted at the thought of having to wash her linens before sleeping in them. She was buzzed enough to enjoy the atmosphere but not enough to let her friends fuck in her apartment. “Ugh, let me go stop them before I have to light my mattress on fire.”

Her movements were stilted and she stumbled a little as she walked down her hall. Sure enough, her door was shut and a sock hung from the knob. Her fist banged on the wood.

“Don’t you guys fucking dare! Go to your own apartments for this shit or I’m never inviting you over again. This isn’t college,” she shouted. A muffled grunt that sounded sort of like an apology came from the other side and she figured she’d leave and at least give them a few minutes to collect themselves.

“Emma! Where’s the beer?”

The question came from her brother who was currently losing (horrendously) at beer pong to Elsa, who had surprising accuracy for someone who was drunker than most people in the room.

“Uh, we’re out. I was about to go walk to the convenience store around the corner to get some more.”

anonymous asked:

How did you become a Reaper76 shipper? Was it someone's influence or you thought "Wow, they're HOT together!" by yourself?

Gather around children and let me tell you with the help of an unnecessary long post and answer, of how I came to be a reaper76 shipper…

(I honestly had to think long and hard on this ask bc I was also curious on how this came to be.)

During the Overwatch “beta” - or pre-beta so to speak (this was before I even drew or even new the lore of the game. Tumblr wasn’t even on my mind then) I immediately fell in love with the character Reaper bc he was mysterious and scary and all that good stuff, and I’m sure I’m not the only one that felt the same. I didn’t really ship him with anyone at that point. But after getting more involved in the development of the game I actually started shipping him with Mercy, and at some point Widow (mind you that Soldier:76 wasn’t even announced yet.)

But I got kind of bored of it, of the game in general. And it wasn’t even out yet! So I took a break from it. Until the day when new characters came out that rekindled my interest once more. Soldier: 76 was one of the new heroes, plus I think at that point they’ve told us all the hero’s backstories. That’s when I got to know that Reaper was ones Gabriel Reyes and Soldier: 76 was Jack Morrison, and they where ones good friends through the SEP and during the early days of Overwatch, where Gabe was the one leading the team that won the first omnic war.

I didn’t really think much about their past relationship after that. I was still fond of Reaper and I wanted to know more of his backstory. So I watched a lot of Overwatch gameplays and news channels about the game during my spare time. Hoping for some more lore or news about our favorite edge lord or the game in general. And that’s when I heard a lot of talk about Tumblr. So I checked it out. And I found a lot of art in the Overwatch tag that showed people shipping Reaper and Soldier together. I was like “hm, I haven’t really thought about that”. I started thinking about their backstories and I saw reasons why people shipped them. That’s when I grew more fond of them both. There was a lot of angst and fluff I went through, and I fell more and more in love with their story and the characters and the possibility that they could be a pair. And since I had a fondness to making comics I started to make some of my own.

And so I ended up here on Tumblr. And I don’t regret it. ❤

CHAPTER THREE

The loud purr of the engine woke her this time. Emma opened her eyes to see light streaming through the windshield below. There was a little crick in her neck, and she stretched as far as she could, yawning. Then she shimmied around and dropped down into the main area of the cab. Jones was once again nowhere to be seen, but it was a bright, sunny morning, the sun reflecting off the snow lying on the berm of the road and the wet asphalt.

Emma had finished restoring the fold-down bed to its upright and locked position (Like a plane tray table, she thought with amusement), and was pulling on her boots when she saw Jones emerge from the store again. There was a thermos in his hand and a bag suspended over his left arm. He was grinning widely and shaking his head.

A/N: So… this is gonna be a thing now. I was not planning a series, but I have definitely fallen in love with one. I don’t know how long it’ll be though. There is a tag list so let me know if you want to be on it.

We lay there long after the sun has risen. She’s still asleep. I woke up about an hour ago, but I just can’t bring myself to leave her side. A thick lock of her hair falls over cheek, the ends being blown gently every time she exhales. Her lips are parted slightly. Her eyelids flutter as she dreams. She’s on her stomach, hugging her pillow beneath her head. The sheets cover her from the waist down, her bare skin practically glowing in the sunlight that falls over her.

These are the moments I’ll always hold onto, the moments I’m terrified of forgetting.

I reach out, my fingertips brushing against her cheek as I move her hair back in place. I sit up a bit, leaning over her and placing a kiss on her cheek. She sighs in her sleep, the sound content as she shifts a bit.

I climb out of bed as gently as can. She deserves her rest, and I want to give it to her. The floor is cold against my bare feet as I leave the room. I collect my gym bag from the hallway closet before going to the elevator and heading down to the gym.

Steve’s already there, going in on a punching bag. He catches it in his hands, greeting me with his usual smile.

“She still asleep?” he asks, adjusting the tape around his hands.

“Yeah, she seemed to be okay so I thought I’d get in a quick workout.”

He nods, watching me as I cross the room to the weight bench. He comes over to spot me as I lay back and the take the metal bar in my hands.

“How’s she doing?” he asks, his eyes on me rather than on the bar.

“It’s been a rough six months, but she’s getting better every day.”

“She still seeing her therapist?”

“She’s down to just once a week.”

“The nightmares?”

“They still keep her up more often than I’d like.” I return the bar to the stand and sit up, “This is the first time she’s slept through the night in over a week.”

He sits beside me but says nothing as he waits for me to say more.

“She won’t talk to me on her own, and I’m afraid to ask her.”

“Have you considered talking to her doctor?”

I shake my head, “I’m not sure she’d be okay with that.”

“Consider it part of her care.”

I scoff, nodding as I tuck my hair behind my ear, “You might have a point.”

Before he can reply, FRIDAY’s voice cuts him off.

“Mr. Barnes, you have a phone call. Would you like me to take a message?”

“No. I’ll take it.”

I stand, crossing the room to pick up the phone from its receiver on the wall.

“Barnes.”

“Hello, Mr. Barnes. This is Dr. Kennedy, (Y/N)’s psychiatrist.”

I glance at Steve; he arches his eyebrow in curiosity.

“I was hoping to speak with you in reference to her care. Would you mind coming by my office today around 1?”

“That shouldn’t be a problem.”

“Also,” he pauses, sighing, “I have to ask that you don’t tell her we’re meeting. I would hate to cause any unnecessary anxiety or stress.”

“Understood. I’ll see you this afternoon.”

I hang up the phone and go back to stand beside Steve.

“Who was that?”

“(Y/N)’s therapist. I’m meeting with him at 1, but he doesn’t want her to know.”

Maybe the worry’s radiating from my body or he can simply see it in my eyes, but Steve puts a hand on my shoulder and smiles.

“I’m sure everything’s fine, Buck.”

“Yeah.” I nod, “You’re probably right.”

I know he’s probably wrong. I mean, why else would the guy call me in?

We finish our workout around 11, having spent nearly two hours in the gym.

Back at our apartment, we walk in to find (Y/N) in the kitchen cooking. The room is filled with the soft sound of classical music. Steve heads to his room to change while I go to stand beside her at the stove. She glances up at me and smiles. I have to stifle the laughter that dares to rise up out of me.

“You’ve got… a little… something.” I try to direct her toward it, but she keeps missing, “I’ll get it.”

I grab a paper towel in one hand while holding her chin in the other. She closes her eyes, scrunching her nose up as I wipe the pancake batter from her cheek. She giggles softly as I turn her head from side to side, making sure I got it all.

“Hi.” She says, wrapping her hand around my wrist.

“Hey.” I whisper, leaning down to place a kiss on her lips.

When I lean away again, she licks her lips and pulls out of my grasp as she turns back to the stove.

“Breakfast should be done by the time you change clothes.”

I do my best to ignore the unusual distance between us as I go to our bedroom to change out of my sweaty clothes.

Dr. Michael Kennedy reminds me a lot of Bruce in his demeanor. He’s a small man, standing about as tall as (Y/N) with dark, blond hair and green eyes. He’s a young guy, maybe in his early thirties. I’ve only met him once before. It was the same (Y/N) was finally discharged from the hospital; therapy was a condition of her release. At first it was three times a week, then two and now one. I’ve never been sure it was helping her.

The office door opens.

“Mr. Barnes, sorry to keep you waiting.” He offers his hand as he approaches, “Thank you for coming on such short notice.”

I shake his hand, “I assume it’s something important.”

He nods, releasing my hand and sitting across from me. “I would say so.”

“Then what is it?”

He pulls a notebook from the bag at his feet, “How much has she told you about her nightmares?”

“Not much. Nothing recently.”

“As I suspected.” He flips through the pages of the notebook before slipping on his glasses and glancing up at me, “I have to ask, though. Do you want to know?”

That’s a good question. I don’t know anything about the most recent nightmare, but she’s seen him since it started. What if it’s about me? What if there’s something I can do? I guess I won’t know unless…

“Tell me.”

“Actually,” he reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out a small recorder, setting on the table between us, “I’m going to let her tell you.”

My eyes focus on the tape recorder as he presses play. There’s nothing but a soft hissing sound at first before his voice interrupts it.

“How are you, (Y/N)?”

“I’m okay. Tired.”

“How have you been sleeping?”

“Not very well.”

“Why is that?”

There’s a long pause before she says, “Nightmares.”

“The same ones or_”

“No. This one was different.”

“Do you remember it?”

“Yes.”

“We’re going to talk about it.”

“I know.”

“Were you in the dream?”

“Yes. It was like watching a movie.”

“Was anyone else there?”

“Bucky was there.”

“Was it Bucky? Or was it Winter?”

“No. It was Bucky, and at first everything was fine.”

“Where were you in this dream?”

“I’m not sure. We were in a room. There were no windows or doors and barely any light.” I can hear the scribbling of pen against paper. She continues. “I was on my knees in front of him. He passed his hand over my hair and smiled down at me. I smiled back, and then something changed. His gaze turned so cold and his hand fisted in my hair and he pulled. I cried out. I begged him to let go. There was this laugh from behind me, a voice in my ear.”

“Who was it?”

“Vasily Karpov.”

“What did he say?”

“He called me a fool, said that the Soldier didn’t have the capacity to love. He said that Winter only cared for me because he was ordered to. Then he was standing behind Bucky_”

“So he’s still Bucky?”

“Yes.”

“What happened after he stood behind him?”

“Karpov whispered something in his ear. Bucky let my hair go; he kind of tossed me away. When I looked back at him, there was a pistol in his hand, and it was pointed right at me.”

“Did he pull the trigger?”

“I don’t know.” She probably just shrugged her shoulders. “I woke up.”

“(Y/N), are you afraid of Bucky?”

“No.” She sounds so sure.

“Are you afraid of Winter?”

“No.” Maybe a little less sure…

“Are you afraid of the Soldier?”

Silence. Then… “I don’t know.”

“In previous sessions, we’ve gone over the differences between Bucky, Winter and the Soldier. You don’t fear the first two so why fear the Soldier?”

“Because… somewhere inside of Bucky is Winter and inside of Winter…”

“Is the Soldier.”

“Yes.”

“You say you’re not afraid of him, but are you afraid that Bucky is capable of becoming that man again?”

I can hear her take a deep breath. “I shouldn’t be afraid of him.”

“But you are.”

“I just don’t understand why.”

“Did you ever see the Soldier in action?”

“Only during training.”

“Did he train you?”

“No. Winter was responsible for my training. Vasily made me watch as the Soldier trained the other recruits though. He said it was his way of showing me what Winter was truly capable of. In the beginning, I think it was his way of making me think that he alone could protect me because he held the control.”

“But was it only Winter he controlled?”

“He controlled us both.”

Movement. Were you sitting where I am? Leaning toward him as you spoke? Were your hands shaking as you told your story? Or were they balled into tight fights, resting on your knees as you tried to stifle your anxiety?

“I was a prisoner, but I thought I was home. I was safe. I was protected. I was taken care of. In the end, I was loved. Vasily Karpov helped to destroy the person I was. Now I can’t even look the man I love in the eye because I’m waiting for him to kill me.”

I reach out to the recorder, pressing down on the stop button. I close my eyes and sigh.

“This the first time you’ve ever been the one holding the gun.”

I open my eyes, my vision blurred by unshed tears.

“I asked her if she understood that she was in no danger. She said she understood, but I don’t know that I believe her.”

“You know, one of her favorite things is when she’s laying on my lap and I run my fingers through her hair, but this… this explains why she’s been pushing me away.” I wipe at a tear that falls down my cheek, “Isn’t there something you can do?”

“Any medications I give her may not work properly because of the serum in her system. Talking can only get her so far. Bucky, this is up to you now.”

“What do I do?”

“Find a way to take away her fear. Show her that she has nothing left to be afraid of.”

Somehow… that seems easier said than done.

the song remains the same

[So. I was taking a break from writing an essay and stumbled across a post from @neonlightwood with Jimon prompts here. My brain then decided I absolutely needed to write the first one. Enjoy?]

Okay, so maybe the day had started off a little weirdly.

Not that Raphael was a big talker, usually preferring to intimidate people by giving them the silent and stony treatment, but the conversation had been a lot quieter than usual. He hadn’t told Simon to shut up more than twice, for one, and he kept staring at him in a way that was starting to make him uncomfortable. It reminded him too much of how they had met, when he was still a mundane, taken captive by Camille. Like prey, his brain helpfully supplied, and thank you so much for that, brain.

Watch on caitielou-askew.tumblr.com

In addition to the @starbotdubssituation, I have a few words to say about Ultima’s response here (sorry Steph if you’d rather not get tagged in this). I looked up his channel out of pure curiosity and found this video.

This is exactly the kind of non-apology that people in bad relationships need to look out for. In fact people in any relationship, because often when someone’s in a bad relationship it doesn’t FEEL bad to them, at least not for a while. I want to break down what he’s doing here because it’s almost brilliant in its structure, and so true to form for people who are emotionally abusive.

1. He comes out the gate with a ton of unqualified absolutes. “What’s going on in the here and now.” “100% real, honest, and transparent (”anyone who has been subscribed to me…knows this)” “I’ve kept it real with the fans since day one” “This is nothing but the unclouded truth.” “I will not make excuses for my actions.” We have no reason to believe these are true, he’s said and done nothing to back them up. It sounds really upfront and honest, but there’s really nothing substantial here. It’s all fluff to appeal to the emotions (also phrases like “if you cannot find it within your heart to forgive me as a human being” serve the same purpose).

2. His first apology is to those whose respect he has lost (which he highlights himself by saying he wants to “apologize in advance to them”). NOT to the people who he has hurt. This is an important distinction because the respect of his fans is an asset with material value. I couldn’t say whether he did this consciously or not, but at the very least it seems a rather bizarre choice for a first apology given all that’s been alleged against him.

3. Two minutes into all this fluff he finally says he’s going to keep it short and concise because “time is a very precious matter.” Aside from being a contradiction, I’m pretty sure the most important matter in the video should be adequately addressing the issue at hand. Brevity has nothing to do with that. If it takes a longer video to properly explain what happened, then so be it. I can only chalk this up to showmanship, kind of like those people in the mall kiosks who pull you aside so you can sample their product, and several minutes into their spiel are still saying “in just 2 minutes I can show you why you need this product!” Maybe it’s just because I’ve worked a lot in marketing, but this whole video sounds very much like a sales pitch to me. Especially with how fast he’s talking (unless that’s how he always talks? again I don’t watch his channel).

4. He says he will explain WHY he did what he did, not WHAT happened. Here’s where the real problem with this video starts to show itself: his rationale has absolutely NO bearing on the situation at hand. What he owes his fans and Steph and everyone else he’s hurt is a summary of the events and an apology. Bringing in his reasons for doing what he did sounds a lot like those “excuses” he said he was not going to give in the beginning.

5. IMMEDIATELY after he begins that objective summary he gives completely unnecessary “opinions” about how he feels about Stephanie. And this is where the emotionally abusive language kicks in. Remember when Steph said in her post how her psychology bells started ringing? This is what she was talking about. “I literally honored and treasured our relationship to the fullest and never took it for granted.” There is so much to unpack in that sentence. It’s one-sided, it’s absolute, it’s possessive, and it’s blatantly untrue. Because if he hadn’t taken what they had for granted, he wouldn’t have hurt her in the first place. To take something for granted is to fail to appreciate it. If he believes that is true IN SPITE of what he did, then it’s clear his definition of appreciating someone in a relationship has nothing to do with the other person’s feelings about the relationship.

6. The summary continues and is peppered with his emotional reactions (”I was like oh no, did I do something wrong”). Again unnecessary, and only meant to illicit sympathy for him as opposed to communicating the story in an “unclouded” manner.

7. Next is a HUGE RED FLAG: he implies that how he treated Stephanie (or rather how the thinks he has treated her) has ANYTHING to do with whether or not she should be in a relationship with him. Do you remember all those “friendzoned” memes from a while back, and how one meme that responded to them went something like “women are not vending machines that you put kindness coins into until sex comes out?” THIS IS WHAT THOSE MEMES WERE TALKING ABOUT.

I cannot stress this enough. HOW YOU TREAT SOMEONE IN A RELATIONSHIP DOES NOT PUT THEM UNDER ANY OBLIGATION TO CONTINUE THAT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU. PERIOD.

It doesn’t matter how nice you are. It doesn’t matter if you treat them like a “queen,” or a “king,” or whatever. You have no right to them. They are free to end the relationship on any terms they see fit, and if you are any kind of a decent human being with even an OUNCE of respect for them you will let them go and not pursue them any further. FULL. STOP.

8. He says twice that Steph “came out of nowhere” and said this to him. At this point he’s done a full 180 and framed HIMSELF as the victim here. That’s right–not even halfway into the video and now HE’S the one who had this sudden breakup INFLICTED upon him. Steph is now the instigator who brought these events upon HIM. This couldn’t be a more perfect example of victim-blaming.

9. He glosses over the later parts of the story, summarizing the events only by saying he “became greedy” and “began talking to other women.” This is the part of the story where he himself says he did wrong, yet he offers no detail into what specifically he did and said. Before when he was the victim, we got a play-by-play for how the breakup went down. But he spends as little time as possible actually explaining what he did wrong.

10. More appeals to emotion. “When you want something so bad so as to be able to have that completeness, to be able to have that love with someone, you’d do just about anything to get it.” He completely fails to see how his “love” was one-sided and, after the termination of the relationship, totally unwelcome. Even now he does not understand how it is possible for someone he wants to be in a relationship with to not want to be with him. In his mind if he likes the person and treats them right, they should by default feel the same way about him. He does not understand autonomy in relationships.

11. More appeals for the audience’s forgiveness.

Never once in the video does he apologize directly to anyone he hurt. Never once does he ask for their forgiveness, or express any regret for hurting them or losing their respect. The only forgiveness he asks for is that of his subscribers’.

I know not everybody appreciates a wall-o-text in their feed, but if you got this far thank you for reading. This is a textbook case of emotional abuse. If you or someone you love has a partner who talks like this about them, or apologizes like this when they do wrong, please step back and analyze the situation. When you’re in the middle of this it can be so hard to see the signs, but they’re there and crystal clear if you know what to look for. Much love to Stephanie and everyone else affected by him.

Part One

Pietro’s mind could not wrap around the fact that you weren’t bothered by him. He was used to people falling for him instantly, as he flirts his way through life. He could have anyone he wanted; it wasn’t hard for him to get someone, but of course; he chose the one person that was unaffected by his personality.

However, it did get to his head. Being so obsessed with you and everything about you, it distracted him from what he really needed to be focusing on. You and Pietro worked well together as if something were to happen that needed to be stopped quickly, you could slow time and Pietro would run to whoever needed it. Sure, you could have done it, but moving while your stalling time uses a lot of energy you don’t normally have. So, it was nice to have the speedster on your side.

Ever since you joined the Avengers, it was hard for anyone to ever win. That was, until this fight where Pietro didn’t listen to you and flirted the whole time. Frankly, it was driving you crazy that he wouldn’t listen. Typically, you would get a good shot at the villain and slow the time for Pietro to knock out, but he wasn’t listening.

“Pietro! Listen to me!” You shouted through the comms as you fought off enemies. Sure, you could have stopped everything and just pushed them all over, but it doesn’t work like that. You may be powerful, but you also know how much energy slowing and stopping time takes. It could use all of your energy up to get rid of the smaller threats, and it wasn’t worth risking your shot at their leader just to get rid of a few pesky rats.

Things Every Customer in Retail Stores Should Know (Warning: This is long.)
  1. Learn to read. Signs, price tags, coupons, everything. Nothing makes you look stupider than holding up an item and asking for the price, and then the associate taking it and reading the price tag out loud to you.
  2. If there is no discount marked, you don’t magically get one because you said the word “discount”.
  3. The people working in the store do NOT make up the prices, there is no use complaining about them to us, if you want someone who is paid to listen to your whining, simply ask for or find the customer service number or keep it to yourself.
  4. We are ordered to greet you. If you do not need assistance, simply say so in a neutral manner. We probably greeted you in a neutral manner, so loudness/rudeness  in response to “Hello, can I help you?” is unnecessary. “Just looking” is also not an emotion. “How are you doing?” can be sufficiently answered with “Good.” We are humans, too. Unless maybe you’re not. Then I excuse your rudeness.
  5. “The customer is always right”  is the least true statement in the known universe. No one believes you over an employee about our policies. The customer is usually a dumbass.
  6. “Do you work here?” If we are doing work in the store or wearing some form of name tag/uniform, we work there. What civilian wanders into retail stores and starts working on a to-do list?
  7. We can hear you. We are not checkpoints in video games. Even if you are not speaking directly to us, we can hear you.
  8. “Select items on sale” means select items are on sale. Not every item near the sign or in the store. Whatever is indicated as being on sale is on sale. Nothing else.
  9. “Oh so is it free then?” If you bring something up the the counter that has no price/SKU number/barcode that item is not free, that item is a pain in the ass for me and you, but mostly me. I have to look it up now. Sit tight and shut up. You chose to bring this up here. Just knowing the price also does not help me, so don’t declare it like you’re being a big help by knowing the price.
  10. “How can that be that much?!?!” Did you not read any of the tags? Did you pick up these items willy-nilly because you liked them and think they’d all add up to ten dollars? All the numbers on the price tags add up when I scan them with the bippity boop and then tax is added. So yes, I made up that large sum and pulled it out of my ass to make the company more money, even though that does not benefit me directly and is illegal.
  11. No, I can’t give you an employee discount. You don’t work here. Nor any other discount either, because the items you’ve chosen do not have a discount on them.
  12. Dressing rooms. Do you leave your room looking like this? Your house? You just fling clothes you don’t find suitable all over and leave hangers everywhere? Someone, a fellow human, has to pick this up and put it away. The least you can do is hang your 50 unwanted garments up and put them on the go-back rack provided. You picked them up in the first place. It’s thirty seconds.
  13. “I won’t be taking this.” If you don’t want an item, why did you pick it up and bring it to the register? Just put it back where you found it. No one made you pick it up.
  14. Exchange/Return policy. Individual store associates do not come up with these policies on our own or on the spot. They are company policies that someone getting paid a helluva lot more than us has developed. (See #3.)
  15. Closing time is the time we workers are supposed to lock the doors, clean up, and count the registers. If closing time is 9 pm, and you fly in a 8:55, we hate your stinking guts. “Whew, just made it!” No. You have five minutes to make your selections and check out and leave. We are scheduled for a certain time to a certain time. We are not at your disposal past closing time. Get. OUT.
  16. “I can find this at _______ for less!” Glad you know where the deals are. Hop to ‘em!
  17. Not your therapist. Purchase your items and move along. Especially if there are people behind you. Your dog just died? I’m real sorry, but that has no effect on your total or my workday. I don’t know you or your dog. Sorry not sorry.
  18. Dressing rooms #2. There are usually found near the sign that says “Fitting Rooms” or “Dressing Rooms”, and they are usually equipped with doors or curtains. They also usually contain mirrors. If I point them out and you meander right past them and then ask me again where there are, I will assume you are a moron and will check when you vacate them, expecting a mountain of unwanted items. (See #12.)
  19. This or that questions. “Receipt in the bag or with you? Return or exchange?” These are not yes or no questions. The word “or” means you have been presented at least two choices, pick one. “Yes” or “No” gives me no information on what you want.
  20. Cards. If it got declined multiple times, I’d say try a different form of payment. If we ask for an ID, it’s probably because you didn’t sign the card, or you specifically wrote “See ID”. Just following your orders, customer. Keeping you safe. Also, swiping it again because it did not go through the first time, will NOT charge it multiple times. I repeat, it did not go through.
  21. “I left _____ in the car.” Why did you come into the mall/store without any form of payment and then try to purchase things? This is why I’m probably doing a bad job of not looking at you like you are an idiot.
  22. Customer Service. We are humans. If you treat us like shit or act deathly stupid, don’t expect a rainbows and sunshine reaction or a bubbly preschool teacher to explain shit to you. Use that noggin and we’ll all get along. “Even retail workers can do this,” as I like to say.
  23. Leave your children at home if they’ll be just as unsupervised with you while you shop. Or if they’re just little shits.
  24. “I’ll never shop here again!” Good. Bye.
  25. No receipt? No, no cash refund for you. Store credit.
  26. Multiple transactions in one day. Gather ALL the shit you wanna buy before you come to the counter. Shopping while you’re bogged down with bags of what you just bought makes zero sense. If you have time to shop a second time, you have time to get all your crap before you approach the counter at all.
  27. Questions. If you ask me a question and then interrupt when I try to answer or don’t trust my answer, why did you ask to begin with? “Let me speak with your manager.” Ok, but my manager is going to tell you the same thing. Why would I lie?
  28. We have human lives just like you outside of our workplace. If we just clocked out or are just on break, we will not be able to help you. We are not on your time anymore. Find someone else. Do not try to grab my arm as I am leaving the store with my purse and jacket, I’m a civilian now. Fuck off.
  29. Your jokes are not funny. You are not funny. Captive audience does not equal willing audience.
  30. Do not lie to me about how much cash you gave me. I am holding it in my hand and the computer tells me exactly how much change you get; just stuff it into your messy, overcrowded wallet and move along.

Rant over.

handsome-jacks-ghost  asked:

You've head the news? DragonDicks and and her cohorts bullied some MLP artist off Tumblr just because they didn't want to add a trigger warning for the color blue. Your thoughts?

The blue in question is the default color of tumblr.

They wanted this artist to put a trigger warning on the default color of a social media site:  A color which is incredibly hard to avoid–even using dashboard themes–because the site is constantly changing.  As someone who has a personalized dashboard theme that I keep having to fix, I know this all too well.  I mean, fuck–here are at least four posts in which I specifically lament that godawful fucking color, even going so far as to call it “that dark, murky turquoise of infinite despair”.

A trigger warning is meant as an aid for people to avoid things or situations that could trigger a genuine anxiety attack (by “genuine” I mean actually hyperventilating, feeling nauseous, and other symptoms akin to motion sickness.  Continuing to argue on tumblr is a pretty good indication that a person is not, in fact, experiencing an anxiety attack, particularly if doing so forces them to keep venturing into situations that allegedly trigger them).  For an example of a legitimate trigger, I know someone who had difficulty coping with the smell of burning wood after a fire broke out behind her apartment (she’s actually managed to overcome this after a pleasant experience camping in the woods).  This ties into the natural human fear of death, and of loss of home.  These are very common, very basic fears.  Before she overcame this fear, she would simply remove herself from situations where she might encounter smells that reminded her of that experience.

To add an experience of my own, I had a near-drowning incident when I was very young, and have been slowly trying to overcome my fear of deep, dark water (and large objects in said water).  Even just seeing pictures taken deep underwater makes me feel incredibly anxious (I’m happy to say that it’s getting a lot better).  HOWEVER, I do not seek out to find these things in order to complain about them, or try to force others not to post them.  It is also not my–nor anyone else’s–business to tell others what they are “allowed” to post, and how they are “allowed” to tag them.  Were we discussing something like images of explicit gore, it would be a different story.  That is something that is (hopefully) not omnipresent in the lives of the majority of human beings, and is a fairly universal taboo.

On tumblr, we have the ability to unfollow a person, block them, or to blacklist their posts in order to not see them.  These are tools with which a person can protect themselves.  Refusal to use these tools is the burden of the user, and no one else.  If you can’t take measures to protect yourself, why should anyone else feel compelled to give a damn either?  If you don’t buckle your seat belt, it’s not the car’s fault when your forehead ends up going through the windshield.

When we talk about triggers, we’re talking about legitimate physical and psychological concerns.  Unfortunately, certain people have appropriated this concept as a shield, and as a means of censorship against things they just don’t happen to like.  The value of others’ genuine suffering is being lowered and trivialized so that these people can apply it to themselves, and gain a sense of moral superiority by pretending to be “victims” that are “speaking out”.  It’s a means of receiving attention and credit for basically not doing a goddamn thing.

You do not get rid of a pile of dirt by trying to hide it under the rug.  All that does is leave a large lump of resentment just waiting to be exposed.  You get rid of it by learning how to clean better.  It is not the duty of the world to sanitize itself, nor to make itself “safe” for every person.  People like Dragondicks seem to be under the impression that the world needs to change just for them–they seem incapable of understanding that humanity is composed of people that think and feel differently than they do.  That which is “offensive” is also subjective.

We already saw this same behavior two decades ago when “politically correct” language came into fashion.  It was a joke then, and it’s a joke now.  It doesn’t matter which side it’s coming from.  In the end, unnecessary repression of expression is harmful.

Abuse of trigger warnings is psychologically detrimental to human beings.  This isn’t a sudden revelation, either.  Excessive sheltering behavior actually handicaps children:

It was never a case of someone being “insensitive”.  It was always a case of others having tools at their disposal to block out content they didn’t wish to see in order to protect themselves, but refusing to use them.  Think of it like a person deliberately seeking out and entering a store that sells clothing they dislike, and demanding that they remove everything from the racks.  All of this over something that is a default part of the site’s coding.  EVERYONE hates the blue, but IT’S ALWAYS BEEN HERE.  If they hate it so much, then perhaps they should remove themselves from tumblr entirely.

If they did, I’m sure the overall quality of the site would improve as well.

Honestly, I can’t believe how badly DD keeps embarrassing herself.  I still can’t help but feel sorry for her (especially after seeing… …nevermind…), but every time I give her an ounce of sympathy, she once again dives face-first into a brick wall, and expects to be rewarded for it.

I'm up to date with the entire manga and I still see no reason why Ushi fans are so defensive of him. He's got no personality to make him endearing in the first place. He's completely overshadowed by his more likable teammates. There is nothing memorable about him except him being an over powered antagonist. Even then he's already been defeated so he's irrelevant and out of the manga for good now lmao.

OKAY Sorry that it took me so long to write this answer! I wanted to give you an answer that was both complete and thorough. So, in an effort to do that, I’m going to go through your question step by step! :) (and there’s also a TL;DR at the bottom just in case!)

Richonne S7 Wishlist

No new Richonne scenes for months so I thought I’d bring this up again as a fun pastime.   Last yr I put out a Richonne S6 Wishlist & suggested others make their own as a positivity push. I enjoyed reading everyone’s different ideas & I’m happy to say tptb gave me A LOT of things I asked for.  http://mscurious88.tumblr.com/post/116507163796/richonne-s6-wishlist

Does the law of attraction work? IDK. But, it’d be fun to see what everyone has on their S7 wishlists. What 10 things would happen in S7 if you were the boss? Here’s my list:

1. A RICHONNE HUG.  Hopefully S7 it’ll finally happen (a couple times). They NEED a reunion hug after Negan & I’d like to see Rick & Michonne leaning on each other, literally, as they face an all out war. Richonne hugs 1&2)Charlie Adlard, Fan artist hugs: 3)themeedes 4)merlin-rain 5&6) michonneisbae 7)K-EAR-AH  8) madwomanlexie 9)Usskira

2.  “WOW! I can’t believe Rick/Michonne did that” Moments. No season should pass w/out at least 1 MAJOR & 1 minor INDIVIDUAL victories for each.

Hiddlestoners

(WARNING: STRONG OPINIONS PRESENTED. DON’T LIKE, PLEASE DON’T READ. THANK YOU)
Y'know, I never thought I’d see the day when I’d avoid going into the Tom Hiddleston tag for fear of hate and/or unsavoury gossip, but alas, here we are. That tag is so riddled with spiteful comments and negative speculation taken as fact, then grossly exaggerated, that even finding information regarding his current project(s) is difficult. The reality of how divided and reproachful we’ve become is quite saddening. I, for one, joined this fandom because I saw an onscreen character who instantly captured my attention, researched the actor behind him, and gradually fell in love with one whom I consider to be incredibly talented, interesting, intelligent, kind, etc. I make the assumption that this is how it began for most of us. It was so hard for fans and media alike to scrape up negative press about this guy. Now? Hooooo boy! The hate is strong with this fandom. The words “famewhore”, “liar”, “piece of shit”, “disappointment”, “traitor”, “pathetic”, etc… (honestly I could continue for hours), are everywhere. One would think something absolutely revolting happened, that called into question his morality, humanity, sanity, ethics…. Yes. He…. dated…. a…… girl….. wait, what? That’s it? Where are the murder charges? Arson? Theft? No? Huh. A date. A date has people acting like he killed their firstborn. Huh. The amount of hate is, in my opinion, out of proportion to the act. He dated someone some fans don’t approve of, without asking each and every fan’s permission, and suddenly he’s the scum of the Earth. The self entitled attitude of many disenchanted fans is striking. I get it. Many people have a problem with Taylor Swift. But it’s not just her. Every girl Tom has been linked to, rumoured or confirmed, has been bombarded with hate from fans who won’t settle for anything less than Tom’s ring on their finger. Taylor’s immense, and sometimes controversial popularity has only served to increase that hate tenfold (at least). Some people disliking their relationship is inevitable and, to an extent, understandable. My issue is that it’s gone way beyond what I consider to be the extent. Can you dislike Taylor and/or Tom? Absolutely. Can you dislike their choice to be publicly together? Absolutely. Can you be disappointed? Yes. Would Tom be disappointed in the scale of the vitriol thrown his way by people once claiming support? Without a doubt. The man himself said that he prefers to be positive, and that negative energy costs in the end. He mentioned that unnecessary rudeness irritates him. I doubt many, especially those who claim Tom isn’t as bubbly as usual, realize that disappointment can go both ways. This amount of negativity thrown at him can wear one down, even one as positive as Tom. He is a grown man who is perfectly within his rights to make his own decisions regarding his personal life, and I’m sorry to break this to you, but he is under no obligation whatsoever to consult with fans before making any of them. You do not own him, you are not his parents, and he is not obligated to cater to your every whim. He has said repeatedly how grateful he is for his fans, how lucky he is to have made it this far with their support. He has gone out of his way to treat us well, staying late at events, taking pictures with everyone he can, but apparently the sense of entitlement doesn’t end there. He now has to give us control of his every move, and jump as high as we tell him to. Ok then. It’s not like he’s a person or anything, right? …. right? And as a person, he really hasn’t changed. People who know him, have worked with him, or met him personally all attest to him being a nice, sweet, charming gent. I’d say those reports are more accurate than those from disillusioned fans or gossip mags with a bias and a job to make money off of dirty stories. Doesn’t matter how true they are, (most aren’t even remotely accurate), if it sells, if people lap it up, it’s labelled a success. As for employment, directors he’s worked with, including ones held in high respect such as Spielberg, Allen, Del Toro, etc, have had nothing but glowing praise for his talent and personality. I’d say potential employers will go by that. As for the PR stunt, Tom himself has confirmed that rumour as false. Anything else is pure speculation, some of it reaching quite far. Did he know he’d get a lot of attention dating her? Yes. He’s a very smart man. He knew he’d be put under a microscope dating someone as high profile as Taylor. He also knew he’d receive backlash, but I think even he is shocked at the extent of it. Did he expect it? Yes. Does he deserve it? I’d say no. Sheer hatred for something so trivial is not, in my opinion, warranted. At the end of the day, it’s your choice to disapprove of his decisions. It is also your choice to push all this negativity onto everyone else, and although some may agree with you, there are others who honestly just want to use this site to share and enjoy common interests with others. Spending that much time writing insults and trying to tear down someone you so very evidently hate, yet don’t even know, just seems like a real waste of time. It’s unlikely to change his choice, it doesn’t make his day better, or yours, or anyone’s day better, for that matter. Really, what’s the point? There are surely other, more productive things you could do with your time. Don’t like him? Ignore him. It’s very simple and improves the situation for many people. The amount of people acting like betrayed ex lovers is staggering. And much of what I see is, in my opinion, more than a little petty. Are you trying to prove he’s a bad person by cursing him, saying he’s worthless, a loser, etc? Um….. would you like to be the pot or the kettle there? What are you trying to prove? And to whom? I’ve seen fans leave sites because their safe zone was so compromised by hate that it just became overwhelming, and not worth dealing with. Congrats. Well done, all. His reputation as the “ thinking woman’s heartthrob” has been damaged, not by him, but by us. Does anyone go into the comments and think of that title anymore? There are so many wonderful, supportive people that I love seeing on my dash, but with that comes at least 10 mean comments. It’s almost unavoidable, even if you try your damnedest to avoid it. Again, feel free to ignore this, disagree, whatever. It’s honestly just something I needed to get off my chest. Thank you for your time / I’m sorry for cluttering up your dash/this tag, whichever one applies.

What is it with this fandom and glorifying jerks like Kageyama? Do people only like him because they like the stereotypical asshole rival cliche? It would be ok if you all could admit ‘yeah he’s a jerk’ but all I ever see is ‘poor wittle tobio suffered so much’. He deserved to be abandoned and hated for being a domineering asshole with anger issues. Have you ever had to deal with someone like him? I'm probably gonna drop the manga because of him or at least skip wherever I see his stupid face.

Oh anon-chan. Part of me thought about just deleting this since it’s the 2nd Kags-hating ask I’ve gotten. But I’ll answer it for 2 reasons. One, other people might still be getting asks like this and I want to help calm any tension out there if possible and speak for those who may not want to themselves. Two, you may be seriously wanting to know the answer to your questions? I can’t say if you’re just trying to start a fight or if you’re seriously baffled, so I’ll answer because HQ is about Kags just as much as it is about Hinata, if not more so. I’m sorry to dump this on everyone’s dash, but hear me out under the read more (sorry if you’re on mobile I got things to say).

major-ocelot  asked:

What are your thoughts on little Zoro being teased and made fun of for not being able to read or write?

I actually have thought the whole hc through and wrote stuff for it down while I was at school a few days ago so I will just post some of what I already have here

When Zoro was training at the dojo he had obligatory writing and reading classes along with other kids there. The thing is I headcanon Zoro having both dyslexia and dysgraphia, so to learn how to write and read properly he should have had some extra classes, and maybe a teacher who’d pay a lot attention to him. Unfortunately, he was in the class of 30 rambling, squeaking, yelling and making other inappropriate noises kids and had a not particularly patient teacher who not only was not helping Zoro at all, but also used to scold and shame him for “not trying hard enough” and “being lazy” when of course, it was entirely not Zoro’s fault.

At first, the kids in Zoro’s class weren’t paying much attention to his reading/writing difficulties because starting off they were not that noticeable - everyone used to have some problems with it trying to read or write for the first time, am I right? But as the time went by, every kid at class was getting better and better but Zoro. His teacher then started to shame him and the other kids caught on. This might’ve been the cause of Zoro’s aversion to learning. No matter how hard he tried there were no visible results of his work and he was getting bullied for it anyway, so he finally gave up seeing no sense in further trying. He thought that if he’s going to be bullied anyway he might as well do nothing which obviously is the easier option. Kids laughing at him because of his reading and writing difficulties made him feel like nothing, so he used to get into a whole lot of unnecessary fights just to show these brats that he’s actually worth something. But the kids kept picking on him and calling him names, so Zoro eventually started denying his illiteracy, avoiding all the situations where the writing or reading skills were required for literally years.

And I made myself sad again woah

*wakes up hungover and still kind of pissed off/delighted about the trenchcoat of true love thing from last episode*

It’s just… the timing of it. I’ve spent what feels like the whole season talking myself down from being too optimistic about them going down the true-love-fixes-everything route and a reverse Crypt Scene has been a pipe dream (and now like half the comments I’ve seen on this episode have been people sitting there wide eyed saying It may actually happen). The rest of the time I’ve been quietly accepting the whole combined love of everyone (like, Charlie, Sam, Cas, probably Kevin’s ghost standing in the background like Obi Wan at the end of Star Wars…) inspires Dean to find his inner strength and stop, blah blah. And yeah, I still think they’re not going to sideline Sam in all this or anything, but…

Every episode since 10x09 has offered a suggestion of a solution or attempt at one, in a way. 10x10 wasn’t very helpful but set up some big main plot arc stuff and set Cas off finding Cain, along with Sam ticking off the “can you just try stopping?” thing from the Colette list of ways to fix it… 10x11 had all the stuff about needing to find balance between your dark and light sides, Dean trying the healthy abstinence route, Charlie making a huge point of the forgiveness thing from the Colette speech… 10x12 had Dean making positive character growth, casually admitting his alcoholism and coming to terms with himself by taking back his grown up body with the Mark, while witchcraft was dragged into the mix along with a Rowena name drop, suggesting another big main plot angle of attack. FINE. None of this is Destiel, none of this is a bad approach (except maybe the witchcraft thing, y'know), all of it will probably still feed together in some way because there’s got to be more than just one random moment of whatever that will fix it - there’s got to be long-term effects and recovery for Dean or this story just won’t have been worth the effort, and all of THAT development works perfectly for it. THAT’S COOL, I NEED ALL OF THAT TO HAPPEN TOO NOT JUST SOME SPECIAL DESTIEL MOMENT.

And then 10x13 has Dean backslide on most of his positive character development, back to the over-eating like in 10x09 and I’m not mentioning the college girls, then there was his pep talk about whiskey and denial, and fatalistic speech at the end about going down swinging (that helps no one Dean - dying is a double edged sword for you if you’d somehow forgotten). The most optimistic angle was Dean empathising with a vengeful ghost that got put to rest and talking about finding his own peace as a result of that, though clearly aware it was one more way of coping until it was over, his exhaustion with the whole thing clear. On the surface it’s depressing and doesn’t offer any real textual advice on how we’re meant to fix Dean permanently…

But then there’s the fucking unsubtle subtext of the episode, the big unspoken thing that’s been lying over us since Cain first told us about Colette - that the only force stronger than the Mark so far has been love (Hey Cas and your line about an extremely powerful force). And we have never ever gone back to that idea. It’s seemed off the board all season to the point where some of us were speculating about this silence being them choosing a different route and regretting ever inserting the story. Dean hasn’t coughed up a word on how Cain stopped, except for possibly rationalising his clean living in 10x11 as doing as Cain did - but without the most important step in between. You can’t go from Father of Murder to beekeeper overnight. (Side note from my frazzled brain: if Cain is the Father of Murder, has Dean inherited a cool title? He’s like the Great Great Great Great [etc] Grandson of Murder. Doesn’t look so good on a business card.)

There’s a massive empty space in the story here, and when we get back to Cain chances are he may be pissed he broke his word to Colette and say so but we may not get much more than that on the background love story, because they’ve been backing off massively on everything from mentions of Colette to the mere existence of Cas and it may be still too early to fix Dean, so…

I think after all our flailing about the original little story from Cain, and all our meta and speculation and so on since, it’s probably important to remind ourselves that not only has Colette not been mentioned again since, but that while the connection to Cas felt pretty obvious at the time it’s not, like… I dunno, the story happened once a year ago, and aside from the whopping great parallel that until now intentionally hasn’t been followed up properly, obviously it’s all still subtext (and some unnamed groups who like ignoring that sort of thing are leaning on Sam literally being the Colette here so there was clearly not enough heavy-handed insertion of Cas-reminders in the original dialogue to make it unequivocal no matter how much it’s a part of the wait what the fuck are they doing that dragged me from casual viewer to whatever this mess is…).

So what’s so amazing about this stupid parallel is that after all the radio silence on the Colette front, literally the last episode before Cain comes back, while they still won’t tell us the final missing ingredient to the fix, they threw in an angry rage-filled ghost and had him talked back to peace by his trenchcoated wife. It’s one of the heaviest Dean/Cas parallels we’ve seen in ages what with there being a heavy-subtext blackout on that too for ages, and this time it’s mirroring for Dean and Cas something that hasn’t happened yet, or has only happened in speculation, something that still only may happen. It mirrors Cain stopping and gives us a reminder of his Colette, except that the Colette here was wearing a stylish version of Cas’s coat. That may also be just subtext, but they made the emphasis on Dean relating to the ghost strong enough that at the very least everyone in the audience could see that Dean was getting something from this interaction that related to his own development even if the comments from him at the end are still negatively inclined. I’m not sure how else to talk around the trenchcoat thing to suggest how much it might not have meant, considering one of the few other trenchcoat-wearing peeps recently was one member of the party that completely stole the dialogue from 6x20 to have an overtly romantic argument in the episode none of us would remember if not for that… (side note: how likely would we be to remember 10x13 in a few months if not for this fucking trenchcoat thing? :P)

Like, I know I’m probably not saying anything literally anyone who’s already on board with this hasn’t already thought, but I can’t get over the positioning of this moment as the reminder of the last un-tried solution right before the story finally changes up again - the one solution we’ve been quietly or not so quietly hoping for the entire time, being waved in front of our eyes again. And not only waved in front of our eyes, but with the totally unnecessary addition of a trenchcoat to the mix, it’s added in this other element which was even more unspoken that the way we’ve had a We Don’t Talk About Colette gag order lying over the whole season. This is strike two to say, that Colette thing didn’t just sound like a reflection of Cas and Dean’s relationship… Here’s actual subtextual support for not just the return of the story in general terms of how such a thing might be important for fixing Dean, but the importance of it being Cas.

I suppose what I’m so annoyed/happy about is that the one and only time they give us a really solid parallel to this unspoken way to pull back an angry rage monster from the edge, they give it to us as more than just a reminder that it can happen, but give us a who for free. And with the timing, it’s after a whole pile of not-quite-fixes, offered as only a suggestion in the background of what might work, since Dean’s refusing to comment on Colette and her role in helping Cain stop… Its timing as just before the big main plot episode which this has all been leading to… And comes after a considerable erasure of Cas from the story.

littlehollyleaf was giggling about how Dean went from talking about finding peace or whatever it was to Sam heavily reminding him how Cas was close… Through this season I’ve been keeping an extremely informal tally of the number of times Dean’s brought up Cas unprompted or ever talked about him at all in any way shape or form. I say informal because there has literally been not one fucking thing to write down. I am actually kind of impressed at how thoroughly they’ve sliced Cas from Dean’s point of view (I wrote a thing about their POV usage with this story a while back and called that Dean wasn’t going to have much to say about Cas circa 10x04 but I never would have guessed we’d get this deep into the season without him concerning himself with Cas once.)

So… yeah, this timely reminder is not just important for backing up our Destiel-based fixing Dean meta, but though we talk constantly about Dean and his Colette, whoever that may be, there are a hell of a lot of elements that have been shoved right out of the story, to the point of such total blackout on them having ever existed as far as Dean is concerned (sorry Cas, he’ll remember you exist eventually) that…

Well, I was totally ready to roll with whatever happened this season. I was going to be a chill shipper who could say, “yeah it’s fine there’s other ways and all the little things still mean something in the end” if we didn’t get things off the wish list like Reverse Crypt Scene or The Power of Love Saves The Day or all that junk. I was ready to roll over and be lame and say that they might wriggle out of the big bold path towards Destiel it could take in many ways and accept more subtle ways this parallel could sneak in (I’ve, as I now realise, wasted a lot of ink on that moderate viewpoint) while we’ve still got to survive season 11 and all the pitfalls towards Destiel.

But yeah, as of this week I’m back on the “they’ve written us a huge cheque and now all we can do is wait and see if it bounces or not” train. I literally don’t know how to cope with this without getting my hopes unreasonably high against all my better judgement.

So fuck it, are we all in for this stupid story going exactly where we all hoped as of now?
