Creator Spotlight: Grant Legan
Tell us a little about yourself. What are you passionate about, what do you do for a living? Do you do photography full-time?
I am originally from a suburb of Chicago, I started traveling in 2008 and haven’t really stopped since. The first out of country trip was to Australia, I met friends from all over the world, and realized how incredibly massive it is. I became obsessed with seeing new things. As I began traveling I consistently heard “have you been to _____, its incredible.. and my list never really stops growing. I am a full time photographer, I shoot a crossover of Fashion and Travel. A travel story with a brand in mind is how I like to see it. Telling the story of a particular brand through a new location.
What drives your passion for photography? What inspires you?
My passion currently lies in traveling, the architecture, the fashion sense, the culture the language. Its beautiful. There is something new, interesting, and beautiful at every new place I find myself. I love that most. Stepping out of the airport at a new location and having every corner be something I have never seen before, I like to see things I am unfamiliar with. I am inspired by light mostly, and how a place makes me feel. That and music… I will forever be moved by music, it inspires a mood that I then try to find in my images.
What kind of gear are you shooting with besides your phone?
I always find this question quite funny, I am so not a techy type of photographer, I never have been… never had the biggest or the best.. I’ve always had the one that works. I actually have been shooting on the same camera for about 6 years until last week in Spain when it became totally waterlogged. It has been such a faithful companion, I went out and got the exact same one to replace it. With any art form (painting, writing, music, cooking…ect) It is never the brush, the pen, the guitar or the stove that make their creations impactful, but they way they experience things in their life or something internal. I use my phone pretty often for instagram as a quick way to capture a moment… I am not really a planner in any area of my life, so when things happen in an instant I have my phone near by to get the snap.
When you are out shooting—how much of it is instinctual versus planned? Tell us a bit about your editing process.
Haha, yup, not a planner at all. Most of it is when I see something interesting, or a moment that I admire, or when the lighting is just right. For editing, I usually look at my images as a contact sheet. Choose the most interesting as a thumbnail. If I like how it is composed from far, i get a closer look to make sure the subject is just right up close. and edit from there.
Who are two other Instagrammers that inspire you? Why?
A favorite is @ChrisCreature for a long time, he is just really in it when he shoots and you can see his mind working when he sees something. It’s not contrived from something else… he’s just in it, he sees something or feels something and creates it. His images speak to the cinematic perspective. His images always feel to have a story, I always look forward to his images. @ravivora as well. His travel images are incredible. There is something beautifully ethereal about the mood in his images.
What is your favorite city in the world? Favorite country? If you could travel to any place in the world, where would it be?
Geesh thats a hard one. I have so many, each place I have ever been holds something incredible. There is something very romantic about coastal cities like Positano and Santorini.. Felt like I was in a film as I wandered the streets…. I also love Barcelona for its chill vibe, the naps and the beautiful winding streets. Australia holds a special place in my heart since It was the first place I went outside of the US on my own. The top places on my list currently are Morocco, Hong Kong, Egypt, Antarctica and Iceland.
