How do I make other kids at school stop laughing and making fun of kids with mental illnesses?
As parents ourselves, this breaks our hearts. Stigma and bullying against those with mental illness is unacceptable at any age. Your compassion and concern for your peers is inspiring and encouraging and so very important. Reach out to your teacher, school counselor or another trusted adult to make sure they’re aware of what’s been happening and ask them for guidance. We think one thing you can do is show support for your friends who are being made fun of – let them know you care about them, and invite them to sit with you at lunch or hang out with you between classes. You could also share with your peers that brain illnesses are just like physical illnesses – so just like you wouldn’t laugh at someone with a broken arm or cancer, you shouldn’t laugh at someone living with a mental illness.
