i made this while at boarding school

which character should you fight (ft. Gen 1 FE:A dudes)

Chrom
Winner: You
look at this guy. look at his fashion choices. look at his nerd-ass lying on the ground in the smash trailer. someone needs to set this boy right. you may incur the wrath of everyone you dont want to fight but hey. do it for us. do it for all of humanity. (warning: he may try to marry you after. or before. or during.)

Frederick
Winner: who do you fuckin think
why would you even think about fighting frederick why would that thought ever cross your mind i mean 1. have you seen him. he has grown ass men and seasoned warriors on their knees praying, tears or sweat - fuck if they know - dripping down their faces just from his workouts. he’s the one who has to carry the bullshit of an entire kingdom, including his lords. 2. it was his ass that carried your slovenly ass through the first four chapters of lunatic/+ so how about you show some fucking respect. get fredereckt

Virion
Winner: You
are you kidding me? punch him in the crumpet. take his tea and pour it out in front of him. you get some on your clothes? no problem, rip his godforsaken cravat off and mop it up. if you’re a girl you might get away with it. otherwise he might fuck you up. who cares, it’s worth it.

Stahl
Winner: Stahl
fighting him will accomplish nothing. you’ll go up to him all ready for a tussle and he’ll glance over at you with a sleepy lopsided grin and a “oh hey, what’s up?” and that’s it. you’re done. you’ll lose all will to fight. his chill is contagious. and if you do somehow retain your fighting spirit? he’ll knock you flat on your ass. probably apologize too. it’ll be embarrassing for both of you. i mean the dude was trained by frederick after all. but i mean he’ll probably help you up and offer you food so idk. if you’re starving go for it.

Vaike
Winner: 50/50
look, i know what you’re thinking. look at all those muscles. the dude is ripped. fight him anyway. do it. he’ll probably forget his axe somewhere so you probably wont die. fuck him up. someone has to for the abomination that is “teach just got tenure.” Let him atone.

Lon’qu
Winner: Depends
If you aren’t a girl, you will be sliced into pieces so thin tharja might mistake you for her mesh body suit. if you are…. i mean you can try, but he’ll run. you can win if your cardio is good enough. go. chase him. Be Free.

Ricken
Winner: You
okay he’s the nerdiest of nerds but he’s also a fucking child so. idk man you can fight him if you want but what’s the point. if anything getting beat up by you will fuel his teenage rage and he’ll keep it stewing inside himself until he’s big enough to fight back and then you’ll have to deal with years of pent of rage and a napoleon complex but on a full sized being and no one wants to play therapist in a scrap. it just isnt worth it. i mean unless you’re like itachi uchiha then by all means go ahead

Gaius
Winner: You, but only with careful planning
ok so gaius isnt the toughest cookie, but he doesnt want to fight and he has access to the assassin class and i dont know about you but in my experience fighting assassins is no bueno. you get one punch in maybe if you’re lucky and take them by surprise but then youre dead and you cant fight for shit anymore. BUT if you take all his candy, his blood sugar will get low, making him weak and agitated. this is the optimal time to fight him. make sure he knows you’re the one who stole his candy. make sure he can smell the sugar on your breath. note: he may not spare your life if he gets the upper hand.

Gregor
Winner: Gregor, but you win friendship
i’ll be frank, gregor will beat the everloving shit out of you and there is nothing you can do about it should you choose to fight him. he’ll do it laughing and smiling, not even realizing he broke three of your frail ribs with one pulled punch. but he will absolutely take you out for a round after and exchange drunken stories with you. so fight him. even if he refuses, pay him to fight you. he cant say no to money and nothing is more valuable than fire-forged friendships.

Libra
Winner: Libra
why the fuck do you want to fight the priest. fuck fine, you know what? fight him. see what happens. he’s the only one who will pray for your immortal soul while you bleed out. but guess what, jackass? the gods are gonna see you tried to fight a priest and they’re gonna send your ass to the void anyway

Henry
Winner: ???
man fuck i dunno what this guy’s deal is. on one hand he’s a dark mage genius who was raised by wolves and then sent to a horrific boarding school/orphanage making him literally the stuff horror films are made of. on the other he can be a pretty nice guy if you’re his friend and he’s kinda fucked up so he might let you win. his crows will probably peck you to death either way though so its a lose-lose situation.

Basilio
Winner: Basilio
same deal as gregor, except basilio is hard-mode. he might accidentally kill you while you fight and his friendship is an even rarer flower. you gotta be charming. you gotta be smart. you gotta be somewhat strong. but if you do manage to get your ass beat and stay alive in such a way that he wants to grab a pint with you, take that beautiful budding friendship, hold it close to your breast and never let go

Donnel
Winner: You
he’s by far the sorriest character you get at recruitment. if it weren’t for that pot on his head, a feather falling too hard could kill him. but he’s a farmer that works day in and day out just so his village can survive. do you really want to fight the paradigm of the wondrous and wholesome rural life we should all aspire to? you capitalist pig.

i hope i didn’t forget anyone

I’ve never written one of those “five times… one time” fics so I literally have no idea what to call this. But warning, there is mention of a previous abusive relationship below the cut, so please don’t read this if that will harm you in any way!

This fic was based off a post by and a conversation with the lovely @whumpdump, who is amazing, and I couldn’t resist writing it. Because I am who I am, #5 is a teeny lil sickfic. I tried to stop myself. But I have no self control. Anyway I dedicate this fic to her. <3

I also am shit at writing romance so pls forgive me

How do I reveal large amounts of backstory without resorting to massive paragraphs of exposition dump? I have two characters who hold a grudge based on something convoluted that happened a year before the start of the book, and their ongoing feud fuels much of the character conflict in the story, but I can't figure out how to show readers what happened without a massive exposition wall and/or cheesy flashback...

[ Warning: Extremely long post and explicit language/themes ahead! ]

You’d be surprised at how much impact even the smallest hints can carry. Audiences are typically a lot more receptive than most media gives them credit for these days, and can pick up on a lot of things, even when they’re not stated explicitly.

“You’ll like it here,” Sarah said, nodding her head toward one of the tables in the back. Abigail followed her. “It’s not the best school in the county, but at least it’s better than Griggs. I heard that three of their teachers had to be put on house arrest last year because of some—”

She was cut off when she collided with the girl in front of her, who had stopped abruptly in the middle of the aisle to talk to someone at the table next to them. The girl turned around, and her expression soured when she saw who had bumped into her.

“Sarah,” she said curtly.

“Hannah,” Sarah replied, shoving past her without meeting her eyes.

Even without either of the characters explaining it, you can tell that Sarah and Hannah have a history that Abigail (and the reader) are as yet unaware of. There’s an implication that there’s a mutual dislike there, but we’re not totally sure why, nor how deep it goes. This sets the stage for reading into future actions to try to gain further context clues.

It’s Hard Enough - Cooper!Reader X Jughead Jones - Part 3

I’m obsessed with It’s Hard Enough! I was think you should do a part 3 where like in the episode Jughead gets in a fight with Reggie and reader somehow gets involved…And Alice Cooper is not a fan of their relationship?

I love it’s hard enough, could you possibly make a part 3? :3

If you’re new to the series : Part One , Part Two . I kinda took this part in my own way, I hope you like it!

It had been around a week since you shared your first kiss with Jughead Jones and things were going quite well. Betty convinced Jughead to join the school newspaper team, which gave you time to hang out together. Luckily for you, Betty was far too immersed in the Jason Blossom case to notice the stolen glances between you and Jughead. You found yourself spending your time after school in the newsroom, helping Betty sort out papers while simultaneously spending time with your boyfriend. Just thinking of the word, and Jughead, made you feel giddy.

“I don’t think I’ve seen Y/N smile like that in a long time,” Betty teased as you were busy sorting through pictures for the Blue & Gold. You glanced up at your sister, then at Jughead who was staring at you softly. Your felt a blush warm on your cheeks under his gaze and he smiled.

“Don’t you have a murder board to build?” You asked in order to change the subject, get the attention off of yourself. Betty smiled playfully and turned back to Jughead. They started talking quietly about the case, never loud enough for you to hear. You didn’t understand why exactly they tried to hide it from you. You were only a year younger than the two of them. Jughead explained himself one night at the diner. He had said he likes to “keep his work away from his personal life. It makes things less messy.” It was a very cold, business man-like answer that had caught you off guard. The conversation had grown quiet after that, until Jughead spoke up once more.

“It’s a way of keeping you safe,” he had murmured, looking around the diner to see if anyone from school was there. When he realized no one was, he had reached his hand across the table, grabbing yours and gave it a squeeze. You smiled at the memory, the feeling of the skin of his hand against yours.

“I just don’t know Juggie,” Betty said, breaking you from your thoughts. “I think the mystery behind my little sister’s smile is slightly more intriguing to me.” You looked up from the images and saw Betty looking at you again. You could feel Jughead’s eyes on you as you straightened your back to face your sister.

“I’m just happy to be helping you two out. It gets me out of the house, and you’re more than willing to share your friends with me.” You gestured to Jughead who smiled proudly at you. Betty nodded and walked over to you, hugging you tightly.

“I’m glad you’re happy Y/N,” Betty whispered, “with everything going on, Polly, you deserve to be happy.” You wrapped your arms tightly around your sister, returning her hug. From over her shoulder, you noticed Jughead smiling softly at the two of you. You offered a smile to him, hoping that your eyes could convey your thankful message.

“Alright,” Betty said as she pulled away from your embrace. “I gave cheer practice, so you two can either head home or keep working.” Betty walked to her bags and you looked up at Jughead once more. His light eyes were bright and he nodded quickly. You returned his gesture.

“I think I’ll stay and help out Jughead,” you said and Betty smiled as she picked up her bags from cheerleading practice.

“Okay, good luck you two.” With that, your sister walked out the door to the newsroom and left you and Jughead in a brief silence. When the sound of Betty’s footsteps faded down the hall, Jughead darted towards you. His hands grabbed yours, squeezing them gently. You looked down at your joined hands, wondering how on Earth it was humanly possible for someone’s ands to be as cold as his. You looked back up at him, meeting his gaze. You smiled when you noticed how his gaze flickered from your eyes, to your lips and then back again. You leaned up on your tippy toes, pressing a small peck to his lips. You smiled into the soft kiss, and giggled slightly when his chilled hand tickled the sensitive skin of your neck.

“Sorry,” you murmured, “your hands are freezing.” He let out a breathy chuckle, causing you to grin. Your faces remained a mere inches apart as you smiled sickeningly sweet smiles at each other.

Author’s Note: Hey guys! Hope you’re taking care of yourselves. I wanted to apologize again for not posting at all for the past week. I’ve had terrible migraines, you know the ones that make you feel really dizzy and nauseous? Yeah, I’ve had those. I think I might need my vision checked. Anyways, I hope you enjoy!

I’ve only edited this a couple times, I’ll probably edit it again.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts. We have been cleared to land at the Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea. We will be landing in approximately 10 minutes.Thank you.”

Fastening my seatbelt, I waited rather impatiently for the plane to land. I was eager to finally get off of this 14 hour flight that I had to take in order to get to Seoul. My best friend, Leigh-Ann moved to South Korea last year after graduating college to pursue a career as both a makeup artist and a stylist. Having not seen her in almost a whole year, I decided that I would come visit her while I was taking a semester off of school. Before boarding my flight, I talked to Leigh-Ann and she is going to meet me at the airport and take me back to her place, which is where I will be staying during my visit.

“I’ve made everyone sad the past couple posts. I’mma do something funny!” And then I fucking THREW IN FEELS. Honestly I am sorry but I did want to explore Howard and Maria’s relationship a bit.

Maria walked into her husband’s office and was only slightly surprised that he was sprawled out on his fainting couch. Howard had always had a flair for the dramatic. She wasn’t quite sure why he was moaning about how terrible his life was though. It wasn’t like something bad had happened to him in the last three days.

“Dear,” she said.

“Maria, everything is terrible!” Howard moaned, rolling from side to side.

It took everything Maria had not to laugh in his face. “Why is everything terrible, dear?”

Howard jerked into a sitting position, appalled that she apparently hadn’t noticed. “Tony hasn’t called me ‘daddy’ in a month!”

Maria raised her eyebrow and clasped her hands behind her back so he couldn’t see her digging claws into her skin, to keep from giggling about how earnestly upset he was. “Oh.”

“He always called me ‘daddy!’” Howard continued, covering his face and moaning in frustration. “He’s only called me ‘dad’ for the last month! Do you know how many times that was?”

“Honey, I don’t kn–” Maria began.

“Eighty-three times!” Howard burst out, thrashing so hard that he fell off the couch with a yelp.

Maria did not snort, because she knew she would start laughing and never stop if she did, and then Howard would be extra upset.

Howard blinked up at the ceiling, then clambered to his feet, dusting himself off. “Eighty-three times he’s called me ‘dad’ instead of ‘daddy,’ Maria.”

“You kept count,” Maria said after a moment, surprised.

Howard frowned at her. “Well, yes, Maria, it’s a numbers thing, I’m a numbers man.”

“No, you’re right, honestly,” she said. “That’s on me.”

Eighty-three times, Maria!” Howard continued, throwing his hands up. “You don’t seem nearly as upset about this as you should be!”

Maria didn’t say ‘well yeah, he still calls me “mommy,”’ but only because it was quite possible that Howard might burst into tears.

“…Did I do something wrong?” Howard asked softly. “Did I make him stop loving me?”

“Honey, no,” Maria answered immediately. “There is nobody who loves their father more than Tony loves you. Sometimes boys just… stop calling their fathers ‘daddy’ as they get older. That’s not a reflection on you.

Howard frowned. “But… I’m his daddy.”

“Howard,” Maria sighed, reaching out to cup his cheeks and draw him into a kiss. “You’re always going to be his daddy. Just because Tony’s calling you something different doesn’t mean his feelings have changed. He still loves you the same as he did a month ago.”

“Why do things have to change?” Howard asked sadly. “Why can’t he be my sweet little boy forever?”

Maria pressed her face into his neck and hummed. “That’s just life, honey.”

“I know,” he sighed, then yelped. “Ooh! Did you just bite me?!”

Maria blinked, teeth digging into the skin of his throat. “…No.”

“Maria, you know you can’t bite me unless we have time for me to do something about it,” Howard scolded, giving her a fond pat on the butt before gently nudging her away. “I have to make some phone calls before supper.”

Maria groaned loudly, annoyed. “Why did you have to be a CEO? Why couldn’t I marry a regular guy?”

Howard pressed a quick kiss to her lips before moving back toward his desk. “A regular guy couldn’t buy Janet Van Dyne expensive fabric just to make his son a beautiful ballgown for the next Meeting.”

The werewolf couldn’t help a fond smile. “Tony’s going to love the dress, Howard.”

He scoffed. “It’s a gift from Janet, Maria, not from me.”

Maria rolled her eyes. “Of course, Howard.”

“I think,” Maria said, then paused. “…I think you should call your father ‘daddy’ more often, bambino.”

Tony blinked up at her, gangly now, but still with bright, innocent eyes. “The boys at school make fun of me when I call him that.”

“Why in the hell,” Maria whispered to herself, another thing to wonder about why humans were the way they were. “Well, perhaps still refer to him as ‘dad’ while at school, but call him ‘daddy’ when you’re home? He misses it.”

“Okay,” Tony replied with that familiar guilelessness that she loved. “I can try.”

She wrapped him up in a hug that brought his feet off the ground, spinning him in a circle that had him giggling. “That’s my boy! Your father is a little odd, but we love him anyway, right?”

Tony laughed as she dug her fingers into his sides, kicking wildly with laughter. “Mom!”

“He’s a human and he’s strange even by their standards but he’s the most loving father and husband in the world!” Maria continued, swinging him around again.

“Yeah!” Tony agreed happily, then kicked again. “Mommy, put me down!”

Maria sighed, just a touch wistfully, as she set him on his feet. He still called her ‘mommy’ but it was definitely falling in frequency. She carefully brushed his hair out of his eyes, humming quietly and murmuring about a haircut, and ended up with her hand on top of his head, surprising herself with the thought ‘if we just had a little more time.’ Usually it was Howard being the sentimental one.

“My precious pup,” she murmured, cupping his cheek. “Do you know how much we love you?”

Tony tilted his head as he looked up at her. “Of course, Mom. You guys hug and kiss me and tell me you love me all the time. Did you know there are boys at school who don’t get hugs and kisses from their parents?”

Maria smiled sadly. “Oh, honey.”

“So I know how much you guys loves me,” the boy continued. “Do you guys know how much I love you?”

Maria squatted in front of him, cupping his cheeks again. “Honey, it’s never going to be as much as your daddy and I love you.”

Tony stuck his chin out stubbornly. “Well, I’m going to try!”

“Tesorino, that would be delightful,” Maria assured him, pressing a kiss to his cheek.

“Mom!” Tony complained. “You always get lipstick on me when you do that!”

“Boys are making fun of him for calling me ‘daddy?!’” Howard burst out angrily. “I knew sending him to boarding school was a mistake!”

“Honey,” Maria said, trying to keep the laughter out of her voice.

“They’re ruining my precious boy!”

Maria covered her mouth to hide her smile. “I think boys would have made fun of him at a public school, too, dear.”

“Maria, I’ve been telling you this!” Howard threw his hands up. “We could home school him until he’s ready for college! And then we get a little apartment off campus to stay in while he’s there so we’d always be nearby–”

“Howard, I thought you wanted to stop people from bullying him. A boy that never leaves his parents’ home, Howard? Really?”

Howard sagged, sitting down on the edge of their bed and hanging his head. “My boy,” he said sadly. “I’m supposed to protect him.”

“You’re also supposed to let him grow up to become his own man,” Maria told him gently. “And with you as his father, he’s going to grow up to be a good man, too, Howard.”

Howard choked quietly and clutched his chest. “Maria,” he said, tears filling his eyes. “Why would you say something like that when you know I’m so weak?”

“You’re not weak,” she answered immediately. “I wouldn’t choose a weak mate. If anything, you’re too strong, and too damn responsible.” She ran her fingers through his hair as his shoulders began to shake. “Why does it surprise you so that I love my mate so dearly?”

“Sometimes,” Howard began, leaning his head on her shoulder. “Sometimes I worry. That I’m tricking you somehow. And I’m just screwing everything up.”

“You’re not,” Maria assured him. “You’re not tricking me and you’re not screwing everything up. You love Tony. And sometimes you forget about Tony long enough to remember you love me, too.”

“Maria,” Howard gasped, lifting his head to stare up at her. “I always love you. If I’ve done something–”

She snorted, pressing a finger to his lips. “Howard, nothing could give me greater pleasure than my mate loving our pup. I was just teasing.”

“I wish I could give you another one,” he admitted softly, eyes going sad. “Maria, if I’d had any idea what that radiation would do to me–”

Maria held her hand up to stop him. “I’m happy that we even got one pup, Howard. Tony is enough. You are enough. You were upfront with me about your possible fertility issues before you even proposed.” She smirked, leering at him. “And I can’t say the endeavor for a pup was unpleasant either.”

Howard choked on a slightly hysterical laugh. “Maria.

“We’re getting older, dear,” she added after he’d calmed down. “You, especially. Tony… Tony is always going to be enough for me.” She pressed a kiss to his forehead. “And you will, too. Besides, we have Ana and Jarvis, and Peggy and her family. I come from a big pack where there were aunts and uncles and cousins. This… this is just like home.”

Howard frowned, reaching up to cup her cheeks and using his thumb to wipe away a tear she hadn’t noticed had fallen. “I’m sorry I couldn’t find more of your family, honey.”

“You found my Uncle Giuseppe and his family,” Maria answered quietly. “That was… honestly more than I ever hoped for.”

Howard nodded, dissatisfied. He was still looking, technically, had detectives searching Europe for Carbonells, but at this point he was pretty sure that they would only find graves, if they’d even been given that decency. He wished he’d taken better care, better safety precautions when he was younger, so he could have given Maria the big family she wanted and the siblings Tony would have adored.

But if Maria could be happy, after all that had happened to her, he’d stop wondering ‘what if’ and be happy, too.

Gong Minzy Talks About Missing Out On Childhood Moments As A Trainee On “Sister’s Slam Dunk 2”

On the May 5 broadcast of “Sister’s Slam Dunk 2,” Gong Minzy opened up about the sacrifices she made to chase her dream.

The cast members transformed into high school students for this episode and boarded a train to go on a special trip while sharing stories from their school days.

As Gong Minzy had been a trainee since age 13, she explained that she never had friends at school because she could never linger, always leaving instead for the practice room. She shared, “I often thought to myself, ‘I want to play with friends too. I want to run around outside and play on the playground together, I want to eat with friends.‘” Gong Minzy also opened up about how she had never gone on a school trip before, and how she had no memories from her school days because she had only ever practiced.

In response, fellow member Kang Yewon said, “You have friends,” and gestured at the members on the train. The members promised to gift Gong Minzy with memories on this trip and then decided to all act like they were the same age as Jeon Somi.

It’s heartwarming to see the other members band together to comfort Gong Minzy.

She led me out of the shed and back to the house, her hand gently let go of mine as we crept closer to the house. She opened the sliding glass door and I followed her in.

The house was decorated to the fullest. Full of vibrant paintings as well as a wall of pictures. One included a woman that looked the spitting image of Y/N, just with shorter hair. I turned to the left of me and saw Cliff cooking. He peered up to the both of us with a smile.

He started to sign to Y/N who once again started to translate for him. “He asked if you can get Tim from his room, I’m going to set the table”, she gave a smile.

I nodded to both of them, “Sure”.

I didn’t notice this till I saw this gifset, but when Archie stands up for Cheryl against those people, he says “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, being in Cheryl’s class, is don’t underestimate her”. So does that mean that Cheryl is a sophomore too? In that case she would be a year behind Jason in school? Which is plausible I guess, maybe she was held back a year because of an illness or some other reason but should we be assuming this when we’re not being explicitly told? Or does this mean Cheryl and Jason weren’t really twins? In that case, it would be on the school records and everyone would know by the birth date. Or did Archie just mean they shared some classes like we’ve seen them do, and he made that observation about Cheryl while they were in those classes togther? Something didn’t seem right about that bit of dialogue. Why mention “Being in Cheryl’s class” at all? It sounds to me more like he’s saying they’re in the same year. Also, they talked about Cheryl’s 4.0 GPA which means she’s smart. Then why did Penelope say no boarding school in Europe would have her? I assumed it was because of her poor grades or something. Why won’t they have her? The Blossoms are super-rich, they can afford to get her into any school if they wanted. Does someone have a reasonable explanation for this? Am I overthinking, is this a plothole or a deliberate plot point?

I’ve seen this go round as a tag, but it’s also kinda relevant to upcoming plans: My oldest saved Sim updated. Child Edward Greystone was saved on February 27th 2014. He’d been in game for a while then, because originally I made him in CAS as a toddler (girl) for a world-project of my sister’s. But when I decided to move the Greystone to my own wolrd I found it boring that they only had daughters.

Edward spent the past few years (in game and also in real time…) in boarding school. We’ll meet him again when Clarissa ages up and goes to university (one and a half more ingame years).

Grantchester star James Norton criticises trend for faith being portrayed as 'exorcisms and cults'
James Norton, star of TV’s Grantchester, has said the medium doesn’t do enough to portray faith in a positive light and focuses too much on exorcisms and cults.

James Norton, star of TV’s Grantchester, has said the medium doesn’t do enough to portray faith in a positive light and focuses too much on exorcisms and cults.

He made the criticism while saying he was proud to play Reverend Canon Sidney Chambers in the ITV series, whom he called “a hero with faith”.

In an interview with Weekend magazine, Norton said: “The idea of faith isn’t really explored any more on television; now the only real representations of it are either comic or sinister with exorcisms and weird culty things.

“But so many people have faith and I enjoy showing that.”

Yorkshire-born Norton, 31, was educated at a Catholic boarding school before studying theology at Cambridge, and said he was attracted to the character’s relationship with God.

He said: “Sidney has a pure and simple faith. He doesn’t make it funny or dark in any twisted way.

“He’s a hero and has a faith and there are lots of good people out there who are the same, so I’m proud to play him.”

The third series of Grantchester, set in 1955, will explore Sidney’s conflict between his heart and his vocation as his relationship develops with new mother Amanda who remains married to another man.

But viewers hoping for a repeat of last year’s shirt-off shenanigans will be left disappointed.

Production on the series, which is filmed in the eponymous Cambridgeshire village, started too late in the year for any river swimming scenes of the type which raised pulses and eyebrows last year.

This is not the first time television’s characterisation of religion has been publicly criticised.

Only last November a senior BBC broadcaster warned that the corporation was “coming up short” in religious broadcasting.

Roger Bolton, a producer and Radio 4 presenter, warned the BBC was not doing enough to promote knowledge and understanding of religion and specifically criticised its lack of a senior editor devoted solely to religious and ethical programming.

He wrote in the Radio Times: “ Perhaps it’s not Christian bias we should worry about, but something far more worrying when it comes to understanding and interpreting our modern world: a bias against taking religion seriously.“

Hi, I just wondered if you had any advice. I just hit 24 and still have a few of years to go in my school and I already feel too old. Am I? Also, the school Im at sucks (and rhymes with Fart Lintstitute). Am I utterly screwed over in terms of getting a job somewhere like CN? Should I drop out while I still can? Theres no other schools in my state and I think Im worse than these kids, so Im feeling discouraged. And how do I get into storyboarding? I just recently realized its a path I could take.

There are a lot of different things to cover here so I’ll separate them out:

Are you too old?

You’re not too old. This isn’t like Logan’s Run where once you turn thirty you float around in a room where you explode on the ceiling. If it is, I’m in for a very rude awakening in a few months.

My school is shitty, does that mean I’m shitty and will never get a job?

If you think you will get better at your art by not being in school, then by all means, drop out. There’s no reason to put yourself into debt for something that isn’t helping you. I know lots of people that dropped out of school or went to schools that “sucked” that have great careers in this industry.

I’ve got plenty of complaints about my school from when I attended, but I know that overall it helped me even though it’s a lesser known school. A lesser known school, by the way, that produced Toby Jones, Madeline Queripel, Julia Vickerman, and many others that have good careers in animation in other studios.

There’s an unhelpful meme going around that says you can’t get a job in animation unless you go to CalArts. It’s simply not true. I will give you that if you ask someone where they’re from, the school that the most people have in common is CalArts, but the vast majority of people didn’t go there. What’s more likely, that an industry full of thousands and thousands of people only hires from one school even though they get someone from another school or no school submitting to them with high quality work? Or that someone who makes sub-par work has been submitting to studios for years, but they can’t find a job, they’re starting to get bitter, and they’re looking for someone to blame other than themselves so they choose CalArts? This is understandable, and it can feel immensely frustrating when people seem like they don’t take your work seriously. You have this drive and desire to get in, but people keep telling you no without telling you why, or even worse, not responding at all!

Then, on the internet, you have people like me who say things like “Just keep working at it” and “keep submitting! Draw all the time!” This can be somewhat misleading because we want to remain positive and usually leave out the part where we think “Also this process can take anywhere from 1-10 years or more and, if you get offered a job at all, it will most likely be at a small studio working on something you don’t particularly like or care about, but you’ll at least make money and after a couple years of doing that you might move on to something you like a little more!”

For most people, it takes a long time to get into these big studios. It’s intimidating, scary, frustrating, and unfair. It’s unfair because people who know people in the industry have an advantage over you, but that’s also the case in EVERY industry in the world. However, while it’s an advantage, it’s far from a guarantee. If you know people, they let you know when and where there’s a job opening and can vouch for you, but that’s it. People don’t just hire their friends, no weirdo introverted artist showrunner has as many friends as there are jobs to fill. That vouch still can’t actually get you the job. It’s art. If you can’t draw what you’re being asked to draw, it becomes quickly obvious and it’s really the one thing you have to do, so you either won’t be hired or will be out of a job as soon as they’re able to let you go. There’s simply no time for nepotism, we have a schedule and we need to get shit done.

Hell, after you work at a small studio, you might find you don’t even want to work at a big studio and all of this will be moot!

Should I drop out of school? I’m worse than everyone else.

Here’s some questions you should think about: Why do you think you’re worse than your peers? What qualities does their work have that, in your mind, makes it better? Why is that important to you? How could you get those qualities into your work? What separates you from them? What qualities do you have that they don’t have? Will your artistic education be better if you aren’t in school and are able to do things on your own, or will it be better with instruction and learning from other students around you? Is it possible you’re just burned out because this is an intense field of study? Are you actually answering these questions truthfully?

If your work is at least like a 6.5 out of 10 in quality, then all you need is two of these three things:

1) You turn your stuff in on time

2) You’re easy to work with

3) You make incredible work

Neil Gaiman wrote those as a venn diagram and he’s absolutely right. I would say living in the area where you want to be employed also helps, but if you’re good enough, they’ll find a way. Someone who makes great work will always be more obvious to employers and, right out of school, those people tend to get hired first because it’s the easiest quality to look for. However, if that person doesn’t have either of those other two qualities, that person will quickly lose credibility. I would rather hire a workhorse who makes ok art, but I like working with them and they do it on time, than someone who makes the most incredible artwork ever but they never turn their stuff in and they’re an asshole.

Now all that up there is probably reading as a bit of a downer. It’s okay though, everything has its downers and its uppers. That’s why the whole world is so crazy, it’s meds are all mixed up.

You CAN do it. You can. Seriously. People work in TV. Los Angeles isn’t some mythical, faraway land that’s somehow better than where you live. We’re all just a bunch of flawed people, really mediocre people, that have somehow tricked other people into giving us money to make whatever art we want. You can join the rest of us con artists and we’ll accept you as one of our own and we can all trick everyone together.

What is the path for storyboarding?

There are a million and one ways to get into it. It’s more of a branching spider web than a path. I know a lot of people who got into it through comics. If a show runner can quickly read a comic you’ve made, then they know a lot about you: your writing style, your drawing style, your sense of humor, and the fact that you can finish what you start.

Toby got hired because JG said on twitter that he was looking for new board artists. Toby was making comics in his free time, responded to him via Facebook, and sent him some of his comics. That’s how Toby got the job and he immediately moved from Minneapolis to LA to take it.

My path:

Before I started school I wanted to do 3D animation, so I went to art school. While there, I found out that I liked 2D animation even more, so I focused on that. It was really hard because while I found I liked the look and idea of 2D more, I didn’t like drawing variations on practically the same thing over and over again for days just to make 4 seconds of animation. There were definitely other animators and artists who were better than me.

I considered dropping out at the end of my junior year. I laid down in the hallway of my apartment and cried while staring at the ceiling and ants crawled all over body (we had an ant problem). I didn’t know if I wanted to keep going through college or drop out. My parents said I sounded burned out. They recommended doing something completely, totally different, that has nothing to do with art or my career over the summer. My mom said she got a job in Yellowstone for a summer when she was in college, so I decided to give that a shot.

So I did! I became a housekeeper in Grant Village in Yellowstone. It was transformative. I met new friends who did things that weren’t related to art, I found new stories from new people, new ways to think. I even met some Chinese people who introduced me to the idea that it’s super easy to get an english teaching job in China if you’re a native speaker, a job I’d never even heard of until they mentioned it.

When it came time to answer whether I wanted to go back to school, my brain had had enough time to recuperate over the summer from doing completely different work. I felt healed and had a lot more insight as to what my life needed. I answered those questions up there and decided that yes, I did still want to finish school.

So I finished, but still felt burned out and decided to move to China to be an English teacher. I did that for 3 years, even though all my friends told me not to and said I was crazy. I agreed somewhat, but it felt like something I needed to do. I had no idea how I was ever going to get back into working in art.

While I was there I learned more about music production, made two albums, and made an animated music video. When I decided to move back to LA, I sent out some feelers to people and Toby, who had been my freshman year roommate in college, said they were looking for people on Regular Show. This was for a job position called “storyboarder/writer” and I’d never heard of that job before. They sent me the test, I took it, he showed JG some of my work (including the music video I had made while in China). JG decided to take the chance on hiring some random English teacher from China that he’d never met or even interviewed over the phone.

That is my path to storyboarding. You can try taking that same path, but as you can see, it all requires a bit of serendipity and preparation for when that serendipity happens.

Wow that was a lot of stuff. Why do you write so much? Jeez, summarize it.

Because I work in TV and I have to edit myself down all the time so THIS IS MY FREE SPACE OKAY??

You don’t have to go to the most amazing school in the world. You don’t have to be the most incredible artist in the world. You don’t have to know people. You DO have to have drive and decent art. You CAN do it, you just have be realistic about who you are and what you need in order to get there.

Nine Days of Christmas [NurseyDex] - Day One: Decorating the Haus

day one | day two | day three | day four | day five | day six | day seven | day eight | day nine |

Most of the Samwell Men’s Hockey Team (and the rest of the Samwell campus, to be honest) aren’t going to deny the fact that the Haus is a high-energy place for most occasions. Nothing, though, and they do mean nothing, compares to the Haus around Christmas time. So, the minute the calendar hits December 1st, Ransom and Holster call a team meeting, agenda Holiday Time Motherfuckers. The first item on the list?

Decorating.

And that is how Derek Nurse finds himself shuffling precariously on one of the shitty ladders they had hiding in the basement, hands covered in tinsel, trying to tack up some holiday decorations in the Haus hallway.

“Wait, woah, what the fuck, who the hell let you up there?” Derek startles as a voice rings out from below him, jerking back a little and beginning to lose his balance. He starts to waver and dimly hears the thump of something hitting the floor before he feels a warm hand on his lower back and another on his hip. They steady his movement and lean him forward until he has his wits about him. Derek looks down to see Dex grimacing up at him.

“See?” he says, poking at Derek’s stomach. “Can’t be trusted.” Dex kind of smiles up at Derek, which takes the slight sting out of his words, but a chirp is a chirp and Derek must defend his honor.

“Oh, I’m sorry, what exactly made me lose my balance in the first place?” he drawls. “I seem to recall a certain someone whose name rhymes with Fill Joinhexter rudely disrupting my concentration.” He sniffs and turns back to the tinsel. He hears Dex huff out a laugh below him and has to hide a grin of his own.

“Wow, Nurse, those poetry classes are really paying off. ‘Fill Joinhexter,’ I can hear the influences.” He gestures dramatically. “Emerson, Keats, Byron.” Derek raises an eyebrow.

“How—”

“I went to high school, Nursey, don’t look so surprised.” He begins to walk off to the kitchen, clearly intent on hunting out something to eat.

“Oh yeah? Name five of their albums.” Derek calls after him, laughing.

“Fuck off, Nurse!” He’s only just gone back to his work when he hears the floor boards near the kitchen entryway creak again,

“Hey, Nursey?” Dex asks. Derek twists around, mind still half on his placement of the paper snowflake Chowder had made. Dex tilts his head and, his expression gentle, begins to move towards Derek, speaking softly all the while.

“And on that cheek, and o’er that brow, so soft, so calm, yet eloquent, the smiles that win, the tints that glow, but tell of days in goodness spent, a mind at peace with all below, a heart whose love is innocent.” He blinks up at Derek a second longer, his freckles lit up by the sun pouring in through the kitchen, and seems to consider the look on Derek’s undoubtedly shocked face. Dex’s eyes crinkle and he breaks into a blinding grin before he starts to laugh.

Derek throws a piece of tinsel at him as Dex beats a quick retreat, still laughing. The fucker.

You always have the best fic recs! Do you know of any exhaustive master posts for magical, BAMF, or supernatural creature!stiles? Or any combo if the three?

50+ Sterek recs (Magic!Stiles, supernatural!Stiles)

Magic!Stiles

  • What I Did On My Summer Vacation by grimm (E, 119k) There’s something weird about Beacon Hills that Stiles can’t quite put his finger on. The way everyone in town knows his name the day he arrives. The way they insist the melancholic howling that echoes through the forest every night is just a dog. The way his dad denies getting a dog, even though Stiles comes home to find one sprawled across his bed, some big black thing whose eyes gleam red in the right light. The way that massive oak tree out in the woods vibrates under his touch, pulsing with sickly life. There’s something weird going on in this town, and Stiles is determined to get to the bottom of it.
  • que tu m’aimais encore by magneticwave (T, 20k) Wolves mate for life, don’t they?
  • Stand Fast in Your Enchantments by DevilDoll  (E, 77k) ”Stiles knew damn well what a pissed-off wolf sounded like, and every hair on the back of his neck was telling him that somewhere in this room was a very pissed-off werewolf.” An AU in which Derek is feral, Stiles is magical, and they eat a lot of fast food.
  • Play it Again by metisket (T, 63k) In which Stiles goes along with one of Derek’s plans and ends up in an alternate universe as a result. He should’ve known better. He did know better, actually, and that means he has no one to blame but himself. “Laura wants to lure the kid in with food and kindness and make a pet of him, like a feral cat. Derek wants to have him arrested for stalking. They’re at an impasse. (And the rest of the family is staying emphatically out of it in a way that suggests bets have been placed.)”
  • The Walls Are Breathing In by secondstar (E, 42k) Nothing could go wrong. It was just supposed to be a safe trip to the Nemeton. But this is Beacon Hills and things are rarely that simple. Welcome to the life of Stiles Stilinski. Or, that time that Stiles accidentally became a sorcerer against his will.
  • In The New Year by pyes (T, 44k) In Beacon Hills they don’t say “Happy Holidays.” Instead they say “Yo, Derek,” which translates to “I’m pretty sure I soul-bound my sorry ass to the floor of your loft, four years ago, while reading spells off the internet.” I think that’s beautiful.

Dan never took into consideration that there may be a day when he woke up and Phil wouldn’t be there, staring at him with a look of utmost adoration as if Dan was a lovely piece of art. He never took into consideration that feelings were fleeting and were often replaced with new ones. He never took into consideration that there may be a day in which Phil wouldn’t want him anymore.

“Do you not trust me?” Phil screamed and his hands were clenched into fists, face as red as the tomato Dan consumed in his spaghetti last night. It was somewhat scary seeing him so angry because he was always a generally kind and calm person, and Dan’s eyes pricked with saltine tears.
